Reviews of The Castle Centre
T. X.
Basic gym which does the job however customer service could be better and the upkeep of facilities. This gym is good for beginners starting out as it is not overwhelming and unlike other gyms it's not all eyes on you, everyone is just getting along with their workouts in peace :)
g. e.
Good vibe and clean. However, the machines are so old and rusty - I would say around 70% of them. Some have a broken adjustable bar, others don't work smoothly. In fact, literally every single leg machine has a fault. I think this is ridiculous for a mid-priced gym like this one to have so many broken machines.
T. S.
Great gym, well maintained and clean. Lots of facilities and classes i haven't used yet but fully intend to. This place is very affordable if you can manage to pay for the whole year. The staff a very friendly and helpful.
C. L.
This is main health centre for people who live in Elephant and Castle and surrounding areas. It has a training pool and a medium size main pool. Both cater for women and other groups, with dedicated times where they have exclusive access.
The Castle (Health Centre) has a modern fully equipped gym and weights room.
As it is fairly new and purpose built I would recommend it to the younger generations but it does feel a little rough around the edges. Their cleaning, maintenance and customer care needs a little improvement.
K. D.
Swimming pools are great, both for parents and children, kids pool is 29 decrease, big pool 28 degrees very warm and clean place. I wish diving was allowed for kids training.
Only negative thing receptionist man can behave like a boss and arrogant.
V. c.
I always go here swinning. It's a great centre but the hairdryer are constantly broken!
K. F.
Been using this Centre for years now but suddenly they have decided to stop Lane swimming! Why? This was a time when serious swimmers could do lengths in fast, slow or medium lanes. We are now bumping into each other and I cannot do my lengths with ease. Thought we were supposed to be encouraging keeping fit not just playing around in the pool. This is ridiculous!
B. B.
I like to go to this gym, however I can see the cleaners don't do their job properly, soon it will get worse and worse if they don't fix this problem. Some of the workers, with all my respect, don't speak English at all. No wonder if they don't do proper job if they don't know what had been told to them to be done. Pretty nice facility, although very busy during the weekend.
R. N.
The general manager Chris Yearley is doing a fantastic job. There has been a massive improvement with staffing. The gym refurbishment is amazing and instigated by the feedback of members.

Purpose built modern health and leisure centre added as part of the Elephant & Castle regeneration by the developers. Comes complete with 2 pools, gym, weights room, sauna & steam rooms and good opening hours well into the evening. Admission costs are reasonable, but one cannot help a feeling that this is about image & PR for the face of the regeneration, as clearly there are numerous issues that require attention. Will give 5 stars for the concept, the location and the building itself, as the other issues can be put right.
K. D.
Decent centre, very good swimming pool, gym equipment a bit outdated and could do with a refurb and a deep clean. Staff not always as friendly or helpful as you’d want them to be.
n. t.
Just love this place. Its so peaceful. No noise. Though the badminton court is there. But its separate so its doesn’t creates any problem. Just beside there is lessons place. The washroom and showers are top class. Using of padlocks gives you the safety of you props. The washroom is big and clean.
The gym is beautiful. There is much space. And there Isn't that much crowd. Less rush. People comes here are polite amd gentle. During corona. They sensitised everything. The trainers and the workers work there are really good. Only one lady works there is really unprofessional. I Don't know why her body lengauge is really weird. She is unfit though.
U. H.
Great equipment, staff to support and free swimming lessons for residents of Southwark
N. M.
Modern set up, clean and friendly every time I've been. The pool can get busy, but generally there's enough space for doing lengths. The changing rooms are much improved since they changed the system so you have to bring in a padlock (which means people can't run off with the locker key and put the locker out of action).
A. P.
I have been to the Castle Centre today 21/07/2019 with my boyfriend and received a fantastic customer service from the receptionist/host who served us at the till at 19:30. He helped us choose swimming accessories as well and was very helpful and knowledgeable. I would give him 5 stars for his service. I enjoy going to the Castle swimming pool and the sauna on a regular basis. The water is just the right temperature and the centre is open till 22:00 most days and very accessible. It would be good if the centre introduced a membership for just the swimming pool and sauna. Perhaps something to think about?
M. O.
My friend wanted to bring me as a guest on her membership. She asked how and was told to ring up and they told her I need to sign up online and then turn up on the day. When I arrived they told us that I couldn't come in because she hadn't requested a guest pass. They said I could come in but would have to pay £10 for the gym and £5 for pool because she hadn't given 24 hours notice and got the pass. Bit of a shame as she rang them last week and they didn't mention that she needed to apply for a pass. In the end they let us in to the pool which was nice. Overall seems to have decent facilities but poorly managed.
M.
Pool itself is OK, but the (men's) changing room is terrible. The floor is filthy (bring your own flip-flops if you care about hygiene), the lockers are mostly broken or unusable due to missing keys.
Edit: The gym has somewhat cleaner changing rooms (same locker issues though). Gym equipment is mostly OK, but popular kit is very worn and the area overall gives a feeling of being a bit rundown which is sad considering the gym is fairly new.
C. K.
As a Southwark resident, I'm entitled to free use of that gym Friday to Sunday under the "Everyone's Active" scheme.
Three stars for the hardware and facilities that are relatively new and in good availability.
But if it wasn't a freebie, I would probably don't go there. It can be a very busy place, where unfortunately, hygiene seems to be low on the management's priority list.
And the attitude of the security and reception staff is (always and invariably) terrible.
B. W.
So I only swim here and there are certain staff who are great however this is not everyone. The men's changing room is really filthy in places, I had to complain about the drinking fountain as it was so dirty. Also most of the lockers are now broken. So the main two problems are low staff morale...there is a guy in a suit who always seems to be wandering about not doing much and I guess that's the manager who should probably look at his staff training. Saying all these bad points is sad really as the place is/was amazing and a great facility. I go there times a week and it's helped my health loads, the sauna helping me too. Just a bit more care about maintinence and cleaning and a good manager and it would be brilliant 😁 oh and the teas good ...

Recently (
Last 5ish years) renovated gym with great facilities and an awesome pool. The gym is part of southwark everyone active so free access to residents on set times during the weekend. They also have competitive membership offers routinely making it a well-priced centrally located gym. Good range of classes and private PT sessions (Also very affordable btw!) offered.
D. B.
I think some of the complaints about staff are a bit overstated, and I have never used the pool, courts or anything other than the gym.
However I do think that the gym - the free weights area specifically (of course) - is an accident waiting to happen, thanks to people misusing equipment, over crowding, potholes in the floor (!) and the attitude of some of the staff and punters.
That said, as with most gyms, it's fine 99% of the time, you just need to be persistent.
A. A.
The swimming pool is very good, neat and clean. I'd say the arrangement of changing cabins is weird, there are not enough of them, and in peak periods (like the end of aqua course) you'll have to wait to get a cabin to dress. For the lockers in the change rooms, you'll need an old pound coin (the new one does not work) or a token you might ask at the reception.
S. F. L.
Great spacious gym with loads of different types of equipment - the best gym I've used for the price. Easy online system to book things. Yet to use pool but sauna & steam were nice. Went to play badminton one Saturday and the whole process was very easy. Can't knock it really.
O. C.
The centre is a few years old. The reception looks nice with seating and they also serve food. The prices however I believe are a bit high. Another downside as well having only one toilet to serve quite a lot of people which makes a queue.
I have not visited the gym, but the swimming pool however small and it gets a bit crowded, is state of the art.
T.
Nice but someone should change the time on the clock in the sports hall.
S. I.
Good as long as you can make use of the fitness area and swimming pool: Clean and spacious facilities as long as you can access them. The swimming pool is frequently overcrowded while they do not provide dedicated lanes for swimming. On weekends, most machines are in use in the fitness area.
If you are unemployed, self-employed or otherwise free to schedule your day, you should subscribe and schedule your day around your fitness activity. If you are not, you will rarely enjoy the centre.

Some mixed reviews on here about customer service but all I can say is give Russell a raise! He went above and beyond
A. O.
I only use the centre for exercise classes, and they have some good ones, in a very nice, spacious studio with good equipment. The look and feel of the place is new, big and clean. What little I experienced of the customer service was a bit dodgy, and occasionally there are logistic problems that could easily be taken care of with some attention and forethought, but all in all I'm very happy to have this centre close to home. It also offers free gym and pool to Southwark residents (although it's limited to specific times and seems to involve a lot of queuing about).
A. K.
This place is a little gem on my doorstep the pool is great, gym is well equipped and there is a sauna and steam room too! Free swim and gym for 1 hour Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm with everyone Active makes this place extra special! The only complaint is sometimes the queuing system is long!
E.
The Castle Centre is a brilliant gym and swimming facility regarding training or leisure purposes. It's super beneficial for people like myself who live in the Southwark area as they provide free gym and swimming during the weekends! Although I have never had any problems with the staff, I would have given this 5 stars if..... A. Tackle problems when it came to long lines as sometimes people take long at the counter (usually because they're either registering or asking questions while everyone behind wait, which can take a long time)....... and B. They need to upgrade their lockers. They still take the old £1 coin and it's annoying the fact that I have to look everywhere in my house to find one before I go. But overall, it's a very nice place indeed.
J. G.
So I actually switched memberships out of here a couple of months ago. Here are pros and cons of this place in my opinion:
Pros: brand new facility. New pool, new gym, new equipment and technology. Super fancy and modern. It’s also one of the more affordable places for exercise (especially with student discounts!).
Cons: as someone who works during the day, I rely on this facility for evening and weekend classes. I wasn’t quite pleased with the caliber and quality of the fitness classes. Some instructors were amazing and clearly trained on how to lead a class, whereas others did not seem to have any training at all and would lead the worst classes ever. And I’m not talking about hard vs easy. I’m talking about proper intervals, good flow of movements, punctuality and time for stretching at the end, and a variety of exercises. You’d have the exact same class week after week- which gets so boring and really does nothing for your body.
Another con are the lockers. I guess they missed the memo that the pound was going to change because you can’t lock them unless you have an old British pound.
And my final con is the cleanliness of the place. Sure, it’s brand new and it all seems clean and shiny but it is very evident that they do not prioritize hygiene. At the end of the classes, nobody is told or encouraged to clean the mats that they just sweat all over and so if you go know you’ll notice that the bright green yoga mats are stained black from shoes and sweat. Other gyms have disinfectant wipes to clean them up. The bathrooms in the evening often have garbage everywhere too.
Please keep in mind that my review is only relevant for the classes. I have never used the swimming or regular gym facilities.
H. W. (.
So great to have a swimming pool newly opened in this area. It's clean and not too busy (maybe people don't yet realise it's actually open eventually!). Includes sauna and steam room. Changing rooms are quite small but that's the only complaint. Lockers take £1 (refundable)
I. M.
It’s quite a decent gym - really big and with lots of facilities. It’s a great place to do your workout but there was only one reception staff (extremely depressed and not very kind) on a Sunday so the waiting time in the queue was 10-15 mins. They could organise it much better.
A. M.
The pool is nice and clean, premises look neat too. I have not tried the gym but the changing room up there looks very nice. I wish I could say the same for the wet changing room which is very confusing and with very few shower spots (which means there is a queue during peak hours)
K. G.
The website has many errors, as you attempt to book the sports hall it says one thing one second and another the next. When you call they can only tell you when the courts are available, and you will have to book then but by then you loose any of the times that are prime time. Also there is no immediate email that can be found easily to contact the castle centre directly to notify them of this problem to get the bookings completed. The centre itself and staff have been most helpful and it is kept smelling and looking clean for those that use the different facilities, just a shame about the booking process.
A. H.
Great facility, clean, new. I never thought I'd be happy swimming a public leisure centre in elephant and castle 3 times a week but this has allowed me to vary my exercise regime and I'm very happy. The Pilates classes here are also brilliant.
A. H.
Great atmosphere inside the building staff very friendly and helpful. It has a sport hall where you can play badminton and basketball. There is a swimming pool for adults and children. There is a gymnasium for those who like to exercise and build muscle. It has a really good cafe which sell all sorts of food and drinks.
J. Q. C.
Fantastic premises+gym+pool with sauna+steam rooms. Excellent value plus Personal Trainers essential for novices for at least 3 sessions to learn how to use vast array equipment and machines safely and to work out a personal plan to follow.
L. W.
The staff mean well but there's so many mess ups with the swimming pool - people given the wrong color bands and kicked out after 10 mins of swimming, people not being told there's a club in or an inflatables session so there's only one lane to swim in etc!
If this happens to you then ask them for a credit note!
V. V.
Good job on the staff changes recently. The rude and unfriendly ones are mostly gone. The new staff are friendlier than the ones before. On the downside, difficult to find a free locker at times - at least half seem to be permanently squatted, which makes availability very limited for people. Time for a de-squatting!
C. C.
New facilities with top notch equipment in the gym. But the staff need much more training, they don't know what they are doing most of the time when booking courts and charging when its meant to be apart of the membership.
Z. A.
Really bad staff and woman at the reception is horrible! So lazy and unbothered. Some people go into the public swimming pool without any wristbands and its chaos in there where kids are running.
S. M.
Crystal is a diamond; scuse the pun. I went in for an induction with Someone feeling quite anxious & she put them right at ease with her friendly approach.
Very thorough. Also the gym is nice & clean 👌🏽
Y. A.
Very nice pool! If you live in the neighbourhood, you can get a free membership card to give you access on Fri, Sat and Sun during certain hours. Definitely worth a visit :-)
Y. S. -. u. t. S.
Most of the comments are correct: it is a very good facility AND most of the very many staff are friendly AND it is getting dirty AND the queues to get in are reminiscent of the Soviet period. Southwark should either make it free and maintain it or run it like a real business and be prepared to let it turn into high value retail units when it fails.
D. K.
Very good leisure center and Gym. Huge badminton court and basketball court. The cwbtre can get busy and some of the customers who frequent this Centre are rude hence aome of the negative reviews. I personally love this place.
S. G.
It's a really nice leisure centre, but I think the gym is missing some essential machines for shoulders and legs.
J. G. R.
Very clean and kind and helpful staff. 25m pool and well equiped gym. Looks quite new. Cafe onsite and hair dryer
B. #.
The Elephant and Castle centre has loads of availability for young and adults especially who are just getting into sports swimming or any other athletics the staff there are quite nice Street in rules and health and safety is there first priority
L. G. R.
Great coaches and good gym equipment - it gets a bit busy sometimes due to their free access to council residents.
M. L.
I play badminton here. The changing rooms are clean. Can't comment on other studios, haven't used them.
K. U.
Newly built leisure centre (about 2 yrs old. Staff are always useless, and they actually have bouncers (no seriously!) - which tells you a lot about the centre!
s.
The music at the gym is very depressing it’s not very motivating or encouraging. If they could change the genre of music or change the radio station that would be great
w. w.
It's a nice gym. Big and clean. Try to avoid free gym and swimming time as there would be a lot, a lot people.
A. H.
Good place, with wet and dry saunas, wish they got one more mid speed sign instead of making it a double lane though.
E. C.
Very nice building and facilities. Everyone is friendly, I’ve been having a lot o fun there.
M. M.
The staff are amazing. Great place to enjoy the Gym.
A. T.
the staff are very ignorant and rude at reception..But the trainer's are lovely and professional reason why i will keep my membership.
R. H.
Great class and the Centre is being well managed and adhering to all the health and safety measures.
L. P.
Brand new gym and pool with good equipment plus digital facities on some kit(eg can plug your phone in and watch while you work)
k. f.
I’m a member and proud! U can conveniently join any class using their app. Very nice!
A. C.
Great experience. Staff very friendly! Russell gave us a fantastic induction to the centre.
A. M.
Good facilities, but changing rooms are not clean and queues are all the time
R.
Amazing gym, always in here every second day getting a nice juicy pump!
P. P.
Great fitness place. Nice people doing workout. It's a fitness place and not a muscle pumping gym
J. K.
Very helpful staff - personal teachers are shining stars . Get in to the class with Deborah, she is the best 😉
C. A.
Very big gym, lot of classes and machines.
I recommend Sunday body pump.
M. B.
Good gym, modern, clean and good equipment. It does get busy.
I. n. S.
It's alright. But the changing rooms and toilets were a couple of times disgustingly dirty with poo laying on the ground.
S. T.
New, spacious and wheelchair accessible. Fully equipped with machines for wheelchair users too.
D. L.
Great gym, friendly and helpful staff

K. R.
Occasionally poor customer service but lovely facilities. Just avoid busy periods!
S. L.
New gym, free for Southwark residents all day Friday, and after 2pm weekends!
D. H.
Clean and well equipped. Best to go off peak as it gets very busy.
H. W.
I gave a 4* to the castle as I play badminton there and made to feel welcome 👍
C. K.
Lockers can only take old pound coins, frustrating when u only have the new ones
S. L.
Great new and quite clean place BUT behaviour of young people in the pool so poor....
