We called in at The Guard Room for breakfast before travelling home from Plymouth after traveling from Brittany on the ferry. We are really glad we did - the breakfast was really excellent! I went for the full English and my wife had the vegetarian breakfast - both were excellent. We were able to sit outside by the water - a lovely view. The staff were great and the surroundings lovely. A great experience!

The place is really nice. Food is first class as is service and atmosphere. Inside is quirky with lots of maritime themes as it would be bearing in mind it is situated on the banks of the river Plym in Plymouth. It is as excellent as it's sister cafe across the river " the Mess rooms " which is thoroughly recommended. In short, if you want to go to a friendly place for a lovely meal with a coffee/ soft drinks... you couldn't do better.

Lovely food, freshly prepared. A good setting despite being a gloomy day. Free parking across the road. Excellent menu throughout the day. Sitting area outside for when the weather allows. Warm, friendly staff. Very accommodating menu for vegetarians.

Although the outside of the Guard Room looks umpromising the inside is well fitted out with excellent views over the Cattewater towards Laira Bridge. My full English Breakfast arrived in 7 minutes and was certainly good value. As with so many cafes though, the mushrooms need to be improved along with the temperature. Why do most cafes struggle with this? That aside I am happy to give this local cafe 5 stars as it is certainly well above average offering good value.

Cozy place and a nice location to stop on a walk. It may look slightly 'intimidating' from the outside because it's in a more residential area meaning more locals, but staff and customers were lovely.

Lovely venue with a view over mountbatten and Oreston Quay. Seating inside and out. Cosy. Food generally good but my chilli chicken ciabatta was a little underfilled last time I went and saltless crisps are just a waste of time, at least put salted as a garnish, but that's just my preference.

Very good service, especially considering how busy it was. Very friendly, good quality breakfast at a reasonable price. Highly recommended. The only thing I didn't see was hand sanitizer on the way in/out, but they cleaned tables as soon as they were vacated. Certainly be going back for a great breakfast.

Really nice place to while away an hour, there is indoor seating with a really nice atmosphere plus seating outside on an attractive terrace overlooking the water and old barracks. Excellent food & drink, their breakfasts are delicious and plentiful, cakes are pretty damn good too !!! They are not the cheapest place in Plymouth for a coffee or a fry up but It can be justified in my opinion due to the excellent quality ingredients they use and food cooked with a sense of pride. Keep up the good work ! 👏

A lovely place in an interesting part of Plymouth, overlooking the water. Seating is indoors as well as an attractive terrace outside which I imagine is even lovelier in spring and summer. We had sausage and egg sandwiches - proper sausages. The rest of the menu looked really good, from pancakes to full English or smashed avocado. The staff were great too.

Just wanted to feedback on someone who posted about the price of the bacon roll and that they preferred The Mess Room. In the middle of a Pandemic, think that person should have just spoken to the hard working people in The Guardroom and also they should just be very grateful that the lovely staff are there to supply items to them . On that note , you would be hard pushed to find a better bacon roll any where plus coffee ,lovely . Remember if you consider posting a negative feedback on here , speak to a business first as small businesses like this are doing their very best in very tough times ie a global Pandemic and deserve and should expect our support. Our dog and I visited yesterday after a very long walk and it was an oasis at the end of it ! So thank you all for the fabulous job you are doing and especially bacon rolls, coffees and not forgetting Happy slices ! Keep very safe and looking forward to sit downs in the hopefully not to distant future . 😃. Your regulars love you and will keep coming back 😊. PS .. someone else whinged 5 hours ago … 🙄🙄🙄why don’t you just speak to staff rather than bleat on here .. they all work really hard … and are lovely people .. have a good week 😀

What a great experience went for a breakfast with wife and Son who works next door fantastic breakfast and the owner and her staff are great with outstanding customer service a must visit. Now waiting for Friday for my Son to pick up my slice of Guiness cake. Well worth a visit they have free parking too.

Travelled down from Brighton to visit family, so not a regular but can honestly say this was the best breakfast I can remember having out. All home made or locally sourced and for those concerned about covid there is a strict staff mask policy and if you are wondering around inside they ask that you wear yours too (not when sitting/eating). Really nice place with great service!

Fantastic little place in an ideal setting looking along the lake. Very popular so expect a little wait. Good hearty breakfast and real coffee. Dog friendly so come along with your pooch. Went for breakfast with family. Breakfast served till 12.

Really good cafe with views out over the Plym estuary and Plymouth Sound. The menu was interesting; my Persian Halloumi Salad (halloumi, bulgar wheat, cranberries, caramelised onion, leaves and dressing) was really tasty and different. My wife's fish finger sandwich was made with soft, thick granary bread, tartare sauce and leaves; definitely not a bland offering. Service was both friendly and efficient. With only outdoor seating allowed at the moment, a table on the outdoor decking was fine, especially with such a good view and a sunny day. The only downside was an unusually strong wind which threatened to steal our food away more than once. We shall definitely be visiting the Guard Room again.
