We've been working with James since before we adopted our 2 year old cross Cosmo. He came to us with reactivity towards people and dogs. We got in touch with James to find how best to introduce Cosmo into our home. Since then we have been working with him on Cosmo's reactivity issues.
Four months on and we can now walk Cosmo past most people within 2 meters with little to no reaction. When we first adopted we couldn't be within eyesight of another person. We still have a long way to go but I'm sure we'll get him there.
James has been amazing throughout the whole process. He's helped us learn how to manage Cosmo and show him how to behave when something stresses him out. I would whole heartedly recommend getting in touch asap if you have issues or are thinking of adopting for the first time. Odds are you'll learn just as much as your pup will.

If you are having any issues with your dog, don’t wait, give James a call. We only wish we had found him months earlier! We’d literally got to the end of our tethers with our Romanian rescue (also called Charlie!), he had become increasingly aggressive (barking, snarling, lunging) at just about anything that moved – people, children, cars and dogs. So much so we’d not been able to take him anywhere where there were any of the above, for literally months! We were also not able to leave him in the house on his own as he would destroy stuff and don’t even mention the postman!
From the first phone consultation, I knew James was different, everyone else had told us to keep him calm and avoid triggers, James was telling us to meet him at a really busy park that was going to be full of dogs, children and people! After his initial meeting with Charlie (where we were very grateful Charlie had his muzzle on!) James quickly summed him (and us!) up.
During our very first session with James, Charlie went from the above description to one that could walk round the park, past dogs, screaming children and gangs of adults without even turning a hair. There were still some dogs that he reacted to but we were able to nip it in the bud without it becoming a major incident.
The very next day I was able to leave Charlie in the house by himself and following homework, he has become less reactive to passers by and cars and is much calmer all round.
James is massively insightful, very knowledgeable, a great teacher, very kind (to both the dog and their humans!) and does some brilliant dog impressions - a true dog whisperer if ever there was one!

We got in touch with James after a google and reading the positive reviews. It was truly the best thing we ever did for our dog Ollie, and for us. We had tried 2 trainers previously, but were still in a difficult place with Ollie who was very reactive on the lead to other dogs. James met us for a 3 hour session and instantly could provide us with incredible knowledge on why Ollie was reactive and what we can do to let him know that is not what we want him to do when he sees other dogs. Since that one session, Ollie has come a long way.
We avoided walking on popular dog walking routes and would get up at the crack of dawn to avoid other dogs, but now we are able to walk Ollie confident in our knowledge of how to firstly prevent Ollie reacting and secondly how to respond when he does. We cannot recommend James enough, he has improved our relationship with our dog and understanding that actually he is a confident teenage boy rather than the anxious and scared dog we thought we had! Thank you James!

Such a lovely experience for me and my girls. James is open, warm, patient and personable. He has a lovely way with dogs - my girls loved him and I got so much out of it too. I would highly recommend.

I can not recommend James enough, he has changed the relationship between myself and my gorgeous dog Floyd in such a positive manner. I dreaded walking him even though I did, he would react to dogs in a negative way and one incident lead to my poor dog walker (she walks him once a week) to be verbally abused because of Floyd’s reactions. Since meeting up with James I have learnt that Floyd isn’t an aggressive dog he just enjoys his own space and doesn’t like full on dogs, young puppies etc. I have been to various dog trainers costing a lot of money and actually been asked to leave because my dog wasn’t behaving properly, I’ve had one session with James and it’s changed my whole experience. Floyd and I are still learning, but we’ve been given the relevant tools and it’s still a learning curve but my confidence has increased which means I have more control and our walks are so much better. Please don’t waste your money on Dog Trainers like I did because our issues could been identified so much quicker and cheaper. James has taught me so much in our two hour session, I have actually been able to pass this on to other friends who have dogs.
An invaluable lesson and worth every penny.

Cassie is a rescue from Romania, she’d been with us for 7 months and probably had no socialisation with people. Initially she was that terrified she wouldn’t leave her crate, but after a couple of months began barking at adults and children on walks, chasing runners, cyclists and anything that moved; I was getting more anxious with every walk. She also began barking at my partner in our home each time he entered the room.
James was recommended by a fellow dog walker.
We booked a three hour session, James immediately picked up on Cassie’s issues (fear/aggression) and we got to work! His analysis of Cassie, and our behaviour toward her, was very insightful and gave us a huge amount of information to work with.
After gaining Cassie’s trust he showed us how to walk with her and communicate via the training leash (which was very kindly gifted to us from James as part of the session). He showed us how to calm Cassie and how to read her level of excitement. We practised walking on the beach with her off a leash (something we could never do for fear of her running off) which was incredible after just an hour or so.
James was very patient and diplomatic, his understanding of dogs is fascinating and gave us a completely different perspective on Cassie, and how best to help her. What we felt important was his tailoring of the session and the activities to suit Cassie’s specific issues, not just cookie cutter exercises that you might find at a dog training class.
After the session James sent an incredibly detailed run down for us to reference when needed. He has been very helpful via e-mail and has also been able to help us with Cassie's fear of the dark and car travel problems.
Cassie's issues with barking outside and in the home were greatly reduced as James exercises with building Cassie's confidence began to work. We don’t feel at a total loss now when we run into her behavioural problems, we feel we have a selection of methods to guide her and build her confidence. We now highly recommend James to our dog walking friends.

Visited James once with my dog Ruby who refused to go on walks, he spent a couple of hours with us walking her on a figure of eight lead. We went home and bought one and now we walk multiple times a day without her refusing to go, she’s happy, stopped pulling, has a wiggle in her walk and her tail never stops wagging. I can’t praise and thank him enough but not just for getting Ruby enjoying walks but for all the other advice he gives if you message him and ask.
Many thanks James, I would recommend you to anyone who was going through the same problems.

Really brilliant session with James helping us with our 5 month old Labrador puppy, Barney. His calm manner and clear explanations mean it’s easy to put things into practice. Lead walking is now a pleasure for all of us. James has been with us from the start when we had some early issues following getting a puppy during lockdown. His advice saved our sanity!
We will definitely return for more training as we move through the challenging teenage phase!
Highly recommend and Barney is also a fan. Thank you James.

We've been working with James now for a few month, both face to face sessions and telephone support and can't recommend The Dogs Way enough! Not only have we worked on practical steps to deal with issues we've had, we have also gained a wealth of knowledge to understand our dogs behaviours and how we as owners impact upon them too. We have definately seen a huge improvement and feel confident that we can over come the issues we have leading to happier dogs and happier humans! We cannot thank James enough, he's knowledgeable, explains things in an easy to understand way and is very clearly passionate about doing what's best for our dogs! We look forward to continuing our work and progress!

We were having behavioural issues with our 8 month old puppy, he had become very reactive towards other dogs and his behaviour was very unpredictable. I started trying to avoid busy areas when taking him out, and even started walking in the opposite direction if I saw dogs heading towards us just to avoid the situation that I knew would erupt.
I booked the two hour S.O.S session with James and it was worth every penny. He was really knowledgable and didn’t take long to pick up on the reasons behind Lemmy’s behaviour. We have taken away the advice James gave us, and started putting things into practice, and within less than a week I am already noticing very small differences in Lemmy’s behaviour. We still have a long way to go but I feel confident that if we remain consistent and persistent then we will definitely get there.

Very knowledgeable and had an instant rapport with our dogs. Their behaviour, and how we interact with them has improved as a result. We were almost ready to give up with one of our dogs, but things are so much better now

Truly remarkable results in such a short space of time! James is a miracle worker and I cannot recommend him highly enough. Thank you for all your help.

I can't recommend James enough!
I have had dogs for 40 years, all of them rescues and as anyone who has done that will know each one comes with their own issues...( So I mostly know what I'm doing 😉)
Well this time I knew I needed some help and saw James website, I liked what he had to say and called, he was extremely helpful on the phone and we booked a 2 hour appointment.
Jessie is a rescue that came to us just 5 weeks ago ( still a puppy at not quite 1yr old) her previous owners couldn't cope with her as she was extremely unsocialized, fearful and anxious of everything which makes her appear aggressive, she couldn't walk past another person or dog at the beginning of our session without throwing herself around barking and crying to the point that we worried she would hurt herself.
James was a godsend! His calm and caring attitude towards Jessie ( and ourselves) has helped us emmensly, by the end of our walk she was much calmer ( not cured yet but calm enough now for us to be able to continue her training)
Considering I have fostered numerous dogs (most ex puppy farm breeders )and every one of our own dogs have had issues I found it hard to ask for help but I am so pleased I did.
If you are debating whether to call then please don't hesitate, he is worth every penny and more.
Thank you James

As a retired vet, I felt I should know how to deal with my puppy who was constantly snapping, biting and chewing me but I couldn't resolve it. James was extremely helpful and gave me some valuable information and advice. I can recommend him to anyone who wants a well behaved dog.

James (and The Dogs Way) work miracles! I rehomed my 11 month old Working Cocker Spaniel 2 months ago and it soon became apparent she really struggled with separation anxiety to the point which I couldn’t leave the room for a matter of seconds without her crying and clawing at the door. At a loss for how to resolve this I gave James a call and after the initial phone consultation I had all the confidence in the world if anyone was going to help Cally it would be James. We had a home visit the following week and I was amazed at how quickly Cally took to what James was teaching us. Fast forward to not even 2 weeks since the home visit and I’ve just been able to leave Cally for an hour and a half with absolutely no whimpering, crying, scratching! It genuinely feels like we have a different dog! I couldn’t recommend James and The Dogs Way enough!

Cannot recommend highly enough! James is a lovely person and a true dog lover who genuinely wants to help dogs (and their owners). He explains everything so well and gives you invaluable insight. Patient, understanding and honest. I’m so glad that I found James and chose to contact him when I needed help. He helps you help your dog, providing you with lifelong skills in a very short time. I believe he has something innate that you can’t teach. A huge thank you from Saami too!

Can not recommend James highly enough! We went to see James as Loki was pulling and reacting whilst walking on lead, other trainers had not been helpful at all and in fact had made Loki’s reactivity worse. James straight away recognised the issue and provided us with a straightforward and quick correct to the issue. He helped us really understand Loki’s problem and taught us how to firstly prevent it and then secondly how to deal with it correctly to show we weren’t happy with how he was reacting! James and Charlie have changed our lives and I would never ever go to another trainer ever again!

It’s been over two weeks since my session with James and I can now see a dramatic difference in my dog’s behaviour. I had initially contacted James as I realised that I was walking both my dogs in quiet places to avoid possible confrontations. I had perceived that my dog Billy was anxious after an attack by another dog as he would stalk and charge at some dogs. I was constantly on guard for possible problems and not enjoying walks as much as I should have been.
The 3 hour session was invaluable and very enjoyable. James helped me understand my dog and provided insightful recommendations and suggestions. I now have much more confidence in managing situations as I am learning to understand Billy and I no longer avoid meeting other dogs.
James has a really lovely calm, patient and informative approach and an amazing, comprehensive understanding of dog behaviour. I would highly recommend his service.

Willow
James is a true dog (and owner) whisperer! Willow our 3 year old springerdor was getting so anxious and excited that she was struggling with walking on the lead and being near any other dogs without showing aggression, within a few hours James had assessed Willow (and us) and was able to help us transform what we were ALL doing that was creating this negative situation. With a few simple changes, plenty of practice and a growing confidence, walking Willow is now a totally different experience. she’s become far more relaxed, content and a joy to walk again. Can’t thank you enough James! We fully recommend you and your abilities to anyone seeking help with their dogs (and their own contributing) behaviour!

Can't recommend James highly enough, one visit and we have a different dog! He took 5-10 mins to assess Koda, then gave us simple, easy to follow methods to correct his behaviour. He offered us insights into dog psychology that made so much sense but we just hadn't realised, and gave us techniques tailored to our specific type of dog. We're extremely pleased, James was worth every penny and we'll definitely be booking more sessions!

Shadow.
Shadow is a 4 year old rescue collie /lab cross . Right from the off I sensed something wasn’t right, and anxious as a new dog parent called in reinforcements to prevent developing challenging behaviour, aware that I was not going to give up on her. (As she had been rejected before by 2 families).
She deserved so much more and in recruiting James , Shadow and I have quickly moved beyond those initial wobbles and anxieties (mostly mine). I was guilty of projecting my anxieties around her being a rescue onto her, and fundamentally misreading the situation and thus mishandling the solution, creating deeper issues and problems.
James’s professional , intuitive , pragmatic and clear guidance allowed me to fully appreciate, “see” and “hear” Shadow and in doing so allowed a quicker, more solid , less emotional and trusting relationship to blossom .
His non- nonsense and gentle delivery supported and enhanced a purer and more joyful cultivation of my relationship with Shadow.
He is dog-centric while being mindful of the “noise” that we as humans can bring and is clear in ensuring that the dog is not subjected to the smorgasbord of our daily thoughts and experiences, but rather forges and cultivates a “living in the now” experience with the dog. I have experienced this, and with his guidance Shadow and I are learning to trust, listen and are learning to enjoy wonderful experiences. I am now developing a relationship with Shadow , which my whole life I has looked for and hoped to have with a dog. This is in no small part to James.
He responded quickly, thoroughly and thoughtfully and I would highly and fully recommended his natural ability and skill to anyone having issues with their dog.
There are very few genuine people that you meet such as James and should your dog (and you), need any support, you would be well placed to receive excellent and authentic support were you to ask for his guidance.

I contacted James when my Ridgeback would not eat although the vets had examined him and done an ultra sound and told me he was perfectly fit and well. The vets suggested it could be a behavioural problem.
Benson had lost 2 kilo at this stage.
James confidently assured me that with his help and advice Benson WOULD eat.
His professionalism gave me the confidence to follow his advice even though I was extremely stressed.
James contacted me for daily reports and encouraged me all the time
By day 4 Benson was eating and has never looked back.
I would like to recommend James for his knowledge and understanding of the dogs mind.

We adopted a rescue dog mid December and soon realised that he had a few problems. We contacted the dogs way for help.
We have since had two training sessions and are amazed at how far we and our dog have come in this time.
We are going to continue to use the dogs way to help us and our dog in the future.
We would recommend the dogs way to anyone looking to get help with their dog with anything.

As a dyed in the wool cynic I was blown away by how much James achieved in a short space of time. Absolutely remarkable!
