Reviews of Crowne Plaza Plymouth, an IHG Hotel
This is a very good hotel, ideal if your staying overnight having seen a show at either theatre Royal or pavilions. This is because both venues are in walking distance. Also in walking distance of railway station
Very efficient and thoughtful staff. Rooms are good but bathroom seems small. Breakfast on the top floor is self serve but good, wide range of foods. Amazing views over Plymouth sound! Would recommend hotel.
Great hotel, beautiful breakfast and brilliant staff. I forgot to ask for the sofabed to be made up and at 10pm, someone came and did just that.
Good shower, nice to see quite environmentally friendly toiletries.
Despite the quite noisy airconditioning, the bed was comfortable and i slept well.
Wonderful location too - close to the Smeaton's Tower, city centre and Plymouth University.
The view from the breakfast room at the top of the hotel is breathtaking!!!
Nice hotel, comfortable beds, attentive staff and very good breakfast with a lot more choice than most hotels. All staff are still wearing masks, which to me is very reassuring. The only reason it is not 5 stars, the car park in the basement is not fit for purpose. I have an estate car. Extremely difficult to manoeuvre around a car park designed for the old mini. Watch out for the high kerbs around the car park, my car grounded on one and damaged the sill. Very annoying.
Very impressed with the Crowne Plaza. Didn't have big expectations - city centre hotel but I was pleasantly surprised. Service at reception was polite and efficient. A good mix of clientele. All areas clean and well staffed. Even the chamber maid was beyond courteous. I would visit again without hesitation. Beautiful decor and nothing looked out of place.
My wife and I have just returned from a four night stay. The room was spacious and comfortable and had been cleaned really well beforehand and then every day. The position of the hotel is superb for the Hoe, Barbican and town centre. Breakfast was superb as always at Crowne Plaza - so much variety. Car park is tight but is fine if you’re careful and don’t own as massive SUV. However one of the best aspects of staying here are the staff team - they are a credit to the management - friendly, attentive and always available to help. A special mention to the breakfast team! So good! Thanks guys - we will be back.
Really enjoyable stay. Ideal location for Christmas shopping expedition and The Hoe. Food was really good, very clean room. The only downside in the room we stayed in was very narrow exit out of the bath/shower. Screen too close to the …
Enjoyed my stay, staff were excellent. Location is perfect for the city centre, Barbican and Hoe. Plenty of parking. View from restaurant is amazing. Stayed at hotel as we were going to the theatre which again was within walking distance.
We have stayed here many times including our honeymoon nearly 50 years ago. We like Plymouth a lot and the hotel is ideally suited for walking around Plymouth and particularly the Hoe. The room had a great view of the Sea and was particularly spacious. A small point was that the television was small for today's standards. However the provision of SKY channels and Sports channels was a nice surprise. Unlike other reviewers we had no problem with car park as when we arrived there was plenty of room. We arrived too early for the room to be ready which we expected. Our case was left in the lock up and we went for a walk and brunch luckily in glorious sunshine which reinforced our delight of being in Plymouth again. A special mention must be made Tui who looked after us in the Club Lounge. I realise she is Marco Pierre staff rather the hotel staff but she looked after us to the standard I would expect from a Crowne Plaza. All in all a very pleasant stay with, rather annoyingly, nothing to complain about.
Hotel Rooms were clean and comfortable. Bath Room small but manageable to use with some careful movement. Door to bathroom opened next to bath shower screen, this was quite tight. Breakfast was at a good standard and had a very wide range …
Unfortunately, there was no hot water, which as it was my partners birthday and we were booked in for dinner in the hotel restaurant, it was most disapointing.
The hot water had not been restored by the morning, resulting in a very cool shower before we checked out.
The meal was excellent, as was the service and the staff were very polite.
The bed was large, but it had been assembled incorrectly, as instead of two pieces of the bed being joined longwise, they were joined across, so you could feel a ridge in your back when you lay there or when you slept, which was not comfortable.
The room had excellent views and the use of the very nice lounge was most appreciated.
The hotel overall was excellent. Really nice quality, large comfortable rooms and very friendly staff.
The value was great too. Because we stayed out of season we paid about the same as a cheaper hotel.
The bed was huge and comfortable, although I did have a terrible night's sleep, this was more due to the fact that generally I am a very poor sleeper, rather than any fault of the hotel.
The only negative was that rhee was a bit of noise from upstairs when people were dragging furniture around, but that eventually quietened down.
The professionalism, friendliness, cleanliness, level of service, views and food are truly unbeatable. A true holiday abroad in the UK. The staff could not have been more accommodating if they had tried. Spent 5 nights on holiday alone whilst house and job hunting, everyone was exceptionally knowledgeable, took time to talk to me and make me feel very welcomed. Truly feel blessed to have stayed in not just a beautiful place but a place with beautiful people.
Really enjoyed our stay. Comfortable bed, lovely rooms. Breakfast was tasty with an excellent view! No trouble with car parking. Friendly and helpful staff. We will definitely be back!
I was initially put off by the exterior in the online photos when looking for somewhere to stay, however this hotel and it’s staff are amazing, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed and made to feel valued. …
Had a weeks stay from the 4th to 11th September.
Lovely hotel and great base for visiting Devon and Cornwall.
Easy reach of many restaurants and pubs so there was always somewhere to eat within walking distance.
Plenty of staff around and they were all very approachable.
Room was cleaned on a daily basis and tea, coffee, milk, water and biscuits were supplied as needed.
As we normally have an early breakfast there was no issue with queueing or finding a table in the restaurant.
Didnt try the Marco Pierre restaurant so cant comment on that.
We stayed at the hotel whilst the Plymouth marathon was on and also the Tour of Britain cycling event . Managed to park our car either in the underground car park or in the road at the front of the hotel. I know people do have issues with car parking. The over ground car park was blocked off for the first few days.
We did have issues with the three lifts breaking down, luckily all three didnt break down at once but there were times when two of the three lifts were out of action. This resulted in having to wait a long time for a lift with room to get in. Probably not so good for those who are unable to access the stairs!!
All in all we had a great time!
This IHG hotel was super impressive. As a Crowne Plaza it had everything you’d expect but the location was superb right on the The Hoe which IMO is the most beautiful part of Plymouth with the most impressive views. It was also so close to the Barbican and town centre - brilliant.
The pool was great for the kids. I would say the restaraunt was one of the nicest I’ve ever been to located at the top of the building in the ‘Penthouse’ with elevated views across the city and sea. The maître d' was so so good and the food consistently excellent over the three days we stayed.
However three problems:
1/ The parking garage is a nightmare, hardly any room to park, tight turning through the narrow tunnels to get through, parking bays are tight and someone parked us in on the last day as we were trying to leave. This should never have been allowed and should be monitored by staff and immediately addressed.
2/ I asked for a firm pillow and the manager said ‘we don’t have any’.
3/ IHG now have a policy to not provide family rooms with twin beds. A sofa bed for a 10-yr old and a 14yr old is NOT ACCEPTABLE. I asked for a twin bed family room alongside the King/Double we got, but was told IHG no longer do these - this is NOT ACCEPTABLE IHG!
This hotel is worth the money. The staff went the distance, the room was clean and comfortable, parking was easy, food and wine were fantastic. Would come and stay again.
I did email twice before submitting this review to give the hotel chance to respond, but in line with other reviews there was not even an acknowledgment.
This I find disappointing as it shows the management really do not care.
Whilst we generally had a good stay there were a few grievances.
As part of Spire Elite membership, we should have been able to check in by 10:00 if the room was available. We also filled in an early arrival preference prior to arrival.
We arrived around 14:30 and checked in. We were advised to sit in the lobby and wait until the room was ready.
At 15:00 I joined the queue to ask for an update (No separate check in for priority club members)
When I reached the front of the queue I had to check in again, to be told it was still not ready.
I had to repeat this process another 3 times, each time joining the queue and checking in again, until the room was finally ready at 16:30.
I was twice given vouchers for free drinks, but one of these was only for 1 drink amongst both of us!
I would have appreciated a comment on the reason for the delay as this was totally unacceptable and took 2 hours out of our short stay.
Other minor points.
The hotel has 3 lifts. During our stay only 2 were ever working,,often reducing to only 1. On the day of departure, I stood waiting on the 10th floor for the only lift that services the car park. After 10 minute I gave up and took the other lift. When I reached the ground floor there was a maintenance team working on the other lift. Why was there no sign on the other floors to say it was out of order?
The room booked was at the King executive rate. The room itself was not very luxurious, the only items in the mini-bar were water, and the toiletries were basic. It was also quite noisy due to being below the restaurant and near the lifts.
P.S. The executive rooms are advertised as coming with Sky, but only a handful or programs are available, and none of the films.
On the positive side the hotel is very nice. It has a great location and the sea views were magnificent. The Staff were always helpful and polite despite the issues above.
Perfect location for a Wedding we were attending. Great views from the penthouse breakfast room, the breakfast was exceptional with fantastic choice and well presented. …
The King Room was roomy and comfortable but the bathroom was minute. Disappointing for this standard of room.
Overall the conference arrangements were excellent but the food( a buffet) on …
A pleasent visit to the Crowne whilst working in Plymouth. I found this hotels best asset is its staff who are excellent and work hard for the hotel.
The hotel itself was good the room was clean and comfortable anf the amenities …
As Christmas Party venues go this is top tier. The staff were incredible and polite. The food was fantastic and the venue/entertainment was great. My only point was that the bar was really understaffed for the amount of customers. Really felt for staff rushing around after a (partially) impatient crowd.
Good and spacious room with nice view to sea. Good sized indoor pool, steam and sauna are a plus.
Breakfast served are really good. Dinner was okay.. but there are more charges, vat, service and tax on top of this..
Cost of the starter Calamari in regular menu is double the cost from a kids menu, although the dish / quantity served for kids / Adults are exactly the same, which I don't understand.
The Plymouth Crowne Plaza is in an ideal position for getting to all the local sights. We use the hotel for a large gathering every 2 years and this year has been at least as good and probably better than before. The improvements made to …
Views from the Penthouse dining area are amazing. Great place to have even just breakfast. Swimming pool was a bit on the cool side but the sauna was great.
All members of staff including maintenance guys were helpful and friendly. …
This hotel is perfectly located for everything that Plymouth has to offer, with the Hoe and Barbican one side of the hotel to the City Centre a few minutes walk on the other side. …
Lovely place to stay. Very polite and helpful staff.
The bar area is a little haphazard in the foyer, but still comfortable.
The rooms are a great size with a great view from the higher floors.
Only downside was that only 1 lift out of 3 was working.
Air conditioning unit was not working and made the room uncomfortable. It was reported to reception immediately and maintenance men attended. When we returned to the room it was still not working and there was no notification from any …
Nice hotel, location and great food, kind staff, nice room too but my heating won't work. Offered a heater instead (or change room). Cannot complain .. but the heating affair knocks down two stars..
Stayed for 4 nights for leisure purposes. Staff as always with IHG were brilliant from the start of the stay to the end. Facilities clean and room was large and spacious we stayed on the 9th floor. Location is perfect right on the Hoe …
Staff is very friendly . Hotel is nice if we took about location and security that was impressed but I was in hotel with 2 kids and sofa was with pillows but don’t have any sheets . And on floor was lot of hair . So hotel is nice and is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ But probably they have some problem with cleaning staff
We had an enjoyable two night stay at the hotel whilst attending our annual Rotary conference. Staff overall were helpful and courteous.
Room quality was good although it would have been beneficial to have had some drawer facility.
An old hotel that has been tarted up to look half decent. The lifts make you want to use the stairs even if you're staying on the top floor! Nice breakfast. Good restuarant with great views. Nice location for a walk along the Hoe. NOT GOOD …
Stayed at this hotel for husbands 60th birthday. Staff were friendly, polite and accommodating and could not do enough.
Views from the hotel are spectacular and breath taking.
Breakfast was a good varied choice and you could request alternatives if you wished.
Only downfall was only 1 working lift which they were unable to get fixed, not ideal with several floors to negotiate, however that cannot be judged as staffs fault . Close to town and shops and close to walks along front and harbour.
Very clean and very good measures in place to protect staff and visitors.
Would highly recommend this hotel, we loved it.
Well located hotel, overlooking the Hoe and minutes from the city centre and Barbican/port area
Loved the pool and sauna area for a relax after busy day. …
Parking was an issue as they had an event on and closed the smaller car park, we arrived at 8pm on the day of check in after an 8 hour journey and paid the £10 a day to use the car park only to find if was full.
The staff in the hotel were very polite and professional. Would recommend the breakfast.
Good location to local facilities.
Hotel ok, smart etc. Have not stayed so will not comment further than the bar. Bar not bad but soleless. Staff very nice and courteous. Tried to have a bottle of champagne and canapés at Marco Piers but that's not on the menu. Surprisingly turned away from his half full restaurant and sent downstairs for a cider. Shame a nice don perinon and some over priced canapés would have still been preferable. Maybe I'll have better luck next time.
Firstly the location is fantastic for visiting central Plymouth, and the staff were all very helpful and friendly.
Throughout our stay there was 1 lift of 3 working, however the restaurant and …
We had 2 rooms for 1 week. A twin with sofa bed for our 3 teenage/young adult boys and an executive King with club room access. The rooms were comfortable, largely clean and well presented.
The breakfast was good value and the view from the restaurant was superb!
The club room whilst a nice (paid for) extra, because the hotel was busy, the club room in the evening wasn't a pleasant experience as it was incredibly busy.
This was our main holiday due to cancelling our holiday abroad. Due to the location of the hotel and the largely warm weather; we all had a great time and I would recommend this hotel and location for an action holiday, with young adults/teenagers.
As a family we enjoyed the Lido (Very cold), a dip in the sea by the cliffs, sea fishing with Plymouth Boat Trips and then having our fish cooked for us by the chef at the Boathouse, paddle boarding
Everything about this hotel was great from the moment we checked in. Staff were friendly, approachable and helpful. Our room was great with a lovely seaview and a comfortable bed. The room was exceptionally clean. Breakfast was amazing, we didnt have an evening meal there as we were out a lot but the menu was good.
It's in a great location , a short walk to The Hoe and seafront and The Barbican harbour. Just pop over the bridge and visit the aquarium- fantastic! Also a short walk to the town centre with a good range of shops. We stayed here for 4 nights as part of our honeymoon- not realising my cousin who got married the day after us, was staying here at the same time! No idea at all, we are from Berkshire and they are from Kent!
Family visit. All enjoyed the breakfast - nice range of food and drink options. Brilliant views in the restaurant too! Room was clean and also cleaned daily which I wasn't aware would be running due to covid restrictions. Swimming pool had …
Hotel is lovely, and the staff very friendly. Our room was very spacious and clean. Will definitely use this hotel again.
Easy access at the hotel but a bit of a hill to climb latterly if walking from the railway station. Very attentive check in staff, looks welcoming. Usual hand sanitizer boards scattered about but those by lift, empty. Only one lift working when we arrived and following day and the wait is a bit annoying. Room clean and well laid out close to lift. All the staff are helpful. So far a great stay.
Stayed at the crowns plaza for one night with family of 4. Upgraded room with sea view. Location is great and room was large but bathroom was tiny. Room also needed a renovation, was quite battered on entry and no toilet roll or toilet roll …
VERY ENJOYABLE STAY
The room was clean and a decent size. Ceiling in the bathroom was low when you stood in the bath to have a shower. Breakfast is abundant and of good quality with a fine view. Drinks could have been quicker to be offered and delivered at breakfast. Saying that staff were helpful and polite.
Used this as a base for a concert at the Plymouth pavilions.
Really hand for this venue.
Only a 10 minute walk from hotel (unfortunaltly on this occasion health issue …
Upgraded to an executive room, huge room with great views. Room was spartan and very cold, bathroom had no heating whatsoever. Heater put on maximum but didn't improve the comfort of the room. The hotel is old and tired, won't be staying again.
Pretty average hotel, not 4 star standard. Simple amenities missing. We had nowhere in the bathroom to hang our towels, no hooks and only a small towel rail above the toilet (couldn't use the toilet when towels were hanging off it). Breakfast all seemed a bit of a rush for the staff; we never had anyone take our hot drink order on our second morning there. Apart from breakfast staff, all other staff members we interacted with were friendly, efficient and helpful. Only 1 of the 3 lifts were working and it took ages to arrive causing queues to use it, based on the reviews it's likely been like that for a while. We were reccomend to stay on a high floor at check-in because of the view, but we wouldn't have done that if we'd have known we would be taking the stairs most days because of the lift issues. For the price, I would expect parking to be included for guests. I'm sure there are better alternatives in Plymouth, so I won't be returning.
Staff did a great job at the conference - very professional. Buffet lunch was tasty too. Drinks were expensive!
I always book the Executive Suite the room was roomy and clean due to covid no extras like slippers and other bits. Had nice view of lighthouse and town. Breakfast was included and great choice although because of covid we had to line up …
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The rooms are largest that I have ever seen in the UK. The check-in was very smooth and the staff everywhere genuinely wanted to help (special mention to Natalia at the reception).
We ate at their ground level restaurant and they have a lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Drinks were fantastic as well.
The highlight of this hotel is their top level restaurant where they serve their breakfast in the morning. DO NOT miss it. It really deserves all the hype that is given to it on their website.
Do not miss their breakfast too. LOTS of options for all dietary requirements.
I am not giving 5 stars because of the limited parking space in the hotel parking lots. We reached the hotel late at night and struggled to find a parking spot near the hotel. Do not take it for granted that you will find a parking spot because hotel offers it. They have a very limited spots for such a big hotel.
Lastly, our bath drainage was b clogged and the housekeeping fixed it after several calls. Messed up our plan by 60 mins or so. I am willing to assume that it happened because the hotel was full and the staff was overwhelmed.
An old hotel that has been tarted up to look half decent. The lifts make you want to use the stairs even if you're staying on the top floor! Nice breakfast. Good restuarant with great views. Nice location for a walk along the Hoe. NOT GOOD …
The property is in an excellent position to explore the town, safe onsite parking. Staff were really helpful. Bathrooms are small, but the beds are large and comfortable.
As always a great stay in a great location. Town centre and Drakes shopping just a walk away as is the Barbican and its facilities plus of course the super walks along the Hoe. …
Air conditioning unit was not working and made the room uncomfortable. It was reported to reception immediately and maintenance men attended. When we returned to the room it was still not working and there was no notification from any …
Lovely hotel and rooms very big and comfy.
Bed was very comfortable and spacious.
There was only 1 lift in operation on our stay which was fine as we were on floor 1,however when going for breakfast climbing 10flights was not fun.
The party night was good and the entertainment was superb, food was lovely and had a great evening.
A very small bathroom for a king room. Function food on first night very poor and not enough for all delegates. On night two all 3 courses were superb. Breakfast was brilliant and breakfast staff so helpful.
A fab two night stay. The deluxe rooms with sea view are spacious even with a double sofa bed. Beds are huge and comfy. The swimming pool, sauna and steam room are an added bonus. Excellent location.
First class Hotel with excellent proximity to the Hoe and Barbican. Surrounded by a plethora of different restaurants and eateries. Good proximity to the City centre and all amenities. The hotel is exceptionally comfortable and perfectly …
Family visit. All enjoyed the breakfast - nice range of food and drink options. Brilliant views in the restaurant too! Room was clean and also cleaned daily which I wasn't aware would be running due to covid restrictions. Swimming pool had capacity restrictions so this and the breakfast needed to be pre-booked. We had no issue with this.
Unfortunately the lift from the car park to the hotel was not working which was a bit of a pain taking the luggage up the stairs with little ones. Also there was quite a wait for check in and check out so more staff on the desk would have helped.
Overall it was a lovely stay, clean and comfortable and in a lovely location with a pub and an express store round the corner.
I really enjoyed my single night stay in the Crowne Plaza Plymouth. The staff were friendly, polite and very helpful. Check in and out was well organised and I had practically no waiting time to do so. Breakfast was very good with lots of …
Room was very good. Amenities were available, but we didn't use them. Good location for walking to the attractions/pubs and about 15 minutes walk to the train station if you wanted to do a day trip somewhere (train fares are much cheaper …
Our visit was to celebrate our Grandaughters 1st Wedding Anniversary. We stayed last year and were the first guests to arrive after lockdown.
We have always found staff at the hotel friendly and helpful. The Receptionist …
This is a well maintained hotel with good service. Breakfast and views from the restaurant are the best in Plymouth. The location is very good with just a short walk to the shopping centre, and the bars and restaurants in the Barbican.
The hotel has everything you need with a fantastic restaurant in the penthouse which is also used for Breakfast.
There is a gym and pool to use as well, plus the hotel is located by the Hoe and …
The property is in an excellent position to explore the town, safe onsite parking. Staff were really helpful. Bathrooms are small, but the beds are large and comfortable.
I was visiting Plymouth for my daughters graduation and I was pleased that an Crown Plaza was available. I used my Spire membership points to book the room. I travel a lot and often book on points so I know you can't expect the best rooms …
A lovely stay. Breakfast was so much better than last time, both mornings. The scrambled eggs were amazing. The only drawback was that two of the lifts weren't working. The staff told us that they had been broken for weeks and that due to …
The hotel provides good service however the basement parking is absolutely treacherous. …
Lovely hotel, friendly staff, rooms large, comfortable beds and lovely bedding and pillows. Parking limited for so many rooms. Stayed in this hotel many times and this was the worst cooked breakfast I’ve had (eggs hard etc) long wait time for the lifts did also irritate
Stayed here a few times over the years good location. Room clean but hotel looking very tired. Only one lift working which is a nightmare for a busy 11 storey hotel. If you want to use the lift you'll be waiting 30mins, so most use the stairs. Asked manager about the lift situation and he said it had been like it for weeks!
Breakfast average, you can order waffles and pancakes if you ask.
Location of the hotel is excellent with easy access to the harbour. Rooms are nice and restaurant and food is nice. But we could not get our room until 4.45 and had to wait around. Every time (including check-in), we wanted to speak to …
A very small bathroom for a king room. Function food on first night very poor and not enough for all delegates. On night two all 3 courses were superb. Breakfast was brilliant and breakfast staff so helpful.
I think it's a decent place to stay, they have a gym , 2 restaurant's, pool, steaming room and a sauna. The staff are nice and everything seemed fine however they didn't really clean my room, all they did was make my bed and not even change
the sheets. Other than that its a decent place to stay at over the weekend or a holiday.
We were told that the hotel is being renovated but not all rooms have been completed. This is not acceptable given the poor state of the rooms and the quality of the food. You cannot charge these prices for this poor quality. …
I really enjoyed my single night stay in the Crowne Plaza Plymouth. The staff were friendly, polite and very helpful. Check in and out was well organised and I had practically no waiting time to do so. Breakfast was very good with lots of …
A fab two night stay. The deluxe rooms with sea view are spacious even with a double sofa bed. Beds are huge and comfy. The swimming pool, sauna and steam room are an added bonus. Excellent location.
Second time at this hotel and return because the beds are so comfy and I slept so well along with the view at breakfast time overlooking Plymouth Hoe. Special mention goes to the water pressure on 7th floor, I had a real power shower which was so refreshing each evening and morning.
Its has a descent spa facility and location is excellent. It honestly has alot going for it to make your stay feel good.
Down side is only 1 lift working which is shared by staff, the other 2 along with staff lift have been out of order for sometime now and its really quite annoying. I understand they are being repaired and should be OK for 2022?
I travel to Plymouth on business and look forward to my stay at the Crown Plaza. Rooms are spacious and the upgraded bathrooms are my fave. Well worth getting a room here, even if it’s just for the breakfast sunrise experience in the Penthouse!
Nice hotel, staff are good, my rooms have been great other than a little dark, I like my room to be super bright. Their rooms have more mood lighting. But that's a personal thing for me, food is pricey but nice, gym is ok. Breakfast is excellent.
The hotel is nice, only stayed one night as had an early conference there in the morning, the staff are helpful and friendly.
Only things that let my stay down were the carpet in my room was very stained and some hairs left in the bath.
The price for parking is very expensive at £15 a night, the car park is secure, but very tight and low ceilings.
