Reviews of York Sport Village
S. R.
We come here for swimming lessons. The instructors are fantastic and I highly recommend. The lifeguards are so switched on and don't miss a thing, they're clearly very on the ball with training and the reception/swim team staff couldn't be more helpful. Changing areas are clean and well maintained and the pool is lovely.

Used the pool, cycle track and went through the village.
The pool was clean with lots of lanes for swimming lengths.
The cycle track was brilliant, not busy and loved having space and clear tarmac to practice with my road bike. The track has a deceptively sharp turn at the far end, so watch your speed!!
The village is nice to walk through with a coffee shop.

I used the velodrome at this location. The staff were excellent friendly welcoming and made the whole experience very enjoyable. The velodrome is good for an outdoor venue, the profile is a little unusual for a 250 but it is well maintained the only thing I could ask for is maybe a couple of benches to sit on between sessions down there

Love buying from the entrance the blue shorts that I purchased for the person he commented that though's shorts fitted perfectly and may require me too purchase more in this size so will be looking too get the male customer a pair of shorts in a Large in black.
Shame that cannot be said for me the boys shorts would like for a 14 or 15 year old as the 12 year old shorts too tight. The ladies swimming costume may want that colour in a size 14 than 12.
So used your Toilet facilities upstairs instead as tried too use the toilet facilities downstairs but was along wait and there was only 1 toilet not great.
Still like the swimming pool it is quite shallow in what I believed to be the deep end. I did not try the gym out and was not that happy too discover the Coffee shop Costa was not open for business on that day and would need too check in on York sport website page for reopening date also discovered no Coffee vending machine that no longer exists.
But all that said I would still be interested in using York Sport Village that is so close to the property I live in.

I always go to bodypump here, great facilities and always clean. Only downside is that showers are needed for non-members. There is one in the disabled loo but always feel guilty for using this space when it's needed by others!

Visited the 10 year anniversary open day - what a fantastic facility! Staff helpful and friendly, building very clean. Thoroughly enjoyed being shown around.

The best sports facilities in York. Plenty of on site parking spaces and we'll maintained 3G football pitches. 1 full size, 3 5-a-side caged pitches. Indoor 50m pool. Kids pool. Outdoor velodrome. Outdoor spinning classes. Indoor gym.
S. M.
One of the best places to go for a walk in the afternoon. The place is always quite during the summer when students have all left back home. Just imagine in the warm afternoon with cool breeze, you walk with you pets along the flower field and the children are running around. That is amazing!

Signed up to the gym here beginning of the year after a year of only using their pool. It's a tad on the expensive side, so I'd say you need to come at least three times a week to make it worth it. The gym had decent equipment, not everything I'm looking for though; missing a balance bar, resistant bands and a barre. So doesn't seem that catered to flexibility training. The staff are super friendly. They always help with any fitness question, diet, will show you how to use the equipment safely, and are super patient. Definitely think the staff here are way above average compared to other gyms.
Swimming pool is pretty standard. Therr aren't that many open swim sessions though. Always full of classes and other activities. And it's very annoying you have to book to swim. So you have to go on these fixed hour slots. Therefore, everyone is changing and showering at the same time.
Been to a few fitness classes, and they are very good.
Overall positive experience. Just a bit pricey.

York Sport Village is a very large modern building at the side of York University grounds with lots of parking which is very well lit at night. On reception the staff are well organised and helpful. There is a very pleasant reasonably priced cafe to the side which looks on to the massive swimming pool. The changing rooms are clean with lots of lockers. When I went in the late afternoon there were lots of swimming lessons in the smaller pool for little ones and 1/2 the big pool is for lane swimming and the other half for public swimming which is available for use from early til late. My only gripe is that the big pool is always cold, probably because of the size of it. But all in all very good for £5.10 for adult swimming and cheaper if you are a York resident with a York card. This complex houses a large gym among other things.

So after booking swimming lessons for the mini me this has been my first experience as a father of sorting kids and seeing this experience through those eyes. I stood at an empty desk marked Swimming Lessons enquiries only. There was a young chap on another desk. As the time ticked closer towards the start of our first class not once did he glance over and suggest that he dealt with my enquiry. I waited for a bit longer and then took it upon to goto him and he dealt with me, after 'realising' I was waiting 🙄 Anyway found the lessons staff fab and helpful. I went for a coffee only after spilling half of it on the world's most wobbliest tables, however good coffee, reasonable price, polite and pleasant staff. Once the child took off the swimwear I went to locate the swimwear spinner thing. None could be located as there isn't any. Suggestion get some installed for a better user experience. All in all, as weeks have moved on and Covid restrictions lifted , not much has changed tables are still wobbly and wet swimwear is taken home. Staff are mainly young but pleasant enough. Great facility, great lessons, great coffee shop (star removed for both points) great viewing area. Advice, get on the waiting list early so your young duckling learns the life survival skill

Excellent facilities. Set up for kids triathlon, very well organized and very helpful staff

Post lockdown swim. My first time going here. Lovely friendly lady on the front desk and the other staff said hello/good morning. Well laid out and 1 way system in place to maintain social distancing. Very clean environment, lockers take £1 but you get it back. Spacious car park. Lots of life guards on. Pool was clean and lovely temperature. Can't fault the place, looking forward to going back soon!

Great place to play 5-a-side football. 4G pitches are very well maintained.

I went to support my sister & be her mechanic for the Triathlon mid 2021. Lovely place & lovely people! Oh, and my sister smashed the Triathlon too & raised a lot of money for Leeds mind charity 😁 I'd recommend a visit if you're into your sports or find out when the next event is being held to even go spectate! Maybe even raise some money for charity too!
F.
This is a great facility with good friendly staff although the only thing I would recommend them to do better is return calls to customers trying to book swimming sessions!
S. H.
Good facilities great sized pool would of given it a 5 but everytime I visit the kids pool seems to me closed and they love to swim across the pool instead up and down wich is kind of annoying ...especially when I have a rotary cuff tear and it's harder for me to swim out the way than it is for me to swim forward .
O. C.
The jacuzzi is out of order for many weeks. Wondering if it is gonna be fixed.
C. D.
Love the pool it’s my go-to for lane swimming
S. W.
Pool good, would like to be able to have a daily membership. When visiting York and wanting to do some fitness training, a daily rate would suit me.
P. W.
Very clean and well run with friendly, efficient staff.
J. M.
Completed a trial period at YSV and impressed with the variety. It’s a bit out of the way from York centre but has an excellent bus service, large bicycle and car park areas. Gym is big, with equipment in excellent condition and wide variety. Pool is a bonus too. Shower facilities are really good, clean and plenty of space.
Large number and variety of classes which you have to book in advance. The more popular ones are often full so have to keep checking each day for cancellations. The floors in the fitness studios were very slippy but that didn’t bother many people, just me for some reason? Online booking system is convenient and works well, it only needs slight adjustments to make it more straight forward to use.
Staff seem nice, no hard sell to join or leave. Had very little staff interaction during membership due to the electronic band system. Offer lots of introduction discounts and membership prices are excellent value for money compared to other fitness facilities in York.
D. P.
We loved this place for years now we can get back in the swimming pool and gim it's made me and others very happy. Keep safe and keep fit.
A. B.
They’ve done really well at creating ways to get changed for lessons in Covid. Efficient and friendly! Our four year old loves his swimming lessons too
L.
A lot of fun with kind staff and lots of different activities to choose from
T. C.
Excellent facility and the water play area in addition to the kids pool was a welcome surprise. Kids were beaming from the moment they got there until we left, upon which they were not so happy any more!
A. M.
Only a few people in the pool so social distancing was easy and the changing rooms were clean and well equipped with sanitiser products
t.
Love it! The staff are all helpful and polite, It does get busy but it is massive so there is plenty of room to fit everyone in, I have been going almost every day at different times and I have not had to wait for a machine yet. The gym is air conditioned so its nice and cool. The changing rooms are nice and clean with a spinner to wring your shorts after swimming and cubicle showers.
The pool is a good size, the water is on the cool side which is fine for me, the training pool is much warmer and does get full quickly on the weekends. there is a cafe that sells Costa and i think they do sport shakes as well as food etc?
The PAYG changing rooms are also nice, I had to use these as i took my toddler swimming, the lockers require a pound I will remember that for next time! the shower temp is adjustable.
It is a great place and worth a look.

I live "down South" and although my leisure centre did do online classes, I just found that York Sport's were more fun. It was truly amazing to just rock up to classes and pay nothing and then to be allowed to continue with on demand classes after the centre reopened. Well done to all at York sport for your forward thinking and thank you for all your support with my fitness
D. F.
I have been a member of this gym since they opened. The Les Mills classes are amazing as are the the self employed instructors whom run the classes. The classes run by the gym themselves are poor by comparison. York Sport is never very clean, particularly in sauna, steam room and changing rooms. My last moan is they never answer the phone, it's permanently on answer phone! Sorry York Sport, it wouldn't take much but you could be so much better, a lot of it is simply down to staff training.
T. J.
Great facilities, very clean and staff are very friendly and helpful would definitely recommend this gym
C. B.
An hour at the velodrome. Excellent tuition. Its about 65 years since i last rode fixed wheel. Thoroughly enjoyed riding a banked track.
C. A.
Decent gym. Nice facilities and staff are great. Wish they had more squat racks as they are essential to a good gym
S. T.
Currently at the time of typing this we are in clutches of the Covid19 pandemic. York Sport Village however has done a absolutely fantastic job of preparing the gym to be ready for reopening for the public in a safe manner, everything is clearly set out, staff are on hand to help out and generally it feels like a safe place to be. Great job to all YSV staff!
S. A. P.
This place is a good spot for all things sport. I use it for the Velodrome primarily and the outdoor Velodrome is a fantastic asset York has to offer. The place is open to all abilities and ages and is open regularly. There's also a closed cycle circuit and there are regular events on there too. An ideal place to visit if you're into cycling!

First time visiting, everything is brilliant except one small aspect...hygiene! I brought my family here today around 3pm and I’m guessing this time is not the best for using the swimming facilities if you are expecting any hygiene levels to be met. I kid you not, the smell dotted around the swimming changing area stunk of urine. Now I understand this can occur in swimming areas but when I’m walking bare foot on the floor and changing my family I don’t expect to be worried on what I may be stepping in. I want to be smelling bleach not pee! Is there not a mid day clean down? It’s really off putting. Secondly, and this screams to me that who ever is cleaning...is not cleaning sufficiently, when it came to place my baby on a pull down changer there was dry poo flakes in the corners. I just feel like is it a case of out of site out of mind? This could do with a wipe down also rather than coming down with a tummy bug. I don’t expect much...but hygiene in a swimming facility other than just the pool is a big big must!!

Its a great gym with good equipment and facilities. The only donwside is that it is terrible for providing for students. If you wish to pause the account you need to do it one month in advance, thus in effect they steal £30 a three times a year.
M. S.
Great facility for sport in York, especially for students. There are a lot of classes daily and prices and deals are good. In addition there are also a pool and other gym studios. It is pretty far from the uni but the bus between the two campus is free.
C. R.
Facilities are excellent - changing rooms, gym, studios, sauna, spa etc. all really good quality and well looked after.
My main problem is the amount of people that the Sport Village are signing up. I joined in Jan 2014 and go to the gym around 5-6 times a week. When I joined, I had no problem booking on to classes or using the gym whenever I wanted. Now its a different story - you have to book classes 10 days in advance to even get a space on them or show up anyway in the hope there's a space going. The gym is always crowded, even at 9am and the numbers keep growing. When I was there yesterday I saw 4 new people having a gym induction. Surely they should realise that they don't have the space/time/staff/equipment to cope with any more members and just have a membership cap! It might mean that they earn less money but it may also stop disgruntled regulars leaving.
M. C.
Positive: Great gym and swimming pool. New equipment, clean place. Helpful staff.
Negative: Sometimes a bit too crowded. Jacuzzi a bit small, same with the two saunas. People using these facilities are sometimes too loud (especially foreigners from Asian countries who might not be familiar with the British culture yet).
I would give 4.5 stars if I could :)
R. R.
Excellent facility with great coaching. Very enjoyable for youth groups and adults alike.
S. R.
Great facility, went with group of juniors who loved it, fantastic experience.
L. K.
Back after lockdown. They've done an amazing job at reshuffling everything. I hope showers will open soon. The sweaty drive home is not pleasant at all.
J. W.

Modern facilities. Easy to find, easy to park. Interesting cycling circuit too.
F. L.
Excellent facilities, however sometimes it becomes very crowded (6-8 pm). The price is ok for the amount of facilities. Gym, Pool, Cycling Facilities, Cafe, Fitness Suite, Hot Jacuzzi, Steam Room and Dry Sauna.
A. H.
Staff very good,Swimming pool, showers etc very much upto scratch,

So welcoming, understood my needs and very patient. A great return to fitness.

It's just getting busier and busier :-( The car park is jammed and booking onto classes is too protracted. The gym staff need to get more involved with whats going on, I think they should always say hello and goodbye and ask if you need any help with anything. As an idea too manage busy gym periods staff should tell offending members not to sit idle on benches during peak times, seriously some guys just sit starring at themselves :-( they need to mop the male changing rooms more, many swimmers don't use the trunk dryer gadget and opt to wring there swimmers on the floor which when mixed with talcum powder turns into a delightful foot cheese paste. But the price of membership is cheap so I guess in this case you get what you pay for.
A. W.
Great facility for all! It's a must try!
