Reviews of Gables Dogs & Cats Home

We’ve just adopted our two kittens Luna & Cassi and the adoption process was really easy with great help and advice from the start. Gables wanted to make sure they were going to a safe & loving home, they do follow up calls to make sure everything is going well & are on hand for any questions you may have.
If you are thinking of adopting a pet we can thoroughly recommend Gables Farm.

Just want to say a big thank you to Gables Farm. My dog Rex done his first boarding in kennels with you bank holiday weekend just gone. I was so nervous and anxious as to how he would cope as he is a nervous dog, but when I rang after his first day and night there you said that he done really well and he was happy with the staff who were looking after him. This put me at ease as and made me feel relaxed on the final day and night of his stay.
Will definitely have him booked in with you again and have already recommended yourselves to friends of mine. Again thank you so much.

The team at gables were extremely knowledgeable and able to advise my mum on the age of cat that she would be suited to. Originally she wanted a kitten, but after some sound advice from the staff, she took on Molly, an older cat, which suited both the cat and my mums situation. We can't thank them enough and are very pleased to be able to give a forever home to a lovely cat. Fantastic place, fantastic staff. Can't recommend highly enough. Listen to their advice and you can't go too far wrong :)

Thankyou so much for all the staff at Gables Cats & Dogs boarding kennels in Plymouth.
Grace stayed with you for the 1st time. Although, she was very scared, anxious and nervous and wouldn't come out of her kennel for 3 days you coaxed her out with chicken and ham. Grace made some lovely new friends and even made friends with a man !!!! (Dan) 😃 . Already booked again for next year.
Thank you to Ruth for the updates and kindness which was so appreciated 💗

I highly recommend Gables, they are very professional and obviously devoted to what they do. Adoption process for our cat was straightforward and well matched, Tinkerbelle has been boss of the family for 6 months. I hope to use Gables in the future to rehome another!

Such an Amazing place!
We’ve just adopted our new member of the family Jam, and i can’t rate the people at Gables enough!
Although their process can be slightly lengthier than others, i believe it is 100% the correct way to go about it. They are incredibly compassionate and responsible with how they go about adoptions, making sure that each animal will fit in and ultimately belong with their new adopted family.
They give you all the help and advice you’d ever need and overall just amazingly friendly people
Very easy 5* review 😁

We would love to say a massive thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone at Gables…..today we brought Pillsbury the pug home to his forever home. He has settled in well in just a few hours, amazing.little boy!
Everyone at Gables have really done Pillsbury proud, he has been so loved and cared for there. The adoption process was smooth, takes a little time but it’s essential for the dog that everyone and everything is right for him. It’s the animal who is the main priority with Gables and that’s exactly how it should be.They have a massive responsibility to these dogs and cats to find them the right home and they do it so well.
So a big thank you to Ruth, Jodie, Vicky, Emily and all the staff, with lots of love from, Karen, Richard, Emily and last but not least Pillsbury xxxxx

Our 1 year old cat Stig had his first boarding experience with Gables farm. We were worried he would be stressed out and not eat but he came back so relaxed and happy and in perfect condition. He was so pleased to see us and was very vocal about it! The handover from one of the team members was great, you could tell they keep a close eye on the cats and had been monitoring behaviours. We will definitely be boarding him with them in the future. A brilliant service and great cause.

Adopted my gorgeous new boy from Gables. They were fantastic from start to finish, providing me with heaps of info about my boy and the adoption process, asking me loads of questions to ensure I was suitable and a good match. Everything was explained well to me and I was given loads of information on what I needed to do and what next steps would be throughout. Emily, in particular was great. I cannot thank Gables enough for my new friend.

Had the most amazing experience with Gables when adopting our 2 beautiful cats. So much information given and excellent communication from them. Couldn't fault the process at all. We are so happy with our 2 babies. If you can, please help all these wonderful animals looking for their forever homes💜

Over the past few years we have been lucky enough to add 3 beautiful cats from Gables to our family. The staff ensured that we had a suitable environment and were given advice on how to get them settled in and introduced to our other cats.
As we live fairly close to a main road we had the garden enclosed by Plymouth Decking and Landscaping and this was all checked out on a home visit.
Highly recommend Gables. The animals welfare is paramount throughout .Staff professional, friendly and knowledgeable.

Cannot thank the deputy manager, Ruth, enough for her genuine care and help for me and my babies. I am so grateful for everything and there such an amazing foundation and help any animal that's in need of rehoming. Please do all the animals a small favour and donate something for them like food or bedding anything pet related. Thank you gables you Really are life savers. Very appreciated 🙏 amazing people ❤️

Thank you Gables Farm for our lovely puppy, Tuppence. A lot of care and knowledge went into the adoption process, and matching us up, and she has had the very best start under your care. She has settled in very happily with us, and the other dogs love her too. Keep up your amazing work!

We rehomed 2 black cats from Gables around 3 years ago. They are brother and sister and had already been rehomed and returned once in their short lives. Gables offer an unrivaled service - from making sure the cats are in the right home, vaccinated, neutered, flea treated and wormed before removing. Furthermore, they are always happy and willing to offer follow up advice and support for the life of the pet. The really do have the animals best interest at the forefront and act accordingly.

All Gables staff are very knowledgeable and friendly, our experience with the staff we dealt with was first class and they really know what they're talking about.
The shop is great too and has a good choice as well as the new Gables merchandise which looks really nice and their dog harnesses work really well and are very affordable.

Ruth and her team at gables dogs and cats home have helped my mums 3 dogs as she has just passed away from cancer and without Ruth I could not have coped the lady Ruth should be knighted for all she's done for me and my mums 3 dogs in keeping them fed and medicated daily as some were very ill but she stepped in washes them gets soaking wet but shows no weakness at all just wants too make sure that my late mums dogs are well and happy for no reward too her at all other than her love for animals . What an absolut fantastic dear pure person of whom I admire and am so thankful because without her intervention my mums dogs would of been all put down . But Ruth has shown me and helped me through this ordeal and still continues too help me week in week out . What a fantastic lady love you Ruth you ate so kind and pure too me and all the people of plymouth. God bless you forever.

Adopting from Gables is one of the best decisions I ever made! The staff are so unbelievably lovely and you can see that they really care about the animals they're looking after. My little one had been there for 18 months before we got her and her health was their number one focus. They also advise you with any behavioural difficulties and there are multiple meetings before you take your new friend home, and even when you're home they're happy to answer questions and stay in touch so you're not on your own if any issues do arise. If you're looking for a buddy I cannot recommend Gables enough! Adopt don't shop!!

Just wanted to write a massive thanks to Gables! They are such a great organisation and do so much good for the community. We have recently left our 7 month old kitty at their cattery while we went on a trip for a few weeks and the staff were amazing. It was her first stay so we checked in multiple times while away and the communication was fantastic. Definitely put us at ease knowing she was looked after so well. You can tell the staff are truly committed and have such compassion for the animals in their care <3
C. B.
I thought the process of adopting would be stressful - I couldn't have been more wrong.
If you can offer the right home it's a very easy process. Gables we're very helpful and have been supportive throughout, a special thanks to Emily for all of your kindness and support! My 2 girls are very content and loving their new life, so thank you all very much.
C. T.
We have had the pleasure of meeting these lovely people when adopting two of our family members. We adopted our first, precious boy, nearly two and a half years ago and Gables were very kind and thorough; they made sure we were the right home for our Pup and that he fit into our family as well (which he most definitely has). We were then contacted two years later to see if we were interested in adopting another boy of the same breed... he has been an absolute bundle of joy and has really fitted in well to our family of rescues! We will never 'buy' or 'purchase' a dog from anyone else. Gables 100% have the animals best interests at heart. They are fantastic at matchmaking fur babies to their forever parents! We cannot express our love for them enough... but we are planning to get married in a few years time and we will be asking that our wedding gifts will be donations to Gables! This is the least we can do for them after all they have done for us! 💕
N. P.
I am extremely grateful to Gables who have gone above and beyond with my fur baby. She is currently boarding here and they got her in quick to see their vet with an issue and contacted me to let me know.
They are all so friendly, polite and extremely knoeledgeable and you can see they all love their jobs.
I will definately be booking in again next year.

Just adopted the lovely Maisie. We cannot praise the Gables staff highly enough. They are friendly and very helpful and informative. Please, if you are considering giving a dog or cat a home, make Gables your first choice.

My cat 'Albus' boarded with gables for two weeks at the beginning of June. I was so upset and anxious about putting him in boarding, and might have cried when I dropped him off. Whenever I travel my mum looks after him (and he just about tolerates her) but mum was coming on holiday with us, so I had no choice but to find him outside care and accommodation.
I was nervous for a few reasons:
1) He's a bit of a grump, and doesn't like many people. He can get really sulky.
2) He's scared of loud noise (jumps out of his skin if I sneeze too loud)
3) He has an eye condition which means they need to be bathed daily else he develops infections.
I was mainly worried about the eye issue. I could just picture him throwing a wobbly; refusing to let them clean his eyes, refusing to eat... I was worried I would return home to a skin and bones boy with badly infected eyes.
I had no reason to worry. Infact, when I collected him his eyes were the best they had ever looked in his life. I always thought I did a good job at bathing them and keeping them clean, but when I picked him up his eyes were perfect. I even called later and asked what they used/their routine so I could keep up their good work. He had been eating all his meals whilst I was away too. I was told he was a bit grumpy and didn't want to be cuddled etc (but this is very normal behaviour for him — unless I bribe him with dreamies)
I am so thankful for the way Gables took care of my boy whilst I was away. I would have no hesitations in booking him in to stay with gables again.
I hope this reassures anyone who might be nervous about putting their cat into boarding. Especially anyone who is worried about how they will care for pets with health issues. Gables are wonderful animal carers and be assured they will care for your pet as though it were their own.
Would rate 100 stars if I could.

Thank you Gables, for not only letting the sweetest cat into my home but for all the amazing work you do for the animals in your care. Your team are always so lovely and positive and you can really tell that you all care about your animals.
Jelly came to live with me around 2.5 years ago and is the sweetest cat I've ever known, don't we all say that about our pets? She came to me wearing a collar as she was having treatment for a skin condition, I'm pleased to say she hasn't worn that collar since a week after coming to live with me. I now have a very chilled, happy cat!
In the last week Leo has joined Jelly and I. He too is sweet and loving, with the loudest purr I've ever heard.
Thank you for thinking of me when choosing a home for Leo and for all the support and guidance you've given on introducing two cats to each other. They are still trying to work out who is going to be the boss!
The work you do is amazing, thank you everyone at Gables.

Having used dog charities for over twenty years, this is the by far the best! From the staff and volunteers being so friendly; to the facilities offered and how well the animals are looked after.
S. 2.
I used to love the Gables - several of my animals have come from there and in terms of the care for the animals 5STARS - however they have changed - made it really hard to see potential dogs and cats - I was told - you apply online and they chose a cat or dog for you and invite you in and that’s the only cat or dog you can see
That’s is not right - you need to meet the dogs or cats and only you can tell which dog or cat feels right - not someone else
I do think that dog rescues make it so difficult for people because they are not that concerned about rehoming - does make me wonder ..

We have just been to collect our forever furry friends & they were very helpful happy & polite and even answered our youngest child's questions fantastic service

Just to say billion thanks to Gables for bringing adorable cat Thistle into our lives. He is the most gorgeous, affectionate, loving cat we have ever known. But Gables knew that already because he is the poster cat in their website :0) He is very well looked after and loved immensely by all of us.
I can't praise all the staff at Gables enough for the amazing selfless job they do. The world is so much of a better place thanks to them. Open your heart and home to a rescue animal and watch your life change for the better.

my sixteen year old border collie went missing on sat on a walk between chelsea meadow and saltram and was taken to gables farm .
they dont usually take in strays but realised toby was frightened and needed help ,they are totally dedicated to all animals in their care .
when i turned up at gables farm tired and worried after searching for four hours ,i found all the staff so friendly and helpful and my dog had been brought in by a kind member of the public and looked after by these wonderful people ,microchipped by them even though i had no money on me .thank you so much wonderful people at gables farm
kind regards paul

We had a dog from gables and were really surprised and very impressed on how thorough they were in both matching us to our amazing dog and assessing out suitability. Friends had a dog from a different charity with very little checking and the dog had to be returned. So we would recommend to anyone and give gables five stars.

Everyone who we had contact with was absolutely lovely. What is screamingly obvious is that the well-being of the animals they seek to re-home is of paramount importance to every single one of the staff. They're purely seeking what they believe, based upon their expertise to be in the animals best interest only. I was turned down for 2 different pairs of dogs. I stayed true to myself, I was truthful, patient and didn't give up. Suffice to say we now are the proud adoptive parents of 2 fur babies who have already filled our lives with joy and love 🥰 It is truly humbling to be trusted with these 2 much loved dogs.
N. H.
I had recently completed an application form online for a couple of dogs I was interested in on their website. Upon speaking with the staff in the rehoming team, I now understand why I was not contacted regarding these particular dogs ( as disappointed as I was). They kindly explained why I was not a match for these animals due the dogs' background, history and temperament, and ongoing care and training that they would need. I now know a lot of care, time, dedication and love goes on behind the scenes here that us members of the public are unaware of. So I just want to say thank you for being more concerned about the animals' welfare over anything else and thank you for continuously working hard to find homes for the beautiful animals in your care.
N. D.
I have been very lucky to be ‘chosen’ to adopt a beautiful little boy from Gables. This process has taken quite a bit of time due to his complex background and current needs. Throughout the process we have received the most amazing support and advice and this will continue moving forwards.
I have seen reviews from people, upset/ cross they were not chosen for the animal they would like, but Gables are not a pet shop looking to off load, they are a home, however temporary for their residents and their primary concern is finding safe, appropriate and forever homes. If you are really serious about wanting to give a home to either cat or dog and genuinely think your patience kindness and home is right, stick with them because the perfect fit will come along.
Thank you Gables, you are all amazing for what you do! And thank you for our little boy.
E. B.
I love Gables. They do great work for the animals. Adopted my last cat Millie from there but unfortunately she's now gone. Was having a look at all the lovely cats.
M. G.
I was lucky enough to find the perfect dog to join our family, he was living with the team at Gables. After lots of walks, cuddles, serious conversations and finally a home and human check (we had to be the family for him of course) we were allowed to adopt him.
Our new addition had some medical issues and required some big operations. Gables made sure he had the best veterinary treatment and then cared for him throughout his recovery both times due to the distance we live from the rescue centre.
I have had regular updates both on the phone and via photos which I have very much appreciated as I am not able to visit my boy in person.
I cant thank the team at Gables enough for all they do for the animals in their care and for the people looking to find a new additions to the family.
If you want to rescue a Dog or Cat I recommend you head to Gables Dogs & Cats Home! They can and will find just the right new addition to your family.

I would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to gables farm!
We lost our dad in October and dad came with 3 very cheeky, old dogs which he loved and forever will but one of dads wishes was that all 3 dogs her re-homed together as you can imagine was hard and even harder with covid-19 around, but we got into contact with gables farm which said they are happy to take all 3 dogs and we was over the moon! Better yet with there amazing work and wonderful connections all 3 dogs have been in there happy and forever home for nearly 2 weeks now. What amazing news just before Christmas! Ruth phoned us to let us know the amazing update and we can not be any happier.
Again thank you so much Gables farm for all your hard work and amazing dedication to what you do! And thank you to the lovely lady for welcoming our lovely 3 dogs into your loving home!
Love from Alex, Gordon and Courtney

We have just taken home our gorgeous cat from Gables Farm and can’t praise them enough. We visited on four separate occasions and on each visit the staff were super friendly and went out of their way to help us find the perfect cat. They answered any questions we had in depth and with a wealth of knowledge. We couldn’t be happier with our gorgeous girl who has settled in perfectly and has made us incredibly happy. Thanks again to the Gables Farm team for your incredible work!

I cannot thank Gables cats and Dogs home enough, a few months ago my cat went missing and a few days ago i was able to locate her here. She has had the best care I could have hoped for and the staff here were nothing but accommodating and helpful in getting her home.

Wonderful experience with Gables Farm. The staff are so lovely, Katie and Kazzie were amazing, so helpful and knowledgeable. We felt so reassured that not only do they really care about the animals, but that their professional approach accurately matches the right animals to their prospective owners. Couldn’t recommend enough :)

I visited Gables to look for a Barn cat, I had already looked on Gables website for cats that may be suitable. Having researched introducing a barn cat to it's new territory I knew the cat would have to be caged for up to a month before it could be let out . Once I found out that Gables provided the cage set up needed for the introduction period I decided to adopt two cats.
Facilities for animals at Gables are excellent. Staff are friendly and provided all the information on the cats that I needed. I visited both cats and in a few days staff came out and set up the cage system in our barn. Cages were placed beside one another, so the cats were separated, but could see one another. Each cat had 2 cages, one as a sleeping area, the other for a litter tray, food and toys. A door could be lowered between the two areas so the cat could be cleaned out with no risk of escape. After 4 weeks we opened the doors of the cages so the cats could explore their new territory. The cages were left in place for a further 2 weeks with doors open so the cats could come and go. After this 2 week period I dismantled and returned the cages to Gables.
Both cats are doing really well. The cat who I thought would be most difficult to settle and handle will come and make a big fuss of his human careers, particularly when food is being dished up. He does disappear off for a couple of days, but returns for a good sleep and a feast. The other cat is very happy about the barn and close surroundings, perhaps this has been why our rat population seems to have left the barn.
I am very pleased we were able to offer a suitable home for 2 cats that were less suited to a domestic household. Staff at Gables were helpful, knowledgeable and followed-up to see that the cats were happy in their new environment. It was lovely to be able to show the staff videos of how friendly the cats have become, particularly for the one cat I hadn't expected to want the human interaction that he now seeks out, albeit on his terms.
H. B.
We cannot praise Gables staff enough. We have just taken on one of the rescued dogs from a puppy farm that Gables rescued apparently from the most appalling conditions. We applied for this dog and were invited to meet her with the understanding that if the dog wasn’t suitable for us or we weren’t suitable for the dog then they would have to say ‘no’ this being due to the welfare of the dog and for us which we totally understood and respected. It was suggested by Gables that due to the dogs background and rescue we should visit the dog a minimum of at least four times. After travelling from Somerset to Plymouth to meet the dog for the four visits and a home visit inspection from Gables staff, we were so pleased to be told we could adopt the dog. Whilst to some people this might appear a little over the top at the end of the day the staffs main concern is for the animals they have rescued from in some cases the most unbelievable upsetting conditions.
The staff give their all for the welfare of these animals and have worked extremely hard through these exceptional difficult lockdown circumstances. So if you are told you can’t have the animal of your choice there is a good reason whether it’s the dogs background or past circumstances, at the end of the day they have the animals interest and wellbeing at heart. After all it would be very easy for Gables to move these animals on quickly to new owners as the longer they keep them the more money it costs them. This I feel proves they don’t just say “no” to you for the sake of it.
Finally, the match we had is amazing and we feel extremely lucky with our dog, although it took us a few weeks to get her we appreciated the time and effort put in by Gables staff to ensure we were well suited.

Lovely people looking after the animals. We adopted a small dog a few months ago and they take great care to ensure that they are responsibly rehoming. They did a home check and our dogs, we already had, met the adoptive dog on a number of occasions to ensure it was a good match. Gables ensured that all the dogs would get along, especially as the adoptive dog had a history of aggression (small snappy dog syndrome!). our dogs took to the adoptive dog and within a couple of weeks they were all sleeping happily in one bed together (despite them having individual beds!). They all enjoy long walks together and it's as if they've all grown up together, and dislike being without each other. We've never had an issue with the adoptive dog showing aggression, and feel he is the perfect fit for us. This wouldn't have been the case if Gables hadn't ensured they would all get along. They put a lot of work into assessing the animals when they arrive to ensure they have a full understanding of their needs. They have also phoned us a number of times since we adopted him to ensure everything was going well, and have a behaviourist they use to work with the animals if it's needed. This is a fantastic charity that does very admirable work. Well done to them!
L. S.
Our dogs boarded with Gables Farm for the 2nd time this year. The service we received was outstanding, from the administrative matters to the care our dogs received; they were returned to us happy and healthy.
We cannot thank the Gables Farm team enough, for their kindness and care; they treat every dog as if it were their own. Our dogs will be ‘holidaying’ at Gables Farm again in December and we are safe in the knowledge that they will receive the same care and attention, in our absence, as they would in our home.
J. B.
I've visited Gables Farm with a view to fostering an animal, friend in need, many times. The staff there are always helpful, knowledgeable and clearly have the best interests of all their animals at heart. You are supported every step of the way through very strict processes to ensure that each pet is well marched to their new environment in your home as perfectly as possible. I cannot speak highly enough of the whole team. Every member being totally dedicated to their cause.
M. W.
Great place and fantastic staff! It's clear that the welfare of the animals comes first, and they are all very well looked after; with plenty of enrichment, regular walking / exercise, and are provided with everything they need.
There is lots of information provided and all questions answered, and the staff are well mannered, polite and very knowledgeable.
Great charity, nice people and amazing dogs :)

Fantastic rescue center for cats and dogs. Staff are wonderful and the conditions are brilliant. We got our two kittens from Gables who are beautiful and we love them.. Now very much part of our family. Thank you Gables.. We will always support you... You are amazing x

Thank goodness they are there . My cat went "missing" some years back he was handed into them, taken well care of unfortunately he was found to have cat aids but we still had two good years with him . We still now donate to them and take along blankets ,towels ,food ,toys etc from time to time 🌟😻 xx

We have just rehomed a gorgeous rescue dog from Gables farm this weekend. We have been extremely impressed as t how well Gables is run. The dogs live in excellent conditions and the staff are the most dedicated people who care so much about the animals they are looking after. We needed to come in on a number of occasions to build up the relationship between our existing dog and our new one. Yes there is a process to be followed but this is entirely for the animal’s benefit and ensuring that they are matched well to a new home. We have received lots of information and know that we can ask for any guidance or help to ensure our dog settles in.
We highly recommend Gables Farm.

Amazing! Have a very reactive, anxious recuse dog who can’t tolerate people or dogs but they always do such an amazing job with her and have built a great relationship with her . She now wags and kisses the members of staff that she recognises. Something I never thought I would see. Absolute life savers and I can actually relax knowing she is in good hands. Thank you Gables!

I would like to place this review to thank Ruth and the rest of the team at Gables boarding for the way they took care of our two Labradors Hollie and Millie. As our Labradors are a very nervous and apprehensive pair, we cannot thank you enough for the way you all took care of them and would definitely not hesitate in recommending Gables boarding to all our family and friends to take care of their dogs and experience the excellent care that we have received.

This review is on behalf of the Putt family.
‘We have had the most wonderful experiences with Gables over the last 6 years. During that time, we have adopted 3 lovely Staffies from them - Mr Pickles, who we were lucky enough to have for 5 1/2 years; Mr T (Teddy) who we only had for a short time (due to illness and complex issues) but it was very precious.
We now have dear little Twiggy, who has some medical issues and was very neglected and underfed, but is now thriving and making tremendous progress, showing what good food and lots of TLC can achieve!
Throughout this time, and especially over the last few months, we have had the most wonderful support from Ruth, Jodie and all of the team at Gables.
Their kindness and compassion has been amazing; and the practical help and advice they have given has been invaluable.
It has been the most brilliant team work - we feel like part of the family there now. We are able to pop in or contact them at any time - nothing is too much trouble.
This means so much to all of our family.
We can never thank them enough.’
H. G.
Excellent place, cats well looked after, volunteers and staff have all been really helpful and care deeply for the animals. They couldn't have been more helpful in rehoming our two new cats. Very excited to be giving them a new home. Helpful and well thought out, well planned transfer of cats from the shelter to our home.
W. L.
The staff at Gables Farm are amazing. They are so passionate about what they do and their enthusiasm is infectious. You can see the animals are all so well cared for and if anyone is looking to give a cat or dog a new forever home I would highly recommend Gables Farm. We brought our new addition hone today and we are already completely smitten with him. You do great work guys.

Gables Farm is absolutely amazing, as is its staff and animals. I took home my cat Tessa today, and the staff helped me with every step of the way from inquiry to adoption.
The staff know their trade and are very friendly and understanding. They know how to work with people as well as animals. I have quite bad social anxiety and mental health, and the staff made me feel welcome and very much at ease.
Zero complaints, total confidence. :)

Today I went to Gables as a treat for my 20th birthday. The staff were all super lovely, welcoming and accommodating!! The cats and dogs are very clearly well looked after, I just wished I could've taken them all home; especially Sebastian the cat!! They clearly do great things here at Gables Farm, and I'd recommend everyone to visit, consider adopting, or even make a donation. Adopt don't shop, and gives Gables a try ❤️❤️ Lovely animals, lovely staff, recommend to everyone 🐱🐶

I adopted my dog from Gables and was very pleased with the process! I felt like I got to know the staff and really bond with my dog before taking him home! I think that this is very important when taking on a rescue animal. Pleasant staff and a lovely clean site. Thank you for all you do and please keep up the hard work!
H.
I cannot recommend Gables enough. The work they do and the thought they put into everything is just amazing. The staff are all so lovely and you can see they genuinely care about all the dogs and cats. I have three Gables cats and if I had room I would have more! Thank you Gables team, you are fantastic.

This is a lovely run home, the animals are well looked after, the staff very knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. We collected two cats just over three weeks ago, the paperwork/handover very thorough, and our cats have now settled well into their new home. Can’t thank them enough for our new feline friends.
V. W.
The staff on reception were friendly and keen to answer questions...unlike other Plymouth based rescue centers that I have been to.
H. T.
A big thank you to Ruth and Gables for kindly offering to visit my cat at home to clip her claws now that she is old and struggles with maintaining her claws herself and visiting the vet. Ruth made Molly feel at ease and showed such patience and kindness toward her which meant Molly did not go through the distress she did last time when she had to visit the vet. Once again, thanks Ruth for your kindness.
C. C.
What a fantastic place all the staff were very helpful.
I asked for an indoor and very friendly cat and that's exactly what I got thanks so much.
D. B.
Reception staff have very limited people/customer service skills. They are on the verge of being confrontational and are very abrupt and rude. This is based on a few interactions and phone calls not just a one off. Empathy and politeness does not come easy to them, which I find surprising considering the business they are in. More training needed. Great cat and dog home though. The response is not quoting accurate or correct information.

After a wonderful day meeting our potential new dog Big Bear. Myself and my family can't wait to come back and pay him more visits before he hopefully comes to live with us. The staff were very friendly and made the registration easy and let us see Bear the same day. The facilities are really nice and well maintained. The process of adopting a dog from Gables is firm but fair as they really do want their dogs to go to the right homes and it also shows the commitment for the potential owners to. If your looking to adopt a dog or cat, then most definitely recommend Gables Farm.
c. r.
Great rescue centre. We rehomed a dog which we picked up last weekend. They offered great advice to help us and our experience was first class. I would definitely recommend them. The profile of the dogs are very thorough so that you can make sure it's the right pet for you. All the staff were very helpful and enthusiastic. Thank you gables.

Huge thanks to Gables for reuniting me with my lost cat, they did everything possible to make sure he was looked after, from posting on social media to sending out letters to reunite us with our cat. Provided great, professional customer service and care, can't thank them enough. Definitely, recommend Gables!
T. M.
The facilities are clean and tidy they were willing to drive to the next county to do a house check, that's how dedicated to finding the right home they are! They have a trolley selling used dog coats of all sizes for £2! Great idea, there was even a brand new one worth over £15 in there. My family almost adopted a dog from here but unfortunately our circumstances changed dramatically and we had to hold off getting a dog so we unreserved the one we loved. They were very understanding and grateful we told them sooner rather than later as it increases the dogs chances of getting rehomed quicker.

We went to see a specific dog from the dogalogue. A cute dog that many people wanted but were deemed unsuitable because they had children. Initially our commitment was tested with an interview and some specific questions as to our suitability. We took the dog for 16 walks (13 of which were acconpanied) and we had 2 home visits with the behaviourist. Eventually we were able to take him unaccompanied. We were delighted when our boy came home after a number of weeks from our initial introduction. I am 100% behind the process Gables uses to ensure the dog is perfectly matched to the right family. I've always considered myself a dog person but their behavioural assessment was spot on. Gables take the time to do things properly. Those reviews that says they are too tough; they are right and doing the best by the dogs in their care. The staff are amazing. They care for the animals and genuinely love them. If you want a quick adoption no questions asked, Gables is not for you. If you want the best match for yourself and the dog, Gables is 100% for you. Pets for life not just on a whim. Thank you for helping us to find our boy xx
C. D.
We adopted a puppy called Lola from the Gables. I cannot say enough about how fantastic everybody there was. She was vaccinated and spay procedure was performed whereby she was closely monitored at all times. The staff took her home at night which socialized her tremendously. She joined us as a happy confident little girl that is full of beans. Thanks again Gables. You are all fantastic!
G. J.
I cannot thank Ruth and the Gables team enough.
They made a very stressful situation a little easier. I messed them about a bit and I am sorry but they showed understanding. I generally believe they really care for the animals. I cannot recommend them high enough. If you are considering adopting with them DO IT all the animals are so loved and I cannot imagine they would let them out of their care without being 100% ready. Thank you so much

Gables have been great finding us a dog. We've been on the waiting list a while and now finally found one! All the staff are lovely, all they want is the best for the cats and dogs in there care.can't wait to go on lots of adventures with Dorothy. See you all soon at the fundraising events! X
C. W.
Today is three weeks since Mars landed at our house - he is a beautiful black lab cross - and we can't thank Gables Farm enough for helping to bring us together. He has settled in a treat and that is down to the brilliant work put in by the staff at Gables to get him ready for his new life.
Thank you all for the wonderful work you do!
J. A.
I haven’t yet visited gables farm but fully intend on visiting, just wanted to write a little message to say thank you.
Yesterday me, my mum & 8 month old son broke down just on the corner outside and was absolutely amazed with all the help the staff gave us. From putting cones around the car and standing there, and for offering us a room to wait in and offering us refreshments. & letting us use the toilet If needed. & eventually helping move the car (when it decided to move)
They really went out of their way to help us at a stressful time. Amazing staff. Thank you so much it was really appreciated!
L.
Adopted our gorgeous cat from gables 10days ago. Was very impressed with the care given to the animals and that the staff were very careful to match people to the right pet. Also the staff were so helpful, friendly, knowledgeable.
C. S.
Don't mistake the staff for meanies who don't want you to have a dog or cat. The most important thing to them is that these animals go to the most suitable home. They really put in 100% caring for all of them and don't want all their hard work to then go to waste only to have a rescue brought back in. Everyone is so amazing and friendly at Gables and we couldn't be happier with our little Charlie.
D. E.
Visted down from South Wales and was really impressed with the facilities they have here. Lovely staff, love animals, lovely everything
S. H.
I had to go to Gables yesterday to rehome my beautiful cat Missy. It was the hardest decision ever and I was so upset. The staff were amazing though and reassured me that they would look after him and make sure he goes to a new home. They were just brilliant! X

Caring, Professional, knowledgeable staff
We have recently adopted our beautiful rescue dog Purdy, and we can't praise the staff enough for their loving and caring attitude. We were given so much help and advice which enabled our dog to settle in quickly and enjoy her forever retirement home.
Ruth Rickard deputy manager has been amazing with her dedication and love towards this beautiful dog and so generous to entrust her care to us. Ruth's TLC and devotion towards all the animals in her care is truly wonderful and we wouldn't hesitate in recommending Gables Farm Dogs' & Cats' Home to anyone searching for a new pet.
L. H.
Have just been in to have kittens which have been living in my garden re-homed. Couldn't ask for a better service. Ruth and her team really know their stuff and were most supportive both with advice and compassion. Couldn't recommend them or Gables highly enough. Thanks Ladies.
N. O.
Today we rehomed Dusty Bin who has been renamed as Pumpkin. The staff at Gables were very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend them to anyone who wants to get a cat or dog. They treat and love each animal as their own.
t.
What a team, thanks to Ruth, kazzie and all the staff and volunteers. We came home with our dog today and have had a great service. They are did centred as they should be, but looked after us and really guided us to the right dog for us. It feels so good to rescue a dog and these guys are doing great work support them if you can

Two of my dogs have come from Gables and they are my whole world. Gables has an in-depth rehoming process and do an amazing job in matching animals with potential homes. The animals In their care are loved and cared for by the staff as their own would be.
S. K.
Gables Farm is the best dog rescue center I have visited. The dogs are well cared for and loved by all the staff. We have recently re-homed a dog called Big Bear, and the process was excellent and sorted out by competent staff who work together as a brilliant team. I can't recommend Gables Farm highly enough, these guys deserve more than 5 stars for their commitment to the job and love for the animals in their care. I will definately reccommend to all my friends and family looking to rehome a dog or cat. Keep up the good work xx
P. D.
From my experience, I cannot rate the team at Gables highly enough. They are so knowledgeable, patient, kind and on hand to help with any information.I have just rehomed an older cat from them and nothing was too much trouble. Please support them in the great work they do
C. K.
It was obvious that the staff really care about the animals. They took time to get to know my dogs and calm them down during the handover. They have great standards and are very professional. I really was very impressed!
K. H.
I adopted Milly and Milo, formerly charger and caboom, last year after they had been nursed back to health by the staff of gables, especially auntie Ruth, after contracting cat flu shortly after they were born! The kittens were known as "the four fighters" and a just giving appeal went out to help with their veterinary care. If it wasn't for the love, care and commitment gables staff and volunteers put in, I wouldn't have 2 wonderful, beautiful, healthy, entertaining cats now, that are today celebrating their 1st birthdays! I cannot thank gables enough for letting me adopt them and helping make my house a home!
The care and commitment gables puts in to any animal, for whatever reason it finds itself there, cannot be faulted, it's second to none!
Thank you again ☺
R. S.
The only thing I really want to say about this extraordinary place is a massive THANK YOU!!! My partner and I went to enquire about two chocolate labradors and the girls at Gables were incredible. They explained some potential health issues to us and how they would go about dealing with them via their vetinary practice should we adopt. It was clear to me that the only concern of the staff was the wellbeing of the dogs and that itself is the only thing that matters. Since going through the adoption process and rehoming two beautiful dogs we couldn't be happier and that's all down to Gables. Rather than allowing us to rescue two potentially very sick dogs and leaving us to deal with it alone, the team at Gables have been amazingly supportive and looked after not only the dogs but my partner and I as well, giving us advice and guidance whenever we needed it. The only issue I have with Gables is that they won't let me take all the animals home! Thank you again for injecting that little ray of happiness into our lives.
H. H.
The open days are always fun, with fun dog shows, stalls and lovely cakes, defiantly recommend visiting on one. The animals are all vaccinated, neutered and vet checked to make sure their healthy and the staff care for them as if they were their own. The interests of the animals comes first, and they are matched with potential new owners to prevent them from being returned and stressed by being rehomed multiple times. The staff are always friendly and ready to help.
D. H.
Knowledgeable, friendly, supportive and 100% committed to making sure you and your new pet are matched perfectly. If you are looking to give a fur baby a home, you won't go wrong visiting these guys. Lovely people.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
E. B.
Adopted a cat from Gables and the staff were absolutely lovely and so helpful. Would recommend to anyone, pets are well looked after and they really care. Just go and visit if you are unsure at all!
D. R.
Thank you so much to Gables and all of the staff there. They are all friendly and have have the interests of the animals at heart. They are good for matching the animals appropriately considering the needs of the home and animals. Cannot recommend enough.
w. m.
In the past few weeks I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the people that work at gables especially Ruth under not pleasant circumstances and I must say the work that these guys do is above and beyond the call of duty some even opening up their own homes and they just love the pets they have in their care but yet these people are our unsung heroes who take in pets who are unwanted gifts that people don’t want anymore
Any support these guys can get will be truly helpful and accepted with the dignity and respect they give our furry friends
Please help these guys care for the furry ones
R. P.
Fantastic help and support after losing our 17yr old cat and finding a new furry family member! Thank-you Gables!

Well I can't praise gable farm enough, it's was so clean and tidy.
All the staff were so kind, friendly and very helpful, and couldnt do enough to help us find a suitable four legged friend to join our family.
Thank you for looking after me and my family Mo (dele) x
r. w.
Love the cleanliness and facilities at this place. Was looking to see if my children could help out but modern insurances wont allow it until they are 18. Not the fault of the home. Though it seems like an opportunity missed.
R. S.
Brilliant home for unwanted pets. Caring staff. Good vetting to make sure your chosen pet is the right fit for you and more importantly right for your chosen pet.
S. B.
A spotless environment. With dedicated staff.Ruth and her team do a fantastic job.Looking after all the animals. We fell in .ove with our latest adoption,(we already have 1rescue from Gables)girl Grace she is a weinerarner! Such lovely, friendly staff who all work so hard to find the cats and dogs their forever home. Wonderful experience from start to finish, we are so happy to have adopted a kitten from them.

Everyone in the world thinks that they have the best dog. Everyone is right!
Just over a year ago, I took home the World’s Loveliest Dog.
I looked online for rescue homes and happened upon Gables Farm.
Their well written web page appealed to me and I perused their Dogalogue, then phoned them to see if they had any Lovely Dogs suitable for us.
“Come and visit us” they said. So I did!
I had set my heart of a rather good looking fellow called J Roc but after initial discussion, the staff felt that he would be too young and lively for my old dog, Sacha. .
A moment of disappointment (I don’t take NO very well) and a frantic scan of the Dogalogue, a voice called from the back of the reception
“What about Woody?”
Ruth Rickard, the Deputy Manager came over and proceeded to demonstrate her phenomenal knowledge of each dog in her care, discussing their attributes, personalities and needs, asking all the right questions before pronouncing
“Yep... Woody. I thought so! Would you like to meet him?”
I DID want to meet him and so was accompanied down to the pens, each filled with a barking, or sleeping, or waiting Lovely Dog, and the empty pens of those who had been taken out to the beautiful woodland surroundings for a walk and had left their aura (and blanket) there.
Woody was one of the barking ones. Slobbering, jumping up at the pen door, muddy and loud…. was this the Lovely Dog I had been expecting?
That first meeting was an education to me. Every inch of my face was washed by the biggest and busiest Dog tongue that I had ever seen. Every part of my clothing was equally spread with mud and dog slobber. Indeed, a Lovely Dog!
We had our First Walk, accompanied by competent staff. Then the all-important first dog mix with Sacha. Ruth herself supervised this and, after a dodgy start, Sacha and Woody had a sniff and a greeting, still on lead. The following week, another walk, still both dogs on the lead, and my youngest two children, now older teenagers, also present to meet Woody. It was love at first sight!
After three weeks, many visits, treats, walks and interviews (so wonderfully thorough that I felt I had had a full personality examination without the benefit of anaesthesia), I took home the World’s Loveliest Dog.
Because of the extensive and well-orchestrated adoption process, Woody settled right in. He and Sacha curled up together, walked and played together and even shared toys as if they had known each other for a lifetime. Woody invaded my daughter’s bedroom, cuddling up and joining in whatever activity was current in that mysterious teenage space. To hear her laugh as Woody provided necessary distraction from exams and college stress was a relief to me.
Whoever visited, Woody was right there to greet them, sitting, bringing a toy, welcoming in my elderly mother, visiting dogs, religious callers and my three boisterous sons with equal but appropriate enthusiasm. Woody has his own Facebook page where all his friends can check on his progress and read about his day. You can add him (Woody Woodstock). All his pictures and fun are there to share.
Sacha sadly passed away a few months ago. Woody was right there to comfort and cheer us, to encourage me to walk out and laugh again. His comical ways and canine clowning helped to come to terms with an unfillable gap. Woody became an only dog.
Now the time has come to seek out another dog as a companion for Woody. He is very excited because, next Sunday, he is going to Gables Farm to meet a dog called Bear.
Who knows whether Bear will turn out to be suitable for our family? I don’t but I can tell you who does know …. the wonderful people at Gables Farm.
And I can tell you something else. Whichever dog Gables Farm helps us to adopt will turn out to be the World’s Loveliest Dog!
They know what they are doing.
Pay them a visit, check out their website. Whether you have a dog, want a dog or want to help a dog, there is always something you can do to get involved. And do put up with the thorough adoption process. You DO want the World’s Loveliest Dog, don’t you?
C. G.
The staff were friendly and happy to answer any of our questions. The cats and dogs we saw were all well cared for and their profile sheets gave us all the info we needed on each animal.
s. c.
Fabulous rescue, can highly recommend. Staff are super friendly and helpful. On site shop has everything you need at very reasonable prices. If you are looking for a cat or dog try Gables first.
S. G.
My visit was nothing to do with a dog. I already have two. My car had a water leak and overheated. I stopped up the hill from them. Walked in and asked if I could have a container of water. They gave it to me, and a lift back to my car with the container... Wow. Thank you. An indicator of the ethics and culture there. 😁😁😁
C. B.
Always very helpful and they are dedicated to the animals in their care. We currently have 2 of their cats and have previously had a couple of older cats. Great service and lovely people.

Very long story but during lockdown my Female dog accidentally got caught in heat despite a lot of effort to try and not let it happen and after trying to have the pregnancy terminated but would of been to much of a risk for my dog, she had 6 little puppies, I did not want to sell them or give them away myself,so asked Gables for help with putting them up for adoption, After speaking to them we agreed that the puppies and mum would go to them at 3 weeks old until they where ready to leave their mum and then I would have mum back. I recieved regular updates and photos and responses to all my messages and trust me I messaged a lot, they even got her spayed for me, She came home today and can tell she has been well looked after, all I can say is they have been amazing during the whole process and thankyou to Ruth and all the staff that has helped look after Cookie and her puppies.

Today we picked up our Fur Babies (Bella and Bertie) to start their new life in their forever home.. They are so gorgeous, beautiful, friendly and affectionate.. Its a fab place, so kind and caring and doing a great job, with whatever resources available.. Keep up the good work, and Thank you so much..

M. S.
Thank you Gables for our gorgeous Archie (Facebook). We love him to bits and he is starting to love us too.You all do such an amazing job out there.I was so impressed with the organisation of the farm and the dogs were all well cared for and seemed happy.Archie came to us with a portfolio and the home checks and review were robust.I would recommend Gables to anyone who wanted to adopt a pet
M. W.
Gables do a good services, but I think they go iverboard on restrictions, my friend Mark told them from the beginning that him and his wife were planning on children at some point, they let him take the dog out, build a bond and then told him no because of wanting children... So dumb!
K. R.
I have rehomed many animals over the years but have never received or seen such professional care. The staff really love their animals and are there for all my questions and concerns. Well done GABLES
