Our German Shepherd Devon is quite needy (typical) and it's hard to know where to leave him but I feel at ease with Hilltop. He can take a while to warm up to strangers and when he's a bit stressed he has a loud bark but the staff at Hilltop are so good with him and really make you feel at ease. They are so used to all sorts of dogs with varying temperament, I sometimes feel like our boy is high maintenance but they're used to it there! It's nothing new. They're very honest about everything and Devon always comes home in good spirits, clean and content! Highly recommended, Devon will be staying there a few times this year and wouldn't go anywhere else unless we had to.

A brilliant kennels would highly recommend!! We were quite anxious about leaving our nervous border collie Alfie who can be tricky with other people but we had no need to be worried at all as he was very well looked after and extremely happy with all the team. It was so lovely to receive an email with picture while we were away. Thank you for making Alfie’s stay a happy one.

Just picked up our four fur babies from a two week stay here today (their first time with Hilltop) and couldn’t be happier with how they have been treated!! The online booking system is really helpful and they come back smelling like they had been at the dog spa….they seemed happy within themselves and all items that went with them all returned easily (doesn’t always happen in other places) I also checked in when on holiday just to make sure everything was okay and was given a lovely and prompt response which helps when you are away. I have not used the boarding kennel yet, only the shop, but I will when needed because I have been impressed in every interaction I have had there. The managers/staff are very knowledgeable and helpful, and also can provide 1:1 dog (owner!) training if required. The shop sells a wide range of premium dog food of their own recipes, as well as lots of all-natural treats, e.g. pigs' ears and fish skin cubes (crunchy). They can accommodate 60 dogs, and all of them have two walks a day plus some time off-lead in an enclosed field. This is in a semi-rural location so is a quiet environment surrounded mostly by fields. I recommend you give them a call if you have any doggy worries or want to put your pooch or moggy into a nice place while you enjoy your holiday. (I have no connection with this company other than as a customer.)

I've boarded my dogs here many times in the last year, I can't fault them. My dogs come out clean and cared for which is really important to me. They also do there own dog food which has reduced my dogs breath and they love it. Great kennels and great staff.

My very nervous doggy spent a couple of nights here whilst we moved. He was treated carefully and noted that he was anxious and didn't eat much... But he was well looked after and when he got home he ate a whole bowl of food and a large water. He is settling in nicely and now lying fast asleep in his bed.. Best kennels ever. My boy storm don't like men and although the owner is male he was brilliant and so patient with him, all the girls are also great with him. Elsa our beautiful German Shepherd dog just loves Simon and her holidays at Hilltop! We have been boarding her there from a puppy and since Simon and Christina took ownership. They are a fantastic team there warm and friendly and nothing is ever too much trouble. It is lovely to see how much has been done to improve the kennels and the time and hard work they have all put in. The improvements are always continuing to make for a splendid environment for both dogs and cats. What a lovely place. My cat Daisy has had to spend more time here recently than I'd have liked BUT safe to say me and her are more than pleased with the treatment she receives. Daisy has been pictured kissing and headbutting the ladies who take great care of her during her stays. The chalets have great indoor and outdoor spaces for each cat which is lovely. I even had to keep phoning to extend her stay and they were so accommodating. Thank you everyone at hilltop! Xx

Cannot fault Hilltop, its the only place we feel comfortable with leaving our greyhound. We have taken our dog here for the past couple of years and he never wants to leave when we pick him up, from the owners to the kennel girls, they treat our dog as part of their own family. Our 1 year old Springer Spaniel had his first all over hair cut, nails trimmed and to finish it off a bath. He came home looking beautiful - it was a lovely cut and I am really pleased with it. I have been bringing Wolf to Hilltop Kennels for over a year, and am so glad I found it - it's brilliant. Wolf is always happy to be left there, and the staff are invariably caring and vigilant; I always have peace of mind that he is being well looked after, and it's a really secure setting - very necessary for an ex-Romanian rescue dog. The staff are warm and friendly, and the fact that Wolf greets them so enthusiastically speaks volumes. I would strongly recommend Hilltop to anyone!

My dogs have been to Hilltop several times now - they are always keen to go in and see Simon and the team and seem to have a great time when they are there. I live locally and when I walk my dogs past the kennels they always want to go in to say hello! My terriers are very well looked after at Hilltop and are welcomed like family each time they go. I go off on holiday without a moments' worry about my dogs (even though they can be a bit of a handful and are escape-artists!). I took my newly acquired rescue dog to visit the kennels and staff today - so that she won't feel scared when she goes to stay. Simon and the team were as welcoming as ever and Pippin had a good look round the kennels and the field. She and I now feel much happier about the prospect of a little sleepover!

My fiancee and I boarded our Cat Timmy here for a week in April 2014 and he received nothing short of fantastic service. Simon and Christine are so friendly and really take pride in looking after the animals, ensuring they have a comfortable stay. We were so impressed that Timmy has already been booked in for 2 more short weekend stays over the next few months!. We would highly recommend the Hilltop Cattery and Kennels as you can be assured that your pets will be very well looked after.

In short: Very, very highly recommended :) The long version: Simon and Chris couldn't have been more patient with my neurotic questions (there have always been dogs in the family but this is my first foray into kitty ownership, and the first time they'd been away from me, so there was lots to ask about!) and caring with my kittens, from my first unannounced visit when they showed me round all the facilities, to when I dropped off and picked up my girls for their first stay. On my first visit, I could see all the other residents looked happy and healthy, and after seeing the chalet my kittens would be staying in I was further reassured they'd be in safe, warm and clean accommodation, with regular feeds and human contact. And an outdoor run as well so they could watch birds just like they do from my living room window! Dropping them off and settling them in was also lovely, and I felt I could take as long as I wanted to make sure I was happy and they were happy. Of course, being cats, they were far too curious about exploring their new space to be remotely bothered that I was saying goodbye! I had expected to hate leaving them behind, but actually knowing they were in the safe hands of animal lovers, I was able to focus on the trade show and not worry about them. On being reunited with them on Wednesday they were perfectly happy, purry and would probably have been quite happy to stay longer! They've settled back home straight away, not sulking like people told me they would after being in a cattery. All in all, I am delighted, relieved, and so pleased that when I have to go away for longer, later in the year, I can leave my kitties at Hilltop and know they'll be safe, happy and well cared for by fellow animal lovers. What more could a kitty parent want? :)

When we moved in to the area we wanted a kennel and cattery for our cat and dog we found Hilltop and what a great find, our dog loves it there and the owners are very professional caring and take great care of our pets when they stay there! Very happy with Hilltop Kennels. Our dog has been a guest on numerous occasions and always trots off happily without a backward glance, oblivious to our own personal separation anxieties. We feel that the staff are genuinely fond of him and that it this more than just a job for them. The photos posted on Facebook are a particularly nice touch and very reassuring for us when away. Choosing a kennels is always difficult. It was for us. But we had a number of recommendations for Hilltop from other dog lovers and we are pleased we took their advice. Take it from us, look no further, these are good kennels that won't disappoint.

I moved my dog (Jasper) to Hilltop Kennels earlier this year and he has stayed with them on a number of occasions this year, with another short stay planned mid December What I find great is the high standard of care and accommodation that Jasper receives - and the obvious choice of staff - who have been chosen for their genuine love of dogs and I suspect all animals. I put my 2 Huskies into Hilltop for the first time this week for a 4 night stay. I am new to the area and chose Hilltop as it had the best ratings for all the Kennels in Colchester and had good reviews. After checking out the website I liked the look of the kennels and the more personal touch that was offered for example a wide variety of food options and kong toys provided to the dogs during the day. After to speaking with Simon I felt like my dogs were going to be well looked after. On the day of taking them I took the dogs into the kennel and settled them in, all the kennels were clean and Simon took the time to tell me a little about some of the dogs that he had boarding there. This to me showed how much he cared about each and every dog they were looking after. I left feeling settled knowing that they would be well looked after. Upon picking my dogs up I was again greeted by Simon and taken to the kennel to collect my dogs. They were both very happy and didn't have that smell that sometimes dogs get when they have been in kennels, again all kennels were clean. I was extremely happy with the service at Hilltop kennels and would highly recommend this kennel, I will definitely be using them again.

I don't normally bother writing reviews. But I just had to on this occasion. We have recently picked up our 8 month old cockapoo puppy Teddy. This was teddy's first time away from us as we was away for 2 weeks on holiday. My wife and i looked around many kennels before booking our boy in and non of them came close to hilltop. The staff are a credit to the kennels. Obviously being our first time putting our boy in was a bit stressful for us to say the least. However we did not need to worry. From the first time the member of staff (really sorry didn't get her name) she was brilliant with our boy and made him feel at home. You know when someone knows a bit about dogs and she certainly did making me more at ease. Question where asked at start such as food etc. Very professional i must say. We follow them on Facebook and asked for photos a slow mo video, which they kept to their word. We did message a few times while away and Simon came back each time (sorry about how many Simon) haha. Each time giving us updates and making us enjoy our holiday even more knowing our boy being looked after. When picking up teddy i knew straight away he had a great time tail in the air, he even kissed the girl goodbye. I am so glad we have found hilltop. Please don't bother with your time looking elsewhere you wont find anything as good. Teddy will be coming back and booking on line makes it so easy. A BIG THANK YOU to all staff at hilltop. Seems to be a clean & friendly kennels, new family owners who were kind enough to show me round and took great interest in my greyhound Benjy. They were happy to feed my Benjy the food he usually has at home, when I went to pick him up I saw them walking him over one of their fields so they obviously do exercise them! Another year for our doggies staying at Hilltop, fantastic service yet again, one of our Sharpeis needed veterinary care for an ulcer in her eye that she had before she went into Hilltop ( unknowly to us) , I was phoned and emailed regularly with updates, eye is almost better, they really looked after her well, we also used the groomers for the first time and was very impressed, not only did both dogs come back in great condition, smelling lively there was also no kennel smell on their bed either. Highly recommend this kennels, would not go anywhere else.

Hi All We was worried about putting our Bongo n Izzy in kennels as they are only 7 months old . But after useing Hilltop what a great job the staff did in looking after them when we picked them up after a week they was clean and very happy the Hilltop girls where great with our pups would recomend 100% .

The first time we took her there, we explained that it was the first time she had been in kennels & that she was quite nervous, Simon put us at our ease & Kizzy was all over him. We picked her up a few days later & she looked great & obviously had the time of her life. We would have no hesitation in recommending Hilltop to anybody thinking of using them, & indeed we have done to our friends. All of the staff are really great with Kizzy & she can't wait to get through the door to start her holiday! Christina is lovely to speak to on the phone - knowledgable, articulate and polite. Unfortunately we had to make some changes to our reservation due to extenuating circumstances, and these were done with understanding and without fuss. Christina also explained the attention and care that the dogs will receive in great detail, responding to every question and specific request/detail about our dogs, and welcomed us to come visit the kennels to see for ourselves and ask further questions, prior to a booking. We're already feeling reassured that this will be our 'go-to' kennel in the future, and I shall post a review come September, after collecting our 'furkids'. Thanks!

Having used Hilltop Cat hotel several times - like most people we had certain reservation with the new management but need not have worried. From initial meeting with Simon and placing the cats ( Ronin, Mischief and Louie) into his care, he and his staff are nothing if not professional and considerate. On the last visit again this showed, remembering the characters of our cats and in particular Mischief (of nervous disposition). Cannot say how much peace of mind we have knowing that they are looked after as if their own personal pets.

I picked my puppy Roxey up today after a short stay at hilltop and must say what a fantastic place this is. They bend over backwards to please the owners and the dogs nothink seem to much for them to please . The cat hotel is amazing they have their own indoor area which has shelves in with a bed and food bowls and underfloor heating it's very clean and all the cats seemed very chilled they also have their own catio which they can get to through the cat flap with the litter box and toys. They can watch the birds here and sunbathe in the summer :)

Charlie has just spent the last week here which I was anxious about as he has only ever been into kennels once before. When I picked him up he was happy, pampered and could see everyone had taken a shine to him, also all his bedding had been washed and Charlie also had had a bath to come home.
