Reviews of Primal Gym
C. P.
Perfect introduction to exercising with weights.
The team are all very welcoming and friendly. Steve, my coach was always available to answer any questions I would have about the training plan, by dropping him a text message.
The small group personal training sessions are perfect for keeping you motivated and the conditioning section at the end is really fun - they make it unique each time to keep it interesting.
Each coach brings their individuality and expertise to work so there’s always someone who can help you with whatever questions you may have.
I was previously apprehensive about using any barbells in the gym with weight plates, however you quickly become comfortable using the equipment after a few sessions.
If you’re thinking of doing the SGPT trial with primal, I would recommend it 100% - you won’t regret it :)

Since the moment I entered the Primal gym I felt 100% welcomed & at ease. The entire team is mega friendly & supportive in helping you reach your goals. My coach Steve has been awesome. I was relatively new to strength training and he has been so patient with me learning what I enjoy but also what works around my back pain. With Steve’s help I’ve gone from having little enjoyment in training to really building a routine that works for me. I’ve never felt stronger or more empowered. Thanks Steve & Team Primal 💪🏼 💙.

Just completed my month long SGPT trial at Primal Gym, Leeds Dock. My initial assessment was thorough and so the programme devised for me is a great fit. I have put off joining a gym for too long, at 57, overweight and unfit I had a list of reasons why I would hate a gym environment but the coaches and the small group I’m working with are lovely and I quickly felt comfortable. The coaches are determined that I develop good technique and make progress, they share information, so whichever class I choose I get a consistent approach. Steve my coach holds regular reviews and I have been pleased, surprised and motivated by my progress. Steve has the patience of a saint, when I forget what he told me in the last session, or 5 mins ago, or think I can’t do something, he keeps me right with a smile. His regular messages, real ones not standard auto messages, are a great support as I struggle to make the necessary changes to my eating habits, already I’m sleeping better and losing weight. And as I signed up for a six month contract it’s FREE!

Joining Primal is the best thing I ever did. To say it changed my life is no exaggeration.
Since I joined, I've done things I'd never dreamed of. I've been part of the winning dragon boat racing team at the Leeds Waterfront Festival, I've pushed 360kg on a prowler, and I even pulled an 8½ tonne truck by myself!
I'd never been a member of a gym for longer than 6 months before I found Primal. I hated running, I didn't know what to do with a weight rack, and quite frankly I felt intimidated and out of my depth.
The coaches at Primal are absolute superstars, they worked with me to build my confidence, encouraged me to try new things, and were always there celebrating alongside my achievements or to give me a boost when I needed it.
The classes are great fun, small sizes so you get to know the people you're training with, collaborative and always with games and challenges to keep it interesting. I've made friends for life in the classes, which is a fab boost if you're new to the area.
I also joined the SGPT sessions, which I would highly recommend to anyone. You get a personalised workout programme catered to your own strengths and weaknesses (I have hypermobility and all my exercises took this into account, and actually caused my day-to day issues to all but disappear). You also get nutritional advice, as well as help with lifestyle, relaxation and sleep, so it's so much more than your standard workout plan.
I always thought that if I'd seen one gym, I'd seen them all. Rows of treadmills and cross trainers, mirrors on every conceivable surface, and a tiny weights area where if I was lucky I might be able to sneak in before being stared away by the resident gym bros, back to the safety of the "ladies" weights.
Primal is the complete opposite of this. There's not a single treadmill in the building, instead there are more kettlebells and weights than I'd ever seen in one place before, a full boxing ring and bag area, TRX machines spanning the length of the room and not to mention the numerous lifting platforms and benches.
If you want a cheap bog-standard cardio mill, Primal is probably not the right fit. If you're looking for some help getting started, some encouragement in your journey, in working out for the fun of it, or to push yourself to see what you can do, this is the place for you.

Have been doing SGPT for a little over a month now. Great place. Clean (which is important in Covid times), friendly and helpful trainers that tailor your program to your needs and goals, never had a problem with a full class or lack of/broke equipment, and lots of variation in classes and in my program to keep things interesting and fun. I've personally seen great results and I'm excited to stick with it. :)
Update: Still here for well over a year, and love it. A positive environment with great coaches that check on you throughout the week and a workout plan that focuses on my goals.

SPT sessions are motivating and beginner-friendly. The staff are professional, friendly and supportive. I'd like to say thanks, especially to Hector and Darren. They analysed my back problem, designed a personalised plan to help me, and we had regular catch-ups talking about my health and progress. My back pain was greatly relieved after training for 5-6 weeks. My experience in this gym has been absolutely great.

But with Primal Gym minutes away from home I decided to give it a go. With the help of the professional staff, I’ve managed to keep myself motivated and focused on achieving my goals. But more than getting fitter, I discovered an environment with friendly people and that makes my workouts much better.

The best gym ever! Classes at Primal gym are great and there are fantastic coaches. You are followed with monthly reviews to keep track of your progress and define objectives. And you can always count on some help even if you are training “solo”.
After 5 years of being a member, it feels more like family than a normal gym. During the lockdown the gym has offered online classes via Zoom everyday of the week and this has kept me sane whilst it guided me in some home workout to keep training even if the gym was closed.
Great people, always available and always listening to members feedback.
N. M.
Awesome gym.
Staff are super friendly and the classes significantly improved my fitness and sports performance. As well as being great fun!
It has been so useful during the Covid restrictions as it was great to be part the group sessions in a safe environment.
I’ve never went to the gym so consistently and that was down to how varied and enjoyable the sessions were.
A shame I had to leave Primal as I was returning home to Ireland but I’ll definitely be back when I come back to Leeds.
C. M.
I’ve been coming to Primal for around 4 years now and I can’t fault it. There’s a great variety of classes, some of which I never thought I’d be interested in such as boxing and calisthenics but after giving them a try I really enjoy them. The class sizes are quite small so you get good attention from the coach and also as they’re small you get to know others in the class so the gym also has a social feel to it too. Whenever I’ve had specific goals I chat this through with one of the coaches and they regularly check in with me to see how things are going which I’ve never had at other gyms. All in all, this is a great gym.
S. B.
It's been great getting back to Primal post lockdown. I didn't realise how much I'd missed it! Whilst I enjoyed the online classes throughout lockdown, it feels great to be working out with others and using weights again. Just getting out of the house in the mornings and exercising has been fantastic for my wellbeing. The coaches have been really supportive as well by ensuring we ease ourselves back into in-person training and the team seems to be very diligent with the COVID health and safety measures. Between reduced class sizes, sanitisation of equipment and checking temperatures at the door, I feel very safe while exercising at the gym. Both the coaches and other members are giving each other space - it's very respectful and so nice to know we're all in this together. To anyone who's feeling a bit anxious about returning I'd say give it a try and head in! You don't realise how much you've miss working out until you get back to it.
S. T.
Primal Staff, congratulations for bringing the gym home during this pandemic.
Although I really miss coming to the gym and seeing people and coaches face2face, I would really like the online classes to be continued after lockdown for many reasons:
1. I am a carer so I might feel insecure coming back to the gym straight away
2. I can train from my holiday destination as I will have my gym always with me!
3. Even if I change countries, I still won't need to change my favourite gym
4. I can have more time with my family as commuting is reduced
5. I can be a good role model for my toddler who sees me exercising every day
6. If I don't have time to change clothes, I can have camera off and train in my pyjamas!!
Cheers guys xx You've done a great job! You are all a great team!
Please tell me you will never stop the online classes :)))
C. P.
I am proud so say I am one of the first members of Primal gym . Primal ethos and professionalism is second to none. There are gyms and there ARE gyms! I’m happy to be part of the the primal tribe . The range of online classes during lockdown were excellent . I lost my motivation during the last few months and Oliver went that extra mile, to reel me back in, to find the root cause , discuss nutrition and give me some motivational tips. I truly believe the big commercial gyms would not CARE about it’s tribe like primal does. So glad the doors are opening as I know as soon as I walk in, I will be greeted by my name and it will feel like home . Thanks PRIMAL for being you and being awesome 🙌🏼
J. L.
I have been a member of Primal for the last 2 years and I couldn’t be happier with the results that I’ve achieved. It would be fair to say that I wasn’t one of those overnight success stories. Mine has been a slow and steady change over that time; I’ve made consistent progress. To do this, I’ve need to turn up, try approaches and adapt as I’ve found what works and what doesn’t for me. The team at Primal has been instrumental in making this happen.
First and foremost, the team work hard to make Primal a welcoming and fun place to be, which has made me want to keep going even when I couldn’t see the progress. Secondly, the coaches have made an effort to get to know me and my strengths and weaknesses. The SGPT sessions I’m in often involve a conversation about how I’m feeling mentally as well as physically and based on the outcome, the coaches often make suggested changes to reflect how I’m feeling. This can be to push myself harder, but is often counselling me to take a step back. The monthly check-ins are invaluable for ensuring that I key an eye on the bigger goal.
Like many people, I’ve been to loads of the gyms over the years, but no where comes close to Primal. I turn 40 this year and I’m the fittest, strongest and healthiest I’ve ever been. This is completely down to the team at Primal.
M. K.
If you're looking for treadmills and Dutch techno music, keep walking. If, however, you want to become part of an amazing community that lifts you up and motivates you even when you'd prefer vegging out on the couch with a tub of Ben and Jerry's, then this is the place.
The coaches... where do I even start? Friendly, attentive, literally people I loved getting drinks with after a workout! The classes are amazingly varied, from pilates to boxing (if you like your quads, DO NOT DO BOXING CONDITIONING WITH DARREN - consider yourself warned).
All in all, Primal was a family when I needed one most. New town, new people, yet they made me feel welcome and as if among long-time friends.
TL;DR - if you want to get fit whilst having fun, this is the place for you. I love you Primal!
B. C.
I'm so glad to be back at Primal after lockdown! I was going to the gym 4 or 5 times a week before, so it was strange going months without visiting. Although I kept myself ticking over with bike rides and running, living in an apartment makes it hard to do anything like circuits, so it's good to be able use a range of equipment again and all the boxing bags.
I feel like Primal has done everything they can in terms of health & safety post lockdown. From my personal experience all the measures that could have been put in place to protect the members, have been. Primal has an advantage to other gyms as it’s not solely focused on weight machines or treadmills where there tends to be lots of waiting around & congregating. The fact that it's quite open & also a well managed gym means you can feel safe whilst exercising. To anyone who's feeling a bit anxious about getting back to the gym, I would say - come & check it out to see what has been put in place!
N. G.
We have been a member since 3 years and this is a very good gym. Coaches are professional, super friendly and very encouraging. If you are looking to make progress, improve yourselves and meet great people this is the right place to come. This is not like standard gyms. We will highly recommend this place to anyone.
M. M.
Joining Primal has been one of the best decisions I have ever made! Warm welcome from the staff, professional Coaches, friendly atmosphere & fun classes are just a few to mention. I have done PT sessions with Darren & his knowledge, patience & wisdom are priceless, & I felt extremely grateful to have an amazing Coach like him! I can not recommend Primal highly enough!
A.
I've deeply enjoyed my every visit at Primal since February. Wish they had another place where I'm moving now, because it's unlike any other gym! A great attention to detail and technical knowledge on the part of the trainers, coupled with a brilliant atmosphere guaranteed by fun people to work out with, make this one of my favourite spots in Leeds. They've got something for everyone - you can join classes or work out on your own, whatever your fancy. In fact, I used to HATE classes, and ended up going to my club twice a week because it was so much fun! The space is also great, with lots of good equipment and natural light. Highly recommended!
M. W.
Literally the best gym in the world! Amazing support from all the coaches! They genuinely want you to succeed and will help you achieve your goals... Friendly supportive atmosphere. Trust me, you won't miss the boring treadmills. I think it's great value for money, it's worth every penny. I never thought I'd make any progress from previous gym experiences but I'm literally the fittest I've ever been! You'd be daft not to join up... Going to the gym is no longer a chore and I look forward to my classes.

So my journey with primal...where to begin? So I started on their TTP programme (which for those looking to get back into the gym, haven’t been to a gym before or just want to lose some weight I’d highly recommend!). That programme helped me to lose -17kg, something I’d never done before. Was I nervous about going to a gym where there’s platforms and weight lifters? Yes, who wouldn’t be after not going to the gym for so long however primal isn’t like that. They make you feel so welcome, comfortable and like you’re part of the family. If an exercise is too hard or you have an injury there’s always an alternative and they never make you feel like uncomfortable or an inconvenience.
I then ruptured my ACL and tore my meniscus playing netball. I thought all my hard work would go to waste and that was it but primal didn’t let that happen and focussed me onto my pre-hab. My coach created a programme designed specifically to get me strong for surgery, which being signed off 7 months post ACL just shows how much it all paid off. I couldn’t have done that without the help of my coach at primal.
When lockdown hit I was one of those people who went into meltdown. What’s was I going to do now the gyms are closed? Primal came through though. Online classes (I hate press-ups now!), zoom catchups, text check-ins from my coach throughout the week and outdoor classes with some equipment when it was allowed. Safe to say I’ve cleaned more gym equipment recently than I have done in my gym life! But needs must. It’s just been nice seeing everyone and seeing how we’ve all pulled together.
The people and coaches at primal are like no other. If you’re looking for that all round coaching experience primal is where you need to go. No judgment, great coaches, great people (myself included) and a safe space for all types of gym goers...oh and what seems to be a therapy session when you just don’t feel great!
Can’t wait to get back tomorrow to see what the guys and gals have done!

Having never really engaged with the gym, I was hesitant at first at joining the small group PT sessions at Primal. After 4 weeks, 12 PT sessions and achieving the goals I'd set out to hit, I can now say that I actually enjoy going to the gym and is a part of my day that I look forward to. What makes Primal different is the human connection the staff have with every person who walks through the door. They listen, are understanding and push you in the ways that work for you personally. The coaches on SGPT are incredibly passionate about what they do - I've had the pleasure of mostly working with Ollie who has a brilliant way of explaining what to do in a way I understand, adapts based on my ability and, nearly more importantly than anything, has the loveliest and best dog.
D. M.
Fantastic gym - I have been a member of this gym for 3 months now and love heading down there for my workouts. I have tried many of the different classes and love the feeling. Being new to the city the gym feels very welcoming and straight away i was invited to join in the yearly Dragon Boat experience which was amazing fun. The instructors always seem to know your name and the gym offers loads of tips to help you progress. The tracking of your progress and the tips they give on potential body mechanics issues make you feel they are also invested in you. For me I love the boxing classes which are great workout and there are technical classes for boxing/martial arts. I can really see myself progressing further over the coming year and look forward to it.
E. L.
I’ve just finished Primal’s three month Total Transformation Program and am delighted with my results!
As soon as I took advantage of my free week at Primal I knew it was a really special place. I’ve literally never known a gym like it and I’ve been a member of a fair few over the years!! The coaches are world class, really know their stuff and above all, actually care. Their people skills are as excellent as their knowledge and they’ll go out of their way to help you achieve your goals. You won’t see bad form being ignored in this gym!
Primal is a real community and I’m incredibly grateful and proud to be part of it ❤️

I've found Primal to an incredible gym, and certainly the best in Leeds. The facilities are great but the main thing is the level of personal attention you get from each of the trainers at the gym. They are all extremely friendly and keen to hear how you're progressing; always ready to offer any helpful suggestions to keep you improving. As personal trainers they are incredible, there are so many classes, each with a smallish number of people (4-12 ish) which means the trainers can really get to know what works for you and encourage you. It's been one of the few gym's to keep me happy to come in month after month!
T. L.
The best thing about Primal is the coaches. They're all awesome - always friendly, encouraging, and helpful. No matter what your goal is, there is a class or club right up your alley. They're all really well designed, so it takes the stress out of planning your workout. Primal is a bit more expensive than some other gyms, but when you realise that there is no magic pill and you have to work hard to achieve your fitness goals, you'll at least want to have fun along the way - and you'll definately get that at Primal.
A. B.
Best gym I have ever joined (and I've been to alot). Caring and knowledgeable trainers, fun and functional training with a huge range of equipment. Great place to start or continue your fitness journey.
C. S.
Joining Primal has been the best thing I've ever done for my health. I'd tried 'normal' gyms in the past but ended up sitting on bike and watching 'Come Dine With Me' whilst halfheartedly peddling (and it's safe to say it did nothing for my health or well being).
When I joined Primal, I immediately felt welcome and could see that this wasn't just another gym (no bikes with TVs!). Every single member of staff is passionate about their profession and will go above and beyond in order to help you achieve your goals.
My goal was weight loss, but my time at Primal has opened up a whole new world of fitness. I understand my body and can achieve things I never thought possible. The boxing classes are amazing and who knew lifting weights could be so much fun! I've lost weight, feel incredible and look forward to going to the gym.
The members make it feel like you're working out with friends and when I've struggled they've been there to cheer me on and encourage me. The workouts are tough, but when I put on my high-waist skirts and sleeveless tops, the struggle is totally worth it! I cannot put into words how grateful I am to all the staff and fellow members, but thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
N. S.
Love Primal Gym, the coaches and the classes are amazing, they adapt the workouts based on your physical ability and everyone’s unique on the gym. You never feel left out.
Come and try for yourself!
Best gym I’ve ever been 5/5 ;)
S. S.
Excellent gym. You get results. The group sessions are intense and you might want to curse out while doing them, but the moment you're done, you get a big sense of satisfaction and want to go again!
The trainers are skilled and dedicated. They're not trying to sell you services. Instead during regular catch ups, they provide you with guidance towards your goals, rather than you doing your own random stuff and hoping for a result.
These two things, effective small group sessions, and regular touch points and guidance towards a goal, make it the best gym I've been a member of.
It is not your usual gym with rows of machines and treadmills, but once you get into it, you see why that makes sense, and the range of kit its got are the best for what it is.
One final consideration is price. It is a lot more expensive than Pure Gym and the like. I personally find it steep but see the value. More expensive than this, and I may have to reconsider, for now though I'm ok with the value, especially if you sign up for 12 months.
5/5 overall.
M. B.
This is how a Gym should really be... There is everything you need to train well, train alone, train with others, gain results. The classes and clubs are great too and keep things fresh and fun whilst being hard work!!!
Having become bored of going to the Gym, Primal has rejuvenated my fitness, health and well-being. My choices of nutrition have also Changed as a result of the positive influence, and that was my choice not as a necessity which makes it lasting...
J. M.
I am coming to the end of a free week trial at Primal Gym and I've been so impressed. All the staff and trainers are really friendly and encouraging and the other people at the gym are nice too, with a good sense of camaraderie in classes. There is a big range of classes, including yoga, which is great and there is a cute dog to pet and sliced fruit to grab on your way out! I will be signing up at the end of the trial, and can benefit from their brilliant student discount, thanks Primal Gym!
P. G.
Just to say a big thank you to team Primal! The team, classes, ambience- everything about the gym is great. I always feel motivated to go to the gym because of the amazing classes which are fun as well as being challenging! Having worked with all coaches; Vanessa, Costas, Steve, Matt, Ollie, Elliot & Jim- I must say, they’re all perfect at their job. I feel stronger than ever. During the member catch-ups, Ollie has paid close attention to each aspect including the training, diet, sleep which is really helpful. Thanks Ollie for your personalized expert advice and setting a new goal each month which pushes me to work harder each time- I will def remember to drink loads of water and not count tea/coffee in the amount of intake/day 😄 ! Thumbs up to the gym!
K. P.
I signed up last August for PT sessions and from the start it has been great. The initial assessments felt really thorough and they listened to everything I was looking to get out of training.
I was initially a bit nervous as I hadn’t done any strength training before. All the staff are super friendly though and always make time to say hi and have a quick chat! It’s got a real family feel to the place.
Jim has been a great coach! He’s really good at encouraging me to keep progressing and challenging myself and I look forward to my sessions every week. It’s great to see the progress I’ve made in such a short time.
R. S.
Most enjoyable gym I've ever been signed to, I was initially nervous to join in with the classes thought people would be looking at my lack of fitness etc but there's a really relaxed friendly vibe... with a competitive edge when you get there! Otherwise it's really clean and despite it's 'primal' approach to exercising is full of nifty gadgets and tech forward equipment in changing rooms and so on.
A. H.
Personal training at Primal has been worth every penny; I feel like I've made genuine long lasting progress.
I'm not a 'gym' kind of person, but kickboxing training with Jim is something I genuinely enjoy and look forward to!
On top of that, all the coaches at Primal are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic - which combine to make a great atmosphere.
J.
Generally speaking, there's not much to dislike about Primal - it's a decent gym with a real sense of community, everyone is really friendly and the classes are fun and engaging. They have a good range of equipment and definitely cater to the 'serious' gym goer, making sure you have set goals, holding monthly competitions and getting your progress recorded.
I only have two negatives:
1) The (extremely) high price tag of £65 per month. Compared to competing gyms in the area, I don't feel you get a lot for your money and in my opinion it doesn't measure up - I'm now at a new gym paying around half of Primal's monthly membership, and I get similar classes, pool access and body progress tests just the same - so struggling to see how their price is justified!
2) The PT groups. They have small PT groups which you can purchase on top of your membership(!!), which can occupy large sections of the gym floor during peak times - this can get annoying if you were hoping to get on a piece of equipment then find they are using it as part of their circuit, especially if no-one is actually using it at that moment. At peak times the gym is already busy enough without this.
To summarise - I'm glad I tried it out, Primal definitely helped me loose weight and become comfortable working out after previously giving up on the gym! If you can afford it and can commit to going more than a few times a week, it might well be worth it for you - it just wasn't for me in the end!

When I first attended Primal, I must admit I was concerned with the lack of running machines as that’s what I was used to, but from my first class, I haven’t looked back! All of the staff have been excellent in helping me achieve the results that I set out achieve. In 3 months I have lost 6kg in weight, whilst increasing muscle mass by over 3kg. My body fat percentage has reduced from 21.6% to 10.7% and I feel much fitter and healthier. This is easily the best gym I have ever joined and my results back this up.
E. B.
Without doubt the best gym I have ever been to. The classes suit my needs perfectly and the trainers are always very friendly and helpful. Before I joined Primal I never knew how fun exercise could be :)
L. A.
So excited the doors have reopened after lock down, love this gym, the staff and the behind the scenes team. Have been coming here for over 3 years and have always achieved amazing results with their help and advice. so looking forward to Monday!
T. P.
Best gym I have trained at (have been to many including the big brands). It just has a great feel and the trainers are excellent. I have seen better results training at Primal than any other in the past! Would definitely recommend
L. A.
I joined Primal’s 28 Day Fat Loss Challenge after being recommended by a friend and I have to say I was shocked with my results! The food guide I was given was really useful, I loved cooking with fresh ingredients and experimenting in the kitchen. The classes are great and feel personal. The instructors acknowledge you and discuss how things are going. It’s always fun and never a chore. I would highly recommend Primal to everyone and will be carrying on with the lifestyle change to stay healthy!
M. P.
I hated gyms and did very little exercise before I went for the Primal Gym 1 week trial. 6 months later, I am fitter, leaner, stronger, healthier and ultimately feeling better and happier. I LOVE this place, the classes and instructors.

I have been a member of Primal for just over 1 year and it’s not an exaggeration to say that the team there have had a major positive impact on my training approach and life. Primal is the best gym in Leeds, and if you want to be healthy, educated and develop actual fitness it will be a great fit for you.
Having worked in Leeds for over 15 years, I have been a member of most gyms from budget to premium and everything in between. As my training education has increased, I began to realise that the static machine industry method of targeted muscle training for bigger arms and tighter t-shirts wasn’t for me.
As an alternative I pursued cross-fit for a number of years and took great benefit from all over body functional training, but became bored and wanted to learn other methods for keeping fit and broadening my fitness horizons.
I found primal and they ticked all the right boxes at the right time with a pricing model that felt fair and represented value for money.
The classes at Primal are varied and range from cardio HIIT training to specialised clubs with focus on skills for boxing, kettlebells and calisthenics to mention but a few. I was hooked early with boxing and calisthenics literally turned me upside down, which led me to take up 1:1 personal training with Jim, who is as nice as he is patient and muscular.
Jim’s guidance and expert tuition have advanced my physical development, technical capability and overall fitness education rapidly.
My wife has recently joined the Primal Total Transformation Programme (TTP) after having two lovely demanding children, and she is seeing managed weight loss through the healthy eating program provided by Primal along with increased levels of fitness. Most importantly her confidence is growing with each visit, and she feels supported and can see the results that matter to her.
If you want to become a member of a fitness community with expert guidance from people that care about your results, join Primal. The team there will help reveal the best version of you.
Hope to see you there!

I had given up on gyms and personal trainers until I stumbled across Primal Gym. I initially went to enquire about their infra-red sauna as I was in much need of detoxing and re-energising. However, I had a free assessment and was shown the facilities and I felt a real positive and exciting vibe from the place. The staff at the gym were so pleasant and I found the clientele were from a variety of backgrounds (age, gender, experience), which made me feel at ease. After the free detailed assessment, I decided to sign up to Personal Training and have lost almost a stone in 7 weeks, but more importantly I feel so much better in myself, I have more energy, improved self esteem and overall my general well being has dramatically improved. This might sound a bit cheesy, but I can genuinely say that my experience at Primal Gym has really made a difference to my life and being a single mum of a 2 year old has also drastically changed my time with my child too, as I do so much more with him and that for me is priceless.. My advice would be to go in for chat and give it a go - you have nothing to lose but a lot to gain!

I've been a member of Primal Gym, Leeds Dock, now for over 2 1/2 years, and that means a lot.
Before I had signed up to at least 1/2 dozen other well know gyms, started going enthusiastically, only for my attendance to tail off after a couple of months and then stop altogether and cancelling my membership at the end of the contract.
But not at Primal Gym! It's different to other gyms in so many great ways! Its staff and members, quickly became my friends, and the variety of classes, programs and membership types, make it almost addictive, I just kept going back, more and more. They are so good at encouraging you to do your best and guiding you towards your dream goals.
I signed up to a 3 month Total Transformation course, a month each of Fat loss, Muscle toning and then building lean muscle.
I lost 11.6kg of fat and gained over 3kg of muscle on this Primal gym, Total Transformation Project.
I loved how everybody on the course got together in a common sense of purpose, supporting & encouraging each other in the classes and on the Facebook group.
I was also surprised by how enjoyable the recipes in their own Primal gym cook book were - this was probably one of the most important reasons for my success, as it helped my morale so much. I'm not sure how motivated I would have been to work hard towards my goal, if I hadn’t known there was a nice meal to look forward to!
Also, the classes really worked!! They felt hard at first but as my body adapted & they got easier as I got fitter. I was selected as joint "best transformation" at the end of the course, and my transformation photos are on display as proof!
I have now progressed onto another programme, Muscle Mass building, and in the first 6 weeks have lost another 4kg of fat and gained another 3kg of muscle. I'm gobsmacked at what I've achieved, they've really changed the mind of a doubter.
It really works, if you really want to make a positive healthy change, and have the motivation and will to do what they will teach you, anyone can do it. Give it a try.

Excellent gym, friendly, approachable and knowledgeable staff/trainers, interesting/fun classes, clean facilities and quality equipment.
Used to be a member when I lived in Leeds.
I wish there was something like this in Newcastle. I've yet to find a single gym up here with a decent squat rack.

Primal was great from the start - a super friendly group of trainers creates a great atmosphere at the gym and helps with the motivation to keep going. A detailed review and then personalised ongoing rehabilitation plan with Darren to help with hip pain I'd had for years has left me 6 months later getting stronger and hardly any pain. So glad I signed up, thanks guys!!

Probably the best Gym I have been too.
It may sound expensive at first, but considering the amount you get, it is worth it. Fitness knowledge and advice, variety of classes, different clubs (I go for the boxing club 3 times a week, that alone would cost more in than the monthly membership fee in another Gym) and FUN. Got me going again when I was less committed on my fitness so 5 stars for me without a doubt..

I have recently left Primal after being a member for a fair few years. The last two I've been doing the SGPT under the watchful eye of Coach Cuthbert! I went from a super lazy guy that wouldn't do anything to take care of themselves to someone that couldn't wait to get to the gym, spend time with everyone, and put in the hard work! If I wasn't moving house (delayed... thanks Covid) I would still be a member, and I would be gearing up for my first session back (where I would completely fuss Coach Peppa).
I miss you all, and wish you all nothing but success for the future!

Having tried-out most of the gyms in Leeds city centre, Primal struck me as being a bit different instantly. They offer a weeks trial free of charge, during which you have a detailed consultation with one of their coaches & a functional movement test (much less scary than it sounds!). The atmosphere and set up at Primal is completely different to other gyms as are the classes and coaches. Gone are the muscle bound men staring into mirrors and pieces of equipment you have no idea how to use. In their place are a range of classes focussing on different areas of training and a supportive community based membership (people actually talk to each other). After 3 months I was so hooked that I took part in one of Primal’s 3 month transformation programmes which focuses on diet & fat loss/muscle building classes. It was absolutely fantastic and with Primal’s help & support I managed to lose 17kg of fat in 12 weeks. After 6 months of being a member at Primal, I’m fitter than I’ve ever been, I’m lighter than I’ve ever been, I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and most importantly I enjoy training more than I’ve ever done. If you’re considering trying Primal, stop thinking and just do it - you won’t regret it!
S. M. S.
Ever since I moved to Leeds I struggled to get myself physically active again. But with Primal Gym minutes away from home I decided to give it a go. With the help of the professional staff, I’ve managed to keep myself motivated and focused on achieving my goals. But more than getting fitter, I discovered an environment with friendly people and that makes my workouts much better.

An excellent gym!
Introductory Week Pass: 5*
Every gym should do this! It provides you with a functional assessment, fitness test and introduction to the classes as well as allowing you to get a better understanding of the philosophy of the gym. Personally I was dubious when I initially signed up but after a week pass I've continued my membership for the past 6+ months!
Staff: 5*
Every single member of staff has been polite, professional, welcoming and engaging since I walked through the front door in September. What I particularly like is the community feel of the gym, with the membership being a relatively small cohort you are recognised and treated as a member/human instead of another drone in a huge conglomerate of gyms. The management are very open to feedback as well and communication is always prompt if you have a query.
Personally I cannot praise the staff enough, I have had an array of injuries since I joined and all staff seem to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of members past medical histories allowing for personal touches to exercises I've not experienced at a gym before.
Classes: 5*
Each class is 45 minutes ish in length with ample periods of warm up and cool down. All of the trainers get really involved in making sure your technique is spot on before you start to injure yourself. The classes are fun and varied with all the different trainers having the same high level of enthusiasm! I especially like the "there is never a stupid question" attitude when it comes to technique and improvement. No class ever seems to be the same and there is always words of encouragement from members and trainers alike
Facilities (Gym): 5*
I am a total novice when it comes to gyms but initially when I presented myself at the gym I was worried by the perceived lack of machinery. This impression was quickly changed when I realised how the classes and the equipment they provide means most of the traditional equipment isn't required. I have never found myself to be hunting for equipment or queuing for machines and although it does become busy (especially evenings) I never feel pressured into finishing my workout. The individual coaching for all equipment is of the highest standard.
Facilities (General): 5*
Excellent changing rooms with lockers which are secured using the membership wristbands. The facilities are always clean and tidy. Excellent waiting lobby which is ideal of you accidentally arrive 45 minutes early for a class...
Miscellaneous Good Points:
- Complementary leaving fruit!
- Occasional "pets as therapy" postworkout sessions!
- Excellent array of supplements and good quality clothing available to purchase
- NHS discount!
In conclusion if you want a gym where you are thought of as an individual member, where you're treated with respect, where constructive feedback is always available, where help is always at hand, where the traditional sounds of a gym are mixed with laughter and enjoyment then Primal Gym is an ideal place for you to exercise and, equally as important, have fun!

I have gone to gyms for many years but I feel fitter, healthier and stronger than I ever have done thanks to Primal.
SGPT has worked wonders, kept me motivated and inspired to do things I never thought possible.
I’m in the best shape I have been for years.
Thanks to the Primal team, and especially Matt
H. G.
Primal to me means so many different things: strength, fun, friendship, support & a serious ass-kicking. It’s hard to explain in a few sentences what works well, it would be easier for me to say what didn’t… nothing. My perception of ‘exercise’ has done a complete 180 in the past 13 months since I first joined Primal. I used to think keeping fit at the gym meant spending hours doing boring cardio on the treadmills- Primal proved how wrong I was. The team have shown me that exercise can be seriously fun & something you genuinely look forward to every day, as well as getting me in the best shape & strongest I’ve ever been in my life. Primal has turned me from a girl who used to run on the treadmill to a strong woman who lifts weights!
J. H.
Primal is a brilliant gym, before moving to primal I was just going through the motions at the gym and not really improving. Since joining primal I have gained the confidence to join a powerlifting club and quickly increased all my 1RM.
I recently started a powerlifting programme and have received lots of support from coach Chris who has been really motivating and offered much advice.
Primal also offers free monthly catch ups with a coach to check movement, weight, body fat and how you are progressing etc. I have mine with Ollie who has challaenged me to improve my nutrition.
The improvements made to my nutrition and powerlifting programme meant in 3 weeks I gained nearly 2kg of muscle whilst maintaining a body fat around 10%. As I weighed under 10 stone this is a massive improvement. I'm really glad I made the decision to join primal and look forward to further improvents I make.
T. H.
Awesome gym, friendly staff and members. That together create a great community atmosphere. If you want treadmills, TVs, machines and mirrors this place is not for you. However if you want results, improvement in mobility, increase in strength and endurance with lots of variety and fun whilst doing it. Then this is the place for you.

I was really gutted to leave my old gym (due to moving job it was difficult to attend the classes I loved so much. However Primal made me feel at home instantly. I had an initial review with Darren who spoke about my goals, struggles, what the gym could and could offer in terms of support. I'd done Olympic lifting at my old gym so this was of interest. I then joined Kev's class who observed, praised and gave constructive criticism for me to improve and get stronger. Emma has been amazing on a personal level. She will go out of her way and even text me on days off to see how things are going. She's helped me with my conditioning and confidence.
Then I injured my hand (not a gym related thing but the physio helped me recover!) which meant I couldn't Olympic which I loved to do. Steve took me under his wing and worked on things I could do. Him and Chris together have made me believe in myself. I push and believe in everyone else and they've made me realise I am worth it and I can achieve anything.
I then embraced the fat loss challenge and together George, Matt and Emma were incredible in class and out of class.
Overall it's an incredible supportive atmosphere and is perfect for those who hate he thought of going to a gym full of people who run on treadmills, bicep curl in the squat rack and have no idea what leg day is. Going from someone incredibly unfit, fat, weak and have zero confidence, I couldn't rate my extended family any higher!
It's a 40 mile round trip for me on a weekend and I do it without a second thought. We are all people with different goals, backgrounds and abilities. The hours and the heart the trainers put in is incredible. It's not just a job to them. So whether you are super strong or weak, super ripped, average or not. You'll be welcome and be family before the end of your session then like me, after 6 months (that's me now) you'll be part of the furniture
A. S.
AMAZING! If you struggle with back or ligament injuries, or if you would like to get back into exercise after a long period of inactivity, look no more, this is the right gym for you!
After two difficult pregnancies where my ligaments were severely affected, I tried every exercise class in the book but my pain wouldn't go away.
As a last resort, I tried Primal (at the time I wrote this review, you could get a one week free pass). In one month, I lost 10 cm of my waist, my pain had significantly decreased and now I am on the right track of getting where I want to be. It is hard to believe, I know, but it is true.
The staff are very knowledgeable without being patronising. They just get it! They understand that every person is unique. The programme is designed to slowly build up your resistance, strength and performance after taking into account your personal requirements.
It doesn't matter if you are a 20 year old student, a working mum of 2 or even a grandmother of 2. Everyone gets to exercise to their limits and see the results they want.
I can't wait to see what I can achieve with Primal's help in the next few months.
I would definitely recommend this gym as a must.
Thank you Primal Team. :)

I'm hooked on Primal. I was sceptical about joining classes at first, but they really are the best way to get the most out of Primal, offering something for all ages and sizes. A cycling accident resulted in me having two recent surgical operations, the Primal trainers have been first class, providing advice on what exercises to focus on, and importantly what to avoid. They have also offered encouragement during my rehab and turned me back on to yoga and Pilates?
Z. P.
Quite simply the best gym in Leeds and the best I have ever been to. The staff are very knowledgable, friendly, always very helpful and for those that want personal training they really do put together a bespoke programme, lots of help and ideas with diet and first of all look at correcting an functional issues that you may have. I have had 2 hips operations and have worked with Darren through re-hab I don’t know what I would have done without him and his knowledge! If you want a gym with rows and rows of cardio machines then this isn’t for you but the equipment available is exceptional, lots of free weights, cable machines, plenty of racks, boxing ring and bags, battle ropes, prowler, rings, tyres and hammer, bikes the list goes on and on. The classes are great too and focus on strength, core, conditioning, power etc and they also have boxing and yoga and Pilates. The facilities are very clean and there is also a sauna. Definitely 5 stars well done guys!!
S. B. A.
Best gym out of all I've been to and gone from never doing classes to that being my most challenging and fun sessions. Trainers for every type of goal be it strength, physique, athletic performance or absolute beginners. Best bar none
M. P.
A great gym in particular the boxing classes. For anyone who is looking for a great cardio session then look no further. There are many other classe that can really push your limits and often do. Convenient if working and living local. I give this gym 5 stars.
J. F.
The training programmes Steve designed for me have been fantastic. It’s been hard work at times, but always loads of fun, and I’m really pleased with my results so far. I’ve lost 15% body fat, gained 5kg of muscle and all my lifts are the heaviest they’ve ever been! I couldn’t recommend Coach Steve, Primal Gym and all the trainers there enough.
S. B.
I started at Primal after feeling I had plateaud in my training and looking for a new challenge. From my first visit I feel included and welcome, little things like the staff saying hello and asking about me and my training, calling me by my first name.
I was looking to start Calisthenics and was introduced to Jim. It’s some of the most challenging training i’ve done and i’m REALLY enjoying it. The balance and body weight drills are new and difficult. Just what I was looking for.
The plan Jim puts together for me every 4 weeks allows me to learn new skills but most importantly I can see and feel the progression in my movements and ability. Jim feels like an expert and his plans have thought and experience behind them.
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Primal has completely turned the way I feel not only about the gym but also about exercise completely on its head. Everyone I’ve met there from the trainers to the other members has been nothing but lovely, there’s a community feel that I’ve never experienced anywhere else.
A. D.
My girlfriend and I have been members for nearly a year now and find it a brilliant place to train. I've never been more engaged in regular exercise before and I put that down to Primal. Staff and members are all very friendly and would recommend it to anyone.
S. J.
I’ve been going to gyms and trying to get fit for years, at Primal I finally feel like I’m making progress – I’ve got the support and encouragement I need to look at not only what I’m doing in the gym but also my nutrition at home.
I’m 5’11” and have never had a slender frame. Since coming to Primal I have started to work on what I can do rather than aspiring to be something I’m not. My aim has shifted from being small or petite to getting fit, building muscle and eating well. It’s not fitness or nutrition alone that has started making a difference tome but the support I’ve had in shifting my whole attitude.
A. E.
I have been training with Costas for around 8 months now and in that time I have gone from 16% body fat to a personal record of 6%. Costas recognised that I had an upper to lower body imbalance and wrote dedicated programs for me that focussed on legs. As a result whereas previously my max squat and bench press were equal now my max squat is 40kg more than my max bench (160kg vs 120kg). He introduced me to functional training like heavy prowler and walking lunges which I’d never done before and wrote programs that were rigorous yet fun. Furthermore he identified the shoulder problems I had been suffering from for years and gave me a range of exercises to do each time I worked out. As a result I am now able to sleep sideways on my shoulder again which is something I hadn’t done for greater than 5 years!
He is always upbeat and enthusiastic and has given me that push when I’ve come for a session feeling tired. He asks about results and is genuinely interested and excited when I make progress. He is easy going yet motivational at the same time and I’ve had great fun training with him and recommend him highly.
However he still owes me a whole chicken from Nando’s when I bet him I could do 50 x 12.5 kg seated dumbbell curls in one go and he lost....😂
Overall I am very satisfied with Costas and couldn’t recommend him highly enough. Thanks Cos!
M. S.
After being diagnosed with mental health issues, I was looking for a method of exercise that was enjoyable, rewarding and would support my mental well-being. Having been at Primal 2 years now, I can honestly say the community at Primal is second to none - nobody judges anyone, everyone is supportive, positive and motivational.
I don’t see Primal as a gym, I see it as a frat house where I hang out with my friends and we do healthy stuff together. The PTs are constantly challenging me with new exercises. Just last week I was pulling Darren along on a giant elastic bungee cord and left with a massive smile on my face!
In terms of results, I am a different person now. Physically I am at a place I never thought I would be, having been an 11 stone stick man most of my life. I’m able to do things I never thought possible. The big change though is mentally. Everyone who knows me comments on just how much happier I am. I’m more productive and much better husband, friend and colleague.
Every penny I have invested in PT at Primal has been returned ten-fold. I know it sounds clichéd but I genuinely would not be where I am now without Primal.
P. L.
Awesome classes and friendly staff helpful with any injuries and modify routines to aid. Emma's conditioning class is amazing workout leaves me beat. Chris's powerlifting is also awesome recommend for everyone.
S. K.
The best gym I have been too, I have seen more results in the 6 months I have been going than ever before. All staff and trainers are really knowledgeable. I have been having Pt sessions with Steve and could not recommend enough.
L. S.
Love training at Primal. I'm not a gym person and haven't really liked other gyms I've been at but Primal makes it fun, the classes are brilliant and the training is varied.
A. D.
Best gym I’ve ever been to! Friendly PTs - Mat has gone to lengths to create a bespoke training plan for me, the place is always clean, great equipment and who doesn’t love a dog in the gym every now and again to get you through those last reps...
K. J.
I have been using programmes developed by Ollie now for over a year. The programmes are challenging yet varied and enjoyable. Coupled with a sensible diet I have seen the rewards, my clients and friends tell me I look great and I must admit I certainly feel it. I am 57 this July and I feel so much younger. The programmes have increased my flexibility, strength, endurance and above all well being. Ollie is a great Coach, a proper character who you can have a laugh and a bit of banter with. Ollie also has much knowledge in all aspects of fitness and diet. Very approachable and a definite people person too. If you are lucky you get to meet the adorable Pepper too!
D. G.
Great gym. Not the biggest but has a strong selection of kit, boxing ring and decent dressing room. Classes are great but book early as they are very popular.
C. W.
Great gym, great community, great fun. The knowledge and expertise of Primal's Personal Trainers is second to none. If you want results, this is the place to come.
H. A.
I would never have believed anyone could turn me into someone who enjoys the gym, the friendly atmosphere, the lovely supportive staff and gym members and the fab classes and programmes mean I'm the healthiest I've been in years and I'm genuinely loving it!
A. B.
This place has transformed my life. I've been to several gyms in the past and just given up after x amount of time. At primal not only did I start to enjoy myself but it's now become one of my key hobbies and passions.

Fantastic gym. Trainers are a pleasure to be around and the gym itself has a great atmosphere you won't find at any other gym. Highly recommend!

The best gym if you actually want to see results. The trainer's are knowledgeable and friendly and there's a community that you don't see at other gyms.

No machines just weights and space with loads of classes takes all the good bits of crossfit in a clean environment

(Translated) Another month I will complete the 8-month personal training course that coach Oliver Worrell has customized for me. At the beginning of this semester, I was under a lot of stress. I decided to go to the gym mainly to improve my sleep quality and mental state through exercise. After communicating with Oliver, he made all the plans for me including exercise, bedtime steps and relaxation methods. Very professional, meticulous than my expectations. During the training process, Oliver has also made adjustments according to my situation and status, and constantly encouraged me to provide supervision and support. Now my physical state and mental state have been adjusted to a more positive state, and I have begun to do some muscle training. I am very satisfied with my personal training course. highly recommended!
I will finish my 8 month program soon with my trainer Oliver Worrell. Before I went to Primal gym I was suffering from some mental health issues. My sleep quality was very bad at that time, so I decided to get a personal trainer to help me Based on my situations, Oliver made a program for me including training plan, nutrition plan and many suggestions about how to get relaxed. I find the program was very helpful for beginners like me. Oliver was also very supportive and patient. Whenever I don 't feel good he is there to help me. I am very pleased with the results. I definitely feel happier and stronger. Strongly recommended!
