Reviews of Shepherdess BBQ Cafe
F. C.
Much different since last in there (before covid). Different owner, different staff, different feel about the place, different decor. Don't like change. However if I had never experienced the old Shepherdess I would have have been tempted to give 4 and a half
Stars because I enjoyed the meal, so in all fairness I have to give it 4.5
P. L.
Gives a new meaning to the phrase "Full English Breakfast" Used to visit the place a while back before the new owners took over. My reaction "What have I been missing all these years?" Everything on the plate was really well cooked, very very tasty, and plenty of it. The chips were crunchy, the sausage had a lovely tangy taste and the bacon lean, no sign of any fat. Had to wrap the toast up and take it home to eat later as I was really full up.

This is a really nice place to go for something to eat if you're in the area, it's clean, the staff are really nice and the food is top notch and very reasonably priced. I've been here a few times over the past few weeks and it's a real shame that I won't be visiting the area for the foreseeable future.

I had breakfast at this place every day during my London-trip - everything I tried was very delicious (mixed veg omlett, eggs benedict, builders breakfast)! Portions are huge, service is very fast, prices are good! Friendly staff&nice atmosphere!
T. B.
Arrived 06:40 Wednesday 23rd March 2022 not yet open. No signs of life. However it was open as advertised the two days following that. Food ok, price a fraction high, service good in my personal view.
C. S.
This place was so close to being 5 stars for me, good prices, big portions, the mixed veg omelette and fries was really delicious, the beef and onion pie was so so. Mocha was big and delicious too. A really nice casual old fashioned diner at a street junction. Took one star off because the waitress somehow couldn't really understand us, and also couldn't understand the kitchen because she told us they ran out of pie and then we cancelled it, but then they just serve it to us even though we already decided not to have it. One of the item we ordered never arrived too.
J. L.
Good food and portions !
Prices very reasonable, quick service.
Really like the deco, recommended!
C. L.
This is exactly the kind of cafe that I envision for nice weekend breakfasts. It’s absolutely perfect. The staff is so warm and friendly! The atmosphere is very homey. I don’t understand how the prices are more than fair. Surprisingly so even given that the food was so good. We ordered an omelette and the vegetarian breakfast and both were large portions, too. Even the coffee is on point. I have found my new favourite breakfast place.

You can have an authentic English breakfast at this place for a very good price! The real proteinic meal for the English builder and worker 💪🏻. I ordered the Builders breakfast 🍳 which was very good. When we went to the place there were mainly workers eating there, it was cool. I totally recommend!

Amazing food .. even more amazing hospitality and kind hearted people. I unfortunately was locked out of fob-secured flat for 2 hours waiting for a lock smith (who told me they’d be there in 25 minutes) whilst in 4% battery so was too panicked to leave the building. no car keys..nothing. Made my way here where the KINDEST member of staff got me a hot drink, I was LITERALLY shivering so he sat me by the heating and charged my phone so I could make some calls. Checking in with me and put his coat around me to warm me up! The purest act of human kindness for which I am so thankful. I can’t say you’ll be wrapped up in a jacket like me but definitely give them a go 💛💛
K. C.
Nice food and friendly staff would have got 5 stars but egg was over done
P. R.
Great atmosphere and solid cafe fry up food. The dream! What more could you want
J. S.
Excellent establishment. Food came so quickly considering it was very busy. Tasted great. Good prices. Can't fault it.
N. C.
Amazing place to have breakfast in. They give large portions and amazing bacon! Definitely coming back here next time
M. E.
Nice breakfast. Was told they had no vegan food but they clearly do, just don't realise it.
M. O.

Great food lovely staff good prices licence what more could you ask for?
P. T.
Wide range of menu item and reasonable prices. Quick service.
G. B.
Great friendly cafe. Very good breakfast menu. Everything from your traditional fry up to a Turkish breakfast. Good portions and the orange juice is freshly squeezed 👍
c. C.
Good service, it was clean and neat, meal was tasty and warm.
M. B.
Well priced. Ordered and served within 7mins. Staff friendly. Clean and tidy for a cafe. Recommended if your hungry.
J. M.
Just had a lovely mushroom omelette for breakfast, made with fresh mushrooms. Came with a beautifully fresh salad and a side of the most crunchiest chips I have had in a long time.
S. C.
Great service, excellent and plenty food, really good prices A+++++
E. S.
Breakfast was good and what you would expect. Service was slow and the waiter couldn't answer simple questions about the menu. Coffee arrived after our food and we received the wrong orders.
p. w.
I've had a breakfast here before which prompted me to take a detour to have another today. Very nice people and an excellent breakfast again
N. A.
Delicious and reasonable price. Lovely atmosphere. Recommend hugely!
T. D.
Only went in for a coffee to kill time while waiting for my appointment at Moorfields Eye hospital. It wasn't fancy, specialist, complicaredly-named coffee, but was one of the best l've had outside my home. Friendly service. I will make sure to make time for them again on my next hospital appointment.

The perfect breakfast !!

Shepherdess Café revitalized key facets of my life after an interesting ethanol-inflicted evening of shenanigans. I visited this truly special café, with the best company, on a sweltering Sunday in mid-July. Upon first impressions, the café was well-kept, clean and refreshingly expansive. We took a seat in the middle. I was desperately craving solace in sugar, so, being the walking saturated fat that I am, I ordered a full English breakfast, which arrived with four efficiently buttered slices of toast, and a tea that transported me back to the feeling of my first ever cuppa. I have to say, Shepherdess Café's fry up is one of the best I've ever had. Though it could be argued that my moments of malnourishment throughout my hounding hangover may have contributed to such deep affection of this farm, I remain convinced by their sustenance's substance. Heroes! These great human beings are going against the grain of gentrification, offering substantial parts of their menu for a modest price of under £8.50. Thank you, for moving me.
S. G.
Tasty greasy spoon caff with a few healthy bits.
Great view over the main road which looks lovely on a sunny day.
N. L.
Good quality cafe. Very reasonable prices for the area. Understandably popular. Changed management and refurbished during the pandemic. Still excellent. Free WiFi.
N. W.
You could call it a greasy spoon but it's not dirty. It's a traditional cafe that serves all day breakfast lunch and take away sandwiches. Sets you up for the day
R. C.
Good value breakfast, quickly served.
D. H.
Good food, reasonable prices, fast service. Great place, seems family run
J. G.
Not the cafe from the images. New management, still good value but the main guy is a bit rude to customers and way too bossy to the girls when under pressure. He only looks happy and polite when the restaurant is empty instead of the exact opposite...
K. H.
Loved it. Great breakfast
D. D.
Fantastic service and friendly staff. The food is served quickly and comes out piping hot. I've visited this cafe several time and all visits have been equally enjoyable. I can't wait for my next! If you're ever looking for somewhere to eat on Old Street, I'd recommend you pick the Shepherdess cafe every time.
C. S.
The new cafe is a big improvement on its earlier incarnation. Good solid English Breakfast and Hugh quality lunches.
C. N.
Nice Food
R. G.
Very nice traditional cafe, they serve up a lovely fry up.
D. G.
By far the best cafe I've ever been to. They are incredibly bunch of people with some proper characters behind the till. The prices are very reasonable, I often go for lunch here with friends and they are never stingy with the portions.
Would highly recommend their sandwiches and their pies. All freshly made and very tasty.
J. L.
Beautiful little cafe.excellent food well priced and friendly staff.
B. W.
Very welcoming. Quick and pleasant service even though very busy. Very nice scrambled egg on toast and lovely mug of tea. Very reasonable price. This place has a nice atmosphere. Free newspapers to read too.
Z. M.
This is a great place to eat. I often eat at the shepherdess for lunch with my team. Every person I have been with has commented how great the food is and the portion sizes are very good. Lunch times are very busy, but would much rather eat in a busy place than an empty place. Would highly recommend, by far the best casual place to eat in City road.
T. H.
Huge breakfast plates at a reasonable price. Friendly servers.
M. V.
Good option for a British café with all the standard options. Service is good. Food is also good. Surely returning.
s. s. c.
Great food at reasonable price and excellent service too. The staff is friendly and attentive.
More than willing to cater to customers’ requests.
Highly recommended for anyone who needs a good English breakfast in Shoreditch area, London.
A. R.
Well-lit cafe. Nowadays very busy with local construction workers from nearby sites, but very friendly and diverse.
Food is good - ordered the mixed grill special.
Black coffee is not, tasted like a newly bought coffee maker (plastic-y).
Staff is very friendly. Large menu, ask for what food they'd recommend if undecided.
C. J.
Never had a bad meal here, they have a high turnover so there's the odd mix up but the food is fresh and the ladies are always happy to correct anything.
Very friendly staff, treat them nice and they'll see you right.
M. B.
The food is good but the service was bad and was disappointing to find the prices were a lot more expensive than the website claimed, when I asked the waitress about the price difference she just looked at me stupid and asked what I want to order. They need to update the menu on the website.
A. P.
I visited this place on a early Saturday morning.
Staff was very friendly and the the ciabatta sandwich I have ordered was very tasty (although I didn't feel that much mozzarella in it). The place is quite expensive for its category of a diner but cleanliness, staff and good food makes it worth visiting.
A. K.
Amazing value! Very good 'working man's caff' (open 'til 4pm only) in an expensive location with inexpensive prices! Good range of variations of the (big) all-day breakfast; different dish-of-the-day available for lunch each day - with ridiculous (for England, possibly normal for America) portion sizes which for a moderate eater, are enough to take away half the dish for supper! Plenty of seating but you may queue at lunchtime as always busy with a wide circle of customers, from builders to eye surgeons. Across the road from Moorfield's eye hospital. Staff can be stretched at busy times and it's difficult to attract their attention but they are helpful; Christina, the manager, is an absolute character and incredibly friendly. Ditto, the chef. Many regulars: we've found a gem!
M. F.
Nice café.
Excellent bacon and avocado sandwich!
D. M.
The 3 Maria's that run this place are just the most fabulous characters. The food is great, always freshly prepared and huge portions, good value for money and a busy, bubbly atmosphere. Take away too! Love the Shepherdess.
B. O.
Good breakfast but expensive for a working man's cafe, because that's all it is
S. O.
One of the last "proper" Caffs in London. Great food and tea. Right on the edge of the city. Plenty of tables and staff are great. Worth travelling to if you want a great breakfast before you go the The Eagle Pub just around the corner; another delight.
S. u.
They've finally reopened with a nice new look and a good breakfast and lunch menu, also for takeaway. Good prices and great quality of food.
R.
Great place for a fry up, lovely clean café with friendly staff
S. C.
Visiting with my family from the US; we loved this place. A lively mix of construction workers, police officers and office workers. Good food, reasonable prices and very friendly staff. Had breakfast here 3 days in a row.
S. 1.
Great food and great service. Friendly staff that are willing to cater to your needs. Recommended if you're hungry and the prices are very reasonable too!
A. P.
Sitting on the corner of City Road and Shepherdess Walk, The Shepherdess offers hearty food and service reminiscent of traditional British cafes. It provides a sit down service or takeaway. It also offers free WiFi which can be unreliable at times. The only factor to consider is that at busy times and given the open kitchen, the entire place can smell of bacon. With the surrounding area changing it is a welcoming cozy place with wide tall windows, efficient services and a menu consisting of all day breakfast options, staples such as lasagna and a big choice of sandwiches.
The corner location and wide windows provide an airy feel to what is a relatively small floor place. It features 8 booth style tables next to the windows and three larger tables that accommodate up to eight people each. During the winter months the heaters are on all day providing a nice escape from the cold outside. Having ordered the porridge with honey and a side of bacon I was surprised by both the size of the portion and the quality. Considering the Pret down the road sells 300 grams of porridge for £3.50, the portion at The Shepherdess is well over 500 grams for the same price. I would suggest that the Builders Breakfast for 5.90 including eggs, bacon, sausage, chips and beans is their best selling item. The Shepherdess is a great option for those looking for a dinner \ cafe experience with large portions of hearty food and efficient friendly service.
K. D.
The food is fairly expensive for a greasy spoon. It's not bad, the wife does better breakfasts hung-over if that's a way to gauge it. Also, chips comes with EVERYTHING which is actually annoying.
Don't bother being vegetarian if your going to try and eat here.
M. M.
Definitely try one of their toasties. Perfect on those Saturdays you need some rejuvenation. The tuna toastie is my favorite. Had an omelette once, but the toasties are definitely what you want to order here.
T. P.
Great cafe with excellent omelettes. Big menu so something for everyone including vegetarians. WiFi and mobile charging points. Gets really busy but not so much as you can't grab a table.
K.
This is the best diner in london by far , cheap good large dishes of quality freshly prepared tasty food.Fast friendly service with great view out to the street while you eat watching london go about its business. Don't pass it up as it has a large menu to suit anyone and if it doesnt quite suit then you can build yourself with no fuss.
G. C.
Friendly staff and great menu selection.
Quick service
D. K.
Absolutely A+
SERVICE AND VERY CLEAN AND EFFICIENT STAFF , LOVELY MANNERS
WELL PREPARED AND PIPPING HOT LUNCHES, AND BEVERAGES
J. E.
Great little cafe and sandwich place, a tiny bit expensive but the quality is there. Always busy, which is a good sign, and portions are big. Also a draw for the celebrity crowd, Jamie Oliver is a regular.
G. S.
Been going to the Shepherdess Cafe for over 30 years on and off Nick, Cristina and the rest of the staff are amazing people. Great food and wonderful atmosphere. One of my favourite Cafe in London 👍
S. P.
Very friendly and lovely place to eat definitely will go back again
A. Z.
Good food and price.
A. B.
The breakfast is okay here, It is a typical greasy spoon, but too greasy for me, but not my preferred 1st choice around the area. But staff are nice and its got cute curtains.
Χ. Ν.
Shepherdess Café a good, old-fashioned, proper London caff.
One of a few genuinely local places that has survived this area's ghastly gentrification and which hasn't yet increased its prices to crazy levels just to fleece the influx of yeh-yeh suburban middle-classes who now swarm about the area calling themselves 'hipsters' (and who really do deserve to be shafted royally).
Instead Shepherdess Cafe offers familiar English café food, breakfasts and lunches for a reasonable price and with reasonable portions and it still attracts proper local people and not too many of these new Hoxton horrors.
You can still sit and hear cockneys talking to one another without having some grating media screech or the lengthy dialogues about property prices.
This a small haven just a stone's throw from the unpleasantness of the hipsters up the road.
The staff at Shepherdess Café are always friendly and attentive too and for the monent it's surprisingly good value for money.
Hopefully it will remain a local place for local people for a long time to come.
J. W.
Lovely food and big portions.
If ypu like the traditional caf/dinner look you will for sure love this place!!!
P. S. M.
Great choice of food and drinks.. service was excellent.

Fabulous. Traditional breakfast & lunch caffs don't come better than this. Spacious as well. Good grub and comfort, couldn't ask for more.
F. D.
Great diner. Proper Hoxton. So much nicer than chains.
R.
Cracking greasy spoon - the best I've ever been to. Amazing reputation, traditional interior. Can't beat it. Check out the back wall for photos of famous guests.
C. D.
Good selection of food and good prices, proper cup of tea! The main lady is a character and made it feel like I was back in East End cafe.
C. H.

A local cafe that has not lost its charm after the renovation. Try the liver.
Y. W.
Great greasy spoon. All day breakfasts. Awesome bacon. They even have a mobile phone charging station! Staff are quite boisterous and friendly too.
J. P.
Good choice of variants on the English breakfast, some including a substantial portion of chips, some just a few as a garnish!
Not as cheap as it used to be but still good value for an all day breakfast!
D. N.
Big, bright cafe. Traditional style with many variations on Fry-Up. Loads of charm, and sugar in everything. One to visit as an authentic remnant of times past on the City Road. Recommended.
