Reviews of Wellington Coffee
L. R.
Sweet little spot with good service. We all enjoyed our drinks and the staff.
As an FYI - It's down a few steps and the seating is spread out - I would say this spot is not accessible to all.
J. I.
Tried the fruit scone and it was really tasty. Coffee was okay too. The outside area and the toilet were rather dirty which made it less nice to sit and enjoy the tasty breakfast.
A. R.
Some of the finest coffee going in Edinburgh. It’s tucked away on one of the corners of George Street on the basement level, but don’t be put off by this. The cosy cafe has delicious pastries and some very tasty espresso. Perfect place to stop by when you’re visiting the center
C. L.
Lovely atmosphere with delicious latte and croissant! Hot chocolate is good as well.
J. F.
The coffee at Wellington was amazing, as well as the pastries.
The thing that brings the place down from a 5 is the service. The male barista and the manager were super friendly, but I had one issue with a female server. The server gave us our coffees, then came running out to swap them with the people behind us, who didn’t order oat milk. The server then proceeded to blame us for not noticing that they weren’t made with oat milk. If they worked on that issue, it would be 5 stars
A. G.
Great place to get some coffee. Scones are massive and delicious. Great atmosphere and music. Friendly staff.
M. R.
Cosy little coffee shop nestled away in Edinburgh City. It is quite small though but clean and friendly and the coffee is delicious!
う. N.
Coffee and sweets are fantastic!!!!! The staff are friendly :) small, cozy cafe and always full of people!
H.
I was there in a cold night. Inside feels like a fairytale but the chair weren’t comfortable inside like if you want to grab a quick coffe and leave is perfect as I loved their Mocca but for going and sitting with friends it’s maybe not the perfect place. Although I didn’t try the tables outside so that was my opinion about the inside only
D. G.
Cozy little cafe with delicious scones and very tasty clotted cream! Go in hungry because portion sizes are big- and I’m not complaining about that!
C. C.
Edinburgh latte institution, opening daily from 7am during the week and 8am on the weekend. Full espresso menu (no filter coffee) served with a selection of seasonal tray bakes, scones and cakes. If you’re looking for a good local experience and only have time for one coffee in town this is your best bet.
Wellington have used the same reliable coffee beans since opening in 2008! Red Brick espresso beans from Square Mile Coffee, London.
F. S.
This is the best coffee I've found in central Edinburgh by a long way. The cheese and jalapeno scones are delicious and the carrot cake the best I've ever had. Free tap water always available and it's lovely to sit out if the weather is dry. Staff are lovely too.
C. R.
Very cute café, the staff are lovely, the coffee is delicious and the scones and cake were amazing!
A. K.
Scone and jam with hot cold coffee. Could there even be anything more classic than that? And wellington does it best! Came here are getting a recommendation, and I was not at all disappointed. Friendly staff with a charming demeanor.
M. J.
Popped in during a trip to Edinburgh, ordered a hot chocolate very quick service and plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors.
S. M.
great staff even when the place is busy.
Good coffee and pastry.
nice atmosphere inside with good music. perfect for a coffee break with a friend or 2.
the terrasse is great too.
O. C.
Great coffee and the carrot cake is one of the best I have had.
J. S.
Cozy cafe with an unique patio (was below the street level and cute)!! Loved the scone and cappuccino!
P. H. Q.
Great coffee and very kindly staff. Highly recommend
B.
Though the reviews where very high for this place, my expectations had also been high. We come from a country where we are coffee connoisseur. Though the milk was done well, there didn't feel any taste of coffee at all. Barely a hint.
Maybe I had come on a bad day?
M. G.
Tiny cafe but cappuccino was good! Nice location too.
V. C.
The carrot cake is rich in texture and in good size.
D. M.
Excellent coffee ☕ shop and carrot cake PICTURED 😋
M. D. C.
Very cosy café! Delicious Chai latte, it's a small place so it's always crowded, they also have some tables outside but I wouldn't recommend it because it's too cold!
C. J.
Absolutely loved my experience here. Coffee amazing and service really good. Really nice atmosphere
j. w.
So many things to see, enjoying a nice oat cappucino.
Roasted nutty bitter coffee, energising boost of medicine.
Seeing different people from all over the world for the festival fringe.
Nice friendly staff. Didn't catch name but very approachable and hard workers.
Never go wrong with private coffee shops.
Very busy for a quite stop of coffee.
Inside was nice small but cosy.
I. P.
The best scones in Edinburgh very delicious and fresh. The coffee is also very good. Visit this place very early otherwise you will not get any seat or scone:) only negative point is that it is very small an that there are not much seats left. The staff is also very friendly. I will come again.
S. C.
Nice little coffe shop in a great location. There is a small amount of indoor and outdoor seating.
They have good coffee, a bitvwaek for my liking but still decent. Prices are reasonable and staff were friendly.
They have a good selection of cakes. The scones looked great, cheese and jalapeno 😍
R. B.
Yes it’s a 1/4 of the size of most cafes, but it’s got 4 times as much character! Even on busy days I could always find a table outside or at my favourite window seat. Best latté in the city and my favourite place to much on a scone with jam + clotted cream while people watching George street above.
M. D.
Consistently brilliant coffee, probably the best flat white in Edinburgh. Staff are very friendly. The place is bloody tiny, usually get takeaway.
A. S.
Always a great coffee here, service was fast and friendly this morning, a must stop every time I am in Edinburgh
A.
So tiny cafe in the middle of the street the vibes are awesome they have a very good cappuccino and nice scone.
J. K.
Cozy place with not a lot of seating inside but there are additional seats available outside. LOVED the small cafe vibe and their GREAT coffee and pastries.
J. K. K.
Nice weather, sitting outside. Friendly people made me feeling better. Carrot cake is delicious.
R. L.
Trusty old Wellington's. Still serving really great coffee after all these years. A real city centre institution that's kept it simple and high quality. Full marks!
N.
Used to get my coffee there all the time when I was a student in Edinburgh. I took a trip back to Edinburgh a little while ago and was not disappointed.
Absolutely recommend having coffee + scones
D. W.
Great to see Square Mile coffee far from London. Beautifully presented milk drinks, with some indoor and outdoor seating.
B.
Second stop on my tour of Edinburgh, looking for specialist coffee spots. Thoroughly enjoyed my long black, pleasant flavour right to the bottom of the cup! This would be one of my regulars if I lived in this wonderful city.
A.
Great selection of independent coffee's with fantastic flavours and a good selection of treats ranging from brownies to scones even very photogenic carrot cake, lovely outside seating area that helps to take some time away from the busy city without going too far. Has all the usual utilities and Wi-fi would recommend to anyone looking for a good coffee or anyone needing to get some peace from there busy day.
J. W.
Compact coffee shop with outside seating. I'm a tea drinker so don't put too much credence in this review. The tea was OK, but that's probably the most you can expect from a coffee shop.
P. E.
Cute, very small cafe. I enjoyed the coffee & brownie, however the cafe is VERY small and the seating was a bit difficult, quite cramped. Also felt the coffee was on the higher end of prices for Edinburgh. Overall it was good, would go again during a quieter time of day for a small coffee treat!
T. M.
Hidden away beneath Penhaligon's, you could easily miss this gem of a coffee house.
There's definitely some competition in the Newtown when it comes to great coffee and Wellington Coffee is up there with the top contenders. With a handful of tables the atmosphere is very cosy and the decor adds to the quaint charm with what seems to be, original tiling and wood paneling.
If you're in the area in need of a pick me up and perhaps something a little sweet, be sure to pop in here.
Something to note here, like most of the Newtown basement properties, accessibility can be a bit of an issue here, with a few steep steps down to enter.
C. W.
The rain was pouring down something fierce and I needed to get somewhere dry. I didn't want to end up in some chain cafe somewhere, and so I was rather delighted when I stumbled upon Wellington Coffee. I carefully went down the stairs to the entrance, and on opening the door was greeted with a warm smile - and the sight of some fresh scones on the counter. I struck up a conversation with another rain refugee, and when the clouds began to clear I was actually a little sorry - I had had such a wonderful time in this brilliant little cafe.
A. m.
Best coffee we had while visiting The Fringe. Had to go again before we headed back home to England... love to know which coffee bean is ground?
S. S.
It's a small and busy place but very cozy. It has seatings both inside and outside. The food and drink are both delicious and the price is fair. The staff is friendly.
O. T.
Really nice staff, very attentive and made delicious coffee. Bit expensive but worth it for the great vibe and amazing service
S. H.
Boutique coffee house just off Princes street. A small but beautifully formed hideaway to get your daily fix with seating both inside and out. Coffee, tea, cold drinks and treats all on the menu for your enjoyment.
P. M.
Enjoyed a snack and a good cup of coffee in this small busy corner cafe. Staff were efficient and welcoming.
N. B.
Coffee is excellent as our the scones but for the love of Jesus would someone please clean the bathroom - manky !
C. M.
Cute cafe, quick service and good coffee. Only 4 stars because the female server/bariata was quite rude/not friendly.
L. C.
Beautiful bespoke coffee place. Latte was beautiful and espresso was beautifully extracted. Would be back! What a cozy little gem!
N. R.
Such good coffee in a lovely little coffee shop ☺️ Highly recommend it and I'm a picky with my coffee 😝
K. K.
Very small, thus fills up quickly. Friendly staff and a good place to people watch. Scones were super delicious! Loved it.
Z. S. (. L. E.
You can see a reel of my visit on Instagram- @MyLittleEdinburgh
Gorgeous spot, excellent coffee and the short bread was delish. Can’t wait to go back!
R. K.
Small cafe with friendly staffs ^ ^ 4/5 for coffee taste: )
C.
I really like this spot. Good coffee and good vibes. Plus they have Oatly which, If you like Oat Lattes as much as I do, is VERY important. Pretty decent people watching too which is also on my café judging rubric. If you find yourself in City Center this is hands down the go-to café.
M. S.
Not messing around, some of the best coffee in central Edinburgh is directly opposite a Starbucks
Fortunately, some weirdos go to Starbucks instead. So while the queue can be long (it's worth it!), it could be much worse: you could queue for longer at Starbucks, and then have to drink a Starbucks.
Wellington makes your tastebuds happy.
S. N.
Really good coffee, a cool spot, plus a free hot chocolate for my daughter
M. R.
Great coffee and lovely shortbread biscuit.
j.
best carrot cake ever!
scone is very soft.
cozy place.
coffee is okay
k. h.
If you’re after actually good coffee in Scotland, which is hard to find, look no further than this wee gem. Aussies and Kiwis rejoice
R. K.
Disappointing service. Uncomfortable seating. OK brownie. Scone and chai latte were tasty though.
N. D.
Nice place to grab an outdoor seat and enjoy your coffee - but it is quite busy and you may have to wait.
M. M.
Lovely wee cafe. I'd suggest taking away rather than sitting in. It's very tiny on the inside. There's a very small number of spaces available to sit in. There are a few outside but it's way too cold to sit outside in the winter. The coffee and hot chocolate are top notch - high quality, freshly made and delicious. You can also get treats like croissants, scones, flapjacks, cookies etc.
T. G.
Having not been to edinburgh in 3 years we stopped by and it is as good as I remembered... great service, very busy little with bloody good coffee!
N. G.
Excellent coffee and lovely service. Small cosy place shop.
H. W.
A very popular cafe that is hidden away. I had a lovely fruit scone with jam and cream and a pot of Earl Grey tea. It was very tasty. Would definitely recommend this place if you are in Edinburgh.
L. T.
Fantastic coffee shop on George Street in Edinburgh. It is in the basement below Penhaligons and has a cute little courtyard as well as on street seating.
They don't serve sandwiches, but they do make delicious home-made cakes, and I would highly recommend the cheese and jalapeño scones. The coffee is bean to cup and they also have oat milk as a non-dairy option.
It's a small but wonderful find in the heart of Edinburgh, the staff are friendly and I would recommend popping in to either grab a coffee on the go, or sit a while and people watch (if enjoying the street seating) when visiting the city.
P. C.
Perfect place for the all-important morning coffee.
A great little corner-café with it’s own unique character and ambience that epitomises what I love about small, private coffee stores.
It’s my go-to for the morning caffeine intake when I’m working in the area and having now been served by multiple baristas; every staff member has been pleasant, efficient when brewing and enhanced the character of the store.
The prices are on-the-nose with what I’d ask for and considering what the Starbucks across the road will charge, I leave tips as often as my bank balance allows me.
Overall I highly recommend, good job.
M. C.
Fantastic coffee, friendly staff and tasty carrot cake; but very limited in options. It's also tricky to get a seat and if you get one you feel in the way of staff & customers but still despite this there are few places as great as it. Recommended if you like Rich, Dark coffee.
M. J.
Try long black coffee, it's definitely superb. Atmosphere is very nice and good staffs.
L. T.
Great breakfast (scones and hot chocolate), great service.
f. h.
The service was excellent and the food was delicious. When something went wrong with the food, the clerk immediately replaced it and gave us another cake for free!
D. G.
Best Chai Latte I've ever had, carrot cake pretty good too.
P. M.
Lovely coffee and excellent baking. The cheese scones are some of the best! Topped with bacon!!
J. L.
The very best coffee. Made by charming people. It’s hard to find good coffee and this is as good as Oz.
L. R.
Nice cosy place with not so much options but that's enough. Didn't try the pastries but they look amazing
J. V.
Lovely scones, good cappuccino but the outside terras has not been cleaned for months.
S. A.
Amazing coffee 👌🏻👍🏻
A. B.
Best Coffee I've ever had in my life. I've been drinking flat whites since I was 21 and this has got to be the most perfectly balanced coffee.
A. F.
Lovely coffee shop with excellent coffee and delicious pastries. Well worth heading to.
F. C.
Great little coffe shop. Easy to miss as it's downstairs on the corner.
T. E.
A cosy basement coffee shop with good coffee and authentic decor. This place provides a pleasing contrast to the chains. If you visit then be sure to look at the ceiling. The range of pastries is small but well-considered.
N. B.
Excellent coffee. Not much more you need to know. Pastries/sweet snacks are great too.
B. T.
Staff were great and kind and the tables outside are nice on a sunny day! Unfortunately the coffee wasn’t my favorite.
S.
Love the vibe, love the coffee even more. Hidden gem!
A. A.
Very nice coffee and pastries. Highly recommend if you are in the area.
L. G.
The best coffee (or at least iced oat latte) in Edinburgh! Amazing staff as well, very friendly and fast. A bit small to drink in, but perfect for a takeaway coffee. Good location. A bit pricey, but considering the quality and that it’s in the centre of Edinburgh expectable.
S. P.
Lovely little coffee shop with fantastic carrot cake.
V. D.
Feels like a very local place! Delicious coffee and recommend getting a scone.
S.
Nice scones and an amazing hot chocolate with a delicious homade!! marshmallow.
E. S.
The chai latte is delicious
P. K.
Nice place, but famous and many people have been there.
E. S.
Excellent quality coffee in a lovely quirky corner coffeeshop, a welcome break from multinational chain coffeehouses. Wellington coffee is one of my favourite in Edinburgh.
H. T.
Nice lil cosy coffee place in the heart of Edinburgh
S. L.
Open early doors on a Saturday. Only specialty place at that time.
Coffee was great - even have own made oat milk as well. Nice!
R. S.
Wonderful little coffee shop, excellent coffee, excellent cakes, and staff were super. The courtyard is a brilliant place to sit and chill when the weather is good.
E. M.
Wellington is a sweet little spot down a short flight of stairs, well located in the shopping district.
Friendly, chatty baristas pull a fine cup, with a rich deep flavor. Lots of tasty treats come in big portions. When the weather is decent, there's outside tables and chairs. On a soggy cold day there's limited seating (6 stools) inside, really only comfortably about 4 people.
D. R.
Good coffee; gooey, rich brownie. Yes, please 😋
J. L.
Great coffee and cozy place
R. G.
Cozy little coffee shop: Good coffee, excellent scones.
i. m.
Lovely tea and scone. Very dog friendly. Great position on corner of George St. Quirky outside seating area. I will definitely be back on visits to Edinburgh city centre
S. K.
You wouldn’t notice from far away as it’s on the basement! Cozy but stylish cafe. Great taste of coffee. Really relaxing in a tiny cafe.
M. G.
Best Scones for me in Edinburgh so far!
J. P.
Nice coffee but it can be difficult to get a seat inside during lunch hours.
S. S.
Brilliant find. Cute artisanal coffee shop with good music, friendly service, great coffee & the best almond croissant!
A. T.
Brilliant coffee, nice staff
A. H.
Lovely independent coffee shop with awesome coffee and great cake. Quite small inside so can get fairly busy.
H. K.
Tasty coffee in the city centre. Very close to princes Street so a good alternative to Costa/Starbucks if you fancy supporting a smaller business. No savoury food but tasty little cakes, and some sheltered outdoor seating for when the weather is nice.
E. G.
it's a nice little typical city cafe with the cosy atmosphere and lovely food (the scones are amazing) but like most of these cafes it suffers from not having much space but if you manage to get a seat then you'll definitely enjoy it. Note: I gave 4 stars because the seating dilemma but don't let that make you think this isn't as good as it looks!
D. R. F.
Service is good and a really nice cosy interior. However, my partner got a soy latte and when she was about half way through it she noticed the rest was all lumpy/curdled at the bottom. Took it back and the staff member claimed that's what happens with soy milk. Never had such a thing happen anywhere else.
Anyway, staff member was happy to replace it with a fresh one but seemed odd they would claim that curdled coffee is the norm. Good music inside.
A. G.
Such great coffee in a very cute and cosy setting. We also had the carrot cake and it was to die for - amazing cream cheese icing. The staff were also very friendly and even remembered our order when we came back the next day (as I had oat milk in my latte). If you’re a coffee and cake person - you’ll love this place!
C. K.
This place does probably one of the best coffees on the main streets of edunbourgh. Usually places are too burnt or bitter tasting but these guys know how to make a good coffee! 👍
L. &. D.
Good coffee in a cute location with outdoor seating
D. H.
This a nice little artisanal cafe which offers a good range of delicious baked goods and really excellent coffee. The interior is rather small and can be crowded, however on a nice day you can spill out onto the pavement and enjoy a bit of sunshine with your coffee. It seems to be really popular for coffees to-go for trendy office workers. Good personality and nice to shop locally. Worth a visit if you are a local
J. M.
Cute coffee shop with delicious lattes and friendly staff!
C. S.
One of my favourite spots for coffee on George Street. The coffee is superb. Other good coffee shops have sprung up in the vicinity in the past few years such as Burr & Co. and Lowdown, but all in all Wellington is my go to. The wee outside area is a small hidey hole of calm and perfect to dip in for a quick scone and espresso on the hoof.
F. F.
Excellent scones
They even had a 1/2 price deal on everything during certain week days (August 2020)
M.
This remains one of the stalwarts of speciality coffee in the city. Nice sweet items too, and he small basement outside area is so pleasant in good weather.
J. F.
The service is slow. Bad.
The coffee is wonderful! Good.
Great location. Nothing close by hits the mark quite like it. Kind, patient staff, calm atmosphere beloved by readers, and with some interesting art on its walls.
최.
Deffinitely one of the best coffee place in town :)) Love to be back
G. D.
Very, very good coffee. Can be busy between 8-9am, but service is very efficient and you won't wait long. Quieter during the day if you want to sit, although it's not really setup for working. There are a couple of nice secluded tables outside, below street level that are great for hiding away with a book on a warm day. Steep stairs and a relatively small space mean this isn't really suitable for kids. Takes contactless payment for just a single coffee which is a nice bonus.
B. T.
My flat white was delicious with nice art. Nice outside seating.
Coffee was 5 star flavour. I have a 4 star review cause they could use some more snacks. Also the inside temperature was a billion degrees.
L. B.
Stopped by here for breakfast and coffee! They only served baked goods. I had the fruity scone, my partner got the cheese and bacon scone - absolutely divine. Loved their coffee, had a chai latte as well - it's a pretty sweet chai but if that's not your thing you can ask to have it less sweet! Would definitely recommend this place!
K. M.
Little cosy coffee place in the middle of the city centre. I passed there by lots of times and never noticed the place. Was told by a friend of this place and now I do not regret discovering it. I had a great coffee with some great scones there.
The only minus is the fact that the place is tiny. Few tables but really great tasting scones and coffee! Worth trying out when cruising around.
D. a.
Good coffee for good prices. Small but very cozy place
O. N.
Wonderful out of the way coffeeshop. It s well worth the visit. By out of the way, i mean it s not in the typical touristy old town. They obviously have their regular customers, as well they have attracted coffee enthusiasts. We were recommended by a friend in Cork City to visit Wellington Coffeeshop. The seating is a bit rough on the buttocks. There is outside seating. Not suitable for people in a wheelchair, as there are stairs. The staff are well informed and talented in making a mean Jo.
K. M.
Great friendly service and good coffee, although strong! Small amount of indoor sitting space but a few tables outside - and they'll bring the coffee out to you.
T. H.
My favourite coffee place of all time.
Always perfect coffee, great pastries and scones but more of a coffee and cake café than a food café. As such, they do the coffee great and the staff are always friendly and ensure that you always get a perfect coffee.
The blend they use is Red Brick, one of my favourites; the roasting company are called square mile and they have a broad range of tasty high quality blends, so definitely check them out if you're a fellow Wellington regular.
Pastries are always good, ideal with a coffee!
Indoors is nice, and they also have outdoor seating which is kind of beneath the level of the street, so it feels a bit removed from the road which makes it still a comfortable area to chat to friends in.
Fully recommended. I make all my friends and family go there to see what coffee should be like. They are always the "ideal café" I find myself comparing every other café too.
Please keep it up and keep pleasing tastebuds of Edinburgh! I've been going for years and will continue to do so!
H. S.
Easily the best coffee on George St.
J. R. R.
Great coffee, great cake (we had long blacks and carrot cake). Convenient location with a friendly atmosphere. Music at a comfortable level, service is polite and thoughtful. Small venue but we came at 3pm and there was space, including outdoors (weather permitting).
M.
Great coffee and amazing almond croissant
F. B.
Really good coffee and tasty cappuccino. I love their tiffin!
A. N.
excellent place to have a Small break for a cup of coffee or some nice piece of Cake. The coffee is wonderful! really very delicious, and I fully recommend the carrot cake! best so far in the Town. Is really a nice cozy place for people to meet Friends or for people who travel and Have break for a cup of coffee.
N. C.
Ignore the two chain coffee shops across the street and enjoy one of the best coffee's I've had, if you enjoy Coffee like me you will love this hidden gem.
A. B.
Love the Wellington. It has been my go-to coffee shop all through the lockdown when I have been able to go on a walk with friends. Never had a bad experience and the staff are always friendly
J. N.
Best coffee and scones in Edinburgh. And they know how to make a Piccolo.
S. S.
Awesome coffee and tasty cakes. I always try and find a way of passing by to have a coffee. Taste is really quite different to anything I normally. Unique. Perfect drinking temp too but not that you have to drink it straight away.
L. K.
I love this very small independent coffee shop. Hot chocolate is fantastic and the scones are massive. Clotted cream is available for the scone, SOLD. Staff are always super pleasant.
I. K.
The coffee is amazing nice to be able to get Square Mile this far north, the staff are so nice and really helpful. The part is definatley the scones, massive baked on site served with lashings of clotted cream and jam. They so big, good as a Lunch or split between to for a snack.
A. A.
Their hot chocolate is one of the best that Edinburgh has to offer. Very warm and cosy. I loved the variety of cakes on display. The scones looked amazing too. I couldn't try them as I wasn't hungry. I will definitely visit again. YaaY !
K. H.
Very busy but still great coffee and service
A. D.
Warm friendly welcome, good tea and flapjack
D. d. P.
Haven't been (/bean?) everywhere yet, but this is my favourite coffee in Edinburgh. (Lattes and flat whites. Not sure if it's black)
M. A.
Stopped in for coffee and a scone before heading to the bus station. They make an excellent flat white and the fruit scone was delicious. It's a small place, though so seating is limited. The counter by the window is a great spot to people watch while having breakfast.
J. B.
Really high quality coffee and baked goods. The carrot cake is unreal.
D. M.
Fine coffee, decent croissant.
Friendly busy staff.
Stairs to negotiate as it's below street level.
Toilet clean
E. B.
Perfect location for sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy life
C. D.
Getting good coffee in Scotland, can be a bit of a struggle. Wellington certainly fits the bill of "Truly excellent coffee". Reasonably priced, very good quality coffee, and the fact that is below the street means it dampens the traffic noise a bit.
I would definitely recommend a long black coffee with a fruit scone. They are both top notch.
One of their staff, could use some lessons in proper manners though. Unfortunate but off-putting.
H. A.
A very good coffee shop which focusses on espresso based coffees. I'm usually a filter or drip person so am pleasantly surprised with this place which I've been going to for years. So much better than Costas and Starbucks littered around
Note, the food is slightly expensive but a very good location
D. D.
Delicious coffee and pastries. Great location with both indoor/outdoor seating. I was lucky with the weather today to be able to sit outdoors and enjoy the beautiful nature in the distance.
A. M.
Came in on a very cold afternoon needing some warmth. Lovely staff, good scones and cake and enjoyed the coffee
A.
Cosy little cafe inside, I love it for a little relax if I’ve been in town or it’s a nice place to meet a pal before they have to get the train etc. Seating outside too
I. C.
Amazing coffee shop, can't recommend enough !
A. A.
Small but perfectly formed, WC provide some of the best made coffee in Edinburgh. There's limited seating inside, more outside when the weather permits and the option to take away. Friendly staff.
J. M.
Wow, only word I can use for the flat white and fruit scone I had. Coffee is a little small compared to other places, but it is top quality and won't leave you bloated by being too much. Not many seats in this place so get in quick!
L. R.
A much needed coffee hideout on George street. Not a lot of seating in here but the coffee is tremendous and will zing you back to life if more shopping is required.
They have some fantastic brownies and croissants to but also
T. P.
Great coffee but a bit cold for my liking... I like my coffee extra hot which they didn't seem to understand...
R. R.
Small coffee shop in the basement of a building on the corner of George St and Frederick St in the New Town. Good stopping off point for a quick coffee or for a longer social chat. The scones and cakes looked appetizing but I did not try them on this occasion.
J. D.
Wellington has the best coffee I've had in Edinburgh. I highly recommend the flat white. The scones are also excellent.
l. k.
This actually is the best coffee in Edinburgh, on par with the best in London. It’s quite far ahead of many of the other cafés in Edinburgh, particularly central.
The café is small and not really a place you could spend too long in. The pasties also are ok but not amazing.
But if you are just looking for a great coffee in Edinburgh, this place is hard to beat.
D. C.
Had one of these best scones ever. The cheese and bacon was so tasty. Must not forget the excellent coffee and it was good value for central Edinburgh.
J. K.
Nice little independent coffee shop. The coffee is quite distinctive, and therefore a bit of an acquired taste, and there isn't much seating room. Still, a nice change from the usual big coffee chains.
R. H.
Stocking Square Mile coffees and making excellent flat whites Wellington is a handy and cosy coffee spot. The interior is small but nicely laid out and welcoming, as you'd expect the coffee is seriously good but the thing that I loved most were the fruit scones, served with a good wodge of butter so you can spread it thickly on both halves
S. T.
One of the first places to serve a flat white in Edinburgh, they do it best. Nice service and fresh baked goods and a little seating area outside which is very popular. A good lunch time spot for a quick coffee and a sandwich.
K. S.
A nice independent coffee house with outdoor seating.
I only had a tea (they use proper tea leaves) but my friend has had coffee from here on numerous occasion and swears it is the best coffee in Edinburgh.
R. T.
This really is one of those hidden-gem style places. It does feel a wee bit claustrophobic, and has rather limited space and seating (especially when one can't use the outside seating because of the weather), but if you are looking for one of the best places to get a coffee and a scone or 'high tea' (jam + clotted cream, obviously) then this may what you are looking for!
L. G.
Very friendly and quick staff serving great coffee at reasonable prices. The pastries looked good so will be returning to sink my teeth into them!
a. b.
this is one of the best coffee shops i have ever been to. the coffee, tea and hot chocolates are absolutely amazing - as are they scones with clotted cream. the vibe is very relaxed and cosy. simple but stunning - it was our favorite thing to do in edinburgh. the guys who work there deserve a special mention - very skilled at what they do, friendly but respectful and the kind of people you hope like you as much as you like them. ps - anyone who has reviewed the coffee as bad has no taste, its perfect.
C. B.
If I could I would give this place four and a half stars. The inside area is perhaps a little bit to cosy (good luck finding somewhere to sit in the winter) and the outside sitting area could do with a little more shade and unfortunately attracts a lot of discarded cigarettes from the passers by. Still, it's my favourite place in the area for a cup of tea.
P. S.
Very nice coffee and carrot cake was delicious
N.
I came across this place one afternoon and ordered a short (single) macchiato. It was one of the best coffee's i've had in a long while. I ordered 2 more and each was just as fantastic. Clean, tasty and no bitterness. I'd become used to all short macs being just slightly bitter at best. Game changer.
O. A.
Cute little coffee shop in the busy part of Edinburgh. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Fresh baked scones and cake on offer. Coffee is delicious. A must try!
D. B.
Downstairs, tiny and cramped. And that's the reason for a mere three stars. I have walked down the stairs a couple of times to find it full up. That's easily done because it has very few seats.
The coffee is OK but then Edinburgh has a plethora of places that do good coffee. I fail to see the attraction of the place though others seem to like it.
S. 1.
Used to love this place but now the service is slow and the coffee served barely warm. Sat outside and waited almost 30 minutes for a coffee and when it came it was nothing special.
P. W.
Whilst I have been here a few times,on this occasion I was served by a lady with brown hair and had to ask her to repeat herself over the sound of the coffee machine to which she was extremely rude and rolled her eyes at me even after I apologised. Luckily the food and coffee is outstanding...!
l. a.
Little gem of a coffee shop. One of the best scones ive had, even at 15:30. Brownie is amazing here too. And staff lovely. Will be coming back :-) thank you.
Z. P.
Size doesn’t matter – so proves the extremely bijou Wellington Coffee. Located down a set of stairs on the corner of George Street and Hanover Street, it might be more compact than the nearby coffee giants but it's better to compromise on space than coffee! Their rich, creamy espressos – served with a glass of water – go down like velvet. The flat whites are fabulous and even their soya milk mochas are the best we’ve ever tasted. Their chunky scones are hit the spot – and they've recently started doing a bacon variety! Their date flapjacks are also a small triumph – just like this café.
M. K.
So glad we found this place on a list of places to find great scones in Edinburgh since that is exactly what we were looking for. Cozy with some seating, great coffee and the scones are definitely amazing!
T.
Good coffee, and a place to sit on the table by the roadside if you want to rest your feet. Free tapwater , staff friendly.
R. S.
No trip to Edinburgh is complete without a visit to Wellington Coffee.
G. B.
A Kiwi friend came to town and whilst staying took one look at my jar of sad supermarket instant coffee (I don't actually drink coffee so it's for guests only) and stated for the duration of her stay we'd be having coffee out! They take their coffee seriously in New Zealand! So a local foodie expert recommended this as it was also run by Kiwis. We tried it one grey and dreicht Sat afternoon and it was a wonderful haven.
The staff were really friendly, the coffee definitely met my friends high standards and we shared a homemade cake which was baked to perfection. It's quite small so you have to be prepared to squeeze in but the window seats provide a great place to watch the world go by while you take a well earnt break from it.
L. S.
Friendly staff, cozy small place with nice atmosphere and good music at a nice volume. Nice coffee and tea selection with some simple delicious treats, cakes, cheese scones and other things. Good place to chat with friends
S. H.
My favourite coffee and some of the best scones in Edinburgh. It's just a pity they don't do the scone and coffee deal any more. Or maybe just as well!
L. K.
Good coffee well made. Is all about the coffee. Pricey. Small selection of some pastries, cake and scones on offer. Has inside and outside seating available.
D. M.
Very decent coffee - worth a trip if in Edinburgh
Ł. P.
Really good coffee, tasty brownies and carrot cake. Newspapers to read. Super friendly staff. Beautiful decor and great location. Tables outside if you want to smoke.
K. D.
Excellent coffee in tiny area with outdoor tables
A. L.
Tried this place for the first time (finally!!) and it was fab! Their chai latte was insanely good
m. s.
Really fantastic coffee and lovely place to people watch for a while.
Long oorning hours too so ideal for that earky walk
D. N. A.
Great wee coffee bar tucked away amongst a mass of Costas and Starbucks in the centre of town.
Do yourself a favour and grab a home made scone while you're here and avoid having your name yelled across a counter when you collect your order from the friendly staff.
B. H.
Lovely little hole in the wall (a downstairs hole in the wall!) coffee shop. Perfect for a morning latte and watch the people walking by. Scones are excellent!
R. F.
Great coffee in a central location. Small place but great atmosphere. A little oasis
M. P.
Great coffee at Wellington, among the best in Edinburgh in my opinion. Great pitstop if you've spent a morning shopping around George Street, but don't expect to sit in - it's tiny!
J. H.
top coffee in the center of New Town
L. M.
Excellent coffee - delicious and d
A. A.
We used to love this place, but the service has been rude lately. Such a shame, because the coffee and pastries are delicious.
I. V.
As all coffee shops at the moment they are serving from the door but it was fast and convenient and as always the coffee was great. Expensive, but then no for George Street prices
S. S.
Walked past a million times but never been in, but got recommended as worth a go! Went for take away coffee, wasn't very busy but coffee still took a little while, was worth the wait though, very strong and fresh tasting.
W. R.
Delicious flat white. Gorgeous looking cakes and pastries (but didn't try any so can't comment on those...). Lovely friendly staff. Very small premises.
D. B.
Fantastic little independent! Great coffee and friendly staff. Very small property but also outside seating. Very cosy.
S.
I thought the service was basic and very, very slow but I suppose it's the was the virus has effected everything. Upon asking where our order was we were simply told 'yup'! Not the response I was looking for. A bit strange.
L. T.
Edinburgh is awash with “craft coffee” and whilst most are good few are excellent. This is one of the excellent ones. Unpretentious place serving top notch coffee.
S. F.
Decent coffee, excellent hot chocolate. Not too expensive either. Nice wee place, they've done a lot with a small space.
M. K.
Great coffee but prices keep climbing sadly.....£3.25 for a latte is more than most other places
S. Y.
Fantastic coffee. It's very small so make that coffee to go! In the summer there are some tables outside, however this particular pavement is very busy so take that in mind.
J. G.
Best coffee in town. Hands down.
M. W.
Popped in for a quick drink while exploring. This is a small, quirky coffee shop that is well worth a visit. The latte was excellent.
D. v. d. B.
Excellent espresso and great scone. Nuff said.
B. L.
Great wee coffee place in prime location, if you prefer to enjoy your coffee anywhere BUT Starbucks then go here! Cosy, friendly atmosphere but be prepared not to get a seat on the weekends!
L. F. Č.
five years later and i still remember the heavenly taste of their scone with clotted cream
Y. M. F.
What an amazing coffee experience. Why people actively choose to go to Starbucks across the road eludes me. Meh, more tasty coffee for me. Just please don't ever shut down!
G. C.
A great coffee. Great house blend and always a guest roast to try too. The scones are delicious.
G. S.
Some of the best coffee in edinburgh! Amazing cakes, especially the flapjack, and staff are always so lovely! Love this place!
K. M.
I loved it when Wellington served panini too, but let's not quibble about what is undoubtedly one of Edinburgh's top cafes. The only substantial problem I have is that it's safe to assume you won't easily get a seat at busy times. First worlders...
Wellington (along with Castello and Cairngorm coffee) is a fabulous little island of independence in an area dominated by chains. Use it, love it.
S. L. (.
Great wee independent in the heart of the city. Worth a visit - although it's often busy for sit down, so take away is quite often the option!
Great baristas and lovely chat. Worth a visit if you're passing by! x
L. C.
I thought good coffee didn't exist in Scotland. Then I was wrong. These guys have the proper kit and are heaving every morning - when I'm in Edinburgh I only get my coffee from one place.
D. M.
Very good. Nice coffee, tasty cake and a lovely piece of shortbread. Friendly service too.
G. D.
Flat white and cheese & Bacon scone always excellent. Coffee served at proper temp, so ask if you prefer it scalding!
R. K.
Great little coffee shop. The coffee is usually superb but sadly not a good cup today. Too bitter!
M. A.
Great Coffee place! Scones super delicious, staff really friendly! Definitely recommendable!
M. B.
Cosy, friendly, well priced. Croissant was delicious. Coffee was ok, just the wrong side of bitter for my personal taste though.
S. J.
Best coffee in town centre. Staff aren’t the most accommodating but you can sympathise with them when you see half the loop jobs they serve. Witnessed a Dutch man reading the Guardian newspaper upside down.
K. F.
Cracking wee coffee shop in central Edinburgh. Really nice quality coffee, not much food though so really more of a coffee shop than somewhere to eat, although the scones are good if you need a snack.
E.
Service with a smile in this small and cosy cafe - with a choice selection of cakes to accompany your excellent coffee or tea.
M. S.
Nice little place. The scones were very good and the clotted cream as well. I didn't really like he marmalade.
M. B.
As an Australian (rather fussy about my coffee), this place was the best coffee I've had in the UK!
S. H.
If you are serious about coffee (ie you come from Melbourne), this will tick the box.
A. R.
Favourite coffee shop in centre of Edinburgh. I love their carrot cake and my husband loves their cheese and bacon scone.
G. H.
Great coffee, great service, pleasant happy warm welcome. What else can you ask for.
M. R.
Best coffee I've ever had! Always busy but that just shows how good it is. Would highly recommend.
H. B.
Really lovely coffee and very quickly, effectively made. Probably not the sort of place to bed down with a laptop but for a quick, high-quality coffee it's brilliant.
A. L.
Good coffee and scone stop in New Town Edinburgh
A. M.
best coffee in town and pastries (delicious scones). Worth a try and more authentic than costa or nero coffee... recommending lattes!
P. C.
A wonderful below the stairs pit stop.
Excellent coffee.
Best I've tasted.
B. M.
Great coffee, awesome location and a great cafe for a sunny day with all the outdoor seating. The coffee is a little pricey but the location makes up for the cost.
P. B.
Superb decaf coffee and one of the best croissants I’ve had.
G. K.
My favourite coffee shop in the city, great coffee and a perfect place to people watch!!
M. f.
Service was great really busy. I enjoyed my coffee and brownie. Would recommend but be prepared for it to be busy especially around lunch times.
L. K.
The best scones in town. Would be even better without the raisins *hint hint*
Ive only tried the scones and coffee, and it was worth it.
C. H.
Gorgeous little place to stop for a coffee & cake. Thanks for the delicious Americano!
D. C.
Very nice coffee and excellent service from friendly staff.
M. S.
I highly recommend this small coffee place, great taste, tried the latte with oat milk, much better than the other commercial coffee places
A. B.
The iced Americano with oat milk was sublime. Bit of queue when busy but nothing unmanageable.
B. E.
Love this cosy corner. Beautiful coffee especially recommend their flat whites. Friendly staff, cosy, intimate surroundings.
M. S.
Great coffee, great atmosphere.
G. C.
Freindly staff and fantastic Coffee in the City centre also the best place for Scones if you like a quick snack.
A. L.
Really good coffee but not the biggest place so be prepared to wait and then have nowhere to sit to enjoy that coffee.
I. B.
Lovely cafe, super friendly staff and quality coffee and baked goods, right in the heart of town! What more can you ask for!
B. B.
Best coffee in the city, but the price increased recently, Latte went from £
3 to £3.30
D. M.
Best coffee in Edinburgh, my go to coffee shop every time I'm in the city. Great cheese scones as well
A. L.
Perfect service better coffee the Costa and Starbucks. Just a little awkward to find.
l. n.
Great coffee and cosy atmosphere
R. N.
Cute little cafe on a busy thoroughfare. Enjoyed resting for a bit to watch world go by with good coffee & a mediocre scone. No WIFI.
M. R.
Great mocha! 😋
P. R.
High quality coffee served by friendly staff. Why would you bother to visit chain coffee shop opposite? Treat yourself.
M. N.
Delicious scones. Chai Latte a bit sweet for my liking but good coffee.
M. C.
Lovely tea/coffee/scones. The staff are very nice
H. W.
Great coffee. If you need a local coffee place while you’re visiting, this is the one for you!
C. S.
Due to the impressive reputation I had expected a little bit more than I got in the end.
It was nice and tasteful, but I have had better carrot cake.
S. M.
Pretty decent coffee, good wee seating area outside when the weather is good. Scones and brownies are decent.
N.
Really love getting my morning coffee here, one of the best coffee I tried so far!
C. S.
Very nice coffee and cakes, on a nice day being able to sit outside, albeit in a below street level area, makes all the difference.
.. s.
Great coffee, the cheese and bacon scones are fantastic. Only down side is that it's so small.
M. B.
I think the best oat latte I have ever had in the UK :) + Friendly staff, clean toilet
B. D.
Simply amazing coffee!
R. P.
this is a flat white... took a while to find one in Scotland. 😅
A. J.
A great little coffee shop in a cosy basement, with excellent coffee and friendly staff. Don't bother with the Starbucks on the opposite corner, this is in a different league.
I. W.
Artisan coffee and a good selection of cake to go alongside. All coffee seems to be espresso based.
K. S.
We love Wellington coffee, the coffee is consistently good, great scones and friendly staff. Thank you!
C. A.
Coffee is great, place is pretty small so often no seats available for sitting inside, particular when raining!
C. M.
Really lovely small intimate cafe with great coffee, scones and cheery staff.
K. H.
Cool vibe, great coffe and pastries
S. (.
While strolling Edinburgh, found this small gem, coffee smell brought me in this tiny place. Coffee is one of the best I ever had:)

S. F.
Fantastic friendly cute staff. They adored my cute little bunny. X ( I did not take bunny into the shop)
v. d.
Friendly, busy, good portions of made cakes, good coffee and service. Wee bit cramped which is part of the style.
L. T.
A tiny piece of perfection for coffee and brownie lovers everywhere, Wellington Coffee is my favourite place for a takeaway treat in town.
G. M.
Lovely little coffee shop with really friendly staff and tempting cakes. Can't wait to go back.
A. L.
Nice experience. Particularly good service from a guy I think called Adam with a moustache. Thanks Adam these stars are for you
J. N.
Lovely place with great coffee and the biggest scones in whole Edinburgh.
A. G.
We ordered ice coffee and they served us coffee in a can... you expect from a coffee place like this do do it by themselves... not to pre buy canned coffee and sell them to customers
M. 4.
Delicious coffee and very friendly staff.
J. H.
Tiny cute coffee shop. Quite expensive for brownies etc.
V. H.
Best coffee in Edinburgh!
n. p.
Wellington is my go-to coffee place in the city centre, their coffee is always the best and the staff clearly care about keeping it that way. This is how it should be done.
