Reviews of The Crescent Community Venue
B. R.
Great small venue. Easy walking distance from York Station or Micklegate. Some interesting music in this Community Venue. And, always an excellent selection of beers (cask, keg & can).
D. F.
Great little venue. The right size to feel engaged with the acts.
Went to see The Ukrainians as a first time visitor, but I’m sure I’ll be back.
D. B.
Amazing little venue in York. When small venues are closing left right and centre this place is a beacon for small bands and it's a thoroughly nice place to be. Easy to walk to from the station. Nice ipas and lagers on tap and loads of room to jump around to bands.
B. G.
An excellent gig venue, and a pretty great bar. I've had the joy of returning this week to see two excellent artists. Nice range of beers, pool room and DJ desk along with the main stage room.
They usually have a great sound coming out of those speakers, and super-friendly staff on the door and the bar. Long live live music!
R. B.
Great gig venue, good booze prices, friendly staff and regulars. It's got big Brudenell vibes, which can only ever be a good thing. Defo coming back.
J. B.
We have been here a few times. This was the largest crowd and it was like a sauna. Ive never been so uncomfortable. Never walked out of a gig soaked to my underwear ever. Brilliant gig just seriously needed air conditioning turning on
E.
Special mention to Alistair four supporting myself and my partner (both visually impaired) to have a great time. Helped us to our seats and the bar, checked on us during intervals and made sure we got to meet the act after the show as well. Really good venue with lovely staff.
T. W.
Great old school, working mens style venue, good small bar area for a drink before the gig, usually well staffed with friendly service.
P. R.
More than a match for better known venues, The Crescent has a fantastic variety of performers. It is clearly run by people with a genuine passion for music.
m. h.
great evening watching the fantastic Mostly Autumn. lovely venue. friendly staff. :)
S. J.
Went to a gig on Friday evening. Great venue to see a band. Good selection of nice unusual beers.
J. P.
Very pleasant venue. PA was too loud but otherwise a nice evening out. Recommended.
M. M.
This is a great intimate venue. We went to see Dreadzone play and can honestly say were not disappointed. Nice atmosphere and moved on to the bar at the front after the main show.
A. D.
Made the annual (ish) trip to see Blackbeards Tea Party! It's a fab little venue with a good view of the stage from anywhere in the room. The bar and the loos are on hand too, so no need to trek to the moon and back for either of them. Convenient coat hooks by the door, and a bar for pre-gig drinks too (that don't cost the earth!). We will definitely be back next December, if not before!
S. W.
Intimate venue. Reasonably priced bar. We enjoyed our evening here.
A. G.
I felt totally safe here wonderful staff wonderful place ...just wish it were in my town!!!
m. a.
Very nice small gig venue, great selection of beers, friendly staff, and plenty of good local pubs and takeaways etc nearby.
Y. R.
One of the last few remaining live music venues in York, which is a sad situation. They should capitalise on that now that Fibbers has gone, try and make it like the Brudenell Centre in Leeds. The place does not hold many unfortunately, probably a couple of hundred tops which will restrict the bands that can come, but its a good venue and doing its best to keep live music alive in York, so well played ❤
p. t.
Great little music venue, really good sound set up of live band.
Friendly bar and door staff
H. H.
This place is the only good thing about York nightlife/culture in my opinion. Very grateful to the guys who organise the gigs.. long live The Cres ❤️
J. H.
Great concert but no seats so was sitting on floor - cant stand for over 4 hrs.
T. M.
Went to see Isaac Gracie here. Small venue strange smell but other than can't complain. Had a great night. Ncp parking round the corner was a bit pricey but the venue tickets where cheap so can't complain
N. M.
One night, local bands, the next night, an international touring artist. The Crescent is the crown jewel of York's vibrant music scene.
S. M.
Great night out, can't beat live music
K. B.
Hey. What a lovely venue. Everything about it tip top. Even the smell. How do you maintain a working men's club smell? Come and ask the management here. How do you host a comedy gig? Come and ask the folk here. Lovely.
C. J.
I had so much fun, so many times in this place it's amazing. The beers are magnificent great staff with great service. Free pool table and video games.
W. O.
Spot on city venue for music, comedy and beer. Went to the excellent Blues Festival on Saturday -- a great crowd enjoying some great music in a welcoming atmosphere. Easy to get to by bus from anywhere in York so you can leave the car at home and enjoy a pint or so. Bar service excellent. I went for the music and it didn't disappoint but a star turn for me, about four hours in, was the meat pie with some utterly delicious gravy. Don't hesitate. Have one. I'll be back, as Arnie once said.
M. W.
Great disco though there are better 90s tunes yhan the ones you played - dont r.emember much more but good venue
A. L.

Great venue. Great staff & bar. Great gig.
J. r.
Although busy people were polite. Staff very friendly. Performance tonight (tribute Bowie) hats off ....were excellent. All musicians could really play their instruments and of course ' Bowie' was class! Well done!
H. P.
Fantastic small venue, brill atmosphere! Seen some great bands here!

Great music venue, well run by friendly and efficient staff
G. W.
A great roots music venue, long may it continue
G. A.
Great music venue, a bit foisty smell when you first go in , but great sound.
D. S.
Really great venue. Parking opposite the venue is good value. I thought the drinks were reasonable and they did Heineken 0% which is great if you are driving.
M. C.
Great gig Robert Jon and the wreck 🤘 Great venue 👍
G. M.
Fab venue - like a fancier version of the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds!
N. J.
Fantastic small venue with great selection of beers, friendly staff, and a wide range of events.
G. K.
Brilliant venue. Staff are very helpful. Set in a former wmc so it has a very good look!
The gigs here are amazing and are put on by very knowledgeable people. Joe from please please you books the best artists, and hosts the best gigs. Other members of the team are also sound as a pound. The sound guys are always bang on, and it's a great sounding venue. A real gem. Good drinks and the venue has bags of character. Overall 5/5. One of the main reasons to visit York!
L. L.
Lovely venue, saw The Orielles on Tues 26 Feb and was mightily impressed by the venue and how friendly was. Great find and will have to visit again
L. A.
Awesome venue, great his, bands and DJs.
R. K.
Went to an exhibition of drawing by musicians, bit of a mixed bag of course but some gems.
The venue is lovely, not firing on all cylinders yet but still a nice bar and lively staff.
M. R.
Great bar, amazing live music venue, the world's best pin ball table and the friendliest staff in York. Love it here.
A. S.
Great music venue. Enjoyed Blackbeard's Tea Party and Chu Ma Shu. Nice beer and atmosphere
C. L.
Great venue. Nice choice of ales.
K. J.
Tidy but musty smell, staff friendly and band play were ace,
B. F.
Great live music venue!
G. W.
Absolutely brilliant venue, sound and staff.
Highly recommended if you are looking for a top venue
P. K.
It used to be a working men's club but has been converted to stage mainly bands but there are other forms of entertainment. It's a small and comfortable venue : serves a good variety of beers lagers spirits and soft drinks. There are 2 rooms one a bar open to all the other the concert room . We went to see a band called Stick in the Wheel an excellent band good sound set up and no earplugs needed. Great views of the stage throughput the room and you could interact with them throughout the concert. Excellent disabled access and toilet facilities. The only reason I've given it 4 stars is that parking is a problem . But value for money 13.50 to see a band of great stature in the folk world is excellent.
I loved it but you really need to log onto the website to find out what's on otherwise you'll miss some real gems .
It's intimate and a really excellent venue
J. H.
What a great little venue. Never thought that a socially distanced gig would be so well organised yet offer so much full - on fun. Long may it prosper.
H. R.
Great and big place for live music, there will be a band 3 times a week minimum. Pleasant staff and really friendly and welcoming owner. His name Bob, easy to talk to and very happy to help others.
N. L.
Absolutely fantastic venue, cheap beer and great atmosphere.
B. H.
Great live music venue, kept clean and lovely staff.
M. H.
Great little venue, intimate but a good size for an atmosphere.
S. J.
A most excellent place to watch a band. Thank you Dreadzone. Love, life and unity.

For me, The Crescent has redefined what a working men's style venue can be by bringing it into modern times, with a large part of the value of the space lies in how it embraces its heritage in the feel of the decor.
We came here for a staff do and having been here for a few short nights at the Mediale and with other groups, I'd not really spent much time in The Crescent properly, despite knowing some of the folk who run this venue - so I knew of the positive reputation they have built up (rightly so).
Having spent an evening here, I can say that I really value the top room with the Wii, Bar Billiards and Pool. We had so many games of billiards, which I've never played before, and the room was a large enough size for the group to be split without feeling crammed. As the party grew, one group moved down to near the decks with no fuss: again showing the versatility of The Crescent.
As a fan of dark beers, I was pleased to see a milk stout on tap and cans of Brew York's Tomoko. The beer selection is large enough for a night for me.
What a fab venue! Great work, guys. I'll have to pop in more often and get some more gigs, although I'll really be there for the social side and friendly faces I know.
H. B.
This place is hands down the best venue in York. Free Pool, Free Bar Billiards, reasonable beer prices and more events and gigs than you can shake a stick at. Disclaimer: I am biased, I work here. It's a great place to work to.
Y. R.
York's newest and finest live music venue. They also do comedy, film and many community events. Great bar, good food, terrific live room with lovely sound quality, central & very close to the station.
Very friendly & welcoming.
A. B.
Went last night to see the amazing Skerryvore. First time in The Crescent and we were all really impressed. Not overcrowded, easy to see the gig, the bar staff and door staff were friendly and helpful. Fab, will definitely return.
A. A. D.
Former working men's club that's become Yorks premier live music venue. Amazing bookings, great beer and friendly staff. It even has an area for games! What more could you want.
s. f.
Great place but needs more seating!
G. M.
First time here to see Simon Brodkin. Small, nice venue with friendly staff and clientele. Will definitely return
L. N. W.
I can’t say enough good things about this venue. Really warm atmosphere and lovely people. Rock shows curated by Please Please You productions in the back hall, and fun dance nights in the front bar. Thumbs up all around.
J. C.
I love a working man's club that gets decent acts in from all over of all different kinds. It has that distinctive working man's club feel and smell. Call it a community centre now but this was a WMC for the most of its life. Lost in an era of mid eighties carpeting and poor lighting but at least it's an authentic vibe. The gig hall is a decent size with a bar. Smallish stage but good viewing of it. The only gripe I have is the beer prices. £4.40 for a pint of lager? In a WMC? In York? Come on. Less greed. More 'community' spirit.
In response to the owner's response:
Brooklyn Lager - £4.40 Bad Seed Kiwi - £4.40 - total for the two drinks £8.80 (I know how many drinks I bought and the cost of the total). This is what I was charged for a round of two drinks. You're not far cheaper than many establishments in York. I mention you are no longer a WMC. If you do guest ales, that's fine but the 'miserable' bar tender, who I asked for a pint of lager, gave me no options or pricing. She just pointed at the Brooklyn Lager. Admittedly I probably should have enquired or challenged the pricing (especially when the same drinks cost £9.40 after the gig at the same bar with no explanation by a different bartender as to why (he just shrugged and walked off)) but I was there with a friend on their birthday and had bought tickets for Electric Six, who should have been playing at Fibbers. I didn't want to cause a scene and wanted to enjoy the evening. However, your comments back about the venue being far cheaper than most places in York is not factually correct and annoying. Perhaps get more communicative staff, or put a visible bar tariff on display. Also, insulting my intelligence on how many drinks I bought for £4.40 is not conducive to me coming back. Which is a massive shame as I really want to support local independent ventures, rather than big chains.
C. B.
Brilliant venue. Great atmosphere and only 5 mins walk from train station which is very handy if you're travelling from Leeds like I was as I was able to make the 11.07 fast train and got back to Leeds by 11.30. It has a touch of the Brudenell about it but arguably a bit more community-based and these are venues that need to be supported. Sound was decent enough and all in all I was really impressed. Will definitely go there again and I would suggest to others to support this venue as it is a great alternative venue pretty much on your doorstep if in York and easily accessible for those living in Leeds.
S. R.
Fantastic local venue. Let's support it in every way possible.
K. h.
Such a good venue, great value for drinks, friendly staff... Been to a few gigs here now and my book club meets here, feel like its a second home :)
J. K.
I really enjoyed the blues festival attended but it is like a working men's club and can imagine a sweaty night if busy.
P. C.
Lovely venue, good for gigs and nights out. Staff are nice and friendly. The owner is a legend - very nice and approachable. It has been amazing to see him transform the club into what it is today.
A.
Good pub with good ale and a relaxed atmosphere, there's a pool table live music and bands, they have lots of music nights and you can also smoke an e-cig so you don't have to go outside, the owner and staff are very helpful and make you feel welcome
C. D.
Came here for a comedy gig and looking at their calendar they have some great acts coming up in the future.
The decor is very dated but the drinks prices are some of the cheapest in York.
Would not suit everyone's taste but I enjoyed myself.
C. S.
Went to a country music gig there. Friendly and relaxed crowd enjoyed the music sat around small "pub" tables. The staff were pleasant and competent. Drinks were cheaper than I expected to pay (£3.50 for 500ml bootle of real ale).
Music system was spot on, clean and no need for ear plugs.
Decore reflects that until recently it was a Working Mens Club and could benefit from some refurbishment.
J. C.
A warm and welcoming place for all hosted by 3 friends who know how to please. A previous working mens club, it now has a cheap bar with lots to offer, free retro gaming and the best area in York to watch a band play.
S. H.
Brilliant little venue, and the staff were friendly 🎸🎶👍
P. R.
Really friendly felt really welcome and saw Kris Barras Band EXCELLENT 👍😁
P. C.
Great atmosphere, excellent events, good community feeling. They get some great bands/acts on too. York's best little live venue.
A. T.
Along with the Brudenell in Leeds, another fab venue. They put on some great gigs, friendly staff, well priced good quality beer, and a good range of not beer too.
A. P.
Fantastic venue. Run on a shoestring but good bar and pricing. Great staff and atmosphere. Loads of interesting stuff on. Well worth a visit.
R. M.
Massive thankyou here. Whilst watching the awesome limehouse lizzy show last night, my husband was taken unexpectedly ill, having suffered previously with a heart condition, I got him to sit down whilst I ran to the first bar to get him a drink of water. The two girls running that bar could not have been more attentive... got glass of water immediately and both of them were very concerned about him. The second girl went outside to get us a taxi straight away. They were so switched on, empathetic and an absolute credit to the venue. Didnt get your names, but thankyou so much for your help, it made me feel very looked after and enabled us to get home. Thankfully, he has recovered, BP was very low, and we will be getting a follow up with a GP. ... thankyou xx
P. B.
Love this place! It’s no exaggeration to say this venue and the team there have totally transformed the York music scene. Awesome community space for all kinds of other events too. Top work.

D. A.
York's newest and best live venue. Great food, pub prices, close to the BR station. On the national live circuit for music, comedy, DJs etc, brilliant live space.
B. N.
Superb venue. Very wide. Great for a boss sound system. Someone unfortunately had a seizure on the dance floor but the band soldiered on regardless.
A. F.
Decor is a ltle tired but the welcome is warm and genuine. This venue is unpretentious and deserves to do well. Thank you Crescent we will be back
R. T.

J. R.
best venue in York! (fulford arms is up there but too expensive) great bands, such a relaxed atmosphere
J. M.
It was pouring rain and the bouncers/bar staff insisted that no one smokes under the shelter at the front. This would be fair enough, but then 2 memebers of staff were stood under the shelter smoking... whilst telling us to stand in the rain.
Also, 5.20 a pint is criminal.
M. W.
Great venue for intimate gigs real up close and personal feel good beer and great staff
G. W.
Cracking venue! Caters for all. Such a valuable community space.
Great gigs. Sweet games room.
Can't knock the place.
S. C.
Great venue, good gig.
C. D.
This is a cool place, they book a good selection of bands and the price is about right so it gets full which makes a good atmosphere.
S. H.
A tad claustrophobic with low ceilings and low lighting. Table and chairs very close together, marking it difficult to get to the dance floor.
R. S.
Great venue just a short walk from the station, nice crowd, good price drinks, and plenty of interesting music nights
S. W.
Excellent music venue, friendly staff and cheap drinks
