Reviews of Murrayfield Ice Rink

This is a step back in time but I love it here. As Ice drinks go it's not like the modern arena but you can feel the history in the place. Including the seats. Very old fashioned but it is a listed building and I would hate it if it was to change. My only comment would be if you are going watch take a jacket. It's cold
A. A.
Man with a great little hockey rink I was able to get a nice scarf with the races in the morning it was a decent game good goalkeeping obvious difference film the capitals hockey team in Washington DC vs that races but it was a pleasure to see some good competition eyes then during the halftime show where a young lady did her singles routine some of the fans explain to me the difference between the tigers and the races and told me that there were 7 racers who were injured I thought the goalie did a good job on the Rangers team even though many goals were scored everybody was very friendly
.....good fun
P. H.
If your a hockey fan you'll like this place but wrap up warm cos it's a bit cold and the seating is a bit hard , the pies are great though.
E. G.
Perfect place for family outing if you want to do something to keep them active. We adults enjoyed it too.
L. B.
I always love a good skate session. The building interior could use a generous refurbishment, but it's still a nice place. The ice is well kept. Good skates if you're hiring them. Nice staff. Overall a good place for a birthday or just a day to yourself.
R. S.
Great place to go as a family. Feels like a real community hub. The classic architecture probably doesn't make it cheap to run. All the more reason to enjoy the fair pricing for a session and the cafe when you need a wee break.
I. T.
An enjoyable evening. The ice rink is large and well maintained. For novice skaters, having disco lights with areas of darkness complicated things. A reasonable price for what you get. Skate hire was efficient.
S. G. S.
Friday night teenage disco session was great. Mix of ages, a few adults, teens of all ages and a few younger kids. Mostly beginner or competent with only a couple of experts zooming about. Not what I remember but as disco music but that's just my age.
G. M.
Great game 5-4 to the Racers!!!.
However, the Ice Rink could do with some investment!!
N. J. (.
We took a squad of us skating here with a range of ages and abilities and it was a total success.
The youngest of our group was 5 but there were plenty younger kids there as well.
The staff were pleasant.
The cost for the 2 hour skating session and skate hire meant it was affordable for the family.
There was plenty of parking right outside.
Such a great place to bring the kids and I'd even go back with out them as I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone looking for fun affordable activities in the city.
A. A.
Always good fun, and the stewards are excellent. Every time I've been there's a good mix of people - from beginners skating for the first time through people who can just about not fall over (like me) to proper experts dancing and twirling.
J. M.
I usually only go there to pick up my husband and son but attended my first game and have to say I really enjoyed it. For all it's a tired old building I will say that it is clean and tidy and staff are always there to help. My husband fell down the stairs and we were attended to straight away. First aid guys were amazing. Thank you so much
D. D.
This place is lovely! It's a beautifull vintage building, the paints a bit worn here and there, but as a listed building there's little they can upgrade and I wouldn't want them too!
Super friendly ice staff willing to help out and show you the ropes.
Been to a few 'more modern' rinks and none come close to this little gem.
K. W.
I haven't been here since for about 30 years, and it hasn't changed. My kids loved it. Very busy (but it was Christmas holidays) , but it added to the atmosphere. Good fun.
K. M.
The ice rink itself is good. Decent quality ice. The staff in the front desk can be a little abrupt.
Also find it very strange that you are not allowed in until the session is about the start, so it's definitely not a place to hang out. Also the cafe, which doesn't seem to be open much don't overlook the ice rink which I think is a bit of a loss income opportunity.
N. H.
Murrayfield racers. Great atmosphere and great hockey.
e. n.
Lovely place to skate. But I don't understand why U charge extra pound for just watching??????????????????????? Not great idea. Also should be 1hour for half price. 2 hours is far too much.
S. R.
Why does it not have the push along penguins to give youngsters & disabled skaters more confidence in the middle of the rink as how can you build confidence going round the sides of the rink? It could do with repainting and the side bits round the rink keeping the window partitions up need to be renewed as jagged edges ripped my daughter's jumper. I did however see lots of people get a 2 for 1 skating offer how come I didn't get one was there restrictions in place or was their a magic word I didn't hear?!!
Albeit my daughter and her friend enjoyed themselves on her birthday trip here. I asked about ice skating lessons was told only 1 on Sunday before the session I am surprised as I think this would be a good thing to invest in for local kids.
L. M.
Love it, love it. Take the children to 'learn to skate' on a Sunday, which is a bit of a bun fight, but fun. Friendly and helpful stewards on the ice, usually 3 or 4 floating about to help if you or your kids fall over. Never been charged to use my debit card!
C. M.
Great value at around 6 pound for two hours worth of skating on weekday evenings, including skate hire! Website lays out what times are free for general skating, family visits, and even special lesson times. A great treat for those looking to either escape the madness around the Christmas market, or folks wanting to try something new, or family outings!
M. C.
Great day out and the stewards were amazing with my stepson showing him how to balance and skate properly. Morning session is mostly families so much quieter very well priced and the little cafe is very cheap but decent....will definitely be back
E. M.
I skate here regularly and have done since I was 8, I'm now 50! Skating is a great way to keep fit as well as being exhilarating and enjoyable. It helps you unwind from work stress, clears your mind as you fly on the ice. ⛸
G. C.
An 'old school' rink.
Not all of the facilities of a modern rink, but it's a cool old building with a decent rink.
The skating teachers /coaches are great - they teach adults and kids, from beginners to advanced.
T. E.
Great open day to bring my daughter. Time on the ice, skate hire and exhibitions by the figure skaters and ice hockey teams. All staff were very friendly and helpful.
A. H.
Reading my book at the side of the ice rink was the best outing ever. My one friend (and some guy I just met called Matt), however, had a miserable time on the ice. Can't wait to visit again! Would highly recommend.
C. B.
I went for the ice hockey, as I did back in the 90s, so can only comment from a hockey fans view. Very little has changed. Murrayfield is a proper old school hockey rink. Unfortunately, this means it could do with some updating. The sound system is not particularly clear and the seats appear to be the same ones that were there when Tony Hand was in his pomp. Be aware that if you buy silver rather than gold tickets, your view of certain parts of the rink will be restricted. It's definitely worth the extra couple of quid to sit in the front 4 rows. Having said all that, the cafe is good value and the stovies are delicious. Proper food to warm your cockles while you're there. I really do like the place but it does need some money spending on it. It's one of the few proper hockey rinks left and for that and the stovies, it's worth a visit.
N. M.
Great time had at the Saturday night disco skating. Good value and entertainment. Love to go back to see an actual ice hockey game now
B. L.
Good coaching and a really fun activity. Will come again for sure!
W. A.
I have been here a few times now for ice skating and to watch hockey games. They hold a number of different ice skating events throughout the week, from beginners lessons to ice skating discos which caters to anyone who want to try going out on the ice. I went to one of the disco events last year and though it was well set up but was definitely aimed at 14-17 year olds and felt very out of place. The main downfall of this ice rink is that is it very outdated and could do with a major overhaul, the seats are old, wooden and uncomfortable and the food/drink facilities could definitely use a change and improvement.
E. V.
murrayfield ice rink is a very important part of my life, i've been skating there since young and will always think of it as a second home
B. A. G.
Attended the public skate. Really helpful staff and friendly environment. Only thing to note is that they dont have any penguins available for children during the public skate.
A. O.
Big ice rink, wasn't busy when we went so could really enjoy and the disco night are so much fun. Good exercises also. Definitely recommend
J. R.
I first came here when I was 9. Everything was awesome and I had a proper good time.
I then returned 7 years later to find that absolutely nothing had changed. Ok, so that's a bit of a lie. Stuff has decayed and everything feels very, very old and unloved. It is in desperate need of a makeover.
The equipment is pretty old too but once you're on the ice you tend to forget about it. The rink itself is pretty big but it's best to avoid weekends unless you want to bulldoze into a mass of tiny humans.
It's also home to the Edinburgh Capitals. An awesome ice hockey team that is in desperate need of some new supporters but I have a sneaky feeling that until everything gets a makeover, the numbers will continue to dwindle.
S. K.
Quick and easy to try ice skating even if you're a first timer. No membership required. Loved the experience here!
E. R.
Here weekly for my children's ice skating lessons, the ice has just been melted down and re done so is in great condition, skates available for hire and open skating sessions times are posted online, very large car park with marked out disabled bays, cafe available but isn't open when I'm in on a Wed pm
c. D.
Great art deco building, went for Scottish cup hockey weekend. Seats are not the most comfortable and much colder than other rinks, still good history in this building
S. K.
4 stars for the ice rink and Coaches here. Great for families, classes for learners and even a disco night. Reasonable prices for loads of fun.
S. S.
Loved my first experience here, the staff were so helpful and easy to talk to, I started my stay in Edinburgh here and finished it here as it was so great. Thank you to the staff who made my first skate amazing and fun.
D. H.
I first came here when I was about14 years old in the late '50s. I stopped coming in 1964 due to the splendid distractions of the '60s but came back 40 years later in 2004. Very little had changed. The café used to be where the skate hire is now. They no longer use a landrover dragging a plane to resurface the ice. Some of us, using the tools provided, would shove the resultant snow into open drains at the edge of the ice.
Those are about the only changes I noticed after a 40 year gap. I've added another star because although it's in a bit of a time warp, there's no need for it to change. The ice is generally good and they do the best they can musically within the limits imposed by a 1GB SD card. The speaker system gives good sound quality.
E. B.
It feels like a well loved place with a lot
of history.
When you're on the ice its grand. The music, the friendly staff who pick you up when you fall or the Edinburgh Capitals IceHockey team entertaining on the ice.
I am so glad that it's managed to stay open and I think it's a valuable facility to have in a city.
It would be fantastic if folks continue to support it and if they are able to get some large investment to modernise the place, that'd be grand.
M. S.
This place is ridiculously old fashioned, but that's part of its charm. The rink itself is big and well maintained, and they run cheap group classes on Sundays that are great value.
1.
Not been here in over a decade, good to see not much has changed and the price is still reasonable, only downside is the quality of the hire skates as they are a bit uncomfortable
K. M.
Reasonable prices and decent facilities, can't really complain. Minus one star for requiring the public to wait outdoors before skating sessions, I'm not sure why they do that.
K. F.
Its great been going there when I was about five and I still go today just super fun should go I would rather go here than any other ice rink but the time could be longer and I’m really good now should take ur kids and other family members every one is nice sometime want to help ur children bc even I’ve help kids learn to skate just very fun 😁
K. M. X.
Great little rink for skating usually quite open and bare so plenty of room to skate, also home to the Murrayfeild racers ice hockey team worth a visit
T. M.
Always great fun pie are awesome hockey brilliant great for £10 kids free 2hour of entertainment sometimes you get a fight
A. L.
Good ice rink. Went for a family Saturday morning fun on the ice. Was enjoyed by all. Sometimes there are matches on so check the website before you go
J. M.
Good family fun. Seems safe and staff are on the ice at all times to maintain order. Coffee always available.
J. S.
Great fun, helpful staff. The boots are awful and painful and the centre needs a bit of TLC. A good place to visit for family fun.
I. L.
Only not 5 stars cos the skates werent the most comfortable things when you were 1 pair of socks.
D. M.
Great place and the only ice rink I know of in Edinburgh only down side is I think it needs updated! Ie the toilets and the decor and the building itself needs a paint job.
V. T.
So much fun, good music.
J. T.
Seats are incredibly up comfortable and choice of food isn't great either apart from that's nice rink to watch ice hockey
e. w.
an amazing place to practise ice skating, the staff are very supportive and helpful.
E. L.
Amazing rink , load of fun for all ages at all times
T. H.
Very friendly stewards on the ice to make sure everyone's okay, and to help people learn new moves. Highly recommended.
G. M.
Good family atmosphere, friendly staff, on-ice stewards and coaches to help if you fall or need a little encouragement to get going.
L. Y.
I'd recommend going during one of the Ice Hockey groupon deals, as there's lots of people and the atmosphere is great. They also sell stovies from a little canteen window when it's busy :)
A. I.
It's my figure skating Alma Mater. There is a skating club that teaches you how to skate and ice dance, people are friendly and there are very good coaches. There are sessions for ice hockey and a curling rink nearby.
M. W.
great place, bacon rolls yum, staff friendly, prices affordable, downside no penguins for younger children to hold on.
H. M.
Great place to experience ice skating. You might even get to see some live figure skating :D
T. L.
Only dance/figure skates available (no hockey skates) but good ice surface and regulation size. I'd go again.
M. A.
Ice time is super limited but the ice itself is good. Cafe hardly open so cold for spectators. It's dated but a quaint little rink
M. T.
Been here for decades and always a great time . Skates are for hire and there are lessons available. All housed in an art deco building
J. O.
Funy times with family
P. S.
Ice rink is old. I mean really old but you won't find a more family friendly atmosphere during ice hockey anywhere in Scotland.
V. N.
Good old rink. Old style seats good atmosphere but really cold compared to other rinks.
K. L.
We went here on date night... I smashed my knee to bits falling on the ice hahahahaha still loved it and still went back for more and will continue to go back
P. L.
Amazing day out for staff are fantastic
T. H.
Very friendly stewards on the ice to make sure everyone's okay, and to help people learn new moves. Highly recommended.

J. F.
There's nothing like sitting in an old rink surrounded by history and 800 other hockey fans watching the sport you love.
K. D.
Very run down and is desperately in need of makeover however it's the only ice rink for miles.
R. A.
Great rink, skated here for a few years now! Just wish there was some kind of hockey for beginners slot!
K. M.
Reasonably priced sessions and skate hire, steward and regulars are really friendly and give you tips to help you improve
C. M.
Pretty good ice rink that's fairly central to town and at reasonable prices, always seems to be a bit busy when i go
J. M.
If you are a keen skater there,s no where better, my grandaughter loves it and she gives it five stars
K. F.
Bit of a dump. Loos yuk. Cafe feels hundreds of years old. Skating ok. Spectator bit ok
J. B.
This place hasn't changed in 30 years! Skate hire, vending machines when the cafe is closed. Cheap day out
J. F.
There's nothing like sitting in an old rink surrounded by history and 800 other hockey fans watching the sport you love.
C.
Alright rink. Seats are old and worn but apart from that it is generally good.
T. C.
Not been there for 40 years but was fantastic then.
