Reviews of The Black Shed Cafe

Lovely coffee and the Victoria Sponge was fab. All served with a smile while waiting outside. Even had my water battles refilled without having to go back in. 👍😉
J. C.
A friend recommended this cafe to us, & I'm glad she did!
It's in a beautiful setting right alongside the canal.
Our breakfasts were lovely, and the staff friendly & helpful.
Will definitely return.

So much has been written about this "The Black Shed" that it was lovely to see it in real!
Supposedly a grain shed initially, then used by the government in the 1915 to 1917 as a munitions storage shed/hut and now a café/bar/come shop for all the boaters, walkers and everyone it seems. I believe that The Black Shed is now a "listed" building as well.
A very pretty picturesque area with the Patch Swing Bridge to allow cars over the bridge and/or boaters passing through on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal...
Lots of wildlife and nature around to entertain families and children...
We had a lovely portion of chips, a small bottle of Australian Chardonnay and I had a pint of the Shed Head, an American pale ale but Shed Head is Swedish...confused, well so am I! Anyways, it was a great pint of ale indeed.
Finally, the staff were friendly, welcoming and cheerful and apparently they do fantastic food and known for their English Breakfasts too..
Definitely worth a visit!

A really nice pit stop for grub and refreshments. It's pretty big too with plenty of tables available. The highlights worth note were firstly the food. We had breakfast and it was super tasty and the staff were happy to customise the menu to add extras.
Secondly, but most noteworthy was that the team working there were amazing. So friendly and easy going. They were helpful and really polite.
I'd definitely visit again.

Excellent...very friendly staff... big door stop sandwiches really tasty.. next time we'll be having a ploughmans.
A. w. s.
Arrived on hottest day in UK. Offered sandwich or salad option and iced drinks. All was great until we wanted another drink. This was just after 2.30pm. The shop had shut the doors and were leaving as it was too hot..... no offer for a last drink. All patrons left locked outside with no explanations. You obviously paid when you ordered. Sandwich was fine.
D. F.
Great cafe on the canal, lovely staff and atmosphere, very relaxing and popular.
D. R.
Nice place to eat and rest, dogs welcome, good menu, comfort food , good prices, eat in or out, ladies and gentlemen WC. river and swing bridge views, paddle boards, canoe hire. Boat trips, we had an enjoyable time here.
K. T.
Great place to take in the afternoon river scenery, also allowing free 3 hour car parking. Breakfasts, sandwiches, toasties, carvery, sweets & Friday evening fish & chips on the menu.
I had a nice pint of Shed Head beer & the wife a Shiraz, to wash down our large dish of chips - Living the dream!
S. O.
Lovely canalside cafe serving freshly made locally sourced ingredients. Good service and lovely views. Small craft shop with a variety of work from local Artisans attached. A selection of activities including Bike hire, canoe hire and Stand up Paddle Boarding are also available.

Came on two occasions, for breaks from work. Very tasty cakes, but surprised 3.50 each

D. W.

B. E.
Cafe next to the canal where you can also hire canoes and book boat trips on the canal.
They are short staffed but I didn't have to wait to long for the food.
If you are a coffee connoisseur you might not like it here but everything else was fine.
P. B.
This review is mainly for Keith and Sonia who operate their canal boat trips from The Black Shed as we didn't actually eat in the Cafe.
The food looked absolutely brilliant and good value for money though.
Our thanks go to Keith who captains the boat which took us to Purton where he moors up for 20 mins or so then returns.
His knowledge of the canal and its history is first class and his personable manner makes for a very pleasant trip....The Gruffalow viewing being the highlight of course...!!!!
We shall be returning and will be recommending both cafe and trip to family and friends.
Phil and Irene Butt.

A lovely place to visit. Staff very friendly and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was impeccable.
M. W.
Straightforward food - and good cakes - nicely set by the Sharpness canal. Plenty of space for bikes, quick service.
C. J.
Lovely place right on the edge of the canal, lots of canal activities for the brave, and Slimbridge Wetlands Trust is 2 minutes away.
D. H.
We moored up nearby for a few days so decided to pop in, it was extremely busy on a lovely hot day when the Tall Ships were on the way to Gloucester but we were served quick and the food was lovely and fresh! All reasonably priced with a priceless view!
A. L.
Good food and good service. Plenty to choose from and friendly staff. Place to rest and enjoy
M. G.
As ever a great place to visit .
J. A.
Really friendly staff, nice clean venue, good drinks and great location.
M. D.
Were late going in yesterday.
We were served up excellent cooked food.
Very helpful and friendly staff.
Lovely clean toilets.
The whole place was spotless clean..

I. T.
We had a lovely breakfast here.
It's dog friendly and has lovely friendly staff.
M. A.
Lovely food love the setting right beside the canal but if you park in the car parck be sure you give them your registration number or you get a ticket
T. B.
Lovely café with incredibly friendly staff, made us feel welcome and was very attentive. I can’t wait to go back again
J. K.
First visit to the Black Shed and will be back soon, great breakfast and nice staff ♣️🏁🇮🇲🏍️😊
P. M.
Had a lovely cycle down the towpath so this was a good place to stop for some refreshments. Good food and beer. 🍺
G. S.
Great cafe. Visited on recommendation and not disappointed. Fish and chips was huge portion! Will come back in the day time to sample boat trips on offer and buy some of the lovely looking local handicrafts. Friendly staff. Was made to feel very welcome. Stonehouse needs a place like this on the Ship Inn site once the Stroudwater navigation is opened up 😊
R.
Top place to chill on a sunny Sunday with a table by the canalside, food & drink (beers on tap) excellent, service very good as well 👍
P. S.
Spendid no nonsense basic cafe serving good food indoors and outdoors. I love the corrugated iron roof and wooden floors. Good acoustics. A good base for walks along the canal. Do remember to register your car with staff for the free car park.
J. A.
My first visit to this establishment was a good experience.
I had a coffee and a very large bacon sandwich, a meal in itself.
Well positioned on the canal Bank.free parking, if their car park is full there is a large council car 100 yards before you arrive ,also free
T. L.
A great place for a cuppa after a long walk along the Gloucester, Sharpness canal. Friendly and welcoming staff that are engaging and patient with little customers. Highly recommend.
R. J.
Right on the Gloucester Sharpness canal at Shepard patch. Lovely bacon sarnie and a coffee. Lovely staff.
J. B.
We enjoyed a morning coffee and then returned for lunch. Food and drink all good. The environment leaves a bit to be desired
M. W.
Lovely. Just what we needed after a windy walk along the canal
Friendly and welcoming.
A. L.
Popped in for bacon butties. Not disappointed.2 friendly ladies. All in all a good experience.
D. B.
Friendly cafe cum shop cum bar and music place at the shepherd's patch swing bridge. Opens late Friday.
C. G.
Stopped here after walking the canal path and feeling particularly hungry! I ordered the 'black shed filler' which is essentially large English breakfast with fresh extra thick bread.
There was a bit of a wait on the food and it wasn't obvious where the cutlery was, but otherwise it was fine (though the wrapped butter was put on the toast and had already melted). The breakfast itself was decent - good quality sausage and bacon, plus a generous portion of black pudding. Certainly did the job of filling me!
K. S.
Lovely waterside location by Gloucester- Sharpness canal - good selection of cakes, and hot and cold food.
Also, cracking little activity centre at the back, rents out canoes and bikes, plus sells some basic bike-shop bits.
D. C.
Lovely. Clean great service great food reasonably priced friendly staff
S. R.
Lovely atmosphere found it whilst cycling by on our Lands End to John O'Groats journey on our tandem. Would have loved to have stayed to drink coffee and listen to chilled live music, but we have deadlines to meet!
R. P.
Food was ok not great might be because the kitchen closed 15 minutes after we arrived, service was let's say untrained
I. R.
What a great surprise! Despite being busy we had 4 lovely meals. Good quality and quantity. Staff all very good.✌My roast with vegi sausages was really lovely.
M. b.
Had breakfast, not the hottest breakfast I've had and didn't think it was good value for money considering what was on the plate against what it cost in my opinion expensive.
S. N.
Excellent breakfast and lovely to be by canal, stopped en route to Slimbridge
s. s.
Nice little place 4 a quick snack
Was nice watching the boats as we sat by the river
J. D.
Visited the black Shed very warm welcome friendly staff, lovely huge portions of food very reasonable prices.Very convenient for our stay at Tudor park camp sites just a minute walk away. Thank you Kim and sorry can't remember the other young lady that served us very friendly and helpful.Would highly recommend a visit 😀 Thank you .
K. C.
Moored on the Canal and promised ourselves a full breakfast on our way back towards Gloucester. We were really impressed with the service and the brekkie was amazing. Our plate was full and so tasty. Thoroughly recommend 👌
D. C.
It was a busy morning when I visited, I had the full English breakfast and coffee, there was a bit of a wait for the food to be served but worth the wait, really good food and nice coffee.
R. B.
Nice strong coffee from vending machine 😂. Very popular place. Had a band about to start up as we left. Nice cheesy chips 👌 bottled beers. Great to sit and watch the swing bridge open to let canal traffic through. Great entertainment.
S. D.
Great cafe and bar. Well worth visiting!
M. M.
Great and polite service..plenty of seating, food was ready quickly and was fantastic.
P. &. J. J.
Fantastic place to have a snack whilst watching boats on the canal. Dog friendly too.
B. J.
Wonderful atmosphere, we were there because my Son was using a Christmas present on the paddle board. The group were amazing. We also bought a stone dragon for the garden (called Bryn) very pleased with whole experience will definitely call again. X
L. N.
Lovely setting ,
Ladies kind and friendly to us.
Food was really quick and they even catered for the dog
S. N.
Nice position, lovely place, just needs to up their game a little and pay attention to details.
A little pricey for what you get.
Forgetting the bread with a plough mans and not coring the apple properly when sliced.
Not clearing the table of previous customers meals until we had finished ours.
Service a little all over the place and inexperienced. Potential to be very good venue.
M. B.
Nice and friendly and a nice spot but the food isn't worth the prices. Our chicken was over cooked. Mum ate hers but I couldn't eat mine (which they replaced), so were my onion rings (one was actually burnt) and each time thus was hidden by putting each food item best side up. The fish fingers on the childrens meal were actually star fish cakes. And there was moire food on the children's meal than on the adult basket meal. Don't think we will visit again unless we pop on for cake which looked nice and the sliced cakes were reasonably priced!
M. W.
Lovely place, beautiful view, very nice atmosphere.
M.
Lovely sunny day ... sat outside on decking watching the canal gently flow by, some people bravely standing on boards and paddling along, a few boats patiently waiting for bridge to open to allow them to continue up stream...quite idyllic drinking our nice hot coffee and treating ourselves to some very nice cake too..Perfect Sunday
R. “. T.
Great food and drinks adjacent to the canal
C. L.
5 stars 🌟 can't really say much more than that.
A. O.
Delicious cooked breakfast and a very friendly welcome this morning prepared us well for a sunny walk along the canal. Visited on a whim having not been before and will return. The cakes looked amazing but sadly we didn't have one.
t. r.
we use this cafe/bar (great pint of Thatchers) on a regular basis in summer, we have a boat on the Canal. but more than often access it by road..as its only a few bridges from our mooring..Lots going on in summer, friendly staff and great prices ..nothing finer on a summers day,,barring covid restrictions that is..recommended, but its very popular in summer
M. W.
Another lovely lunch. Good choice, good prices, lovely tasty hot food. Staff are all very friendly too. We'll be back!
G. G.
Excellent cafe with great food and staff. This place is ideal for visiting whilst at the Tudor Caravan site or whilst walking the canal. We have been coming here for years and will use again
C. H.
Excellent arrived in a large walking group. Service really good. Food tasty and quality really good. Would recommend clean and friendly
A. S.
Great place as long as you don't want cordon bleu... 😁 Great for a snack and a beer, lovely position.
C. F.
Staff couldn't be more helpful. Reasonable prices for really tasty meals. All in a lovely setting. Will certainly visit again
P. E.
Lovely café with extremely friendly staff. Right on the canal with a small shop selling local made gifts and curios.
J. C.
Lovely full English Bfast. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating, right next to canal, tables well spaced out. All the usual covid measures in place. If parking in car park, don't forget to register number plate when you order in the cafe. They are open every day now so ignore what it says on Google Maps.
T. M.
Thank you all! Even the dogs were welcome 🐾🐾🐾
M. P.
Found this place purely by accident, we were actually looking for the Tudor Arms just across the road. Wonderful canal-side setting with an interesting seeing bridge, fantastic sandwiches & friendly staff. Just the job for a leisurely lunch watching the boats go by with a coffee or a beer. It's a former munitions hut and is now a listed building (according to the helpful Canals and Rivers Trust volunteer). Thoroughly recommended.
C. B.
We have been using the black shed cafe for over 20 years and have known when they did Chandlery. The current owners have vastly improved the whole place. Lovely breakfasts good friendly staff with excellent toilet facilities. Very often they will have a theme night and bingo on Wednesday evenings. Very popular with the boating community and the adjacent Tudor caravan park. With Slimbridge wildlife centre just down the road and cycle hire narrowboat hire on site and paddle boarding on the adjacent Gloucester Sharpness. It's a must for all ages.. Well recommended.
D. C.
Only popped in for a couple of tea whilst passing through. However glancing at the menu there was a good variety for everyone's taste. A lovely selection of cake to accompany a pot of tea. Free parking. Also a well stocked shop at rear.
S. b.
Really nice place right by the canal, stunning location did not eat there so cannot comment on the food but from what we saw it looked pretty good
D. C.
Lovely find. Fab food.. staff so accommodating. Lovely place will come again
S. R.
Great place to stop off for breakfast when you do a day trip on the canal. You can drive or walk here too so would be a good place to sit and watch the various river activities .
I. A.
Beautiful location on the Canal. Staff very friendly and helpful. Absolutely god awful coffee though from some sort of vending machine!
R. B.
Good little cafe if you want a walk by the canal
J. H.
The Black Shed has recently reopened and has been refurbished. They have a cafe and shop and also a bar, they also seel diesel for boaters. You can sit outside and enjoy a drink by the canal. Food is served but check hours. A pizza boat also moors by the building and sells pizzas but again check which days. They serve very nice cakes too. This is a friendly place and is great for boaters and general visitors.
j. t.
The food and service are Awsome all Covid measures in place and lovely to sit eating your food by the canal love this place and dogs welcome too . Lovely inside too have eaten here many times very pleasant place to be .
S. H.
Very nice food.My friend Gluten intolerance so very helpful in providing her with something to eat. Will go again
M. P.
'Only ' 4 stars because I haven't eaten here yet, but its a lovely atmosphere in a great setting. Perfect for summer lunches and evenings.
Drive, bike, or walk there. Free parking for customers.
Regular Summer music and other entertainment, more Winter entertainment in the pipeline... Stay tuned.
M. B.
This is a great place to stop for a coffee to go whilst walking the canal, it costs a fiver for two coffees which is a little steep but they are pretty good & it's the convenience factor that makes it worthwhile. However, we visited again today for the 4th time & it was rather chaotic in there (again) we normally have to wait between 5-10 mins to get served but today it was more like 15 mins & there were only 3 people in front of us, they have 1 server which takes the orders then makes the drinks from that order before serving the next customer! There are about 3/4 other workers either in the kitchen or serving food or clearing table's, they need a better system where the server on the tills takes the orders full stop, then someone else makes the drinks, this would reduce the wait time massively, it wasn't hugely busy today & there were members of staff that I personally think could of made the drinks while the orders were coming in & being sent to the kitchen. I work in retail & I fully understand the lack of hours & a huge workload but..... the key is in the organisation, it makes a huge difference if there is a plan in place, it may put people off who are just wanting a quick drink if that wait time continues, the staff are all lovely in there & friendly etc but i can never work out who's in charge? I will return as it's a very convenient pit stop I just wish the wait time wasn't as long.
P. K.
Great cafe. Very welcome after cycling from Chepstow.
T. T.
Perfect little place for a break when on the water. Lovely food and staff are very friendly. I've become a regular 😊
J. R.
Usually very good. Yesterday a bit hap hazard. Waited 35 minutes for drinks. Finished our food long before the drinks arrived.
M. W.
Only went in for coffee goid service will go again .
t. r.
Fab little place.staff so friendly and welcoming, esp to our dog! Great home cooked food and cakes. Lovely location. Great open mic eve and band nights.
J. B.
Lots of tables inside and out. Spacious except for parking. Best strategy is to park in the vast and free Slimbridge Wetlands Park car park and walk the pleasant third of a mile towards the canal bridge.
No skimping on portions. My lemon sole goujons were lovely. Served in a basket with a heap of batter-coated chips. The sort of food you need to fuel a hike.
S.
Definitely a great view to enjoy a drink. Didn't try the food but cakes looked nice! And they rent boats for a day or 3 day trips, took a leaflet home!
S. G.
Lovely location, great food and friendly staff 😊
G. G.
Good coffee and cakes, great position right on the edge of the canal.
Service was slow, I guess because it was a sunny day and lots of customers, but staff are friendly.
A. G.
Lovely location by the side of Gloucester to Sharpness canel on the way to Slimbridge Wildlife Centre. Good choice of drinks, ice creams, cakes and some cooked meals. During normal times live music at the weekends. At the moment operating sensibly under COVID-19 restrictions.
M. M.
Wow..just had a ploughman's lunch here with the wife... for the price it was exceptional a must if you can ...plus all in great surroundings
J. S.
Great atmosphere, views and prices!
N. D.
Lovely place can't wait to go and try the fish and chips on a Friday
K. C.
Great food and service. I’m from the USA, The Black Shed is a must when I come over. See you again next year.
N. R.
Great welcome, from the team. Reasonable coffee and great looking food
s. s.
Just shared a ploughmans lunch and a cream tea after walking our dogs by the canal. Its not the first time and it wont be the last. The food is good, as is the service. The scones melt in your mouth.
M. N.
Great location but needs a proper espresso machine
m. h.
We popped in on our way home from spending the day at Slimbridge WWT (30/8/18). As a customer you get free parking as long as you register your number plate with the reception desk.
Hubby had a couple of pints of the draught Ale and as I was the driver I had a cuppa or two! We sat along side the river watching the swans and birds around us.
It's a really nice cafe with lovely staff and friendly locals.
Next time we're in the area we'll definitely pop in again. Thank you
A. R.
Nice food and coffee. Great idea to gave the outside marquee on the side. Enjoyed the view.
T. P.
Great place, an all-in-1 pub-cafe-shop next to the peaceful Gloucester & Sharpness canal.
P. D.
Second visit here, nice little pitstop when walking or cycling the canal. Got a good system in place to cope with the Covid 19 requirements. The chips are awesome!😁

W. M.
Basic tables and chairs, friendly staff, large TV screen, dogs welcome but unfortunately no food if you are vegan. Good range of fruit teas to choose from.
T. G.
The customer service here is awesome and as such I left a very hefty tip. The staff are all lovely and they deserve recognition for the hard work the put in.
A.
Very welcome sight during our hot walk along the canal towpath. Too hot inside cafe, but plenty of tables outside, both in and out of the shade. A little expensive, but no choice.
J.
Great place for boaters, walkers... all. We fell upon this place on a day when they had 1940s revival. BLT cheesie chips, ice creams draught lager. Diesel for the boat! All good!
M. S.
Great cafe, foodie place, on the canal side.
Still awesome, good prices and a perfect day go visit today. Blue skies.
L. M.
Absolutely amazing, on the bank of the canal with a shop selling local canal crafts and cakes.
R. W.
Did not go in cafe today but it is always nice food and friendly people. A welcome stop half way through a bike ride. And nice to talk to the boat people.
S. F.
Lovely breakfast, excellent service...especially as there were 11 hungry cyclists!
D. m.
Great views, tea coffee cake etc.
Just a little worried about cleanliness a
s tables are not cleaned and often have debris from previous customers.
K. V.
Newly refurbished and relaunched bar, cafe & shop. Boat trips and bicycle hire available. Also, hand made, wood fired pizza from the Roving Stone pizza boat. Well worth a visit.
