Reviews of Blackford Quarry

Interesting disused quarry, sometimes frequented by climbers. One of those places you see and wonder why and when did that happen.
I believe the quarry was used between 1826 and 1875 for road building material. To the east is a larger cut now partly infilled and planted with trees. Its more easily distinguished looking from the Braids acrosss the Glen. The lower entry point is used by the council, so watch out for lorries if your walking in from the east along Blackford Glen road.
Nearby and of geological and historical interest is Agassiz Rock, a quarry-like feature, which was the first evidence of the action of glaciers to be found in Scotland. In 1840 Swiss geologist Louis Agassiz argued that the cuts and scrapes had been made by ice. He also stated that the shape of Edinburgh Castle's rock and the Royal Mile had been formed by ice sheet activity.

Great place for a relaxing walk, many spots away from residential nuisance.
