Reviews of Bannatyne Health Club
H. F.
Love the gym, pool, spa, classes. Staff are great and facilities are run well and cleaned well. All the members are super friendly too. No worries about meat head gym goers making you feel like you shouldn't be there :)

I love coming here have been a member for several years, you only get out what you put in at any gym, however I feel the staff are very lacking in certain aspects and walk around with blinkers on, also they don't follow up on issues raised by members. Hence the reason for 3 stars.
M. P.
Lovely gym, great pool and very friendly staff. Nice cafe too!
A.
The whole place is clean, the staff are excellent and friendly, I can't fault them. The gym itself while small is adequate.
If you're wondering they have two squat racks and then one smith machine and then one bench setup for bench press, there's also three or four benches for dumbbell work. They have two cable machines and then a whole host of machines for specific body parts and tonnes of bikes, stairs machine etc and cardio. They also have a plated leg press and overhead press machine.
There is a genuine sense of community there, people know each-other, say hello, have a chat etc. The changing rooms are clean and simple to navigate, you don't need to bring your own padlock as your membership band locks your locker for you.
The swimming pool is nice, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna while small do the job! It's a nice place to go and chill.
The reasons I'm leaving are:
. Squat racks, two isn't enough as they're perpetually busy compared to the surrounding machines (that said, the target clientele of bannatynes is the older generations so a load of squat racks and stuff isn't gonna do it for them). And because the gym is small people are passing by closely behind you as you're trying to do your thing.
. Price - it's expensive! If you're in for the pool, sauna, jacuzzi, spin and coffee side of things, you'll get your money's worth no doubt and it's worth the price. If you're younger or just there to do squats and deadlifts etc. or more into the lifting side of things you're not going to get your money's worth.
I rate four stars for that reason, I can't be angry that it's not the lifting / squat rack filled gym it turns out I need because I'm clearly not their target audience. For who they target, they do an amazing job and it's good to see a place where people are friendly, chatty and all there to be healthy and relax.

man, worth every penny. the gym is essentially brand new and everything is in place. the pool is perfectly heated and the sauna is absolutely lovely. I was a bit wary of paying double most gyms, but it provides so much more than double what they do.
r. m.
Reasonably content with the gym & facilities, albeit small and sometimes too busy for the price.
My main quarell is with the temperature of the steamroom & especially the hot tub. If you're going to list the temperatures upon entry, ensure they are accurate. I understand energy bills have increased however, I have only been twice where the hot tub, is actually hot! £46/month and the facilities are not as advertised...
Also the PTs are young and impersonable. I am not ageist, but if you are going to have PTs at a 'reputable' gym, make them approachable, rather than having ones walking around with their chests pumped out staring at themselves in the mirror.
Bottom line - needs improvement.

Friendly helpful staff. Always kept clean and tidy. Always a pleasure to visit.

My best gym experience to date, and I've been to quite a few gyms in the country. The facilities were well looked after because it was immaculate. The staff are friendly and reasonable prices, well worth the money. The changing rooms and the showers were the best I've seen. I'm a fussy guy when it comes to cleanliness, this gym is spotless. I could not see anything negative about this place. I wish my local gym was this good.

Great gym, nice range of classes, lots of equipment, plus a swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Also excellent cleaning regime and COVID safety procedures.
A. D.
I really nice gym, loads of different activities and classes to do and time to relax in the sauna's and steam rooms after a good gym session/classes. Staff a very polite and helpful, one of the nicest gyms I've been to as a personal trainer.
S. B.
Super friendly staff (receptionist was super friendly and most helpful 18.6.2021 7am). Great facilities. Very clean and welcoming. Sauna and pool are great

I was supprised when i visited Cardiff Bannatyne club today how much better the Newport gym is!
More weight machines in Newport and a much better lay out. Also the Cardiff gym area and changing room needs an update felt old.
The staff at the Newport gym are friendly and the people who train there are generally friendly the place is always clean highly recommended.
D. C.
Always clean, staff is nice and knowledgeable.

Hi I've been there since the day it open, staff are great. It has everything a good gym should have, and a even better health suite. There are cheaper gyms, but not better ones. And right next to where I live.
l. i.
Lovely staff and very friendly and always
helpful. A great atmosphere and very welcoming. Great facilities and very good private disabled changing rooms too. Plenty of things to do. A loverly sauna steam room swimming pool and jaquzie. Nice and clean
S. M.
Not for serious lifters or fitness enthusiasts.
My review mostly discusses the gym area. The pool is fine, small and crowded but that's normal. Changing rooms sometimes smell a bit, but are spacious enough with plenty of lockers. Reception area is pretty nice. Staff are friendly.
PROS
The pros include some curved treadmills which are great for HIIT and most of the equipment they do have is modern. Plenty of weight plates, it's generally clean enough and parking facilities are excellent. It doesn't tend to get obscenely busy even at peak times.
CONS
The weight plates are all modern, but of poor quality, difficult to get on and off the bar, absolutely no use for any kind of Olympic style lifting. That said, I think this is the sort of gym where you'd probably be told off if you started any kind of heavy clean and jerk or snatch that involves dropping the bar from height.
Limited space for any kind of mobility work or stretching, there are two small mats shoved in the corner as you enter which are normally taken.
No area for your own circuits, there just isn't the space for it. It's quite a cramped gym, supersetting can be a challenge in its own right if you have to hop between stations.
No Deadlifting area or platforms forcing you to more or less take up a squat rack when you want to Deadlift. Not usually the end of the world as 90% of people who train there will substitute Bicep Curls for Squats anyway.
One Bench for Bench Press. Need I say more?
It's a small miracle to witness somebody return their plates or dumbbells to where they belong after using them. It really is.
The people : at the risk of sounding like a bit of an elitist, the gym is mostly full of blokes in their 20s wearing gold chains, peaked hats wearing cotton tracksuits and doing bicep curls whilst lifting their tops to look at their abs in between intense staring at any female in the room. You're looked at as a maniac and the whole gym stares if you deadlift heavy and make any noise putting a heavy loaded bar back down, however it seems acceptable to drop 16kg dumbells after chest press.
To sum up, it's mostly fine, but not the place if you're into any kind of specialized lifting or exercise.

Used EV rapid chargers in car park but not the facilities
E.
The best gym I've ever seen. Facilities on 3 floors including steam room & sauna, pool, tons of different classes. Wish the price could be a bit more competitive ;-)
A. B.
I have been a member for seven years. Beung diligent about class participation has helped a lung problem considerably.
Moreover, the staff are caring, dedicated etc.
The cateting is good...and once monthly there is a quiz....with free eats..
Seriously, the place is exceptionally well run.
G. B.
The staff here are really friendly. The facilities are excellent and the place has a buzz about it. Compared with the bannatyne club in Perth, this place is much much better. Food is good and reasonably priced in the on-site cafe
E. F.
Recently had major refurb to all plumbing to pool, poolside showers and shower block. Changing room, cloakroom etc now very modern. At a price though all memberships have been increased. Starbucks? coffee now in place - BRING BACK the old coffee machine. This coffee is awful, at least 2 dozen of the friends I meet in the mornings now all meet for coffee at Blaina Wharf the Marsdens pub down the road. This often leads to lunch therefore Bannatynes missing out on business twofold.
C. W.
Not long joined but so far it's a lot nicer than other gyms I have been to, it's a little expensive but there is lots there, the wetside facilities are lovely and everything is kept clean.
O. H.
The best Health Club I have been to. Friendly staff and the facilities are top notch.

E. H.
Great gym with brand new quiptment and the facilities are always very clean.
Closing hours are very early on weekends especially the pool and spa.
C. S.
So much better than the Cardiff one. Much more and better facilities, staff are lovely and making sure all precautions are taken during Covid
J. K.
Great place to have a swim and charge your car on the Instavolt rapid chargers. Good pool, good jacuzzi, nice hot steam room - all in good condition.
T. F.

(Translated) The gym as such is not bad, it has many machines, a lot of material, quite a few bicycles and running machines... Etc. The pool is 20m long, which can be made a bit short if you want to go swimming seriously. The Jacuzzi and saunas are fine but they are nothing to write home about. You have free courses both in the gym and in the pool that are very very good.
(Original)
