Reviews of Brew
P. W.
Wonderful independent coffee shop!
The kind of artisan coffee shops you find in trendy locales in big cities.
The coffee was fantastic. My double espresso was rich and fruity, with no hint of bitterness. Whereas my husband's preference of latte, the coffee was beautifully blended with milk - to the point where I (a diehard black coffee drinker) thought it enjoyable.
They serve a few cakes (we had blueberry), and some cold drinks too. They also sell a range of coffee equipment (coffee grinders, cups, filters, and of course aero presses!) And I spotted some lovely coffee cups I almost bought.
With so many coffee shops cropping up in Oxford, it's nice to find one that is stripped back and focused on high quality coffee (rather than interior design and clever, yet annoying, chairs).
It would have been nice to have our coffees in the shop, though it didn't feel like we should! No chairs, but a bench along the window. Hopefully they'll add a couple of small chairs and a small table at some point!
Good place to grab a coffee whilst visiting the knitting shop. Would be better if you could natter about knitting with friends in here after going to said shop!

Had two different experiences at brew so one off star from 5. I loved that there were 3 different pour over coffees and batch brew as well with a ok price for the pour over. Got some coffee as well and when I first visited the male staff was really lovely and we spoke a lot about different coffees and helped me choose the best coffee based on my taste. The second time I visited the female staff was not very friendly and felt a bit like we were nuisance then we were the customer so the customer service this time let us down.
We understood there used to be some seatings? But there seems to be none and wished there were some outside seatings or upstairs? So that we could enjoy the coffee. The coffee was really lovely but having some other brewing techniques could be even nicer to try different techniques. Some student discount or point cards or if you buy coffee beans you can get one coffee for free could have been nice gesture as well.
S. R.
Great coffee, excellent range of fresh pastries and lovely baristas to interact with. It’s a bit out of town, but reasonably close to our Best Western motel. Long hours of operation meant we could have morning and afternoon coffees - flat whites were great.
C. G.
Great little cafe with amazing coffee and baked goods! Staff are always very helpful and friendly. Very good selection of retail coffee available as well!
R. M.
Very nice little coffee shop. I ordered a take away piccolo which was delicious. The lady at the counter was also really friendly. Good place, though not much seating space inside.
O. A.
Small cosy café. Enjoyed my coffee and brownie. Loved the vintage feel of the place. The record player in the corner added to the touch. The only negative was my friends and I had to wait for a while to get our drinks as there was only one person in the Cafe.
D. C.
The perfect coffee shop does exist! On a lovely alley of independent shops, serving outstanding coffee. There is a selection of cakes, and the staff are very friendly. To put the icing on the cake a turntable playing good music. It isn't pretentious or "for hipsters only" though, well worth a visit by all.
Came every day after finding it whilst on a stay in Oxford and wasn't disappointed.
R. H.
Brew always serves fantastic coffee in a friendly atmosphere, and great to be able to buy coffee (and tea) varieties to take the flavour back home
T. D.
Excellent coffee! Potentially the best in Oxford! They also have good pastries.
A.
Really nice little coffee shop wide selection on coffees to choose from lovely staff and lovely banana bread 10/10 will be back
A. H.
Had breakfast here before the start of a working day as part of a collaboration in Oxford as a visitor. Great coffee with tasty pastries to start off the day, it's a very small and cosy space and service was good and attentive.
A. D.
Brew has the best coffee in Oxford! Wonderful cosy little shop, and I appreciate how careful they are with masks etc. Their coffee is consistently extremely tasty, and they have a great selection of teas too.
A. K.
Good coffee and really nice staff. Very relaxing atmosphere. A little small but cosy.
A. M.
Nice independent.. But £8 for two coffees? Mmmmm.
c.
Great coffee, best in Oxford, absolutely the place for coffee nerds. Choice of beans but would like more variety for espresso. Overall, it’s hard to fault
W.
Very nice coffee, both made on site and sold as beans - I've bought a few bags here. Atmosphere is nice, some nice touches in the decor. My criticism is the lack of WiFi for customers - normally this would be a good thing as it prevents people hogging tables all day on their macbooks, but sadly the students are still able to connect to university WiFi. This means I can't get much work done but I also have to look at other people working on macbooks (it always is). In the end I tethered to my phone I can do that anywhere.
Z. B.
Fantastic espresso, stocks beans from top tier roasters, well worth a stop.
M. W.
Love this little coffee shop, found this while staying nearby for a few weeks, staff are all helpful and very friendly and the coffee and pastries are delicious, if you're in the area check it out, you won't be disappointed.
F.
Best coffee in Oxford! Quiet, quaint and cosy space serving excellent coffee. Delicious cakes and cookies. Staff is always friendly and accommodating. Love the fact its on North Parade! Beautiful street specially during typical cold English weather with fairy/string lights paving the way. Close to City centre, Uni Parks, Museums, Jericho, Summertown.
Most frequented stopover for great coffee!
M. S.
Great coffee in a nice setting. Music was played on a record deck which I thought was a nice touch. 'nuff said!
A. S.
Nice little shop. Their flat white is the perfect size - i.e. not too big. Their guest espresso is a welcome touch. Be advised: it's takeaway only right now.
V. W.
Small cozy cafe in North Parade. Great coffee and environment for chats and work.
L. L.
Lovely & cozy place! ❤️ Really enjoyed the vibe there, with the turn table and vinyls! And the coffee was great! I had a very good single shot of Columbia coffee and a flat white! The girls there were very lovely, had a nice chat with them! Also, the place is pet friendly! ❤️ Definitely will come again!
C. B.
Actually the best coffee in Oxford (I've tried most). Thought it might be pretentious before I went, I was wrong and have been going back regularly now for over three years, even after moving away from the area. Staff are, without fail, friendly.
If you enjoy (none Starbucks) coffee... go
T. C.
I am one of Brew’s most loyal customers. Their friendly staff know my order by heart and have always been there for me. They’ve seen me at my worse: sleep deprived, disheveled, and often stressed out with deadlines. They never fail to provide me with a judgement free environment and a cup of hot, delicious batch brew. Halfway on my walk home I begin to wake up and remind myself that “everything will be okay”.
A. J.
Great coffee - which is due to the coffee itself as well as - especially in comparison to other places at Oxford - to the baristas. Apart from being friendly, they know what they do when it comes to pulling shots and foaming. The espresso itself has got a nice balance and my oat milk flat whites have the perfect temperature.
C. R.
Not simply the best, consistently delicious coffee in North Oxford, but a great place to get your coffee education. If you’ve never tried a pour over, this is the place to do so for the first time. Absolutely recommend the piccolo or a large cappuccino (with three shots of espresso) and miso or peanut butter cookie. They’re back at their usual store front on the Parade. Also a large selection of teas.
D. G.
The coffee here is exquisite. The staff really know what they're doing. The shop is also clean and the music isn't too loud. It's easy to have a quiet conversation here. I would say that given the small size of the cafe, this isn't a good place to study or work on a laptop for long periods of time.
R. B.
So far, this place has consistently made the best coffee I've tasted since moving to the UK. They take the time and effort to properly brew your order, and they have a great rotating selection of beans that are well-roasted.
If I had to give a negative, it's that there is very little room in the place. You'll likely not find a seat, but don't let that deter you from getting some of the coffee. It's outstanding.
j. p. g. r.
Even though they have been struggling because of the pandemic (who hasn't). They are still trying to serve their great coffee and offer many different types of brewing devices. The only observation I have is that their flat white is super small but the coffee quality is top!
G. C.
Trip 1:
It's probably better than a 3star rating but due to Covid restrictions I can't give it the full appraisal. Coffee is good and is at "Oxford pricing" but the cup size was a little larger than usual.
I'd love to have gone in but their usual premise was shut and they are vending from 'The Rabbit Hole' down the road. It's a beautiful part of Oxford and promises a lot, but till I can return and see more of it and enjoy the full experience, a 3 star review seems fair. The coffee was good, not exceptional and the staff member I saw was very polite and helpful.
Trip 2:
For context this visit was several months later (April 13th) just as restrictions started to ease.
Much better experience this time getting to go in and see the full experience. The staff member in there was very friendly and the coffee was very much improved, different beans? Who knows who cares? The coffee was excellent and the inside of the store shows how much they care about their offering of teas and coffees, lots of brewing paraphinalia on offer, as well as frisbees (they're near the park!) and to be honest a great spot that I will definitely visit again.
K. P.
Very small, very cosy independent coffeeshop, serving punchy coffee and teas, and rustic cakes. Takeaway only while Covid-19 passes through.
E. W.
It is maybe just me but I usually do not go and leave a review for a Starbucks or a Costa after you pick up my morning drink. Cafes are just a part of our everyday lives, walk in, pay, pick up and leave (sometimes stay) and that's it.
This morning I had the pleasure to have a coffee at Brew in Oxford. A small, independent coffee shop just north of the city centre, hidden on a lovely little street. The place is not the biggest, only a handful of tables. They serve coffee of all sorts, tea, some other drinks and real, home made cakes.
Coffee is just usually coffee but what they do here is something completely new and better than anything I have ever had before. Maybe this is what coffee should be and everywhere else they are just trying. It is difficult to describe how good a coffee can be but imagine eating without salt for years and all of a sudden someone seasons your meal.
From what I saw they put a lot of work and effort into every drink they serve from sourcing and roasting the coffe to the way it is finally brew. Really good quality ingredients put together with a lot of care and the result is just amazing.
Try it with no sugar, do not let it ruin what really coffee should taste like.
Simply an amazing place.
S. T.
Very good coffee, especially pour over (V60), precision brewing and very well roasted beans. Also loved lo-fi vibe, turntable and record selection. Dog & kid friendly! Small selection of pastries but that was fine.
L. S.
Best coffee I've found in Oxford by far. It's a nice place, bit small, but that adds to the charm (as long as it's not laptop village). They clearly knew their brewing methods, and there's a good selection of excellent filters.
And any place that gets their beans from Square Mile and makes the most of it, knows its business.
Too bad it's a bit out of the way, but well worth the effort to get there. Nothing in the centre of Oxford comes close to this place.
S. R.
Brew and Peleton are tied for best coffee in Oxford. Different selection of beans and coffee and both can't be missed!
Y. D.
Amazing coffee, if a bit small, and usually a nice contemporary cake to go with it. The place is quite small but it doesn’t impact the coffee experience. They also sell a small selection of coffee and coffee lovers accessories and books. I like their background music from a record player too, it definitely ads to the atmosphere.
J. J. S.
Lovely small shop, serving Round Hil roastery coffee, on espresso, batch and pour over. Excellent music from LPs and little art deco details in the decor.
E. B.
Tiny coffee shop in a good location between the city centre and Summertown. Perfect for those who work nearby or commute on Banbury road. I
Slightly pricey (typical "artisan" coffee) but it is worth it given that it is the only good coffee shop nearby. They also play jazzy tunes on an record player.
J. J.
My favourite place to have coffee in Oxford. The coffee is excellent, but in some ways this is the least of Brew's virtue. The staff are charming, and there's often good banter among customers. Brew's one of those rare places around which a community has quickly and strongly formed. Also, there's a great little orange record player in the corner spinning tunes.
D. B.
Splendidly independent. Small, quaint, uncompromisingly good coffee. "Welcomes dogs and coffee snobs" so I suppose those are two reasons the place speaks to me. Another advantage is the community of shops adjacent in North Parade Avenue - great atmosphere, especially on a weekend morning.
R. C.
The Coffee was great and they took a lot of care and time to make the perfect drink. The only downside was the lack of seats, but the live record player did help make the shop feel nice and cozy!
K. M.
A wonderful little cafe tucked away just off of North Parade. Amazing ambiance, very friendly staff and high quality coffees, teas and croissants. The chosen music has never disappointed to make me smile. Great spot!
N. B.
This quirky little coffee shop is just wonderful. It has a fun, retro and relaxed atmosphere, complete with a portable record player and eclectic record collection. The owner and main barista is friendly to a fault and makes what genuinely is the best coffee around. Their great single-origin coffee and the little place's community atmosphere is what keeps me coming back. It's also worth the walk away from the main tourist centre of the city, to see the quaint stores on North Parade and get more of a feel for authentic Oxford.
M. W.
Amazing little coffee spot. The staff know their customers, produce excellent coffee (especially the espressos and pour-overs). Vinyl music playing, Within range of eduroam for any academics. Would go back daily if I lived in this town.
E. F.
Great atmosphere in a tiny space, fantastic music, and friendly staff, but be prepared to wait. Baristas work slowly and carefully, leading to long line-ups. This is not a grab and go place. Signature blend is slightly acidic; baristas need to read up a little more about the featured coffee blends enough to provide good advice when asked. Overall, a tidy, friendly place to work on a Sunday morning out of term (when the probability of getting a seat is much higher).
D. B.
Very, very good coffee, and good pastry. Perfect for a quick breakfast.
L. W.
Still the probably best café in Oxford in my opinion. Serves good third wave coffee and has usually always a guest bean which is worth trying! Also try to combine it with one of the nice cakes! For a perfect coffee break :)
P.
At first I loved this hipster coffee retreat, but soon realised the coffee was actually not that good, and was often pretty cold. Also very expensive for not that much. But such a sweet lovely spot with lovely lovely staff so definitely worth checking out.
E. A.
Possibly hte best coffee in Oxford. I think it's the same team who run Ratio Cafe down near the Debenhams in the centre. I love walking here to get a cappuccino and an almond croissant; their pastries come from Gatineau in Summertown, and you should definitely try them. Very small inside - I doubt you could get more than ten people sitting down - but that doesn't really matter when there are so many nice places to go within walking distance!
M. J.
Probably my favourite in Oxford. Very friendly staff, excellent coffee (and milk), and the cakes are a treat.
A must do, especially if you like the cosy, relaxed style :)
Plus, vinyls...
R. S.
Great coffee, great cookies, cool environment
A. B.
A hidden little gem. I’ll start with the bad things: no much food options, uncomfortable and little seating. Nonetheless, this place deserves a full 5 stars. Amazing coffee, great atmosphere and the most attentive baristas ever.
F. B.
Brew is a small espresso bar styled cafe with quite a retro machine that while eccentric, still makes very nice coffee. I think they would do to open earlier however as 9.30 is quite a late start to the day.
M. R.
Nice little specialty coffee and tea room (literally just one room), in a cosy street! Good coffee, good music (on vinyl) playing and had no issues with service at all!
L. Y.
Lovely coffee
Takeaway only
D. R.
Top notch coffee, small but excellent selection of cake. Quirky lovely place. Very narrow door will not suit prams though.
S. C.
Best coffee in town, real coffee experts and very nice independent retailer
C. P. M.
The coffee is good, but the shop has very limited seating space and one feels pressured to leave quickly so that new customers can sit down.
E. A.
I love this cosy little cafe. It has delicious cakes and legendary hot chocolate. I go here all the time to work or meet a friend. It's got a lovely vibe and cosiness to it. Love it!
M. F.
Perfect little coffee shop with great coffee and a nice cosy vibe. It's small, so can be difficult to get a seat if you want to drink in. The staff are very friendly
T. G.
The coffee is terrific, 5-stars. And they're always playing great music. The only downside is that aside from that it's a bit lacking in space and atmosphere.
K. R. J.
Best coffee in Oxford. But a bit tiny and noisy if you want to sit and work. Good for writing a quick letter or a chat.
B. F.
Wonderful atmosphere with a vinyl-playing stereo, espresso starts at £1.70 and cake slices are often about £3 to have in
J. P.
Great coffee in a cozy spot. Not much room but comfortable. Friendly staff with nice music on the turntable.
M. M.
Best cafe in all of Oxford. Nowhere else can you find better coffee, better staff, or a better environment. The city’s hidden gem.
G. B.
Best tasting coffee in oxford, hands down. Not that many places to sit though! They sell great little cards too.
K. S.
Best coffee in Oxford. Small, cosy. Difficult find out my seat. But I love this shop.
B. T.
A wet, grey day lifted a little by a fine flat white, in a decent little cup, accompanied by Velvet Underground on the deck.
C. A.
Top notch coffee, but a lack of space. However if you're just there for a great cup, then you'll be very happy
S. A. K.
Nice place, nice people. Coffee okay. Very chill ambiance. Little room. Grows on you. Try the cinnamon rolls.
g. a.
Love their coffee so much ,I do think the prices are a bit too high but good quality
K. T.
Decent coffee but the place itself is too tiny. Feels like you are sitting at the same table with everyone else:)
B. M.
Amazing to watch them brew the coffee, they weigh it all and have a unique machine, the raisin roll was decent but that is saying something when getting a pastry in England
K. L.
Had a very nice cappuccino last week great atmosphere, nice little find just before going into the city. Price is fair too.
M. L. F.
Arfur and his team make, I truly believe, the finest coffee in Oxford
R. G.
Great coffee, fresh pastries. Tiny though, and hard seating doesn't really encourage hanging around.
A. R.
A tiny and lovely café just outside the old town center. No wifi, but great coffee.

(Translated) It had been a long time since I enjoyed a coffee shop so much. The place is small but big at heart. They always treated me with great vibes, it was my place to have breakfast for almost a full month. I would go very early in the morning to finish my studies and when the smell of coffee arrived and the record player on, I turned my mornings into a beautiful ritual. I recommend their latte and their cinnamon rolls, it is my favorite combination. Baristas care a lot about the result of the product they deliver to you, the bakeries are fresh and almost always freshly baked. It has a small shop for ground coffee, cups and other items to prepare it manually.
