Following severe pain on my left leg, I started physiotherapy to try to ease the apparent sciatica symptoms I had. However, after a period of time, the symptoms did not improve. Hence, I had an MRI scan that showed a large left sided L5/S1 disc, compressing the left S1. With this diagnosis I was referred to a spinal surgeon.
Luckily enough I got in contact with Mr Al-Mahfoudh, he reviewed the results of the initial MRI scan, and then he provided me with the options I had to overcome the situation. He also gave me information of the different procedures that I could have including the advantages and disadvantages of each of these.
Initially, I decided to wait and see if my body was able to recover by itself, but this did not happen. Instead the pain and amount of painkillers I was taking was increasing significantly. So, I decided to go for the surgery which at the beginning I was a little bit nervous and hesitant.
I had another appointment with Mr Al-Mahfoudh, in this appointment he requested an updated MRI scan and kindly explained again the pros and cons of the surgery. He gave me confidence with his experience, knowledge, care and professionalism and I felt that I could not be in better hands.
I can say that Mr Al-Mahfoudh cared for my health before and after the surgery, he let me know straight after the surgery that everything was alright. He also highlighted all the measurements that I needed to take during my recovery to prevent any recurrence.
Nearly two weeks now after my surgery, all the symptoms I had along with the pain are completely gone. Mr Al-Mahfound is the best at what he does, I could not recommend him enough. All I feel is gratitude for his help, care and support and for giving me back the most precious gift that life can give which is health and a life with no pain. God bless you!
Mr Al-Mahdound and his team in the Nuffield Health Hospital in Brighton really care for their patients.

Very remiss of me not to share my experience earlier. I had been suffering from severe nerve pain radiating from my neck all the way down to my hand for 2 years. Following scans, X-rays and MRI, I had a two level ACDF and plate C4/5 and C5/6. Following surgery I had a neck brace for 6 weeks, slowly building up activities. It has taken 7 months but I am now pain free. I would highly recommend Mr Al-Mahfoudh and his team. The care I received from start to finish was outstanding. Thank you. Lisa Prior

I consulted with Mr Al-Mahfoudh with chronic neck pain of duration at least 12 months. My pain was intensifying, becoming debilitating, and escalating doses of painkillers were not providing relief from pain. After a number of diagnostic scans, CT-SPECT identified the site of pain to be C1-C2. With that knowledge, fusion surgery was agreed after much discussion, and this was performed in September 2022.
I am delighted with the outcome: at 2 months post-surgery, I have complete resolution of pain. My limitations in neck movement seem inconsequential given the outcome, and are no worse than that prior to surgery, when neck motion was limited due to pain.
I highly recommend Mr Al-Mahfoudh, as I do fusion surgery for anyone in a similar situation to mine. Not only because of my outcome, but also because of the positive endorsements from many of his colleagues during my hospital visits, I am confident that Mr Al-Mahfoudh is a very talented surgeon.

Mr. Rafid Al-Mahfoudh has operated on my neck twice and both times it was a success, from not being able to complete day to day tasks, I am now back working full time and feel like my old self again.
I was very nervous for my second operation but all the team made the whole experience manageable.
I would highly recommend Mr Al-Mahfoudh as he is a straight talker and amazing surgeon.

I was in Nuffield hospital on 17th June for surgery on my spine. I could go on and on about how well you are looked after by every one of the staff. When it comes to the surgery I can not praise Mr al-mahfoudh enough for what he has done for me, he is a very nice man and great surgeon, your in the right hands that's for sure.

Normally I’m a very fit person but suffered occasional bouts of sciatica in my left leg. I booked an appointment with a physiotherapist for help. However, on the morning of my appointment I awoke in so much pain and weakness in my leg that I was unable to walk or stand for more than a minute or so. I decided to attend the appointment that day with the physiotherapist and he ordered urgent X-rays and MRI scans of my hip and lumbar vertebrae.
Based on the results of these, I was referred to Mr Al-Mahfoudh who diagnosed a lateral disc bulge and ligamentum hypertrophy causing left exit foraminal stenosis (bulging disc pressing on my sciatic nerve). Mr Al-Mafoudh offered me several management options and I agreed to a L5 nerve block (corticosteroid injection). Unfortunately this didn’t improve the problem and I had spinal surgery 7 weeks ago (L5/S1 TLIF - Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion). The operation was successful and I am now walking again, pain free and gradually coming off strong painkillers. (Until my operation I had attended all my appointments in a wheelchair.)
I have felt complete confidence under the care of Mr Al-Mahfoudh from my initial visit to now in my recovery. He is professional in his approach and kept me fully informed of what was involved in both procedures and going forward. Mr Al-Mahfoudh is an exceptional neurosurgeon who has given me my life back and I am happy to highly recommend Mr Al-Mahfoudh.

I'd been managing my sciatica (L5:S1 herniation - mild to debilitating levels of pain) for over 5 years with lifestyle changes, exercise, medication and even a couple of corticosteroid injections (the last one regrettably had no effect).
The latest episode worsened over a period of 6 months and an MRI showed the herniation had recurred to a significantly greater extent, and medication was no longer sufficient to allow me to live or work regularly.
After contacting Mr Al-Mahfoudh, he was extremely quick to meet me, review my symptoms, and perform a right L5:S1 microdiscectomy after carefully explaining the risks and possible improvements of the procedure. This was extremely reassuring and the procedure has so far (one month after the operation) been a huge improvement.

An amazing experience, surgery by Dr Rafid Al-Mahfoudh has changed my life and I am now totally pain free and getting my life back. I was referred very lucky to see him in The Royal Sussex A&E when in absolute agony from back and leg pain. He saw me very quickly and I had a microdiscectomy at L5/S1 just a few weeks later. He explained the whole process to me and made me feel at ease. Even when I was nervous about having the surgery he called me at home and talked me through the process. Cannot recommend enough.

I was referred to Mr Al-Mahfoudh via A&E at St Richards Hospital, Chichester after I had been sent there by my GP because of shooting pains in both legs. He arranged for MRI and CT Scans plus an x-ray of my lower back before an out-patient appointment towards the end of April. When I saw Mr Al-Mahfoudh he was extremely thorough having studied the scans and x-ray before I saw him. He explained the options available including surgery and gave detailed information about the surgery including potential benefits and risks. I felt very confident in his abilities and so decided there and then to go for the surgery which would be an L3/4 Discectomy and L2/3 and L3/4 Laminectomy. He followed up with details in a letter. I was admitted to Brighton Nuffield Hospital in early June for the operation which went well and I was discharged home after 2 days. The shooting pain from my lower back down both legs immediately ceased. The operation wound healed quickly and stitches were removed by Mr Al-Mahfoudh 12 days after the operation. I still have very slight numbness in my legs and some discomfort in my back but both are improving quickly. So just under 3 weeks after the operation I am much improved and once my strength is built up I am sure will be able to resume activities such as cycling which I previously greatly enjoyed. So my personal thanks to Mr Al-Mahfoudh for his expertise in providing the surgery that has led to the much improved situation. I also wanted to thank Zoe, Mr Al-Mahfoudh's PA who is very friendly and helpful and also the staff at Brighton Nuffield Hospital including nurses, doctors, theatre staff, physiotherapists and housekeeping staff all of who were very caring and professional and contributed in many different ways to the successful outcome.

Mr Al-Mahfoudh carried out a successful spinal decompression and Coflex implant for me on the 8th of January 2021.
The operation itself was completely painless and I was mobile again within 24 hours, wearing a back brace for 6 weeks as a precaution, I have made a painless full recovery within 12 weeks.
I am very grateful to Mr Al-Mahfoudh for his advice and care and would throughly recommend him should you need back surgery.

After over 2 years of repeat hospital admissions with suspected cauda equina, continuous pain, the inability to walk without using crutches and NHS limited support; I discovered Mr Al-Mahfoudh! I was referred to him through my medical insurance provider and has an appointment within a couple of weeks. He listened to my issues and immediately sent me for xrays. I had many scans and tests with the NHS but not to much avail. Mr Al-Mahfoudh wanted to get xrays of me standing as well as laying down as this was when the pain was at its worst... something the NHS hadn't listened to. This standing xray showed the real depth of my issue with my spine and the spondylolisthesis slippage. From there he was able to suggest a spinal fusion procedure which would correct the spine and remove my ever-growing pain! I was booked in for the operation within 4 weeks and the surgery was a great success. After recovery, I am now 6 months post op and I can honestly say this operation has changed my life for the better. I went from hardly being able to walk to now being about to play with toys on the floor with my children. Some pain still remains when I overdo activities but nothing that I wouldn't have expected. Now I am able, I am working on getting my body back in shape and having the strength to be healthy and fit with my new strong back! :) Thank you Mr Al-Mahfoudh for giving me my life back!

I first meet Mr Al-Mahfoudh in October 2019 when I was in spinal cord compression. He immediately put me at ease and I felt total confidence and trust in him . My operation for T6/7. Laminectomy and resection of a tumour was very successful and I regained my full mobility from needing a wheelchair & Zimmer frame back to the dance floor . Under mri surveillance, Mr Al-Mahfoudh picked up that the tumour had started to grow again and I needed another operation. I felt very thankful that I was under his expert care and cannot thank him enough for saving my mobility. He has an excellent bedside manner and took time to explain to me what was happening, he answered any questions that I had and made me feel safe in his hands. I would highly recommend him as a world class neuro surgeon !

Before I saw Mr Al-Mahfoudh, I was in constant pain for nearly 20 years. He suggested a lumbar fusion operation, which I agreed to. I had my surgery in Nuffield Hospital, the staff there were amazing and made my stay as comfortable as possible. I am now nearly 6 months post op and my life has completely changed. I no longer have ANY back pain, and am already back at work doing a physical job. This operation was life changing for me. Thank you Mr Al-Mahfoudh!

I was referred to Mr Rafid Al-Mahfoudh due to the complexity of the surgery I required to my neck.
Before my operation I could not hold a knife, write and was in considerable pain, taking numerous strong drugs.
On my first consultation Mr Al-Mahfoudh fully explained the procedure that was required and what I could expect afterwards. He was very informative and addressed all of my concerns.
My first procedure was cancelled due to Covid but Mr Al-Mahfoudh’s secretary, Isabella kept me fully updated and as soon as was possible the procedure was rescheduled.
I have now fully recovered from the procedure and I have full use of my hand and I am virtually pain free.
I have been able to stop my medication and feel a new person.
I cannot thank Mr Al-Mahfoudh enough for his expertise and care – I now have my life back to normal.
Also I would like to thank Isabella who was brilliant and always so happy to help.

In late 2018 I was getting an almost permanent headache.
After a few visits to my GP I requested to see a specialist and insisted on an MRI, the results showed a Brain Tumour of a significant size.
After checking with my insurance provider I was given a list of potential specialists.
I narrowed it down to Mr Al-Mahfoudh based on his reviews, reputation and experience.
He quickly arranged my operation, which happened in February 2019.
The operation was done privately at Brighton County Hospital and was a complete success. He was able to remove the Tumour completely, it went off for a biopsy and luckily it wasn't cancerous.
I had a follow up MRI after a short recovery, then also a 6 month one last week, with the results showing that i'm all clear.
A great result, meaning i can focus on the future.
My thanks go to Mr Al-Mafhoudh and his amazing secretary Isabella for their care, consideration, expertise and professionalism.

I was referred to Rafid just before lockdown in March and he was amazing about getting my scans and follow up appointments arranged rapidly. I had been having head/neck/arm and hand pains for a while and was struggling to use my left hand properly. Rafid was incredibly reassuring, caring and professional. Anyone who has to see a neurosurgeon will know how scary it is...Rafid is an expert in assuaging any worries. He performed ulnar nerve decompression and relocation surgery in September (the earliest the hospital could get me in) and it has made an enormous difference to my mobility and pain levels. I would 100% recommend Rafid. His excellent humour, professionalism and expertise is second to none. Thank you for fixing me Rafid! One day we will have you singing solos at Carnegie!

Mr Al-Mahfoudh gave me my life back following chronic sciatica. I myself am a healthcare professional so repairing me also helped the health service too. Thanks so much
