Reviews of Gatehouse Coffee
K. B.
Wonderful place to tuck in and study for classes. Wonderful Biscoff Brownie and warming coffee and teas in a cozy, historic setting. Over the course of 3-4 hours, had the vanilla latte, the London Fog, and the apple mint tea. Options to eat outside on the roof.
C. R.
Great little gem tucked away in the city walls! If it’s not too hot outside you can enjoy their 2 terraces, otherwise their 2 indoor seating areas which are absolutely lovely. Medieval ambiance + amazing coffee! Their affogato is really nice as well!
E. G.
Gorgeous literal place situated across several floors. The views aren't amazing, but on a summer's day it's a delight and the coffee is grand. The best bit is it's actually a volunteer run (which is why it can be closed unexpectedly) cafe and is connected to one of the local churches. Definitely worth a visit and I personally love to work there as it has spaces suitable for lone visits as well as more active socialising.
m.
One of the best independent coffee shops in York . The middle and roof top coffee areas made the experience worthy of five stars
M. P.
My absolute favourite coffee place in york. Super friendly staff who are happy to have a conversation if they’re not busy, and they make a delicious and perfectly well balanced flat white: rich and full-bodied, but not too bitter or too acidic. Plus, their cozy atmosphere is perfect for sitting down with a good book and a good coffee.
A. H.
Nice stop on the walk around the walls. Good coffee and tea, and the cinnamon rolls went down very well with my daughter. Would definitely recommend a stop here... Just watch your head!
E.
My family and I just happened to find this coffee house while we were walking around the wall in York. Absolutely worth a stop in!
T. M.
The perfect little stop off while you're making your way around the York walls. A well deserved cup of tea or something stronger can be found here with a cozy friendly atmosphere.
H. R.
Stopped for refreshments whilst walking the walls. Good cuppa and a top notch cinnamon bun. Interesting building too, nice to see historic building being used
N. S.
What a super cool spot to come in for a morning tea and breakfast.
Saw this place while walking around the city walls and decided to come back the next morning.
Social distancing rules are taken very seriously yet nothing seems out of place.
The staff was helpful in coming up with a veggie concoction that consisted of a croissant, cheese, veggies, and pesto sauce for me that tasted as poultry divine.
Up the stairs from ordering is a seating area that has ample space to relax and work from. The wifi was strong. Up above, I believe there is a rooftop as well.
M. R.
What an absolute find. Coffee shops don't often come more steeped in history than this. Loved the fact that on a nice day you could sit on what could be described as a roof terrace.
Only down side is it is not really suitable for anyone with mobility probelms.
A. F.
Hands down my favorite coffee shop in York...a must visit. Friendly owner and staff, excellent coffee...AND it's in an old gate house...part of the actual city walls of York. The atmosphere and unique setting can't be beat. You'll actually go right by here if you're walking the city walls, so it's a convenient stop.
m. p.
Cooky little coffee shop, staff are welcoming and the place is really very cool. Outside seating on the roof or over the bridge.
G. M.
Beautiful coffee shop in one of the gathouses in York city walls. Friendly staff brought us lunch up on the roof terrace on a warm, autumnal day.
We had delicious chicken & pesto and goat's panninis with some cool soft drinks. Wonderful place with a great atmosphere and comfy leather sofas on the first floor. Will definitely visit again soon.
T. K.
Quite the place to have an excellent coffee along with great cakes, etc on top of the most Otho al gate on the wall of York, set in an Elizabethan Guard House. What a find!
J.
Great coffee and cosy atmosphere. The roof terrace is perfect on a sunny day, with views of the walls and the city.
Π. Π.
Beautiful place and great coffee and snacks there!! Very interesting cafeteria. Very normal prices. Its on the road but quote enough. There are and inside tables too.
K. R.
Unique coffee shop built within and on top of the old gateway. Very good coffee!
M. A.
Lovely coffee and the biscoff brownie is very tasty. The staff are very friendly and easy to talk to.
N. E.
Really nice to have coffee in the historic wall of York. I wish they had a wider selection of snacks though.
A. W.
What a dream place! We went up to the roof terrace and it was just breath taking. Stunning cafe and the staff was super nice, especially to the kids ♥️
C. A.
Have lived in York for 2 years and have just discovered this gem. Amazing location and views. It is the most quaint cafe that I have seen in York and it is really affordable. You can even eat on the top of the gate and look out into York. Worth it 100%
D. “. D. D.
What a little gem. I stumbled across this on a walled walk. Sat on top of the Barbican and had a lemonade. Perfectly cosy and friendly staff. Thank you
J. G.
This is one of the most unique and inspiring coffee shops in England. An absolute must stop, see and drink coffee or have some delicious food!
S. L.
Great coffee and cake. Nice to sit out on the wall and watch the world go by
D. N.
Great place great customer service lovely seating areas inside on the roof and even round the uks last intact barbican.
D. D.
Probably the best coffee shop I have been to.
I would highly recommend that anyone in York during autumn wraps up warm and enjoys a coffee on the walls here. It is absolutely beautiful to sit and look at the autumnal colours while enjoying a good coffee
J. H.
Great coffee (even the decaff!) - and super-interesting range of seating options - including a windy rooftop terrace. Worth the climb for the skyline views..
b.
The brownies and coffee are both super tasty and they have takeaway service during the lockdown period. The best choice to support local business.
R. B.
Nice little coffee house in a fantastic setting in Walmgate Bar. Amazing views over York from the roof.
Really good coffee, lovely cakes and tasty paninis, all at a very good price.
E. B.
This coffee ☕ is the best!!!! As if the coffee wasn't awesome in itself, the service and smile by the staff is just so uplifting. Perfect to pop in and grab whilst your wandering round the city or they do have some seating inside to have a restful cuppa. Highly recommended 👌
C. M.
Really quirky café with excellent coffee and a friendly atmosphere. The location within the walls is just amazing and feels like a well kept secret; the sit-down areas are on the outside of the walls. Excellent business, highly recommended - I always pop here for a coffee when I'm passing.
P. R.
Really nice coffee and cake. Slight issue that flapjack was served on a paper napkin that it stuck to and meant you had to eat paper. Shame, as its these little issues that stop us going back and recommending.
Otherwise the coffee is excellent.
M. F.
Great coffee. Outside needs better furniture
A. M.
Loved it so much I went twice. Great atmosphere, the city walls have been re-purposed into a cafe. I highly recommend it!
V. G. -. f. t. A. C.
Great little atmospheric coffee shop in Walmgate Bar at the East of the city. Good service.
J. F.
Probably my favorite coffee shop in the WORLD. Not only is it a coffee shop within an historic city wall, the coffee and food are perfect. But most importantly, the owner is filled with love and compassion for others. You can feel the spirit and positive energy flowing through the place. I'm so happy that the Lord is using this coffee shop to reach and love other people.
P. K.
Coffee shop actually in one of the gates in York's ancient walls. Made good use of the space and had lots of tables on top of the tower. Coffee and cake were good too.
C. j. B.
Good coffee, amazing medevil building. A must see
J. K.
Such a lovely little coffee shop in a great location! The baristas know their stuff! If you’re there make sure you try one of the millionaire shortbreads and say hey to ‘Levi’, he’s the best.
N. P.
The lovely manager always greets you warmly, along with the other staff. Very friendly and welcoming service. Perfect for a catch up with friends or quick bite to eat. Very reasonably priced, and make sure to get a loyalty card as you'll definitely want to go back again!
A. W.
Lovely Blessed Quirky cafe, ideal for history buffs and cofeecionados alike
E.
What a lovely place to have a coffee and some cake. The cafe itself is absolutely gorgeous, with lovely medieval/vintage décor and this wonderful coffee smell all around you. The staff were nice and accommodating. You can also sit outside on the gate on a sunny day, which means I'm certainly coming back here!
P. O.
Absolutely dreamlike venue, we easily whiled away hours there over delicious coffees and hot chocolates. The centuries-old building is beautifully decorated and there’s even a balcony on the roof where you can look over the city. Warm and friendly staff too.
L. G.
Absolutely beautiful place! Great coffee and amazing location
T. W.
Excellent coffee and tea drink in a quirky old gatehouse - wonderful! Prices good compared to other places in York, find a table first in cold weather. Outside seating looks enticing for when it's warmer.
R. A.
Nice quiet cosy little place on the walls of York ,lovely flat white and combination of modern and old styling.
J. S.
One of the best coffee shops in York.
Brilliant location, set in one of the towers that make up the Bar Walls.
The staff are always friendly, and I've never seen it empty yet.
There's a couple of roof terraces that are accessed via a spiral staircase.
Well worth a visit.
J. N.
Lovely cafe inside Walmgate bar, a historical gate defence of the city. They open the roof top seating area when the weather is good which gives you amazing views of the streets below. Very narrow and steep steps inside.
p. a.
A great place for a quiet coffee & views of the walls & turrets.Popular with students looking for a quiet place to study.
J. M.
We didn't stop for any refreshments, the staff allowed us to go out on the barbakan and onto the rooftop to see the view. They were very kind and welcoming, thank you! The food and drinks looked great, and we loved the decor and atmosphere. I will be dropping in again soon, but next time to try the wares- can't wait!
S.
A hidden gem of a coffee & cake shop literally in the York Wall. It is staffed by the guys & gals from Calvary Chapel Bible school, so it's nice to hear their stories and background - you should ask them to share!
Tip - if the weather permits, head on up to the tables outside on the open air roof terrace.
G. B.
Lovely place for a great coffee within a bit of York history. Cake portions are amazing!
R. M.
A lovely place to have a drink and relax. They have a good selection of hot and cold drinks and cakes too. The prices are very reasonable. The café is in an old gatehouse on the city walls and it's a really unique and interesting place. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
W. D. (. A. S.
Literally the best cafe I've ever been to - and keep going to. Self-declared coffee addict who has a map of available cafés before I even arrive at a location for a new adventure. Good coffee I'm usually happy, but exceptional coffee, impeccable service and probably THE cosiest setting imaginable makes this hands down my favourite place. Every single member of staff brightens my day with their service and positive attitude, every single time I go - an absolute credit to the service industry. If this place ever closed, I'd probably have to take the week off work. Thanks guys.
N. L. M.
Lovely old cafe on multi levels in a turret of the old walls of York, with an open air section on the roof. Good place to sit, have a drink and something to eat, or be part of the internet cafe. A no go for anyone with mobility issues as there are two flights of narrow stairs!
E. R.
I've seen this place a number of times and never been in. Now living around the corner, I thought I'd pop in. Nice coffee in a fantastic building and good price. The staff are friendly and welcoming. There is building work being carried out the moment but that doesn't detract from the place. It's seems like a student hangout and is obviously running with a slight Christian vibe, with a quote from the good book on the back of the loyalty card. They aren't shoving in your face, so who cares, it's not Costa.
D. S.
Beautiful location, very good coffee, great baristas/staff
A. W.
A gorgeous hidden gem! Coffee was delicious, staff friendly, atmosphere unique & cosy. As it's just around the corner from our daughters new house, we'll definitely be back!
M. N.
I love this place. Scenic views of York if you sit outside, great atmosphere inside and a good place to get some work done, with power outlets and WiFi. Can get quite busy at times. Coffee is good and I love the macaroon and the cinnamon roll bites.
N. B.
Great coffee and cakes. Upstairs has settees and comfy chairs plus there is a roof terrace above with views over the city.
This coffee shop is located within a gatehouse in the old city walls and is accessed by steep stone steps. There is no disabled access as it is situated in a medieval gatehouse tower.
M. T. N.
First off: atmosphere. It's not often that you can get coffee or tea in a medieval gatehouse perched atop the most intact city wall in England. The staff are incredibly friendly, and the prices are good. All around it's a nice and unique place to get caffeinated.
M. M.
Quirky tea room in a fortress gatehouse. Over three floors the top one being the roof. Tight steep stairs with restricted headroom. Good staff service. Good range of cakes and drinks. Well worth a stop off enroute around the walls.
J. F.
I love this cafe.
It is situated within the City Bar Walls and has kept all the original features.
It is small and cosy inside but has outside seating available in the dryer weather on the top of Walmgate Bar itself. This offers fantastic views of the city but is difficult to access for the less able.
The food is reasonably priced and good quality. Unfortunately the only access is up two flights of uneven steps so is not suitable for wheelchair users.
M. R.
A great coffee house, loved our stop there in our walk around the walls, if only we’d found it earlier in our holiday I would have been a regular visitor!
Outstanding outdoor seating areas, I can’t wait till my next visit.
D. B.
Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Waiting for them to start doing those great sandwiches again
A. S.
I do go here several times a week. They have great cakes and friendly service. It's such a cosy atmosphere. Today I tried their Nitro cold brew coffee on tap and I was not disappointed. Never had cold brew before but this was lovely!
D. E.
Really like the ambience here. Very popular among tourists and students. My favourite order is the London Fog! I also like their mini nibbles allowing you to eat more than one type of cake!
J. L.
Doesn't look much when you approach, but this is an excellent coffee stop when walking the walls. You're able to sit on the top of the turret weather permitting. Cody and friendly, serves excellent cakes and drinks with helpful staff.
A. B.
Got a chai latte and sat curled up in the window seat reading. Gorgeous well looked after space and tasty drink at a reasonable price
H. C.
Gorgeous, unique spot. Super staff. Lovely quality food & drink. Reasonably priced for local population, inc. students. Not sure how accessible for people with additional mobility needs, may need to check in advance of arrival.
E. L.
Having a coffee inside a mediaeval city wall is an experience everyone should have! Seating inside and outside. Tight but they make good use of the space available. Recommended.
J. E.
Quick friendly service. Great place to do course readings. Wasn't at all busy in the morning. Lovely view from the roof. Coffee is reasonably priced but not the best I've ever had.
B. W.
The setting, the building, it's remarkable. The coffee and tea was better.
M. S.
Everybody there was friendly and out going but not too much. The art on the walls is great! The service was good, coffee good, pasties good. The ancient "vib" was definitely there. A great atmosphere. Great views. If you want a fast drive-thru, go someplace else, try McDonald's! :)
A.
Lovely hidden small coffeeshop! The atmosphere and scenery from the inside contrasts its medieval history well with the feel of a modern independent coffeeshop. They have good nitro cold brew on tap!
L. O.
Charming little cafe in one of the towers on the city wall. Good value for money considering the location. Good selection of boardgames. Visited by lots of students due to proximity to uni.
L. K.
Lovely little hidden gem that you must pop into when walking around the walls. Plenty of options and lovely seating area upstairs. Felt very Covid safe
M. W.
Fantastic place to stop for a very reasonably priced coffee and cake along York walls. Staff were brilliant and friendly and the setting and atmosphere are just perfect! Cannot fault it!
S. B.
Very reasonably priced and a great pit stop for walking the city walls. There are plenty of seating opportunities inside and out which will give you a unique view of the city. Very good vegan options - even having vegan cheese on their paninis! They only have paninis as food options and a few cakes, so not a big selection but perfect for a short stop to rest your legs and enjoy a coffee.
S. A.
Chill place to work for a few hours. Lots of choice for tea and coffee. So many good cakes (and mini cakes if you don't feel like going overboard). They do panini's over lunch time which are a little expensive but very filling. Lots of comfy arm chairs and desk place depending on what you fancy. Can also go on the roof to get a fab view of York.
K. W.
Delightful coffee shop in an old gate tower. Coffee very good quality and reasonably priced
The decor and seating is great, old sofas mixed with dining tables and chairs giving the ideal mix
Didn't eat there but what we saw and smelt was very tempting
Will certainly visit again when I next visit this delightful city
L. Y.
Teas are cheapest in York. Coffees are a good standard. The paninis are INCREDIBLE... seriously. Generous on the cheese and other fillings, perfectly crispy without being burnt, great flavours. I'd say really good value lunch given the standard and what you can pay for run of the mill stuff elsewhere! All handmade!
C. B.
So beautiful - and wonderful cakes!
M. W.
Excellent coffee in fab place...within the ancient walls of York.
M. B.
One of those "only in York" experiences. Good coffee. Picturesque view from seating up on the city walls at Walmgate portion. Christmas lighting on the walls at this time of the year simply adds to the beauty of the place.
s. r.
Very nice, polite and helpfull staff. Great coffee and the building is a beautiful exsample of architecture, would suggest if you love coffee but 4 stars because i havent tested there food.
J. P.
Very pleasant staff, excellent service. Good arrangements for COVID-19, lots of distance but still very comfortable. Recommended for aetheists.
K. C.
According to TripAdvisor this coffee shop did afternoon tea. it was quite a walk from the city centre but we eventually made it. They don't do afternoon tea, but you could pick the elements from the menu to make up your own afternoon tea.
We like chocolate cakes and chocolate tray bakes. And they didn't have any of those, so we didn't stay and have anything because we wanted an afternoon tea. We were disappointed that TripAdvisor was misleading.
That said, it looked like a really nice quaint coffee shop in an unusual location.
S. H.
A unique little cafe with an outdoor seating area you can’t miss
餅.
Comfortable with plug in and great coffee!!!
R. J.
The staff are welcoming and very friendly. They serve some amazing coffees and other hot drinks. A favourite of mine is the African Sunrise, it actually looks like a sunrise in the cup. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and informal. The café itself is within the 16th century gatehouse as part of the wall that surrounds York. It boasts one of the few remaining barbicans in the UK, rooftop access and its original portcullis. It has some great cakes and paninis too.
M. A.
Very quaint cafe, you need to duck to get through the door and breath in if wanting to sit outside on the wall dining area. It all adds the experience though so well worth a visit..... Oh and the desserts are spot on as well 😃
D. V.
Amazing location. Good service. The ambience is lovely and the server is polite, friendly and cheerful. He is a good photographer too.
C. O.
Good coffee (Union roast), homemade cakes, beautiful historic building, comfortable armchairs.
Run by Calvary Chapel and staffed by their American exchange students. The Christian background music can get annoying.
D. d. K.
Loved the location. The coffee was very good and the service was fast and friendly. Makes a great change from all the generic coffee chains.
D. C.
Lovely walk around york wall. This place is a great stop off for refreshments. If you have the weather I recommend having a drink outside on the outer perimeter looking back at york wall.
B. P.
A welcome rest walking York's walls.
Really good coffee, nice cake, lovely outdoor seating for a nice day. Try the rooftop patio. I look forward to my next visit.
C.

M. S.
Lovely place in a very suggestive spot! The staff is very nice and the tea and cake were absolutely gorgeous! It is not cheap but it still worth it

J. Y.
Really friendly staff, great panini's! Tea is great value, the building is historic. All round brilliant cafe.
B. F.
Absolutely wonderful food and drink and the ability to go up to the roof of the gatehouse and see amazing views of the city, well worth a visit especially when it's sunny!
G. W. (.
Great place to stop for refreshments if you're walking the wall. Built into the wall itself, it has 3 floors of seating and for those wanting al fresco....
D. L.
Amazing cafe! The roof top terrace has great views of the city and the staff were really helpful and friendly.
6.
Great coffee and omg panini. So good.
D. W.
All true - friendly staff, nice and interesting cakes (including vegan), great building and reasonable too. Some students look like they live there.
P. J.
Completely unique setting, great coffee and nice staff. The terraces on the roof and along the barbican are really cool.
A. M.
Calm And relaxed atmosphere in unique tower, which is part of The Barbican gate. Great AllPress coffee and good cakes are served.
K. C.
Why would you not get amazing hand poured coffee on England's only surviving barbican? An ideal spot to take a break while on the south leg of the city wall walk.
D. G.
Fantastic coffee and really good, proper panini. Don't make the mistake of walking straight past this place - as I've done for years.
D. R. D.

J. D.
Great coffee, wonderful qwirky location & interior and good (if expensive) paninis.

A nice break for the wall walk with excellent service and free wifi. Beware those taller than five foot though as doors and steps are low

(Translated) Absolutely perfect little bar! Warm and familiar environment, not very large, but with a terrace that can be used in good weather. It is located in one of the towers of York's ancient city wall, which adds another peculiarity. Meeting place for students, it is not unusual to find someone studying, with a good tea to warm up. Excellent desserts and cafeteria, friendly and courteous service. Among other things, the triple chocolate cake and the cinnamon bun are recommended.

Piccolo bar assolutamente perfetto!
