Reviews of Caffè Tropea
E. B. C.
Perfect spot for a working breakfast-coffee-turned-into-lunch! Good options of food to decent prices, and lovely staff. I'll be back :-)
N. S.
Good cafe with a lot of Italian options. Tried their full English and vegetarian breakfast which costs about 8 and 5 quid respectively and it was good. Toast costs an additional pound. We also tried garlic focaccia, which was nice, lemon torta and spinach pastry, which were okay. Service was quite fast on a weekday. The only issue was that toilet was not functioning.
O. L.
Great cafe adding an extra relaxing experience to the park. Plenty of table inside and outside.
S. S.
Good, reliable place in Russell Park. Food is predictably good, your usual Italian fare. The best part is you could go in any group size at any time of the day and you'll be seated with minimum waiting time, as they have plenty of outdoor and indoor tables available. Not having to worry about reservation is frankly, a relief.
Tip > ask for their daily special. That's usually the best thing on their menu.

Went for a morning coffee. It was a nice place in the midle of park! There always long queue as this is a very popular place.
D. M.
Wasn't expecting a full English breakfast as tasty as this place and to have a bit of greenery to look at outside and listen to the birds singing, absolutely fantastic food is not over priced for area and hospitality from the waiters and cook was great, I will be returning here in the future.
Keep it up people 🤗🤗🤗

I have been visiting this cafe/restaurant since 1983 and my experience has been and remains, a very friendly family business, where the staff give you such a warm welcome and always have time to chat and ask how you are on every visit. I thoroughly recommend this wonderful restaurant for any occasion be it for a short or long visit for a coffee/drink or meal.
J. C.
the best thing is the location. tables inside and outside in the garden, wow! delicious risotto
A.
Decent prices and excellently located in Russell Square. Good full English and vegan breakfasts but is truly Italian through and through. Sitting outside was nice for lunch with a view of the park and people walking by. Would recommend!
H. M.
Lovely family owned Italian cafe in the middle of Russell Square with a full food and drinks menu. I had the pasta of the day with homemade sauce and truffle oil, it’s delicious! Friendly staff and nice environment. They’re also one the best covid-safe restaurants I’ve been to in London!
G. H.
Great place a bacon roll and excellent coffee to set us up on a Sunday morning. Helpful staff and reasonable prices. What more could ask?

Stopped here for a drink after a long walk around London. Set in beautiful surroundings, the service was excellent and drinks refreshing although a little expensive (that's London prices though). Always good to find an Italian cafe that is used by Italians. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone, especially on a warm, sunny day.

I love this place, A hidden gem in the middle of a the capital. Its family run friendly and welcoming to all and most importantly dog friendly. Being places in one of London's park's used for many activities open to public use this cafe is wellplace offering indoor and outdoor seating.i would only change the closing time. As the park is opened late evening a missed opportunity to provide early evening dinners woud provide a lovely romantic setting for any evening events. 10/10 for service, food, and location. Being in the city surrounding traffic is about however not as noisy as you'd think. Or maybe the distraction of surrounding just helps you to forget it's there.. check it out for yourself. I Guarantee judge with a fair eye this is sure to become a favourite place to regularly visit. Loyal customers and local resident :D) xxx

The food was excellent. I had the seafood spaghetti which had plenty of shellfish - none over cooked or rubbery. I’m deducing a star for the service though. It wasn’t clear whether you are supposed to go to the counter to get food or wait to be seated at a table. I asked a waiter about this and he said he’d get me a table then left me stranded whilst he carried on bringing food. Another lady didn’t understand English enough to help me. After five minutes of standing around feeling out of place, I decided I was being ignored and it was best to go to the counter. I had to sit down at a dirty table which wasn’t cleared until my food arrived and not wiped down at all. Lots of shouting out food numbers. Why not give customers a table marker like other places do? I would had appreciated being offered some black pepper for my pasta too. The food quality definitely made up for everything else which is why I’d definitely visit again. Pricing was reasonable too. Coffee was excellent too.
A. B.
Great location for a weekend lunch, food is super tasty, good choice between hot and cold food.
B. R.
Coffee is excellent as you'd expect from an Italian family run café.
The pastries are to die for and breakfast is a feast and all the prices are very reasonable.
H. P.
Excellent food and incredible coffee. Really nice little place and very happy to have found it. As for the negative reviews about staff, there were some absolute knobheads customers when I was there. Seriously Londerners, relax and be nice.
A. B. (.
Loved the dessert and coffee was good, only giving 4/5 because I believe the dessert it’s pricy
M. R.
Absolutely amazing experience. In a small little park, this family owned little cafe is amazing. The staff are friendly whether this is your first time (which it was) or your 50th. The decor is gorgeous and the portion sizes are epic. They really know what they're doing. Really want to go back and try some of their amazing cakes they have on display. Truly a wonderful place would recommend immediately.
C. G.
We had an excellent lunch with good wine. On good days it is one of the best outdoor places to eat with a good view of the garden.
E. K.
Lovely setting. Simple food, well prepared and good value. Prompt service. More than worth the short walk from Euston if you find yourself with a bit of time to kill.
K. S.
This place was very busy when I visited, but I must say they dealt with it well. The staff behind the counter were very jolly, and very helpful throwing out suggestions on the best foods on offer. I eventually settled on just a cappuccino, and upon ordering it was made very quickly, and tasted very nice. I was expecting a hefty price tag, given the nice feel of the place and lovely location, but it was extremely good value for money (at least for me). Best of all though is the lovely view of the park, where you could spend hours people watching and watching the world go by.
S. W.
Nice location in the park with plenty of out door seating available (although not much under cover, so might be worth avoiding in the rain!) Inside area was closed when I went.
Only stopped for coffee, but the drink was good quality and excellently priced considering the cages location. Staff were efficient, and whilst not unfriendly didn't really leave a lasting impression.
J. T.
One of the best coffees I've had in a long time.
We had sausage and egg ciabatta
And bacon roll which was very nice
A. Z.
Good place for fresh air in park, serve also italian ice tea.
D. S.
Nice cafe in Russell Square with a view of the fountain.
Really nice service and pastries without a sharp price tag for a central London location.
A great place to meet people and lots of seating outside.
A. H.
Excellent little outlet set in the corner of the park.Provides a comfortable indoor seating area and when the weather is good pleasant outdoor seating. There is an adequate menu offering a selection of both English and Italian foods of a good quality, well presented in acceptable portions and value.Order at counter for table service all very efficient and friendly. The coffee is exceptional and far superior to the average high street outlet.
Highly recommended
P. T.
Lovely little family owned cafe. Very friendly. Can get busy at lunchtime but on a nice day you can take your food and enjoy it in the square.
M. j.
Excellent cafe in the heart of Russell Square. Fantastic food menu, small dog friendly too. Carry your dog to place your order. 😎
Have continued visiting every month and always receiving excellent service and high-quality food and drinks.
With C-19 around the cafe has excellent safeguarding measures in place, with full height counter screens, sanitiser stations, and table staff wearing masks.
Highly recommended!
k. A.
I recommend this place to anyone .First of all the location and the inside and outside looks beautiful.Secondly, the service is wonderful. And last but not least, the food id great i would recommend the cheese omelette with mushroom.
N. E. R.
A delightful spot in the middle of Russel Square, we stopped during a rainy afternoon had a proper baked “Torta della nonna” that had the exact flavour my granny use to bake me, delicious sfogliatelle and few mini-cannoli, also the coffee was really good! This lovely place has both delicious food and a quiet spot to enjoy a refreshing pit stop.
P. G.
Nice café in nice surroundings in the park. Food was good and quite fast, not too expensive and a lot of options.
S. C.
Italian cafe where the food has home made quality with a brush of the bistro. Tasty all day breakfasts and on point coffee. Situated in Russel sq gardens the location is green and full of harmony.
T. B.
It's in a fantastic setting with great food and service. The cutlery really let them down. Looks like it came out Billy Butlins skip.
S. D.
Visited twice, very good food each time and good value for money, especially considering the location. Staff nice and friendly, also very efficient. Looking forward to my next visit already.
J. J.
The Anglo-Italian breakfast was fantastic and a good recommendation. The pastries and desserts were all so great too.
I. G.
Had a hot chocolate and some mixed cannolis very nice. Seems to be a popular place with locals too as whilst there staff knew them by name. Also very friendly with passing trade
D. W. (. b.
Been here several times. Fun place. Good staff. Great atmosphere. Been lucky with weather and sat out side. Great place to people watch and eat good food.
M. G.
Lovely cafe and very friendly staff. Had breakfast here every morning during our stay in London. Will really miss it and will definitely go back when next in the area.
I. T.
Oh how this place should be a benchmark for cafes. Great location, great service, lovely coffee. If I got to the British museum this is where I go before hand. I love it.
J. C.
the best thing is the location. tables inside and outside in the garden, wow! delicious risotto
J. K.
This place is great, the foods scrumptious 😋, its hygienic and the staff is friendly and helpful! They particularly are kind to babies👶 perfect place to get a cuppa tea 🍵.
K. B.
Great little spot to enjoy the air and people watch in Russell Square. A little pricey compared to other spots in the area but this is to be expected given the convenient and relaxing location. I love to get a drink here and sit outside on a sunny day.
A. S.
Spent a lovely afternoon having lunch and then hanging with a beer and a glass of wine. The atmosphere is really nice as is the location in Russell square. The staff are good humoured and quick. The pain au chocolat are good and the almond croissant too. Pastry is soft and moist. They serve lots of really good Italian food, the focaccia with spinach is excellent. All the pasta dishes smelt amazing, looking forward to trying them. It is a great escape from the trendy cafes of Soho. Highly recommended!
J. C.
The location in the park is good enough that they could offer any old food at high prices and get away with it- instead there are delicious arancini, delicate cannoli, and great breakfast and lunch options.
J. C.
Bit hectic. Long queues, very loud inside and with the covid screens communicating an order is difficult. Lady behind the counter was constantly trying to upsell which was confusing. One change she suggested would've made me pay £11.60 instead of £6.50. Thought it was a bit cheeky.
Tables were often left with plates/food on which invited masses of pigeons.
Food was nice enough though which I guess is the important thing.
D. T.
More great sfogliatelle in London, with great coffee. Lunch menu looks reasonable. Typical family run Italian. Hopefully lunch next time
A. H.
Excellent service, wonderful English breakfast and really good prices. Also dog friendly!!! 100% recommend!
A. F.
This place has become quite a nice little cafe in a brilliant location. The same family has owned it for decades & they’ve recently redecorated & improved their menu. In some ways it’s a typical London cafe in an atypical location; this one is a perfect example of that typically London mix of British & Italian cafe/bar/coffee shop. It’s in Russell Square & there is ample outdoor seating, a rarity in London, and the inside is bright as 3 of 4 walls are made of glass. This is a lovely place to come for a quick bite, a coffee or a drink.
A. D.
A lovely authentic feel to this Spanish bar. Food drinks and sofy background music creating a taste of Spain. Service couldn't be faulted.
Y. L.
A tad on the expensive side if you're on a budget but it's worth it. Service is cheerful and fast and food and drink top quality! Deliziosa!
s. z.
Nice view of garden while sipping hot coffee. Vero professional and friendly staff
J. E. A. G.
Authentic, nice Italian food, good service and friendly staff.
J. T.
Absolutely brilliant, great food, great price, fantastico staff.
N. B.
Wonderful place and staff. Make this your go to place when in the area for delicious pastries, cakes and coffees
A. H.
Very pleasant place to stop off for an outdoor coffee on the way to kings X with our suitcases. Friendly staff. Good atmosphere.
R. A.
Perfect breakfast spot. People watching from our table in the sun between the trees kept us occupied while we had coffees and breakfast.
E. L.
Great place. Eggs and toast for £4. Simple and good. Great quantity. Nice park setting.
W. -. N.
Lovely Italian cafe in a complimentary setting in Russell Square. Warm welcome awaits customers here for either coffee and cake, a light bite or main meal. Paul and family along with the team ensure your experience in a good one. The food is piping hot, can recommend pizza and service is quick. Don't forget to try the chocolate cake it won't disappoint. The prices are superb considering you're in the capital shall be returning and look forward to it. Thanks Caffe Russell.

Quick heads-up before you go: first you order your food, hold onto your number, then order the drinks, then pay, and have a seat where you choose. When your food is ready they will call your number and you just have to signal them to bring it over to tour table.
I’ve had a lovely eggs benedict breakfast, perfect cappuccino and they even have freshly squeezed orange juice. Everything is full of flavour and there is very little waiting time, too.
The staff is quite friendly and you will definitely feel well treated.
N. D.
Stopped off for a fab lunch on our way to hotel, fab little place, we'll definitely be back.
A. M.
Very cozy place friendly staff. Only been there for coffee. I will come back for lunch.
J.
Popped in quickly for drinks. Nice hot chocolate and a pineapple juice. Only downside was the way the tables were cleaned. It was wiped down rushed and with the same cloth as any other table, didnt feel too clean.
Great outdoor area and staff were super friendly
G. P.
A very nicely placed Italian-style Caffè and restaurant in Russel Square.
Clean, late 70s early 80s Italian coffee style ambience, staff quick and polite enough, maybe slightly unexperienced but still OK.
No complaints about the coffee, which was proper. But the "mini sfogliatelle" were a fraud. At best, those you see in the picture are "Code di Aragosta", a completely different Italian pastry that does not have ricotta (as a proper sfogliatelle should). This was a letdown on a overall nice place.
C. H.
Nice cafe situated in the gardens of Russell Square. Serves breakfast and also appears to sell alcohol too!
S. G.
Fab risotto. Helpful staff. Busy but worth the wait.
J. B.
Food came very quickly. Loud inside, but due to happy conversation of other diners!
L. O.
Lovely place in russle square. I wanted to order a caprase salad but they had run out so they made me a fresh one, very accommodating with tasty food. Also had roibos tea which not many places have so very happy!
A. A.
One of my favourite places. Good food, friendly and cozy atmosphere. Very kind and polite and also professional staff. Makes you feel welcome. Besides you have the wonderful scenery of Russell Square Park. Strongly advise
A. G.
Read reviews before going to this place, all very positive. Was not disappointed when we arrived, great location looking at the park, sat outside and had breakfast, great choice of food on the menu including freshly baked pastries and treats, food come out in literally no time, friendly staff with a sense of humour! Definitely recommend 😎✋
J. B.
Stalwart Cafe in a prime part of london. Excellent prices too!
R. A. G.
You really cannot beat Caffè Tropea for the setting (nestled within the genteel yet bustling garden at the centre of Russell Square). Aside from being within this green oasis at the heart of Bloomsbury you have a choice of sitting inside and being spoilt by the views through floor-to-ceiling windows or enjoying the fresh air courtesy of their ample outdoor seating.
You're also greeted with a wide selection of foods (from the light to the substantial) and drinks (alcoholic or otherwise).
I remember visiting here as an undergraduate and the magic hasn't worn off over the past ten years or so. The service is still friendly and warm; the guests and customers seem as happy as ever.
Hope you enjoy your visit!
J. C.
Good, friendly and professional customer service and good selection of food
s. g.
Lovely very peacefull. Nice coffee
C. P.
Have been coming here for 15 years and absolutely love it! A warm welcome and a good selection of food and drink. Lovely staff. Can’t recommend highly enough.
J. K.
Lovely place. We stayed in the Kimpton opposite and ate croissant and coffee 3 days on the trot for breakfast. The staff are very friendly and the gardens are lovely to sit in
J. R.
A calming refuge in leafy Russell Square in central London. Great coffee and food, and friendly family running it. My daily coffee stop on my way to work, and often at lunchtime and later.
H. M.
My favorite place in London, for sure. It genuinely feels like being welcomed home. The Tropea family are always friendly, their coffee is amazing, and they are in the best spot; Russell Square Gardens are surprisingly peaceful and best enjoyed from Tropea. It's great for sitting outside and having a drink or something to eat when the weather allows, but sitting by the windows in the cold days and looking out is a really cozy alternative. I genuinely enjoy every visit.
P.S. Their Torta della Nonna is delicious.
J. S.
Absolutely amazing place. The staff are the friendliest ever - it’s family owned and celebrating 40 years of trading this week! I can’t wait to go back for food once lockdown ends. Their coffee and cannoli are wonderful. A real gem and excellent value
T. I.
Nice breakfast with great outdoor seating area. My peace was disturbed by the numerous pigeons however.
S. L.
Since I was here last they've really spruced up the place. Mostly the same cafe at heart but a nicer appearance and nicer panini.
w. h.
I have been going to Tropea since I arrived in London. Easily the best coffee I've had. Fast service, friendly staff, and a beautiful environment are only a few reasons I love this place.
T. A. L.
Great location with a view, their Anglo Italian breakfast is fantastic.
O. D.
Cafe Tropea bang in the middle of London, Russell Square Park a haven for weary travellers or locals wanting to hang out. This Cafe has been a life saver for me and many people during covid times, a friendly family run cafe with so much food to choose from, take away right now and in safer times a wonderful cafe to sit and take in the beautiful park.
s. a.
Great coffee and Italian cafe experience with a lovely view
E. T.
I visit every year when I have hospital appointment nearby. I always come to this place to have lunch, nice atmosphere and great food to prepare me for what's ahead. It never disappoints.
E. A.
Caffè Tropea is a gem, sitting quaintly on the edge of Russel Square. The outdoor seating offers a relaxing place to enjoy excellent coffee, whilst still feeling the energy of the park. The staff are wonderful and welcome you into their family right away. I strongly recommend to anyone in the area!
k. c.
Best latte and hot chocolate, very affordable, lovely location.
S. T.
Friendly helpful staff, great Italian food! Comfort food for a lunch or a little pastrie with a coffee.
Indoor and outdoor seating.
Surrounded by grass. A gem. 40 years old
R. L. (.
Great tasting coffee and fab customer service
T. D.
An Italian café, with a wide selection of cakes, pastries, drinks and ice-cream. nice surrounding of a little park too.
G. B.
If I could give it 10 stars I would. THE best cafe in London bar none!
C. H.
Lovely cafe in the square gardens a peaceful spot in the busyness of London
A. J.
My partner and I have been coming to this place for years and have found consistently good, the food and coffee, the people who run it; and not forgetting the view of the square, which is like a small park, in front of it. Central London is of course full of 'chains' of coffee houses and eateries. By contrast, the Tropea is family run, which can be a welcome change.
K. D.
Nice food , nice staff , and great place to lunch .
K. P.
Went to this restaurant everyday I was in London for breakfast/ lunch. Great service. Great prices and most importantly really great tasting food. Can’t wait to go back next time I visit London. I sincerely hope that they weather the COVID crisis and stay in business.
c.
This is one of central London's café culture highlights. Beautiful location, and a superb family business that is still going despite the coronavirus. Do them a favour - and yourself - and pay a visit. English favourites and Italian desserts and gelato. What's not to like?
L. L.
Perfect outdoor spot for a cup of coffee in the middle of a park in central London. Great escape into greenery. Lovely place to meet a friend, read a book or just escape fast paced London. Though do not recommend food.
B. N.
I love this place!
On my occasional visits to London (usually to the British Museum) I always make a point of stopping here. Excellent coffee (best in London in my experience) and great pastries (recommend the mini cannolis).
Friendly, helpful staff and a peaceful location - what more can you ask for?
Looking forward to my next visit.
M. C.
A very nice and quiet terrace at the edge of the park. Beautiful landscape right in front of your eyes.
V. L.
A bit overpriced (too close to popular British Museum :)) but nice and clean. Good coffee.
Z. J.
Nice location, good food, fairly quick service. Came here for the full English and it didn’t disappoint.
T. C. S.
Wonderful genuine Italian family run business in an ideal London setting
R. H.
Very pleasant situation in Russell Square. Wide selection of food and snacks.
M. C.
Very friendly Italian/English fusion breakfast in the winter sunshine.
B. D.
Lovely fresh english breakfast at 9am and cafe is quite busy
S. D.
Nice place to get some authentic Italian cafe food
M. C.
Great as always. Fantastic breakfast in a stoning surroundings.
J. S.
Busy cafe on a saturday afternoon. Loads of outdoor seating to watch the world go by, and the best latte ive had for ages.
Z. H. G.
Caffe Tropea is paradise - delicious food, lovely charming staff & the most wonderful view in all of London! I take friends, family, colleagues here + it's been a total life-saver in lockdown: the terrace looks onto Russel Square and you can easily sit and work outdoors and soak up the autumn sunshine. Really recommend the delicious carrot cake and amazing poached eggs with pancetta. Coffee is great too, if a bit strong for me! It's London's best kept secret.
M. W.
Handy shop for cheap toilet and house hold cleaning products, I always pop in to the one in Camden when I am down that way, if your on a budget this is the place for you, staff are plesent it's a yes from me,
j. s.
Good service and friendly staff. Decent food. Reasonably priced. Excellent ambience.
K. P.
Lovely cafe. Great coffee and Gelato
a. b.
Coffee and cake good, friendly staff.
D. S.
Always a lovely service.
And so nice to sit outside on an Autumn's morning
M. B.
I have went there with 2 of my friends.
They have ordered some food of which one was pizza.
I have ordered a chai latte which was too sweet but overall was okay.
They were satisfied with their food but personally to me it haven't looked tasty.
Good atmosphere for a lunch or breakfast.
Staff members too fast forward and asked us what we want to order as soon as we entered and then couple of times again.
I. W.
Fantastic tasting food and service. Reasonable price. Lovely park setting. Made to order catering for any dietary needs. Nice that mayonaise was an added choice and not just smothered whether you want it or not. Highly recommended.
A. H.
Lovely place with delicious pastries and friendly service.
C. R.
Good food, reasonably priced, helpful staff, peaceful location in the Gardens
R. W.
Staff are very friendly and talkative (which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preferences). Food is decent, with good service times. Drinks are good. Good position in Russel Square, nice scenery. Close proximity to the British Museum and University College London.
J. A.
Had never been to this cafe in the middle of russel square before but was pleasantly surprised. had a lovely apple pie, and lovely service with a smile.
While busy, the place had a nice energy and vibe. it was a bit pricey, but it is a cafe in the middle of central london so get why it costs a bit more.
P. R.
I love this cafe . Always found the food to be very good. Had the best pasta dish this afternoon and their pizza is fantastic . The team are incredible, friendly and welcoming . Good food, good coffee, good beer and amazing service . A trip to London not the same with out a visit to the cafe . A unique venue in a beautiful location. This is what a good independent is all about, quality and personality.
O. e.
Great service and beautiful cafe located in Russel square greenspace
A. W.
Really nice Italian family, lovely salad, and Bread, with a Blood Orange drink 🍸,
Nice Toilet, a really Great Meal like in Europe.....
R. J.
The best coffee in London, located in beautiful Russell Square l.
M. S.
Ice cream are really nice but a bit over priced in there. Table outside not really clean and full of pigeons.
E. F.
Great location and atmosphere, quite pricey but i guess this is to be expected given the location.
Portions arent that great and i have witnessed staff eating half of peoples order before it gets served to them so beware when youre ordering 'loose items' like crisps or chips. Kitchen staff will gobble a few then the 'front of house' staff will gobble a few more before your order makes it starts making its way to you... and the person delivering it to you outside has probably gobbled a few too!
J. G.
Lovely Coffee lovely surroundings I could spend all day here
S. S.
Service not the best. Came in with my pram and physically had to move chairs around and the table whilst a member of staff was sitting and eating his pasta in the a seat which would ha e been better suited for the pram. It was not a bother to move the furniture but it was not nice he sat in the customer seat. Eventually when I was finished he did get up and ask if I wanted help. Also they forgot part of our order. The coffee is good though.
S. T.
This is one of my favourite cafes in London. Located in Russell Square, it's set in an oasis of trees and calm in the heart of Bloomsbury and is a lovely place to sit, inside or out, and watch dogs being walked, squirrels and birds going about their day and to relax. The real treasure though isn't the location or the pretty interior, but the wonderful coffee and food. Run by an Italian family for around 40 years, the coffee is top notch and the pastries and gelato are amazing. They also serve main meals and breakfast foods. If you're a visitor to London, you'll receive a warm welcome and excellent service from the friendly staff. If you're a regular, you'll quickly be taken into the heart of this delightful place. A real hidden gem :)
L. H.
I have taken a large group of students to this cafe for lunch for a few years now and they always love it. The staff are friendly and they work hard to get the food ready as soon as possible. The menu is varied - we had everything from salads to panini, pizza and pasta. All good and a great location. And a family-run business. Looking forward to my next visit.
K. W.
This a great place for a coffee, snack or a meal in the Square. Friendly, lively staff....family run, and been there a long time. Thanks for staying open in lockdown......
D. T.
Wonderful food, lovely surroundings.
N. F.
A great café in a pretty location, this place offers superb value for money. The food is freshly prepared and served with a smile and very good it is too. It's rare indeed to be able to sit outside without being choked by the permanently gridlocked streets of central London and Russell Square offers great opportunities for people watching. It's run by Italians, so expect good coffee and food
J. Z.
Excellent Italian cafe!!! The best pistachio gelato I could find in London!! Brilliant scenery in Russel Square. Highly recommend for weekend brunch

Excellent cafe, in Russel Square. Beautiful building with seating inside and out. Various breakfast option, hot and cold. Great coffee. Toilets available. Good value for money and friendly and helpful staff. First come first served, no reservations. 5 mins walk from Russell Square tube station, 7 mins from the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury and much better value and views than a hotel can offer. Definitely recommend.
J. S.
Gorgeous! Wonderful staff, the food was superb and the location, wow! Best breakfast ever 😊.
J. G.
It's a nice little restaurant, the staff is friendly and efficient but the food is only fair. We ordered three spinach panini, two of them contained almost no spinach. We complained and they gave us better panini, but they were only lukewarm. The pasta dishes were pretty good, but were also lukewarm. The coffee, however was great.
E. A.
An Italian gem in a leafy London park. The service will make you smile and their pasta, arancini and own made house sausage are to die for! Perfect for dining al fresco in the late summer watching cute dogs running around. Thank you!
S. U.
Excellent family run cafe in a beautiful setting. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is very homely. Great range of foods and drinks.
Highly recommended for a visit. An oasis in the urban jungle of central London.
M. N.
We had lovely breakfasts at the outdoor tables in the square two mornings in a row while staying nearby. The hot breakfast and pastries were both delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful.
L. D.
My first time in England but it felt like my first time in Italy as well! Breakfast was excellent, service was fast and efficient and atmosphere is elegant and professional. The Cannoli was AMAZING, a world above the stale, toilet paper tubes we have in Australia!
J. W.
Lovely spot, great food, very friendly service and reasonable prices for this part of London. Dog friendly outdoors.
D. P.
Always a pleasant place to relax and enjoy a light meal.
A. B.
A family-run Anglo-Italian café in one of London's finest squares. I've been coming here for espressos and breakfast for years and it just gets better and better. The staff are always ready to chat. They're also very accommodating with dogs: turn up at 8am and you'll see the local dog walkers being plied with treats for their pooches. This is London at its very best.
G. J.
Good, clean, well maintained café in the heart of Russell Square Gardens. Very touristy and with counter service; hot food delivered to the table. Many panini, pies, pizza slices etc on display under glass in the counter. Slightly stressful in a queue of dozens mainly with English as a second language, I did not notice until after I was served that the main menu is displayed above head height over the counter. I would have ordered differently. As it was, decent pizza slices, tuna melt and 2 drinks for around 14 quid- very acceptable for the area.
B. B. T.
Classic Italian treats, in a good location, great place to sit, not cheap, worth it to capture a great view of the Square. Staff are friendly.
T. L.
A breath of Italy in amongst a bustling London. Beautiful Italian pastries, excellent coffee and friendly staff. Range of cooked food and breakfast. Note minimum card spend of £5.
R. K.
Lovely family run cafe that serves the best coffee in London. Scenic views across Russell Square. I'm a happy customer of several years & highly recommend this cafe over the boring chain cafes in this area.
D. J.
A lot of places claim to have the best coffee in London, but Tropea really does. Great coffee, great food, great location. And lovely people. What's not to love?
P. M.
Wonderful family run cafe set in a calm oasis where I love to sit and watch the world go by. Excellent coffee and food and service always with a smile. Coming here is a great kick start to my day.
M. B.
This is by far my favourite place for breakfast in London. The food is excellent, the staff superb. It's also easy to find for out-of-town visitors: it's the only cafe actually inside of Russell Square.
P. B.
A very friendly family run cafe in an excellent location within Russell Square. This is where to get one of the best cups of coffee in the area. The family take a lot of pride and care in their selection of beans that shows.
a. z.
Tropea make the best (Italian) coffee you can find in the area, hands down. If you're passing through, don't be tempted to go to one of the nearby chains (Nero and Pret), just try it once and see for yourselves.
H. Z.
Have a cup of coffee and watch people passing by in the park. Just love it.
E. S.
The cutest outdoor cafe! Delicious brunch and hilarious waiters that made our day.
E. B.
My favourite café in London. Fantastic environment and service with a beautiful view of the gardens. Excellent coffee, the kind you can drink without milk or sugar. On a sunny day, it feels like being back in Italy...

We are living in the north of Sweden.
Agree with the writer who said" Have been coming here for 15 years and absolutely love it! A warm welcome and a good selection of food and drink. Lovely staff. Can’t recommend highly enough."
One of the best places in London!
D. G.
Great coffee and pastries 😁👍
G. C.
Fish&chips very very good! The staff is very nice! I recommend it to everybody.
R. E.
Coffee was good and it's in a lovely spot. My friend had a panini which she liked. We found the staff quite rude though
S. C.
Fab cafe on a lovely day. In the park, in the heat. Absolutely lovely. Bit of a wait on service and some of the older staff could do with smiling a bit more, but I was there for a meeting and it was fine enough. Useful location being so close to Euston station too.
I. S.
Lovely cafe with plenty of seating spaces outside for warmer days in London. They make decent coffees, good panini sandwiches & Peroni beer on tap. Overpriced, as it is more of a tourist's trap. Efficient service.
Great spot for lunches in a relaxing atmosphere of the park... However if you prefer to save your pennies, bring a picnic instead & enjoy your food & drinks on the grass/benches right next to the café in the park.
-. e. S.
Very nice cafe beautifully located inside the Russel Square Park. Let your shoulders down and relax for a few minutes. Excellent coffee and good breakfast. Staff is welcoming and service is perfect.
R. R.
A real gem of a find. En route from Euston looking for a quick lunch. Usually go to one of the chains but glad we came here. Genuine, honest Italian food from an Italian family restaurant. Great value too, less than £20 for 2 mains and 2 drinks
R. D.
One of the nicer park cafes in London I think. Seems to be run by people (Italian) who actually are concerned with the cafe rather than the restaurant chains that seem to dominate nowadays through being able to tender high prices at rent reviews. A pleasant experience.
G. H.
Nice ,friendly, food is good but a bit pricey
M. R.
Really nice and coffee and food is good
D. A.
We love this Cafe. The food and coffee is always excellent. The setting is idyllic. The service is good. Most of all, the people here are genuinely friendly. Coming here is always a very pleasant experience.
I. B.
Nice place, great tasting coffee, big cake selection, lively staff.
C. P.
What a great place this is!
There used to be places like this all over central London. Neighbourhood cafes run by the same family for years. Locals would be the backbone of their success topped up by tourists. As London has become taken over by the big companies and brands leading to the blanding of a once diverse capital ( strange how everybody is obsessed by diversity as it becomes less and less prevalent) these neighbourhood gems are disappearing.
The Cafe in the Park is a beacon of light. Run the same family since 1982...together with a great back room team..the welcome is always warm and friendly.
In the warm weather nothing beats sitting outside and watching the world go by. Locals walking their dogs, school parties walking across to go to the British Museum and students from the university looking like students.
They also cater for parties etc. Which we can attest to as a great friend of ours had his wake there. It. Was one of the best do's we've ever been to!
If you are local and haven't been here then go. If you're a tourist in the area then go!
D. P.
Friendly, relaxed retreat - great spot for soaking in the calm grace of Russell Square's green tones and watching the world go by. Family-run; charming staff who exude pride in what they're doing. Food is very good- pasta, paninis and omlettes highly recommended and reasonably priced- also a wide range of cakes and pastries.
Don't miss it- it's one of the best cafes in London..
M. B. B.
Great food and pleasant staff.. Food was a little cold on arrival but nice.. Would come back again....
I. G.
Great little café in a green and lively environment. Had some lovely canneloni and a superb chai latte. The interior is authentic and welcoming, and they have a big, nice terrace. Russell Square park is a great place to relax and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Recommended!
A. T.
I have been here several times when I visit London. Great atmosphere, friendly, helpful staff, amazing food and drinks and a beautiful outside seating area in the middle of Russell Square park. I love it!
J. S.
Friendly staff, tasty treats, plenty outdoor seating in a central park
J. L.
Stopped in here for a chai latte on the way back to re station after visiting Brunei Gallery. Also had a Portuguese custard tart.
Nice.
Lovely views of the trees and park in Russell Square. Closes at 6 which is handy.
Y. K.
Lovely spot in the middle of the park that serves great Italian coffee and baked goods. You can also have a full English breakfast which is pretty decent if a bit on the expensive side.
P. S.
I have been stopping here for fabulous coffee most mornings for a few years now, on my way to work. Recently refurbished and called Caffe Tropea, it's a really lovely family run business with a real focus on top quality and so much better than the generic chain coffee places in the area.
The quality of the food, and for me, especially the coffee is fantastic, I now buy their coffee beans so I can have the same at home. They really take care of their customers, you get a real feel of a personal customer service you just wouldn't get in a chain place.
Their surroundings are perfect for a stop too, especially in the nice weather when you can sit outside in the lovely garden, watching the squirrels running around and the water fountain. It's that rare place where you are two minutes from a tube station but can forget you are in the centre of a city.
I cannot recommend Caffe Tropea highly enough, it's been a brilliant find.
T. S.
I love it here! Great staff. Cannoli as big as your head! But you will eat a full one, honestly (you just may not need to eat for the rest of the day). Fabulous coffee and great out door seating under the trees
M. U.
I have been coming here for almost 20 years and there is nowhere better in this part of town to have that first coffee of the day. A warm welcome, a beautiful setting in Russell Square Gardens and simply excellent coffee.
C. P.
I've been having coffee and food here for a long time. Always good (REAL coffee, made properly, is hard to find) and with a friendly family vibe. Plus of course a lovely location. Just sit and watch the world go by. Bliss.
Chris

Had a lovely Al fresco lunch for my friends 50th birthday. The menu is expansive, pasta, paninis, all day brekkie, salads and an array of sweet dishes. Lots to choose from. The waiters are efficient, a little sharp on the tongue and amusing. I would visit again.
C. A.
This café in the park is owned and run by an Italian family.
The food reflects their heritage and the need to cater for reasonably large numbers at a very competitive price in central London.
Pizzas are excellent, lasagne is tasty but not your normal lasagne.
Coffee is great, as it should be from a traditional Italian coffee machine, and they have Peroni on tap.
Tables outside give you a chance to dine al fresco in a rather nice park.
On a sunny day in London, and only a few moments walk from the British Museum, what more could you ask for!
J. C.
Lovely lunch in a great location.
P. P.
I have been coming to this restaurant in Russell Square Gardens for thirty years now. I am a local resident and I often have a meal or just a coffee here when I go out for a walk. It is a family-run business which means it is very friendly. The food is good and cheap and the view of Russell Square Gardens is superb.
At present, due to the pandemic this restaurant is one of the few places still serving customers during the lockdown. I am glad I can still get my coffee and breakfast as takeaways from here - my favourite restaurant!
C. S.
While visiting London we called here for coffee . It was Sunday morning on a lovely sunny day.Great little cafe pleasant staff, and lovely coffee.. what a beautiful park Russell Square is very relaxing.
A. W.
Nothing but a wonderful experience! Had bruschetta and coffee (nice and strong, a rare find for an Aussie in London) with the most beautiful service from ALL staff including the owner. Quick service, and cheap but good food.
R. W.
Excellent cafe, set amongst the trees of Russell Square, run by a friendly Italian family. Eclectic clientele, sun terrace, great atmosphere and the best coffee and breakfast in London. A real gem.
S. D.
Lovely place with friendly staff. For a coffee, food or even a pint or glass of wine. Perfect view of the park.
P. H.
A nice friendly place to spend time with friends. Staff are lovely and the food is good too. Best thing in Russell square.
k. D.
Really good food and coffee. Cosy and comfortable atmosphere, wasn't too busy and didn't feel rushed. Great for family and friends catching up.
M. G.
Every time I go to London I stop by this café. In a park, with a nice large terrace, the best Tchai soja latte, owned by a very nice Italian family. Lovely place to have a break and enjoy a nice and peaceful moment in the centre of London.
M. V.
If you’re nearby can’t miss this lovely café genuinely family owned since the 50’s. True and exquisite Italian coffee with that elegant and charming Italian twist.
K. M.
Friendly, great coffee and authentic Italian pastries. Good to be back there after a long time working from home.
R. F.
Excellent coffee and affordable. Absolutely recommend it.
K. O.
We recently had lunch here and it was lovely! Great food and lovely staff. A young man with dark hair was particularly friendly. The food was quick and very tasty.
J. K.
Lovely sandwich made to order. Great tea lovely setting in the park
A. W.
My favorite cafe in London. Good food (both breakfast and lunch), good coffee and non-coffee drinks. Family-owned and service is wonderful.
J. B.
I've loved this place for 15 years ' brilliant location and always welcoming. It's even better since the recent revamp, with a more varied menu (lots of good things) and best of all, it retains its family-run ambience; such a rare and precious thing in central London
G. D.
Living nearby and feeling pleasant to pop in and buy some desserts. Tiramisu is my fav so far: the cream is smooth and cool and the sponge tastes fluffy and tender. Defo worth buying one and sitting outside to enjoy the view.

Caffé Tropea: My Home away from Rome
I have been lucky enough to live near this unique restaurant since January and have been visiting it every chance I get. Alas, I have to return home this week, so now is the time to share this destination with others. I am an American who has lived for extended periods in both Rome and London—they are my two favorite cities in the world. Caffé Tropea is the best of both “my” worlds: the ambiance is authentically Italian, but there are witty British touches, like a Full English Breakfast on the menu, balanced by an Italian “translation,” with pancetta and cannellini in place of bacon and baked beans. Lunch sandwiches are here too, as well as all-day breakfast and brunch delights. The Italian pastries are irresistible—cannoli of course, but also sfogliatelle, large and small (with vanilla buttercream or hazelnut-chocolate filling). And the croissants—chocolate and otherwise—are excellent: everything is always fresh. Each individually brewed coffee—or latté or cappuccino or espresso—is perfect. The café is popular with neighborhood regulars as well as tourists who are drawn by its location near the British Museum. Even on those occasion when Tropea is mobbed with day-visitors (as when, on a Saturday in May, it was the chosen site for the tea-time break during the annual London Tweed-Run Cycling Trip), there’s always time for a pleasant greeting and relaxed personal service from the efficient staff (many of whom are family who have worked here since the café was founded in 1981), who take your orders and then deliver them to your table. There are views of the beautiful fountain and plantings of Russell Square Park from inside or from one of the al fresco tables. Go early and often!
C. F.
This is a great cafe in Russell Square gardens and I have visited it for many years. It makes my day, even just to have a coffee there and relax looking at the beautiful trees in the square. You should try it!
P. N.
This is very nice caffee! Family run buissnes not a restaurant chain. Inside/outside lot of space giving you platform for greate dinning out experience. Location is amazing, staff friendly, place to come back 100%
J. C.
Nice Italian cafe in the park.
T. R.
Privileged to be a local resident and this is our absolute favourite place in the world. Great location, great ambiance, great food, best coffee, and above all, great family running it. Thank you Paulo, Aurora, Giovanni, Luca, Alessio, and everyone!
M. S.
Delicious mushroom tagliatelle from a family-run restaurant
F. R. O.
Very good coffee, reasonable prices, friendly staff: excellent place
A. S.
Tropea is just fabulous, an ideal setting 2 minutes from the British Museum and central London in the beautiful Russell Square Park and the café itself is amazing! Paul and Aurora and their son Giovanni -and cousin Luca - serve such good Italian food all day long: a personal favourite is Aurora's home made Salsiccia Calabrese that stars in the Anglo-Italian Job breakfast - mouth watering! Risotto Pescatore, the list goes on - and for the sweet tooth too! The Italian coffee is wonderful. Perhaps best of all is the friendship - a family welcoming that embraces the regulars like Mike and me and also treats each customer as a valued individual : how rare is that these days!
c. B.
nice atmosphere. good coffee. self service
E. H.
A staple! Lovely, family run café and restaurant. Lovely people, lovely place, lovely setting. What else do you need in order to avoid the High Street vampire experience?
F. J.
Lovely location bbut eye-watering prices - almost £9 for a glass of wine. Still you're largely paying for the Russell Square real estate. Would have been nice to be warned when we bought our drinks that they wanted to pack the tables up and rwtrieve glasses 20 mins later, but they did provide plastic tumblers.
R. L.
Only went for tea but the service and food looked very good and nice
M. G.
My family and I have enjoyed
the time at the caffe. The Italian family is very friendly, all food items are delicious but I will particularly recommend the sweets.
D. C.
2019 November recently raised prices. Still okay though. Great location and atmosphere with decent teas, but dry and tasteless food. Come for a coffee/tea and conversation and you won't be disappointed.
E.
Really missed this place. I was a student in 1995 summer and I was going to an english course, close to the russel square and of course, close to the Caffè Tropea. I and my friends, from the course were spending time in our launch break here in this café. We all liked the foods, the place and employees who were always kind and smiley. Unfortunately, I haven't been to London since then. However, If I will get a chance to go to London again Caffè Tropea is one of my favorite places to visit. I checked the web site of the café and I read that the café has been there since 1981. Wow! Long live Caffè Tropea.
B. I.
A nice place for a coffee and other things.
Has good in & out seatings. You could also pick up your drink and sit at the park with your friends.
A. D.
Great little family-run authentic Italian café, with great looks, great location, great food and great people! It's my favourite place for lunch in London.
I. S.
A lovely café in a great location. Excellent coffee and wonderful service, always with a smile. They also do tasty lunches
M.
Best Tiramisu I've had in the UK haha
Such a lovely spot to just sit and watch the world rush by you while you're surround by trees and classic London culture.
C. J.
Excellent food and atmosphere with friendly staff
T. R.
Fast efficient service. Do go to this pleasant Russell Sq Gardens. It's open for take out service during lockdown.
D. R.
Great experience here. Went every day for breakfast and coffee this semester. Family owned and operated. Homestyle food that is quality and at a good rate. 110% recommend!
P.
Nice place to sit for coffee, lots of windows with view of the park
T. O.
This is a really genuinely nice cafe I have been going to for a very long time, the staff are very nice, it's just the hapless tourists that don't listen for their meals being called out, makes me feel sorry for the poor Staff, but the food is excellent, they have a fine selection of cold food that can be heated, as well as a nice breakfast menu, and a hot food menu, including really good pizzas and a selection of pasta, they serve alcohol, a variety of spirits, beers and wines, and of course good Italian coffee, and very good freshly pressed orange juice, all in all, a thoroughly good cafe that I reccomend
S. G.
Great place with indoor dining. Massive breakfasts
P. W.
Looked like they were having a bad day. Coffees were basically chucked to you and same with my tiramasu. Dessert and the coffee was delicious and it was great to enjoy outside.
L. L.
I have known the café almost since their arrival to London in the 1980s. Café Tropea / in the Gardens is a hidden oasis in one of London's busiest quarters, so much so that its existence should actually be kept secret! But this would be immensely unfair to the wonderful people who run the café. Pièce de resistance: The Cantabrian / Sicilian deserts, together with strong Italian coffee.
N. E.
This cafe is mad but great to sit outdoors and watch the world go by !
E. A.
Delicious cappuccino and pastries. I couldn’t have happier and more pleased about my coffee and pastry than I was this morning. Canceling previous plans for tomorrow morning just so I can go back tomorrow.
B. S.
Visiting London. Been here 4 days and this was the best meal I've had since I've been here. Amazing location, excellent service and friendly staff. Highly recommended.
A. M.
Delicious food and drinks, good prices, great service. Absolutely recommend.
L. B. H.
Delicious, fresh Italian treats, be it hot drinks, cakes, gelato or savoury Italian dishes.
J. J.
In summer this is one of my favourite hangouts. The food, the ambience and the coffee are spot on, and their ice cream is as good as in Rome..... la dolce vita
g. T.
I have had the very great pleasure of visiting this oasis of Italian charm serving great food and coffee since 1987. The best cafe in London by far do yourselves a favour and ignore the ubiquitous humdrum tax avoiding cafes of the hughstreet and treat yourselves to a proper family run establishment set in a perfect location
S. S.
A friendly warm welcoming cafe , nice outside seating area. reasonably priced
A. P.

An institution on Russell Sq, proper old style Italian lunch place, pizza pasta panini and incredible dolce. Favourite with the University lot, like myself, for lunch and coffee.
M. R.
Has an authentic Italian feel, with traditional English options alongside. Distinctively southern Italian food from Calabria and Sicily. I had a very good calzone, and there are plenty of other options!
E. R.
Lovely experience surrounded with Italian food very tasty, hope to see you guys soon
J. J.
Fantastic place for a coffee, cake or full on meal.. beautifully laid out with a very very Italian family run atmosphere...a little gem on Russell Square...go...go now..
