Reviews of Nuffield Health Wandsworth Southside Fitness & Wellbeing Gym
H.
The best gym I’ve ever been to (and I’ve trained in many).
Friendly and helpful staff
Big open space
Great equipment
Lighting and spa area
Parking
What more could you want from a gym. This was the saddest part about leaving the area!

Just wanted to give a big thank you to the gentleman working the front desk on Friday the 14th January 2022. At 17.30. Very kind, generous and helpful. The actual gym is nice. Open. Big. And has amazing facilities. Thank you

Started going to Nuffield while looking for Muay Thai classes in the area and was really happy to find them offered at Nuffield. The gym is clean and well equipped and the Muay Thai classes are great; Sean is a great instructor and his classes are very accessible and welcoming. Would love more sessions a week. Definitely recommend this gym.

Great gym, really clean. Good to see. Really I just recently joined for the classes and the Thai Boxing but the gym and facilities is spot on too. Staff really friendly especially the tall guy at reception, can't remember his name. The Thai coach is great, makes the class work. Love the community in the Thai Boxing

I recently joined this gym and have been very impressed with how attentive staff have been at keeping me informed about gym updates and offers. One team member, Vetmir, after hearing about my own financial situation accommodated for me and enabled me to join the gym at a later date, keeping all my joining records on file to allow for a smooth admin process when it was best for me to become a member.
I am sure this high level of service will be upheld during my membership :)

I rejoined recently now that the pandemic is easing. Even though there are 2 gyms closer to me I prefer using southside. The team are really friendly and it’s more spacious. Alan was super helpful and let me use the facilities whilst I was waiting for the sales team to get back to me. They still have the NHS 40% discount too!
R. S.
The gym facilities are decent enough and there is lots of space to work out, but a big problem is the total lack of decent WiFi or 4G reception to stream music while you workout out. Also the spa pool is always cold

I have been a member for a while and I think the team has done really well to adapt to the new Covid conditions. Every time I am there the cleaners are not stopping taking care of the floor and the equipment. The staff is always friendly and the facilities including the pool are really nice. I enjoy the classes although understandably there are less classes but overall a nice gym where I feel safe

This Nuffield gym has improved over recent months, but still needs a bit of effort to get to the level we expect from a Nuffield gym in this price range. The gym's staff are usually quite friendly and helpful and the gym workout areas and studios are kept clean.
Like many gyms in the area, there is a problem with thieves occasionally stealing from the lockers in the change rooms. This means you have to try and keep all your valuables on you while working out, which isn't great. It also means you feel worried about keeping your bag with spare clothes etc. locked in a locker, because the thieves have been very good at picking any padlock. Be that as it may, my wife and I still enjoy this gym as it has a better pool area that some other gyms nearby and our personal trainer is excellent.
The gym's equipment is fairly good and quite modern. It would be useful if some of the equipment was more regularly cleaned, but some gyms are worse at that. Sauna and steam room etiquette is flaunted by some pervy lads, who only wear their wet underwear or simply a towel with nothing underneath to those areas. There's nothing worse to put you off your next meal than some sleazy perv swinging their boy-veggies around when you're just trying to chillax.
This gym is now one of the most expensive in Wandsworth and also faces fierce competition from gyms that offer decent service and lower fees. If it hadn't been for their pool and close proximity to our home, we might have considered going somewhere else.

I’m not sure what the other reviewers were seeing when they have said the facilities are basic. This is a former Virgin Active gym which has everything you need.
For the price and location, it is good value. It has a swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room etc too.
There are lots of classes and the gym area is good. There is a crèche for children, free parking for 2 hours and its inside the shopping centre.
Pure Gym is half the price but it’s nowhere near as good. The average rating it has does not do this place justice.

The facilities are generally very good and you don't usually have to wait very long for equipment unless you are training at peak times. You don't normally have to wait for cardio equipment at any time. However, there are some issues with cleanliness, especially in the changing rooms, and on most week nights it is a challenge to actually use the pool or enjoy the spa facilities as it's full of noisy children (as is the women's changing room, where they are allowed to run around and disrupt other adults). Staff are generally courteous and friendly.

I like this gym but it lets itself down in the area of gym etiquette: the absence of it. I joined here after a little over a year at Virgin Smuggler's Way and they are good comparitors. This Nuffield was a Virgin until early last year (ish). It retains some of the Virgin look, including a floor "grid" and in the changing rooms. There is a pool and a creche. The weights area has a better layout here being all on one floor and has equipment and machines Virgin does not have, including a decline (as well as incline and flat) bench press, properly hung TRXs and a range of extra machines. There are plentiful swiss balls and bosus and generally it is spacious and well equipped. In the mornings it is never too busy though it can be noisy and some equipment hard to use during the morning grid class. Comparing the weights area, layout, equipment and stretch area it clearly beats Virgin in my view. On the downside, gym etiquette is not taught, practised or enforced. The bars, smith machine, leg press etc are regularly left loaded, sometimes with alot of weight and despite the numbers of sets of dumbells they can be hard to find as they are left anywhere. Staff do tidy up but I have yet to see anyone be asked/told to tidy away equipment/clear a bar even when they leave it loaded under the nose of a Nuffield PT. There are some very obvious serial offenders who behave this way even if the bar/machine is totally clear when they start using it. I would have said that at least the PTs here clear the bars when with clients (unlike Virgin) but then saw one not do so and walk off. Twice I have raised the issue. I am told the lack of gym etiquette amongst members is acknowledged and that something must and will be done. Part of the problem is blamed on the ex Virgin heritage (that was a while ago though..) New signage was being considered (nothing has come of that so far) and the last I heard from the gym manager was that the gym is too short staffed now to patrol the weights area, it is not worth doing anything during a holiday period but come September there will be a "blitz" on etiquette, educating members to tidy up etc. We will see. "Tomorrow" never comes. It is always better to try doing something rather than wait and allow behaviours to spread. The floor grid here is larger and better placed than the Smuggler's Way version and is used well. 1 of the 3 stair climbers has been out of action now for at least 5 weeks. That is too long. I am not a class user but Virgin has more classes and a better variety. The one pilates class I tried here bore little resemblance to classical pilates and wasn't as good as any of the Virgin pilates classes I did. Classes are easy to book on the app and during weekdays at least seem easy to get into. The changing rooms are spacious with lots of showers which don't smell horrible and consistent hot water. There are not enough changing benches for use at busy times, the shampoo dispensers need cleaning out and you won't find face tissues, ear buds or cotton make up removal pads here. I have not used the pool but it doesn't seem busy on weekday mornings. As others have commented, the one towel allocated tends to be thin and hard. The screen continually telling you one towel benefits the environment is indeed irritating. The aircon is patchy and twice in the last week all the dispensers of blue gym tissue have been empty leaving me to use toilet paper. The reception and gym staff are friendly.
J. R.
It's a decent gym, which does not feel crowded. Unfortunately, it feels like the staff takes to little time to explore the goals and perceptions of new joiners to help them build an effective fitness plan.
Also the one towel policy makes it impossible to take advantage of all of their offerings, as you would need 2-3 towels to workout and use the sauna/pool.

I have been Virgin Active member for more than 15 years and this is one of the best gyms in London. Great one floor space and very spacious. Love a bit of weight and cardio on treadmill here. Changing room / Shower is great too. I don't do swimming but they look a bit spa (small) like...?
R.
Beautiful gym, but can't see expensive gyms staying around forever. If your not working and got time on your hands it's worth the money. But if you are working and have to go at the busy time 💯 not worth it. Staff could be more friendly.

Really don't get all the 1 star reviews, this club is by far the best nuffield I have been to. The place is huge and the equipment is so varied, free weights section is fantastic as well as the variety of cardio machines. The staff are really friendly, happy to help and have always made me feel really welcome. The place is always spotless, including the spa and shower area, anyone saying any different is talking b*****ks. The new manager (Kevin) has really sorted this place out and it is now 10 times better than it was when it was Virgin active. The free health mot's are also superb, I have mine with Douglas day and his always been great feeding me lots of advice and going through everything in depth with me. This will always be my home club, people giving this place 1 star because they are only allowed one towel are not even worth listening to, you can't review a gym on how many towels they hand out. Good job nuffield southside team 👍

Positives
Good sauna area
Classes are good
Changing rooms big
Pool is good enough for a swim
Negatives
Swim classes on till 6.15 most week nights, only 1 lane open
Toilets can be dirty
No classes before 5.30pm on a week day is poor.. and I would appreciate classes early...
I still enjoy going..

Really good gym in the center of wandsworth with great facilities and friendly staff. Particularly enjoy the weekly thai kickboxing classes. Keep it up guys!

Not the very best Virgin Active in London, but certainly a good branch. Apart from the usual good selection of machines, the steam room here is large and of a fantastic design.
Actually getting to the gym is not the flashy Virgin experience you expect though - you have to walk through the back corridors of the shopping centre and even through the multi-storey car park!
C. K.
This Gym, is ok. Is it worth £73 membership per month? No. Nuffield took over this gym fromVirgin Active and changed nothing apart from adding to the monthly fees and painting the walls green. Not for me. If you want more money Nuffield the services and facilities need to be upgraded.
A. A.
The gym itself is good but the staff is very rude specially the reception staff. They wont greet you when you go to them and if you greet them they will look the other way and won't respond. Few staff members are unaware of how their system works and will cause you a lot of problem in booking the classes. Very disappointed with the poor service. Other facilities are good and clean.
P. M.
Really nice premium gym. Good facilities: 3-street swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room , two saunas and a good area of fitness and cycling. Cleanless 5/5. Maintenance 4/5. Staff really helpful. Thing to improve is the variety and schedule of classes in the afternoons, no almost classes before 5:30pm anyday.
D. T.
Nothing special and the staff really dont seem to care. No atmosphere either. Good luck trying to get to the weights when its busy. No one is monitoring it and making sure weights are put back so people just hog their weights. I joined 9Rounds across the road and pure gym - which has come out cheaper than Nuffield and better quality.

Great Gym and brilliant staff.
Been going here for more than a year now. Have a PT once a week.
If you are looking for a clean and tidy gym with great equipment - then look no more.
:)
H.
They only give you one towel. Considering the size of the spa and the membership price, this feels ridiculous. You need atleast a towel each for equipment hygiene, spa and shower.
Spa and gym is very good.

Was a member back in 2010-2013 then left and have returned a month ago and Wow. So many more functional pieces equipment, boxes, bounce weights and platforms, hammer stregth weights, water rowers, and Watt bikes! Glad I came back. Sadly though it seems to be much busier in the evenings (obviously) and there was some kind of grid class going on on the floor place with about 6 people working out taking up space for at least 10-12.
Other than that very happy.

Been coming to this gym for 4 years on and off, AMAZING staff, clean environment, great equipment, only reason 4 stars not 5, there was a punch bag that was taken down which i used to use often, the other floor based punch bag isn't as good.
part from that, VERY highly recomend

Good gym, good changing rooms but the reception staff are really rude and unwelcoming, however, the membership staff and Personal trainers are all lovely.
P. T.
Great gym, really friendly staff. Spin classes are great fun and pool and sauna well maintained with a good range of equipment on the gym floor.
J. P.
Equipment is amazing, swimming pool is nice. Too bad they allow sometimes some trashy and uneducated people in, yelling in the spa area, like they don't understand you go there to relax in the first place.
M. G.
Awesome gym - since Nuffield have taken over it really has gone from strength to strength. Great atmosphere and working out seems less of a chore
r. D.
Shame about this place, can't put my finger on what's missing, was a member here when it was virgin and iv been in her about 5 times since Nuffield took over, could be the price and the fact it's clearly lost members so a little quiet, could also do with some decent music
3/5 about right, great equipment, and facility tho
k. p.
Great facilities, plus very clean. The gym itself does not have much of an atmosphere to it and the staff at front desk are not very friendly.
R. J.
I often went to the gym, you could often see the dirt but it has changed for some time, it is clean the mirrors are clean, the stairs are washed away you can see a clear improvement
S. C. A.
Small, intimate gym. Good facilities including a pool and sauna. Professional friendly staff
H. L.
Would be great if there were lockers on the gym floor for people who want to just pop in and out
M. A.
New manager is good. Went for one day and the gym and management is really good. One of the best nuffield gym.
D. K.
Great gym with a good sized gym floor and spa facilities that will make a lot of 5* hotels envious
J. V.
My home gym. Great facilities, space and services with 2hrs free parking.
J. P.
My cousin and I spent a lovely day there chatting away and having a good laugh sadly lost my cousin on Sat 25th Aug. but will not forget what a great day we had..
C. Z.
Nuffield is already a good choice if you do not know which gym to go to.

Awesome gym with great facilities!

Great gym, lots of machines.
S. G.
Good facilities, but not a fantastic atmosphere
