I attended one of Ciaran’s one day courses a couple of months back, and it was absolutely superb! Ciaran’s passion for his craft comes through instantaneously, and not only has he great skills in joinery, but in teaching as well - especially his patience! I waited a couple of months before posting my review as I wanted to take the skills and confidence I picked up and apply them to my own projects and have something to show at the end of it. I took part in Ciarán's 4 days beginner course. The amount of experience, positivity, encouragement and not forgetting the constant craic throughout each day was superb! As mentioned in other reviews plenty of tea & biscuits along with a fab pub lunch (lush) was also included. At the end of the course I have come away with many new skills, confidence to use and apply the techniques taught, a lovely side table and my mental health in tip top shape. Many thanks Ciarán ;-)

Attended the one day course today, it was truly amazing. Ciarans knowledge and experience is second to none. Made me feel really welcome and taught me some fantastic woodwork skills and I came home with a beautiful tea light holder. The course also includes a delicious lunch at a local pub which is a bonus. However, the main thing about today was that it was completely therapeutic, I came away feeling happy and relaxed and also made something I never knew I could, which is such a great sense of achievement. I'm hoping to go back on the 4 day course next year. 😊

Today is the first day after completing the 4 day beginners woodworking course and all I've done is talk to colleagues about how great an experience I've had learning with Ciaran at his workshop. The course takes you all the way through understanding the tools you'll need to use, how to maintain and sharpen them, different woods and their characteristics and finally producing a piece of furniture that I honestly did not believe I could have made at the beginning of it all. I'm immensely pleased with what I have managed to make and cant thank Ciaran enough for his excellent teaching skills, bags of patience and endless supply of brews and biscuits. Absolute top bloke. Class of: 9th to 12th June 2022. Like many of the previous posted reviews. I would recommend it to any person who has an interest in woodworking, to go on the four day beginners training course. My limited knowledge came from school over 50 years ago. We were tutored on how to properly maintain sharpen chisels and smoothing plane blades. How to use a tenon saw, Manually construct a tenor mortice joints etc. (I have never been tutored in any of these before) The final two days of the course, we constructed a display stand out of American Black Walnut and Ash. I attended Ciaran's Jan-22 course to brush up my woodworking skills not developed since secondary school, now I've retired. The four day Basic course was really enjoyable, with some really helpful guidance from Ciaran and genuine interest from him in all our attempts to make a display stand. Having a project to deliver added additional motivation to all the students, but also we were exteremely well supported by Ciaran to help us all learn the techniques and complete the piece. Ciaran's enthusiasm to teach carpentry skills is infectious and he has a great workshop to give us insight into all aspects of cabinet making. I recently attended the ‘one-day introduction to wood working’ and ‘two-day wood turning course’. I highly recommend both courses to anyone interested in basic wood working/ turning skills. Ciaran is an excellent teacher. He has extensive knowledge and experience. He is very friendly and approachable, and offers generous advice and time. A great way to learn new skills in a sociable environment. I had no previous experience and came away with some lovely pieces and much more confidence in myself! Went on the 4 day beginners woodworking course and had a great time. Everyone on the course was really nice and there was a mix of people with no knowledge at all to a few that had already had a bit of a go, and Ciarán did a great job teaching the course in a fun easy going way. Enjoyed the 4 day intensive beginners course with Ciaran which finished on Sunday 20th June 2021. Absolutely top class 4 days. I haven't done any wood work since school, over 40 years ago. Don't let that put you off if that's the same for you. Ciaran starts from the basics, builds your skills and confidence and by the end of the weekend you will have produced a stunning piece of work that you will be proud of. The course attracts nice people who are there to learn and share. On top of that Ciaran is a fantastic teacher and all round great bloke!

Just got back from a 5 day one to one intermediate course with Ciarán and I cannot thank him enough. As a teacher he is excellent and very patient. He works through by example all the different joints and if you are uncertain, he will explain in more detail. I was fortunate that the one on one tuition allowed for a bespoke approach to the coffee table project incorporating unique elements of design that would not be possible on the 6-day group intermediate course. Learning will stay with me and definitely provides me with the confidence to take my own projects forward at home. Couldn’t recommend Ciarán more highly.

Having just finished the four day beginners intensive woodworking course, I can honestly say it was the best course I've ever done. Ciaran is a fantastic tutor, very experienced, extremely knowledgeable and has excellent patience. He's also a great host. I started on Friday morning with very little woodworking skills and by Monday I had made a beautiful display stand, complete with mortise and tenon joints. Had a brilliant day at Cheshire Woodworking today on the Introduction to Woodworking one day course. Whilst I am fairly practical, I have (had?) zero experience of working with wood having done cooking and sewing at school and never having had much confidence to have a go with a chisel and saw. I have learned lots - from the tools themselves, how to use them, some simple tips to make things easier - and all while feeling that I really can do this stuff. Ciaran is a patient and excellent teacher - with a good supply of tea and biscuits along with well timed advice and help when needed. I can’t wait to book on the beginner four day course!!

I’ve just completed the 10 week beginners course (May/June 2016). I was really impressed with Ciaran’s knowledge, he is a great teacher and a true craftsman. There is a really friendly, easy going atmosphere in the work shop. With only 5 people on the course, Ciaran is able to spend plenty of time with each person if needed. I’d highly recommend the beginners course to anyone who is interested in taking up wood working. Ciaran will show you the basics and give you the confidence to create your own pieces. Intensive is the right word for the 4 day beginners course but it was well worth every second. Ciaran is a great teacher; patient, humorous and prepared to put the hours in well over and above the stated times in order to ensure we all came away with a finished piece. I completed the 4 day intensive beginners course in November. I've still not tired of showing off my completed table! I had done a few bits and bobs before, but this course did exactly what I hoped it would do; fill in some gaps in my knowledge and give me a foundation of practical skills that I could then progress from. The workshop is good, and having the cafe on site with free lunch was a real bonus! It was nice to learn with others, too. Ciaran is clearly a very skilled craftsman, and it was a real pleasure to take away even a tiny bit of his knowledge and experience. He got it right in terms of the balance between pushing you, and building your confidence. He very kindly fixed my table when all threatened to go wrong near the end! I've just completed the 10 week beginner course and from the first lesson I was hooked and looked forward to it every week. From preparing and sharpening tools through to creating your own piece of furniture, the course is invaluable for learning the fundamentals of woodworking. By the halfway point I had already been inspired to collect and prepare a full set of vintage and new tools which I used on the course (although a fine set of tools is provided) and I have already started my first piece of furniture at home. Ciarán is a great fella and teacher creating a really laid back atmosphere with no pressure and with the small class size it's like having one to one tuition. If you are interested in learning woodwork, Get it booked!

I have just completed the intermediate course having attended the beginners course last year. This one was much more challenging, it actually spread to 11 nights rather than 10. I consider myself a woodworking novice (and a bit ham fisted), but with Ciarans patient tuition I managed to produce a quite reasonable looking table. I really enjoyed the course and learned a lot. I've just completed the four-day 'Intensive Beginners'course with my 22 year-old son. Challenging, exhausting but so rewarding even for someone with my limited abilities. Ciarán is an exceptional teacher, patient, skilled and able to provide just the right level of support needed by each one of us. Having just completed the 4 day intensive beginner course, I can wholeheartedly say that if you are interested in woodworking - particularly the art of using hand tools - you will love this course. In 4 days, our group of 4 students covered loads of material culminating in a lovely ash and walnut display stand. We began with some basic but fundamental skills; tool care, sharpening, safety, specific tool techniques such as planing and chiselling, marking out and the basic joint of our project – the mortice and tenon. Over the next 3 days we went through each step to construct our piece, each an opportunity to practice skills and learn new ones. At each point Ciaran was excellent; clear in his instructions, easy going and giving just the right amount of support, not too little so you felt overwhelmed by the task, nor too much that felt an observer in your own project. Even as the final day grew well past 8pm, Ciaran was fantastic in staying much later to allow us to finish up properly and I think that speaks of his commitment to his students. Doing this course you will not come away with a piece of furniture that is perfect – however you will have in your sore and achy hands a piece you really will have worked hard to make, with a few simple tools and some new skills, and you will be proud of the end result. For me, the course has given me the confidence to go further and I look forward to investing more time in this wonderful art. Cheers Ciaran!

I recently completed the 10 week beginners course and I have already signed up for the intermediate course! After just a few lessons Ciarán had taught me enough basic skills to confidently build myself a garden bench using tenon and mortise joints, and by the end of the course I had created a hand crafted piece of furniture that I am very proud of and never would have thought I could produce! Ciarán is a genuinely nice chap and it was always a great atmosphere in the workshop (so long as you don't mind his singing) even if it hadn't been one of the best decisions I've ever made going into this course, I'd still be going back for the chocolate hobnobs and good craic, so I would. A really good introduction to wood turning - pitched at the right level to get the basics sorted and plenty of hands-on practice. This was the first course Ciaran has run post-lockdown. I was wondering how a hands - on course was going to be arranged whilst fulfilling social distancing requirements but I was reassured to see that hand sanitiser, masks and hand washing facilities were provided, distancing of the (3) attendees were adhered to, lunch was delivered to the site and demos were videoed via an iPad and displayed on two TV screens. Full marks for organisation!

The four day intensive beginners course is superb and Ciaran is the best instructor I've ever come across. I really cannot rate the experience high enough. Where to start ...... first Ciaran himself ... he is pleasant, friendly, attentive and so good at explaining and demonstrating techniques. The course has a maximum of six people on it and we each have our own bench and tool set. This is a perfect number to create a great atmosphere and allow Ciaran to spend time with each of us individually. You start with an intro to the basic woodworkers tool kit and learn how to sharpen blades. Then move on to sawing and planning and by the end of day one you're cutting a mortice and tenon joint. On day two you start to make a display stand (similar to a light weight bar stool). Over the next three days Ciaran teaches you a large number of techniques which are used in its construction - measuring and marking out, squaring up, cutting, planning, chiselling, jointing, sanding, gluing, clamping, oiling and thoughout you learn how to handle all the tools correctly. It's so easy when someone with his great skills and communication shows you how. Our group arrived with varying degrees of experience ranging from none at all, through to long forgotten lessons at school to occasional home diy exponent. We all made an attractive stand of equal quality and amazed ourselves with what we'd achieved. Throughout the course Ciaran made us regular cups of tea, supplied endless packets of all sorts of biscuits and took us to lunch every day at the White Lion. We all arrived at 8:30 and started straightaway. Most days we finished about 17:45 and the last day about 18:30 but time flew by and I was on such a roll I could have stayed all night. Ciaran stays with you every minute of every day. You are totally immersed in a world of woodworking - Ciaran has his own workshop next door to the class workshop and he shows you bespoke pieces he is working on and discusses wood selection, hardwood suppliers, how to buy wood for your own projects and where to buy tools and what to look out for. I strongly recommend that before you set off for the course you search your home tool box (and any that the family may have) and take old tools along to show Ciaran. He is an enthusiast for old tools and emphasises that they are often much better quality than modern equivalents and urges you not to throw them away. He'll show you how to clean them up and sharpen them and during the odd quiet moment you can use the tools around you to sharpen blades and restore them. Above all you'll come away with great confidence and enthusiasm and eager to tackle projects that you never dreamt of being able to tackle. I found it important to take notes throughout the course otherwise I'd never remember the steps and many tips that Ciaran provided. Go for it - if you have the slightest interest in woodworking and would like to explore whether it could become a meaningful hobby, then book onto this course. You don't need to have done the one day beginners course.

I did the wood turning course with Ciaran at Cheshire Woodworking just before the big shut down. I have already done both his beginners and intermediate courses because I have found them so good. I was not disappointed by this 2 day course. As always Ciaran was an excellent teacher who helped us produce 4 pieces from his well equipped workshop. He always runs a well taught and thorough course whilst keeping things relaxed and enjoyable. I am particularly proud of my garden dibber. My only comment now is that I have run out of courses, I hope is can add a new one for me to do.

I would highly recommend these courses. I completed the intermediate course early in 2018, after the beginners course in 2017. Both courses were great. Really informative and fun, but hard work! It was amazing to take home the end result along with new skills. Ciarán is a fantastic teacher, and a lovely bloke. Organised, patient and unassuming, which makes the course great for complete newbies, or hobbyists with a bit of experience already. The workshop is a welcoming environment (although make sure to wrap up in the colder months), and the tools he has for students to work with are great.

I have just done the 2 day wood turning beginners course with Ciaran. It was a highly enjoyable course with a friendly and extremely knowledgable tutor. Ciaran is passionate about wood working and keen to pass this on to his classes. You get 2 full days of hands on experience turning various items. In the 2 days I was there I turned a honey dipper, a garden dibber, a pen and a bowl as well as practicing using the chisels on plain wood. The lunch at the local pub which is included in the course is great with plenty of choice and as a true Irish man Ciaran keeps the tea flowing throughout the day. I ca’t believe the quality of the items I have made with Ciaran’s help and it has given me the wood turning bug. If you are thinking of doing this wood turning course I would whole heartedly recommend it to you, you will not be disappointed.

A really great experience. Learning to work with wood is one of my bucket list skills and this woodworking course by Ciarán at Cheshire Woodworking launched me on my way. The course was a great blend of theoretical and practical - Ciarán firstly introduces you to a topic, explains the details, answers questions, performs a demonstration and then sets you off to practice. He guides you step-by-step through everything you need to know, from tools to techniques, to wood types and joints, etc. Every question was answered! This all culminates in you building a piece of furniture. I was a total novice but there were a couple of more experienced students in my class and they expressed that, like me, they were constantly learning. Ciarán managed the class so as to ensure that no one was left waiting or wanting - each individual progressed at their own pace. The class was a mixture of men and women of various ages, all of whom were very friendly, fun and chatty – there was a real sense of comradery in the class. Ciarán is a lovely guy, very friendly and welcoming. He developed an immediate rapport with all students. Most importantly, his skills as both a craftsman and teacher were equally impeccable. He has a few great Irish turns of phrase that add to the enjoyment of the course – keep an ear out! The greatest testaments to the quality of the course are that: a) every day the students arrived early and departed late because we were enjoying ourselves so much – the days fly by!! b) I will be booking onto another course and I know that other students from my course are doing the same. I have just completed the four days beginners course with Ciarán, and I have to say it was the best birthday/Christmas present I have ever had. Ciarán is a charming man and a natural teacher, his love of wood and working with it is infectious, his knowledge is extensive and he seems to genuinely enjoy sharing that knowledge with his pupils. As a complete beginner I was delighted with Ciarán's patience, guidance and encouragement, with his help I created a table that I would never have been able to make, even in my wildest dreams, without him. I learned so much on this course from how to sharpen and bring old tools back to life, to how to make a mortice and tennon, along with many simple little tips to make the running of the workshop more efficient without having to spend a fortune. I was also lucky enough to see some of Ciarán's bespoke commissions, he is obviously very proud of his work and quite rightly so. His attention to detail is minute and it shows in the quality of his work, which is quite exceptional and beautiful. If you are looking at this course, I recommend, without hesitation, that you do it. It has given me confidence and the pleasure I get by looking at my table and thinking "I made that!" is priceless. My wife bought me the two day wood turning course as a present. From the off Cairan was brilliant - First morning was going through safety, sharpening and the basics - excellently done. Then it was onto the lathes - that is what makes this course stand - it was so hands on! Ciaran is an excellent instructor - his passion for wood is very evident. While we got going with wood turning he kept us going on tea and biscuits. Lunch was provided at a local pub. End of the first day I was so chuffed at having turned a honey drizzler! The other items? Pen great, bowl likewise but the garden dibber? Maybe that should become part of a mortar and pestle! Again Cairan thanks for an unforgettable 2 days - certainly made me thirsty to do more.

I recently finished the Intermediate Course at Cheshire woodworking with Ciaran. I’m not surprised the man has 100 5 star reviews and only 5 star reviews. He is a phenomenal teacher and a passionate, enthusiastic and inspirational man. Aside from all the superlatives I could hurl at Ciaran for his woodworking talent and ability to communicate, demonstrate and coach you into learning these skills in a short amount of time, the course in itself was brilliant. Very well thought out even to the smallest and seemingly insignificant details (tea, coffees and biscuits), very well executed, very well managed and just magnificently carried out by a genuine and caring individual in Ciaran. I really enjoyed meeting the other students on the course and the comraderie was great. We kept each other going, shared plenty laughs and plenty encouragement. The pub meals at lunch were perfect, not too much, not too little, all brought out by friendly and accommodating staff. It seems the kindness and patience of these Cheshire folk is endless! Personally I think I’ve learnt more in a week with Ciaran and Co than I have in a year of my own endeavors on site, on YouTube and with fellow tradesmen. The course is worth every penny and I respect that’s Ciaran has priced it so that it’s accessible to even those who are not flush with cash. I couldn’t emphasize enough how this course has inspired me and brought my skills on. I could go on and on sharing stories of our good times or the endless help, favors and attention Ciaran gave me but instead I will say a huge thank you to Ciaran and just as importantly his wife, kids and family who must work so hard behind the scenes to support him and each other. Just arrived back home tired but happy after completing Cheshire Woodworking's intermediate 5 day course. We had a great group of engaged students, lots of mutual support, and Ciaran's inspirational teaching style made the course a great success. He's endlessly patient, nothing is too trivial to ask for help with, and he's committed to helping everyone get the most out of the time available. The course is well structured, day 1 making trial joints, then days 2-5 building the coffee table itself. It's hard work, to be sure - primarily a hand tool course, but we did use workshop machinery to help with some of the more repetitive cuts. Very worthwhile, and just hoping now to get an email about an advanced course!
