Reviews of National Railway Museum
P. R.
The National Railway Museum is a must and a fabulous place to take young children. A tremendous amount of railway history in one place from the Rocket, the first ever intercity passenger train in the world running from Crown Street Station in Liverpool, to the Mallard, the Royal Scot, and the Maglev and Bullet trains. Great cafe, great activities for the kids, and a fabulous little miniature railway. Right next to Yorks mainline Station so it's really easy to get to.

It was my son's dreams come true experience.
So many trains in clean well preserved status, even a Japanese bullet train!
Mallard Experience was only for the children above 110cm, so he couldn't try, but for 3-4yrs old, miniature railway was cute and nice enough.
The cafe was ok.
The one in the Great Hall looked more spacious but the other one was cuter.
There's a indoor playarea for little ones, and outdoor playarea for older ones.

Lots and lots of trains here and some famous ones too. Everything from Royal carriages to fish transporters. There are two halls and a north and south shed. The first hall houses mostly steam collection, the Mallard and Shinkansen are in the grand hall, the south shed is currently closed and the north shed is a storage area of railway related object which is in itself a museum. Covid safe measures in place all around. Only thing that let this lovely place down is the bad service from the Grand Hall Cafe.

Due to restrictions imposed because of the Covid19 pandemic, a number of exhibits are currently unavailable. Despite this, we had a very pleasant time at the museum. Bookings must be made in advance, and visitor numbers are currently limited and must wear a face covering. The museum has gone to great lengths to ensure visitors are as safe as possible at this time.

Superb, restored exhibits.
Booking and ticket experience is not good - way too complex, just to effectively force a donation - however if used entry is easy bypassing queues.

The greatest experience ever. It was free but the parking was £10, but in all honesty it's worth paying simply to keep this place going. The mini train was great! I think it was about £4 per person, nice little experience. There's tons to do and the trains are astonishing.

Amazing museum, both mine and my 4-yr old’s favourite. The place is free to enter, exceptionally well thought out, and truly stunning. The Mallard Experience in particular, makes you feel like you’ve been part of history. Whether you’re “in to trains” or not, you simply cannot visit York without visiting the National Railway Museum..... a National Treasure!

It is a very good collection. I think you should go there on a morning. Car park is available abit 300m away which costs £ 10 for allday and there is no hourly charging in this car park. Plan your whole day while car is being parked here which saves money for parking. It takes nearly 4 hours if you see it in detail.

Fantastic time to be had by adults and kids. Had a brilliant time and it was wonderful to see a coach that my grandfather did the crest on and to see a locomotive that pulled a train which I went on as a teenager

Enormous place. Really beautiful with many different kind of trains. Lovely you feel like you live in another century. You can also drink and eat there. Many collection of trains.

had a great day here, lots to see and do and i would recommend it even if you are not a railway enthusiast

A perfect place to spend with family..there is no time to get bored in this amazing museum

Fabulous and immaculate collection of engines, carriages and oddments very well restored and preserved. Needs two hours to even start to do it justice. My family all worked at Horwich loco works and I pleased to see two engines from there including the first one they made.

Great museum and it’s free (but I’d suggest to donate). Not just for train geeks.
B. K.
Didn't go inside. Just went to see Braunton in all its splendour. A lovingly cared for locomotive.
J. F.
Loved seeing all the old rail cars and Royal carriages. Thought the mobile mail was cool!
E. L.
I went here because it was free and ended up becoming a big fan! I've been back twice since the first time and always enjoyed my visit.
It's really interesting!!!
The royal carriages are fascinating, the history of the railways is well-told, the chances to climb inside are many, the watering holes are great (lovely place for afternoon tea) and I can't believe that you can get away with not giving them a penny!
To be fair, I've always felt the urge to contgribute to the collection boxes as I know the money is going to be well-used, but if you're visiting York and have spent all you holiday money then go to the Railway Museum and you won't be disappointed.

This place is great for spending a couple of hours ,even if you don't like trains still well worth a visit, its free to get in but the car park is £10 all day it's just a flat fee so if you stay one hour or all day still £10,there are cafe's in side to get food and drinks,it is well worth a visit.

Amazing place to visit. So much to see. So glad we went. Fascinated by the enormity of the trains. A must for anyone visiting York even if you're not a train enthusiast

We have been here many times and it has to be one of the best railway museums in the country ..
There is a massive array of exhibits and activities
This last visit was on a bad day weatherwise so it was a little too busy to enjoy
Also i was struck by how poor the light was ..as the sky was heavily overcast
It made photography very difficult on this occassion
R. M.
Amazing museum to visit if you love trains!! Very easy to get to! And a very good price to get in!
T. R.
Not as great as previous visits with all the trains closed to walking through.

(Translated) Nice museum, beautiful models are presented there, but not the most beautiful museum in Europe, in my opinion, as we can read in places.
(Original)
Jolie musée, de beaux modèles y sont présentés, mais pas le plus beau musée d’Europe, selon moi, comme on peut le lire par endroit.
