Reviews of Pity Me Nursery
p. e.
Upon arrival there were several car parks leading off the entrance & we found a spot without any trouble.
The cafe was fairly busy (we did arrive around 1pm), but we were seated quickly & the staff seemed very friendly.
I might add the staff were all wearing masks & there was a very good covid policy on site.
The food was reasonably priced & both our meals were good quality.
My only gripe was the timing our food arrived. My partner ordered quiche & I had some cake. My cake arrived with the drinks (tea) & my partners arrived a good ten minutes later. I'm not concerned regarding the wait (as the cafe was quite busy), It's good practice to bring both meals together!
The selection of plants was decent & I was quite tempted to buy a small tree fern.
On the whole I'd definitely recommend a visit, remember the exit is a one way system when exiting the car park...
J. S.
I love this place. Plants are very reasonably priced and multi buys make them even cheaper. Sometimes the plants look a bit worse for wear but this is reflected in the price. I have planted up my full garden over 3 years, with shrubs, grasses and border plants, and have achieved a fabulous result. I bought daffs in spring 2016 (very cheap) as they were about finished and they come back every year. Lovely tea room which is well worth a visit.
N. R.
Lots of lovely plants, helpful staff. Went back again to get some great pots, plants and another wander round the garden. Definitely worth a return visit.
M. A.
Lovely place to meet and catch up with the opportunity to stock up the garden. Best to avoid busy times like weekends and lunchtime as it can get a bit hectic. Having dogs myself, I don't think they need to allow dogs in.
C. R.
Very good selection of all types of garden plants bushes and trees. The staff are very helpful. Have been regular but this time we went for a cup of tea and cake. Very nice. Recommended. No change in the service . Got a bamboo orchids for £1.
J. S.
Love this place but the last couple of visits the service has been very slow. It wasn't at all busy today but took 25 minutes to get a bowl of soup.
H. M.
Fabulous well cared for plants, something for every gardener, outstanding value and a great cafe serving freshly prepared sandwiches, jacket potatoes, home made quiches & pies & very tempting cakes & pastries. Friendly service too, nothing to dislike here! Highly recommended 🌟

Since we moved back to Durham in Nov 2019 we have been regular weekly visitors, especially when lockdown occured in March 2020. They really came into their own, we loved our take outs, sitting in the car picnicking! We have bought loads of plants & trees, especially bamboo! Conifers, Pansy's, Pavier, Privet, dianthus & manure! They have an amazing display of plants, plus garden barrels. We return twice weekly & despite the cafe now open we love our take outs in the car. Well done Pity Me Nursery for diversity in these difficult times.
J. M.
Pity Me Nursery is a lovely place to visit. It has an excellent range of plants, shrubs and stock for entire garden. The Coffee shop is also worth a visit.
C. C.
Nice place to visit but the cafe part as a service is poorly managed. On every occasion we go there's something wrong. This time we were seated in a table that another waitress had already gave to a family that just popped to the toilet. The hot drinks and dessert came over 10 minutes before the main because apparently the kitchen and counter run separately... Madness really when you think about that.
Basically no cohesion between any of the staff and it's hardly their fault when it's clearly a management/set up issue. On a separate occasion we waited over 40 minutes in the queue because the waitress obviously didn't know how to use the till correctly.
Other than that, the nursery is well worth a visit with okay prices and the cafe food/drink is really good.
J. L.
Dog friendly, great range of plants which were priced very competitively. We shall certainly be coming back and buying lots for our garden reno! The cafe had a huge queue outside so must be good!
S. S.
I LOVE this garden centre. It's much cheaper than any other garden centre in the area and the plants are excellent quality. They have a huge selection of everything so you're spoilt for choice.
s. I.
Fab place. Garden centre and cafe. Food is beautiful, excellent garden centre. Liz a Staff member really attentive and looked after us. Really worth a visit, we love it.
D. B.
Nice environment in the tea barn but very pricey for the quality of food. Garden centre didn't stock much in the way of garden fertiliser and fungicide.
J. C.
Been today, food delicious lovely and clean, quite a long wait and brought me chicken mayo sandwich instead of tuna mayo, was still lovely though
J. S.
Always great value plants for sale.🌱🌻🌷. Tea barn cafe food was lovely as always
B. W.
Great selection of plants at excellent prices. Also very nice restaurant
J. M. F.
Love this garden centre. Lovely colourful plants great value and advice. Lifts the spirits!
Plus gorgeous food and helpful staff thanks a lot
S. O.
This has loads of plants at reasonable prices. Also a very popular tea barn with the usual menu of quiches, jacket potatoes and sandwiches. Plenty of free parking. Worth a look.
R. M.
Pleasantly dudprised as yesrs sgo i aent judt gor coffee its huve nos teally busy and food and service so good, pfices good too x
T. B.
After doing research online and seeing that vegan options were available we were disappointed to see that nothing on the menu was vegan apart from jacket potato with beans. After a conversation with the person taking the orders the vegan in our party ordered the jacket potato stressing no butter. When the food arrived it came with a large serving of coleslaw! I suggest educating the staff of what a vegan is and what can’t be served.
We won’t be going back.
D. D.
This garden centre is one of my favourite places to visit for plants. It is so reasonably priced and there's such a good variety of plants. The tea room also serves delicious food.
S. E.
Service great food lovely would recommend and then you can walk round and buy lovely plants for your garden
A. P.
Been to get the winter bedding to brighten up the Physio entrance.
Good prices, quality and variety. Planty of helpful advice re planting.
Lovely food, dog friendly cafe.
Will be back in a couple of months.
M. B.
Nice plants fab olive trees£250,social spacing and sanitation svailable
W. W.
Very good range of plants at exceptional prices. Is definitely a nursery rather than garden centre as didn't bother with all the extra.
Cafe looked good although didn't go in.
J. K.
Always love coming here. I have a delicious bacon sandwich and a fruit scone with clotted cream and jam! Every time I look round the vast collection of plants I always but a car full! Good quality plants that have never let me down.
J. L. C.
Went for breakfast this morning ........ Full English no longer available! Rest of menu quite limited for that time of day (didn't fancy lasagne at 10.30am) . Such a shame, used to be a great breakfast experience there.
p. b.
What a find! Great cafe very open and airy with lovely log fires and home made food. Garden centre had lots to look at too. We bought 5 blue spruce and an almond 🌳
K. B.
Great coffee, service and food.
k. f.
Nice for a snack, not a gardener so cannot comment on the plants. However car park full
J. T.
Pity Me nursery always has good quality plants shrubs and trees. The Tea Barn is very popular too year round. Definitely worth a visit.
I. S.
5 out of 5 - this massive nursery has got so much to offer - plenty of plants trees bushes compost lots to choose from great!
J. C.
Visited the cafe first - good food as usual. The garden centre had a good selection of spring plants at very competitive prices, so had to indulge.
w. m.
A great Nursery and very good prices. The tea barn serves great food as well. Best deal I gotvwas 20 bedding plants for £15 and there are lots to choose from. Highly recommended
J. D.
If you need perennials or shrubs you won't get better value than this garden centre
P. D.
Excellent condition stock at very reasonable prices and really help staff. Highly recommended.
G.
Yesterday was our first visit to the Tea Barn since the restrictions were lifted. The layout of the tables within the dining area is very well done. The tables are screened in a very stylish way, while ensuring social distancing. It is clear that a lot of thought and effort has gone in to this and should provide some reassurance to customers.
Although the menu is more limited than usual, there is still a good choice of food options available.
The welcome is as warm as ever and it was great to be back!
D. H.
Lovely place..bk 2moz 4 more plants
G. H.
Huge array of plants, shrubs, trees and garden needs all in one place .
m. j.
Well stocked nursery. Reasonably priced items.
Plenty of parking.
Does get busy at times because it's SO good.
Coffee shop open for take away currently. The one way system in there isn't very clear, sadly.
B. B.
Lovely coffee shop and plants readonable and plentyful.
T. L.
A great little garden centre. All plants and trees etc, at a very fair price. An amazing variety of choice and also has a very good cafe with again, lots of choice.Would recommend to anyone. Well worth a visit.
S. H.
Loads of very reasonably priced plants, however a shortage or lack of decorative pots to put plants in.
B. C.
It’s a nice place, but everything seems to be an issue. Restaurant staff don’t seem to want to be there.
Ordering could be easier too. No full breakfast “you have to order beans on toast then add stuff separate”
Bread previously was lovely door step toast. It’s now been changed to “supermarket/thin bag slice”
K. N.
Nice food, slightly soggy chips, but the lotus biscuit cake is absolutely amazing! Would recommend to go for this alone!
Good selection of plants and helpful staff
D. C.
A wonderful selection of plants and shrubs at great prices, and the gentleman who has worked there for along time is very helpful and nothing is too much
R. E.
Any amount of quality plants and gardening products at realistic prices, helpful friendly staff and a well managed venue, highly recommended...
K. K.
Spacious, well stocked and well organised. Healthy plants but prices are on the high side. Great parking and easy exit. Good supply.of trolleys to take purchases to car.

I went for dinner with my mum today and it was lovely! The Covid restrictions are being followed to a T and we felt very safe while eating in. The partitions they have between the tables are really nice as well, it took a moment to realise they were new as they blend in so well with the decor. Theyre open until 5 but stop serving around 4:30 in order to start cleaning. We stayed until about 4:45 and they'd been thoroughly cleaning for around 20 minutes before we left which has made me more likely to return as they clearly care about the safety of customers and staff.
The cheese pie was lovely (my dog had a bit and seemed VERY happy), as was the hot chocolate. Special mention to the staff who were delightful, to the waitress who gave Oscar gravy bones and to the waitress who brought out free scones for everyone so they didnt go to waste! They are the nicest and fluffiest scones I've ever had 🤤🤤
g. w.
Very impressed still maintaining covid distancing. One way in one way out. Tables distanced by having glass partition in place. Witnessed staff sanitising tables and chairs. Staff and visitors required to wear masks until seated. 10 out of 10.
B. E.
Had a lovely couple of hours here.looking around the plants where lovely some were a bit dry but they where going around watering them.had a lovely coffee and scone husband had coffee and a hot pork butties he said it was really taste.will definitely be back as it was our first time there.thank you.
C. D.
It's great. Lots of seating in the cafe. Dog friendly cafe which is great. All homemade food. The Cakes are wonderful, I struggle to choose one. The Staff are lovely. Free parking too. And the garden centre is well stocked.
A. b.
Great selection of plants. Less pansies for the price this year but still better value than the chain garden centres. Cafe always a treat!
D. B.
Lovely nursery ,and the tea barn was absolutely lovely, amazing gluten free sandwich with nice fresh salad, prompt service and very pleasant staff, the prices were very reasonable, indoor or outdoor seating,10/10 from me.
P. C.
Lovely garden centre and cafe for light bites
P. M.
This is by far the best Nursery for plants in the Duram area. Prices are fair with good choice whatever the season. You are free to check out the plants, trees and shrubs with no hassle from the staff but they are on hand for help or advice if you need it. We wouldn't go anywhere else. Snacks and good food are available in the Tea Barn at reasonable prices whether you are buying plants or not. Great for meeting up with family or friends for a catch up. Plus they take cards for payment too. What's not to like.
D. B.
Super plants at super prices and just to complete the trip one of the best cafés I've ever been to in a Garden Centre.
L. M.
I have visited many times and usually it's nice, but my last couple of visits to the cafe have been dissappointing. Paying £2.95 for 7 chunky chips (we counted them because we couldn't believe have little were there) is a joke!!! The warmed cheese scone was hot on the outside and cold in the middle with crusty cheese on top where it had been blasted in the microwave!! The caramel shortbread was a bit of a crumbling mess. My glass had definitely not been washed it was very dirty, covered in fingerprints and looked like 10 people had used it before me. I really like this place but this has put me off visiting the cafe again.
a. l.
I love this place and come here at least once a week, sometimes more. The food is delicious and usually worth the wait when it's busy. However, the staff in the tearoom could do with a shake up for their miserable, unwelcoming demeanour. A smile wouldn't hurt and the occasional exchange of pleasantries would be nice considering they must recognise many of the people who return, like me, week in week out. A new member of staff recently I have noticed, is pleasant and smiley but as for the rest, if they don't like working with the public then they should go elsewhere.
H. M.
Warm and cosy, always full and can be noisy, but good solid healthy food served quickly by lovely staff.
Many of the patrons are regulars - I meet a friend who breakfasts there frequently, and we know others who have morning coffee three times per week.
You need a car to reach the place, but that's the only thing I hold against them
T. Y.
Always great prices and healthy plants. The Tea Barn is fantastic, beautiful food and drinks, clean, tidy and felt very safe with covid restrictions in place.
J. W.
Friendly, polite staff. Good food & drinks menu got to say coffee was piping hot lovely
K. L.
Visited on a Wednesday lunch time. Very busy, had to be patient for the meal to arrive! However the corned beef pie, chips and salad were acceptable.
Varied selection of plants reasonably priced, however due to the spell of dry weather, some were showing signs of drying out.
J. E.
Excellent
J. K.
Excellent plants. Café very busy, food good.
L. C.
Cafe service is very slow. Arrived at 10:30 am, only a couple of people in queue. Took over 20 minutes just for 2 coffees to take out. I like this place but service is very slow. In busy times they don't cope, maybe they need more staff 🤔
K. M.
Today I was at the Tea Barn with my friend. We are not from the same household and being a bit confused about current guidance we mistakenly sat together on the same table- which is not allowed now.
When I went to order I was asked if we were from the same household and I answered truthfully ( and this is important) that we weren't.
l was told that we needed to sit separately or outside- according to the current guidance.Willingly we complied- and went outside.Noting as we did the number of people, almost certainly many of them not from the same household, who must have lied when asked the same question as we had been asked..not young people either but people from the older generation..
In discussing this it emerged that the Tea Barn- doing the right thing- has been threatened with a poor review as a result..and is losing business as people, perhaps understandably don't want to comply- it isn't convenient.
I want to put it on record that the food is delicious, the staff are professional and that I hope and pray that this establishment flourishes as the proprietors and staff try to do the right thing.Karen McVeigh.
G. T.
Very nice place, excellent selections
H. F.
The prices are really good and the quality of the plants are very reasonable
a. f.
Not many vegetarian options and no vegan options for food. It was nice for a family lunch. The cake was amazing.
J. C.
The Tea Barn is a great place to go for a drink or something to eat. The cakes are fantastic. The coffee is good, although they don't have proper decaf, so make sure you order the caffeinated. The conservatory is a nice place to sit in the winter because they put the wood burner on. It gets really busy on weekends around lunch time, so just be prepared for that.
L. S.
Lovely food nice place and most of all very friendly staff. Thank you to the member of staff who offered to watch my sister's dog while I looked at the cake as I had the dog on my own and was not sure she would stay if I went to order. A pleasure. X So helpful.
c. L.
Really nice place to go for plants and they are very helpful x
E. L.
Found the garden centre by accident. Visited with my friend for the first time. Visited loads since. Everyone is impressed by the service and quality of food.
Eventually a cafe that catered my food allergies. Huge piece of mind that I am completely safe to eat. Everything is covered. I can get anaphylaxis reactions from air borne allergens.
Beautiful homemade items. Caterers for everyone dieting requirements. Slimmers & vegetarians.
S. C.
If you like bedding plants then there's a lot with good deals. Amazing tea barn with delicious scones and cakes.
E. C.

L. M.
Covid-wise, the one way system is very clear both in the garden centre and the Tea Barn. A good selection of plants at all times. Their Buxus plants are at really good prices compared to other more commercial garden centres.
C. M.

J. C.
Always an enjoyable time at the garden centre and in the tea barn, brilliant service ,very nice team
A. W.
Ordered pre cooked quiche salad and coleslaw 20 minutes later and people around me being served I asked if I could have a refund . I was told food can take upto 20 mins. Basically I think they forgot. How long does it take to reheat quiche. No apology.
N. M.
Great range of seasonal plants, fruit trees, conifers, perennials, shrubs and bulbs in the autumn. Many of which you won't see at any chain type Garden Centre. New stock every few weeks throughout year. Great value: I paid £15 for a 1.5m high acer palmatum. This would have been 3 or 4 times the price at a normal garden center. The seasonal plants often get reduced. I just purchased ~40 spring bulb type plants for £10 (Hyacinth, daffs, bluebells, muscari, etc). Worth a visit for horticultural reasons alone, however there is another just as persuasive reason!!! The Tea Barn is the attached restaurant/cafe. Every day, it has a huge range of ever changing fresh cakes, cheesecakes, pies and quiches, and freshly ground coffee. Extremely quick payment, service and staff. The place is always packed, so they keep expanding the Tea Barn. The latest addition is a conservatory with 2 wood burners. It's a lovely place to get lunch, and prices are not expensive at all. The tea barn food is all home cooked and wholesome. I recommend the daily specials. I can't recommend this place enough, despite the fact that their signage by the dual carriage way might have you believing they only sell pansies and turf!
A. B.
Prices are very good, nice array of plants, shrubs and trees. Coffee shop is excellent, lovely coffee and meals.
M. H.
Cheese and onion toastie followed by fruit scone with jam and butter Absolutely first class. Must be best home cooked food in Durham without a doubt. Off to buy plants now...
D. E.

V. A.
Can't beat this garden centre. I've seen it grow from nothing to what it is today. I now travel 2.45 hours to buy from these guys. Such value for money.
I. W.

J. W.
First time visitors .. didn't disappoint
L. C.
Lovely healthy plants.Takeaway service for food and piping hot coffee.Covid safe.Worth a visit.
J. P.
The Tea Barn in this garden centre offers a great alternative to a pub lunch. It is popular at lunch time but that reflects its good food and pleasant surroundings. Plenty of parking.
e. c.
Went today with 4 friends we had no complaints other than 2 of us like weak tea and when asked could we have a bit hot water and were told to queue again and pay £1 for it by doing that our tea and lunch would of been cold as it was very busy very dissapointed
J. M.
Called in to the Barn for a coffee and scone.Best social distancing I have seen in any restaurant or cafe in Durham. Food and drink and staff were excellent.
S. M.
Loads to choose from and very competitively priced!!

First class service each time we visit...dont mind the wait for food it's all fresh and beautifully prepared and presented, if I had to make an "observation " it would be I'm not happy I wasnt able to purchase a child portion because I'm an adult...but I'm an adult who has had bariatric surgery therefore am.unable to eat bigger portions...
