Reviews of Diya Royal
D. J.
We've never visited here before, but the food was delicious and the staff were very polite, friendly and nothing was too much🍽️ we both had starters and mains with drinks and it was reasonably priced and what you'd expect to pay. The atmosphere was lovely as was the decor and the music was not too loud. Would definitely recommend here to anyone🍽️

Fantastic restaurant. Food was amazing.
Well cooked and full of flavour a great menu choice, if anything to much choice.
Very friendly staff.
Definitely will be returning.
W. P.
The food was amazing, would highly recommend if you're looking for something a little different to the usual curries you're used to. This is good quality Nepalese food...delicious. Will definitely be back.

I had never dined at Diya Royal before but had always wanted to give it a try after reading alot of positive reviews about the overall dining experience offered. When my friend suggested booking a table I jumped at the chance. Some people think Diya Royal is mainly Indian cuisine, this is not true, Diya Royal is Nepalese cuisine which is influenced by Tibetan, Indian, Chinese and other parts of Asia. We had a table booked for 8.30 and on our arrival we were given a warm and friendly welcome from all the staff and were seated promptly even though we were 10 minutes early. The restaurant was very busy and had a healthy, vibrant atmosphere which is always a good sign. We both ordered a starter, my friend ordered the
Nepalese style sweet and sour chilli chicken with peppers, the balance of chilli, sweet and sour flavours was perfect, which in my opinion was excellent and I highly recommend you try. I ordered the Fish Sunkoshi which was freshly marinated deep-fried crispy tilapia served with green chutney. The fish was cooked perfectly and the dish as a whole was full of flavour and tasted delicious, the green chutney really lifted the dish and gave it a freshness. For our main course we ordered the Nepalese special fried rice between us and the Piro lamb, which was Spicy Nepalese lamb tikka curry with fresh green chili, garlic coriander and mixed peppers. I ordered the Saag Jhinga, which was a freshly prepared tiger prawn curry with fresh baby spinach leaves – Gurkha style. This was accompanied with Paratha's, which I can only describe as a cross between puff pasty and a flatbread. I would have been happy just to have three or four Paratha's just to dunk into my curry sauce!!!! An amazing culinary experience with a great variety of Nepalese cuisine to choose from at a reasonable price. I will definitely be back for seconds.....and you should be too!!!!!

First time here as I'm not from around these parts.
Was recommended.
Makes such a difference to try something different.
Absolutely loved it, hence my score.
Very clean, service was attentive, and the food was fab...don't snack before you go as portion size was unreal.
We had to take a doggy bag home, to good to leave.
Would recommend this restaurant. They also have a pub attached so you can have a pre drink or night cap

Second time we’ve eaten here. In 41 years of trying in Bedford we’ve never found a ‘excellent’ Indian restaurant, found good but not excellent. The service is second to none, presentation great, and food was absolutely amazing. Full of taste, different to what usual restaurants serve due to being Nepalese, not dry, but cannot explain how nice it is. Definitely try this restaurant you won’t be disappointed. I was dubious as it’s inside a pub that used to be ‘rough’ but was very taken aback to the experience and how enjoyable it was.

Best restaurant in Bedford area me thinks. So many different indian dishes, and lovely staff. Excellent dining environment. Got a sense everyone from kitchen to front of house actually cares about the customer experience. Def be back

This is my go to Indian - the food is fantastic, the staff are incredibly friendly and the restaurant is incredibly clean. The portions are generous too!
I’ve been here a number of times and can’t fault it
A. D.
Absolutely amazing the best food I've tasted in ages. Staff so great a little bit of heaven. Superb!

We had a most wonderful meal last night at Diya Royal, still Kempston's one and only Nepalese restaurant. The service was quick, efficient and friendly, and the atmosphere in the restaurant is buzzing, complete with colorful and detailed decorations and Gurkha-themed memorabilia. As it is joined to The Griffin pub, the bar is stocked with all the beers, ciders, wines and spirits anyone could ever need - which also includes Cobra beer ON TAP. We decided on the Peregrino merlot from Chile, a full bodied red wine with plenty of dark fruit accents.
For starters, we had poppadoms (made fresh on site, of course), and I asked for the breaded salt and pepper king prawns, which came with seasoned diced vegetables, burnt garlic and garden-fresh green chillies. It was TO DIE FOR. The accompanying chutney dips for the poppadoms (mango, mint and onion) were also made and prepared on site.
For my main, I went for one of their house specials, the Gurkhali Khasi - a slow hundy cooked Nepalese lamb curry with frsh coriander and spring onions. The lamb was so tender it practically melted in the mouth. My accompanying mushroom rice (shock horror, wouldn't have seen that coming!) was also splendid, and not dripping with ghee as is sometimes the case. They aren't slouches when it comes to Indian food either, as my partner decided to play it slightly safe and went with the chicken tikka masala, which was smooth yet bursting with flavour. I'm advised that she'll be more adventurous next time though!
The prices are highly competitive, especially considering the portion sizes. The chocolates that came with the bill were milk chocolate mints, rather than dark chocolate mints. We were delighted with that, too!
You can bet that we'll be back again soon enough. There's a lot more to sample from that menu, it's practically a given that a second and third visit is required.

I love eating here. Food is delicious and the service is brilliant l
D. B.
Amazing!!! Not sure what else I can say.. the food was divine and the staff and service were second to none!! Such friendly people and the knowledge was awesome. The fish chilli starter was probably one of the best starters I've ever had!!!! I cant say thank u enough
L. D.
Absolutely beautiful meal tonight. Here’s a little photo of the veggie mixed starter. Big portions, reasonable prices, super friendly and attentive staff and a really great selection across the menu too.

The best lamb curry I've ever had. Great service. Won't be having curry anywhere else in Bedfordshire.
S. W.
The service was exceptional even with a large disorganised party and if you likenthis cuisine the food cannot be faulted.
S. S.
Well cooked, tasty food. Friendly, attentive staff, who did well on New year's Eve a busy night. Owners very polite, friendly & welcoming. Pleasant ambiance. A variety of dishes. Enjoyed sweet/sour chicken. Thoroughly enjoyable evening.

A little expensive, but worth giving it a try. Service was excellent.
I. L.
We have just had our first takeaway from Diya Royal. It was truly exceptional and the best takeaway meal we've ever eaten from any of the restaurants locally used in the past. Five stars well deserved!
N. A.
Fantastic food and brilliant friendly service

Really tasty food and great service. Friendly helpful staff. Would definitely go again.

We now don't go anywhere else! We order the vegetarian / vegan dishes and can honestly say it is the best take-out we have had. We have ordered several times and will continue to do so. Looking forward to when we actually eat in the restaurant
M. W.
After the first visit we've decided to give it another go. The 2nd time the food was even better. I highly recommend this one.

Wow! As a vegetarian there was plenty of choice. The staff were fast , friendly and helpful. The food itself did not disappoint. Great portion size. The vegetable biryani was excellent! Really good value too and we took some leftovers home. We will certainly be back.
The place was lovely and clean , ample car parking and a 5 hygiene rating.

K. W.
Again we were not disappointed with the food and service. Obvious care had also been taken with the decor as the main room is well furnished and adds to the whole enjoyable experience.
d. d.
The great reviews for this restaurant are all spot on.. Had a fantastic meal here last night! The Diya really is a hidden gem of a place.. Portion sizes are fab, service is brilliant and the food is out of this world.. Highly recommend that you give this place a go! Will definitely be going back again and again now that we've found it!
R. M.
Lovely Gurkha curry house, really friendly and attentive staff. The food is by far the tastiest I've ever experienced, really lovely and service with a smile. Please do what you can to support this place.
D. F.
The Diya Royal Indian Restaurant setting is one of best and most comfortable places to eat I have been for a while, we arrived quite late after returning from a night out in Milton Keynes so we were not expecting to be seated as we arrived well after 10pm, luckily for us the staff seated us and serviced us without any issues and we had the pick of clean tables to choose from, slap bang in the middle.
We had great service from the members of staff, very friendly and polite, nothing was a problem. We had a really good meal within a nice relaxing atmosphere, 4 poppadoms 2 mains 2 sides and 4 drinks £40 well worth a try either eating in or takeaway with a 10% discount on collections, they are starting a local delivery service soon, well worth the money. Many thanks to all the staff.
M. S.
Ordered takeaway and was not disappointed! Food was delivered still hot and nothing was missing. I recommend ordering the Momo steamed or crab cakes for an appetizer. The Tenzilo chicken was delicious and all the sauces the food came with or in, were delicious and tasted as if they were really homemade. It was very interesting to try a couple new dishes which other places in Bedford do not offer. 10/10 experience!
B.
The meal was reasonable not very flavoured at all. The mains tasted as though the flavours were the same paste throughout the other dishes.... The difference between a good restaurant and a very good restaurant would be them telling you whether you need rice or naan with your mains, this is other main reason they only got 3 stars today.
K. S.
Excellent service. Highly recommend tasty food
A. A.
Our third time. Usual friendly atmosphere and service. However the chef was a bit spice happy that night . We all ordered mild dishes but they were a bit lively! This was a one off though. Still to be recommended.
T. R.
Very friendly staff lovley food
A. G.
Unique experience of original tastes and magic atmosphere takes you through the journey to Nepal.
K. M.
Well presented (the starters bit too saucy did leave my fingers orange for the day)
Would recommend, ++++
P. G. [.
Nice food and good service. Friendly atmosphere
E. B.
Always a pleasure, the staff are welcoming and friendly. The food is amazing and I would highly recommend it.
E. C.
Great place to have a dinner. Have walked past it for many times but never thought that this place would be so good. Do not hesitate and try it out for yourself. It's very good Indian restaurant in your local area. They serve many dishes and you will for sure find your favourite Indian dish. Take out your partner, family or friend and have a good time at this Indian restaurant, it's located right on the main street so it's easy to locate it.
N. E.
Wonderful family run business!! My husband and I went to Nepal several years ago. The food is exactly the same!! It has Nepalese chef, staff and owner. They make you very welcome and the remember who we are each time we go. We absolutely love the MOMO and highly recommend them.
P. R.
Been here several times and enjoy the quiet uncrowded atmosphere
Service is always excellent. This time, I felt the food was not quite up to previous standards. Lamb chops a little tough and vegetables a little too ' el dente'. The Indian style cauliflower was a little over salted. Overall, still good value and a pleasant experience.
I. M.
Nice friendly staff, great food at a good price. Is a great local restaurant and will be going back soon. Nice atmosphere too.
I. A.
After reading good reviews about this restaurant my friends and I thought we would give it a try. Can't really fault the food served it tasted lovely but the menu didn't really describe the dishes very well at all which made it hard to select a dish to try and we ended up going for safe options. Was disappointing to see some dishes missing from the menu, for example: saag aloo. Also some dishes came with only one meat option where it would have been nice to have had an option for other meats like you would in many other Indian cuisine restaurants. Aside from the menu the staff were lovely, very attentive and didn't seem at all put out when we order alterations to our meals.
R. B.
I don't think it is an understatement to say that diya is one of the best curries I have ever had. Quality meat, wonderfully balanced sauces and a daal to die for. Not only that, but the service is top notch as well. They went above and beyond to look after me. Honestly outstanding.
S. B.
We’d heard good things about this restaurant so gave it a go for a special family occasion, but unfortunately were left disappointed against expectations. The restaurant shares the building with the small pub next door, and it’s through this pub that we had to enter on the evening. That wouldn’t normally be a problem but on a Friday night it was busy with ‘party goers’ and despite having a reservation we had to order a drink while waiting. It is a bit of a ‘locals’ pub but fortunately there was a table free towards the rear so we were able to keep ourselves to ourselves for twenty minutes.
Eventually we were welcomed through to the restaurant. It’s a lot larger than it looks outside and the main area has been decorated nicely however the toilets could do with some similar attention. We had a table for six in a small extension to the side. The table was spacious and the room was clean enough, although it seemed to lack a little of the atmosphere in the main area. Nice popadoms were brought as we looked through the menu but there was no spicy dip.
There’s a good variety of drinks both by the bottle and on draught, plus the prices were all reasonable. The food menu is really extensive, offering Indian classics as well as Gurkha and house specialities. This was nice and made it a little more special than your normal curry. Starters were served in good time and were all decent sized portions.
The main dishes were a little more underwhelming. Despite requesting for additional spice on some dishes they remained mild, however the mild dishes were actually served rather hot. For non-spice lovers this resulted in a difficult meal to stomach! The special Nepalese rice was really good and there’s a comprehensive range of breads offered too.
It may be because the restaurant was busy that evening but the staff came across rather blunt throughout our stay, to the point of making us feel a little unwelcome. We had to chase in order to get our initial order taken and it was very slow for plates to be removed after the meal, but there were no pleasantries exchanged while we were being served.
At the end of the meal it took an age to obtain the bill and it ended up being completely wrong as a number of tables had been mixed up. This did eventually get sorted out but it was a long winded process. I’m hoping we just got unlucky with the whole experience on what was a busy evening, so I’ll give it another go at some point, but otherwise I’d avoid popular times.
m. O.
Beautiful food .. meat ball starter is fantastic like wize is the chilli chicken super friendly staff will definitely go again 15 off us everyone was happy .. think that says it all ...
S. H.
Just had an amazing takeaway from diya. This was our first time ordering from here and it was amazing we will have to go and have a sit down meal. The paneer starter took us back to a restaurant we use to go to in edgware and that was the only place we could get it but to now find a place so close is great. I've never found mogos anywhere else either and the masala mogos are amazing. 2 very happy customers
M. S.
Curry was extremely salty! Have eaten at this restaurant two times, service was good, but both times my curry was extremely salty. Unlikely to dine there again due to the over seasoned food.

Great food and excellent service
M. M.
It was a busy Saturday evening and there wasn't enough staff. After sitting for half an hour with the poppadoms we had to ask the staff if we could place an order, another 40 minutes past and the starters arrived but at this point we asked if all the food could just be brought as soon as it was ready because we had waited so long. Nearly an hour and a half with five poppadoms and two now very tired and tetchy kids isn't good enough. The food was fresh and tasty but a lot hotter than the 'chilly' ratings in the menu would suggest, too hot for the kids who ate only rice and yoghurt really. Prices are quite steep considering it's not much better quality than takeaway food on a plate in a part converted pub on a high street.
Z. A.
Excellent food every time 🤩
