Reviews of Forbes and Hamilton Coffee House
C.
Found this through the Good Coffee app (under the name Wild and Wood, which I assume is outdated information) and stopped in for a drink after lunch. Coffee came very quickly and was very nice, and already a perfect temperature for drinking. They use jersey milk as standard, which is a nice touch and definitely noticeable, but alternative milks are also available should you need them.
As we’d already had a decent lunch, I wasn’t able to find room for cake, which is sad since the options available looked lovely!
The interior is really interesting with newspaper clippings and photos up all over the walls (which I believe are all panelled in reclaimed wood from a church?) and has a cosy feel, which I prefer over the more minimalist style that seems to be getting popular now.
G. H.
Hands down the best coffee you'll have if not in the city but in London. Such a gem of a location. Monmouth coffee well served and with an array of pastries to chose from. They remember my order each time which adds that extra touch in my opinion.
N. B.
This little cozy cafe is one of my favorite coffee place in London.
S. C.
I try not to drink coffee at lunch because it keeps me awake in work all afternoon. Just kidding. I've been working in this area about 4 months and finally found this place. It is all about the coffee and you can tell: they have lovely Monmouth roasts and only use Jersey milk. The interior design is like a treehouse club house and not only is the coffee like the best coffee you had in that dream once, but the food is lovely too. Will definitely be back as often as possible.
J. “. C. C.
Very fun little place, with kind staff. The drinks and food are also very good.
Definitely recommend going here once. Or twice.

I stayed in a hotel around the corner and came here every day. The coffee is gorgeous and the croissants a pleasure. Very friendly staff and a table sharing policy. If you’re looking for a proper(!) coffee in London this is your place to go!
E. B.
A wonderful welcome, friendly staff and the BEST coffee! I’ve now started going to work a little later so I can get there just after 7.30am when it opens
L. W.
You can't be blamed if you've not stumbled upon this little place before, as I think that's the only way a lot of it's customers found it too. But it just proves you can find some real hidden gems in this city if you keep your eyes open.
It's extremely quaint inside with no wi-fi and limited seating, so it's a wonderful little place decorated floor to ceiling in wood with church style bench seating to tuck yourself away and catch up with friends.
They have their own version of the cronut in stock, but they sell out quickly so get down early if you want to give one a try! While their selection of sweet & savory is limited, their cakes (especially the carrot cake) is perfectly baked and will leave you wanting to try out the rest of their options!
F. P.
One of my favourite coffee places in london. Their flat white and carrot cake are stupendous. Such a shame I am not around anymore!
M. S.
Good coffee in the heart of Moorgate. Use Monmouth coffee so if that is to your taste then happy days. Not the best in the area but up there and has a nice seating area. Super fast service!
S. F.
Small, cozy and lots of character. All pastries and treats are from wonderful St Johns and they use Monmouth Coffee and Jersey milk! Paradise for a coffee lover looking for an authentic real experience in London! 😍
A. C. C.
The interior looks like it should be located on a quaint side street, but it's on a major thoroughfare. Very busy place, but very efficient in filling takeaway orders. Can also sit to chat or catch up on social media. But not a place to read or hang with a laptop. Decent pastry options, too. Staff very friendly.
N. T.
What a great little coffee shop. Serving Monmouth coffee and tasty pastries. Friendly staff and cute atmosphere, going to become a regular.
R. L.
Lovely spot for coffee that's tucked away in Soho. This spot is just inside off the main road and in a lovely square. It's tucked away which makes you feel like you're in a special world when you find it. The square is lovely and lively all the time. Great brownies and pastries on order as well - enjoy! Not lots of room to sit so if you see a spot, grab it quickly!
S. P.
Cosy wood interior and great flat white but my favourite thing here are the cakes. So far I've tried the delicious chocolate tarts, the carrot cake and the elusive baked cheesecake. Actually, the best thing is the staff, especially Bozena who made my day and was cheerful and chatty, whilst speedily making my coffee. Go in whenever you're in Moorgate area.
J. d.
I study around the corner and have been going there for the past three years (avoiding my university's inside costa..) as it is definitely the best coffee shop within a mile. Cozy, amazing well done super-tasty coffee done by their wonderful owners. The pastry looks amazing as well!
E. V.
Cosy little place with good coffee. It's a small place but enough seating space if you can share tables. Don't expect a lush sofa or couch seat though. Service was fast and efficient, cakes looked really good though pastry was average and didn't taste fresh.
J.
People moan about the lack of soya milk, but there are plenty of alternatives nearby. People moan that the place is small, but there’s a massive City outside to explore. Yes, it’d be good if they had plants based cups, but you can bring your own reusable cup.
The coffee is great, the owner comes across like Basil Fawlty, and the cakes are pretty good. I enjoy going in.
M. M.
Decent flat white, though I thought there was a little too much bitterness in the coffee. Very small space, definitely more suited for take-away. I would go back to try their very nice looking selection of sweets and pastries that appear to be homemade and give their coffee one more shot.
D. J.
A great find. Small (bijou) coffee shop between Bank and Liverpool Street that seems to be sufficiently off the beaten track that even at 9am on a Monday, there are seats available, which is going some as the place probably only seats a dozen. The service was great with the friendly staff overheating our order and then bringing it to the table and then having the machine ready for us to pay as we left. Highly recommended
S. B.
It is nice to find from tike to time an independent coffee shop. It is quite hard to find the place, hidden in the gallaries of London Wall. The interior is very warm and the walls are filled with movie stars pictures. The coffee is of very good quality and the cake selection is very good in variety and quality. Friendly staff. Doesn't accept amex.
A. K.
You got some churches bench as sitting, which is rare. Shame it's on the main road the traffic doesn't help.
Will be success too, if it located in an alleyway.
Full of character.
C. W.
One of the nicest atmospheres of any coffee shop in London. It feels like it has been here for centuries!! Such a great alternative to the soulless chains nearby. And the coffee is excellent
W. P.
Good barista skill means you get a decent cup of Monmouth coffee with milk from Jersey cows. They don't mess about with syrups and the like, just good, honest coffee. It's quite small with limited wooden seating that adds to the charm. They have a policy of sharing tables. The walls are adorned with mostly older comedic actors giving it a vintage feel.
D. S.
By far the best coffee in the Moorgate area. A ‘proper coffee’ place.
S. C.
Amazing Cappuccino with fruity notes, they source good pastries as well (not the best but good choices anyway), and good place to work in a "stop and go" fashion.
It has a very traditional look to it with everything wooden, while being in the busiest part of the city, but they are well adapted to your needs as customers.
J. K.
The coffee in this city has something to be desired aside from a couple great spots. I wasn't expecting this place to be as good as it was. One of the best coffees I have had in London. High quality cappuccino. Really nice staff, and a cute small shop.
M. E.
A cute and cosy coffee shop with a great house blend and top milk skills! Shame its not a little bigger but hats off, great little coffee find in London! Worth a visit for a flat white
B. L. H.
First great coffee shop I visited in London. You can tell the baristas really know what they're doing. I want to know their secret on how they steam the milk to turn like silk. On top of a good drink, the cafe has a real cozy feel to it. My favorite area is the nook and I love the communal tables. I haven't tried the food yet, so ignore that.
E. R.
Great coffee, friendly uncomplicated service
R. E.
Outstanding coffee and cakes, served with a smile.
C. W.
Coffee and cakes with character! Always a welcome stop in the City.
D. L.
I reviewed this place for another website when it first opened and loved the place. The decor - recycled church pews, wooden panelling for the walls - is amazing and the coffee isn't bad either. In terms of the pricing, the flat whites are pretty much around the same price as any other independent coffee shop. I wouldn't consider them expensive given that the owners do have overheads to cover. The pastries, from Clarke's and Villandry, are tasty, and I highly recommend the ham and cheese croissant if it's available. What keeps me from awarding it a fifth star is the fact that the service seems to have gone down over the years. I go to Wild & Wood on and off (it's hard to be a regular when it's not around the corner and there are a lot of good coffee shops in London, so the owners do know me by name. The thing is, the last time I was here, I brought a friend along with me to show her the place, and her comment, "for a place that knows you, the owners definitely don't seem that friendly." And that's true, it seems to have become a little more impersonal the last few times I've been, and that saddens me.
S. B.
Lovely coffee and friendly service. Good sandwiches too. Felt the tone of some of the notices a bit telling off in tone. Also, "No decaf, no soy" etc will exclude some customers.
D. G.
Fantastic coffee shop. Love the decor, the service and the cakes. But let’s be honest, it’s all about the coffee...and these guys do it...well!!!
S. A. S.
Fantastic coffee shop, friendly and welcoming staff. Coffee was sublime
G. H.
Great place for proper coffee (using Monmouth beans) to takeaway or have in, in a cosy wood-panelled room. They also do good pastries. No syrups.
T. B.
Lovely place, quite small, 4-5 tables from memory. Serve Monmouth coffee which is made and prepared very well. You can purchase the coffee from here in the same bags, quantity and price as Monmouth in Borough Market, so perhaps an option instead of travelling to London Bridge.
W. P.
The heavily wooded interior of this tiny brilliant coffee shop is like being in an old ship. Or if you sit in the tiny booths, a coffin. The coffee is superb, the pastries ok, service ever friendly and welcoming. Quite unique and a stand out on a soul less street.
C. T.
The service were nice and polite. There are no wifi and not many seats in the cafe shop, really cosy. I ordered a black americano, first taste was a little bit sour but strangely when I drank the rest of cafe with some salad in Food of Thought. it became mild and smooth. I definitely go there again not only for the cafe but also for the delicious cakes. BTW there is no toilet and that the reason why I did not have a cake this time. cheers, CY
A. H.
A tasteful donut with a perky espresso. Good service.
K. G.
Beautiful little place with reclaimed church pews for seats. Expensive coffee but worth it for a treat. Going to Wild and Wood is like going to church – a church dedicated to the Gods of Coffee that is.
I try not to go there too often as it is such a special place I’d rather not let it get mundane through over-use. Usually crammed full of squishy men squeezed into their wooden pews, Wild and Wood is best visited early in the morning when the clientele is less dense on the ground.
The place is wonderful to look at – wooden furnishings everywhere, retro newspaper cuttings and candles – yes, real actual candles (take that, Health and Safety police!) – dotted around the tables. It even has a religious sense of quiet calm about it somehow – perfect for a wet Tuesday.
J. A.
I remember being very sad when this lovely place used to be on New Oxford Street and then had to close due to property redevelopment...and how happy i was when I randomly saw it re-opened in Moorgate! A cosy, dark place to sit with your coffee, no loud music, no modern distractions, has its own character...if only all coffee shops could be like this.
M. S.
This small but perfectly formed hangout scores high on the cosy-o-meter, has lovely staff, great coffee and an exemplary assortment of sweetmeats to tempt even the most ardent waistline-watcher.
M. L.
Great independent coffee shop on London Wall. It's quite small and loud with the sound of coffee grinding and espresso being made all the time. All with it if you love quality coffee, if not please go to Costa.
R. J.
The only bad thing about Wild & Wood is that it ruins every other coffee shop in London. The coffee is exceptional and the cakes are a guilty pleasure everyone should enjoy.
The new location in Moorgate is not as cosy as the old Holborn venue but still has a charm and most importantly the service has not changed and is still excellent.
a. b.
Excellent coffee, friendly staff, yummy carrot cake.. But they charged 2 pounds for about 50ml of milk for my 2 year old daughter. Had a happy time there
S. C.
Great coffee, proper baking. No revolting palm oil in the baking but proper butter. The Jersey milk is a nice touch.
E. J.
You can't be blamed if you've not stumbled upon this little place before, as I think that's the only way a lot of it's customers found it too. But it just proves you can find some real hidden gems in this city if you keep your eyes open.

A. B.
Great coffee but a little cramped. Depends what you are after. Definetly not a place to while away a few hours on your own with a laptop.
A. R. K.
Best coffee in the West End and also the current London home of Cronuts. Love the wooden paneling and have spent several hours here on meetings before. Note this place is cash only.
R. M.
small coffee bar on New Oxford street, does good coffee at reasonable prices. my only small regret is the is no larger variety. the place is cosy, slighty of the beaten track and all the better for it..
D. N.
Cosy little independent (I think) coffee shop nestled in amongst the chains along the London wall. More of a place to relax than to camp down to get a bit of work done as there didn't appear to be any wifi, and the tables and chairs were more about the aesthetics than comfort.
A. M.
As you may have seen on the Cronut Crawl post a week or so ago, we tried to go to Wild & Coffee only to find out that they weren't selling any on Sunday. That sucked, but luckily Becky managed to get there the following Tuesday at 11am and get her hands on three of them. One for her, one for me, and one for my delighted cousin who happened to be meeting me later that day.
It turns out that Wild & Coffee's cronuts are actually made by Cocomaya and shipped over Mon-Sat at 11am. You can call ahead and reserve your cronut if you want (quite a useful thing that) but I'd recommend trying to get there as close to 11am as possible as the cronuts start to lose some of that lightness as the day goes on.
This cronut was massive and required a bit of jaw unhinging to get in a full bite, but damn it was good. It's an airy flaky pastry with defined layers and a doughnut-y softness inside moistened just a bit by drops of cream. A potent sicilian lemon glaze on the top gives it most of its flavour and it's dressed with scattered flower petals. All in all, it gives you a strong impression of spring backed up by it's fresh and clean flavours.
For £3.70, it's a bit pricey and the most expensive cronut we've come across so far. Taste-wise, it's on par with Rinkoff, but loses points for the much worse value for money proposition.
C. W.
Does not do any milk substitutes or any dairy free food (and seems to be proud of its no soy policy). Fine unless you’re lactose intolerant or vegan. Also has no bathroom
M. C.
Best coffee in the area! No one even comes close to the coffee quality they offer. The cakes being incredible is seriously a bonus
C. R.
Amazing orange & polenta cake. Small cafe but cosy with some of the best coffee in London. You'd probably walk past barely noticing it but don't! You won't regret it.
G. G.
Yes it is busy sometimes, yes you sometimes have to wait a few minutes for a coffee. But it is worth it. Doesn't do silly coffees, but it is so much better than the populist alternatives.
M. H.
Such a cute spot tucked away on an otherwise busy road. Pastries from St John, coffee from Monmouth, and a quiet, quaint atmosphere. Definitely recommend it!
J. L.
absolutely spectacular coffee, great service and a quaint little cafe. i highly recommend the blueberry muffins - the best i've had by miles.
G. H.
The best coffee shop in London. Bar none. Great cake selection as well. Fab staff, perfect service.
f. c.
Best coffee in London! So happy when they appeared on London Wall! Try it you'll love the coffee, the staff and the atmosphere.
M. D.
Very nice coffee and a quaint place to stop. Be prepared to share table as there's not much room.
O. L.
A change of name but still the best coffee, pastries and people around. Recommended.
N. R.
Fantastic coffee shop. Serving “coffee”. (Not caffeinated milk shakes etc.)
They don’t come much better than this.
G. G.
Pretty decent espresso; the place is small, but that's not the point for a place that serves good coffee.
G. D.
Great coffee and a lovely atmosphere. A refreshing shop in the middle of lots of coffee chains
P. P.
After staying at the nearby 5* Grange hotel and being served cheap nasty food for breakfast the day before (for which they charge £23 each for continental with an £8 suppliment for cooked!) We ventured out the next day and found here, Excellent foccicia, almond croissant, coffee and tea :)
M. P.
Nice coffee, great desserts, friendly staff, excellent location... but seriously lacking in seating space
M. Z.
Great book in the middle of the city, ah and great coffee to. Go at least once, great atmosphere paired with great coffee, can't go wrong.
L. W.
Super cute interior, really reasonably priced coffee and lovely staff (although I evidently haven't encountered the reputedly abusive manager yet!).
A. M.
Cute cafe, nice hot chocolate. I came out smelling of food though, I think because it's so small and not particularly well ventilated.
N. G.
Best coffee near Moorgate! Great service and proper velvet-y coffee!
L. W.
