Reviews of Dark Arts Coffee
M.
This is their new place after expanding, They were around the corner in Ponsford street up until the middle of 2020 (I think) the expansion comes at a cost. This is a Roastery (My favourite in London) & no longer a Roastery/Cafe, so no food & Takeaway Coffee only on Saturdays only. The Coffee is still as good as its always been & I've bought from here since 2017.
R. H.
I've rarely seen a coffee business get it all right... but this is a really slick operation. The visual identity, brand, website, the logistics... The coffee is great too. Take a bow!
M. S.
great coffee, totally recommend the "lost Highway"
J. J.
Great food as usual. Weekend brunch menu from my last visit was different to the weekday’s lunch menu (this review). The weekend brunch is always busy and the favourites get sold out quick if you don’t get there early. Was abit skeptical about the lunch menu at first but had the Nduja quesadilla and it was delicious. The flat white with oat milk was smooth and excellent. Not quite sure about the heavy background music but it is called ‘dark arts’ after all.

Recommend! Allergie sufferers: better to double check!
I came here as a friend of mine recommended this place. According to him, it is the best brekkie/coffee place in town and I can agree to the greatest part!
The breakfast menu includes classics (salmon, avo, poached eggs and vegan alternatives to those on bread or waffles) as well as some "specials" (indian uttapam, quesadilla, poppy seed & turmeric waffles) and at the till they display baked goods such as fruit-filled croissants, brownies and cake/pies. Gluten free bread available.
As the menu does not list all allergens, I talked to one of the waitressess, which of the dishes could be made gluten free and dairy free, leaving 4 options to choose from, one of them already listed as vegan&gf on the menu. I might be overly careful as I have had negative experiences before and I always double check upon ordering (even if I checked the full allergen matrix/menu) to make sure everything is being taken care of - and I was happy I did, as when my dish arrived the serving waitress informed me that one ingredient had to be removed as it "may contain traces of gluten". I absolutely appreciate that kitchen staff was so carefull (although the place was really busy at that time), however, at the same time I am a bit disappointed as I ordered the only dish that was designated "gluten free" on the menu. (Small side note: when the waitress took my finished plate I asked about CC and if they had dedicated kitchen space - which I doubted anyway as it is tiny - and she explained that although they don't have a separate kitchen space they take good care in keeping everything clean when preparing food for allergy sufferers).
Other than that I had an absolutely delicious meal. It was an absolutely filling portion and had different flavors and textures. It had spicy as well as sweet flavors and taste of the single ingredients was distinct when eaten separately yet made a good balance when mixed together as well. If I could make a small adjustment I would rather have more of the spicy sauce than the sweet chutney, but that is my personal preference.
As already mentioned, the place was very busy within a short time (I came when they opened and it was packed about 20mins later) and it took me quite some time to make a decision what to eat, so kitchen staff was bustling, however the meal was served within a reasonable time, it looked appealingly and ingredients were fresh and tasteful.
The coffee was one of the tastiest I have had. I also ordered a chai, which came in a seperate small pot and had great taste too. If one was there the first time it might not look like it, but I got the impression that staff & the barista take coffee & tea (and food) matters quite seriously and are dedicated in serving high quality meals. Great value for money & absolutely worth the travel.
Due to range and quality of meal & customer service I would definitely rate 5/5, however, due to the issue with the allergens I deduce 1 star, however, I will definitely be back and try some of the other dishes as well.
D. W.
Buzzy little brunch joint with lots of communal tables and an inventive roll call of dishes. Gets very busy on weekends with a manageable half hour wait on food. Lots of good vegan options too.
E. F.
Super hipster hidden gem! Loved it !
Very interesting menu and tasty food.
Great chilled vibes - it’s on the top of my fav coffee places :)
B. B.
Heard good things about their coffee beans but in my experience they are not worth the price. I don't understand why they go for a light roast which is flavour free and difficult to dial in. Thanks but not for me.
EDIT: After some discussion with dark arts I ordered another coffee which was better suited to my needs and it was really good. So I've changed my review to a 4 star.
P. P.
Came a little early to collect my order - not an issue! Prepared it while I waited and made me a coffee. Nice filter, nice people. Thanks x
R. Z.
Cosy cafe and small batch roaster. Busy atmosphere with tons of character and kick ass coffee. Cafes that roast in house are always add a little charm because you get to watch the coffee you’re drinking be roasted. Along with coffee they have a great food offering, especially if you’re looking for a nice brunch. Definitely suggest taking a detour if you’re in the neighbourhood to grab a cup.
T. R.
Very good coffee, friendly and efficient service and an interesting decor. We didn't stop for food but the breakfast we saw looked pretty good.
Although it's not on the menu they do do iced coffee and there are nice benches to sit outside when the weather is nice.
R. A. d. A.
Great food and coffee. There was a 40 min wait for food but they made sure we were aware of it before we ordered. We decided to wait before we enjoyed the coffe soaking the sun on the outside area and the foor areiced before expected. We were really happy after our brunch here 👍🏻
L. M.
The staff at Dark Arts are awesome and the coffee is great whether from the counter or at home. Really glad to see they have reopened a spot to order coffee to-go.
S. G.
Very reasonably priced and so delicious. Would recommend the Bollywood Melt for maximum brunch vibes. Good options for vegan and non-vegan.
H. A.
I recommend the white wine fermentation coffee.
T. C.
Had the Veggie Chorizo and Turmeric Waffles. Absolutely banging. Coffee was great too. Bit worried by all the 1 Star hipster bashing reviews I read on here on the way, but all absolute rubbish. Great place, lovely people, amazing food.
T.
Awesome coffee. Definitely attracts a grungy crowd like the name suggests. e.g staff and customers wear chains, listen to death metal, tattoos for days, piercings everywhere, ripped jeans etc etc. Not a good place for studying or doing work because it can be pretty loud but great place for socializing. Staff are pretty friendly.
y. m.
This place has such high ratings I definitely asked myself multiple times if I was mistaken. It’s a really cute place! Cozy, unique, a fantastic flat white. The food though, was just too much. I had the salmon which arrived looking absolutely beautiful and the first few bites were actually really good. But there was rosti AND bread - overkill. The rosti was a little soggy. The eggs and hollandaise were too grainy with not enough flavor - thank goodness for the capers! I think they really need to hold back a little and make sure each individual item is perfect instead of hiding behind putting a whole lot of really tasty sounding things on a plate.
L. B.
Amazing brunch with delicious coffee and fantastic vegan food, definitely going to be coming back soon!
E. H.
I sampled Dark Arts coffee at a market last year and I've got to say, I am hooked! Been ordering online from them a fair amount lately and it's so tasty! Really good deals and fantastic customer service, too. Can't wait until you guys reopen so I can thank you in person!
M. A.
Amazing breakfast and coffee! Good vegan options too. Love it!
T. J.
VERY unique and quirky place. Amazing coffee awesome brunches.
F. F.
Delicious food, affordable prices, chill atmosphere, plenty of vegan options. A hidden gem
M. P.
Fantastic and super innovative menu with tremendous combination of ingredients. Most importantly it tastes even better than it sounds. Worth queuing and waiting
C. M.
Impossible to fault. I hear the coffee is amazing and while the breakfast menu is small, every dish is delicious. Decent portion sizes, great value for money.
You might get the impression that this is a “too good for you” hip kind of place but the service is nothing but smiles.
One of my all time favourite brunch spots in London.
M. J.
This is my favourite weekend spot. Great coffee and great food. Wonderful atmosphere as well.
L. L.
One of my favourite cafes in London. Only open Thursday to Sunday (UPDATE: now open on Wednesdays too) but when it is open, it is serving amazing food with some of the best vegan options in the area. I had a sandwich here which might just be the best sandwich I've ever had. Normally playing good (rock) music. I love the laid back atmosphere, the decor, and that they serve great coffee of course.
H. B.
THE best spot for brunch in all of London... really want to keep it a secret but at the same time think everyone should go. The food and coffee are incredible, with a menu that changes regularly so there's always a reason to go back! You may have to wait a bit as they're so popular it gets mad busy, so I recommend you take your time, don't go there too starving and chill out... it's worth the wait I promise!
C. R.
One of my favourite spots in London for Coffee and Brunch. It’s a very refreshing cafe from the ever growing brunch scene of East London. Anything on the menu will leave you feeling very satisfied. Coffee is also always great. Expect a wait on the weekend but it’s worth the wait!
L. M.
I’ve had a coffee shop crush on Dark Arts for years, but this was my first visit. The space is so cool, the coffee is great, and I love all the vegan options! I am also totally in awe of the staff. They are working with a TINY combined kitchen and coffee bar space, and the fact that they are able to churn out the high quality food and drinks that they do, while keeping the space looking spotless is really phenomenal. The staff are efficient and friendly, even at the height of their brunch rush. It’s true, you might be waiting a while for a seat/ your coffee/ your food if they’re super busy, but a) it’s worth it and b) what else do you really expect when you walk up to a place with a queue out the door? I mean, come on. These folks are killing it.
D. N.
The place is relatively small, but the food is amazing! I had the turmeric nduja waffle with the poached egg and it was incredible! The bread is super nice too and the baked beans! The coffee is excellent too! Only thing is that the brownies (i had the tahini one) are a little stale and hard, didn’t like them that much..
A. E.
Been using this company for coffee since the initial lockdown since March. Absolutely amazing!!!! Great company! Cool merch, GREAT coffee!!! LOVE IT!! Not had one bad batch/order from them, all incredible!!!! Don't hesitate, support this company , you will not regret it!! HUGE fan!
A. V.
Coffee is good, food is great, amazing music.
£2 for a cup of good filter coffee (Very good price) and big portions are served.
Bloody busy on weekends though, so don't step in if you're already on a rush.
Staff always friendly even if hangover ;)
Summer is best if you can catch a table outside
D. S.
Great coffee! Especially the anaerobically fermented beans are amazing.
P. B.
Been ordering fairly recently due to a recommendation from a friend and I have to say it’s the best coffee I’ve had ! Not to mention they have outstanding customer service and do look after their customers. Well done guys keep up the hard work !
S. A.
Place is in one of those arches under train lines.. so already very “hipster”. No other buisness is around which makes it have a weird vibe. The service was trying to be cool or I don’t know by not saying a simple “hello” when ordering from the counter. The cook was very friendly though - IF I was rating ONLY her she would get a 5 star 🌟
You can actually see from the photos of reviewers that there are more food photos than anything else hah, cause the food is really good !
Their coffee is good (it’s speciality after all), the food is great too with vegan options if anyone is looking for some meat free / animal-product-free options and very filling as well. It could be probably priced slightly lower.. but just to make it clear this seems to be a place for the middle class cool hipster community..maybe with a touch or heavy metal community too 😅
However if you’re in the area and want brunch - go there you will be pleased and probably won’t even need dinner !
I liked the food and that is probably the only reason I would go back there. Other than that .. just another speciality coffee shop located kind of inconveniently with their usual wooden tables and thick cups.
But as I said great food ! If you’re more of a foodie than a coffee geek go there 🤤
G. C.
the hour i spent here i will consider to be a perfect stretch of time in my life. thank u dark arts
B. E.
Amazing coffee beans and merch. Love the brand and everything about Dark Arts Coffee. Follow their Instagram account and buy a monthly coffee subscription. You won't be disappointed
S. T.
I went here for the first time last week! Absolutely love it! ❤️😍❤️😍 Excellent vegan food and other dishes well made, outstanding coffee and great people...what more could you want? Can you open closer to my home please...I'm going to walk there today as my treat and it's a 90 min walk, which says a lot. 😂
M. D.
Lovely staff, good service. We were told that food had a 30 minute wait (which we didn't mind as we weren't in a rush and they were busy) but we got a seat and received our food well within this time. Their vegan sausage rolls are incredible.
K. H.
Great little place. Part cafe (with a food prep area behind the coffee machine) part office for the roastery operation. Achingly beautiful-in-that-rock-kind-of-sense staff, superb friendly service and most importantly a simple but perfect coffee menu.
The music reflects the tattoos-piercings-metal vibe of the staff but isn't intrusive to have a conversation. Or you can sit outside if the weather allows.
Beans and merch available to take away.
D. V.
Good cafe, food and sound staff! Been coming here quite often, preferably come down during the week to get a nice spot, chill and have a read (or work on your laptop). Its banging during the weekend too but just know what times are least busy as is it does get packed!
T. D.
Food and coffee are to die for (pun intended). Interesting mix of vegan and meaty dishes. Super flavourful and delicious pastries, too. Which is good because there is usually a 20 minute wait for hot food on weekends, so you’ll be grabbing a coffee and pastry to munch while you wait and watch amazing food be delivered to the people next to you.
C.
Father Yod & Close Encounterd are delicious, delivery was speedy and the cheeky sticker was a nice bonus. Hell yeah
B. C.
Wowee! Service, food and coffee all impeccable. I love that you can have a choice of fully vegan breakfasts, but that there are also omni options too. This is a perfect place. My only complaint is that I always manage to eat too much here (but now I take away something for later!)
N. Y.
absolutely amazing food, love the fact that they cater for different diets, so my mom (a meat-eater) and I (vegan) both could enjoy a great meal
+love the layout of the cafe, very unique decor
d. j. b.
Really huge fan of their coffee, plus the café open on Thursday through Sunday, I Will Kill Again, puts together some banging food for the brunch and lunch crowd. It gets incredibly crowded on Saturdays and Sundays, so shake off your hangover early and try to get in before 11am to beat the crowds on those days. They sell coffee beans on site as well while the café is open.
K. G.
O.M.G. This place is SO good. Great for vegans and non vegans. They often have new things on the specials menu. My favourite is the avocado, muffin and seitan. Get there at opening time to be sure to get a seat!
G. C.
Beans are some of the best in the city. I'm from Chicago...one of my favorite roasters there, Dark Matter, suggested Dark Arts. They are cut from the same cloth. These roasters are on the forefront of innovation in the coffee world, so if you want a truly outstanding bean, got to Dark Arts (or Dark Matter, next time you visit Chicago). Shop is challenging to find, tho...its in a vault under the Underground rails, accessed down an alley. Oh, and they have seriously delicious snacks. (its not a place to work, though, so leave your laptop behind)
E. J.
One of the best brunch spots in London, amazing vegan and vegetarian options. Great concept and good coffee. Gets busy on weekends.
P. A.
Finally, a roaster who doesn’t follow the norm. London has great coffee shops and roasters - but they all start to look the same, try and taste the same, brand themselves the same, and have the same generic, ‘wholesome’ vibe. This place is different - read the back of their coffee packing, it describes their entire ethos (to summarise: they just care about making a nice tasting drink).
It also helps that I had an absolutely incredible Americano from here just now, and happily bought a couple of bags of their beans on my way out.
V. M.
Best cafe in London! wonderful spot, food was great and portion was huge compared to the price of it! Coffee was obviously amazing! I mean everything taste good and the shop it’s son nice
N. G.
Came here for the first time. I couldn’t find it the first time I tried to visit but so glad I came back. The cherry and tahini cheesecake was insane and the filter was really nice. Great place to come and work with nice staff and good music
S. E.
It’s a 5 from me. This little spot is nestled in under the train tracks in a quiet part of hectic Hackney. But when you find it, you’ll be blown away! Very bold dishes and mixing ingredients you wouldn’t think could dance so gracefully in your palate, but boy howdy they know how to work it! And the coffee has moves too! I will be returning to this little gem
J. W.
Friendly, cosy place. It was pretty busy when I visited but had a nice vibe. I just got a coffee which was excellent but the food I saw looked great too and there were lots of vegan options.
M. N.
1. Delicious coffee
2. Super fast delivery
3. Amazing customer service
Thank you so much guys- keep it up 🤙
A. V.
Coffee is great. Cant wait to try the food next time.
M. K.
I’ve only had the coffee here and it’s great.
The oat milk flat white is delicious.
Great deal for NHS staff too.
B. G.
Decent sized servings of reasonably priced Melbourne-style brunch. Quality coffee. CJ highly recommends the eggs.
T. W.
Amazing coffee delivered insanely fast.
T. C.
Absolutely amazing food and coffee, atmosphere is great but too popular for own good and need to expand, in the good weather it would be impossible to get a seat
D. M.
Food and coffee is above excellent. There is also a wickedly dark theme that will interest your curiosity, with music to match. Well worth the visit!
E. J.
Lovely atmosphere with good music, great coffee and cake. Quite busy and can be a wait for seats, but personally I thought it was worth the wait.
M. M.
Hard to to find (enter from the alleyway just near the bridge) but excellent, excellent coffee and the best avocado on toast in London. Note the cafe is actually called 'I Will Kill Again', Dark Arts is the roastery located on the same premises.
F. C.
Stunning set up from black magic bean worshipping crew. Fantastic vegetarian fair with options for a pounds worth of flesh. Wednesday through Sunday. Stay away!... or let me cut in front.
m. g. b.
They are not serving food anymore… :( Don’t understand why; it was my favorite place for breakfast in London!
G. L.
So far the best coffee I had in London
In love with Koresh, the Nicaragua coffee !
I hope to be able to buy more of it when I come back ☕️💫💕also thanks for your kindness.

(Translated) Brunch cafe so good. Everywhere you want to go to London. The place where this cafe is hidden is interesting, the interior of the cafe itself is good, and the playing is lovely. The price is also good.
