Reviews of Board in the City CIC
Y. C.
One of my favourite places in Southampton!
Everyone’s incredibly friendly and will always give recommendations and facilitate games. They’ve got a massive selection split into group type, so you can find something even if there’s only two of you. They’ve also got a chalk board to give you recommendations based on what you already know and like.
The food was really good too, we got cheesy chips and milkshakes (regular milkshakes not thick shakes), which we enjoyed.
Value for money is great too, it’s only £3 each to play. We had two shakes, two drinks, and chest chips, and the total with admission came to £23, so it’s also ideal for a cheap evening out 😊

Came to Southampton for a weekend break with my girlfriend and went here for an evening as we both love board games.
It had a great atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and welcoming, explaining any games we weren't sure of.
We were recommended The Rose King (2 player) and we absolutely loved it!
We would definitely come back here if near again.
There selection of games was also fantastic, could have easily spent a whole day there.
S. R.
Board games, nice drinks, decent menu - very welcoming atmosphere every time we go.
Very special chips, highly recommend them!

In a word, Quality.
Never have I been to a more welcoming place, brilliant staff, excellent food and drink, amazing facilities!
If youre in the area I would recommend popping in and having At least a hot drink.
I also recommend coming down for Friday night magic, dnd sessions or warhammer games!
Finally, if I private game is more your style they have an excellent function room for hire as well as hireable DM'S.
A MUST VISIT PLACE IF YOU'RE IN TOWN!

Really cool place to hang out/ play some board games. They have a HUGE selection of board games (hadn't heard of most) so I imagine you can find anything you're looking for. Definitely recommend if you're into board games/ want something fun to do with friends. Staff/volunteers are really nice, will definitely return!

I visited BitC with friends who are regulars and had a great time. The game selection is unparalleled, as they had games I never expected to see in the wild in the U.K. The food and drinks were great and fairly priced. And, most importantly, the staff and general environment were welcoming and friendly.
Hope to visit again.
S.
Brilliant collection of games and fantastic staff. Also a good selection of food and drinks.
T. D.
Great place with a huge range of games and good food. The staff were really welcoming and we had an enjoyable family games evening.

If you need a safe, amazing, caring space to go geek out, this is it! Amazing folks, massive collection of boardgames and good food. Southampton is lucky!

What a lovely place to wile away the hours! An amazing team of people ready to set you up, advise and get you experimenting with different games from their huge collection. Great value as well

From card games to board games to working as a teM or against each other. This place has all the game's you can play. Sorry no computer games. Don't need to book in advance you can walk right in. No need to come with people as they can ask other people who are already there to join you in their games. Great way to meet new people and make friends. They serve food and drinks at reasonable prices. If you like the game, you can buy it or order it if out of stock. Very friendly staff who are happy to teach you the rules and introduce you to other related games for you to try. £3 entry. Minimum charge of £5 if paying by card. Opens till 23:00 apart from Sunday which closes at 21:00.

Amazing service! I booked a room for DnD for my partners birthday and we all had an absolutely wonderful time. All the staff were polite, attentive and went above and beyond to help make the night fantastic. The food was all delicious and they catered to all our allergies with ease. Definitely going back! Thanks guys 👍
M. W.
Awesome place to go to relax with friends and play from a huge selection of board games. Awesome and inclusive place, wish there was a hundred more of them.
B. E.
A welcoming place with staff who are always happy to help and recommend a new game if you're not sure what to play. Good food too!
R. L.
Lovely boss had a great chat with him and he gave us a tour and told us the back sorry if the place, will 100% be coming back and great selection of cider
A. W.
Lovely staff, great way to spend an afternoon. Big selection of games and staff very happy to help out with suggestions or explanations
C. P.
Friendly, helpful, fun and relaxed experience.
If you want cheap fast food don't come here! The food is reasonably priced and cooked to order.
The drinks menu is imaginative with some home made soft drinks, very good coffees and plenty more to choose from.
The staff are friendly and helpful -good at helping with games rule queries.
The stock of games to choose from is amazing, encompassing everything from simple children's games to highly complex strategy games.
There is something here for everyone.
C. M. P.
Highly reccomend this place! Amazing atmosphere, friendly and great staff, great service, fun games! I went here for the first time today, absolutely loved it. Definitely worth the money and the prices are very fair! Their hot chocolates are the best hot chocolate I've ever had. Enjoyed it so much today. Definitely coming again! Highly reccomend this place!
J. H.
Vibrant yet cosy social space. The variety of board games on offer is fairly impressive.
The prices are extremely reasonable, especially given they are a NFP. They've rapidly become my go-to for all of my Magic the Gathering needs, and I've been blown away by the standard of service I've received with each and every purchase.
The location isn't the best, but you have to remember that they're a NFP, and they do a lot with what they have. The interior belies the exterior, and it really is a lovely social space.
The work that these guys do, from providing a much needed social space to the City through to helping the most vulnerable members of our community, I cannot overstate how integral Board in the City is to the city of Southampton.
If you're in the area, have an interest in board and card games and want to help a really good cause, check them out!
J. L.
Been to BitC a handful of times and consistently enjoyed myself. The staff are friendly and helpful and will enthusiastically recommend and explain new games for you to play. It is a very good value for money and has such a wide selection of games. Can't recommend it more!
K. B.
An absolute blast! The staff were amazingly accommodating and helpful and the over all feeling of the place was great.
There was a lot going on but we never felt it distracted us from what we were doing or took away from the atmosphere.
On top of this the food was great and served up with an extra helping of good customer service.
Definitely will go again when I’m in the area and recommend anyone else who’s even remotely interested in games to go in and check it out.
Places like this need support!!
R. S.
It's a fantastic place to have fun with family or with friends. Lots of boardgames and kind staff
D. R.
If you love some table top action this is the place to be. Not played board games in a while, give it a try. 4 hours just fly by, food and drink good quality and really reasonable. Best reason to visit Southampton.
A. A.
Awesome concept, cool place. I'd love to see a bigger drinks menu to complement the tasty food. I'll definitely be back regularly to fill up my loyalty card!
G. B.
Board in the City continues to be my families absolute favourite place to visit in Southampton. The range of games and friendliness of staff is amazing. If you like board or card games definitely visit.
R. Z.
Great place to spend your weekend. Friendly stuff, lots of games to try. Tasty coffee. We are regulars here, as there is not much to do in Southampton if you don’t go to clubs or pubs and want some quality time with your partner! We love it and thank you for your efforts!
A. D.
Just absolutely out of this qorld for service and food. Board games, well, 900 plus ro choose from.
H. J.
This cafe is AMAZING!
The home made food is so good, and you can tell every ingredient is good quality. Recently changed to a new summer menu and I would highly recommend the lamb burger! Also, make sure you try the homemade lemonade - I even saw the barman squeeze the lemons to make him lemon syrup!
And then it comes to the games... now, I am not a hardcore gamer, and so thought this wouldn't appeal to me (dragged in by my husband!). But how wrong was I!? One of their volunteer "games masters" sat with us to teach us some really good games, definitely a lot of games that bridge the gap between Top Trumps and Twighlight Imperium! Failing that, there is a handy wall art which gives you a flow chart to find a game to play... #cashnguns
I would really recommend a visit - and it is highly contagious!
j. d.
Old, Rustic, Classic. what more could you ask for! loved visiting this place for the furst time lovely family run project. if you have ever said to yourself i loved playing that board game wish i could play it again, this is the place for you!
H. T.
Been a few times, the staff are always very friendly and helpful. Great fun for all the family and the foods great. Definitely a favourite for us
A. D.
This place is amazing! The staff are very helpful and friendly. An amazing selection of board games. We had the private room and had access to a TV for video games, and the audio and lighting system. The food came late but was very good, so check on the waiting times when ordering. If we didn’t have to leave for other plans we could have stayed all day.
J. B.
This place is just fantastic. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was brilliant and their wide range of games was perfect for everyone. The real thing that makes this place 5 stars though is really the staff. They are the nicest people ever, cater for your every need, they genuinely care about you having a good time. Simply brilliant. If I lived locally I'd be there every week.
J.
I'm utterly in love with this place! They have so many games, so many food and drink options, and they run so many events. The monthly quiz is the highlight of my month :) The staff are always so kind and sweet, and always go the extra mile. The prices for everything are really really low, and they do great work in the community. I really can't recommend this place enough!
T.
Very enjoyable cafe with a vast selection of boardgames and card games. Went there with my dad and we spent three hours there like it was nothing, enjoyed a coffee followed by a beer or two. Staff is friendly and a very welcoming environment. The café itself is a non profit, therefore don't expect luxury tables and outfitting, it gets the job done and it does so in a cozy way.
A family run business with a great idea, and fantastic execution. I'm definitely going to be visiting here again, it makes for a very fun date/day out, as you'll have enough boardgames to lose yourself. Just make sure to pick the right one!
A. L.
A great space for our climactic showdown! Staff couldn't have been more accomodating and food was excellent
A. M.
So much fun! Great customer service too.
M. M.
This is a wonderful place, fantastic food, friendly staff and such an amazing collection of games. Please do yourself a favour and visit
C.
This place is pretty cool if you like board games, which I do. It boasts around 700 games to choose from, serves beer and I've never had any trouble getting a seat. The food looks a little shonky, but it's all made fresh and homemade. Overall if you have an evening to while away with some nerdy friends this is a perfect place to do it.
E. B.
Absolutely fantastic!! They helped us to organise a surprise party for someone. We were a very large group but they made sure we were all well looked after. The games masters were great!! The community feel was wonderful and we all had the loveliest day!!
D. D. C.
Great food, amazing staff and have plenty of board games for if you want to make a day of it.
C. L.
I had a fantastic time at their quiz night, great atmosphere with attentive and friendly staff.
P. D. C.
The pub is nice, with a good choice of bottled beer, and a decent choice of food. The food isn't actually great, but it's okay as a side for the "main dish": board games. The choice is huge, and you will certainly find your favourite game to play with friends. Note that the entrance isn't free, but this is understandable once considered the nature of such a pub. If you and your friends or family like board games, it is a perfect choice.
З. И.
Great place! Hidden gem. So many games to choose from. So much fun to be had. Rather small menu, but its cheap and you get occasional reminders to order and not get carries away. You have to pay a fee upon sitting down i believe during weened and at a certain time of evening which is £3pp. Goes to charity they say so more than happy to donate to a noble cause! Recommended!
I. C.
Warm and friendly staff. Welcoming and knowledgeable Magic the Gathering players and good atmosphere. One star off for single large toilet which could be subdivided into male/female but it's a non-profit so I understand. Now one of my favourite places in the city centre!
T. F.
This place is awesome. Spacious. Lots of games to choose from. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable on games. The food and drink here is tasty and very reasonably priced too. Top venue!
E. W.
Amazing not for profit board game cafe! 60% of takings go towards local community projects for young people. Volunteers are so friendly and helpful. Drinks are delicious. Wide variety of games to play. Cane for my birthday and we had a whale of a time! Definitely going back!
D. C.
Great atmosphere, good food, amazing selection of games, and it's all very reasonably priced.
S. G.
What to say about this place. I go there a lot for their Magic the Gathering events. The staff are mostly quite friendly although some of them struggle with customer service skills and the kitchen goes into meltdown with any volume of orders. As a community resource providing supportive work opportunities for those who would struggle otherwise and a place to sate your inner geek it is great, give it a go !
J. S.
Lovely non for profit cafe and organisation with a massive variety of games to play and buy. Decent drinks and food, with the added bonus of a friendly staff who run a fantastic quiz once a month. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is bored in the city!
K. R.
Loved the atmosphere. Lived the design. The only nick pick I can say is that my vegan pizza didn't look very well done in comparison not my friends pizza. But will 100% visit again.
H. H.
Friendly, inclusive nonprofit offering an extensive library of board games and a good range of food and drink with lots of vegan and vegetarian options. Kitchen is a little slow, but it's worth the wait. I especially like the milkshakes!
C. a.
Kept driving past this place and meaning to go in. Went after Xmas and they specially opened up early. We spent 4 hours here (and could have easily spent another 4). We were in a group of 11 of which 2 were children of 5 and 3. Loads of selection for all ages. You don't need to be in a big group. Lots of help from the volunteers and helpful advice. Great experience. Only downside is limited food options but they still rustled us up some tasty bacon sandwiches, cheesy chips, nachos and cake. Would highly recommend and will be going again!
N. B.
Been meaning to go here with friends for sometime. It was great fun with helpful staff and a good selection of drinks on offer. The number of games available is amazing and are neatly organised into genres and type. The place does look like it needs a bit of love but for a non profit establishment you can accept that. Will definitely visit again!
M. R.
So much fun, such friendly, helpful staff, great atmosphere, FANTASTIC games selection - what more could you ask for?? Absolutely brilliant place, love it so much!
H. B.
Fantastic range of games. Great staff that will help you pick out the right game for you and help you learn the rules. The service is convenient with a great range of food and the tab makes it so easy. You can spend hours here and the time just fly's by. I can't recommend it enough!
K. R.
Staff are very friendly and helpful. They have some delicious homemade soft drinks, I love their homemade lemonade with raspberry. The food is so tasty and they cater well for vegetarians and gluten free needs etc. For meat lovers try their huge pork chops which are beautiful cooked. For those wishing to try a few tabletop game they have games masters on hand to help.
G. A.
This is a board game cafe, where you can play a wide variety of board games while having tea, coffee, snacks, or a full meal. It has a £5 entry fee after 4pm (to help pay for the games) but you can pay £6 to get entry and any drink on the menu, which is really good value! The food is all home made, healthy, and cheap. They have several friendly staff who offer advice on games to play and rules, but who are never obtrusive. If only I lived in Southampton, I would come every week!
J. C.
Superb board game Cafe, was welcomes by the owner who was absolutely lovely, given a tour of the spacious rooms and then offered a selection of (and instruction in) a few fun starter games - spent a good few hours there but had to leave as we were only visiting the area but would love to go back. Oh excellent beverages as well and although we left before eating the food smelled great!
J. H.
Lovely welcoming atmosphere with excellent and helpful staff. Food is reasonably priced, and a huge selection of games to choose from! Lovely place to go, will definitely come back next time I'm in Southampton.
d.
This place has exceptionally helpful and accommodating staff, I booked their specific RP room, and they talked me through all the options and weren't pushy about anything. I've come here when not directly booking the room as well (Which is well worth the money) and it's a fantastic, relaxed environment with a tonne of games to choose from, you'll be spoiled for choice. Thank you again to all the staff for making it a great experience!
A. R.
Really great place for meeting friends and playing board games. The food is amazing and the staff are knowledgeable about the various games. I've been there several times and would highly recommend it.
P.
Absolutely amazing place to spend your evening, they have got so many amazing board games and not only that, they seem to have an endless amount of knowledge of them.
The food is also pretty nice, I tend to eat 90% of the time I got there and I haven't been disappointed yet.
B. C.
Great community-run cafe with amazing array of games to play. Food is quite expensive for what you get (and a bit hit or miss at that) - this would drag the rating down further if the staff and atmosphere was not as fantastic as it is. Note there is an entry fee of £3 for 3hrs plus an extra £1 each hour after - this is waived if you spend £15 on games/food/drink.
r. p.
Amazing place would definitely recommend to anyone that like a good boardgames, so much to choose from.
j. c.
What a great place!!! Very friendly staff, great venue. Pop in for a short game and stay all afternoon whilst enjoying a coconut milkshake (highly recommend this). Good to bring kids too.
D. M.
TL:DR - Great place, great for the community but needs to sleeve its cards!
Environment: It's a great little (well not so little) place across 4 rooms with comfy chairs and large tables. Acoustics are great too so even with two tables of people talking next to us and dice rolling we could still hear what was going on. The have some great little things like a meeple of the week, custom artwork done by the community, all with a story behind it and a meeple table number and die salt shaker - all seemingly homemade! All this gives an amazing setting to play some games!
Games: They had a great selection of games set out across three different rooms, they had heavy games, progression games (see their progression board picture below) and light and recognisable games (monopoly etc.). Lovely selection with a bunch of new ones for us to try as well as ones we own. Only downside was that the games weren't set up for the number of plays they get, things like card sleeves, laminated score sheets and player aids and reinforced boxes. This led to some of the games looking a little warn even after such a short time of them being around. Next time I'm in I think I'll donate a few sleeves myself - these don't really damage our enjoyment, however I'm concerned that it will end up with some games becoming unplayable with the food and use in the cafe.
We played 7 wonders duel - average condition, 6 nimmt - average to good condition, memoir '44 - near perfect condition but barely played and roll for it - average to good condition
Price: It's around £4.50 per person just to sit and play for as long as you want, however we turned up before 4pm meaning we got in for free - whilst this was great for us, we would have more than happily paid for the entire day at around £5 each. I'm sure they've done their research here, but I do think they don't need to have this free period - perhaps replace it with a free hour or free night as one off events. Food and drinks were reasonably priced too and they had a great selection of teas which made me very happy!
Food: The food we had was lovely, however we only had chips as had to leave before being able to try a full meal. The menu looks great and suits all different types of diet like gluten free and vegetarian.
The main draw back was that food wasn't served until 5pm, whilst I understand the reason, with the chef only coming in at 5pm and the menu being very complex, I think they could offer some chips and simple sandwiches during the day, this would help to boost income as well as boosting new customers.
Staff: This was the highlight. Everyone was super friendly, it was like being around old friends, we had a tour from a lovely member of staff who was a game guru, then the manager came over and spoke to us and even gave us a quick game of 6 nimmt. Can't fault the service we got even though most of the staff appeared to be voluntary.
The only piece of feedback I would have is that it would be great for them to ask our level of experience or talk about what we have played before starting to show off parts of the place. We started near the 'heavy' area (some of which we own and love) and were kind of waived away from it towards the more common games, it wasn't till later that I mentioned that I had some of the heavier games that the conversation turned more towards the more complex games. Not a big deal but it's just about pitching at the right level
Pros: Great staff, great atmosphere and a lovely space to play games
Cons: Games lacked care to keep them pristine, lack of food was an annoyance and their website could do with some work
Overall - I wish I had one of these near where I live (Sheffield) It would be a great place that I would regularly come to with my family and even with friends - there is a larger selection than I can offer and home especially down the gateway end.
I certainly will be coming again and really want to see this place do really well as it's a great asset to the city as well as to the community with all the outreach work they've done!
L. H.
Every time I go into Board In the City the team are very welcoming and always do what they can to help. There is a constant hive of activity and people seem to be attracted from all ages and backgrounds. The food is great too and extremely well priced. I would recommend Board in the City to anyone looking for a place to unwind, chat with friends, have coffee and a bite to eat, oh and also to play on their huge library of board games :-)
N. A.
If you're out of ideas on what to do in Southampton, then give this place a look. It's a board game cafe by name and nature, though if you go at the right times there's also table top sales, craft sessions and quiz nights.
Im often quite surprised at how much merchandise for other activities like Magic, Pokemon, Warhammer etc. Are stocked and at competitive prices.
You do have to pay an entrance fee which works out £3 per person for the first three hours, then £1pp extra for every additional hour on top. In all honesty a casual session of three hours will give you plenty of time to try at least two of the hundreds of board games they have available. It's not unheard of for board game cafes to have these sorts of fees in place due to the sheer upkeep it involves, so no qualms there! Having GMs to hand most times I've been there also helps when I'm stuck with a game. For newcomers check out the blackboard for an idea of what to play or just ask someone :-)
I'd say what's stopping this from a full five stars are slight nuances such as consistency of food delivery and house rules, but to be honest these are not things you're going to experience if you're there solely for activities and a coffee. They have nachos which are generously priced and while simple, they're very satisfying to eat.
Location is also at a slight disadvantage as well as parking, so it's fortunate there's a couple of bus routes from town as well as parking by Aldi.
Definitely check this out if you've never been, and value that community element of Southampton over the generic retail and eatery epidemic. For tabletop gamers, goes without saying this is a must visit.
J. L.
Unlike other board game cafes it doesn't charge entry or game fees. You just turn up, have a really good coffee or one of many varieties of tea (~£1.30/cup!) and play a huge array of games. Great place
P. H.
Great place to pitch up for the day and unwind with some ges and friends. Good local crowd for Magic the Gathering and the foods good.
I. P. E.
Great place to play board games. Good selection of soft drinks.
T. W.
We visit Southampton when we can to see our cousins, one of them is Alex who is a regular there. He insisted that we take a look inside so we agreed. Throughout the weekend I had felt very ill and when we got to Board in the City it got to the point where I was crying. The staff were extremely kind about it and one of the women gave me a hug. Hopefully when we visit again I'll
Be better as I did envy my family for all of the eye catching games they seemed To be playing while my headache was raging! Thank you so much for your kindness!
S. M.
Great little board game Cafe, nothing fancy just games and a nice atmosphere. Prices reasonable, food is nice and a great selection of games, with something for everyone. Staff are friendly and helpful too.
S. P.
Amazing place. Staff soooo helpful and willing to teach you new games, suggest games you may like and even participate in quiter periods. Food is also brill, so yummy and filling. Would fully recommend attending to anyone!
J. R.
Hours of pleasurable fun with my six year old niece. She loved the my first stone age game and the chap who taught us how to play was friendly enough. Homemade snacks and drinks were lovely.
S. W.
We came for a Christmas party for something different. Boardinthecity couldn't have been more helpful in preparing us for the night and we were extremely well looked after on the day. Good selection of drinks and incredible selection of games! I'm sure I'll be back.
C. W.
very friendly knowledgable staff, excellent facilities including baby changing facilities.
Has large tables to play board games on and large selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks. Hot food also available which is very good all cooked fresh in the kitchen.
also has free WiFi!
B. S.
This place is special. The most friendly staff and customers. They make you feel incredibly welcome. Drop in and play a game or two. Trust me, you'll fall in love with the place.
R. G.
Good range of games but as a non profit organisation there are better ways to encourage people to come rather than providing a range of food that is not particularly suited to the people coming or just charging more and more for entrance. Parking near by is almost impossible and it's highly recommended to go with friends.
Y. a. H. K.
Very nice place with a vast collecting of boardgames from starting games to games for the seasoned player as well as your classics such as monopoly and cluedo. Always a warm welcome and a safe place to be able to be who you are.
E. H.
Lovely friendly place, great games, food and atmosphere :))
C. D.
BitC is always a fun place to relax. The staff is welcoming and there are hundreds of board games to play. Their food service some times has hiccups, but I'll still give them five stars.
Y. R. P.
Great place to play board games or eat and drink. They also have lots of activities on all the time, such as quizzes and tournaments. Would definitely recommend!
V. B.
Excellent. Family friendly. Staff very helpful and will teach you some of the games and advise about choice of games to play. A really enjoyable outing with our grandchildren.
T. B.
Excellent staff and drinks. The food is good but it's all about the games. Great selection and it's not for profit! Thoroughly recommend an after in this place!
J. S.
Great board game cafe with a good range of games and very helpful and friendly staff.
D. B.
Nice Boardgame Cafe offering a wide selection of games, events and good food. The staff are very helpful and friendly. 10/10!
S. B.
Lovely cafe with a great atmosphere and some fantastic events. Very friendly staff. And more board games than I even knew existed!
W. O.
From the cream cheese inside the asparagus fried to perfection with that tangy sauce. The fresh fried calamari with that creamy chipotle sauce. The poutine (which I find very disgusting but freaking LOVED here) which were steak fries topped with the perfect tasting gravy, cheese, and strips of steak. The fresh huge lobster sandwich cooked perfectly with the lightly toasted buns.
R. W.
Lovely place, with a really homely atmosphere, a great selection of games, and many helpful staff. Go visit - you won't be disappointed!
H. L. W.
Very friendly staff, it was our first time there, the manager took us for a tour, introduce a game for us and even sit down and explain the game rules to get us started.
Definitely will go back again.
J. T.
Amazing service by lovely people who were constantly making sure that we were happy with drinks and food and the support they gave us on star wars risk was fantastic explanation. Will definitely be going again soon.
D. G.
Really friendly staff team, and a great selection of games. We came here on my birthday and it was so fun!!
J. H.
