Reviews of Sandeman-Allen House (Bayswater)
5 star service from the management and staff. Plenty of food for breakfast and a 3 course meal every weekday evening and weekend lunchtime. 100 metres from Kensington gardens. Easily Londons best hostel.
I living here almost 5 months the place is very beautiful and the food is also good it has gym inside good prices everyday cleaners and also amazing staff i recommend for long stay.
Very good hostel for a good price. I stayed at a 2-person dorm for 17 pounds with breakfast included, which is much better than the neighboring hostels with 8-16 people per dorm with bunk beds. The dorm is quite spacious and has good amenities, no bunk beds. Breakfast is ok. The only problem is - the staff is ridiculously rude
Great price for a twin-share, but cleaning never happened on 2nd floor. No fridge facilities and only having a microwave available for guest use also let it down.
No common room but has a gym (although everyone can see straight into gym which is weird). Front desk staff are friendly and helpful. Hostel is very well heated throughout.
Best hostel in london!
I got a single room in this place and it is Worth the money! Nice view from my room. Single bed pretty standard. I got 2 cupboards with loads of hangers. Can borrow iron from the reception. I got 2 sets of study tables as well. There’s a sink and mirror in my room. Shared toilet but its fine coz it wasnt busy. Free breakfast wasnt great, only cereal and bread. Sometimes eggs (they only allow u to take ONE, the waiter is cute but strict about food lol). Wifi good speed. Room was clean but floor could be cleaner. Reception was great, he go through everything! Also they dont provide towels but u can rent it for £6 or buy it for £9. Location great, near queensway and bayswater tube, souvenirs shops, restaurants and tesco. Theres even a mall with cinema nearby.
The hostel was well located, really easy for tube stations and Hyde Park. As far as the room went though it wasn't particularly great, long term guests has basically converted the room into a flat with all the worldly possessions it seems. They were nice enough in the room and it was fine for me not being surrounded by fellow travellers. I definitely wouldn't recommend if you want a proper hostelling experience with other travellers though.
I enjoyed my stay in Sandeman Allen House, the stay was good. Staff were really friendly and helpful, and the area is really well connected with London center and Heathrow Airport.
I would recommend it for young people that want to stay in a central and quiet area.
I stayed a long period in the hostel and I really appreciate it. It's s good quality price.
lived in a 6-bed dorm for one year during my study. Cheap and amazing location. One unpleasant thing is that one roommate snoozed unbelievable loudly, also turned light on even after 2am and eat smelly food in the dorm.
Considering the price it was fine. Good service and friendly staff. Toilets and showers a bit funky.
I stayed here for around five months, through the second and into the third covid lockdowns.
I can’t recommend Sandeman-Allen more as a place to stay. It is excellent value and includes two meals per day, breakfast and a larger cooked meal. Full English breakfast is even available on Saturdays for no extra charge! It is very flexible as well, with just one week notice needed before leaving, making it easy to adapt to these uncertain times.
Sandeman-Allen is just two minutes walk from Hyde Park (I timed how long the walk took!) and there are good Tube links and local shops (when they are open...).
The best thing about staying here, though, is how friendly the staff and volunteers are. They really make you feel welcome and at home there.
The next time I need an extended stay in London I think it might well be with the LHA.
Thanks, guys!
Good prices, a great location, I had a good time...
but the place is really really dirty .. especially the bathrooms.
By choose Sandeman Allen House for my stay, where I can easily do my trip to Bath, Oxford and Windsor Castle. Staff were really friendly and helpful, Adrian carried my luggage to my room when elevator is not working. I have a single room, and it is simple clean room. Breakfast is really simple, you can only take one boiled egg, one small yogurt, no meat at all.
Was a VERY Central location with Bayswater and Queensway underground just by the corner. Funky Market and all efficient supermarkets close by. Even a Casino!! And loads of restaurants nearby. The food served was nice as well. Not bad for me to get choosy since it was my first time in English environment. Very friendly Staff OMG! From the receptionist to the live in cooks , supervisor and cleaners. Friendly co lodgers as well! The diversity and family oriented lifestyle there was unbeatable. I defintely recommend for first timers. Also . Their security policy is very detailed.
Pretty nice but very small shower and flat pillows... otherwise clean and reasonable
Situated just off Bayswater Road, short walk from Hyde Park and several transport links.
The hostel provides a high quality accomodation on a short or long term basis, offering rooms ranging from Single Deluxe to 6-bed dorms. Each room is served by high speed internet and has a lockable cupboard and wardrobe, sink and mirror.
Considering its location it is very worth every penny.
There is a canteen kitchen that provides 2 meals a day and free flow coffee - a TV study and laundry room. The staff and management are the absolute best in the trade, and very helpful in numerous languages.
Simple and pocket-friendly place right in the one of the main parts of the london city. You can't beat this place in price. Common food area and shared and unshared rooms with bunker beds.
Service is ok they even have a dports gym which is rare for this price. Showers are too small . Overall ok value
Sandeman has been my home for 6 months in London. The location is great and close to the subway, what’s more, hyde park is next door!
The staff is very nice and helpful, whenever I had a problem they helped me. The price includes breakfast and dinner, plus there is a free gym! Now they have done reforms and the rooms have new furniture and many comforts, like a fridge in each room.
Whenever I visit London I stay in Sandeman without thinking about it, the staff and volunteers have become my second family! I am very grateful for the treatment received in this place and I’m looking forward to coming back soon.
I recommend this hostel 100%.
A good place with a right price, near to Victoria Station and a lot of beautiful places.
It meets the expectations of a hostel. Very reasonably priced for the setting
Stayed here for just over 4 weeks, was meant to be longer but had to change my plans slightly. However, the staff have been beyond helpful and go out of their way to accomodate at every point.
The facilities are exactly what you'd expect, everything in common use is cleaned daily, and rooms get cleaned once a week (unless you request to not have cleaners come in) and ammenidies are what you'd expect from the description. There is plenty of bathrooms/showers to go around, everything works fine. some of the bathrooms/showers are on the smaller size, but it is really nothing to be complained about.
Food is provided twice a day. The portions are very generous and it is good quality/balanced meals, especially considering they cook in such large quantities. And as a vegetarian, I was always catered for just as well as any meat dish, which is unfortunately often rare. So no complaints there.
But what really makes the stay is all the staff being beyond helpful. They are friendly and welcoming, and made for an excellent stay. Due to the current epidemic they provide room service for meals and will accomodate self-isolation in every way, including providing private rooms at no extra cost for the duration of the isolation. So that is beyond fantastic.
Really can not recommend enough, and will be staying again. The hostel is honestly the best I have been to for the price and location, and I have stayed in many of the hostels around this area before.
nice hostel with free breakfast and even dinner! Dinner is really great!
I stayed at this property for a little over two months, from late September to early December. I really enjoyed it, all the staff were friendly and helpful, always willing to help you. The location is the highlight, with three lines of the underground a few meteres and you can get to Notting Hill in ten minutes on foot, so that we can visit Portobello market every Saturday morning. Italian cooks are very good. Also, it gives you a chance to meet people from all over the world. I recommend it.
Awesome place to stay. Excellent customer service.
Great place ... clean and good bed
Great place. Clean, professional staff.
Clean hostel in a nice central area!
Needs better pillows but very good for the price
Really lovely and professional staff, always clean, fantastic location
Its a really good otel
Good for the price is ok
If I could give this property 6-7 stars I definitely would! It's a great place to stay for sure, hospitality is amazing. Especially reception staff/porters are so helpful and attentive. Whenever you need help, it will be sorted in a prompt manner. Property itself is well maintained and looked after. My stay was amazing which is I'm very thankful for! I don't have enough words to express my gratitude towards the experience I've been provided. Thank you so much for everything!
Very good for students.
It's my house!
Nice lodge
Nice place to live
Nice
Good Hotel.
Nice place 😊☺️ 😊☺️😊☺️☺️
A great place to stay for long stays. Very well located, central, from where you can walk to other places, and with very good transport links to reach more remote areas. You can also enjoy nature, as Hyde Park is a 3-minute walk from the hostel. I've been living there for six months, and it's been a pleasure! The facilities are very good, as is the cleanliness (which is important in times of COVID). The staff and volunteers are all very friendly, and there's a great atmosphere. Special mention to Jacob (the assistant manager), who is always concerned that everything is okay and there are no problems, and with whom everything is a laugh. Without a doubt, if I return to London, I would choose Sandeman-Allen to call my home again for a while. We miss you, little family ♥️
(Translated) Very good address to reside in London. The staff are young, friendly and dynamic. Great location in central London at the foot of Hyde Park. It is very easy to book and the deposit is not too expensive.

Très bonne adresse pour résider à Londres. Le personnel est jeune, sympa et dynamique. Très bien situé dans le centre de Londres au pieds d'hyde Park. Il est très facile de réserver et le deposit n'est pas trop cher.
I stayed here for about 3 months in a private room with breakfast and dinner included in the price. The right-sized room has everything you need for a long-term stay (a wardrobe, a sink, a bedside table, desk and a small wardrobe). The room is cleaned 5 times a week and the level of cleanliness depends on the staff that is there in each month as it changes continuously depending on the volunteers who offer work for free accommodation. Perfect location, 100 meters from Hyde Park. Friendly staff (again, it depends on the period). Possibility of checking in and checking out at any time. Right breakfast, English breakfast on Saturdays. Very good lunches/dinners. Small and basic gym. Clean common spaces. Clean shared bathrooms and shower. I must say that I was lucky to get a single room a little isolated from the rest and not very noisy. The experience also depends a lot on the type of room you take.
I have been living in this hostel for more than one year, and I have no words to describe how grateful I'm for living here.
The hostel has a very good environment. The staff team is always very helpful and friendly, always trying to give you the best service. Sandeman is a very good place to meet new people and make friends. The location is also great. The hostel is located two minutes walk from Bayswater and Queensway station, close to Notting Hill, with Hyde Park literally around the corner, and with a street full of supermarkets, restaurants, and shops.
If you are looking for a place in London, I would definitely recommend this hostel. Sandeman has a special vibe that makes you feel like home.
The place is very central, 1 minute from the shops that are part of the 2 stations that are located on the same street as Bayswater and Queensway. The rooms are very clean, the bathrooms and showers are outside the rooms. They have a small patio next to the canteen. Of course the staff and volunteers are lovely!
As a hostel, it is really good compared to expectations. The location is great! Next door is London's Old China Town, which has a lot of Chinese food, Chinese and Korean supermarkets, and fast food restaurants. There are two subway stations within 2-4 minutes, namely the central line and the district/circle line. The transportation is also very convenient. The only thing that some people may not be used to is that the bathrooms and toilets are shared here, but they are everywhere in the whole building. Don't worry about not having a place, there will be people cleaning them every day, and you will gradually get used to it. Another thing that I like best personally is that the rental time is very flexible! Because I couldn't decide how long I would stay due to personal reasons, I looked for countless places to stay, and basically decided on how long I would stay at the beginning. You can stay here forever, just tell the front desk a week before you want to leave! The staff there are also very nice, and many issues can be discussed. If you are not used to living with others, there is also a single room option. Of course, it is just a hostel, and people who are very demanding may complain about it. After all, it is an old building with age. Although it is not a luxury hotel, it looks very stylish from the outside! Anyway, for me, its advantages completely outweigh the disadvantages! (PS Living here also has a small gym and includes two meals, which is really great!)
A great hotel close to Hyde Park and public transport. Queensway Tube Station and Bayswater Station are just minutes away. Clean, with an elevator. The staff are very friendly.
Positive points:
- You can make friends for the occasion and perhaps stay in touch with them.
- They speak several languages all day long, which is good for improving your English, especially, and other languages as well.
- You can study quietly during the hours when the residents are out, which is convenient.
- Most of the staff members who work there are friendly, which is a pleasure. I'd like to thank the French manager/chef for his work (don't hesitate to speak to the Spanish employee if you see this message).
- There is almost always someone from the staff at reception.
- There is a gym.
- Two meals a day, every day, and a TV in the secondary dining room.
All these advantages mean that there aren't many free rooms, let alone shared rooms... obviously, this is my personal and recent experience, but it may change (for the better, I hope, for future guests!).
On the other hand, there are several negative points:
- The price for a single room! £220 a week for a tiny space with a bed and a bunch of furniture (one of which is broken) that serves no purpose and takes up space, plus a sink that makes noise night and day—that's a lot, even for London. - The showers are either very dirty or the water flow isn't strong enough, even though a team of volunteers has to clean them every day (see photos).
- The team that cleans the room only emptied the trash, no real cleaning, and there are plenty of dust bunnies.
- There's a bathtub on the 3rd floor, but there's no plug, so unless you've planned ahead, you can't use it.
- There's not much variety in the meals; they always serve the same things.
- There's a Spanish employee who's part of management and who is disrespectful to anyone who isn't native Spanish. Even if you speak the language of Cervantes, he'll interrupt you and treat you more like a child than a paying customer. Honestly, I left the day he told me I was only talking nonsense. Not to mention that his verbal language makes it immediately clear that you're nothing to him... I hope LHA management sees this message because I also left because of his behavior. Disrespect is unacceptable from an employee of a property where people live and sleep.
-The Spanish employee refused to let me check out on the pretext that he had closed the "billing software" when it was only 3 p.m. and that, according to him, I hadn't notified him that same day. But if the guy had done his job, he would have noted on a piece of paper that the guest (me) had told him, and only him, that I was leaving the premises on such and such a day and time, and if he didn't mind. He barely heard me and then preferred to continue his conversation in Spanish with a Catalan woman.
- There's a young Italian guy with glasses, an LHA employee (he occasionally wears the black polo shirt with the LHA logo on it, and I've seen him working at reception). Anyway, it's so strange to say it like that, but he doesn't talk to men, only men. It's frankly bizarre. This is the first time I've seen an unfriendly Italian guy... in fact, some people have explained to me that he just doesn't like talking to anyone who isn't a girl. And he makes that clear by speaking sharply.
- Some residents smoke DRUGS inside the facility at night so as not to arouse suspicion, but it smells all over the hallway, and frankly, no one likes being woken up in the middle of the night by the smell of burning and smoke.
- You can hear doors slamming all the time, so if you're a light sleeper, you're going to hate the place.
Last bit of information: They're going to have to make some adjustments starting mid-March, so the top floor (4th) should be closed.
The location is perfect, close to 2 subway stations, surrounded by 2 markets, souvenir shops and currency exchanges (competition makes everything very cheap). The breakfast is all you can eat. Boiled eggs, sliced bread, yogurt, butter, jams, milk, cereals. The 1-bed accommodation is great, but the bed is not very comfortable. Hot water in the shared showers. What made the experience bad were the bathrooms. There was not enough water to wash everything :-/. Great place, but it does not have all the support for a young backpacker, it is very residential. And it is cheap.
Wonderful memories of youth... It was the summer of 1990...
I have to come back to see you...
Comfortable and clean, quick and easy check in and very friendly staff
(Translated) Nice place and good prices also near the city

Bonito lugar y buenos precios ademas cerca de la cuidad
I have lived there 9 months and I recommend it but as something temporary
Excellent
I have booked a private room. The room and all facilities are very tidy and clean. There's cleaning service on weekdays. The cooking and cleaning staffs are nice. The most reception guys are just so-so. But I really like the cleanliness and peace of this hostel.
Well
This is a very good value for money place. First of all the area is amazing central close to amenities and next to Hyde Park. The building is beautiful and newly refurbished inside. Clean bathrooms and showers staff welcoming and always with a smile on their face. Management vigilant on safety and keeping everything running efficiently. A very homy place which hardly feels like a hostel.
Good sized room, all kept relatively clean. Dinner provided is decent and plentiful, no complaints here. The reception was also very friendly and helpful when checking in.
The neighborhood is very central and also near underground; it's provided of all type oh shops and very beautiful. Food is good and variuous and also the rooms are comfortable and very nice. Staff is helpful and polite. I recommend this place for a great holiday in London.
Great price and lovely location. Rooms were spatious, provided the amenities we needed and there was a breakfast included!
