Reviews of Rochelle Canteen - East Shoreditch
A. T.
Dined here on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was busy! Very nice environment. Ordered quail to start, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Also ordered rabbit saddle as a main. Didn’t look so good on the plate so didn’t take a picture. It was a bit dry. All the sides were good.
J. C.
A lovely dinner! I was in a group of 4, which allowed us to try several of the smaller plates and both the evening's specials, plus most of the desserts! We enjoyed everything. One evening special, the Dover sole for two, easily served us all and was the superstar dish in terms of presentation. Get an early res or the specials may be gone.
Order extra bread to sop up any sauces!
Great service, amazing ambiance. Highly recommended!
A. G.
Nice little hidden gem , lovely garden in thr heart of Shoreditch ( like a secret escape)
Service was very good
Food was nice but a bit overpriced in some dishes ( can’t charge £17 for ready filo spinach pie - if they made their own , it would be more justified)
Would come again though and def I recommend to visit.
Bloody Mary wasn’t good , very watery ( maybe change the ice )
J.
Simple but really delicious and good quality food. Nice garden setting and tables far enough that there is some level of privacy and you don't talk over each other. Recommended!
P. C.
We had dinner here and absolutely loved it. We had Osso Buco Risotto for our mains which was fabulous, great wine list, excellent service and all set in a garden oasis. Highly Recommended.
S. K.
Unassuming yet amazing little spot off the beaten path. Fantastic wine selection. The skate was perfectly cooked, and super simple. Loved the side of buttered cabbage too.

One of my favourite restaurants in London. Situated in a converted bike shed of an old school that has now been divided up as a creative space for small businesses. The outdoor seating area is something out of a fairy tale, the school garden is well kept and boasts lovley trees and plants. They have now implemented a permanent green house structure, which means shelter from bad weather or a lovley setting to enjoy the sun.
The food is sensational, a real pallette pleaser. The chefs compose such unique but well executed dishes. The menu changes from time to time, often with retaining a classic or two. I have had the pleasure of visiting here more than a dozen times and already received the same consistency of service and culinary excellence (the place should have a michelin start at least). Rochelle Canteen will always have a special place.

Such a fantastic restaurant! I've lived in London my whole life and would never have known about this hidden gem behind the gate. We went for lunch and it was super cosy and welcoming. Awesome location, beautiful vibe, great service and fantastic food. A simple but carefully curated menu - only downside was that we didn't have room for pudding! Would highly recommend.

Hidden gem for simple yet elegantly elevated British cuisine featuring seasonal, fresh local ingredients. They have somewhat crowded indoor seating and a lovely courtyard when the weather is nice. It’s relatively pricy for what it offers and the service is hit or miss.
J. H.
What is there to say, small place, few tables, amazing time. The two go hand in hand.
Sat in that room you have the opportunity to experience the kitchen and everyone else enjoying the food alongside you. What great British wholesome dishes.
From lamb, squash, green sauce to a beef pie with suet crust this place is a treasure trove of wonderful dishes that will not only leave you feeling full but also wholesome and happy.
The last time I was there I had the pear crumble as a special and my god it was insane.
I always can’t wait to come back.
Thank you Rochelle (you guys are the best)

Was invited here by someone who had been told to go here and I think that's the only way you'll ever find out about it!
It's way off the beaten track in London as it sits in a very residential area and it's entrance takes some finding if you've not been forewarned because it says in the playground of a victorian school
Everything is extremely fresh, so the menu changes every day, depending on what ingredients they have.
I had monkfish with a side order of cabbage and new potatoes and it was wonderful, extremely tasty and something I'd definitely have again - if its on the menu next time!
The service was great and despite it being a chilly day, the clear marquee was very warm
This is a great find for anyone looking for somewhere unique to eat
E. D.
Delicious food, fantastic setting with friendly service!
K. T.
Very nice hidden restaurant with simple but original menu. The food was just great, we tried almost everything and all of it was on spot in terms of flavour and portion size.
Great atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. The only downside was the waiting time. But I will always be happy to come back.
A. S.
As always, amazing food and service. This is the first time I’ve been since they extended the outside, we sat in the heated tented area which was lovely! We tried almost all the starters - chicken liver parfait, cubreen, roast bitter leaves with blood orange, poached salt cod - I had the harissa aubergine with flatbread as a main. All excellent.
A. L.
A delightful lunch experience, going through the gate feels like entering a secret garden.
The service was somewhat clueless (apparently we did not have a waiter assigned to our table and we had to basically direct our own service), but the fresh and light food more than makes up for it.
Top notes for a daikon/fennel salad, flatbread with goat curd and confit garlic, and for the chicken liver mousse on toast.
S. A.
Very cozy
Delicious, clean food
A. K.
This place is an absolute gem - never had a bad experience. Order all the food, and make sure you leave room for dessert.
R. C.
Very beautiful setting. Food was okay (my expectations were probably too high!)
M. B.
Great atmosphere and beautifully made healthy food!
J.
Best modern british I had for a long long time, amazing service too, very friendy and good recommendation for menu
M. G.
The food was superb and the staff are friendly and professional. Lovely ambiance outdoors.
N.
Beautiful restaurant in a private garden in the heart of Shoreditch. You've got to press a buzzer/bell to enter this playground of an old schoolyard (now apartments). Love all the home made touches in the menu. Although the menu is simple, everything we had was delicious and seasonal. Service was also very friendly.
H. S.
A magical place on a nice evening. Great food and service. Do be aware you can only sit outside until a certain time (9pm, I think), and it can get quite warm inside on a hot day, so perfect for lunch or an early dinner. Also note they are only open at night from Thu-Sat. Some reviews say they are BYO, but they now have an alcohol licence.
m.
Finally went to Rochelle Canteen before lockdown! Great food and delicious wine. Service was good too. Favourite was the beef stew though recommend not havng bread beforehand to fully enjoy! Good for a date or 1-1 catch up, not so good for groups given small space.
Tables were pretty close to each other and shared so suspect some changes will have to be done post covid.
K. R.
Perfect place for a brunch on a sunny day!
R. S.
Enjoyed an exceptionally cosy lunch here for my birthday. The restaurant itself has a nice simple decor and staff are very friendly and accommodating. Food as expected was delicious.....only wish I could try more on the menu. Only thing I would say is I wish they had w better wine selection. Accepted amex....another plus point.
L. P. T.
Got the short straw with the service. Got quite scared by the maitre d' who was extremely sour - as if my presence offended her. Rest of the service - thankfully ended with a really nice and genuine guy who actually treated us like paying customers.
The food - tried really hard to justify it. The only star of the dinner was the Ginger Loaf - that was inspiring and made me feel less guilty for treating myself to this dinner. The rest was unfortunately not something I would remember positively. Starter - the flatbread was an insult (rabbit was fine). The john dory was not well respected. The mutton was too precious - if it is mutton, make it sing with mutton as mutton should be hearty and celebrated for its age. Not some delicate 4 piece thing.
Noticed next table where they left half a brill piece uneaten. Shame on them.
J. W.
Great place, superb menu, highly recommended
L. Z.
Delicious and great variety, I loved the vegan and seafood options
l. l.
The place is incredible stunning, you can feel far from the city.
Food very simple and delicious.
Highly recommended.
M. S.
Fantastic restaurant, probably one of the best in London. Creative menu that keeps respects the integrity of the ingredients
S. P.
It might not be for everyone (and certainly doesn't market itself for everyone) but definitely worth the experience. The food is top notch, the service is on point and the setting is wonderfully well kept.
L. H.
Fantastic find tucked away in gorgeous old school buildings. Tightly packed tables reflect how popular this place is - so expect to share if you’re a small group. It was extremely loud - but totally worth it for the food. Great menu and chef.
J. S.
Good food and a pretty setting. You might end up with some strangers sharing your tiny table, but that can be fun sometimes.
a. v. e.
Came highly recommended by a friend and she was right: the restaurant is situated in the garden of a former school that has been converted into apartments/ offices. We were lucky, it was a super sunny day so could sit outside and enjoy our lunch in the sunshine. The menu changes regularly, and service really friendly and professional.
D. W.
Great food. Ordered the roast partridge on my visit. Tasted really good. Unfortunately I think the cutlery needs a little improving. The knife just wouldn't cut into the meat. Had to really work to eat my food. But would definitely visit again. ;)
M. P.
Refined but simple dishes in a hidden little restaurant. The food is lovely, but the proximity to the kitchen calls for a better ventilation system.
A. B.
A peaceful, peaceful little gem. The staff were super and very kind to us. Sunny garden with grapevines, secluded and quiet. Pudding was my fave bit.
R. F.
Wholesome dishes of unique flavour combinations and fresh ingredients. Really friendly staff, small dining space with communal tables.
J. M.
Surprised at the comments about the service. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is very relaxed in a beautiful setting. We sat outside under the grape vines. Our waitress was very helpful and gave good advice about the menu.
D. B.
A really nice restaurant, in a really cute location and great food, but service could be more attentive
A. M.
Excellent , excellent, excellence..... if you are around here in the summer there is not other options...... look@the food!!
m. l.
Outstanding food, outstanding service and location. This is place is a little gem in the heart of shoreditch.
R. B.
This is one of these places where you immediately know that there will be a surcharge for trendiness. This usually includes a friendly, but not vocationally trained wait staff, and - as is the fashion - an open kitchen with all the accompanying noise and steam and terrible accoustics. And that's exactly what you get in the very small Rochelle Canteen. The food was definitely edible, if not exactly haute cuisine, and there was a slight amateurish feel to the whole setup -- which is not really what their prices would suggest. And then my pet peeve: adding a mandatory 12,5 percent tip to the bill instead of just including it in the price, which of course happens to be in violation of consumer law. But then just about every restaurant in London does that
K. T.
Great little cafe with the best coffee we've had!
R. G.
One of the best restaurants in London for my money. Wonderful, understated food in a beautiful environment. How this place isn't impossible to get a table at I'll never understand.
r. a.
What a beautiful Gem in the middle of the busy Bricklane / Shoredicht area.
Service was impeccable and the English inspiration menu was good. Perfect for the season, cosy and warm
R. C.
Great setting, very secluded and perfect when the sun is out. The food is pretty good too.
E.
If they have pie on offer, just get it. Love this place so much. A quiet haven in hectic Shoreditch.
N. A.
The place is really beautiful, especially the outdoor dining, but the food was quite disappointing. I had high expectation and was frustrated with the dishes. I live in London for years and maybe was one of the worst experiences in terms of food, unfortunately.
A. H.
Top class food, top class service and a delightfully calm environment in the midst of busy Shoreditch. Excellent modern European dishes. Highly recommended!
s. t.
good is great, service was ok, probably they were too busy so kinda rush us away.
V. T.
Hidden Sunday brunch restaurant. You can often meet editors from magazines and fashion people. It's bring your own bottle. The food to share is very good
O. R.
A serene and peaceful oasis away from the humdrum of Shoreditch. Unpretentious, simple yet delicious cooking that relies on high quality of the seasonal ingredients. Down to earth and friendly staff and very good value when compared to other comparable eateries nearby. Go on a sunny day if you can as it's a real treat, one of the most beautiful and calming outdoor spots in all of central London.
S. L. R.
Fantastic good food with great flavour! We will be back soon.
C. D.
Super cute ambiance and canteen in the courtyard, would come again!
O. O.
Amazing
L. W.
Lovely relaxing courtyard wine bar, with delicious food too. We shared a bottle of French Rosé, plus olives and fava bean mash with ciabatta. Very moreish.
It is easy to socially distance, the staff are careful, and do temperature spot checks.
R. G.
This restaurant was recommended to us by friends and we are very happy to recommend it to others visiting London. It is set in an old bike shed of a school building and is difficult to find as there are no boards to even suggest that there may be restaurant hidden behind those brick walls. However if you follow the directions as advised by google maps you will be fine. The service is excellent and staff are very friendly and helpful. The coffee is exceptional and the food is very earthy and wholesome. It is even more attractive as it is right in the heart of street art neighbourhood - real graffiti art. So take the time to walk around the neighbourhood after eating here and enjoy the excellent artworks on display on shutters; on walls and street corners. It is an unusual and truly remarkable experience. It is a small restaurant and so please make a booking.
M. R.
Hard to find. But very good foods. Lots of veggie options . Calm atmosphere. No music playing. Good coffee
S. H.
Great place to eat good food even with Covid restrictions.
The staff were great; friendly, professional and the right side of physcophantic.
I had a good time having a birthday lunch. I gave four stars as no one gets five; if you did, what would you have to aim for?
J. J.
One of the loveliest meals we've ever had. While the food is the star, the whole experience was so delightful. It was our first meal, in fact our first day, in London, and it set a terrific tone for our entire trip. It actually turned out to be a highlight. The food is fresh and delicious, and the vibe is just so good. Could not recommend higher. It seems off the beaten path for tourists but... GO!
V. M.
At first wasn’t sure that this place was a restaurant because it’s fairly hidden among residential areas, but don’t be fooled. The experience here was fantastic and if you are considering stopping by, please do.
Recomiendo esto a cualquier persona que esté buscando una experiencia poco tradicional y una comida exquisita.
F. K.
Phenomenal food, where the simplicity let’s the quality of their ingredients speak for themselves.
Set in a trendy, understated venue, which makes a welcome change from London’s over-decorated restaurants with poorly planned menus! Best to book well ahead of time & expect to share your table.
I. R.
Such an enjoyable experience ! The place feels enchanted with an amazing and suggestive backyard. We had drinks around the fire accompanied by live Christmas music. The conservatory where we had dinner was cosy and staff very friendly and helpful. Food was delicious; had a vegetarian meal and was positively surprised. My pumpkin with white beans was amazing!!
A. T.
We were looking for something other than pub food and the concierge suggested The Empress. The food was fresh, hot and delicious. The waiter was very nice and answered any questions we had, along with suggestions for things we might like. We had no idea about what to ask for, but the waiter suggested us different disses... all of them delicious! We will repeat when we are back in London again.
D. M.
Located in what feels like a secret garden, Margot Henderson & her team punch out delicious & honest food. Their fare is timeless, ingredient-driven, & seasonal - all before those words became cliches. A must visit if you are a true foodie.
T. R.
I don't want to tell anyone how good this place is incase too many people hear about it.
One of the best breakfasts I have had in a long time, and Ive eaten a lot. Perfect scrambled eggs on toast and lots of it. Their home made ketchup is wicked.
Awesome location. Awesome food. Service was OK
T. K.
Perfectly cooked and presented food, where vegetables are not an afterthought. Not faffy, not pretentious. I certainly hope to visit again.
A. F.
Lovely place, delicious food, the anchovy toast is a must.
P. R.
Wonderful setting. Friendly staff. Good food. A nice feel to the place
C. F.
Superb food and excellent hospitality. Jewel.
C. G.
Had an excellent lunch here. It's a little tricky to find (ring the buzzer and they'll let you into a hidden courtyard which the restaurant faces. But the food was first rate. Prices are a little higher than average in the area, especially for a lunch, but portions are generous and the service is very pleasant. Definitely worth the effort of getting to this place.
R. M.
Lovely location and an original menu. However, the staff seem indifferent and are not particularly friendly. When it came to paying for my food, my waitress didn't even offer the basic courtesy of asking how my food was, nor did she offer me a receipt. Definitely need to improve the quality of service.
B. M.
Lovely place, lovely food, lovely people. Thanks.x
C. J.
Wonderful menu, excellent service
J. T.
One of my favourite restaurants in London - well worth a visit. Location is perfect, down a little back street. Food is amazing and catered well for vegetarians.
L. J.
Nice restaurant, I think slightly overhyped, But really pleasant food, drinks and staff. In a secluded garden but did feel slightly like I was in a greenhouse
k. g.
I have eaten here countless times and my meal has never been anything other than faultless. Service is charming, and the food is simple, elegant and brilliant value. This is truly one of London's hidden gems. Anyone who has enjoyed a meal at 10 Greek Street or 40 Maltby Street recently should check this place out immediately. It's better than both of them. The only downside is that they're only open monday to friday for lunch!
S. G.
Rochelle Canteen is lovely place to grab a meal while the sun is out. Hidden away, it has a nice lawn while the seating is partially indoors and outdoors. Their menu changes daily apparently, but 2 out of the 3 dishes we ordered were really good. Definitely worth a visit.
J. B.
What a delight. Cool little place behind the wall, feels very secret. Felt very Copenhegan in style. The food was so good. One of fav east London spots.
E. T.
Fabulous joint hidden away in a school ground but very very close to shoreditch high street station. The atmosphere was fantastic with candlelight and the decor is simple and rustic.
Some presentation of the food are a bit hit and miss, for example snails look like an overgrown jungle of leaves, apple crumble and custard look even worse than when I had them back in school.
However, the service is amazing. We were given free gin and tonics on arrival (since they didn't have alcohol licence I suppose). And they were basically there whenever we needed something.
I enjoyed my food very much. The rest of my table ordered duck which tasted like it wasn't washed very well as it had an odour much like lamb... But my fish and veg was completely amazing. This probably explained why it was more expensive. Yes the apple crumble looked horrendous but the taste was not bad. After trying the rice pudding I would say give this a miss. Quail for stater is recommended.
Just a word of warning if you do come here when the weather outside is cold, yes the inside bit is warm and toasty and they try to get a fire going outside in a large can. However, you have to brave the elements outside to get to the bathroom as it is in a separate building.
E. H.
Amazing setting but was a little disappointed by the food as there weren’t a lot of vegetarian options. Such a shame!
E. T.
Amazing spot hidden away in Shoreditch. Lovely setting with an awesome food menu which is all really good quality. All the dishes we had were great. If you can catch it on a sunny day you get free use of their eclectic sun hats. Brilliant, non-wanky Shoreditch lunch spot.
B. B. S. (.
I spent such an amazing Sunday sunny afternoon at the Rochelle canteen with few friends. We ate in the beautiful cour garden. The food was lovely and the service and staff were perfect, the lovely and handsome Jonathan helped us with the menu and advised us some super tasteful mains. Place to be apparently as we were sitting next Marcia Gay Harden that was eating there too.
A. K.
I love this place. Great space, warm ambiance, friendly service and delicious food (menu changes daily based on fresh ingredients). They always make me feel like I'm at home.
C. B.
What a wonderful restaurant. I loved it.
T. M.
Expensive eg olives and bread all extra and side dishes £4.50 for smallish quantity.
Duck leg dish not special but dessert was.
Very good service but not sure will go back as not good value for money.
M. S.
Unique and lovely place hidden away. Food is great though not transcendent. Service is solid. The ambiance is tastefully simple, but it gets very loud.
F. F.
hidden Gem in the heart of Shoreditch for sure! the food here is of good quality and portion sizes are great. great spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of London, booking recommended, will definitely be back!
D. D.
After a terrible first experience, I tried Rochelle's Canteen once again and I am very very glad I did. The food is simple yet very delicious, the ingredients fresh, the restaurant is beautiful and secluded surrounded by a very cute garden. I strongly recommend it
s. a.
Rather good food, charming location, dogs well come. On a nice sunny day, it is a pleasure to eat outside. Inside it feels too small and crowded.
Price in line with Shoreditch: just to give an example: 3 (good) grilled sardines with dollops of (bad) salsa verde @ £ 8.50
Good bread from St John's. Tap water; no linens and paper napkins
However we found the service too casual ("Hi guys...." place), inefficient (plates arriving at different times, even if it was pretty clear they could have been sent out at the same time/delivering food to the wrong table) and a little smug ("u are lucky to be eating here" sort of feel...) - all this at 12.5% service charge. (ps: the food is good and it is clear there are some thinking minds in the kitchen but it is not by all means "food that sings" )
R. M.
Exceptional, clean and perfectly cooked food
A. P.
Lovely food, great atmosphere. Only slight downer was the lack of choice of beers.
C. H.
Hidden gem for lunch. Bring your own alcohol.
R. P.
Good place. Menu rotates so probably better to call to check for veggie options, weren't many when we went. But great concept and good food
R. S.
Arnold and Henderson are super hero’s for creating this shoreditch staple that has outlasted many others. Daytime place, with an ace but short menu is a must. This place is my worst kept secret, sings in the sunshine. Hidden in a secret garden in Hoxton opened by pressing eh buzzer to the door for the gardens of a former school in a square in hoxton, this place produces excellent food, delicious wines by the glass an all with a professional and attentive service in a laid back but buzzy atmosphere set in a stunning location. One of my London top 10s and a must for any visitor.... they now have a branch at the ICA, good food but lacks he magic of this one.
J. G.
Did t eat here, but really wanted to. Visiting a business customer in the same building the amazing smell of food every time I walked past was very tempting.
Nice quiet area
T. “. J.
Delicious food, great setting unique menu and feel.

Great Restaurant , we went there yesterday , had the Puntarella & Anchovy and the Rabbit, Wild Mushrooms & Barley and it was delicious ! Service was very good as well.
Recommended !
L. C.
The place is really cute and staff is friendly but my food was really boring and a bit expensive for what I got.... maybe I did t ordered the best dishes so may give it another chance and try something else...
V. M.
This place is just so cool! Everything is delicious and it's not actually very expensive! It's perfect. The staff are really nice too.

Hidden restaurant in an old school in Shoreditch. Used to have great food, service and atmosphere, but has become complacent and is now considerably overpriced. Had the potential to go back to its former glory, but needs some focus from the owners.
M. A.
Only had the coffee but seen other people's dishes. It's a minimalist environment, I think this place is great. You can sit inside or outside.
F. W.
Buzzing little restaurant, very friendly staff and lovely sharing plates of food. Loved it.
E. G.
Great British food - interesting yet simple dishes. A beautiful dining room too. Great for a special occasion lunch.

Fab! In the grounds of an old school. We went for the great aunt's 75th. She taught there 50 years ago. Food was so good!!

Delicious wholesome freshly prepared seasonal food. Bit cold in the dining room in the winter weather so keep the jacket on but food is superb

A hidden gem. The food and service are outstanding. Don't forget to book a table.
F. P.
Food is very good. Staff super friendly. Minimal design and great atmosphere.
M. E.
Had heard great things and finally went - food was good and service non-existent as if they were bothered that we were there. Setting is the only interesting thing.
J. J. W.
amazing food and amazing atmosphere. really cool location that feels very special.
D. H. M. E.
One of my faves in London. Thank you Big Suze.
S. T.
Converted from the old School bike shed, Rochelle Canteen looks out onto the grassy playground and the trees of Arnold Circus. Whenever it's warm enough tables are set outside the Canteen for a peaceful sit in the sun.

(Translated) Pleasant site of the minimalist type, small and of modern letter although little wide and variable day by day, of those that are emerging now in London. Access is somewhat strange, because it requires calling a telephone at the entrance door of an old school, and in addition the professionals of the place do not seem to be very attentive to the process, so it gives the impression that we often have to insist (ourselves and several cases while we are there). The restaurant is in a small building in the middle of a pretty garden
The food is very good, with several stews that include a knuckle with a kind of green sauce, a cheek with mashed potatoes and a fish cake. Perhaps they could be accused of lack of variety, because everything is more or less on the same wavelength. But the truth is that all three things are a success
The service, as I have said, is a bit clueless, but they are nice and they comply well. Nor stand out here for the offer of beers, because there is only Timothy Taylor (Pale Ale but industrial) and the Italian Moretti (which here seems to be seen as a touch of modernity, but you see ...)
Most of the attendees (not so many, because it is a small space) are young people with a “Shoreditch profile”. The atmosphere is a bit "at home" and we like that. Of course, this is not a place to come to tell each other intimacies, because at several tables at least two couples or groups coexist, and it is easy to find out what the next one is talking about
I liked it a lot

A mí me gustó bastante

(Translated) I went to this place with a friend who lives in the area. The area is very pretty and the restaurant is small, but very nice. The choice of dishes is discreet, with 5 starters and 5 main dishes. Unfortunately, the choice for vegetarians is poor. The quality of the food is good, the service is fast and the staff are really nice and helpful. It is worth a visit! The reservation is absolutely recommended, given the 30 seats approximately.
