Reviews of Victor Hugo Deli - City Centre
t. p.
Very nice atmosphere, almost like a Parisian cafe. It can get busy at times and staff have misheard orders twice. It is a good place to go for a quick bite of food. The sandwhiches were good for the price but tasted average. Pictures below is the tuna Mayo and their turkey sandwhiches. They also do freshly squeezed orange juice which is great and in winter they offer mulled wine.

We had taken the kids for a visit to the Edinburgh Christmas Market on the last day of School in 2021. After a couple of hours we went searching for a local and good coffee house. We came across Victor Hugo, which we thought we knew from the Edinburgh Meadows cafe. This was our first visit and it worked perfectly with the kids, great selection of snacks and they made amazing Babycinos for the kids. Great location and friendly staff too, with good value for money, Thank You!
..
We had a very nice time with some tea and sandwiches. The counter is stocked full of delicious-looking sandwiches, pastries, and more and it was a tough choice. They don't skimp on fillings and prices are OK for what you're getting. Queue was quick and no problem finding a table to sit down.
A. M.
Everything perfect, big portions, great location.
Friendly and attentive staff, the coffee is also good and the food delicious.
Perfect for brunch or breakfast on your own or with company, the place is cosy and only two steps away from Princess street. If you look at the display your mouth will be watering.
Cakes, little pastry, sandwiches and panini… all generously stuffed! So even if you need a quick meal this is a perfect place for that!
Bigger seating area on George street and plenty seats outdoor.
You should defo try it!
H. S.
Amazing sandwiches. Reminds me of Parisian cafes.
J. M.
Went in for a bit of grub one morning. Food was top notch and so was the coffee. Sat outside with a great view of Edinburgh castle. Definitely a spot you want to stop in to for food and drink.
C.
Great food amazing drink selection great service
K. G.
Delicious food and coffee. I had the Croque Monsieur, which was lovely on really soft bread and came with russian salad (I have no idea what's in that but it was so good), followed by lemon tart and a latte. Great little place!
T. G.
Fab place in city center , by far the best coffee , breakfast and the famous pastrami sandwiches
k. b.
Good independent cafe. Seating areas inside and out. Great coffee. Child friendly. Loos available. Highlight was the toasted pastrami sandwich. Going back for the cakes and pastries.
N. G. (.
Rather busy so ended up outside, the service was very good and the food was some of the best of its type that I've had in a along time.

Whether you're looking to have a coffee, light bite to eat or something to fill your stomach, Victor Hugo Deli have you covered - brilliant selection of food and drink. I would highly recommend the Brie and Cranberry 🤩
A. T.
Friendly staff, reasonable prices, really enjoyed my breakfast here.
R. T.
Great place, so nice we went back again tge day after! Staff lovely and helpful.. coffee perfect and hot!!
i. m.
Lovely food. Great location. Especially if you sit outside...the Castle is in full view of you.
A. S.
Great food, staff were a bit overwhelmed with serving and preparing orders, which did add a delay to service times, otherwise great all round.
L. R.
Nice spot in the city centre to grab some breakfast or lunch, fresh sandwiches and pastries which are well portioned and reasonably priced.
R. M.
A great quality cafe in an ideal location. They sell out of certain menu items- quickly- but still worth a try. Great people watching place - watching the world go by.
T. B.
This place offered me friendly service and by far the best croissant I've had, yet! Definitely come here, try the dirty chai or just a latte and enjoy the croissant warm with some butter and jam. 10/10 would recommend.
L. C.
Five stars simply for the pastrami sandwich. So good and so tasty.
H. T.
Excellent options and very accommodating of my odd drink request for tea with latte milk and syrup!
J. M.
Nice enough coffee and cakes but place seemed grubby and the kids running it seemed a bit untrained and supported... Probably better to go for takeaway but service ain't fast...
T. D.
Our first day in Edinburgh in search of breakfast and we had the cheese and ham hot croissants, delicious, with accompanying home made coleslaw and potato salad. Coffee was great and my 2 x daughters loved the Babachino! All staff so friendly! You should definitely visit here!
M. E.
The food and coffee were great. Even though the restaurant was busy and they were short staffed, the service was very good.
There’s plenty of tables outside which is a plus.
Just across the street from the meadows, this is a great place to have breakfast before going into town.
J. K.
Visiting Edinburgh with my family, stumbled across this place for lunch and came back several times for coffee and cake too. Very welcoming of buggies and little people. Great food and excellent service! Thank you!
E. M.
We just popped in for coffee and cake but the food looked amazing. Would thoroughly recommend it for both lunch and tea/coffee. Staff were very pleasant.
E. L.
Brunch was average but the deli sandwiches look amazing! I'll have one of those next time.
N. T.
Excellent food and service. Nice selection and teas.
P. N.
This is a great little place popular just managed to get a table inside there is seating on the pavement. Lovely display of very tempting fresh wrapped sandwiches plus quiche little Italian pastries .Lovely cappochino service okay .Great central location if shopping in central Edinburgh
C. C.
Great range of sandwiches. Fast service. Lovely views of Edinburgh castle from the outside seating area
J. E.
Nice food. Pupular so can take a while for takeaway
K. T.
Very good. Superb choice of savory dishes, sandwiches and cakes. Excellent latte served hot. Good Covid measures in place. Friendly and attentive staff. Good value. Will be added to my top 10
E. B.
Lovely eggnedict Benidict roll, very reasonable for around £5 for a well presented brunch option, as well as good roast coffee. Again I would recommend this.
S. A.
A great spot to rest your feet and refuel with a view. Although they don't have any salad food or meals (mainly ciabatta's ect) the coffee was decent, felt a bit special.
R. A.
Had the pastrami sandwich and a machiato. Their coffee was perfect and the pastrami was sooooo good! Yum. Recommended.
J. C.
The sandwiches here are absolutely killer. The cake portions are massive, and everything is very reasonably priced. Would absolutely eat here again when back in Edinburgh.
P. B.
Delicious baguettes and savouries followed by yummy cakes and pastries. Large selection of teas, coffees and cold drinks.
Very clean and covid secure, staff extremely helpful and friendly
J. B.
Fabulous service, the staff are really great with kids. The food is lovely.. the lasagne tasted homemade and the toasties are fab. I've enjoyed everything I had here with the exception of my pot of breakfast tea which was on the weak side despite brewing for a while. Excellent value for money and I'd come here just for the service.
B. N.
This place is excellent food very tasty , was there today had a coffee superb sadly the scone was very dry and hard told the girl and was replaced with one which was slightly better as a baker of 50 years experience I would say they are frozen and brought out daily no a good idea .
R. M.
Great good, but could do with more seating.
A. D.
The service is a little slow because they're busy but it's worth the wait. The food is excellent! Lovely place 😀
S. W.
Great venue with outside seating between Princes and George Street. Excellent coffees and breakfast. Recommend the bacon roll!!!
D. B.
Good service, great food and very reasonably priced for city centre.
I. B.
Coffee great service was fine but when sitting there the staff were makeing more noise than the customers .But I did enjoy my coffee and Brownie .And the place its self was lovely done up and calm looking will go back.
A.
Tasty food but the service is a bit chaotic.
D. F. (.
The sandwiches are not as filled as the pictures you'll see of them. All the filling is at the front with none at the back. I was quite looking forward to a chunky sandwich, but was rather disappointed.
Cakes are very good. Super tasty rocky road. Service was mediocre (but it was opening week, so take that with a pinch of salt).
K. R.
Lovely deli. We had brunch outside overlooking the castle. Great food and view
D. C.
Not quite on it. Sandwich could have been much better.
M. H.
I'm addicted to the pastrami 'n rye. Sorry I don't have any pics as I'm too eager to scoff my sandwich. Excellent eatery with amazing hot and cold food. Puts all other cafes to shame based in price, quality and taste.
D. P.
Very poor organisation: customers gathering on both side of the tills waiting several minutes for their orders to be prepared (even for a simple cake slice). I think the staff should serve customers directly at the tills for simple (quick) take-away orders, rather than giving ticket numbers and make people wait several minutes after paying.
If eating in, don’t expect to be served quickly... for my first visit (lunchtime) it took approx 30min to be served.
V. K.
Bitter cappuccino, gluten free cakes are just way too sweet. Expensive with no reason..... However, tea was nice, they have different options of milk and gluten free options, friendly staff
F. M.
Lovely cakes and coffee. Sadly we're advised after 20 minutes they were closing and told to leave at 4.30 pm.
Would NEVER RETURN.
K. A.
Great sandwiches and friendly staff. Had the pastrami on Rye which was about £4.80 which was completely stuffed! The chocolate bar cake was delicious as well.
A. B.
Customer service excellent. Treated very well. My grandaughter loved her hot chocolate. See you soon
J. W.
Absolutely amazing deli, can’t wait until it’s open again, but it being available for delivery has kept me going
There food is incredible and has to be experienced to be believed
H. R.
Very nice place we sat outside in the sun but as we booked for 2pm they didn't have much choice.
Recommend that if you want to go go earlier
C. D.
Food was fantastic and the coffee was excellent. Would highly recommend.
S. F.
Tuna and cucumber baguette was fantastic, thoroughly recommend.
A.
Very glad I don't live to close, I think it would be un healthy. Good people watch location, I'd like some less heavy options in the menu.. or something like that.
J. L.
Brilliant outdoor facilities. Covid friendly and well organised. Good prices and choices. Food portions are generous and good value for money. A great break whilst shopping.
S.
Lovely looking sandwiches and treats. Tea was lovely but vegan croissant was really more of a dinner roll. Would be a perfectly lovely place to go with more vegan sandwich options.
S. S.
Wonderful sandwiches, so filling & tasty
S. L.
A very eclectic menu. The staff was nice and polite. The food was a bit oily, but satisfactory. The deserts looked great and we'll try them next time
S. M.
With the independent cafes in and around central Edinburgh as rare as week without rain in the capital, Victor Hugo is a real treat. In addition to a range of coffees and teas (non dairy options are also offered) there are plenty of wonderful pastries to choose from as well as an extensive breakfast, brunch and lunch menu. There's a continental breakfast offering, which is extremely good value as well as breakfast rolls and the more traditional larger plates of eggs florentine. As this is a French cafe there are no Scottish breakfasts or similar equivalent, and this is no bad thing. I recommend the egg Florentine breakfast roll and a flat white. Their Portuguese natas are addictively good. They also serve wine at reasonable prices, including red, white and rosé by the glass and bottle. There is seating by the window and outside as well. This place offers table service and takeaway.
M. H.
A pretty solid deli, the pastrami sandwich was actually a little smaller than I was expecting, but still very tasty. Good service and a nice, bustling atmosphere.
M. B.
Great staff :) love going to Victor Hugo and first time since lockdown. 4 stars because I was a little uncertain about rules and table service. But brilliant food and service as always
J. H.
Been to the stalwart deli along the Meadows and this did not disappoint. Great sandwiches, pastries and impeccable service all for a very reasonable price. Definitely recommend.
H. M.
Amazing super stuffed sandwiches. And the veggie lasagna is SO GOOD. A bit chaotic during the lunch but that's probably because its always popular (and with good reason)
K. M.
Great coffee shop with good cakes etc. Decent amount of sitting space and good coffee!
M. M.
Nice cake and good selection of tea and coffee.
g. c.
Great sandwiches looks like an American deli

K. L.

G.
Great hot chocolate. Good selection of cakes, pies, quiches, salads and sandwiches. Table service or takeaway.
H. M.
Very nice bakery with large selection of cakes, also vegan and gluten-free options. Definitely recommend it!
M. R.
Good outdoor seating, lovely staff, generous portions of delicious food. Nice coffee.
A. K.
I was disappointed as I have been to their long-standing cafe in Bruntsfield many times and it is always good and freshly made. This just didn't have the same attention to detail and service was a bit hit and miss
D. H.
Great food. Slow service. But literally the best sandwich I've ever eaten.
s. M.
Great Edinburgh coffee, lovely goodies and proper deli sandwiches. Highly recommend
s. r.
Friday lunchtime was busy but the staff handled all the customers politely and efficiently. I highly recommend the Croque Monsieur.
