Reviews of Brown's Cafe
D. V.
Finally made it to this popular cafe! I live how historic this location is and the variety of traditional breakfast choices!! I love the sign stating that they try to get every item from other vendors in the covered market as well :)! The small breakfast was a good size but felt beans were a bit over powering. Having some mushrooms or choices of having both tomato and beans will make it even better. The tiffin was nice and the food came out quickly as well. Would have loved to try the apple pie but for the next time! Having two entrances could maybe help with some congestions in the entrance.

Full service cafe/diner with all day breakfast. Two styles of English breakfast. I chose the May Day because it included black pudding. Everything was very good.
M. M.
A bit of local history, very much now aimed at the tourist trade. Had a breakfast batch and other half poached egg on toast. Was very small portion for a steep price. And was for sure not the best ever experienced with chap bacon sausage and egg used. Still clinging on to the feel of the past but you get they want to do more than be a nutty shop.
I wouldn't go in again but wouldn't tell people to avoid either as it is pleasant enough and if you are on holiday and want a bit of cultural history then it does have bags of atmosphere.
All clean and tidy, staff friendly and food so so. Not sure what else there is locally to there that is a greasy spoon. When j am next in town will make it a mission to find out and compare

Me and the wife stopped at this lovely little cafe for a little bite for lunch. Both baguettes cook perfectly. 100% recommend
l. l.
Nice English breakfast, apple pie which isn't too sweet was a little surprise for us, good value for money, staff are very friendly and helpful, a must go!
h.
Such a gem of a place. Straightforward food, clean, prompt service, reasonably priced and with friendly and attentive staff. The home made cakes and pastries are also excellent especially the apple pie.
L. B.
My absolute favourite place in Oxford. I don't care if its cramped, dated and sometimes a bit too manic - their Cottage Pie and Chips here is legendary. The dinner of champions, right there.
L. T.
Good value breakfasts and lunches, very useful central location in covered market, central Oxford. Friendly staff, clean. Always very quick service. Much recommended.
L. S.
We had a lovely full English breakfast and later in the day I had a cream tea and my husband had a huge piece of apple pie with custard. Very nice food excellent service.
K. C.
I had eggs on toast with beans.
And a latte. You order at the counter and they bring it to the table. Friendly service. The food was good and prompt.
M. W.
Perfect spot for a hearty bite! I had the omelet + coffee and my little one had eggs on toast which was ideal for us on a blustery morning 😋
I. K.
Really lively cafe.
The fresh home-made scones are delicious especially when warm. And all the other deserts (classics and Portuguese treats) look delicious too.
Perfect for a brunch or lunch.
Friendly service where you have to go up to the counter to order.
Both the beef lasagne and cottage pie were great with quite large sides.
Moderately priced.
It can get quite busy especially in the weekend so you might have to take away.
س. د.
It’s a gem in the neighborhood! Great great prices, a variety of dishes, relative big portions! The food is not the tastiest dish you’ve ever had, but it is good enough. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff are super friendly. Highly recommended.
K. M.
Absolutely lovely. Very simple cafe that serves fresh foods and released within minutes. There staff are friendly, professional and accommodating!
A. L.
Traditional English breakfast. Great food with reasonable prices and good service.
V. T. L. N.
The May Day breakfasts are delicious.
L.
Good priced British cafe. Small seating area on outside and inside the building. Offer good fried breakfast and baps.
P. T.
Excellent mini breakfast, lovely egg and fried bread, sausage was a bit naff though.
Coffee strong and delicious.
M. F.
Very nicely cooked eggs (fried), which is unusual! There were some loud people in at the same time, which the hard ceiling didn't cope with well
V. W.
We enjoyed a great late lunch on a weekday afternoon. Good atmosphere for conversation. Staff are friendly too. Will visit again in future.
N. M. L.
This is a traditional, classic and worthy place to eat English food. The pies are great, the dishes are big and the service is good and fast. A very tasty and affordable option.
M. D.
Going into cafe close by, their card reader was so cheap it asked for a security code that it could not take, so I walked out to come in here. Their card reader did the job, so in this covered market I have seen alot of cheap cafes, this seems at first glance to be the best of a bad lot.
D.
Good honest food served by helpful and willing staff. Highly recommended.
M. J.
Apart from the new counter it's a hark back to the past of the covered market. Good value for money good and young and friendly staff
B. A.
Really yummy omelets and good selection of hot and cold drinks
B. C.
Excellent breakfast including fried bread.
Fast friendly service from polite staff
Highly recommended.
O. S.
Good English Breakfast, reasonably priced, staff efficient and friendly. Filter coffee is good. My destination for late breakfasts and hangover cures!
S. “. H.
I don't want to seem harsh but it's like a good old greasy spoon.
A friendly service and the orders came out quickly, the cuppa went down really well.
D. T.
Friendly staff, good prices and a menu including old fashioned favourites eg sausage egg & bacon sandwich. Well worth a visit.
T. G.
Great food, great service
Recommend a visit if in the area 👍
A.
Great coffee and bacon bap. Friendly staff and a great location in the Covered Market
K. K.
Service was fast and efficient. Lovely cosy café. Food was okay, bacon a lil too much on the crispy side. But otherwise great value for money and worth a visit.
E. G.
No fancy Oxfordian nonsense here just good honest nosh.
A. S.
Great Breakfast with very good hot coffee.
Price good and quality of food excellent.
Best fried bread I have tasted in long time!!
M. D.
So far so good. Cooked the bacon really well no fat. When I complained about lack of brown sauce in those caches that do nothing but dirty your shirt I got a dish of brown sauce.
J. S.
Adorable English breakfast, well served, nice customer service and unforgettable atmosphere
D. L.
I've been coming to Brown's Cafe in the Covered Market for decades—it's cozy, super-affordable, down-to-earth, completely unpretentious, and the food is always fresh and delicious. Brown's is one of my favourite breakfast spots in the world! P.S. Their pastries are *very* good, especially the egg custard tart and the custard doughnut
K. L.
Traditional British breakfast, warm service, local environment. Will visit again!
R. c.
They have gluten free and dairy free products
M. N.
The Portuguese fish cake is excellent, seems not many people try it, recommend~~
Also, very reasonable price too~~
M.
Absolutely love this place.
Food is tasty and staff lovely.
I like that this is not noisy place as I am myself person with Aspergers and in some restaurants it's so loud I cannot focus.
This place is perfect for me and I will be definitely back
J. K.
Proper traditional English cafe. Good quality sandwiches and breakfasts and really good prices! Friendly staff and good service
R. B.
I went to Oxford for the first time and was hungry whilst looking around the market.
I saw this cafe and thought it looked good enough so had LAMB shank with chips and rice. I was given quite a BIG POT OF TEA FOR ONE which was great. It was a lovely meal and the staff was courteous and friendly.
I would highly recommend here for a FAIR PRICED MENU whether you're having sandwiches or dinner.
P. K.
An affordable and non-nonsense option for eating in Oxford. It always used to be a traditional English "greasy spoon" cafe, and it still offers all-day breakfast etc., but it now seems to have Portuguese owners to judge by the pastries on offer. I had a chicken and chorizo baguette, which was very unimpressive: it came with no salad, just a squirt of mayo, the chorizo tasted like it came out of a supermarket packet (certainly not freshly sliced from a chorizo sausage), and the bread was slightly undercooked; for £4.50 there are much better sandwiches to be had in the covered market. It's probably best to stick to the Full English Breakfast.
S. N.
Brilliant place to get a full English breakfast. Very reasonable prices and cooked fresh, so far superior to pub food. Served all day!
R. W.
Great typical old style cafe. Fast service and spotlessly clean. Fair prices. Would we revisit?……….Yes! (I rarely give *****as there is always room to improve!)
d. h.
Food was okay but not very hot! Had cottage pie.
R. L.
Great service, great food and great value. The homemade steak, kidney and mushroom pie was spot on and the portions were generous. Highly recommended!
K. C.
Good breakfast, friendly staff.
N. C.
Had two lovely breakfast's well worth the money thanks
C. P.
It could be crowded at some hours but still an excellent place to take a drink.
P. T.
Very busy but the staff were really helpful.
T. G.

J. H.
Has a lovely cheese jacket potato and salad.
D. S.
Good quality food , reasonable price and friendly staff !
J. J.
Absolutley fantastic food...
Fantastic value for the money...
Frendly staff and good service
c. t.
I walked in and believed that it had a really homey feeling to it, and the staff were really nice and welcoming.
It's not easy to find un-sweetened orange juice as good as the one I had! I will deffinatley want to try that again!
They can really really improve on their apple pie... I looked it and I was like " OMG! Home made apple pie!". It tasted a lot like they put a very minimum amount of effort into making it. The pastry layer is supposed to kind of like sandwich the apples and they really tasted like they were not properly baked ( not left in the oven long enough ). The pastry was not crispy and aromatic either. They can think about making some bolo do caco, and putting it on the menu...
j. j.
Great staff good food. Only place to have breakfast
B. L.
Lovely place to stop for a pot of tea and scone 😊 to warm up after the open air bus tour. Friendly staff. Great spot.
B.
Greasy spoon in Covered Market doing good no frills English breakfasts. Black pudding particularly good. Also some Portuguese tarts and pastries as a welcome addition reflecting the owners' heritage I think. But definitely no "lobster nights" here - that's a different Browns.
D. M.
This is the oldest cafe in Oxford. Great for a coffee and a nice piece of cake. Not as crowded as the high street coffee shops and great if you're shopping in the covered market.
D. G.
Brilliant fry up. Would give 10 stars.
D. S.
Great full English breakfast.
H. W.
Such a lovely, friendly cafe. Staff are helpful and smiley and the food is good quality and well priced. My family loves this place!
g. v.
Great real cafe great espresso bacon sandwich or sausage sandwich and fantastic paste De natta (Portuguese custard tarts) and lovely service, a must on an Oxford visit
A. B.
You will always receive friendly service here and they do brilliant food as well. A perfect place to have a quick bite to eat when in Oxford!
A. C.
Does not look like a typical Portuguese cafe, but it is run by a Portuguese family. They have the amazing Delta coffee and some traditional sweets, like pastéis de nata, bolos de arroz, queijadas.
The breakfast menu is very nice and cheap.
Definitely recommend.
n. b.
Memory lane time....great food served by friendly staff
R. W.
Great food. Very popular for Saturday brunch, but sufficient seating.
J. K.
Perfect city centre cafe that has changed very little since I used to come here regularly back in the 80's. Great for picking up some local vibe in a break from shopping in the market. Dont miss the perfect builders tea!
L. S. M.
Reasonably priced usual hangover cures, full englishes and burgers and whatever else you want fried. It works. One quirk is that the place is run by Portuguese people, so they have some quite authentic Portuguese foods, like fish cakes and custard tarts, at not terrible (for the UK) prices. Tea and cakes in the afternoon when nobody is in there is cheap, and the views out across the other shops are nice.
J. W.
Now this is a real cafe . You get exactly what you pay for not over priced So when we visit Oxford we go there for a good old-fashioned fry up
M. Y.
Just popped in for a cuppa and cake, nice place with friendly staff, clean and welcoming.

Disappointed with the English breakfast on offer as the sausages were pretty rank, no flavour to them at all.
S. W.

R.
Nice place to eat, good food and a good selection. Service is very good and nice staff.

Although it took a little while to order food due to Brown's popularity when it was served it which wasn't a long wait the food was simply delicious

(Translated) It was a lovely cafe where you could taste home made dish. We ordered spaghetti. When we visit there next time with our kid, we'd like to try lots of different menus. A cup of tea and scone will also be nice to taste.
The price was reasonale. Actually, we were very surprised to see this place in one of the recent dramas and it made us think about the moment we had a lunch there. Next to this cafe, all shops are lovely, too! Take your time and look around here. Oxford is beautiful. Lots of love from Korea. :)
I was really glad that this cafe appeared in the background in the latest British drama a few days ago. The price was also very good. Spaghetti We ate a cup of spicy food, but it seems to be a place filled with memories ... There is a market next to this cafe and there are so many things to see and take time to look around slowly ~ ~ next time I want to eat tea and homemade scones. :)

📍92 The Market, Oxford OX1 3DY, UK
This restaurant with good quality and low price is really delicious. The average person is about 8.5 pounds. It was the first time I ate fish and chips in the UK. Now slowly accept the practice of beans. The steak ordered by my friend has a smoky taste. It tastes really salty. It will be better with boiled water! There are a lot of local people, and it seems that the reputation is really good!
