I've only ever been for the Sunday roasts, but they are excellent. One of the few pubs that stayed open during lockdown. They also do deliveries for a reasonable price.
S. J.
Great atmosphere, really down to earth. Played here in my band, and we were treated really well by the venue and the promoter. Had a great evening, even squeezed in some pool!
F. P.
Pub is grotty in a good way- good atmosphere, fair prices and live music. Definitely wouldn’t want to sleep the night in the hostel though as the place and area starts to feel a bit unsafe after 10pm.
M. W.
Ha lovely place, quite quiet in the day but usually with music on. Soul and funk on the occasions I've been but I'm sure they mix it up. Bands are on regularly in the evenings too, were I've heard it gets busy. Cheap pool table and decent smoking area just by a big bus that sells pizzas. The place itself is a little raggedy in places but I quite like that. It's very strongly associated with a Deptford flavour of left wing politics - anarchists, squatters - that sort of thing. Would recommend
S. S.
New bar layout means much more room for seating as well as watching the bands, either right up front or further back with high tables to keep your drinks on. What’s more… massive garden area so there’ll always be space to rock up. Can’t beat the burgers, veggie/vegan and meat. Breakfast burritos YES PLEASE! I could live on these though I try not to… Best pub in London! And free music most every weekend too. The staff are absolutely amazing 🤩
D. P.
A rare and proper music venue where the locals know good music is on and turn up because the vibe is always cool!
J. B.
Nice surprise after couple of years nicely refurbished, so much space and good vibe;)
D. P.
One of my favourite pubs in the country. Great atmosphere and people are lovely here.
A. B.
Brilliant pub in deptford, music night here were amazing and hopefully post pandemic they'll keep the tradition alive. Sunday roasts are equally well talked about and a great friendly atmosphere. Worth a visit if you're local
G. F.
Excellent late night Dub reggae on a regular, good beer, good people.
k. l.
Everything was great but needs to place a bit more attention on cleanliness, toilets were filthy.
V. L.
Lovely Sunday Roast here, potatoes were amazing! Full of flavour and super crispy!! Portions were massive too, highly recommend!
m. j.
WHAT A GREAT NIGHT AT THE BIRD'S NEST PUBLIC HOUSE OFF DEPTFORD HIGH STREET 🍸🍺👌
WITH LANDLORD PHILL AND CASSIE WHO MADE THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE A BLAST😂😂😂😂😂
WELL DONE #THEBIRDSNEST👌🍺🍸👀❤❤
S. R.
Love this place. Amazing food. Great atmosphere, live music and community champions who stepped up during lockdown to help so many. You have to try the burgers. Gorden Ramsey loves them to😋👍❤️
P. T.
Banging night thanks to the live music and great atmosphere.
D. O.
Been planning to try the Sunday Roast for a while but it ended up being very disappointing:
- Roast potatoes were burnt and bitter
- Chicken roast was a paltry 1/3rd of a breast with a tough, dried out drumstick
- Mixed Roast was missing lamb
- And top it all off.. £6 for a tiny, dry piece of tart the size of an iPhone.
I know from experience that Sunday roast doesn't translate well to delivery, but even taking that into account there were too many issues with our meal to overlook.
c.
Just ordered a mixed roast dinner and all i can say is WOW!
Delivered on time, it was hot and had very generous portion sizes. Well worth the money.
Off for a snooze now.....
S. S.
Had a Christmas lunch delivered from The Birds Nest, was a little worried as didn't know what to expect.
WOW is all I can say, it was fantastic. Food delicious and hot, with all the extras, including crackers, napkins and sauces included and delivered on time.
Thank you for a lovely lunch, would definitely have again.
D. E.
Never thought the birds nest would offer a clean family type vibe, after having spent many a debaucherous night there a few years ago, before moving out of deptford. But the transformation is sublime, food is really tasty, with well thought out and locally sourced artisan ingredients, and 5 star coffee for afters. Professional and friendly staff too! Not the crazy place I used to know, but it hasn't lost its personality, or sold out like other pubs in the area.
S. O.
The best rock 'n' roll boozer in South London.
A. C.
There are some solid amazing people here, regardless of when you visit
The beds are simple comfy, once in your bed it's quiet and no stress
Lovely Lovely people
Thanks, I will definitely visit again, Andrea 🙏
A. T.
Fantastic place good beer, good food, good music, great staff
S. H.
One of the last holdouts of anarchic punk pubs left! A bastion of free thought and fighting the system. The people are really friendly, the food is good, the beer is good. And its not yet another deptford/greenwhich place trying to look edgey with the faux fake history. Its the real deal.
One of my favourite places
S. M.
A very interesting and vibrant local bar. It has a strong comnunity identity. I found staff friendly and attentive, good beers on offer. They also sell food, and hold various music events and exhibitions.
It reminds me of how places like this have a history, and certainly has its own style. The toilets are extraordinary, with layers and layers of graffiti, that it becomes a work of art in itself.
Fairly relaxed atmosphere, seems to be the Hart of the community and has a pool table. If you want something different it's worth a visit.
B. G.
Been coming to this place for years, glad it's back open. It has a great alternative vibe and they book amazing bands.
J. K.
I absolutely loved it here! For only £12 a night one can't complain and to those who do, go somewhere else! I can only describe the vibe here as being eclectic/punk/alternative/hippy and it's a cool! It's a cultural melting pot which is a credit to the English people on how they have embraced other cultures. Joel the owner is a really nice guy and runs a tight ship. And Roger, a worker there, is also really friendly and helpful. The place was cleaned every day and there was even a fumigation done when I was there. I particularly liked the secured lockers at the end of the beds and the curtains surrounding them for extra privacy. The music is not too loud in the women's dorm and ends every night at 11pm. There are plenty of places in town to buy cheap food as well. Overall, top marks to Joel and his crew for a memorable stay. All the best guys!
V. I.
A unique and original london pub with live bands. Not a hipster in sight!it's rough and ready!
Great atmosphere and good service.
Always very good music and lots of live performances.
Food is great and great collection of beers and wine.
This place always has something special!
Usually earlier is quite but after 21:00 starts buzzing!
L. P.
The best alternative free live music venue in London!
And contrary to another review. I've been a regular to the Nest for almost two decades, and neither myself or any of the other regulars I've asked. Have ever seen a bloody rat in there! Some people will do anything to discredit a place they don't personally like. Terrible behaviour.
L. a. R.
Cracking little venue for live music. A small stage with the crowd up close and personal for a uniquely intimate gig experience
Prices for drinks are good, bar staff are nothing short of excellent. All told it's worth checking out if you're over that side of London.
G. R.
Ordered take away roast during lockdown...£10.50 for a big ol' plate of chicken, veg and gravy. Worth every penny and more! Will definitely be ordering again and as soon as possible I'll be visiting the bar after lockdown is lifted.
Cheers guys ❤️
R. P.
This pub has an incredibly weird layout and has the most graffiti strewn toilets I have ever seen. There is an art gallery section plus the tiniest music stage where wonderful bands play. Outside there is plenty of seating. A good variety of drinks at modest prices by London standards are available and the staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. The kitchen was closed when I was there so can't comment about food.
The 47 bus runs past and Deptford station is only a few minutes away so the place is easy to get to. I went to see a band play and would happily do so again but should one be in the area it's fine for a pint or two.
C. M.
One if the only true punk minded pubs left in London. Good food, decent beer and prices. They play live music most nights and the standard is often high. I've been on the stage and propping up the bar. Always a laugh. Full of characters.
s. h.
This pub is as crusty as they come. Which is a good thing, in my book. A hugely varied clientele, a decent selection of pints offered at a lower price than average combined with almost non-stop live gigs create a pub that, if you happen to be in Deptford, you just have to visit. The live acts vary massively from one to the other, sometimes there are themes to the acts, and other times they just seem to be put on together at random. The music starts at about eight and I wouldn't arrive early. The pub is actually quite cramped on gig nights so it might be a good idea to drink somewhere else first, depending on your desire for a seat. I have seen some fantastic acts here. Take a chance on some names you don't know and you might hit the jackpot! I visited a week or so ago and some delicious food was offered for free, in-between acts, which was very generous. Visit the birds nest and help yourself to a big slice of crusty South-London brilliance. It's what Camden used to be like and, in my book, that's a good thing.
R. Z.
The bird's-nest has a superb community spirit. Where would we be without it. Join the family.
J. S.
Great band (Crow Jayne) tonight!😅
A. R.
Just had an amazing burger and fries. Great atmosphere, amazing staff!! Would definitely recommend.
J. H.
Very small venue in Dalston with possibly the smallest stages for live music in London - also has the worst lighting of any venue in London- but still attracts great musicians to play - usually for free. Definitely worth a visit to sample the great atmosphere
T. H.
Alternative/metal music bar in the heart of Deptford. Selection of layers and craft ales (none of the latter were available when I was here). Small gig venue at the back. Fun place, loud music, serves food. Reminds me of a cheap "World's End" pub.
B. D. J.
My bus got blocked on the roundabout for over 2 hrs and the manager Joe made me a cracking cup of coffee free of charge, an absolute diamond, great guy. Great coffee. Thank you x
I. S.
I popped in here with a couple of friends for a viewing of the private photography exhibition, and was very impressed with this venue.
It’s a small traditional British pub, with a bar in the middle. Very cosy and the crowd was very friendly in here. The staff was very welcoming and efficient. They have a great selection of beers & local ales, and their burgers are simply the best and very good value too.
The only downside - there are no cycling racks outside or anywhere near the pub. All the cyclist are attaching their bikes to the fencing rails, with isn’t very secure.
C. C.
Awesome burgers! Great little place with a lot of character. Little rough on the edges but it all adds to the charm of the place. Staff are lovely too. Super helpful and smiley! They look after their locals
s. m.
Top punk and music pub and venue! Love the outsider atmosphere!!
J. A.
Really nice ales, great music. Unlike any other pub I've been to in London. At weekends there's usually great live music on. Takes all sorts. Real community pub. Well worth a visit.
F. C.
Bloody decent pup man.
If this isn't one of the best chilled pubs, then there isn't a chilled pub around.
H. L.
A lovely place with a great atmosphere. We had a delicious Sunday roast - just the thing after a night out! Sadly hardly any gravy. The exceptional Bloody Marys made up for it however.
B. F.
Quite fun music-orientated pub. Eclectic clientele, arty. Food available though didn't taste it. Portions looked huge - not always a good thing! Shame there was only one cask ale on tap at the time of my visit (but loads of generic premium lagers).
C. H.
Nice bar staff reasonable prices
D.
Great atmosphere, great food, great beer and great prices! One of the best places in the area for fun live music. Nobody seems to take themselves too seriously and everyone is welcome! One of my favourite pubs!
B. E.
Great intimate venue to see and hear bands up close. Some tables, chairs and a weathered Chesterfield which adds to the atmosphere. Food available but I didn't dine.
G. W.
Lovely first visit - really welcoming and nice to have a few safe outside beers in the sun!
P. M.
I was told a band I heard of was playing there ("Mono de Azucar") and loved their music. The place has a relaxed coil atmosphere with a lot of character, it was described by a friend as "What a good London pub used to be 20 years ago"
S. W.
One of two great pubs in Deptford (the other is the Royal Albert).
Great characters both sides of the bar, decent beer and great live music; heaven.
J.
Queer friendly punk pub. Vegan menu. Mixed crowd. The sort of place that has resisted local gentrification and stood firm. Go give them your custom.
C. I.
Well, this is a nice place to stay. The staff are very friendly, they have a bar down stairs , which is really interesting. This is still a hostel so, do not expect a 5 star HoTel service.

Tight packed, hot, noisy...perfect venue for lively punk rock gigs. Chunky chips are delicious too!
R. c. M.
The beds are so comfortable! Great night's sleep and plenty of room for bags and changing, etc. Right around the corner from the station and Lewisham centre. Well worth a visit for a short stint.
D. B.
Proper punky piratical vibey old skool pub. Spacious, decent beers, big outside covered smoking area with food stalls, really interesting punters of all walks of life. Regular live music and the last night I was there some rinsing reggaeton and salsa playing loud!
M. M.
Who doesn't love the birds nest? What can I say? How to describe it? Really basic, old fashioned, local hang out with a large selection of good bear, outside space, comfy chairs, bit dingy, bit dirty but, an unmistakable je ne sais quoi! Here you will find most of what Deptford has to offer which mixes the dregs (all the new yuppie, loaded, salt of the earth wannabe's) with the best, long term residents of all classes, the erudite and witty homeless, the slightly loopy to the totally messed up, musically, socially, intellectually, spiritually. Students, old codgers, raucous women, you name it, you're likely to come across it here and unless you're very careful (and unfriendly) likely to end up in conversation. The food is usually fantastic. The staff are exceptional. I think there is still a cheap bnb. Open mic Wednesday, space to dance when the bank is kicking it - a pool table and comfy sofa's if they're not. And the sound man plays spectacular music.
People actually come a long way to come n hang here
Don't forget the big red bus, for pizza and nibbles
Being close to Goldsmiths they're also very trans ideology friendly if the graffiti and posters are anything to go by. But you know every kind of person has been welcomed here forever
Halloween night there was a photo opportunity set up outside with a coffin to eff off in! didn't post a close up - no swearing allowed!
A. D.
Great burger & super staff. Can't wait for lock down to end in order to fully enjoy the Birds Nest.
S. V.
Music excellent. Only 1/4 real ale pumps on & that was the dreaded Doom Bar! No other decent beers even in bottles/cans!
J. J.
Funny little pub full of local characters. Had live music and a generally friendly vibe. If I love around there again I'd definitely be a regular. Feels very London.
R. C.
Really impressive vegan menu here (although some of the items weren't available, hopefully this was just a one-off?) - would definitely come back to try the other options. All the food was very good value too.
i.
There are not so many places of this kind left in London, for people who like people, proper deco ,proper gigs, art gallery, pool table, loads of seating outside,a small but pretty lively stage with all kind of performers and an upper friendly staff...a gem south of the river, please subscribe, support and visit more often!
J. A.
Great bar, excellent prices, music, decor, food and very friendly staff. Could do with having gender neutral toilets considering all the trans rights stickers/posters though!
A. S.
A great friendly pub. A bit tatty but none the worse for it. A good music venue with a very wide range of live music. And free entry.
D. L.
Cool pub, shame that the sassy blonde bartender guy with a bowl cut was the rudest little bastard chewing his jaw off after whatever he snorted behind the bar and offending my friends in a Sunday. He should very much be fired.
I. B.
I never write negetive reviews but this used to be my favourite pub and I'm really dissappionted that they've doubled the price of the burgers and seem to have changed happy hour and when the kitchen is open I really hope they don't sell out.
J. L. C.
Great to find an authentic pub that still exists in Deptford. Was there with a friend for Sunday roast, but the live entertainment drove us out to another bar as it was too loud to hear each other talk.
D. G. M.
Good night out. Great staff.
R. B.
We give this pub 5 stars because its Heritage and the names who have played here are legendary . The last Deptford Heritage Festival it hosted OUR bands and was packed, but sadly the last owner broke their promise
D. R.
It's a pub with character. With history and a friendly and vibrant cilentelle. The music is original and interesting and the food is good too.
A. J. B.
Down to earth pub, that reminds me of my early 90s squatting days. Full of punk's, goths and ner-do-wells. My kind of place, good music playing and some interesting bands.
f.
Brilliant night out - top notch company - accommodating bar staff and crew - sound chap is a diamond geezer xx
S. H.
I've played in a band there twice now and each time there was a great atmosphere and friendly people who will go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
C. B.
Great venue. Great staff. Tiny stage but it's nice to get up close and personal to the bands anyway.
P. B.
First impression is a tiny dirty pub however after spending a little time here you realise its all part of the charm. Friendly staff and great food at very reasonable prices.
X. X.
Great pub. Been going since the eighties. Fantastic food on Sunday. Great bands as well.
F. P.

Very very friendly staff, helped me carry my heavy suitcase to the 2ed floor. The bed is comfortable, But the place is quite dirty and old.the female's room is noisy.BTW They didn't check my ID.😂
J. M.
Lots of live music, good beer selection too. Hard to miss as it's next to the he big red bus, staff and patrons are a friendly bunch
J. B.
Dirty as hell, but great staff and good beer, would deffo go back, proper pub, loved it. Dirty in a fantastic way, just go there

M. J.
Great venue for live music! And music lovers very colourful! Not for the faint hearted!

Legend has it that if you recite all the words to 'we didn't start the fire' to the barman he may give you a free picked egg with your next round!
T. C.
A great local's pub. They often have live music there. There's also a reasonable restaurant and bar next door, Big Red Pizza
E. O.
It's a good place to meet up with friends and meet new ones. They have a good mix of live music and other kinds of entertainment.
O. A.
The go to place for bare essentials . The no frills equivalent of Ryanair or easyJet.
T. W.
The music is loud, the drinks are well priced, and you can get a pretty good pizza from the bus outside.
M.
