Amazing breakfast at a really good price, came around 10am on a weekday and got straight in, whereas was queuing for over half an hour outside at the weekend. Worth the wait as food cooked perfectly, lots of veggie and vegan options too! This was the Veggie USA and Business
I. G.
Hands down the best breakfast in Newcastle. A great range of traditional and US inspired breakfast options, with a solid lunch menu too. If you're really hungry, I recommend 'The Business'! Can't fault the pancakes either! ❤️
C. O.
What a lovely place! Love the character, staff were friendly, service great and food delicious. Breakfast looked to be served all day and there was lots of other choices too including a kids menu. Definitely one to try if you haven't already 🙂
F. A.
Veggie England breakfast and Buttermilk Pancakes. Very delicious! Staff are friendly. They don't take online reservations but the wait outside wasn't too bad. Lovely seating area inside. Menu is big with a variety of options. Haven't tried their drink menu or their shakes but they looked really good.
K. C.
Would highly recommend coming here if you’re super hungry for a nice breakfast with great value! There’s options for every type of person. I always try to bring people here who visit Newcastle. Very popular with the locals and there’s usually always a queue. Would recommend coming early if you don’t want to wait long!

Really quirky cafe. Great selection of drinks and cakes. The food looks great too but I didn't have any. The staff were lovely.

Haven't been to butterfly cabinet for a few years but it is my favourite place to grab a bite when I'm in Newcastle.
I got the USA breakfast. The pancakes were fluffy and the sausage, bacon and hash browns were great. Great selection of food and drink, great decor and if you've been or been past you'll know that there's always a que to get in. Well worth it.
N. T.
Absolutely phenomenal choice, amazing quality and the staff are so lovely too! Best food of 2022 for sure, thanks so much guys!
S. P.
An ever popular eatery. On the weekend and at lunchtimes be prepared to queue outside for a table. They're famous for the breakfast menu and although the portion sizes are generous, the quality of the breakfast is okay. I will say their chips are the best; excellent!! Friendly staff. A good range of options on the menu. I used to love this place but the menu hasn't really changed in years and there is alot of competition in the immediate area. Not exciting but love the chips!
M. R.
Lovely place with great breakfast! Visited The Butterfly Cabinet with my sister. She had Buttermilk pancakes. Great texture and taste. Myself, I had a toasted muffin with salmon & eggs. Also, very tasty. Also the staff provided us a take-away box for the leftover pancakes. Even as a snack later that day they where still great. Thank you for the hospitality :)
A. W.
Great food and drinks for a reasonable price, the staff are great. Get there early otherwise you may have a queue to get in.
C.
This place had been recommended to us by multiple people. I like my big portions so was told to go for the "Business" breakfast. I wasn't disappointed! Everything was cooked beautifully and the portion was perfect 💪 Friendly staff and very reasonably priced.
If ever you're in Heaton, you should definitely try the Butterfly Cabinet!

Delivery: I like to indulge in an all day breakfast option on a weekend. Well worth the short time it takes to arrive - the quality of the food is exceptional and always piping hot.
I've attached a picture of the vegetarian option - it looks pretty meager in the picture for some reason but in reality it's a really hearty portion (enough to leave me feeling stuffed for the best part of a day).
I would definitely recommend the 'butterfly Cabinet' to family and friends ☺️
A. B.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food. It's a fabulous place and will become a regular place to meet friends from now on.
M. L.
The Butterfly Cabinet is absolutely the best place for breakfast ☺️☺️ Favourite is the USA Breakfast - Pancakes, Sausages, Bacon, Hash Browns and Maple Syrup 🤤🤤🤤
C.
Been a few times to the butterfly cabinet, food is delicious price is reasonable and it is always busy. Quadruple decker balboa sandwich is my fave so far! 😋 what a sandwich! The chips are to die for aswell and I do rate the iced coffee. The menu is so good so.much choice and doesn't matter if you can't decide between breakfast or lunch because it does it all. Great vegan and veggie selection... I'm neither but since eating here I literally love veggie bacon and don't actually like normal bacon. 🙃

Where do I start?
What an adorable place! Such a hidden little gem. The staff are so incredibly friendly and welcoming. There was a bit of a queue to get in but the staff are very prompt in the turnaround.
As we went in I was mesmerised by the decoration and how the place has been styled. A lot of pride has been taken into being picture perfect. The ceiling is absolutely incredible and I was so amazed as it looked like something you see in a luxury hotel.
The service was absolutely amazing, the staff are so prompt with taking orders and the food + drink arrived very quickly! The quantities were so incredibly generous and so filling. Presentation was lovely, the food tasted delicious! The coffee was amazing (amazing beans!).
To top it off, as we asked for the bill, it came with sweets! How adorable? I love the little touches that go a long way. But, the bill? I don’t think I’ve ever had such a cheap brunch!!! I couldn’t believe it! WE NEED YOU IN LONDON!!
Couldn’t recommend this place enough! Don’t think twice, it’s worth the queuing...
S. R.
Just enjoyed a spur of the moment vegan breakfast, together with some skin-on fry’s and it was absolutely delicious ! … The portions were huge and I’ll definitely be back !
M. C.
Never fails to impress, a long time favourite of our family. Delicious food, excellent quality and just lovely staff. Brunch here is a must! Outside area for those lovely sunny afternoons
B. M.
Fantastic breakfast food, best around. Recommend going early as there is always a massive queue outside this place!
M. G.
Fantastic food choices, expertly made. We've been several times and always in the morning. Based upon how good their breakfasts are however, their lunch and evening menu shouldnt disappoint. Bohemian decor, rough n ready but clean and always busy with a good vibe about the place. Kid-friendly although tight for space if you bring a buggy or need a high chair. Try 'The Business' cooked breakfast if you've got a big appetite! The only slight negative is the morning queue, due to its popularity.
Photos show: Salmon Benedict, Lemon Iced Tea, Porridge & fruit, American Pancakes (with syrup, bacon & sausage) and 'The Business' full English.
J. B.
Always great pancakes and a lovely place for brunch. Can be quite busy so make sure you don't go in a rush but worth the wait
L. S.
Super place really unusual with a great selection of food. Always very full on Saturdays best get there early!
V. B.
Had a full English & have to say having read the reviews I was a bit disappointed. Pretty standard bit no toast, mushrooms or black pudding. I'll stick to my usual place.
D. G.
Amazing café and breakfast is top notch. However the maple syrup isn't proper maple syrup, and just a sweet syrup.
But 5* experience and breakfast.
Update:
Went for breakfast after stag do. Was exactly what I needed to feel human again. The staff were amazing and lovely as always and I now feel like I could be ready to face the world now... However I'm just gonna sit on my sofa and try and survive the rest of the day now... But I think I can just about do this thanks to the great breakfast and customer service of this fantastic location.
M. C. S.
This place does some lethal breakfast options. In my opinion the best in Newcastle. So much so that during the weekend it is really popular and because the secret is out that it's good the queues can be a bit daunting. Which is no faults of the restaurant's, if you do good food and you're popular that's not your fault. But it does mean for me and you we have to wait outside sometimes in the cold to get our fill. That's the only downside. Food is reasonably priced, served in a big portion, staff reasonably friendly. Inside is quite cozy as well. Overall 6 stars. Simply based on the food. Definitely visit this place
M. H.
Me and my friend really enjoyed the breakfasts! The staff were very friendly and chatty. We were really happy with the cost for the amount of food we had. Good value overall. It had a nice vibe and was warm on a cold day!
J. G.
Huge menu but all the food is lovely and homemade. They do a brilliant breakfast menu and loads of different juices, smoothies, coffees and ice tea. Portions are massive including the side dishes. The chips are lush and the staff are dead canny. It's really popular so it does get busy and you might have a wait for a table but if you don't mind waiting till after 2 for your lunch you can usually get a seat.
A. F. Q. A.
Great breakfast, good value for money, nice staff.weekends are always packed n feels a bit like I need air in cafe, but weekdays busy but not as busy as weekend,be prepared to wait out in a line on weekends.
D. D.
Very quirky decor, very clean, always a que out the door as it's not that big inside so wrap up to keep warm while waiting to get through front door , food is amazing and plenty of it, service is quick and friendly will definitely be back and will recommend it
J. A.
Love this place. Food always lovely and staff are friendly. Good portions for the price
Been many times for breakfast and lunch... looking forward to my next visit already :-)
l. B.
The food is simply amazing and the service is second to none - perfect everytime 👌
T. R.
Amazing little cafe on the High Street, first timer recommended by my family and left more than satisfied ! Prices are well worth the quality, great service and amazing food.
P.
Superb as ever. Everything fresh and tasty everywhere clean, and lovely coffee. If I could give 6 stars I would
S. F.
Food was lovely. Sausage a bit chewy down to the skin being quite thick. But overall fantastic food. Lovely friendly staff.
T. S.
A delicious vegetarian breakfast. Super friendly service. We are never disappointed. Thank you
G. G.
The only place that i will go for Breakfast in newcastle, they never disappoint. friendly clean and food is always spot on.
R. S.
First time I've been here and really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. My wife had Korean noodles and loved it, and I had the USA breakfast which was massive and tasted great. A really good place to eat - one of the best places to get a proper cup of coffee too! I'll be back!
p. g.
Got there just after 11am. Que of approximately 8 people in front of us all waiting for a table. Only waited 15mins to be seated despite how busy the place was. Breakfast was very tasty/good quality and good value. Decor is pleasant, staff are helpful and courteous. Venue is clean and atmosphere/mix of different people well managed. Will definitely be back in the near future!
Z. Q.
Amazing recommendation. Sometimes have to queue but it’s worth it. Amazing range of food to choose from all day and amazing coffees and drinks selection. Staff are so friendly and welcoming and it is so reasonably priced
A.
Love this place!! Only downside is it can get super busy and there's usually a queue outside!
Staff are really friendly and can't fault the service! The buttermilk pancakes are to die for!! Our favourite cafe to visit on our days off work🙂
W. f.
Amazing breakfast, friendly and efficient service and lovely interior, if your looking for a change from frankies and bennys or some other chain Definitely give this place a visit, we went for breakfast but will definitely be going back and trying lunch. Breakfast prices were reasonable, We tried the business breakfast, it was large and I couldn't finish it but still ate one of everything. No photos this time but I'll add them when we go back.
S. F.
Amazing brekkie as always. Staff polite and friendly. We will be back soon.
K.
Where do I start with butterfly cabinet
There's so much to say I am so passionate
The service is great and the food is delicious
There's nothin I could say that would be malicious
I'd eat here every day if I could
This is the best breakfast in the Heaton hood
💜
K. H.
Great food and really nice staff. The only small problem is the fact that the place is tiny, so we often have to wait to get a table.
A. J.
Awesome, great breakfasts. Be prepared to wait....if it's raining, take a brolly
T.
Amazing hangover recovery breakfast. However on the weekend be prepared for a bit of a wait to get seated
M. M.
Great food and service even though was busy. Had to wait for table which is not unusual at busy lunchtime
j. s.
Great food, excellent staff, could not fault the service. I will return.
W. B.
Outrageous portion sizes, very friendly staff. My leftover nachos kept me fed for lunch the next day
C. T.
Love getting breakfast from here. It's popular so always busy. I love eggy bread & the portion is huge & delicious.
C. R.
The best Breakfast in the world. Great food and portions. This place gets busy for a very good reason.
M. J.
One of the best breakfasts you'll find in Newcastle and it's served all day. Lovely coffee and milkshakes to go with it!
N. H.
Better than good. Bohemian cafe with a great and substantial food offering and super friendly staff. Fabulous lunch today thanks to all.
B. H.
Come here often, best breakfast we've ever had and a must visit when in the area. Lovely little café/restaurant with great staff!
K. T.
Love this place. We come here regularly for brunch. Service is always decent. Lately we have had a few takeaways during lockdown when we are unable to sit inside. Amazing selection of food, veggie and vegan friendly. I would recommend adding a portion of the potatoes with caramelised onion and goats cheese to your order, you won’t be disappointed! Great coffee too. Very reasonably priced, always worth the queue out the door!
A. O.
Good atmosphere.. but very old and smelly... The food was ok : quick and positive service..
E. H.
Great business. Food was top tier, price was very reasonable. Service is perfect, new favourite breakfast spot in Newcastle. 👏
K. W.
First time visiting but knew would have to get there early to queue. Got seated straight away and the food was unbelievable. Daughter got chocolate pancakes and can hands down say they are the nicest pancakes we've ever had. I had a breakfast which was very good and a pear iced tea which was yummy and so refreshing. Will definitely be returning
K. B.
Lush food, very quirky, good prices. Kids always enjoy going for the novelty 😊
H. T.
Yummy food, great range of diets! Vegan , veggie or meat eaters it's a great spot for your mixed diet family / friends. Lovely people work here, they're so welcoming and nice. Highly recommend for the price and food quality and customer service.
E. H.
The best place for breakfast in Newcastle without a doubt. Top quality food, portions to keep you full all day, lovely decor and vibe and excellent value for money. The staff are just fantastic and can accommodate all sorts of requests. I've been going here for 8 years now and I've never once had anything less than a perfect experience. If they sold T-shirts I would get one.
J. M.
Been going here since it used to be ed Belle n Herb. It's still great, love the venue, the 90's tunes in the background and the exceptionally filling breakfasts. Whether it's a full on assault of English breakfast or the maple syrup madness of the USA, you won't be disappointed (or empty) when you leave
T. W.
The place has a lovely shabby chic feel. The service was good, you may have to wait outside for a table, but the turnover was quite quick when we went. We opted for the breakfast options, big portions only let down by the quality. Every thing was overcooked, obviously and understandably pre cooked and heated up to order, just not executed very well, a bit disappointing.
D. W.
Good food great menu choices. Unfortunately that means it was so busy the queue was out the door. Still mint tho.
N. O. F.
Excellent full breakfast and chocolate pancakes. Great coffee too 😊
R. B.
Favourite place for a spot of lunch. Love the Balboa sandwich but it's a monster of a sarnie! Also good vegan options to keep the wife happy.
A. R.
Lovely Veggie full English breakfast. Staff were very polite and helpful. Place was buzzing. Unusual but nice decor. Highly recommended. I will be back.
a. f. c.
Lovely food and service in a beautiful setting
M. D.
Had breakfast this morning and the food was quality and good portion sizes. There was a queue to get in which was an indication of how good the food is!
Double dab
7.5 on the litty scale
C. W.
Amazing little place, food was delicious too and plenty of choice
M. M.
Fantastic breakfast venue, reasonable prices friendly staff and superb food.
W. S.
Best all day breakfast in Britain .. yes, its that good!!
M. N.
Cosy and cute place with unique dishes and friendly staff
F. S.
A nice cafe to be in, with good drinks, a good sized menu and an AWESOME cherry bakewell cake! The staff were lovely, and the prices are decent. I do wish though, that the fried breakfast was cooked with more care; a few of the items were quite overcooked and dry. Still, I would recommend, and will definitely return (and buy out their entire stock of bakewell cake).
G. C.
Fabulous food, great decor and ambiance.
K. K.
Went for food today, with my brothers.
There was a little delay in my food coming.
But the staff where really kind about it and doing there best to get it out.
Customer service was really good and did not go un-noticed. The chef even gave some chips on the house. Which was very much appreciated.
Thank you for the service!
N. M.
Easily the best breakfast in Newcastle. Went twice over three days, and I never do that! You won't need to eat anything for the rest of the day after the Business Breakfast, my mouth's watering now thinking about it lol!
D. C.
Incredibly nice and extremely popular breakfast and brunch venue but get ready for a 30 min wait at the shortest.
T. P.
Lovely little cafe, quirky deco, great food options (veggies) perfect for brunch.
Only downer was that it wasn’t massively busy and yet service was quite slow
L. S.
One of my favourite local places to eat. Whenever I have visitors over from other parts of the country I bring them here for breakfast and everyone is astounded by the portion sizes and value for money. I have been coming here for many years and everything I've sampled on the menu is delicious. From pancakes, full breakfasts, the range of eggs benedict dishes to milkshakes, coffees and smoothies. If you go for lunch the burgers and fries are also very good. Would highly recommend this place for brunch and beyond if you are in the area. It can get busier at weekends but it is worth the queue!
R. O.
Tried to go yesterday to find out they were closed (Facebook and Google not updated) to come today and find out its takeaway only which wasn't states on Facebook or Google.
Food was ok but a bit cold by the time I got it home and honestly I'll just wait for them to reopen if I go back. Food is normally utterly lovely but this experience was a bit of a let down. Just wish they'd use their social media to inform their customers what they're doing.
J. M.
This place is great, very popular (I've heard there can be queues to get in on a weekend, but during the week is fine). The staff are lovely, we had 3 prams with us and it wasn't quiet. The staff took the initiative to make space for us by moving things around and made us feel welcome. The food is great, lots of choice, generous portions and they cater for different people (there's protein pancakes and vegetarian options etc). I'd also highly recommend the coconut mocha, it's amazing!
P. D.
With the Crazy time of Covid it's been a while since our last visit, but more than happy to say the have not lost their touch. Amazing food, great prices and the nicest of staff, what more fo you want?
A. W.
Hands down the best place for brunch not only in Newcastle, but very probably (definitely) the entirety of the UK. Putting it simply, you’ll never encounter poached eggs as fabulous at the ones served at The Butterly Cabinet. Brunch aside, the whole food menu is fantastic and all the staff I’ve had the pleasure of being served by are superb. If you haven’t been, you’re missing out!
d. m.
This is a lovely place with a nice atmosphere. I can't understand why the queues extend outside the door and down the street when the food I've tried is just above average. There are other good options nearby so don't be fooled by the queues, it's good but not great. A couple of reasons why: I ordered a vegi breakfast with poached eggs. My breakfast came with the eggs sitting atop a large portion of baked beans, so the yolk would run off into the sauce of the beans. Call me picky, but the yolk of an egg is the highlight of the breakfast and I don't want it mixing in with baked bean sauce! Just seemed a bit careless. Also, no toast. You have to order separately, so it was all a bit cold by the time the toast arrived from two floors up and added another £2 on to the bill which was already not cheap. All in all for 2 pretty basic breakfasts, 1 portion of toast and a coffee each you're looking at £20. Food lovely, but nowt special!
J. D.
1st time I've visited this place and has to be said the food is delicious.......
I had the farmhouse omelette and my daughter the eggs Benedict over salmon and wow, both dishes looked amazing, but above that, they both actually tasted better than the looked which is amazing..... definitely be back soon.
Great food in a good atmosphere.
D. J.
My partner and I have both been here several times and the food is always absolutely amazing. I always recommend the butterfly to anyone and everyone who will listen!
B.
Amazing place, very eclectic.
Food is brilliant and well priced, but can get very busy as very popular (so would recommend to get there early) or be prepared to queue for a table. Look out for the amazing mirror designed and made by a local artist.
Would definitely recommend Eggs Benedict 🥚☕. Best english breakfast my husband has had in ages. Great service too 😀.
H. T.
I love this place. We tend to avoid on a weekend just because it's always busy but you can usually get a table easily on a weekday. Massive breakfast menu with loads of choice. Eggs Benedict is lovely and the French toast is delicious and huge! Portions very good size and reasonable prices and the lattes are yum.
L. G.
They've got something for everyone and it's all delicious! My sister-in-law's previous booking fir her 21st birthday let us down so we ordered from butterfly cabinet and they were so good. Even threw in a little cake for free. Would recommend to anyone.
V. S.
Service was a bit disappointing, items missed from orders, toast didn't turn up with the food and weren't offered condiments. Missing items were rectified with a little wait. Food was fine, I wouldn't rush back.
H. W.
Food was delicious, we had pancakes & halloumi breakfast. Staff were so lovely too. Only slight issue is the situation queuing outside in the pouring rain however somewhat expected on a Sat morning.
A. T.
Delicious food and a really nice atmosphere
J.
Others have mentioned having to wait. We did too, but not for long - and the wait was worth it. Delicious, competitively priced food and a fantastic selection for breakfast, including several veggie/vegan options. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the staff are friendly and helpful. Recommend!
S. S.
Black and blue burger the best in newcastle that ive had.i eat there regular .all of the staff are lovely.shame you cant get a burger b4 11am though.cheers
R. L. M.
Always a good vegan breakfast!
C. L. W.
Lovely food, staff and extensive menu. Great for vegetarians. Jake is my favourite staff member, he's so attentive to me and my partner! Thanks Jake - Chelsea and Vas :) - go early to avoid disappointment as it's always very busy especially on weekends.
A. P.
By miles the best breakfast in Newcastle, fresh super tasty. Staff are excellent in their hippy cool ways and the whole place has this cool old vibe
C. A.
High quality food served in massive portions from a pretty varied menu. This place excels at brunch but is also very vegetarian friendly as almost everything offered has a vegetarian equivalent. The drinks vary from good coffees to some interesting milkshakes and smoothies and are definitely worth a go. They can be queues to get in so make allowances
A. C.
Amazing food. Highly recommend the eggs benedict. Everything fresh and actually quite reasonable. The food has heart and soul, lovely staff and nice friendly atmosphere. If you have kids they have a kids menu and fab milkshakes. Well worth a look. I recently went here after not visiting for 7 years (moved out of area) and the standard is as good as I remember. Outstanding and exquisite.
J. C.
Quite small and usually crowded. Lovely breakfast food and seems to be many options for vegans and vegetarians. Alot of students seem to go here. Pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs are a few of the things they sell. The menus pretty large so I'm sure there will be something you like. Good cafe but not an amazing one.
H. W.
We visited yesterday afternoon for Sunday panini brunch at half three. The menu was extensive and the staff were very friendly. Though I didn't get to the counter before closing time the cakes in the patisserie stand looked amazing. If I knew they were going to take it off the stand I would have ordered the cake to go. But I can't fault the portions and service. I dare say I'll be back again soon.
L. M.
This place is a hidden gem! Had breakfast here which was one of the best I've had. The menu offered a huge choice of different breakfasts so there is definitely something for everyone. The price was average but well worth it. The quirky decor was unexpected from the outside appearance and added real character to the place. Would definitely recommend a trip here.
J. A.
With a fantastic selection of breakfast and lunchtime options, this place is definitely worth a visit if you are a vegetarian. The prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes. The food quality is outstanding The coffees and fresh juices are also top notch. The only down side is you can expect a ridiculous queue and waiting time due to its popularity. This queue is allowed to spill uncontrolled and unmanaged by the restaurant well out into the street sometimes disrupting cyclists, pedestrians and people walking with prams. Perhaps a sensible solution would be to create a tapered off queue by the side of the restaurant rather than using the space to squeeze in a few outdoor seats?
r.
Super satisfying, independent cafe with tons of choice and busy as it's so popular! Had breakfast this week and despite normal wait times, the service and food were fantastic!
Will be back for sure.
j. s.
Lovely family friendly community feel cafe .eggs are always good .salmon and eggs a firm fave with a coconut latte .
Outdoor seats available too.
C.
Great place to eat. Takes a while to get served, but its always worth the wait - you can tell a lot of love goes into the food here. Generous portions and a great veggie selection too. Can't really fault it, tbh.
k. b.
Fantastic breakfast I had usa my husband had business even did food for my dog best way to start our holiday having breakfast here excellent will be back thoughout our holiday 5****
M. J.
My wife has been vegetarian her entire life and says without doubt the Butterfly Cabinet make the best burgers she’s ever tasted. I have to agree, whether you’re veggie or eat meat, the food here is excellent. Portion sizes are more than enough and the staff are friendly. We love it. Thank you.
A. J.
Fantastic breakfast great staff can thoroughly recommend it
K. M.
The Butterfly Cabinet is one of Newcastle’s finest. If ever my partner and I find ourselves with a free weekend morning we treat ourselves to brunch at this establishment.
Whether it’s the salmon benedict, pancakes, chorizo pasta (they’ll sneak in at 10:55 if you ask nicely) the food is incredible. The waiting staff are also incredible humans. Rushed off their feed, boiling hot through the summer, they are always professional and always happy to help you with anything! They are kind, attentive people who always strive to have a smile on (even if the customer doesn’t deserve it). I take great pride in telling friends and family around the Uk of the butterfly cabinet, and take as many newbies as I can who also have the same experience.
We are grateful for the poached eggs, the legends in the kitchens, and the lasses who can psyche the right iced tea for you ❤️
A. S.
Never had a bad breakfast here, consistently good. Always look forward to coming back.
g. h.
Salmon eggs Benedict was amazing, and the full Englush went down a treat for my daughter, would highly recommend quick and easy pick up, will def be ordering again! I'd give it 6 stars if I could 😊
N. B.
I love it here. The food is great and the portion sizes are huge. Depending on when you go you may have to queue outside for a while but it's worth it as its only a small space. It's popular with Northumbria and Newcastle students living in Heaton and the staff are amazing.
It's only open till about 4.30 and serves breakfast all day and lunch too. The butterfly club sandwich and the cherry ice tea are my favourites. The salmon and eggs muffin is another really good one from the breakfast menu.
J. L.
This is a lovely local place serving great quality food at reasonable prices. The breakfasts are awesome - authentic American style pancakes, eggs Benedict and variations on these themes with their own twists. The service is on the slow side and there often wait times due to the popularity of the place - you should take this into account when planning your time there, but it certainly shouldn't put you off trying it.
M.
Could not fault the place, short queue outside, which you should expect at a busy time, for what is obviously a popular place. All the staff were brilliant, from the girl at the door, who dealt with us in a very pleasant manner, and the other staff who were just as good. Food was very tasty and the atmosphere pleasing. Can't understand the negative reviews on here!
N. K.
Delicious breakfast and great service. Highly recommend!
S. H.
In all the time I have been living in Heaton (at least 10 years) I have never been in the Butterfly Cabinet as it was a trendy place to go and often had long queues waiting to get in. My wife and I thought that the pressure to eat extremely quickly to ease the queues would outweigh the pleasure of waiting in the queue. However, it is a little quieter in the summer as there are fewer students so we decided to brave it and see why the queues form. On entering, we were struck by the warm, cosy, friendly atmosphere. The menu was extensive and there were many vegetarian and vegan choices which we didn't expect at all. I had a vegetarian all day breakfast and my wife also had a vegetarian meal which were both delicious. We also had a pot of tea between us which was excellent. The staff were very friendly and the bill came to less than £18 which we thought was very reasonable for what we had eaten. Therefore we left extremely satisfied for £20 after tips and realised why so many people queue outside this establishment! We will be back!
V. A. V.
Absolutely in love with this place.
Awesome breakfast, and nice atmosphere.
Prices are good and staff is nice. You can even find the updated menu online.
The food is simply awesome and the people waiting outside on the we is a confirmation.
Not so much waiting for the food (quite fast actually) and no rush on eatin. Easy parking.
n. c.
Lovely cafe for breakfast and lunch
B. G.
Waited outside with everyone else for the doors to open, and it was a joy, fantastic setting, brilliant friendly staff, and the best breakfast ever. It was a wonderful experience. The reason people queued was now obvious.... It is so worth it..i will be back again, thank all the staff, you made breakfast so special. No wonder my daughter raved about you.. Best wishes from Billy now home in Blackpool,
A. S.
Visited here a few days ago, could not find fault at all, best breakfast i have had in Newcastle to date! Went for the Bury benedict it was absolutely delicious, will be back as both the staff and the food were amazing!
G. N.
I always love coming in here! It does get quite busy due to popularity however. But I can always rely on here as a nice place to catch up with friends. They do lovely brunch-style foods!
D. D.
Friendly staff and good quality food.. The only concern of mine is that many people would occupy table doing nothing, which puts the staff in a very tight position when people are waiting at the door. I would like to humbly request to think about the staff and the people waiting at the door. Again this is not the fault of the staff working there as its always been a pleasure getting served by them.
Z.
Love the atmosphere. It was very crowded even for breakfast but the service was good. The food was good too, I just got the pancakes but my friends got the English breakfast which they really enjoyed. They have a variety of drinks as well which is always good.
B. O.
Love this restaurant a lot everyone come here because they do amazing food and it’s taste so good love this place ❤️👍🏻
D. C.
Used it when it was The Herb & Bell. It's always been a really great Cafe.😁
R. J.
Your vegetarian burgers are the best I've ever tasted! me and my husband live in Leeds but whenever we're up visiting family, going to your place is always a request I make. Keep up the smashing food!
C. D.
Good place for breakfast, lots of choice and quick service for cooked-to-order food. Also does lunches (haven't tried them for lunch). Get there by opening time to avoid a wait!
C. D.
Wonderful breakfast and fast service.
S. B.
Always packed out, now I know why. Amazing food and service.
L. R.
Fantastic food, breakfasts of pancakes to full English and much more, all great. Service is good too. It's very popular for good reason. If you have to wait for a table it's worth the wait.
S. B.
Wow! Great staff, lovely freshly prepared food and HUUUGE portions. Highly recommend even if you have to queue for a while (no bookings here).
J. R.
Wish it was bigger been a few times and I Just love it. Food amazing staff
Amazing atmosphere is friendly and definitely worth a visit even if we had to stand outside for 20 minutes to get a table.. I was definitely happy too!! Parking is a bit akward but plenty of it.
R.
Went for a take out for my partners birthday. He'd been earlier in the week with his mum and had loved the place. We both ordered the USA but I got extra fried eggs and blackpudding.
Pros:
Great service.
Let me order from the door as I had my dog with me (paid inside as I tied the dog outside).
Very filling food with home made pancakes which were delicious. Sausages were proper Cumberland style and tasted lush. Blackpudding was nice and thick, non of these crappy thin slices, plus cooked to perfection. The eggs were still a bit gooey which is (for me) perfect.
My partner thoroughly enjoyed his as well by wolfing it down.
We got malteaser brownies, very nice.
Very well packaged for take away.
Lovely staff.
Cons:
The butter had completely melted due to the heat from the pancakes so we used some of our own but no biggie.
Eggs too greasy for my liking but that may have just been to the take away box.
I wish I'd known I could have jumped the que as I was getting a take away and no signs saying they do take aways either.
Overall I would definitely go back and recommend the place. Great price for what you get, they cover so many different tastes and the cafe looks very inviting. I'm looking forward to going back for a sit down in there.
Be aware that there is a que into the street but it goes down very quickly.
C. W.
The portions are huuuuuge! Great for brunch if you haven't had breakfast and you're starving. The space can be a bit of a squish and we did have to wait 20mins for a table. The toilets are so gross though.
k. w.
Great food and nice portion sizes. The pancakes are furnominal and i have no complaints, 5 star service every time. It is always busy so that says everything you need to know about the place. If you haven't been already, your missing out!
W. M.
Excellent Breakfast and Great coffee!
J. P.
Great local cafe, definitely a place to go. Excellent every time we go!
D. W.
Thus was our second visit to the Butterfly Cabinet, and it didn't let us down the staff were polite and friendly the food was top notch even the wait due to covid distancing wasn't to much of a chore, highly recommended if you are looking for good food in a great place try the Butterfly Cabinet you definitely won't be disappointed.
L. E.
Over a decade and the place still had the same spirit it always did. Great brunch, great people, great soul!
L. W.
I got the USA omelette with sauce on the side. Comes with house coleslaw, chips & small bit salad on plate. The positives, nice hot omelette, tasty coleslaw and nice bit of salad. Downside, omelette was greasy for me but I don't like oil. I'd just ask for it cooked with as little oil as possible. Chips were hot but looked as if cooked 2 or 3 times...not really my thing. I left them.
My husband had the American pancakes with sausage and bacon. He swapped to banana pancakes for .50p extra. They were delicious. Sausages not bad..ok...would eat again. But the bacon was cold and tough. As though cooked an hour ago and kept under heat lamp. This would be the one food he's decided he wouldn't eat again after this being at least the 3rd time it's happened. They have always replaced them with hot bacon but it's certainly not freshly cooked it's just kept hot, or so it seems.
We had a decaf coffee and a decaf tea. Having decaf is a good thing as husband has a heart condition that doesn't allow for caffeine.
Overall we like this place and would go back...just the bacon wouldn't be for us.
I would recommend you give the Butterfly Cabinet a try.
T. r.
Lovely food great staff
C. B.
Really love this place. If you are a fan of breakfast food then you should go here. They do other stuff of course, but a giant American style breakfast with bacon, pancakes and maple syrup, makes me happy in so many ways.
R. R.
Good food, good value. Service is definitely improving - used to be a lot slower but I'm finding that we get our orders taken and food arrives more quickly than before. Expect to queue out the door.
o. h.
Delish food and cues always out the door so be prepared to wait 20 mins or so for a table. Huge portions and sooooo much choice. Amazing food every time! Great for breakfast, brunch and dinner.
H. M.
Good food and nice atmosphere, however staff were too busy chatting to clear dirty plates from our table and we waited ages to pay, before we had to go up and pay. We wouldn't have minded if they were busy, but they were just stood chatting!
L. H.
What a lovely friendly cafe, had the best breakfast here at the weekend. Best breakfast in Newcastle.
J. L.
For the best breakfast in Newcastle you need to visit here! Cosey little place which has interesting decor, service is always pleasant and price is reasonable for what you get. I always go for the traditional fried options but the pancakes are delicious also.
A. H.
Never disappointed!
Lovely food and lovely staff! Best place to have brunch on Sunday especially if you’ve been out on the Saturday!
m.
Superb vegan breakfast -soya strips cooked to perfection with fried potatoes and caramelised onions to share. Coffees also gorgeous and soya milk steamed. Service excellent. Chilled atmosphere
t. b.
Yup. Portions are stonking, staff are flawless. Wonderful menu. Perfection.
c. T.
Great atmosphere, top food @good prices and really lovely staff. Do lunch (or breakfast) here
L. B.
Great portions and amazing food for decent prices, and a huge menu!
D. E. (.
A great place to eat and staff are very friendly. I would have given 5 stars but on my first visit I walked in and the sign said "wait here to be seated", but no one came over for an age to tell us what the wait time would be.
M. S.
Lovely place, quick friendly service, the French omelette was to die for. Will definitely be back.
R. M.
Thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast, but the tables are too close together. No proper disabled loos and the menus, though large in size are restricted in flavour. Plus, they are "quirkily" printed onto blue and pink card, thus unreadable.
E. W.
Had the tuna melt panini with cheese and onion jam with coleslaw and tortilla chips. Absolutely lovely. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. The inside decor is lovely very indie style and cosy..
L. O.
Food was brilliant, we had veggie breakfasts and everything was great. Coffee very good also! Can't recommend them enough
J. N.
Five stars for the food and staff.
Unfortunately when I went to pay I thought I would add the tip onto the card.
Told the staff don't get any of the money paid on the card as tips.
I thought that had been outlawed.
Paid my tip in cash.
S. A.
We were he for breakfast. There was a massive wait to get in because the place is so popular, but it was worth the wait. Would recommend the Apple and cinnamon pancakes. 10/10!
P. 6.
Perfectly cooked breakfast! Had the full English and was unfaultable as was the service.
M.
Came here for brunch, food was delicious. Serves full English breakfast, pancakes and many other luxury brunch items. Had a little queue but that's testament to its popularity
G. L.
Fajita Burger....amazing ❤️ great little find by the family. It's very bijoux but service was fab and it was incredibly busy and vibrant. Will be back again for sure.
B. O.
Get yourself to the butterfly cabinet, that was the best veggie sandwich I’ve ever had the pleasure of cramming in my mouth. Prices were low and the atmosphere was high, definitely returning in the future
B. G.
Really great place to eat. Fantastic food, especially in the morning. Nowhere quite beats it for breakfast!
D. B.
Fantastic decor, great venue, and the food is fantastic. If you get your timings wrong, you may have to queue but it's still worth it.
B. F.
Amazing place. Queued outside in the rain and Lord it was worth it. Best coffee and breakfast I've had in ages. Will come again when I'm next here!
D. R.
The food is okay, competently made and served but not great. They serve a nice cup of tea - but only 3 stars. Difficult to park and there are usually queues to get in at the weekend.
A. J.
Really great food. Helpful friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. Only the queuing really that defects from the 5 star! Not their fault but does regularly ruin an impromptu visit.
H. E.
Fantastic breakfast! Great menu with plenty to choose from. Friendly staff. Reasonably accessible but not the easiest. Very narrow to walk around. Not great for wheelchair.
S. Y.
Huge lovely portions, but bear in mind of the LONG QUEUE! 😅
J. L.
Veggie breakfasts are the best in Newcastle!!! Absolutely amazing staff are super lovely too x
A. G.
Make up your own breakfast is a brilliant idea.
Haven't had white pudding for years it was well worth the wait.
AAG
M. T.
If you come on a weekend or holiday you will be expected to queue. If that's not a sign of a good place to eat I don't know what is. The breakfasts are particularly popular and completely worth the wait.
7.
Amazing food and service. Extremely pleasant staff. Will be returning. As my disabled son says, it’s heaven. ❤️
T. F.
Nice vibe, very tasty coffee and lots of food options. Friendly staff too. Veggie and vegan options with non dairy milk options too. Nice spot!
K. M.
Always rammed (when you see the queue out the door don’t expect to be served soon!). Generous portions ! Go for the smoothie of the day, with a veggie breakfast or go for the Balboa! Rocky not included!
J. P.
Absolutely love this gem of a place, situated in Heaton.!! Food is amazing and very reasonably priced. More than generous portions.Well worth the wait as everyone I've been you have to wait.!!!
I. H.
Food is absolutely delicious, staff is always friendly and polite. One of the best places in Newcastle and my personal go to for brunch.
W. S.
Fab breakfast on Sunday morning. Not surprised there are usually queues out the door. Good selection on the menu and very reasonable prices.
A. S.
Amazing place. Only 4 star as ypu can't book a table which sees ypu having to queue outside quite often which is no good when you're disabled
S. C.
I absolutely adore it here - always has a wonderful atmosphere, FANTASTIC food and the service is polite, friendly and approachable. Wonderful wonderful place. 10/10 ❤❤

m. b.
Fantastic food. Never seen so many choices for breakfast. An excellent place to try!
S. O.
Great food. Absolutely outstanding. Service is a little slow and as a result of how amazing the food is, there is always a que out the door and down the street.
T. K.
Went for breakfast while visiting Newcastle and absolutely loved it. Fantastic environment, great food and friendly staff! I loved the decor and would definitely go back.
J. B.

J. B.
Fantastic food. Have to queue to get seats at busy times and food can take a while to come but it's worth it.
