Reviews of Alchemy Café - The City
T. W.
Excellent latte, delicious and gorgeous with a swan latte art. Super courteous, friendly and smiley staff. One feels very welcomed here! Thank you ❤️
S. S.
Excellent customer service and even better coffee. My flat white was perfectly extracted with spectacular milk. I was initially hesitant about the espresso ice cream, but it is ver pleasant to round out the pallet on a hot day.
A. S.
Enjoy coffee with Rainy view , they have collection of coffee beans for milk base & filter some accessories .. Recomended ✌🏻 (Pay card only)
O. K.
Best coffee in town and served with a smile. The cake and cookie selection is always super. My only advice is to switch from sugar to honey for the Anzac cookies, because the at rate I'm going through them, I expect to develop type 1 diabetes within weeks. Great job guys, you always start my mornings in the best way.
F. I.
Awesome spot to start your day.
We ordered a flat white coffee and a lemon cake.
S. Z.
Great coffee. Highly recommended.
M. U.
Probably the best coffee place in London. Havent been to all of them but know the taste of a good coffee. Costs around 4 pound a coffee. Strongly recommend the chicken sandwich.
C. W.
Alchemy is a great great coffee shop - amazing coffee, fantastic team and nice atmosphere. It not only operates a small number of cafes but also roasts its own coffees. One of the best in London!
H. A.
Wonderful coffee to have. Loved the way it’s located - cute cafe around the corner of the block! Very exclusive and offers nice flavors of coffee :) a high recommendation from me !
D. S.
Excellent artesian coffee bar, tucked away in the alleys between Blackfriars and City Thameslink (Ludgate Hill exit).
Small interior with limited seating but the coffee is sublime - strong, perfectly roasted and smooth.
Friendly staff - definitely worth going out of your way to find!
M. C.
Great selection of cakes and the banana cake was especially yummy. Coffee, needless to say, was very good. They had special San Sebastián filters when I went and it was really good!
j. b.
Local go-to for a coterie of coffee craft cultists. A snuggle setting with well versed, articulate and efficient staff serving a range of beans, brews and techniques with purpose and panache.
Also a pastry/cake complement + cheese/meat boards at reasonable prices.
Attuned and adept and bean around here awhile.
v. s.
Very cute cafe with excellent coffee and nice espresso ice cream too.
M. I.
Delicious coffee with range of options - you want espresso-based? Got it. Manual brews? Opt between aeropress or v60. Some good-looking beans as well from Guatemala, Costa Rica. Slurp!
E. L.
Dedicated to coffee! It's semi-hidden in some back alleys near Blackfriars station and pub. There were two blends when I went. The alternative milk on offer was oat, which is always good.
B. O. S.
Great coffee, cool spot and friendly staff!
J. L.
Excellent service. Many thanks for helping with choosing great beans and serving an amazing Brazilian beans pourover!
G. F.
Great coffee.great chat with the barista. Gave me great advice on a couple coffee related questions. Definitely coming back
L. R.
Great coffee and consistent. The baristas know their craft
p. t.
Great coffee and supper helpful staff. Popped in here with my little one in the pushchair. The staff were so friendly and helpful with my little one.
J.
Perfect proper coffee shop, hidden from the masses. 6 or so stools but great takeaway. Small selection of sweat treats, but a great non standard selection.
A. M.
Great coffee and impressed by the latte art ;)
U. G.
Very cool coffee shop with good coffee and great friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.
J. R.
Very good quality of coffee
I recommended all from V60
relaxing atmosphere
well done :)
K. S.
The best long espresso I had in London during my 10-day trip. Even my very French wife and her friend from France enjoyed their cups of espresso. Furthermore, we enjoyed a slice of the lemon bread available that day and we have just been wanting to return to this place since. Definitely worth s journey to this tiny coffee place. Not much seating but worth it.
A. S.
Great coffee shop that serves sweet and savoury pastries.
M. C.
Up there with the best flat white I’ve had.
Really great coffee and beans.
D. H.
One of the best coffee houses in London they know their coffee! 🤓
S. E.
Don't miss going to Alchemy - I absolutely adore their coffee. The food is delicious too, and staff are very friendly and charming. Alchemy roasts their own coffee, which is sold by mag and a nice little gift. If you are serious about coffee, I would highly recommend a visit!
T. D. T.
Attention to detail and passion from the Spanish barista make this place a must-go. Can I give 6 stars?
A. Y.
Small cosy coffee bar serving up great coffee. The go by oz here for espresso+milk drinks instead of drink styles. They had 2 espressos when we were there and both were lovely. Great range of cakes too. A little hidden but they had their own small crowd within :)
N. S.
I am a coffee/espresso snob, and the lattes my wife and I had here were some of the best I've had in Europe or in the US. The roast was a little lighter than what you find most places, so it was very smooth and had a slight natural sweetness. They roast their own coffee and they do a great job!
M. N. O.
The coffee served here is delicious. Makes you appreciate coffee. Yes it can come across dear, but it is worth it for you get great quality coffee. This is why there is always a crowd in there to get their coffee fix. Also a great place to have a quick meeting
K.
My new usual spot for premium coffee. It is premium not only for the posh beans they use, but the price also. I can understand the premium theme they are trying to achieve, and it is indeed good coffee, friendly staffs and good vibe to sit for 15 mins or so, but I wish they can be a little bit more reasonably priced.
H. L.
Don't miss going to Alchemy - it's close to my office, and I absolutely adore the coffee (particularly aeropress filter and cold-brew) that they make.
The food there, whilst a reasonably small selection, is delicious, and the people who work there are very friendly and fun to chat to.
Alchemy also roast their own coffee, which is really really good, and they sell the beans by the bag.
If you are serious about coffee, I would highly recommend going there if you get the chance - it's actually a lot better than many 'specialist' coffee shops, even if it isn't the best known.
M. S.
Nice tiny third wave café and roaster. Definitely worth a visit.
T. T.
Excellent coffee, friendly and warm environment, food options if you're hungry, delicious carrot cake...what more could you ask for? I was greeted with a beer and a bite of cake even before deciding which espresso beans I wanted! What a gem of a place.
B. L.
I highly recommend Alchemy. It is THE place to get yourself a really decent coffee in the local area and worth going out of your way for, even if you’re not that close. Staff are always friendly, super efficient and have vast coffee knowledge and experience. Also, really nice branding and love the hanging plants too.
Y. B.
Best coffee spot in the area, great baristas and always exciting selection of coffees from espresso, filter, aeropress or cold brew ... snacks also very decent and now opens in the evening (Thurs & Fri) if you fancy craft beers or organic wines!
H. S.
If you like a lot of choices when ordering a coffee and being asked 20 questions on how you want your macchiato, this is the perfect place for you. The coffee experience is far too serious and pretentious for my liking. You generally can choose 3-5 of different coffee by origin and they offer different brewing methods other than the classic coffee-machine, including aeropress, cafetier and cold-drip. Watch out though are we are on the pricey side of coffees.
B. M.
A great cafe shop associated with this coffee roaster. They sell their coffee beans in various sized bags (100g, 250g, and 1kg) making it easy to try a range of beans. The coffee is also excellent.
a. S.
Hip small place with great coffee and yum croissants
D. M.
The most amazing coffee I have had in London and one of the best I have had. Strong with lots of flavor, very friendly atmosphere and tasty treats. Will go back when I return to London.
B. B.
5 stars for the cold brew... Ten stars for the attractive and scruffy bearded barrista... Friendly too. My only complaint would be that they're purists... Want soy or cream or sugar or flavor or it-doesn't-matter-what in your coffee, they will only give it to you the way they make it. This is what Cartel Coffee in Arizona does, and they're famous enough in the United States to be featured in a national credit card commercial, but I disagree... We all have different palates, if I want my steak with sauce, or gin with tonic (which would have been illegal until not too long ago), or coffee with cream and sugar, so be it. Still, the coffee was great, the barista extremely handsome, so I'd come back again and again.
J. M.
A great little Artisan coffee shop. Coffee is the obsession, but their cakes and pastries are good as well. Seating is limited to chairs around the outside of the shop, which is ok for a group of 2/3 to chat. They offer various coffee bean varieties for your daily fix, but you wont find a three pint frapudappichino on offer - you will need Starbucks for that.
A. W. (.
Very small place with great coffee & pastry.
V.
Hidden place with amazing coffee, friendly barista and cozy atmosphere.
G. C.
Teeny tiny space hidden in an alley, just big enough for the bar and a 4-seat counter. But oh so worth the visit. Lovingly ground beans are coaxed into expressing their deepest secrets by wizardly baristas posessing arcane skills with an espresso machine. Sipping a cortado at Alchemy is a sacrament I will reserve for special occassions...or just whenever I find myself within a 10-block radius! It's that good.
R. P.
It's small but still manages to foster a nice atmosphere. Friendly Barista aren't to snobby to help you choose which bean is best, and the coffee is routinely excellent.
W. B.
Small shop, with limited bar and outside seating. Great in-house roasted coffee, and average London service. Cakes are good and it’s off-the-beaten path so ‘busy’ doesn’t mean chaos here. A local’s (business people) spot
A. V.
Currently my favourite City coffee shop (correct as at Aug 15'). Quality (own brand) beans, great set up and the filters (aero and v60) deserve a special mention
B. H.
Fantastic coffee place close to the St Paul!
C. h.
Good coffee, unfriendly staff, awkward atmosphere
M. M.
The best oat flat white (besides the one I make at home:-)) I've ever had. Perfect cup size, perfectly balanced flavour, perfect temperature.
N. G.
Amazing coffee, friendly staff. My first time at this cafe today and reallly enjoyed it. Good music too. Will be back again!
J. B.
Best coffee in London by a country mile. Staff can be a little prickly but that's probably because they are dealing with bankers all day. Worth enduring for the coffee!!
T. T.
Great espresso bar by people who know about and love their coffee. This is my daily go to coffee. Stop by if you're in the area.
M. H.
Best espresso for me {opus - acidity of mandarin , cocoa, almond}. Very good cold brew. You must try .
Y. Z.
Filtered coffee tasted good but it wasn't nearly hot enough. Pastry quality was the same as from chain stores, nothing artisanal about it.
S. B.
Delicious and one of the highest rated coffees going in London. Always try to taste the flavours before reading the tasting notes.
A. W.
Outstanding coffee and sweets!
J. A.
Best coffee around, and brilliant, friendly service! Helped me work out how to use my new espresso machine.
A. D.
Small and cost. Great place for an after work glass of wine or coffee. Good selection of meats and cheeses and also cakes and brownies. Would reccomend to anyone.
S. B. L.
My kind of coffee place - as well as picking up your breakfast together with that coffee! Some nice overnight oats and croissants, what could possibly go wrong?
J. J.
Best coffee so far. I really love this place and recommend it to everyone who is in London
S. M.
Very friendly staff. Very good hand crafted coffee. Flat white is stunning.
Shame it has very short opening hours.
J. W.
Coffee is usually decent. Staff are a mixed bunch... some are happy to make recommendations and have a chat, whilst others can be condescending.
F.
Full range of speciality coffee: usually two hand pour filter selections, two single origin espressos, and a cold brew. Also sell beans.
T. A.
Always good coffee and service. Coffee selection is always fun and they serve it really well. Very highly recommend
J. T. (.
Best iced coffee with oatly in London 👍
A. G.
Best coffee within a 5km radius! Great & passionate staff. Unique blends!
M. M.
They don't sell flat whites, just coffee. You want a six ounce coffee with milk. then look at the board, and lock the coffee bean you'd like.
J. H.
Great little local place for those who want a break from our tea. Great lattes. Hip vibe.
H. B.
Excellent coffee, they sell high quality freshly roasted beans too.
J.
Friendly, passionate staff and great coffee. It's a shame there are so few places to sit!
H. B.
Good quirky coffee place in the square mile. Usually has two different roasts of coffee on offer.
O. D. M.
Not too busy over lunch so perfect for a quick cuppa. Decent coffee and friendly staff.
T. K.
Great coffee, lovely staff and amazing atmosphere...
B. H.
Nice welcoming aura when I was there in the morning. Cool baristas, still warm croissant and aeropress for 3.50...well worth!
E. G.
Great coffee, great cakes. Very friendly and a good vibe in here.
A. T.
One of the best pulled espressos I've had in London in this tiny unassuming store.
J. A.
Top notch, very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great tasting coffee, can't fault it.
J. H.
A bit pricey but my gosh they know how to make their coffee. Try the 8 oz with oat milk!
E. K.
The coffee was pretty good, but it wasn't hot enough.. Staff weren't the friendliest though.
P. M.
This is a really really good coffee. Actually, it's the best coffee I've had in London
E. H.
The espresso ice cream is incredible.

A completely different level of coffee than your high street chain. Sarnies were tasty too.
G. S.
Speciality coffee. Amazing taste. Two versions of coffee to choose from. Quickly served.

I wouldn't normally leave a review but I'm a bit puzzled by the reviews below. Maybe I'm biased as a regular customer but I feel the need to jump to their defence. The staff, New and old, have always been lovely to me and a pleasure to talk to. They are incredibly knowledgeable about coffee if you engage them in a positive manner. What they do at this cafe is different to other cafes. At first it can seem over complicated but once you settle in its the best coffee experience you can have. Take your time to read the menu as there is a wide selection of beans and it's constantly rotating. It does get very busy and there can be a wait but they also serve a quick brew if you're in a rush. If not it's the best coffee in the area so it's well worth the wait.
P. M.

(Translated) Very small café with delicious sweet food. The pistachio cake is highly recommended. The cappuccino was very nicely prepared and had a full flavor. Less ideal in winter is that guests often don't close the door and it's cool and not very cozy. The service could be even more customer-oriented.
(Original)

(Translated) It is a small coffee shop that will give you a solid third wave coffee on the street corner. There was also a hand drip of Hario V60 in the menu. Because I was behind the hotel, I went for a cup of coffee in the morning to take out. From the early morning it may happen that the music of Norinori was applied at loud. It is nice place in London that there is such a nice cafe in a corner of the back street.
(Original)
