Bearing in my mind that my personal experience during the pandemic is that a lot of places I have dealt with have had problems working to their usual standard (which is understandable I know, but still a pain), so was fully expecting a long wait and different issues with a reprint of a book. I am very impressed with the quality of the printing and binding of the product. At every stage of our contract with the company they were very solicitous. I am using my wife's Google account for this review. As you will have noticed i have awarded Book Print UK with the maximum stars. Like many others I suspect I wrote my book during lock down. A testing time for us all particularly for office staff, the majorly of whom were working from home. Just how Book Print managed to overcome these trials was amazing. Of course with only a skeleton crew working at the office, I encountered some design hiccups and a tad of frustration but all in all I am delighted with the outcome. No one at Book Print threw in the towel - on the contrary they painstakingly ensured that my book would leave the depot just as i requested. I am most grateful to them all.

I think any advert needs to make clear that the turn-around time is from the date of approval of proof, not necessarily from date of initial submission of work. It was a learning curve for me with a self imposed deadline for Christmas. As a first time author (a simple family history) I made several mistakes which were not caught by me or by the Book Printers. First, my name was misspelled by the designer at Book Printers on the cover (on the spine cover) but correct on the front cover itself. I did not notice this. Next, I submitted a standard A4 word document and asked for an A5 book printed. The font and resulting images were much too small, as I did not realize Book Printers would simply shrink to fit, rather than add pages keeping the original sizes as submitted. A novice needs to know that this will occur as he will need to reformat his document (a laborious job). Third, an author should ask for colour printing as it costs very little over black and white. Otherwise, Book Printers were good communicators and their product was delivered quickly. My fault the final product did not met my expectations I guess.

The help we had to get us started was great. The service was quick to the proof stage. We were not happy with the finish of the edges of our proof cover which looked like they had been cut on a blunt machine. We were told that the "damage" was caused by the bubble wrap envelope it was sent in. Not convinced about that we changed to a white background and all was good. Unfortunately this problem caused a delay but all was well in the end. I would use this firm again but try to leave more time for any problems to be resolved.

Over the past few weeks I have produced two very different anthologies with the help of Book Printing UK. I worked with two teams of writers who were different to my usual co-producers, so it was good to have the continuity of support from Book Printing UK. In the first book we wanted to re-create the look of a series of pamphlets that were published in the 1970s with a simple staple binding. The second book was a much more glossy affair with colour photographs dispersed among the poems. Both books have turned out exactly as I had envisaged them. This is much to the credit of the ease of use of the systems employed by Book Printing along with their helpful and sympathetic staff who are able to take ideas and transform them into good hard copy.

Placing an order, communication with ‘real’ people and response to order requirements were all first class. Turn round time was excellent with courier 24+ parcel force delivery. (This service not as good as I initially thought when parcels shipped on a Friday). Whilst there was a minor issue with a few copies this was immediately addressed without query and replacement publications sent out by return. The quality was far better than I could produce using a home printer and for the small number of copies required (30 each of 30 colour/b and w pages). My printing order was in respect to my father who had recently passed and who had been compiling a book. Therefore this was a bittersweet time for me. I can't say that getting it finished and printed was a pleasant experience but it was printed and received within the stipulated time frame. But, having expressed the reasons for the printing I was upset that when the parcel arrived it came with a printed leaflet of congratulations and well done, which was insensitive. It was easier to phone and deal with them directly rather than on-line, as that was just confusing, but when phoning they were helpful and supportive hence four stars and not three with the insensitive literature accompanying the printed book. This was a one off, so unlikely to require them again but wouldn't rule them out but would ensure that next time, I wasn't rushed. It wasn't quite what I expected but it has been well received by those who received a copy as a gift. Time will tell how it lasts, but the pages are already waving up with the damp weather we have had.
