Reviews of Shawbirch Medical Centre
R.
Our family has been with this practice for a little over 20 years now from when we moved in to Wellington way back in 2000. The surgery has consistently been exceptional in provision of GP services (I'm prompted to write this review having seen all the tales of woe from other GP practices around the country in the news today, and being signed up to Shawbirch feels like a whole different health service). I've had the misfortune to need the practice for broken bones, joint issues, breathing problems, and a bunch of other things over the decades. I have never failed to get at least a telephone appointment on the day requested (and the phone queuing system now makes it easy to contact the practice in the busy morning period). The telephone callbacks always happen, and I've often been called in to see someone the same day when needed. The reception staff are usually busy but have always been helpful and professional. I've had effective referrals to hospital services such as TeMS; as a family we've had referrals to specialists when needed, repeat prescriptions, etc. We get follow-ups when promised and other than one occasion where a repeat prescription didn't appear when expected, I can't recall ever having been let down. Summary is that as a GP practice this place has its challenges and to be frank, for the broader healthcare provision SaTH definitely has trouble with anything chronic. I'm sure some personal experiences differ but we've managed to try most GP level services somehow. I can say that signing the family on here was one of the best choices we made when we arrived. After more than 20 years using the service, I would still say that this GP practice is superb.

I registered at this practice a couple of months ago due to moving to the area and have been extremely impressed with the service offered. The friendliness and helpfulness of the reception staff cannot be faulted and the efficiency in getting me seen by a GP was fantastic. I feel very lucky to be with such a reliable GP practice.

Absolutely fantastic service given by Shawbirch Medical Centre. I look after my elderly mothers medical details and the Practice have been brilliant every time I have needed to contact them. This morning I rang and was connected without much delay even though I was on a queue. After taking in a sample at 10-00 I was contacted by a lovely lady doctor! Yes a doctor, not a Receptionist on behalf of a doctor. I am so grateful to them for such a fantastic service

Just got off a call with Rachel from the reception team and was extremely happy with the level of service I received.
Polite, friendly and informative. She organised a doctor to call me with no fuss and recommended the best option for me to update my medical records. If only more GP's had the same care as Rachel and the reception team here.
Thank you again.

I cannot recommend or thank enough the staff at this surgery, reception staff, GPs, Nurses are all amazing. Always able to see a GP face to face if needed even from the start of the pandemic to present. This is an excellent community GP surgery, I am really glad to be registered here. I hope the great service continues.

The GPs at this practice are empathic and professional. I have total trust in my doctor, who understands my needs. It’s true that it can be difficult to secure an appointment, as they’re so busy, but I have found the reception staff to be courteous and helpful. They do a difficult job, under challenging circumstances, and do their best to facilitate appointments and telephone consultations. I would like to extend special thanks to Carole, who has gone above and beyond what could be reasonably expected.

Been at these doctors for 20 years now (all my life) and I've most certainly had my fair share of illnesses and doctors appointments. I've always been able to get same day appointments if needed and always able to request a all back from an on call doctor.
They are great when it comes to mental health and they actually listen.
Only 1 down point is trying to get through first thing in the morning can be a struggle; of which i speak in experience.

As for the positives... Generally most doctors are nice, and the on call doctor system is very good if you are not able to get an appointment but need to speak to a doctor urgently.
As for the negatives..
1. Appointments have to be booked at 8.30 every morning first come first serve, if you ring after 9am most likely the appointments will be gone. If you book on their website it's for the upcoming weeks, so if you need an appointment any time soon your only way is to ring up every morning. This isn't a good practice for people who work because with work you have to book the day off and then you might not even get an appointment anyway.
2. If you want to speak to a doctor about your concerns (say you're seeing a specific doctor about a treatment plan) you have to book a telephone appointment which again can be a week away. If you ask a receptionist (depending on the receptionist) to send a email they may or may not send one - depending on person. Some receptionists can have a horrible attitude on the phone, some are caring and understanding.
3. You'll most likely be sitting waiting for an appointment for about 15 mins - sometimes even 30 mins and you'll hear nothing until you tell the receptionist how long you've been waiting, then they'll find out what's going on. Yet if you're late and have decency to ring them up, they will be rude about it. At this point I don't know why I even bothered making an effort ringing up and letting them know. I've never been late in 25 years but unfortunately today I was due to circumstances I could not control and the receptionist 'Deborah' was not a understanding lady. I do wonder if she's rude to the doctors as she was to me when they are running late. (this is actually what triggered me to write this review).
4. If you booked an appointment with a doctor you've been seeing and they cannot make it you won't be notified and you'll see a different doctor that can't help you because you are seeing another specific doctor. The doctor you are originally seeing is the one who can only give you treatment - so if you see anyone else regarding that, they can't help you (unless it's like needing antibiotics or something). This is a problem when a doctor is away and you urgently need a sick note or to be seen about your situation.
5. I was on long term sick and the same doctor I was told had to be the one to sign me off (by giving me a sick note every 2 weeks). When I couldn't get through to her from one of the obstacles I describe above, other doctors could only write a week "as a one off". Not a lot of doctors are willing to visit you at home either. They could have easily assessed me to verify my sickness, but they didn't.
6. In the practice they try to advise people to book nurse appointments for minor things but again, the booking system... Its worse than needing a doctor, there's never any on the day appointments when I try, no matter how early I ring. If they want people to book more nurse appointments over doctor appointments, they need more nurse staff... If someone is in pain with a UTI, they're not going to wait a week for an appointment, you'd see a doctor - especially since you can ring on the day for one.
7. Need an xray? Even a small one like on your foot or hand? They can't do it and recommend you go to A&E. Meanwhile hospitals complain about how too many people are in accident and emergency and urges people to see doctors instead. How can we if doctor practices don't even have a small xray facility?

The nurses are particularly good. Have used services for 15 years. I don't visit often but whenever I call for appt with a gp, I get one same day. My husband uses Wellington which is shockingly bad in comparison.

I had a blood test recently at Shawbirch medical Centre and the nurse was excellent. I find the nurses are always on time with appointments, they are cheerful, polite and respectful of your needs.

Shawbury is a very good doctors surgery it is difficult getting an app but if you start calling at 0830 you are more than able to get an app that day
