Reviews of Queen Mother Sports Centre
A. E.
Went here as a kid few times in the holiday was good for the time. Staff were useless and it's really a place if you know what you want to do go there and do it dont expect any help or advice form the staff. The pool could do with a deep clean. And the changing rooms need to be constantly checked. And cleaned.
L. C.
Lovely staff, this gym has been my home for the past 2.5 years. Can be quite busy at times, but at the end of the day the price-quality balance is still very good for central London
A. V.
Good swimming pool! Overcrowded a times but good working hours. Staff at the desk is very well trained, polite and professional. Prices are reasonable. No long term agreements which is great, easy to sign up, freeze or cancel
Never tried their gym, but pool is fine, do give it a go
J. V.
Great swim teacher for toddlers named Annabel. But the management of services can be slow and unhelpful. But we love going to swim.
M. J. B.
It's great to be able to pop in when I feel like I need something for myself.
Very handy location and good local resource.
Staff are helpful if you are polite and show respect.
L.
Massive swimmimg pool area, staff are always friendly and helpful. They cater for most sport activities..
B. M.
I was helped today at the Queen Mother Sports Centre by a very kind, efficient and attentive young man called Jordan. Thank you so much for your professionalism and dealing with my problems with the app. This is very much appreciated. You are the only person at this center that has shown any interest in helping me sort out issues that have prevented me from swimming for week's . Many Thanks.
C. K.
Great indoor pool. Long and many lanes. Group showers for the swimming areas and the lockers need either an old pound or a lock. But good location and it's one of the bigger indoor pools I've found.
S. N.
Well maintained leasure centre and friendly staff. Played badminton for a year and the courts is bit slippery I must say.
J. M.
A broad range of facilities are available at Queen Mother Sports centre. There is even a slide into the children’s pool. The facilities are ageing however still well maintained. We made use of the basketball courts to play badminton.
The sports hall runs on a strict schedule that is maintained by the staff to ensure all customers are fairly treated.
R. N.
Great centre, friendly staff. Facilities are clean and gym is well stocked with machines. Can be tricky to book slots unless you do it a few days ahead but as long as you plan it well all is good
B. M.
Really good place, very friendly and helpful staff! The personal trainers are really helpful and willing to assist with any questions especially for beginners. For that price you get a quality gym
W. M.
Nice place to play badminton and swim. Easy to book sessions online.
R. D.
Great place! Recently renovated although some renovations are still on. It has a great weight section and full equipped machines for all your needs as well as if you need they have personal ambition trainer's that you can contact. They will provide a complete rundown of what you need to do to achieve your goal and will support you. The site also has a swimming pool and sauna. Sauna is especially great if you train before hand as it helps with the recovery.
M. V.
Good pool for lap swimming. Number of lanes for lap swimming depends on the time of the day (more at rush hours). There's usually at least three lanes (slow, medium, fast) but the average speed is actually pretty slow. On the other hand, the large lanes allow for comfortable takeovers if going fast. There are single entrance and monthly/yearly membership options. Swimming timetable isn't ideal as most evenings see early closure for (pricier) master club swimming. Changing room can get a bit messy but is ok. Make sure you bring a lock for the lockers.
Water could be cleaner but unfortunately swim hats don't seem to be compulsory.
The water uses high levels of chlorine and I get chlorine allergy every time I swim here. I don't usually get this at other pools. Keep this in mind if you're sensitive to chlorine.
J. C.
I joined this gym 4 months ago and I can say I’m quite pleased with the experience. The membership is quite affordable (given it is in Victoria) and gives you access to the gym, swimming pool, steam room and classes. However, I’m not a big fan of the swimming timetable, since Tuesdays are the only weekdays that the swimming pool is open till 9, which limits the number of times you can swim if you have a 9-6 job. Also, even though all the machines are quite new in gym room, more variety and some maintenance on weightlifting machines is required to make this place better, since it gets quite crowded and need to queue often.
J. S.
Great place to go for a quick swim or long gym session. Has many other sports available but booking ahead is recommended as it can get quite busy. Pool is generally empty and you can swim at your own pace. Very friendly and helpful staff and you can buy all you need at reception. I am sure they will even lend you a towel if needed... if you ask nicely. Lots of good places to have a bite to eat around the area too.
B. S.
Very friendly Sports Centre, gym is very good, swimming pool never crowded! Staff is very professional and helpful. It is cleaned regularly and the Spanish lady is so hard working making sure that everywhere is spotless! Saunas are very good and never too crowded. It is a nice place to exercise, do classes, swim and relax..Highly recommend!
C. C.
I discovered the Queen Mother Sports Centre while on a business trip in London. The staff was friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, professional, and helpful. The classes were energetic and well run. The facilities were clean and well maintained. They have everything anyone would need from cardio to weights as well as a pool. They offer daily rates which are ideal for business travelers. I had a great experience and highly recommend Queen Mother Sports Centre.
P. P.
For the price you get as a student (very cheap considering it has a swimming pool and a wide range of group classes) you basically get everything you need, especially if you are a beginner/middle level gym-goer. Yes you need to book places in group classes way in advance but it’s easy through their app. There’s also enough equipment, which is clean and tidy.
M. L.
Has the potential to be a good venue but the owners refuse to spend any money on the place. It is really disappointing. The place is unclean, poor changing facilities, broken lockers, no spinners for wet swim suits. The only saving grace is the wonderful gym staff. Some lovely, helpful people who are great at their jobs and go above and beyond to assist and keep people motivated. Shout out to Lina and Tyrone.
A. A.
It is a good leisure centre. But it has a lazy vibe. Huge space and has all the equipment to workout and swimming pool.
Had my membership for two years, but somehow visited few times only.
The disadvantage it has no music.
P. N.
You get what you pay for. "Better" gyms are cheaper than say Virgin or Fitness First. However, all the equipment is run down and not very clean.
The changing rooms and showers are dirty and don't feel nice. I have seen all kind of stuff there including homeless people using the place to shower and dry their wet socks with the hairdryers. People are cutting their toe nails in the changing rooms and leaving their dirt. I am always happy to be out of there quickly.
The saving grace is the decent swimming pool, otherwise it would be nothing but a pretty run down, dirty community gym.
A. S.
3.5 stars. The pool smell is horrendous. The squash courts are fine. Sometimes the lights didn’t work. You can rent a racquet at the desk and buy balls if you’re just trying it out.
M. P.
The classes are the best thing about this gym - the instructors are for the most part really good at what they do. The clientele seems to consist of people of different ages and ethnicities, and lots of families, which gives the centre a nice community atmosphere. I agree with other reviews about the rudeness of the reception staff - most of them can't even muster a smile let alone be helpful. The toilets and changing rooms are also a bit of a health risk. The floor drains are full of little flies! Disgusting. Nearly all of the gym equipment is old and dirty and there's no effort to encourage people to wipe things down after they've used them.
J. B.
Excellent facilities, especially the 6 lane swimming pool, and has a lovely community feel about it.
Would have given them five stars, however they need to improve their situation with the entry barriers; any tom dick and harry can walk off the street as often is the case.
Sometimes as people are leaving via the glass door barrier, several people just stroll in without paying and use the facilities for free.... I sometimes wonder why I even bother with membership! You will often see people standing near the entry barrier waving to the reception staff to let them in and the staff just press the open button and let them through without checking their membership card or credentials.
All users should be vetted, what's the point of having paid membership if people are going to use the facilities for free!!???!?!? Parents are the worst offenders, especially as it's free for kids, however they arrive with their kids and they get waived through the barriers and the parents end of using the pool for free with their kids because no one bothers to check whether they are going to the viewing gallery or using the facilities!
I would love to raise my concerns with the manager, however they only ever have their 'meet the manager' session during off peak hours during the day time when most regular users are at work!
Anyway, other than this grumble, the facilities are great and the reception staff are lovely, especially the German girls who always goes above and beyond with her customer service. I would definitely recommend the QMSC, however management really need to assess the gate security issue.
C. K.
I use Queen Mother Sports Center for their pool, which is great. I go when they open at 6:30am and it tends to get busy as I leave around 7:30am. The pool is huge and the deep end is very deep. There is a rec area, slow lane, medium lane and fast lane. There is a pay-for-the-use locker that is £1 that you get back when you leave. The only draw back is that the showers are communal and the type that you have to keep pressing to keep on - which is annoying. Other than that, it is a great pool and I highly recommend it! It is a little over £5 for non-Westminster residents and £2.05 for Westminster residents with the City Saver card.
J. K.
Only come here for the instructors as classes are very good. Cleanliness here is nit goid at all studios rarely if ever cleaned. Changing rooms too hot...one loo (cubicle) in ladies downstairs been out of use for iver a year. Reception staff either very goid or utter pants. It may be a community gym but sort cleanliness out!!
M. M.
I originally signed up to this gym when they were just about to do the refurb back in 2016. It didn’t have an amazing selection of gym equipment but there was this cute little mini gym on the first floor that had everything you need if you’re doing a quick free weights workout and want more privacy. By October 2016 the refurb was too inconvenient, so I cancelled my membership.
Fast forward to the present day, and I’ve rejoined and most of the refurb has been completed. The rejoining process was quick and easy - aided by helpful staff and receptionists. I could reactivate my old card, which I had kept but if I hadn’t I’d receive a new one.
Before (2016) there weren’t very many classes on, so I never went to them. However, now there is a full class schedule and something for everyone. So far I have attended yoga on a Friday evening and Aqua on a Saturday afternoon.
The yoga is good, challenging and very relaxing. It’s best to bring your own mat if you have one, but if you don’t there are mats in the studio you can use. You usually do it bare foot unless you prefer to wear yoga socks. Doing it in normal socks is only condoned if you have a medical condition that prevents you from going barefoot or wearing yoga socks. On that note, the instructor gives instructions on how to do the moves with yoga blocks to make it easier / less strain on certain areas.
Aqua is a very fun, very intensive workout. As it is in the water it both helps and hinders you. The water provides resistance against your movements but only as hard as you push - so it is great for getting an intense workout without worrying about injuring yourself or setting resistance manually. The instructor is friendly and helpful. She knows the regulars and for those who are less able she shows them alternate exercises to do, so they can still enjoy the class and get a good workout. The class is very enjoyable, will work you out all over and good for lifting the spirits. Music is ace.
The facilities themselves are similar to 2016, except:
There are new lockers *everywhere*
There is a new roof over the pool
The gym has new equipment and it is all in good condition
The cardio section of the gym has more and new machines. This includes Watt bikes, seated cycles, arm cycle, stair master and some natural run machines (I’m not sure if they have a real name).
The little gym I used became a hot yoga studio
All in all a very good gym and at an unbeatable price for the area. It is also one of the few locally with a pool and full gym and full class schedule all offered at one location.
S. P.
Compared with local gym memberships, it's not bad for the price, especially as there is a swimming pool thrown in. Gym equipment has improved slightly with the addition of a squat rack and some Jungle Jim monstrosity taking centre stage. The biggest issue is the poor changing rooms (broken lockers and limited bench space), and the generally half baked staff. With constant averts to say they've invested half a million refurbishing it, you wonder where it all went besides a lick of paint and some new floors.
A. J.
Easy to use online booking. We booked a court in the main hall as non members. It was cheap for central London and quick to check in at reception and head straight to the court. Didn't use other facilities but I could see the main swimming pool had a lot of lane division.
It was quite busy with a lot of school children at 5/6pm on a Tuesday.
S. Y.
Good pool, open early for pre work swimming. It gets busy later. It needs some renovation works throughout but provides what I want.
I have never used the gym but that seems equally popular.
S. D.
The pool was pretty cold and i swim 5 times a week! But its a good pool...changing rooms were communal but kept pretty well. Very ideal for a lunchtime workout amd the staff were friendly and helpful
A. S.
Nice 25m pool, good for training but unfortunately swimming cap is not obligatory and I often see and touch hair in the water which I find disgusting. The changing area is okay but it tends to be crowded with people who don't seem to work out but come for a shower and rest...it's not a pleasant experience.
V. F.
This gym is inexpensive compared to gyms such Nuffield, Virgin, etc, but has everything you might want - swimming pool, sauna, cycling classes, fitness classes, hot yoga classes, large gym, squash courts, indoor football, lots of new treadmills and other machines, free wifi if you like me and enjoy watching a movie while you run. Locker rooms are ok (lots of locks are permanently in use or broken), but otherwise its the best gym I've been to as you get a lot of value for acceptable amount of money. And surprisingly it's not super busy even at peak times.
C. G.
The recently renovated gym area (Q1 2013) is quite spacious and well equipped. Big swimming pool and great yoga classes. Still one of my favourite gyms in London, specially for the price, which is very affordable.
M. C.
I always have a Mesmerising time in the Queen mother sports centre.
K. H.
It's a well equipped sports centre that could do with a bit of a deep clean. New management are giving it a coat of paint which is greatly needed. Not top of the range but affordable and does the job!
B. C.
Average city centre leisure centre. Has two pools one for lane swimming and one depth adjustable for board diving and scuba diving practice. Also a fitness gym and exercise facilities.
Centre runs classes and various training courses. Can also try scuba diving on Wednesdays with local dive club for £10, search for Hellfins on the web.
M. H.
Clean & well equipped gym
Decent size heated pool (25m)
Not too busy, even during lunch/after work hours.
All in all a pretty solid gym.
E. P.
Be glad that they have a heart and let those without a home use the showers, a basic right to wash and be clean. When we are so lucky why deny others, compassion is needed, not meanness of spirit.
S. W.
4 stars on the basis of £33/mo basic membership when purchased annually, and the recently refurbished free weight area. Some basic errors like lack of mirrors behind the power racks, and no protein shakes in the vending machines, but overall more than good value for money.
D. H.
The centre offers a wide range of activities with excellent instructors. The gym is also quite good. Could work more on the customer care service, reception friendliness and efficiency.
w. B.
Son has swimming lessons here the instructor is good. First time did not know my way around the center and they don't give u much help at reception, u just have to find ur way around. .
R. B. -. E. k.
Pool is really good.
People mention about the gym area not being so well maintained but have met people there who love the gym.
Nice large sports centre.
Visit it and get healthy.
T. G.
It has a decent swimming pool but be warned, it closes really early for lessons sometimes. On my first visit the guy at reception didn't mention this so I got about 5 minutes swimming in!
F. D.
I try not to let myself lose shape and this gym is always my best choice. Every now and then I come here for a refreshing workout. The equipment is in good condition and there is always room for all the people who visit.
K. P.
Convenient sports facility right in the heart of London. A bit pricey, but good range of services
G. Q.
Good facilities, especially since the refurbishment. A little like a rabbit warren, and strong smell of chlorine when you walk in, but great for squash, badmington, swimming etc.
B. P.
Only rating the swimming facilities. The pool is quite large but a bit overcrowded in evening hours, where they could extend the area reserved for swimming. The changing rooms are ok, a bit messy.
M. G.
in the general it is an excellent sporting center.
Only I thought the gym left to want, it has a limited number of alters bars, at least that could make available more and you don't need to wait other use.
J. J.
Played squash there, the courts are far on the back. There's 2 courts which are pretty good in quality, but the change rooms are a letdown... Smelly and very humid.
L. R.
very big sports centre recently renovated. note this is not a sports "club" but a sports centre so don't count on plush facilities - however it's great if you just want to work out or play sports
F. F.
Kind of in need of renovation and considering the prices the facilities aren't fantastic. But it's a leisure centre and has decent opening times for swimming & gymming.
M. C.
Decent gym, recently refurbished. Well equipped for weight training. Reasonably good locker rooms and a nice spa area.
V.
Just about refurbished building with clean services, big gym with a lot of variety of equipment and pools are really good. Would come here for my birthday party.
M. B.
Nice family-friendly swimming pool and gym, good value for Westminster residents! Facilities are well maintained but would benefit from an upgrade
A. E.
Excellent gym facilities friendly staff always willing to help.
O. S.
Nice large sports hall with 5 badminton courts. There's also a boxing gym and swimming pool.
S. C.
Great facilities for Badminton and Basketball!
M. B.
I use it for the pool which is good and a good length (25m) . Changing rooms are fine - £1 for locker (refunded).
M. L.
Love the classes! Good size changing rooms and lockers. Some staff are nicer than others but overall ok.
G. E.
We play football in the sports hall every week. It's a good space and cheap to rent but the equipment is not great. The football goals in particular are falling apart
G. O.
A really lovely, clean and relaxing pool. It gets very busy with the local work crowd from about 5 O'Clock on weekdays, but outside those times it's a real pleasure.
S. W.
Good price and a nice pool but the fitness room often had broken machines which seemed to take months to be fixed.
Y. R.
I come here every Friday night to swim. The pool is becoming really disgusting, however. Last time I went there, there were tissues and plasters lying at the bottom of the pool and the water was really cloudy.
N. S.
I often swim in the afternoons.. Its usually quiet, 2 or 3 people in the lane maybe, though you can get unlucky. Staff are friendly
J. K.
Gave me wrong information about kids swimming timetable however they let me to go to adult one. Helpful staff at the end
P. B. (.
Mainly use this place for swimming. The facilities are great - though I tend to use it during the day.
F. B.
Good quality. Cool swimming water! Good staff, helpful and good changing and shower facilities!
D. C.
The pool was OK, it water was cloudy but it was clean. The changing room were OK a bit messy but it was the end of the day.
C. c.
I usually go boxing there and this place is massive!! There's a variety of different sports that can be enjoyed here and nice staff too !!
P. H.
Got everything you need. Pools good, badminton courts good, wet room showers a little lacklustre hence no 5 star.
i. c.
Very nice swimming pool and great shower, very reasonable price for Westminster local
t. k.
Gym, swimming pool and football etc available here, reasonable prices and pretty clean and good facilities
D. o.
Decent gym and pool all round even has a diving pool and scuba sessions
T. N.
The swimming pool is good, but is not worth £6.20 for a single entrance
S. P.
The gym is ok if you avoid peak times (eg around 6:30pm).
G. U.
Lots of activities, classes to choose from. With a nice big gym. Only con.high price
J. B.
Great pool, although it is common for up to half of the lanes to be closed because of lessons.
T. E.
Que to get in . Other workers just seem to do nothing about the que. Cancelled our booking as doubled booked but only told us when we arrived.
M.
Nice gym, just a parents should be more strict to their kids.
A. d. S.
I had a lovely swim huge and very clean pools I recommend
R. J.
It is perfect for the gym and swimming great for the children. Good community spirit.
B. T.
Gym, swimming pool, classes available. Staff are ok, price is decent.
K. R.
Great pool but cost a lot to go in with small toilets broken step and roof
T. G.
Pricey but good facilities. Towels can be hired which is a nice touch.
E. M.
Swimming pool, yoga classes, gym, childrens swimming lessons, friendly reception staff, clean changing rooms.
