Reviews of Bison Coffee House
R. C.
This cafe serves lovely coffee, both regular and decaf, and also serves a number of chocolate brownies with different flavours. The staff also could not be more friendly and welcoming.
M. G.
Lovely little coffee shop. I got a cheese and tomato toastie and a vegan Oreo brownie and both were delicious and fairly priced. This place seems to be a good stop-off for cyclists and has outdoor seating which was ideal for a hot day like today. It is very convenient for a walk around the city walls which we did after visiting.
M. H.
Amazing, friendly and informative staff, fab coffee with great decor. Definitely recommend if you're on the outer edge of York!
A. M.
Great coffee place, for sure one of the best in York, a city with stiff competition! Almost goes without saying the coffee is excellent, food is very tasty and reasonably priced also. Finally, I’m really impressed by the playlist; I think I’m yet to hear a song I don’t love playing here!
K. B.
Not tried the food but can confidently say the coffee is some of the best in York.
Has a nice community feel which separates it from the more corporate atmospheres you find in city centre. No laptops is an understandable decision considering how small the building is, and how students such as myself typically take up space with very little spending. They’re also very dog-friendly from what I’ve read.
The house blend has a sweet, nutty tone that leaves you wanting more in the best way possible. Meanwhile, the balance and texture of the milk has been spot-on each time I've visited. On top of all that, the coffee is far more affordable than most places (£2.60 for a latte.. in this economy).

love the vegan chicken bagel❤️❤️❤️Next time gonna try their brownies. Cosy and peaceful environment. Best place to have a teatime after a tiring day! However, there are limited seats as this is a small coffee shop. Try to visit at non peak hours 😁

Friendly staff, fast service. Just a bit too milky. I like stronger taste coffee, dark baked beans.

This place is phenomenal. Don't let its size fool you.
This place is run by Joe and Hillary (Joe's wonderful mother). Neil is a third person who works there regularly, he is just as lovely and friendly to everyone too.
It is dog-friendly, so please bring them in - mainly because I would like to say hello.
Now for the important part... the coffee.
You never know what flavour of coffee to expect, but what you can expect is proper and great tasting coffee everytime - yes, you read that right DIFFERENT FLAVOURS. This is due to the large selection of coffee beans Bison like to use. This keeps the coffee interesting, taste buds happy and your caffeine fix right. What more could you ask for?
Wait... you're asking about food?
They have that covered too. From a selection of tasty bagels (for all types of diets veggie, vegan and meat options), toasties, vegan samosas, tea cakes, pork pie and a various selection of phenomenal brownies, which to change somewhat regularly (my personal favourite is white chocolate and raspberry, but there are so many to chose from you will find one you like for sure).
And to tie this all so nicely together, the staff (as mentioned) are so friendly and happy to chat. Love to see how you are doing and always make sure you have a great experience. Which is so well complemented by this cosy and warming environment.
Oh, did I mention the Nitro Coffee? These are cold brew coffees, perfect on a summers day and you want to have a cold one with the lads...minus the alcohol.
N. B.
Interesting coffee house , friendly staff, and dogs allowed inside
D.
If you like: rock, cozy but super cool places and an absolutely great coffee then boy, oh boy! You should definitely visit this place! :)
Only small minus? It's super super small, so if there's like 10 people inside..it would be quite crowded, but hey! Just give it a try
J. A.
Very small café, but one of the best you'll find in York. It's a favourite with university students and offers a wide variety of coffees and light bites. I have visited this coffee shop well over a dozen times and and will continue to frequent it. Highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area.
R. D.
Very quaint coffeeshop with lots of character. Cozy rooms in old house with lots of antiques. Cortado was on the weak side.
H. S.
Lovely local coffee shop, brought my puppy as they’re very dog friendly - they couldn’t be more accommodating (as she was very excitable) and they came to my table to take more order and let me pay etc. Delicious food, had a salmon bagel with VERY generous portion of salmon! All very reasonable prices too. Thanks very much to all at Bison!
I. B.
Charming atmosphere. Light blues and not many people (I visited on Wed at 1 pm) so you can enjoy calmness :) lovely stuff and quite nice coffee. I loved this place💜
s. b.
Always a great welcome at Bison Coffee House. The coffee is great and the hosts are very friendly and welcoming. Great selection of tempting chocolate brownies of different flavours. Samosas, toasties if you like something savoury. Highly recommended. Forget the multi nationals. Try this excellent independent. Highly recommended.
Z. S.
really delicious coffee and brownies! I got the Parma ham and brie toastie and it was super delicious! pretty good value for money and great service! Wish they had more vegetarian options as well as vegan though!
b. M.
Great service and nice coffee.
l. T.
A little gem of a coffee shop.. Such a relaxed and friendly vibe with great customer care. Delicious food and spot on coffee!
j.
Great vegan options, best oat milk mocha I’ve had in ages and staff were super friendly. Definitely recommend
R. M.
This is a really nice place! They have a good range of coffee and other drinks, bagels and cakes. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and it's a nice environment. When I visit it feels like I'm going to a friend's house for a coffee and sitting in their living room. Highly recommended as an enjoyable coffee experience!
J. H.
An absolute staple in the York coffee shop scene. The coffee changes regularly, with tasting notes always provided for each - a great way to experience new flavours you may not otherwise think about. The atmosphere is lovely, whether popping in for a drink (the hot chocolate is also excellent) or spending a few hours working, eating bagels and devouring delicious brownies!
A. N.
Best coffee that I've had in York until now! If you really want to support a small business or you just enjoy quality coffee, this is the place to try.
J. W.
It's such a lovely little coffee shop. I can't fault it in any way. Really lovely coffee, the food makes me melt. (I always have a slight crisis because I want to eat EVERYTHING) The brownies are a life-changing experience. It's really nice having somewhere to go that isn't in the city centre and you get a really personal experience.
S. S.
Great coffee, lovely people, good food
L. S.
Lovely little café just outside the city walls. Incredibly friendly staff and very good coffee.
D. H.
Absolutely fantastic little gem. Lovely staff and amazing coffee, definitely worth a visit if you are in the area as they are very reasonably priced but offer a lovely atmosphere to drink excellent coffee and sample some of their very tasty baked goods. They even do fresh pizza and meals but it can get quite busy so get their early. Great way to help the local community and snack
V. H.
I loved it because it was literally sitting in a terrace house's small dining room. Really friendly staff, great coffee, and they even kept my partner's son's forgotten purchase from Yorvik safe and sound until we can get back to pick it up. Lovely people. A real gem off the beaten path in York. Give it a try. The coustomers are an eclectic mix. Something different for a change, but be prepared to squeeze up and chat to someone new!
E. R.
I make the effort to go to Bison every time I'm in York. A small but cosy coffee shop - love the quirky vintage design, and the fact that you can purchase mugs, cups and teapots at cheap prices. The coffee is excellent, and the brownies are to die for. Budget-friendly without compromising on quality. The staff are also very friendly.
C. B.
The owner is extremely nice. The coffee is always delicious and the brownies are to die for so are the bagels and cheese scones. Basically a great place to chill, small cosy and cute.
M. J.
I couldn't love this place more. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the walls are covered with pure character, and the coffee is out of this world. Whether you're looking for a break from the outside world to read a book or a coffee and a bagel on your way to uni, Bison has you covered.
C. W.
Coffee - whilst not too hot, and not bitter, I couldn’t really taste the espresso shot in the cortado over the milk. Brownies however were amazing
Y. C.
Great Place for a cup of coffee and tea! though bit cold outside in spring time.
S. C.
Really love it here ,great atmosphere, the coffee and cakes are are perfect. A little hideaway for half an hour, sometimes you need it in York.
And the lady who works there makes it.
S. J.
A lovely place!! Delicious bagels and coffee and best brownies!!! Nice relaxed friendly atmosphere highly recommend!!!
K. A.
Quirky, great coffee and cake, friendly staff, will visit again
A. M.
Best coffee I've had in York at a very reasonable price. Very Vegan friendly. Awesome staff and good atmosphere
H. M.
Lovely coffee house just round the corner from the student house my daughters in. Ideal to pop in. They offer dairy free and vegan options.☺. Friendly staff. Husband loves the background music.
C. H.
Excellent proper coffee and amazing vegan brownies. Ask for double shot if you want a strong one.
L. B.
This is a small and cosy coffee shop with interesting decor. There is a wide range of hot and cold drinks and some food offered too. The hotel chocolate was very tasty and they kindly allowed my niece to bring an ice lolly in as she was desperate for an ice cream which they don't sell. It was a shame that they were shutting quite early that day so we could only have one drink
K. R.
The brownies and coffee here are great, often go here for lunch. My favourite is the brie, avocado and rocket bagel. Very relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff - would recommend.
G. S.
Very cosy and comfortable. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The food and drink is exceptional. I highly recommend going there, you will instantly feel at home.
J. R.
Hands down the best coffee shop in the area with excellent food, in + outdoor seating, parking + friendly staff.
The Bagels + deserts are 5 stars alone.
M. W.
We had very tasty bagels- one with falafel and hummous and rocket and one with cream cheese and salmon. The coffee is very good using Hasbean coffee. We had flat white and latte. The brownies are lush especially the peanut butter one! The pricing is inexpensive £3:80 for the bagels!!! Definitely recommend a visit. The ship itself is querky and quaint but small.
O. W.
Always very friendly staff. A charming venue, though not very many seats. You HAVE to try the brownies (quite rich though so might be best to share). 100% recommend!
R. M.
Excellent place to chill after lectures or grab a coffee and brownie. The staff are friendly and the brownies are heavenly. There's little reason not to try Bison Coffee.
J. F.
Good coffee and a cool place to be while you drink it.
A little on the small side but there is some outside seating for when the weather is good.
Damn good brownies too!
J. C. (.
Great little coffee shop. Always feel welcome and some nice coffee and cakes. Love the decor. It's also better value then most.

A really nice quirky little coffee house with good coffee, and a nice range of fillers. Recommended. For those tired student legs that have walked from town.
M. B.
Good bagels. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Prices on the lower side. Not good quantities for a meal, but alright for tea and snacks.
M. S. T.
The owner was super friendly and nice, the coffee shop is small but nice and cozy! The coffee was OK - not the best but certainly not bad either!
B. G.
I had one of the tastiest coffees I’ve ever had here, it’s certainly worth the small walk from the centre. The brownies are to die for!
