Had a fantastic day doing the sport climbing course with Matt, learnt everything I could've needed and loads of really useful tips that will make life so much easier and more enjoyable, and on top of that spent the day at beautiful crag down the Gower. He's a great instructor and explains everything nice and clearly. Highly recommended!

My husband and I have just completed the two day learn to learn trad course on the Gower peninsula. It was the next step for us having climbed indoors and outdoor sport on and off for a few years. The first day we spent the morning looking at basics with placing gear, building belays and seconded a route. In the afternoon we put what we’d learnt into practice and both lead, set up a belay and seconded a route all under Matt’s watchful eye. The second day was all about getting as much practice as we could in. Matt took us to some crags that were well chosen for our ability level where we spent the day climbing firstly with supervision then Matt taking a step back as the day went on. Matt was great at explaining everything in an easy to understand way. He also took some cool pictures of us climbing. We feel really confident now to get back out on trad routes by ourselves.

We had a half day climbing and abseiling session as a family (children aged 8 and 11) with Matt last week. It was fun and exciting, and exactly what we had hoped for. Matt adapted the activities to how brave different members of the group were feeling. Matt and his assistant were extremely knowledgeable and made the session fun and interesting. I spent a fantastic Saturday afternoon with Matt: cliff climbing, abseiling into sea spray and exploring new walls. He knows each and every inch of this region (has literally written the book!) and was really good at matching our skills to the climbs he chose for my partner and I. I am a little nervous at times with heights, but Matt was really patient and encouraging, and also very safety conscious. I felt really safe climbing with him and as a result I was able to push myself. I am already thinking about how we can come back for a weekend of cliffs, climbing and adventure!

I have had the pleasure of being on a navigation course with Outdoor Matters. Matt has a great delivery style, keeping things real and practical. He was friendly, open, approachable and makes you feel a valued member of the group. Love the seacliff climbing course that we did with Matt. Matt is a very knowledgeable instructor and managed to turn a boring tidal theories to a fun and easy to understand/ remember subject. We have learnt safe ways to do seacliff climbing from planning to abseil anchoring to rescue techniques etc. We have enjoyed the day and learnt plenty, would definitely recommend taking the courses with Matt.

My son (15) and I had a wonderful day trad climbing with Matt. Main objectives were for both of us to acquire more safety and rope skills and get him leading, and for us both to enjoy being on rock again after a little hiatus. Matt succeeded brilliantly, and kept us both entertained. (My son found Matt's appraisal of my rack and kit highly amusing - "what century was this made in" provided much hilarity.... ;-) ) He is super knowledgeable, encouraging, safe, and clearly loves the outdoors and wants to encourage others to appreciate our beautiful environment safely (even the shiny, slippy, polished limestone bits) and respectfully. We both gained a lot from the day, including confidence, and are looking forward to more rock soon. Diolch yn fawr Matt - a superb day, and really great instruction and guidance.

We (myself & my daughter) went for a weekend lead climbing with Matt at The Roaches. Had a fantastic time and learned a lot. Matt is very calm, methodical and patient, never showing any frustration at mistakes. He makes sure everything is done safely and shows you how to develop a routine that makes sure all safety precautions are taken. He’s very encouraging when you’re climbing and gives lots of tips, making every effort to get the climber to try something new and develop their potential. Had a great weekend with Matt, I self taught most of what I do when climbing from a book and YouTube. I can see now that it does not beat the hands on experience from learning with someone very capable and experienced, which Matt is. In one weekend I learnt loads, abseiling with a more task orientated prusik, how to assess kit for wear, which poor kit to look out for when buying kit, tips on reading and selecting guide books, gained confidence in placing trad gear, selecting crags based on weather conditions, logging climbs on the BMC website, tying of at the top of a sport route, setting up a belay for top and bottom, and more I have forgotten to mention. Really enjoyed the whole experience and enjoyed spending the weekend with Matt and Anton!

I had a fantastic weekend on the Vertical Positioning course with Matt down in South Wales. He built a solid, but flexible lesson plan around the techniques I wished to cover from planning a shoot, rope ascension techniques and working with talent. I got to practice everything I learnt in a 'mock' climbing shoot with his four year old little girl Hannah. She's quite a character. Would thoroughly recommend. 5*.
