Reviews of Caffè Vergnano 1882
S. N.
I absolutely love this place and so happy that I found it! It does the best cappuccino by far and a great selection of something small to bite. Definitely recommend it as I feel it is so under rated and the staff are so friendly. It has a great atmosphere also!
A.
Great coffee, served the real Italian way, with water and chocolate. <3 it brings you back home.
C. R.
Super cozy and small caffè! Delicious coffee and friendly staff. Very close to the Italian Consulate - great place for a coffee before or afterwards!
J. W.
A small but quality Italian espresso cafe in a very historical building in Hilborn.
Category: Artisanal Independent
Awards: The best espresso in London——The Times
Wifi: free to use, not reliable sometimes
Something Special about the cafe:
(1) A cafe based in a white and black historical buildings with 174 years old.
(2) Quite expertly crafted Italian espresso, very cool coffee machine;
(3) For proper espresso, always a little glass of water and a piece of chocolate are provided;
Seating: 16-20 seats, quite small space inside but cosy and stylish decor, and they also have outdoor seatings.
Cost: A little more expensive than other independent coffee shop
Espresso £2-£3.7
Coffee £2.2-£4.1
Ambiance:
Good vibes, and the seats with glass windows are quite lovely, especially in a historical buildings.
What can be improved:
no power outlets and quite noisy due to small space inside, so it is not friendly for remote workers but still good place for meeting friends or just enjoy your time with quality coffee and tasty bakery bites. But their staff could do better on friendliness and more diverse on the selection of bakery goods would be better.
S. B.
Been here three times now - the mocha is delicious and their selection of sandwiches and pastries is also very good. Staff are also very friendly :)
K. B. L.
100++ stars
The Ciambellone (Marble cake) is beautifully moist and melts in your mouth - awesome.
With coffee and (hot) milk is divine. It has that real coffee beans taste that has that natural inimitably bitter sweet taste.
Seriously is one of the cosiest but meticulously classic 'English' coffee place.
Customer service is excellent. Professional and to the point.
A. G. M.
Amazing caffè and desserts in a beautiful setting with a warm atmosphere, very friendly and helpful staff.
j. C.
Located Right in front of the chancery lane station. Loved by business people who is up for the quick espresso fix in the morning. might have to stand in line for a bit , but usually you get your turn in 5-10 minutes. not too big place inside, 'customized' size pastries available along with your coffee. I had 'Mocha', which looked pretty impressive. The taste of it was ok, in a way that I learn how their mocha tastes. I personally prefer the strong taste of coffee in mocha. Liked macchiato here, though. it is a place you wouldn't wanna pass if you happened to see the exterior and haven't been caffeinated that day. #thebinaryscale
R.
Good coffee and nice atmosphere. Staff friendly. My to go place on weekends if I'm in that area for coffee. Weekdays I go down the road to a competitor which truly has the best coffee I ever had.
J. W.
Excellent expressos. Expertly crafted coffees. Love their coffee machines! Stylish interiors - this place has elevated the beverage to an art form and its consumption to a lifestyle. Great place to meet and relax. The happy counter team working there is an asset to the company.
S. P.
A very very very nice place! I would 100% reccomend it! Nice atmosphere, big platter, and great wine !!!
S. W.
Lovely little independent cafe, serving good coffee :)
M. N.
What a joy to be in here, lovely atmosphere, lovely cake, lovely coffee and a warm welcome. Thoroughly recommend...
M. M.
best coffee ive tasted in london - ratified by an italian :) and very nice small delicatessen sweet things to accompany. Bigger filled croissants also nice. Nice atmosphere, will take friends there.
D.
Wonderful cafe, got me out the rain and provided a place to charge my phone and make calls
S. H. S.
Cosy seating; friendly staff; and good enough hot chocolate. They open really early and it's great to visit them early in the morning.
S. O.
Cosy atmosphere. Perfect for a breakfast before going to the office
M. A.
Clean and friendly place. Best Coffee in town! I'm so glad I dont live / work in Holborn otherwise I'd go every day :))
C. P.
The best chocolate and definitely the best espresso in London... you shouldn’t miss it.
M. S.
Awesome little cafe, treats so small and cute it's almost healthy!
S. M.
This was the best coffee I had in London! They have a cool Italian machine that makes the experience that much better!
L. J.
Delicious coffee and tasty muffin. Good location of the shop.
S. G.
Go a cup to go. Would have loved to chill here..
N. D. G.
Caffè Vergnano is my favourite coffee place in London.
The taste of every single hot drink is distinctive and the style of the shop is absolutely amazing.
I must say that I like it because Im from Italy and the taste of the coffee reflects all the aspects that I look in my usual espresso.
The place is cosy and warm, hot chocolate is exactly the same as I remember it in Italy: thick and delicious.
Also, the staff always works hard and precisely serves the drinks at the tables, even if too busy.
The manager is always ready to improve.
5 stars to this amazing place in Chancery Lane, my favourite in England!
F. L.
Great coffee and tasty nibbles. Friendly staff and has seating both inside and out. It also has free WiFi access and a restroom downstairs. It is small but we have always managed to get a seat and table and is right next to Chancery Lane tube station. Prices are reasonable, try it, you will like it.
I.
Very very nice coffee in the London Center!
M. M.
Very busy but managed to get a seat. Tables close together like an.old city coffee house. It was expensive but the coffee and choc we had was delicious. One small pastry and drinks was /£6. Lots of nice food and sweet stuff off like!
A. A.
Great tasting coffee, a relaxing atmosphere, and very genuinly friendly staff. Also loved the cinnamon mini-bites. The cafe is very conveniently situated just by the entrance to Chancery Lane underground, and it's fairly empty in the evening when the working crowds leave.
N. D.
Very cosy place. Reopened recently following arefit and obtaining a licence. Current offer of 50% off wine (glass) and beer makes it worth coming to.
The wine choices are restricted, but the one we chose to drink was lovely so not as big a problem as it could have been.
Doubt it will be first choice once the offer runs out, but definitely good for an occasional visit of an evening.
T. C.
Not easily spotted this place is a jem. I loved the decoration, cosy seating area with cussions by the window. I asked for the advice on what to have, suggestion was to try a pizza. So thin base very cheesy pizza and cup of green ( good quality) tea made my day.
It was lovely to see branded napkins and cups, a complimentary branded chocolate was placed on the side of the tea set. The atmosphere was lovely with music playing at the back. Ladies weren't rushing even though little by little place began to fill up. But it was obvious that none of the customers mind.
I would recommend going there if you are looking for small, coasy place to read a book at just for a cup of hot drink.
P. G.
Nice cozy place. I guess they serve a good enough coffee. Above average for London. They should improve a bit their customer service in order to get 5 stars. Overall the place is ok.
M. C.
Both the flat white and cookie I had were great and only £3.20. Downside is that the cafe can get a bit cold (closing the door would help) and the WiFi unreliable at times, but quality coffee. 👍🏼
D. C.
Have used this coffee house for some years. It now seems to be in decline. While the coffee and pastries are as good as anywhere else, the seats have required replacement for some considerable time and now the gents toilet has no seat! Try a bit harder Vergarnano, your customers are worth it.
A. K.
That was one of the best shots of espresso I've ever consumed thank you very much. It wasn't stupidly expensive for the location either. Would recommend and would definitely visit myself.
K. M.
This place does lovely coffee. It is a small place so be prepared to get cosy with the strangers next to you. Lovely croissants on offer in the morning.
D. A. (.
Coffee is superlative. Wonderful presentation. Nice comfy seating. Most definitely amongst the best I have tried in London. Surprisingly reasonably priced. Must visit for anyone in town and near the Holborn area. 15-20 mins walk from King's Cross station.
N. B. (.
Not just another coffee shop.
They have a good variety of hot chocolate and different but DELICIOUS grains of coffee. They even have cute little bites for some coffee & cake time.
G. P.
One of the best proper Italian coffee that you can find in London. Nice location and very kind staff. Looks like an authentic Italian coffee bar.
R. M.
Decent coffee. I like freshly ground and medium roasted strong coffee and this place is certainly worth a detour as the coffee was spot on. Bit squishy inside, but guess this is testament to their products! 😊
S. M.
The building in which this coffee shop is housed looks ancient and collapsing. But inside is just a run-of-the-mill coffee shop with nondescript service and slightly overpriced coffee. Good if you need somewhere to while away the time near Chancery Lane station but a bit meh otherwise.
J. M.
Interesting to see the reviews below. I have been back and forth a number of times over last month and always very good. This said, it has been same lady making the coffee each time so complaints may be aimed a different barista.
A. C.
I think they could do better in terms of friendliness and decor, but it gets 5 stars from me simply on the basis that it’s probably the best Italian style coffee in London.
J. W.
Lovely branch of the Vergnano chain, I never really knew how to pronounce that.
Their coffee is delicious, but there's definitely more.
Their baristas aren't that creative and practically can just create a heart on the cream, but it's fine. I'd admit that it's interesting how they put a large 1882 calligraphy label on top of every drink.
The creamy foam cap provides a tad of mystery to the drink and if you didn't know what you're having you'll be in the dark. Also, most of the drinks are quite large for the price you're paying.
The service is one of the fastest I've experienced lately which is a huge plus. All the customers were served swiftly and I could see only happy people around me enjoying their caffeine dose. The's also free Wi-Fi which is also a plus.
H. P.
Absolutely love this place. Great coffee and very friendly staff. The espresso gianduia is just divine!
M. H.
This place has amazing coffee. Just order an americano and enjoy. It's pretty cosy, so if there's a big group then space might be of a premium.
A. C.
Nice little spot for a quick coffee and pastry, although they also do sandwiches. Coffee is really nice and if you manage to grab a table, great place for meetings or work
K. N.
One of the best coffee shops in London! Also, makes a great freddo espresso, which is the best way of making iced espresso.
A. M.
Excellent hot drinks and very nice personnel!
F. L.
Excellent coffee, very friendly staff and the even have my young daughter a free hot chocolate. What more can you ask for!
A. C.
Great coffee in a small intimate venue. If you're looking for somewhere to have a quiet coffee and don't fancy one of the many big chains round here, this place is great.
T.
Good place with good prices. Music is too loud. Way way too loud. Weirdly loud. Why would it ever need to be this loud. Also the type of music is out of place. Why is it dance music? It’s 5pm on a Sunday. Ridiculous
b. h.
When Vergnano first got their electra I ended up drinking 6 double espressos back to back, when I returned to my desk I ended up spending the rest of the morning gripping it in caffeine overdose tremors.
Simply the best espresso in London, along with decent cannoli and a wide range of Italian style sandwiches
L. M.
When people mean a pearl this is what they should mean.
The first real espresso I had in one year, fair price good bakery.
Loved it.
Z. i.
Great coffee but very slow service - it took nearly 15 minutes for coffee to be ready. Cosy atmosphere but quite dirty. All in all - meh.
A. S.
Quaint coffee shop amongst the bustle of Holborn/ Chancery Lane. Broad selection of food and fancies on offer. Lovely strong espresso
S. H.
Doesn't come up on google maps when you search for cafes in the local area. Or if you search 1882. So difficult to locate. Especially as there is another coffee shop around the corner called 1882. Apart from that they have good coffee
A. B.
Lovely place, good Italian coffee
V. D.
Great coffee, outside sitting area, some nice pastries and sweet bites and good service.
Improved food selection would give it the fifth star.
O. H.
Nice cafe with great intimate atmosphere and great brownies.
I was not sure if adding the 1882 made the cafe better or worse though (since it does affect the taste of the cappuccino)
G. L.
Great place close to the station of chancery. Good quality of the coffee (finally!!!).
Get energy with a croissant and cappuccino
Y. A.
Best hot chocolate ever! The sitting space is rather cramped and due to popularity seats are a rare commodity.
C. L.
Without a shadow of a doubt this place serves the best coffee in London.... I always try to make time to stop off when in town, highly recommended.
A. K.
Best hot chocolate in London. Change my mind. I dare you. Their coffee is amazing too, I can drink it black.
D. G.
Amazing espresso, it really is the best in town in my experience. Cosy little place with a lovely atmosphere.
V. P.
Good food, nice place with good service. The menu didn't have a lot of things I normally go for, but the starts were very good. Drinks are really good.
E. B.
Here you can get proper Italian coffee, however staff is not very friendly. Definitely overpriced.
A. M.
Great coffee and cakes. Cinnamon Danish was lovely and so was the almond croissant
p. p.
This is my favorite coffee shop in London. Nice coffee, friendly staff, lovely little place by Chancery Lane tube.
M. 3.
Lovely cosy atmosphere. Great service. Good selection of drinks and cakes. Would visit again.
J. S.
Excellent coffee, flat white with soya. Great atmosphere and very cosy.
C. L.
Proper espresso. You always get a little glass of water and chocolate. Very quick service by people who know what they're doing.
J. B.
Very cosy café in a historical part of the City. The coffee is very good quality, as is the food.
A. L.
Great tasting coffee made by experienced baristas with a slightly unfriendly attitude, in line with the other branches of this Italian coffee brand.
S. Z.
Wonderful hot chocolate
P. T.
Had a very nice Cappuccino in Cafe Vergnano 1882 in Chancery Lane. It's a shame The one in Charring Cross Road closed though
a. c.
