Visited family up in York, and had heard good things about this store so I decided to go and check it out. They have a decent selection of games, all priced fairly reasonably. If you’re into Japanese imports you will have a field day here. The only downside I thought it was a bit dark inside the store, but otherwise brilliant. Definitely worth popping in if you like retro.

Came across this shop by chance when visiting York. Really pleased I did. This is easily the best retro video game store I've visited and quite possibly the best selection of PS1 games I've ever seen. Everything is decently organised, with games carefully sealed. Discovered this gem of a shop on our last day of visiting York. Jam packed with every console plus games. Brilliant range of plushes, figures and collectibles for gamers and manga/anime lovers. Staff was super friendly and down to earth.

I have been to many retro games shops all over the UK and so far this is my favourite. It has a large supply of boxed and unboxed games for most of the old consoles and even some micro computer games. All hardware seems to be available boxed and unboxed with many contollers and light guns 🔫 for cheaps. I might have to move eto york.

We visit York from Newcastle once or twice a year and my wife now accepts that I need an hour or two every visit to have a good mooch around this treasure trove of retro gaming gold. My two young sons love it also as they have plenty Pokémon and Nintendo. Plenty of Sega Saturn games including an extensive amount of Japanese imported games. Came across Sore Thumb whilst looking for a new place to get my retro games as my previous go-to place had started getting a lot of reproduction games. The guys at Sore Thumb know their stuff and in the half dozen times I've been to the store have always had a huge amount of stock and i've been able to find what I want. Can not recommend highly enough and I now travel all the way to York from Leeds just to go here!

It is so difficult to find reasonable retro games outlets these days, and I came across Sore Thumb completely by chance! Being down in London however meant visiting in person difficult. I contacted them by Facebook and the Store Manager went above and beyond to help me place an order. He was patient with me over the course of several weeks while we exchanged messages before I finally settled on my order of a number of PSOne games. When my order finally arrived I couldn't help but grin at the care they had gone to to wrap up each individual game to ensure they were protected in transit! The whole experience was just nice and easy, and they are absolute professionals and gents! I'm now trying to convince my fiancee to go on a weekend gettaway to York with the ulterior motive of being able to visit in person. Great store, great guys, would highly recommend!

One of the most impressive collections of games for every system you can think of. They have a particularly impressive gamecube ps1 and ps2 collection. They also buy your games too for a great price. The guys have a really impressive collection here it’s worth just going to look at it all. The staff are great too!

What a treasure trove, wether you are looking for a particular item or just wanting to take a trip down memory lane, there is something for everyone.. I have collected games for a number of years, visiting various game shops but nothing locally compares to sore thumb for variety. Prices are reasonable and follow the market, the shop is easy to find, you can’t miss it.. easy reach of the city center and parking behind in Bootham Row.

They also have a good selection of gaming figurines, & few more recent consoles & games (Wii & Xbox one). Sadly the shop itself is a bit small, & there is no parking nearby, but it is def worth visiting

This is a very late review. I visited the shop before lockdown. The shop is AMAZING. There is so much stuff packed into the store and there is lot of unusual and rare items. I bought 12 PS2 games at £2 to £5 which were CEX prices or higher. When I got home my PS2's drive would not spin anymore. So I never got to play the games. I just decided to sell the games I bought from Sore Thumbs and when I checked the disks 3 of them are really badly scratched. And 2 are pretty scratched. I was stupid not to check the disks in the shop but I would NOT have bought 5 out of the 12 games. So this is great shop BUT CHECK THE DISKS !

I ordered a game remotely via their Facebook page (by messaging them) after seeing them post a picture of it on Facebook. Ordering was quick and easy, and they posted the next working day. The game came a day after that and was in excellent condition. They packaged the game up well to protect it during transit. Very happy and will definitely order from them again, hopefully I'll get around to going to their shop soon too!

Absolutely love this place. Staff are awesome, games selection is mind blowing and I can’t find enough time or money for this place. I’m thankful they only stock retro games, saves having to skoot around the young ones. Just fellow compadres interested in the jucyness of retro collecting. My only 3 niggles are: Buy the shop next door and expand :D I can’t reach the top shelf stuff (I’m a short ass) Upgrade your till system (it pains me to see you having to slowly enter games onto two tills. Plus my receipts don’t show what game cost what) Still one of the best retro game shops that scratches all your itches.

[Edit: Was meant for 4 Stars and clarification] SoreThumbs Gaming is a great place to look for some classic games and consoles and even different kinds of things like magazines, toys and collectables. However what can let this place down sometimes is the staff generally aren't that friendly. When I asked a question about PSP games, the person was very blunt that they rarely get anyway and didn't seem to care much. Which is all fair and understanding. And didn't seem the type to have a chat with. With the response I received, that is true. Thought I would point that out. If you're looking to buy cartridge games like GBA games can be tricky. While I can't prove they sell Chinese knockoff games, they may have some which is up to you to figure out and ask the staff if you're unsure. And when they were in the Shambles Market years ago, I foolishly didn't notice the game was a knockoff, which was my fault and not of the staff. If you're going in buying cartridge games, please ensure you have knowledge of what is genuine and fake. Even with what I said and to the owner, I am always forever grateful to the people making this store happen in York. To appreciate the past and love for video games and inspire a new generation that doesn't know our days. And to see this store do it's best.

Good selection of retro memorabilia, consoles, action figures etc. It is a little pricey for certain things that you might pick up on Gumtree or eBay for example but in the store at least you can see the items in person before you buy anything. Still, it's worth a visit if your in the area.

Lots of harder to find games and decently priced especially for the more common items. Also sells pirated homebrew games, though. Edit: You sell dreamcast ports of Mario and Pokemon. Porting them to a new system doesn't negate the fact that they're pirate copies of the games.

today i traded a game and i got £4 POUNDS. it was amazing. don't expect 50p. the consoles are amazing condition and have a box. they have pokemon toys from japan and even have limeted edition stuff. i would reccomend this shop. I would think its the best shop in york

Such a wonderful find, unfortunately it's the type of place I'd spend too much money if left unattended. Relics of my childhood are littered throughout the store, even as far back as my fathers childhood. Will beat CEX hands down on price everytime and the products work!!! Lost count how many old products I've bought at cex that didn't work! So if you're reading this, take note... Choose sore thumb over CEX, I implore you!!
