Reviews of Number 10 London
N. K.
Combining a bar and restaurant on the front and a cute little cinema on the back this is a really cool space. Rumour also has it that it's owned by one of the founders of Secret Cinema. Movie tickets are great value and the gentle rumblings of the trains passing above only adds to the atmosphere.

Very quirky interesting place. I came here for an event and found it quite a cool place with a little bar, selling vinyls and cinema part. I think I'd come back here if there is another event I'm interested in. Also so close to London Fields station.

Nice food and atmosphere. The music was a bit loud during the dinner but definitely good tunes !
P. P.
Wonderful little cinema tucked away in Hackney. Only £6 a ticket too!!

Great quirky place to watch a movie. Prices start from £6 for "airline" seats which are exactly as described. You can push the arm rest up which means you can still get cosy with your partner. You can take in your drink from the bar and no need to pour it into a plastic. Sound quality excellent. Big screen. The dining is also fantastic so you should definitely stop for dinner. We sampled the vegan tapas and it was all delicious. Very friendly staff too!

I absolutely love this unique little cinema and the films they show are just great, I've been many times and find the odd rumble of the overhead trains very comforting. I have recommended it to many people. However, the last few times I have been, I have found it way too noisy with thumping music in the background coming from the bar which ruined the whole ambience of a cinema experience. Is it really necessary to play such loud music on a Sunday afternoon? If this can be rectified there is no doubt that this place would get 5 stars from me because it really is a gem

The Institute of Light is a chill, stylish one-screen cinema, showing critically acclaimed recent releases at an amazing price point. I'd suggest incorporating showings of older films or classics a bit more often, as there are only two nightly showings.
The kitchen residencies seem like a great idea, and I'm looking forward to them, although there wasn't any in house cooking at the moment so couldn't try anything. But the bar is good and cozy. The outdoor seating is probably great in the summer.
All that being said, a real popcorn machine is desperately needed. Bagged popcorn doesn't cut it.

Love this place!
the Record Store is the main reason I go there, with a great and fine selection of vinyls and with some special dj set happening sometimes.
The ship keepers are helpful and have a big knowledge of fine music.
I don't give 5* because something that could really improve the location: the bar.
Although the staff is really friendly, I think that the standards could be higher.

Cost £6 to watch a film which is an excellent price. The reason being I'd imagine is that you do get rumbles of trains from above and some noise from the bar during the film but not enough to ruin the film. The seats in the cinema itself are airplane seats and pretty comfortable. Would go back!
L. J.
I live next door so I starting going to Institute of lights from their first weeks :) Love the cinema (if you spoiled it's not your place I am afraid :) price just £6 and no any booking fees!
Love the fact that they keep changing chefs and types of cuisines so we come back again and again. We have some lovely places to eat around but if they have the same menu for 5 years you stop going.
Can't wait to try Billy smokes later this week :)
a little tip: tables could be cleaned more often ;)

What a lovely little intimate venue. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience provided by the Institute of Light, a very comfortable little cinema. They had a few technical issues at the start, but managed to resolve them without any major delays, so they are competent as well.
C. B.
I have been there a couple of time now and I can really say that the food is impecable, made in true Italian style, to share, and promptly serve.
The cinema also has very interesting film going on (French New-Wave, Music Documentary alongside the latest release and for £6 what is not to love). Eventually the staff was just plain nice, up for a chat, discussing idea and carrying for the community.
I love the Institute of Light as it is not trying to be something it is not. It is a great place for a glass and a chat and a independent hubb for culture (yep it doubles up as a bookshop and a record shop)
Loving it, cheers.

A very cool venue.
This place just oozes style with it's modern layout, books and records on the shelves, unisex toilet, an auditorium where half the seating are sofas and now and then, the sound of a train rolling over the venue.
I'm still not sure how I feel about the sounds from the trains as it added to my experience of the IOL but kind of ruined the film I was watching a little.

I was so surprised at this quaint little bar and cinema that you would walk by without realising it was there. Themed like being inside of an airplane it's quite charming and I was in awe at the cinema tucked away behind the cafe and bar.
I attended a movie screening there but to know that they show classic and latest films for a more than reasonable £7 will definitely bring me there again. If not just for another cheese and tomato toastie. By far the best I've had somewhere where you needed a bit of sustenance to keep you going.
The cinema might be a bit noisy at times, sadly there are live railway tracks above it but that doesn't detract from a super cool spot in Hackney!
M. R.
As an alternative cinema and restaurant, it is all excellent! I went to watch the movie '' Icaros: A Vision '' and enjoyed the movie, the staff, the customers, the place. The price range for the food is quite reasonable and next time I may try something. ;-)
P. A.
Recent addition to the area, hybrid space offering a restaurant/bar, cinema and vinyl record store. This review is for restaurant, which has been great (have visited 3 times). Interesting flavours, but service can be hit or miss.
M. G.
Amazing place for records lovers. Records are cheap and you can find super London gems old and new. Their DJs are fantastic! Ask to listen to any records, have a chat with them and enjoy the vibe. And then, have a drink at their bar.
M. D.
I'd say this is more or a movie theater and a bar, than a cultural center, but you do you bb. Drinks are decently priced, but bring an extra layer for the movies in the winter. Also, one of the walls is a metal door, so noises
L. H.
Lovely atmosphere, all good comfy seats in the cinema, great price. Didn't have any food but sounded lush (no vegan options though from what i could see?)
M. A.
Had a lovely Chinese New Year meal here. It was really nice. The only downside was that the goodie bag at the end contained coconut chips with honey. Since this was a vegan event, they should have checked that.
A. T.
Absolutely amazing spot. Excellent staff, great drinks and great relaxing atmosphere. Didn't get to try the food or even go to the cinema but really had a great time regardless.
B.
Absolute gem in Hackney, £6 to see a film any day of the week is decent. Great bar and kitchen and music is always spot on. BBE Records pop-up store is amazing too.
L. F.
Local indy cinema with great bar and friendly staff. Given the quality of current Hollywood productions, watching a classic movie here is quite refreshing. The theater is a bit chilly, though.
M. T.
Went to pitch black playback here. Food and bar is expensive but the drinks are very much worth it.
J. W.
Really interesting space, and really well priced. Not sure I'd watch a new release film here again as I didn't particularly think the image or sound system quality was amazing (saw Phantom Thread), but it is fun and has a great bar.
J. G.
The two-seater sofas are a bit firm and low-backed, but honestly this is a great venue. Casual, nice bar up front, cheap ticket prices. We'll definitely be back.
M. V.
Incredible bbq food although portions are relatively small for most dishes. Make sure you ask for the secret menu!
The burger and the pastel are really impressive.
M. J.
Great venue for sunny days and nights, small food stall and sufficiently stocked bar. Didn't see the cinema part but overall impression was good
K. M.
Great beer on tap, excellent tunes on a Saturday, good size screen (with comfy seats) - Zoe's Ghanaian Kitchen popup has superb food.
H. S.
Their okonomiyaki is the best dish I’ve eaten in recent memory. Great service, reasonable prices, and utterly delicious! Very highly recommended.
S. B.
Just a different place, must see if you are in the area. Can't compare it to anything else, just too original. Food is amazing, great vibes; been there twice so far, will definitely go back.
S.
My favourite place in London Fields for Disco Funk, Japanese Food and Tasty Cocktails. Great staff and awesome record shop by day, spicy club at night
B. T.
It was first time I tried blindfold music experience, to be honest i wouldnt try again, i can do it with my eyes close and earplugs, but the japanese chef is the best, loved the food
N. T.
Lovely place with good facilities (the screen anf sound system both very good).
Allow plenty of time to get served at the bar if you want a drink- so slow...
D. D.
The BBQ is a bit too tasty, the beers on tap a bit too interesting, the film programming a bit to good. Luckily, I haven't visited their record shop, or I would surely be doomed.
D. B.
Superb place, to eat, drink and watch a movie! The movies, are mostly just out in the cinema, but at a lower price, then most cinemas. Love the place.
I. M.
I love this place. Cinema is the best. I highly recommend it. Tickets price are good for London prices. I love the plane seats and sofas are cool as well.
A. P.
Great cinema with couches in the screening room, and a bar with food in the foyer. Films a bit pricey but well worth the lounge experience.
A. C.
Very nice food and atmosphere! Portions are a bit small though. Check out their tiny cinema on the back!
M. L. B.
Very cool place! We went to a Pitchblack Playback session and it was very nice. Very nice Japanese food and drinks are great too!
B. K.
Come for the drinks, not the movie. The railway is right on top of you and the sound of passing trains and loud music from the bar make for a less than ideal movie watching experience.
D. W.
Slow service but decent cocktails and nice general environment. Decent sized cinema in the back and reasonable food on offer too.
w. s.
Cool record shop and cinema in the coolest part of Hackney, lovely décor, well priced records, the bar is good too, all very trendy as is the norm around these parts
m. l.
Great atmosphere, low cost cinema and brilliant bar & kitchen, with record store... Complete evening/afternoon combo!!
I.
Excellent japanese small plates, and home of Pitch Black Ply Back which is honestly a tonic for the mind after a long hard day of looking at various screens.
M. N.
Lovely place, great atmosphere and very helpful staff. The food is very good. I nice place to chill out and enjoy good music.
H. P.
Querky venue with small independent cinema. (Descent screen size). Definitely somewhere to try if you want to get away from the beaten track.
H. J.
Really cool place. Even liked the sound of trains passing above you as you watched a movie - definitely check it out.
T. C.
Perfect atmosphere and food. A hidden gem.
E. H.
A very unique place. An independent cinema with a very local feel. I had a great experience there
R. F.
Well priced cosy cinema situated in old railway arches. The sound of passing trains only adds to the experience.
J. H.
Funky and uber cool, with one of the best private screening cinema spaces in London. A hidden gem that needs no polishing.
R. W.
great bar and lovely staff and if you're lucky a cinema too
P. M.
