Reviews of Oscar's SE13
M. V.
Great coffee and small, quality menu with a cosy terrace. Can get busy on a weekend as expected, but the staff are always very accommodating and allowed me to charge my phone whilst I stayed.
D. G.
Excellent coffee and food for a quick lunch. The back garden is lovely and staff is very friendly!
D. F.
Popped in for a takeaway coffee and cookie while exploring the Waterway path. Fantastic service, delicious cookie and superb coffee. We’ll be back for more!
L. Y.
This is my absolute favourite cafe in London. The staff are all beyond lovely and the coffee is made to perfection and great quality. They have a lovely peaceful garden and offer a few rotating vegan lunch and cake options in the week.
G. S.
The very best place in SE London for a coffee! We love the brilliant range of filters, as well as the delicious food. The staff are always bright and friendly, and focused on bring part of the local community. We recently held a book launch event at Oscar's and every single guest mentioned the tremendous canapés - all, happily, vegetarian - the amazing wine, and the courtyard garden which was a peaceful and beautiful to enjoy.
Highly recommended!
E. K.
So overpriced! This place used to be my favourite cafe in the area, but a tiny Cinnamon bun now is £4! A coffee is £3.20, and the cup size has shrunk! This is a size of a small flat white…What’s happening?…
J. L.
Great coffee as always with the added bonus of being free for the NHS. I think this is such a nice touch and one I do feel bad for using but equally highly appreciate and would never abuse. Pastry’s are good too and it’s nice they’ve reopened fine or drink in in their funkily back garden outdoor space.
M. A.
Probably the best coffee in the area, but there’s no wifi?
The place is nice especially the garden, and the staff is super friendly but please add a wifi. I’ve seen people including myself, doing online work and having to do a hotspot from my phone🤦♂️ it doesn’t seem to make sense for a place this big to not offer their customer a wifi connection
T.
Oscar's coffee is consistently good, and the food delicious. The staff are very knowledgeable and always helpful. The beans they sell also taste great.
N. X.
Great cafe with a lovely garden, tasty coffee, gooey brownie, and friendly staff
O. B.
The coffee here is delicious and the staff are always friendly. Also the cakes and bread are delicious, highly recommend
D. Z.
The best sausage rolls you'll ever have, however make sure you go on a weekend as they do not make them on week days!
M. K.
Best mocha and flat white in Lewisham!
G. K.
Lovely little cafe with quality coffee and very good food. My favourite is their savoury pastries - amazing baking leaving the cakes moist. Also a fan of healthy and yet tasty salads for lunch.
A. D.
Good coffee and friendly service. The takeaway is great but can get busy at times so there may be a queue or wait - no worries if you're not in a rush! They also sell coffee beans so you can brew at home and will help you pick one that's right for you if you fancy a change or are unsure.
C.
Sat in the garden, could have been somewhere else it was so quiet and relaxing. Wonderful cheese toastie with an unusual and tasty salads. Quick, friendly service. Will definitely visit again
T. C.
great place , perfect coffee, super service.
G. D.
Wonderful community cafe with great people and a laid back vibe. Sit in the garden with a cinnamon bun.
L. H.
Absolutely great coffee & a welcoming super friendly vibe. Worth 5 plus stars! Food is so great too. Cakes & soup & sandwiches are well with a visit. Been visiting for a couple years & I’ve never had a bad coffee or experience. And during 2020 the service & friendliness was a welcome delight too. Inside vibes & decor amazing. Definitely one of the best coffee/cafes in Lewisham borough x
D. B. (.
Cosy and quite place to enjoy a coffe or a slice of good cake. There is a small garden on the back, really pretty. The staff is so kind.
E. D.
I love Oscar's so much! Their hot chocolate is amazing and such friendly staff. Ladywell is lucky to have a great place like this in the neighbourhood. Thank you for keeping my spirits up over lockdowns 😀
A. W.
Great coffee and pastries. A lovely garden to enjoy them in.
It’s card only, which makes for quick and easy payment.
L.
What a lovely place. Coffee always tastes good, foam not burnt and right temperature. Also interior looks fab.
Safe environment in current situation in place and all staff wearing a face masks.
A bit pricey for a small cup of coffee, but well worth it, little shame they don’t do bigger size too.
N. N.
Great, well made coffee and a great selection of beans amd brewing stuff
J. W.
Sat in their lovely garden and enjoy a delicious afternoon afternoon sausage roll. Staff was friendly and attentive. They were careful regarding covid protocols. Will definitely be back!
P. B.
This little gem of a cafe is my home from home. The garden provides a welcome haven from the busy road, the service is swift and the menu varied. The cakes in particular are superb! The newly refurbished cafe isn't as cozy as it used to be but still a pleasant decor. The coffee was a bit bitter but the cinnamon bun was lovely. The food menu looks very interesting and I will definitely return to have lunch there at some point.
A. G.
Gorgeous, delicious food, displayed with love and attention to the details! We loved it!
E. R.
Lovely spot for breakfast - excellent selection of pastries and goodies. Very warm welcome upon arrival and great service throughout.
R. M.
Very friendly staff, great coffee and very tasty toastie
O. P. C.
Oscars Cafe Is just Brilliant I I have been visiting This cafe on a regular basis as It’s Shares the same name as myself and also for my morning coffee and I honestly can’t ask for a better place Joel And the Team are Just so friendly helpful so Don’t Spend High Prices on your Morning coffee visiting Oscars cafe I highly Recommended.
J.
The prefect neighbourhood coffee shop everyone wishes they lived near. Breakfasts, brunch and lunch. Oh and great coffee.
D. M.
We have coffee and cake here, the coffee could a little hotter.
K. L.
Great coffee and cake. Beautiful garden out the back. We took our buggy and staff helped us to carry it down the couple of stairs so that we could sit in the area next to the garden. Toilet clean and they have made the most of the small space with a clever fold down changing table outside the toilet. Staff were 5 stars- super helpful and friendly
H. J.
Amazing coffee and lovely staff. They really know their stuff and will take the time to chat. You can hear how passionate they are without being at all preachy. Garden is lovely and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. Music is great too.
K. H.
Delicious coffee and an even more delicious freshly baked cinnamon bun. This little place will become a regular spot since moving to the area.
J. L.
Unusually good service, great coffee, and lovely baked goods. The kind of place that values good coffee, and spoons foam into your macchiato rather than slinging a load of milk into it. Thanks!
J. M.
I’ve had to update my review as having been in a few times, the high tables are a bit of a problem. Not ideal for the dog and as I’m now pregnant, not ideal for me or my future baby. Lovely coffee and lovely owners but bring back the normal tables and chairs!
Such an improvement on the old Oscars - seating is more comfortable, quality of food/coffee is much better and the owners are so friendly! Great to see young business owners popping up in Ladywell and bringing a good happy mood with it :)
C. S.
The coffee is excellent, by far the best in the area, but it really does feel a little cold and bare since the redesign. Staff and garden are lovely and would definitely come for an espresso in summer. Sadly, while the food is good, is it too expensive, and the portions outrageously austere for fare with such basic ingredients (£8 for artisanal beans on a single slice of a sourdough loaf of unremarkable girth). I miss the old Oscars.
A. F.
Wonderful coffee and the cakes...incredible! Visit on the weekend early and you might even get there in time to bag a cinnamon bun, which really absolutely must be tried to be believed. Friendly staff and such a great addition to the Ladywell community. 💜
R. D.
I thought that my choice of falafel salad would at least be the the more interesting of the options. In fact it turned out to be absolutely delicious.
N. R.
Nice cafe but there aren't enough vegan options
D. L.
The brownie is delicious as well as the American-style cinnamon bun. Plus they don’t take the mickey to charge extra for alternative milk which I think is very welcoming and fair.
N. C.
Great coffee with good options of alternative milks (at no additional cost: thank you!). Staff is super friendly and even care to check how dark you want your cortado. Has a lovely garden at the back, too.
E. M.
Sometimes Change Is Good
Visited Cafe Oscar's for the first time since it has changed owners and had a new lease of life. Have to say it is a breath of fresh air while almost paying homage to the life before. Beautiful fresh food and a smooth coffee. I was lucky enough to go in on a Saturday when they have the most amazing cinnamon buns baked fresh and I got the last one. To die for. Get in early, they go quick. Only teeny, tiny thing, I would have loved the choice of a bacon or chicken sandwich/panini etc. Just some meat somewhere. I get that's the new direction but I need something substantial but that's my personal preference.
This place certainly wins The Oscar......
C. P.
Nice cafe, but a rip-off. No matter how much avocado and special ingredients you add to that sourdough, it's just a slice of bread with fruit and vegetables on it served in Ladywell, Lewisham, not on top of the Eiffel Tower. Add a second slice to it and everyone will be much happier! big hug
J. L.
What a gem of a place in South London! FANTASTIC coffee, superb service, delicious cakes, croissants, and breakfast. There is also a super cozy back garden ideal for small children or to switch off from life while sipping the delicious coffee.
p. g.
A Lovely cafe with a great atmosphere. The quaint decoration makes the cafe cosy and friendly. Their coffee is very good and one of the rare occasions where its OK to drink it black. Their cakes are homemade and lovely with a regular change of choice. we are always made to feel welcome when we go and is a great place to sit and catch up with friends.
B. V.
Cafe Oscars is an artisan coffee shop serving a range of light meals and baked goods.
Excellent, dark roast coffee with a choice of dairy alternatives (pea protein, oat, soya and almond). Hot chocolate and teas also available.
Very good cinnamon buns.
Garden area is relatively large and pleasantly peaceful.
Card only payments.
Small step into shop, and short flight of steps with rail down to garden, toilet and additional seating.
LGBT friendly. Dog friendly.
Unisex toilet with baby changing facilities. Not accessible.
Friendly staff.
EDIT:
THIS CAFE IS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT, AND IS QUITE DIFFERENT. Review above
Nice cafe with a pretty little garden. Very kid friendly which you may or may not see as a good thing. Not very good coffee. Pretty good food, friendly, cosy. A little bit on the expensive side.
J.
Great little cafe, a great improvement since being renovated by the new owners.
Friendly service great coffee, cakes and the snacks. Only negative I can think of is that they don't have wifi, considering how bad the reception is in the area, this should be addressed (this is the only reason I removed a star).
O. M.
Oscars is under new management & have even changed the counter just incase you didn't notice that! This change for me is all good. They have gotten serious about their coffee (although for the life of me I can't remember if they are using the wonderful Volcano or not - either way it was a good brand)....and know how to make it well. Not sure if there was filter options but it looks like the kinda place that will add it later if not.
So there is still the great kitchen and food is really well made and presented. I had some lentil soup which was delish but if I was being critical the bread slices were a bit stingy. Other food options looked good and I think they have maintained the juicer for those smoothies Oscars had been famous for.
Decor outside still the same, looking a bit tired but you get the impression these guys are biding their time, getting one thing right at a time. Good going dudes! 🤜The good people of Ladywell salute your dedication!! 🖖
N. B.
Been here a few times and they always have a good selection of cakes on offer. Great that they usually have gluten free and vegan options which are also tasty. Lovely friendly staff and a nice garden to relax in in warm weather.
J. S.
Friendly service, nice coffee and a range of good sweet and savoury food options!
S. C.
It is the best coffee ever tried and better don't tell about the hot chocolate with two shots of coffee on it!! TERRIFIC.
Thanks a lot :D
N. B.
People need to learn how to use star ratings. 1/5 because you don't like modern "hipster" decor is a bit miserable.
Personally I think the interior looks great (it definitely stands out amongst the options in this area), the food is great and the coffee is good too - they even have Oatly barista edition, which is spot on. We need more like this, keep doing what you're doing :)
S. A.
Superb coffee, great bread & pastries. Fabulous staff & service everytime !
D. L.
Great coffee spot - would recommend!
J. M.
Great little place, excellent music and atmosphere, vibes galore! Perfect spot to sit and read, meet friends, watch the world go by etc. Top notch coffee too. Best enjoyed in the subtropical garden for maximum exotic effect!
J. L.
My Mum and I popped in the week for lunch and cake, whilst the food was lovely: quiche and bacon and avocado toastie, coffee cake and almond cake - please try and get some decent chairs. Every chair and table we tried to sit at was rickety or uncomfortable. I appreciate the mish mashed vintage style idea but frankly all the tables and chairs need replacing as it looked very scruffy. Although vintage cups are nice - not when they've got cracks in them when I politely asked for a mug instead the waitress came and plonked it very loudly on the table. Not sure if we'll be back as it was uncomfortable - I think I'll be getting cake to go!
E. K.
Lovely coffee, a little over the normal price for the area. Pastries and cakes looked great
J. W.
Oscars has recently changed hands and has been refurbished which may not be to everyone's taste. At least they have kept the lovely Gustav Klimt painting. Great coffee and friendly staff. They also have changed their opening times. Open weekday mornings and weekends now. Yes, gone are the cakes but if you want cake then there is Le Delice two doors down 😀.
Edit: Oct 2019. We arrived shortly before closing at 4:20pm and were given a less than friendly welcome. It's a shame as this cafe had promise. Off to La Delice...
M. F.
Quality baking, even makes 'free from...' stuff appealing. Plus, even if you don't like the food - there is still entertainment in the forms of Easter eggs (the gaming kind) and "jokes" by the manager (the bald one, not the scary Italian). Don't come here if you want a full English- though you could spread the contents of your panini across your plate and simulate the experience. Don't come when it's shut, you won't get served
A. S.
Delicious home made cakes made fresh! Nice little garden area to enjoy too with some rabbits and decent lunch options
S. C.
Stopped in this cafe for the first time today (never noticed it before and I walk past it every day!). Coffee was superb and the custom panini roll thing they made for me was brill. Also pomegranate salad? Amazeballs. There were even 2 rabbits in the garden. The only flaw I could see was the man serving looked a bit sweaty. Maybe overworked? But not something that would make me drop a star. Will deffo be back!
s. t.
lovely chai latte and mushroom pastry roll. and friendly staff.
Z. S.
Lovely cafe with tasty pastry and assembly coffee :)
H. I.
Just had a delicious and generous slice of mulled apple cake and a coffee, the staff at Oscars are always warm and friendly and the atmosphere is calm, definitely my favourite cafe in the area 💖
T. F.
Nice and cozy local coffee shop. It's very convenient for me because I pass by it every day and just can't resist to stop and get a cup of steaming latte. I also eat there whenever I have the time.
P. C.
It's boom time in SE4 and SE13 for independent cafes. For quality of coffee alone, not including it's super friendly service, the creme de la creme is Oscars Cafe in Ladywell.
H. P.
Best coffee in the postcode, fabulous and interesting cakes freshly baked on-site, loads of options for vegetarians/vegans, a couple of rabbits in the garden AND super friendly staff - my favourite cafe!
J. T.
