Reviews of The Stables Cafe
T. G.
Always love a walk along the canal, especially on a bright sunny afternoon, and to pop into The Stables for a hot coffee or tea accompanied by a piece of cake. The banana 🍌 crumble cake is especially good. Always very clean and the staff are very pleasant.
It's also very popular and busy, so pick your times carefully. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you visit. We've always enjoyed our visits.
It's also dog friendly with bowls and the almost obligatory dog friendly ice cream. Our pooch certainly enjoyed hers and at £2.10 (Feb 2022) it's not going to break the bank either.
Returned at the beginning of December 2022 on a chilly and wet afternoon, with our pooch. It was nice & warm when we walked in. The tables on the ground floor were taken so we made our way upstairs with our pooch energetically leading the way. My wife ordered our drinks, some fries and a sandwich then joined us at the comfy seating by the patios and the outside decking.
Our food arrived promptly, only to be told dogs weren't allowed inside. This was really disappointing, our dog had clearly been seen when we arrived, so to be told when our food arrived that dogs were allowed outside only was very disappointing. It was cold and rain intermittent, so reluctantly we sat outside.
Dogs are welcome outside apparently but not inside which is really disappointing. Having travelled around Spain, France and Italy for nearly 3 months earlier this year with our pooch, not one restaurant, bar or pizzeria saying that she wasn't welcome, inside or out, it was really disappointing & quite surprising.
S. G.
Friendly staff, good range of quality food & lovely setting. Rather annoying you have to pay to park given it’s in the middle of nowhere.
F. C.
friendly staff good beers nice view and relaxing...
...my favorite spot
A. S.
Excellent views of the canal to watch the boats passing. Service was good along with the food. A little bit of a wait to order as it's very busy and had to queue but does not detract from overall service. We'll worth the visit.
T. J.
Only one person serving with 3 other staff not really doing much. The queue was 9 people deep with others turning around and leaving - so more potential customers actually left than were served!!
And I thought businesses wanted all the trade they could receive.
Also some of the ice creams looked like they had melted and been re-frozen
Not somewhere I've got time and good health to waste my time in the future!!
Surely the owner of this business should be watching what's happening (or not) to get repeat custom (there were loyalty cards on the counter but it looked like no customer had picked any up.
J. W.
Really lovely breakfast with great coffee.
S. F.
Just such a lovely spot for a great breakfast or lunch, right next to the canal.
Great food. Efficient, friendly, quick and just a nice place to be.
Great as the start or end point of a canal walk.
O. T.
Staff are lovely, remembered my partner's grandmother's food order even by the type of bread.
Lovely views of the river and can see some pretty boats.
N. R.
First time visiting Saul Junction and this lovely cafe. Staff are friendly and polite. Good variety of food available and plenty of seating area inside and out. My only small negative comment was the table we sat at had been cleared but not wiped over so was sticky.apart from that it was very good.
C. P.
Came across this cafe by chance while out for a lovely walk along the canal path. What a little gem!! I didn't think a coffee and toast could taste so good. I had a cappuccino with two slices of brown toast (not your normal sliced bread) thick cut and beautifully toasted.
t. b.
Would really recommend this place as the food is very good. Visited on Saturday and the staff couldn't do enough for me and my partner. Well done to all the staff. Price was very reasonable.
T.
Service and food were great, beautiful views of the canal and canal boats, ideal for a Sunday morning coffee and light lunch.
P. S.
Quick service despite bank holiday. Quality sandwich and great coffee. Will be back. A delight to sit and watch the boats in the sunshine.. Thanks
A. L.
Lovely cafe by the canal. Gets busy so be prepared to wait but its worth it. Loads of seating too and dog friendly
V. T.
Lovely setting. Good food. Great place to stop off on walks. Seating inside and out.
T. P.
Delicious lunch with friends, I would highly recommend the Welsh Rarebit..deliciou. The dog enjoyed it too as he had a doggie ice cream 😋
L. D.
Popped in for lunch. The kids food couldn't really fault, toasties were good and easy choice, but the chicken was some sort of pulled shredded chicken whxih was either re heated or straight from a packet. Coffee/latte was also average mor elite instant with bit of foam on top.. Maybe next time will get one of the special salads or something and a tea
D. S.
Great food ! Good sized portions, friendly staff and wonderful setting by the canal.
N. C.
Handy for a walk along the canal. It will be even more popular when Saul junction opens for traffic up the canal to Stroud.
K. B.
It's in a perfect location, has great views of the surrounding area and canal, and serves great food. Personally, the rarebit is the best I've had.
N. T.
A very busy cafe with some items on the menu sold out. However what we did have was much improved by a bowl of free chips as they had been omitted from the order. Job well done thankyou.
S. P.
We had friends staying so we visited the stables for morning coffee and a walk along canal afterwards with ruby the dog
C. M.
Excellent bacon brie and cranbury sandwich, chips and a latte in a cold day.
A. L.
Lovely place but if you're open until 4.30 serve food until 4.30. Otherwise people come in and are dissapointed, and then leave.
G. J.
Lovely spot overlooking canal and boats. Yummy food and excellent service with a smile even when they v busy.
j.
It's a great place, but it doesn't seem to be run very efficiently.
Always a queue of 20 minutes 😕
I. J.
Despite all the bad reviews Naomi, the staff did you proud. Hannah was very welcoming and friendly and one of our group has an aversion to garlic so they checked the ingredients of 3 items to make sure. Very helpful. All food was good, the chutney and beef stew are worth an extra special mention. Lots of seating on 2 floors although you do have to pay for parking £2.50 for 4 hours. Position is excellent near Saul Junction on the canal network and beautiful houses in Frampton on Severn. Plenty of walks available.
L.
Beautiful walk along the river, nice people and peaceful place
G. S.
Great coffee and fantastic cakes, would enjoy another cake anytime 👍
P. P.
Good ambiance, pleasently situation good range of refreshments.Long slow queue to get served
R. P.
Popped in for a snack lunch when we went for a walk along the canal. Was a bit expensive we felt, but food OK.
M. L.
Stopped here for a cup of tea and some cake. I can highly recommend the coffee and walnut cake and the flapjacks. Very busy little cafe, there was a bit of a wait out in the sunshine whilst waiting to be served. An excellent choice of meals as well as cakes. I'm going to enjoy the vegetarian breakfast on my next visit.
P. F.
Lovely place next to the Gloucester canal. Great food. Very well worth a visit.
D. L.
Great little cafe with amazing cake collection for hungry travellers.
s. s.
Nice stopping off point. Just had coffees so can't comment on food, but if you're going up the canal or cycling past, fine for the stop and outside seating 👍.
D. J.
Cosy, plenty more tables upstairs as well as outside and on the balcony. Decent food, snacks and pub type lunches. Menu could be clearer - just a chalk board on the wall in small writing part hidden by folk sitting in front! Friendly prompt service even when busy though.
A. G.
Good place for a cup of tea of coffee. Excellent cakes, friendly and helpful staff. In door and outdoor covered seating. Right next to a canal too. Lovely place to begin or finish an afternoon walk
C. P.
Nice place, friendly staff....Nice selection of cakes!! Coffee machine not working so instant
R. H.
Been here many times after long bike rides and walks. Lovely setting. Food is really good and the staff very polite and helpful. Had a full brekky with my daughter here this morning and it was purfect. Even my daughter ate all her food and that's pretty rare. Highly recommended.
J.
The Stables Café has a terrace upstairs and lots of indoor and outdoor seating areas.
It gets it's name from what it used to be...... "the horse stables" for the horses that pulled/towed the canal boats/vessels up and down the canal..
There are beautiful views of the canal and surrounding pretty idyllic Saul junction area.
Lots of boats, all sorts.....canal boats, cruisers, yachts and even a pirate boat...
Being such a beautiful day, an ice cream was a must!
We decided on a Chocolate Banana and a Mango in cones and they were delicious..
We got a slice of Lardy cake and Millionaire's shortbread to take back to our canal boat for coffee and cake later on..
The staff were welcoming and friendly and we'll probably be back for maybe a spot of breakfast or lunch!
S. V.
Had nice lunch, Tuna melt sandwich did order white but got granary which not keen on ,but nice bread, so didn't complain. Nice to sit out by canal and watch the boats
G. B.
Lovely location overlooking the Gloucester Sharpness canal. Nice food, nice venue. Can get busy at peak times.
s. e.
Been twice now very nice and friendly. Lovely food had Fried eggs on toast, and a lemon curd shortbread. Most enjoyable.
Z. W.
Lovely little place great service I would highly recommend.
Just be aware you have to pay for parking
D. D.
Excellent food, friendly staff, lovely location!
R. W.
Couldn't believe the size of the sandwich, it was huge and delicious. Great little place for a snack with beautiful views of the canal. There is an Upper deck which has tables outside and an internal room with settees along with tables and chairs. There is always a wait for food so sit back, relax and enjoy the views. Great friendly service from all the staff. Parking £2 for 4 hours.
M. W.
Lovely setting along the canal, but you mustn't be in a rush to get your food! The food was great, but the service was very slow. Great place if you have spare time on your hands.
K. B.
Not the cafes fault but the farm next door smelled incredibly bad and made me feel sick. The brownies we bought were dry and we didn't even finish them, coffees were quite nice though. Prices were high, £4 for a couple of scoops of ice cream
T. J.
The smell from the geese in the field behind the cafe was very off-putting so I'd recommend sitting inside. The breakfast was nicely cooked and the staff pleasant but I don't understand why the gluten free version didn't include either sausage or toast when they are so freely available.
C. C.
Food incredible, very nice little spot near the channel. We went twice because of the food 🤤🤤 Dog friendly 😉
I put 4 stars instead of 5, because there was a miserable lady preparing the coffees in the little ice-cream house in the yard and I don't like this kind of rude treat to the costumers, makes me feel uncomfortable.
G. H.
Well, the coffee may have once flown over a coffee bean perhaps, but still, nice location
J. P.
Stopped here for a drink, after walking from Frampton on Severn. Decided to have a snack lunch, filled rolls with salad garnish. Rolls were fresh, well filled and tasty. Staff were pleasant and friendly. Well spaced seating outside. Will definitely be back!
A. T.
Great location and building, cakes are generally good (unless you get a stale slice from the day before). Pretty expensive for what you get though, and coffee is very poor - black americano bitter, and a “flat white” just a coffee with milk!
P. C.
Walked from Frampton to The Stables Cafe, had a hot chocolate with a bacon sandwich, which was very nice. Felt sorry for the Staff member at the till taking all the orders, unfortunately a member of Staff was off ill. But she did a great job, plus all the other Staff members, worked hard & were friendly & helpful.
M. O.
Really like the place. Had an iced latte (really hot day) Wide selection of cakes, and some proper meals, all looked good. Check out the upstairs for some comfy sofas and balcony overlooking the canal. Garden area is good size too. Well worth checking out and making part of a canal side stroll. Independent and quality. Will give it a 5!
J. I.
Fantastic little cafe on the waterside by the canals near to Frampton. Found this place by accident but so pleased we did - the staff are friendly and the environment is simple but the food is great and the surroundings are lovely. Look out for the gorgeous cakes! You can stop either before or after your walk along the canals which is ideal. Be aware the car park outside is a pay and display although when we went the machine was out of order and apparently had been for some time. Bonus. Overall, lovely place to stop on a sunny day out in the country!
M. B.
Recommended to us by a local Farmer. We cycled there and the food and service were great. Lovely location. Very popular. Plenty of areas to prop up your bikes against fences. Would definitely return - wished we'd had brunch there!
C. M.
Nice range of drinks, food, cakes and ice cream available. Service is quite slow and the person handling food is also handling money with same gloves etc and not changing between customers or anything so not very sanitary. There are lots of tables to sit outside. A great location for walks along the canal.
K. H.
Good enough to eat, a little pricey, but lots of ingredients, the bottle of beer was a bonus
A. E.
Such a lovely walk along the canal. Even in less than pleasant weather, with irritating restrictions meaning we couldn't go inside, The Stables Cafe offered somewhere dry to sit with a hot coffee. You can get hot food too!
J. G.
Nice coffee bit of a wait but not tò long
m. u.
Still a limited menu as of Covid. But lovely freshly cooked food. Had Chicken and bacon sandwiches with salad and a nice dressing. Really popular place come rain or shine.
D. C.
Canal-side location is pretty and rooftop dining enhances the experience. Breakfasts are yummy!!
D. S.
Very nice, location with a great garden. Food was very nice and well preppared. A gluten free breakfast is provided and all there are a limited amount of items its definetly worth going for. Really friendly helpfull staff. Will definetly visit again.
F. H.
Dining inside and out, upstairs and down, food brought fresh to the table. Simple menu, but good selection. Ham egg and chips had real tasty ham. Lots of alternative in the line of drinks. Walked 4 miles to get there and thoroughly enjoyed it.
T. P.
Great location, friendly service and amazing food. Sad that people are trying their hardest to criticize this café as it's one of the best in Gloucestershire.
L. H.
Nice coffees and tasty cakes. Shame the queue was long. Also shame that stop breakfast at 11.30 but don't start lunch until 12.00. would still go again but not at that time.
T. A.
Good location at Saul Junction with many walks and view of canal boats. Good variety of hot food and cakes. Muddy boots must be left outside.
J. B.
Very popular place to est and drink. Great selection of hot and cold meals. Prices are a little more than average but service very good and quick.
M. P.
Popped in for breakfast with the wife today and enjoyed the super view of the canal toward the marina from the new decked area.
Lovely freshly cooked food and friendly staff.
I. E.
Lovely little cafe right alongside the canal. There is a car park right at the side and a larger one further along. The food was beautiful and the service was excellent, friendly and quick. We'll recommended.
S. P.
Brilliant views, homemade cakes and even a beer if you wish. Friendly staff too
E. J.
Lovely little place by the canal. If it's sunny, sit outside by the canal, it's very scenic. Stopped off during a cycle ride, lots of space to put my bike. It has a very local feeling to it, having chickens brush past my legs whilst enjoying a cappuccino!
G. S.
Have been there on several occasions and have one gripe and that is how they make cappuccino. Mostly end up with what I would call a Latte without any sign of frothy milk . Can someone please check how the staff make a cappuccino as it spoils the enjoyment using the facility.
W. S.
Had a lovely lunch sat outside in the sun. Great location, great choice of food. Wasn't too busy so we were served quickly. Will definitely be visiting again.
C. E.
Very friendly and efficient staff nice atmosphere and scenery great food
J. H.
Beautiful location and very friendly atmosphere
D. H.
Enjoyed a great breakfast, good price, excellent quality quickly served this morning whilst walking the Severn. Car park next door. Impressed with their Covid precautions and would recommend.
Thanks
R. S.
Fabulous homemade cakes...the peanut butter slice is a favourite. Lovely staff. Parking is expensive for a quick visit and is not controlled by the café. The signs offering cheaper parking for those the café weren't in evidence on the day I went.
A.
Lovely spot for a relaxing drink. Currently having a renovation, but normally a fab spot. Have to pay for parking as canal-side, but beautiful and calming.
J. M.
Lovely location. Good selection of hot and cold drinks, cakes and food. If you turn up as part of a large group of people be prepared for a long wait. The time between individual customer service is quite slow.
K. D.
Brilliantly placed on the canal side, with a open air second storey eating area this makes a marvelous spot to take a breather after a long walk. There's a good selection of food and drinks and a small enclosed area for young kids. I use this cafe quite often when cycling in the area, always several other cyclist making use as well.
r. D.
A little diamond of a place, basically a cut cafe, situated on towpath. Very popular, well worth a visit, a short stroll up the towpath takes you to a canal trust place, sells books, odds and sods, get a coffee and cake and a chat with folks who run it. Lovely place again. In a warm sunny day there's nowt better.
D. H.
Good place for coffee, lunch or afternoon tea and cake. Sit near the canal. Dog friendly garden with bench seats. Toilets open. Easy to park
S. D.
very nice views, kind and friendly staff.
sadly, the coronation chicken sandwich was a bit dry, and the side salad even dryer.
A. S.
Fabulous breakfast a real treat thoroughly enjoyed the visit on tuesday for my mums 90th birthday
Thankyou to all the lovely staff
k. b.
Reasonably priced! , pleasant staff but the sausages were well over cooked !
N. I.
Nice friendly atmosphere. Good food. Along side of the canal near Saul marina. Would be lovely to walk on a sunny day but for us it rained. Cafe made up for this though.
N. C.
Great cafe, but can struggle of suddenly inundated with lots of people all ordering food at the same time!
Full breakfast is really good.
M.
Very nice place to walk the dog and relax at the cafe with coffee and cake they do breakfast and lunch aswell, good food cooked well.
r. b.
Great location and good food but could do so much better, keep kitchen open all day, potential goldmine...
G. W.
A very nice little out of the way cafe by the side of the canal near to Frampton on severn, usual cafe selection of food at reasonable prices.
s.
Great coffee and quick service. Nice place for a break during a day of walking. Hot food available too as well as the much needed cake.. 😁
A. S.
Always a nice spot for a friendly lunch while watching the boats and visiting the canal junction and marina. Well organised covid precautions. Scrummy sandwiches!
R. A.
Good food, friendly people and quick service! A very lovely place with a nice view of the canal.
D. T.
The cabin is now open for drinks and cakes and there are plenty of tables. It's a nice stop on a pleasant walk around Saul Junction.
G. H.
Absolutely perfect spot for lunch or coffee and a cake. Nice inside but even better outside watching life sail past on the canal. Parking adjacent. Dog friendly.
B. G.
Currently the outside deck area seems to be being replaced. Outside facilities, plenty of bench tables and drinks etc and orders being taken from an outside cabin. Good food and service.
L. H.
Lovely view of the Canal/Boats. Dog and child friendly. (doggies outside)
Really nice food, especially the Home made Huge slices of Cake 🙄
M. T.
Had a lovely mug of tea and slice of cake. Little 1 enjoyed playing in the garden with the cars and the lady serving was great even letting him go and choose his fruit shoot from the fridge.
A. P.
Very good, outside seating, good choice of food. They are in the middle of some building work at the moment, but they are working round it well!
M. T. H. W.
We popped in for a coffee after a stroll down the canal, the cafe is right by the water, the staff were friendly and the place had a nice atmosphere, lots of seating inside and out too. We will definitely be returning.
N. H.
Friendly staff relaxed place great diet alternative choices
A. P.
Staying at a campsite in slimbridge, walked to the cafe for a breakfast, very good value for money, the young staff helpful and polite, lovely setting, would return.

J. V.
Great place after a walk along the River or Canal. Cakes, food etc are excellent.
T. A.
I haven't sampled the food yet but I have spent an hour or so with a cool drink on a hot sunny afternoon just watching the boats on the canal. Very friendly and welcoming !
D. W.
Nice cafe,. In rural area by the river. People are very friendly. Cafe was very busy. Staff were very nice. Service with a smile, even with their masks on.
s. p.
Very nice, lovely cakes !. Doggy ice cream went down very well with the pooch 👍
A. H.
Stopped while walking dog. Great food, comfy sofa, good view. 2019 update. Unfortunately no longer allows dogs inside hence downgraded review.

Nice cafe. Good cakes and friendly staff. Coffee nothing special, however.
M. L.
Always great, fresh cooked food. Staff are always friendly & helpful. Great location with access to the canal for walks or boat rides.
M. C.
Food was ok but took an hour to get 3 jacket potatoes and a sandwich when the cafe wasn't that busy
C. R.
Enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and scone, jam & cream in the sunshine.
A beautiful spot by the canal. A lovely way to while away an hour watching the world go by.

Good food, excellent service will visit again.

Friendly but they struggle if it's busy. Great cake but coffee is rushed, very weak and watery flat white.
K. M.
Good food and service. Great day out at Saul junction if the weather is good. Can get a canal boat trip just along from the cafe.
L. J.
Lovely cafe on the canal Bank.Delicous cakes and snacks at reasonable prices.Sit in or out .

Nice to to sit and have a drink but don't like park and pay just to have a drink?

Very friendly service and lovely hot chocolate. Only gave 4 stars as the dog water bowls were horrible..could do with new ones.

M. P.
Some beautiful cakes, plenty of seating inside and outdoors (with dog friendly areas).
M. b.
Great food, fast friendly service in a lovely location.
