We have just installed Brimstone poplar cladding on our new extension and are absolutely delighted with it. It's a beautiful finish, full of character and interest. We're already enjoying watching it change gradually as it seasons. We are so pleased we chose Vastern - a local, independent supplier with a strong emphasis on sustainability and locally grown timber and responsibly managed woodland. Right from our first visit, and the brilliant display boards in the car park showing cladding as it matures in all different aspects (ie North facing, South facing etc) and the beautiful showroom, we knew we had found something special. The team have been hugely helpful in outlining options, explaining technical aspects and advising on choices and the customer service has been excellent.

Had a really lovey experience up at Vastern a few months back. I’ve been a cabinet maker for 15 years based in Chichester, have almost always just sourced timber very locally, unfortunately one of the main sawmills locally to me is no longer really taking the time to support smaller businesses. As a maker is imperative to at I get to hand select boards to find the best timber for my clients. I drove about 2 hours to get up to Vastern and was not disappointed. Wolf who is in charge of the yard and showing customers around was brilliant, very patient with a rather picky customer :) picked through plenty of boards to find just the right ones, thanks again wolf. I will 100% be using them again soon for more projects. I also have never been to such an honest wood yard, there was a small miscalculation on the bill, I had no idea as was very happy with the end price compared with south coast prices, Wolf literally came running out to inform me and sort out the refund. Absolutely brilliant service, advice and products. These guys were fantastic. They are based 200 miles away from where I live and all communicating from start to finish was excellent. From sending out samples to assisting my delivery driver with loading his van. I ordered the 65mm factory grade t&g oak flooring. This was for a room that I have knocked through that had an existing floor that had been down 20years. I had been advised at other places that I would not get anything to match. But with the help of the guys at Vastern and the guy who fitted my floor originally everything went perfect. In these times of not being able to drive around and visit showrooms to view an item. I had been meaning to visit Vastern's for years and the opportunity came up with a commission for which I wanted to use some first quality home grown oak and some ash. First impressions were good with a lovely tidy yard and plenty of beautifully stacked timber air-drying. Selecting out the oak, Wolf couldn't have been more helpful, responding to my requests to search for particular grain. Nothing was too much trouble for him, even when I spotted a promising board at the bottom of a pack of GIB ash, and he even put some air in my tyres for the journey back to Cornwall! Going into Vastern to buy my wood supplies was less of a 'quick I need' thing, but turned into a full joyful experience. I've been a customer of Vastern timber for years but a few days ago I had a "needle in a haystack" situation , having to finding a slab of waney edge timber with burr for a worktop that would fit the criteria for this project . What an incredible place. Literally so much beautiful wood to choose from it made our brains hurt a little. Huge operation with just about everything you could ever ask for. The amazing thing was though how well we were treated. Just two young carpenters with not a huge budget and we’re given a really incredible amount of time and walk around most of the facilities. I requested quotes from a few suppliers for green oak boards and Vastern were the only ones to respond with anything that made sense and at a good price. Robin calculated the quantities perfectly for the cladding and the order arrived as arranged. The quality was brilliant, virtually no waste, all straight and flat. I hunted everywhere for some specific timber, of particular sizes, that were in stock, in the quantities I needed and of the best quality. Wolf at Vastern Timber went out of his way to find me exactly what I wanted. I would like to express how impressed i was with my visit to vastern timber today. I was unable to find a suitable oak window sill in the showroom. I was then served by Wolf who showed me the full available stock. This enabled me to find 2 pieces of thick oak with a waney edge. I contacted Vasterns for a large Oak slab for a table commission i had been struggling with. All the other local Timber yards had either been too expensive or not got back to me when i was trying to buy something. I spoke to Wolf over the phone and was impressed with his speed of sending me photos, measurements and prices. I drove up and picked out some other timber the next day, and bought 2 huge slabs of Oak, they also stock Osmo oils which was convenient. Wolf was refreshing to deal with and very friendly, nothing was too much for him. Vastons is a huge place which only uses British Timbers. After wasting so much time waiting for other Timber yards to call me back (which they never did after numerous requests) I will definitely be returning here again, the service is super fast and efficient, and they have what they say they have. Vasterns is the best Timber yard around, after having nothing but trouble with English Woodlands timber and their lack of communication, we contacted Vasterns and spoke with Wolf. He was so helpful and friendly, the knowledge he has over all aspects of the Timber yard is incredible, we needed a large slab of Kiln dried Oak for a table top amongst other stuff. The price was hugely cheaper than the other yards and to be able to get someone to get back to us asap and not direct us to a confusing website where everything seems to be on hold, was refreshing. I’m building a shed from scratch with minimal DIY experience and cladding it with Larch waney edge shiplap. They’ve helped me through every stage and nothing was to much bother for them. All the staff are a credit to the business but I have to say that Stefan was exceptional with his customer care throughout the purchasing. I collected my order and of arrival I was greeted by Andy aka Wolf. What a guy, great customer care, incredible with his forklift skills and a very professional well mannered and a fun character. As I needed to adjust my payment, I went in to the office, fully masked up of course. There I spoke to Dee who kindly refunded me the difference. Again her and her colleague were very polite and professional but with great personality. Although Vastern Timber is a 2 hour drive for me, the level of service, the quality of the product, the knowledge provided and the very reasonable pricing all make it very worth it...and there’s also the bonus of dealing with an amazing team whilst you’re there. Top job Vastern, it was an absolute pleasure!!!

Ordered and fitted some lovely Elm floorboards supplied by Vastern about 14 years ago at the recommendation of Simon Lunt of Boniti. Recently we had a flood that ruined a handful of these. Replacing them could have been a pain, as usually these are only supplied in large lots - as per my original purchase. Wolf from Vastern said he would look to see if there were any unprepared boards in the yard that I could buy and then cut and adjust the thickness for myself, which he did and found there were. So I was already delighted. And then, having researched hiring a thickener to take the boards from 28mm down to 20mm myself Wolf kindly offered to cut and reduce the thickness of the boards specially for me. Not only did this save me a lot of hassle, Wolf sorted all this out for me at a pro rata price roughly equivalent to that available to those buying £1,500 plus orders. For which I am hugely grateful. Beautiful timber, beautiful people!

Just got some Siberian Larch Grade A and B delivered today in 140mm and 95mm for decking and wall cladding. Andy was extremely helpful with the delivery and had great knowledge of the product. Dee was also very helpful when ordering. Her job would be made easier though if there was a more efficient way for the customer to measure up the lengths required. It took me a while to get my head around measurements and I had to rely on Dee to confirm the lengths. Maybe some clever software could help there, which would relieve the pressure off Dee to have to confirm all the measurements. Just a thought. Thank you.

The Canadian Red Cedar that Vastern supplied has helped CRD Bath, our builder, to create a spectacular house. We have used it for cladding the first floor and the soffits of all of the overhangs. Vastern planed the timber to uniform profiles throughout and the quality of the workmanship on site has resulted in a superb job.
