Reviews of Vanilla Black Coffee & Books

Great little place for breakfast, staff were really friendly and attentive and the food was very good. I would definitely recommend the autumn special! They make great eggs!
Y. K.
I recommend the Aztec spiced hot chocolate , it’s very nice. Food is decent as well, not bad but also not amazing , just simple things . The bacon they use is great though. It’s a nice little spot .
N. C.
Lovely staff and ambience. The food and the coffee were delicious - had the banana bread and it was a great surprise with fresh fruits and yogurt... Would definitely recommend.
M. T.
Such a lovely place, beautiful design and delicious food. When on sunny days make sure you enjoy ur time in the lovely garden. Thanks guys 😍
K. C.
My go-to brunch place - the poached eggs are always cooked to perfection. Amazing outdoor courtyard area as well. Friendly staff - you know a place is good when you dream about the food there. :-)
A. D.
Had brunch here! We got poached eggs on toast and it was absolutely delicious. Coffee was great, all the staff were friendly and helpful, and the place was very clean :) Great atmosphere, will definitely be returning - and taking another look at all their cookbooks for sale!

I just always go back for the toasties. Small but delicious menu of food, carefully prepared with fresh and local ingredients, even a little grocery market in front for when you need some special ingredients. I’ve yet to try their outdoor dining, but normally grab a takeaway toastie and eat it in the park. Service can be a little slow, especially if you’re just getting takeaway instead of stopping, but I don’t mind going for a quick walk and it’s usually ready by the time I’m back.

Undoubtedly the best cafe in the neighbourhood. Coffee is amazing, food is to die for and staff are fantastic! Forget the big coffee shop chains and make your way here
L. V.
One of my fav brunch spots is open again! Delicious, fresh and organic food. They make a mean coffee too. The service staff are so friendly and accommodating. Definitely worth a visit!

Stunning place for breakfast as a recommendation I would choose avocado an Benedict eggs on top

I think I missed it twice until I decided to try the 3rd time. Finally, I found this coffee shop among the rainbow houses and shops on Kennington Road, which has a very low-key sign board. But everything is worthwhile, because it is such a cheerful hidden gem. Ready to explore this lovely space with yellow coffee machine and yellow walls.

Category: Independent Coffee Shop + Bookshop
WIFI: Reliable and free to use (a code needed)
Seating: They have two floors and a lovely backyard. There are many communal tables, chairs and stools on the ground floor, which could accommodate 25-30 seats. And they labeled Laptop free zone so that the seats can be made most of. And on the basement, it is another small world, with fire place, couches, communal tables and chairs, and a shared library, it feels just like at home.
Charging Point: Yes.
Bathroom: Yes
Ambience: The interior design is minimalist and chic. I like the bright color they use inside, and the yellow coffee machine really attracts people's eyeball and matches very well with the yellow wall, which makes you think about the happy moment of sunny days. Although it is located on the main street, it is very quiet and a good place to get your work done. Surrounded by cookbooks, stationary, homeware, and gifts, if you just sit back and read a cookbook with a cup of coffee or their loose leaf tea, it also makes you a lovely day.
Staff Friendliness: Very smilery and friendly, fast customer service.
Cost:
Coffee £2.2-£3.5
Tea £2.75
Hot Chocolate £3.25
Smoothies £5.0

My Favourite coffee in london, made to perfection every single time!!!! Love it and all the staff, food its quite overpriced but apart from that amazing!

Probably won’t be returning here in a rush. Went with an 8 year old and the staff were disgusted by the request for milk with her herbal tea. While I totally get it, despite the staff finding the need to explain to me more than once that it is a herbal tea (I get it!) the inflexibility was somewhat off putting.
The wait for a seat also took ages, and then I had to clean up the area myself because everyone seemed too busy to serve us properly. Staff just seemed moody by every request.
Banana bread was nice, and coffee was well brewed. Just disliked the atmosphere too much to want to return.

The team at VB are the best 👌🏻 Even on a super busy Sunday morning brunch time, they take care of us and are always super bright and cheery.
Try the red velvet latte for a gorgeous treat. Sample some handmade cakes and deffo grab an avo on toast with gorgeous mixed mushrooms. 🥑🍳
Coffees from AllPress (awesome)... and you can take a bag home with you! Freshly ground, of course 😍 and the menu is delish to boot. My fave local place to brunch!

Super cute. I get a flat white and it’s always perfect. Top notch covid compliance, staff is always wearing masks. Nice to see!

Lovely cafe in kennington, with a super cute hidden away outside area and very nice breakfast food.
J. F.
Medium size coffee and lunch space. Food and drink are very good and the staff are friendly. During the weekends it can get very busy, to the point where you can't really move around the room.

Surprised by how tasty the beans on toast dish was. I came here with friends and was disappointed when I looked at the menu as I hoped for something very hearty (e.g. a full English), but nothing really tickled my fancy. I settled with the beans on toast and was pleasantly surprised. There was no places to sit inside which was unfortunate so sat outside instead. Also, the bathroom is very nice.
R. C.
Great coffee, cakes and food, and a lovely retail selection of books and nice things to buy!

One of my favourite cafes for brunch, lovely airy seating area and they do a brilliant coffee. I've been coming here for years, but the prices seem to be creeping up sadly; almost £20 for a coffee and one slice of toast, with some woodland mushrooms and one single poached egg.
M. T.
Great coffee, ethically sourced products, delicious healthy food. The team is always helpful and nice even when they are at capacity. Very careful with respecting Covid prevention measures. Have been going to VB for years and I respect the ethos and values on top of what meets the eye.

A tiny busy cafe with great soy milk brand (Happy happy soy boy!)
Open kitchen looks great, food was awesome!!! Soy latte absolutely too yummy 😋

This is a lovely wee cafe in Lambeth. I had the smoked salmon on toast which was delicious and generously portioned. They have an outside seating area for those sunny days!

Perfect place for breakfast. They make delicious toasts and eggs. The interior is very interesting. You can find interesting books about cooking and culinary London. My favorite place in Lambeth.

Went on a Monday morning. As a local, we have been exploring whats in our local and a cafe to grab coffees and breakfast regularly. The coffee was great, pastries were lovely. But very disappointed with the service. I kindly explained to the casher that i couldnt hear well coz of the hearing loss issue… she seemed very unpleasant to repeat herself few times.. i was embarrassed and uncomfortable despite there was only one customer awaiting behind me. When i tried to scan a royalty QR code, she just called ‘Next!’ Without letting me to sort myself out which only took a literally 10sec. The customer behind, told me ‘’it’s ok and take your time…’’ was very unpleasant to be in a situation first thing in the morning… hope the customer service improves..

A Nordic flatpack sensibility pervades a bright and inviting interior with a dabble of books, cards and bits ‘n bobs adding texture and tone.
A limited selection of lite-bites, pastries et al pander to the au-courant without traipsing into unfamiliar territory.
Coffee here is dependable.
This is a positive review.
Y.
Tried an oatmilk latte which was absolutely delicious. Can't wait to try the food next time! The atmosphere inside is very nice and they even have an outdoor area at the back which is perfect to get away from the noise and relax. Highly recommend the coffee!
A.
Love this place but coffee prices are crazy, even for London standards.
V. M.
Food was great but a bit disappointing at the end when the waitress put the bill on out table without us asking- polite way to let us know that we should go.
A. C.
Small but tasty selection, super fresh food, friendly environment. Quiet but lively. A bit costly, but worth it for the quality.
S. N.
Favourite coffee in Kennington, service always great, felt really safe during all of COVID. Ate in for brunch once and the food was great too, the outside seating is so nice.
C. P.
One of my personal favourites in London. Great coffee and breakfast options. Staff always friendly and generally a great place to get some work done with a nice little garden in the back.
N. L.
Cosy little cafe, that serves delicious coffee. It's a sleek, modern cafe that is perfect for both a quiet cup of coffee and a catch up with friends. Would definitely be coming here more often.
B. T.
I love this place, and I was incredibly glad when they reopened after lockdown. In the before times they were a lively local cafe and bookshop, with a really excellent hidden courtyard seating area out back.
They've managed to retain that while also introducing Covid-safe measures, and it feels safe but still friendly - not always an easy balance to strike. They also do great food, coffee beans, and coffee-making equipment.
M. B.
We came here for brunch after a meeting at the American Embassy and it was fantastic. The staff were super friendly and sorted a small order mixup quickly and efficiently and were lovely throughout. I had a breakfast smoothie (espresso, banana, oats and almond milk) which was fantastic and had really good consistency. My partner had smashed avo on sourdough with mushrooms which was also great, with generous helpings of smooth, creamy avocado and chunky-cut mushrooms cooked and seasoned to perfection. She also had a coffee which was very good, and the table water even came with grapefruit in, which was a nice touch. We sat in the courtyard outside which is a lovely spot, and we'd be glad to come back again!
J. M.
A truly amazing coffee shop! The shop is an old converted library and the new owners have kept the books for coffee goes to read while sipping on their favourite. The staff are very friendly. They serve an assortment of baked goods as well as some delicious food! One can not go wrong by stopping past.
M. N.
This is a lovely café, good coffee and calm and chilled environment. Other then on Saturday mornings that is packed with families it's a lovely place to come. The staff are friendly and will remember you if you become a regular. Also have witnessed several conversations with older citizens which is lovely to see how the team at Vanilla Black makes them comfortable. Their menu also changed and now has choices and variety for all dietary needs which is refreshing to see. All and all a great place to visit. Try the cakes they are really lovely and home made.
A. H.
Ideal brunch/coffee spot. Lovely layout and good selection of books and gifts. We went on Sunday morning and it was very busy but staff were efficient, friendly and wait for food wasn't too long. Good selection and vegan options available. Would recommend the toasted banana bread...DIVINE!
E. P.
Hands down one of the best healthy breakfasts I have ever had and it was so so good. There was no skimping on taste here. I looked them up on Google just like all of you and read a about 3 reviews, looked at about 4 pictures and looked at how many awesome reviews they had and decided to give it a go.
Super friendly people. The coffee was superb. My order was the salad on the brunch menu, but I added bacon and an extra egg. Oh my goodness, I felt like it tasted like heaven. I highly recommend it just the way I ordered it. Really filling and gave me an excellent start to my day. I also had a cortado and a pour over Colombian, but they called it something else. I am writing this review on my laptop, so I will have to add pictures later. I will make a concentrated effort to get to Vanilla Black Coffee and Books the in Kennington.
Oh and the bathroom was super clean! Always a good sign of how clean the kitchen is. FIVE stars! Loved it.
K. H.
Friendly staff and a good range of coffee surrounded by books. 😙👌🏽
P. A.
Lovely seating room downstairs with fire place, couch and a shared library it is very cosy on a cold winter day. I found it very romantic in a way. The food was magical I had avocado on toast. The staff are just as warm as the cafe. I noticed an outside seating area definitely going back to sit outside it atmosphere looked cute
O. C.
Overpriced sandwiches and very poor service. I was waiting for 20 minutes before getting noticed. And then another 8 till a second waiter "discovered" me again. With so much lovely old and new places around, I know, this one won't be my choice again.
R. P.
So great to see this place back in action again post-lockdown. The extra measures put in place (use of masks by both staff and customers getting takeaway), and the café's new set up are exemplary.
AND there's great coffee and avo toast (a shining recommendation given how picky my Aussie taste buds are when it comes to coffee!!) - what's not to love??
H. P.
Beautiful, friendly and tasty! We both had a brunch and it was one of the best I've had in London. I asked for well done bacon and feta on avocado toast and my friend had white bean and pesto on toast.
V. F.
It's better inside than it looks outside 😀😀 give them chance.
L. S.
Excellent coffee with a good selection of dairy free milk and great choice of vegan options on the menu. Cute little courtyard out the back and interesting cookery books for purchase inside. It's my afternoon treat cafe when I'm working remotely. The WiFi is good and the service is welcoming and friendly.
F. J.
This restaurant is very popular thus always busy. The step in and out the door could be made safer for the customers. You pay the price for organic food. The staff can get a bit overwhelmed with the demand thus dropping the polite smiley faces.
It is one of our locals we do like going here.
N. W.
Always a delight to visit. Never once had a problem. Professional and friendly staff serving delicious food and great coffee.
R. C. (.
The food is pretty good and I’ve also had some nice hot coffees there, not sure they know how to properly make iced coffees though, the iced latte I got there was absolutely horrible and totally bitter. Other than that they seem pretty good, if a bit overpriced. Also, they have wifi and ample seating!
P. D.
Cosy little neighbourhood coffee shop, with friendly staff, tasty brunch and lunch options, a broad coffee and drinks menu.
The coffee shop is ideal for getting work done but there are only a few power outlets in the upstairs area (there's additional space downstairs with more plugs when it's open), and the bar space in the window doesn't make for the most comfortable seating arrangement.
The gem of this place has to be the hidden courtyard around the back. Beautiful old terrace buildings, flowers, and plenty of sunshine ☀️
J. S.
Used to visit this place more often when livid around but everytime I am in the neighbourhood I have to stop by.
Love the cozy interiors, specially the room downstairs (if you lucky to get place by the “fire” - my favourite) and the outdoor with the cute yellow chairs for when the sun shines.
Delicious food selection (one of the best avocado toast, great with chorizo), great variety of pastries and superb coffee.
Friendly and hardworking staff.
Best wishes.
K. S.
Lovely coffee, really wonderful food and the little garden area round the back makes this place one of my local favourites. All the staff are very helpful and friendly too!
N. B.
As a firm lover of that little bean known as coffee I have to start this review with the care the baristas take in making a good, well rounded coffee (your cortados are among my favourites throughout London!) But what truly makes this little cafe on Kennington Road so great is the familiarity; they know their regulars by name, get the orders going before you even get to the paying, have friendly chatter and are always delighting me with culinary surprises. What this little cafe lacks in quantity of choice (although there are a fair few varied options in my opinion) they truly make up for in quality.
And for those vegans wanting to venture in... don't let other reviews put you off! Most all their dishes can be made vegan to cater to your needs, if you can forgive that the menu is small... it will definitely be worth it.
Thanks VB team for making my frequent visits consistently great.
S. S.
The food is wonderful. They kept us going through lockdown with the wonderful toasties. And the staff are always unbelievably friendly.
H. T.
Nice spot for a quick lunch. Only been a couple of times, with babies. It's a small space so not ideal for lots of buggies. However, very good options to eat with one hand!
E. Y.
Great coffee, friendly staff, EXCELLENT music, free WiFi. All you need!
a. m.
I have been visiting Vanilla Black since it opened. They have never failed to be smiley, play nice tunes, serve great food and keep the cafe nice and clean. It's a top spot when you are in Kennington. I would give it an extra star if Google reviews allowed it. Keep it up.
M. Q.
The best coffee, the best food, the best service in Kennington!
J. S.
It was relatively Vanilla. I had avocado on toast with halloumi and a latte. The food was nice but no salt or pepper was brought to the table. The books were just cookbooks and the coffee was very over priced.
The tables were cramped and there was not really enough space.
A. K.
Not sure what coffee beans this cafe is using, but hands down one of the best Cappuccinos I've had in a long time! The white chocolate and raspberry brownie is pretty amazing as well. Definitely will be back!
S. M.
Sweet neighbourhood spot in Kennington, lovely for a simple weekend brunch, pastry break, or anytime coffee escape. Simple and nondescript on the outside but with a light and bright interior and courtyard in the back for warmer days. The 'kitchen' can get a bit overwhelmed on weekend mornings and we had to wait an hour for our food. However, when it arrived it was fresh and delicious and we were offered coffee on the house to make up for the delay.
K. H.
Yummy food, coffee and a lovely outdoor seating area! Good selection of options on the menu
R. A.
Simply brilliant. Had the most delicious coconut flat white today. And the food is just right. Three lovely spaces (upstairs, downstairs and outside) so there is always space for a natter with a pal, to catch up on some emails or to write a letter (incidentally they sell lovely greetings cards, cook books and things for kids too!)
T. S.
Gorgeous food and great coffee. Lovely staff who always make you feel welcome. There is also a quiet outside area in the courtyard at the back away from the road to enjoy.
C. P.
Lovely neighborhood spot, skandi vibe, cooking books and generous sandwiches
E. J.
Sunday@11:00 it was overcrowded, our coffees took 15mins to arrive at table (after our breakfast), staff were nonchalant & service all over the place. Over-indulged kids making a racket was the icing on the over-priced, tiny portion of banana cake we paid £6 each for.
F. B.
Really cute little place with outside seating area and a good amount of choice for every kind of eater, loads of vegan options as well as hot and cold options for everyone, fab coffee as well
E. P.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food.
R. G.
You can have any kind of milk with your coffee but they only serve poached eggs. Scrambled would be a nice to have option. The food and coffee is nevertheless delicious.
C. L.
Perfect spot for weekend breakfast/brunch - had perfectly poached eggs with a very generous serving of avo on sourdough. Coffee is great, staff are friendly and the atmosphere is laid back - what more could you want?
M. M.
Best coffee around the area. Love the beans they use. Staff are really friendly. Something worth nothing is they dont take card under £5. Have some cash if you are popping in just for a coffee.
R. B.
Great for breakfast / brunch: coffee, fresh juice and delicious food. Try the bacon, avocado + poached eggs on sourdough.
Two years and countless visits later - still consistently excellent.
A. F.
Great place, with the best outside seating in the area. Lovely seating room downstairs with fire place, couch and a shared library. Amazing coffee from Allpress, magic breakfast and lovely and warm customer service.
E. M.
Came on Sunday and was told that the cafe has ran out of BREAD. 90% menu of this place is about bread, toasts and tartines. And they told ne that nothing from the menu is available. Are you kidding me? Go to Nisa round the corner and buy some bread, no? Post-covid time shouldnt make your business so rediculous.
J. F.
Lovely staff, great chill environment and music, and tasty food and drinks. Good vegan options and affordable. A great place to spend some time reading a book or hanging out :)
J. J.
Excellent coffee, good pastries and very friendly service, with a nice outdoor area in the back.
X. X.
A touch on the expensive side but the quality of the food and coffee is fantastic. Very friendly staff and a nice outside seating area is also available. Today I indulged on a beautifully warming Thai Coconut Soup. It was hearty, nutritious and so tasty! Full of cauliflower, spinach and squash. Real winter food!!!
A. R.
Great little coffee and brunch place. All food and drinks served are delicious. Pretty chill mood and great staff as well
A. O.
A bit pricey, but the atmosphere is lovely. The coffee's good, there's a mouthwatering selection of pastries to try, and it's fun to stare at all the books and merchandise while you're enjoying them.
B. D.
Best coffee in Kennington by far and always super friendly staff too. It's not all coffee, cakes and food though as they have retained some of the books from when this used to be the Kennington Book Shop. Outdoor seating as well as more seating in the basement.
J. W.
Nice food and surroundings. Local cafe, easy place to grab lunch or coffee
H. C.
Classic, but delicious brunch menu. Good coffee and nice vibe. The outdoor garden at the back is perfect for sunny days.
A. T.
Love it. Amazing coffee great dishes chill quite relaxing atmosphere lovely service. I d love to stay there all day if I could.
A. H.
This is an awesome local coffee shop - so glad to have found it nearby. Sometimes it does get a little overwhelmed by the line, but the staff are friendly and it's a really comfortable place to hang out! See you again soon VB!
M. T.
Lovely coffee spot with delicious cakes and a spacious courtyard area.
R. M.
Charming cafe slash bookstore just south of the river. Coffee being used is Allpress for espresso and Dark Arts for V60. Lovely spot to work or escape the fast pace of the city.
M. M.
Reasonable coffee but poor value for mediocre food. One dry piece of toast, two small poached eggs, one sausage and tiny amount of rocket £9! Still hungry.
K. M.
May not be big or have an extensive menu, but it serves the best coffee in London, all with an unpretentious smile and genuine warmth.
Next time I'm back in this part of London or even just near I'll be back
A. V.
A bit small, but the atmosphere is nice. Average selection of pastries but I've seen nice cooked breakfasts on others' tables!
A. B.
Such a lovely cafe with great coffee, teas and food. The place is so cozy and nice and the outdoor garden is just perfect for those sunny days.
M. M.
Dropped by for some late breakfast on a Sunday - was really busy and they advised a 40 min wait for food - I stayed and whilst it was a 40 min delay as advised the food was worth the wait - fresh, delicious and well presented - coffee also good, add in friendly staff and it was a great place to chill on a Sunday!
Y. A.
Lovely little coffee shop, with good coffee and tasty dishes. Has some outdoor seating for nice weather!
J. H.
Lovely cafe. Staff is so friendly and helpful and the coffee is superb. Highly recommend
S. v. M.
Best place in Kennington-area for coffee, delicious toast and great place to work. Tip: go look downstairs, where you can relax and read in a livingroom-atmosphere.
F. G.
Good place to visit. It has a nice, pleasant environment/atmosphere. The staff is very friendly. The coffee is great
M. G.
Really relaxed little place, with a nice courtyard outside to enjoy a quiet drink. Didn't try the food, but it looked and smelled good.
J. A.
Really nice coffee....when it's open.
I think they like to shut early sometimes, I went about an hour before it was meant to close but they were already cleaning everything down so I couldn't get a drink.
A. L.
Best food in London. Nicest staff, the lady with red, now white hair is the sweetest person ever. Come here.
G. G.
Great coffee and atmosphere, really toasty inside with an upmarket crowd. Missing the 5th star as food can be a little basic at times.
c. h.
One of the coziest, friendliest cafes. Amazing coffee, kind baristas, beautiful interior. Can’t really ask for more from a cafe.
L. T.
Easily the best cafe in Kennington. Great coffee, avocado toast, pastries, friendly staff, and very tastefully decorated.
K. B.
Lovely coffee shop, great smoothies and a nice atmosphere. Light, bright and airy.
P. G.
Always amazing breakfast and coffee... super chilled atmosphere. Best coffee shop in the area!
I. S.
Great brunch & very reasonably priced! The courtyard out back is a nice surprise - quiet and sunny.
H. P.
Great place for coffee and avocado brunch. Other brunch options are available and does really nice cakes and pastries.
R. M.
Love this place!! Delicious coffee & brunch. Nice that there's seasonal options.
M. H.
Great coffee and outdoor area. Amazing books and the food is reasonable. Especially for London. Great helpful staff too.

A. C.
Always friendly, fast, good food and strong coffee. Cozy spot I recommend
T. P.
Staff is really nice, food's great every time I have eaten here and they have a range of drinks too.
H. K.
Very good quality food and drink in a nice environment.
Let down by the poor use of the space for seating
F. T.
Tasty food, good coffee, bit pricey
N. W.
I have took a study of this cafe for my educational purpose and it is really Good and better than expected...Hope I will have a time soon with this books cafe😘..,
F.
Really friendly place with good coffee, but it's very annoying they force you to spend £5 to be able to pay by card.
C. M.
Great café to relax and have great coffee! Always a wide selection of pastries and sandwiches.
E. C.
Really great coffee. Warm and welcoming staff. A new local favourite!
A. S.
Great breakfast and friendliest brunch staff in town! Pasteries are amazing too
F. W.
Not one of my favourites while up here in London visiting friends .Vanilla was clean and great selection of books for sale ,the place lacked atmosphere!.
F. B.
Great coffee and very pleasant environment to have breakfast !! Well recommended

Delicious cafe, the breakfasts are great. Really lovely setting.
N. H.
Cool space and atmosphere. Good hot food and baked goods, small portions.
R. H.
Very nice place for coffee or some avocado on toast. Prices are on the high side.
