Reviews of Ebi Sushi

Very convenient location, kind staff and talented chief behind counter. Freshly sliced sashimi, experienced salt grilled dishes. Fabulous dinning sense top of past two years. Recommended!

Incredible sushi! Every single mouthful was delightful. I especially enjoyed the tuna belly which was worth every penny. It is slightly on the higher end of prices for Derby, but if you can treat yourself, I highly recommend it. I know that this kind of meal in London would have costs three times as much for the exact same dishes. I also love the authentic Japanese feel that you get from the restaurant. I believe that the term for a sushi master is ‘Itamae’ and this is definitely what the gentleman in Ebi Sushi is. Finally, the service is excellent due to the size of the restaurant, extremely attentive and received all our drinks and meals in good timing.

Authentic Japanese cuisine made by Japanese chef. The food is very fresh and delicious, and the environment is very cosy and friendly.
The price is really reasonable with the quality that they service. Make sure to call and book before turning up! They do have pick up service too!
A. L.
Very delicious Japanese sushi, sashimi and hot dishes. Good quality with reasonable price. Friendly staff.
Will visit again very soon.

The food is so delicious! Authentic Japanese food, fresh and tasty! Highly recommend this place. We traveled 1h to get there but it was so worthy, will definitely be back.

The food in this restaurant is absolutely fantastic I would definitely recommend the beef teriyaki and the cheese cake they’re so flavourful!!! 5/5 definitely coming back again

The best sushi I've had in the UK. A small authentic Japanese sushi restaurant that caters to the many Toyota employees that want a taste of home. Get it whilst you can!
Tip: fish day is Tuesday so to get the freshest sushi go early in the week!
They don't normally do takeaway, it's normally a sit down restaurant, so if they're busy they might just refuse your takeaway order. Or just try again later in the evening.
Typically you will need to book for Friday and Saturday night since it's small, but just in case, I would advise you book on any night you decide to go.
They also have a specials menu - have to ask since it depends on whatever the chef decided to prepare or buy and it's written up on the board on the wall but written in Japanese.
Lastly if you're going to be ordering a decent amount such as £200-400+ for your party maybe try to get there earlier before other people do… it's only a few restaurant so whenever you go and do that, other guests come in but wait extra long because they are still trying to clear that order so everyone else gets pushed back. (Sorry!…)
Friendly staff and chef. You can see the sushi getting prepared. Worth every penny.

Decent sushi for Derby but wouldn't stand out anywhere else. Staff were lovely and helped picked recommendations. Atmosphere was quiet and soft lighting.
We had edamame (10/10, can't go wrong with edamame beans. Warm and salted well), two specials which were fried fish and octopus in teriyaki sauce. Fish was a bit underwhelming in taste but the quality of the meat was good. First time having octopus, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Quite chewy but combined with the teriyaki sauce, was good. (5/10). The platter of sushi and nigiri were great. The fish melted in your mouth and the rolls had a good kick to it with the wasabi being rolled into the sushi. Only one piece was a bit funky in texture and taste, as it still had it the skin on. Not a fan of that.
Total bill came up to £74 for two people which includes two large bottles of beer, which isn't crazy for good sushi. Overall, 3/5.

Highly recommended! They do authentic Japanese dishes, a bit pricey but worth every penny, especially recommend the scallop nigiri which is really sweet and thick, also the braised pork belly and black cod. The cheesecake was just alright tho.

My all time favorite Japanese restaurant <3 tuna belly is a must have if you like sashimi super fresh and it melts in your mouth. Egg sushi is lovely too deluxe sushi plate is a good option if you don't know what to choose from. you will get a selection of raw fish sushi. Daily specials available. Japanese cheesecake was great.

Amazing experience! This was by far the best japanese cuisine I've ever tasted. The grilled eel was incredible, never had anything like it. The whole restaurant had a positive vibe going on. The interior felt cosy, service was really kind and fast and being able to watch the chef prepare the sushi made it feel really authentic. Definitely give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.

BEST SUSHI IN UK! This was my birthday dinner so we ate so many food and sushi here. We tried the sushi and the eel rice and both were so delicious and mouthwatering! I would definitely come here again and also recommend you to come to this restaurant. The sushi was made by a Japanese chef.

Wow. I’d highly suggest this restaurant to everyone! The fish is extremely fresh at Ebi Sushi! The service is absolutely amazing.
I’ve had sushi in London, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Barcelona, so I think I’m more than qualified to give them a five star rating. I’d suggest ordering the salmon and tuna nigiri. Also, the hand rolls were lovely.
L. P.
Decent Japanese food for this part of the world. If you're looking for sushi in derby, this is your place.
Would I go again? I go every time I'm in the area.
Service is friendly.
Prices are in line with the quality of the food.

Very good restaurant. Amazing sashimi. A bit of the pricer end. We needed to have more food at a different place after having dinner here.

Since going to Japan, I have never ordered sushi back in England because why would I want to pay for mediocre quality that will never match Japan? However I learned of Ebi Sushi being one of the best sushi restaurants in the UK and decided it was long past due that I have some proper, high quality sushi. I went for a meal tonight and had a lovely time. The chef prepares each item freshly with love and expertise. The fish is very high quality, amount of wasabi in each item is perfect and the rice is perfectly formed, not too tightly packed or lacking moisture. People say it is expensive; it is a little bit but again, why pay for mediocre sushi with inferior ingredients? For the price you’re paying, you aren’t getting skimpy, Tesco meal deal sized rolls and nigiri, it’s generous slices of high quality fish spilling over the rice, and the tamago (egg) sushi uses omelette the length of my hand, easily twice the size of the rice and delicious! I ordered the deluxe sushi platter which I think is pretty decent value, soft shell crab roll (which was incredible) and tamago nigiri and left very full. I could’ve probably done without the crab or tamago sushi and still been satisfied. Every other person in the restaurant was Japanese, mostly from the nearby Toyota factory which to me, is a great sign of quality. It’s a lovely meal at mid-range prices, you’re not gonna eat there every night but I would happily dine there again periodically as it is right on my doorstep and I’m so grateful to have such a high quality sushi restaurant in central England. Anyone saying the decor is outdated has clearly never been to Japan or a real sushi restaurant, the restaurant looks like it has been taken right out of a little alley in Asakusa (Tokyo) and in perfect keeping with traditional sushi restaurant decor, both inside and out.

Not much food are available on the menu comparing to other people that have token picture in Google map review, I was thinking of getting ramen but there were no ramen in the restaurant but that is fine, the quality of food is ok, I had a tempura soba that was alright but the most important thing is staff was very kind and helpful.
D.
This is an authentic Sushi restaurant in the middle of Derby. Rarely I tried so tasty sushi and sashimi. Would even be worth a trip to try.
G. Z.
Best sushi in town, definitely worth the price! Japanese chef making the sushi fresh and authentic
V. A.
Absolutely stunning food! I'm a really fussy foodie and this was fantastic! Bravo!
K. W.
Superb sashimi. There are not many restaurants outside Japan that serve sashimi this well and this fresh. If I could give 6 stars, I would.
I had the sashimi platter; Scallop, sea bream, salmon belly, flounder, tuna belly and simple tuna loin, and yellowtail. Everything was just as you would have found it served in a high quality restaurant in Tokyo. Absolutely superb food preparation and serving. Arigato Gozaimasu. Oishikata desu.
W. D.
Excellent food, top quality for the price would definitely recommend.
N. O.
Really great food, lovely small place with some paintings that were available to be bought. The sushi was delicious and the pork was very filling ♡ menu was varied but not too much to handle when it comes to picking what you want.
K. M.
Outstanding, pure enjoyment. Quite easily the best sashimi I have ever had.
J. T.
Amazing experience. The fish quality was fantastic, and so was everything else on the menu. Any fan of sushi needs to try this place. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Our waitress took the time to explain each dish to ensure that we enjoyed our meal. I will be sure to come back again.
S. C.
Oh Ebi Sushi! How i miss thee. Super authentic Japanese food with fresh sushi rolls and top quality fish. I dare to say this is one of the best restaurants in all of Derby. Also do try their matcha icecream if you get the chance. Excellent.
J. C.
Incredible sushi, best I have had in a very long time.
E. M.
Unassuming from the outside but once inside the food and service is outstanding. The freshest most beautiful looking portions of fish skillfully prepared to order right infront of you by chefs who have so much experience they make it look effortless. Everything we had, and we sampled alot of dishes across the various menu categories, was delicious. The waiting staff were attentive and knowledgeable without being pushy and everything was served with courtesy and care. Booking definitely recommended as even at 6pm when it opened all but one table was reserved.

Best and most authentic sushi I've had in the U.K. by a long mile, even after having lived in many parts of Asia and also California (surprisingly good sushi on the West Coast of the U.S. you'd be amazed to know!). When in Hong Kong, my best friend at the time being Japanese and his mum working at the most exclusive Japanese penthouse restaurant in Hong Kong, expectations were high. I've tried it in almost all cities here after being so disappointed almost everywhere else, this is the place to go. Pricey, but worth it. Orgasam in the mouth.
Lovely staff, beautiful food. Thank you Ebi, Itamai-san. My only disappointment is that I wish I could come more often!
R.
I was cynical at first, decent sushi in Derby? Must be having a laugh... But the establishment is very nice, clean, and the staff are super friendly. Authentic Japanese cuisine, and the food tastes amazing. The price point is reasonable in my opinion.
C. J.
Great restaurant. Great service. There is a car park opposite, which is free in the evenings. I can't comment on the food though, even though I've eaten mainstream sushi from itsu/wasabi, I couldn't stomach real Japanese sushi. This feels like the real deal and that unfortunately is not for me. Would recommend if you enjoy Japanese food.
R. B. (.
The best sushi I have had in the UK! Well worth the trip and money!
S. K.
A traditional Japanese sushi place with cozy seating and exceptional sushi with higher end pricing.
Ebi sushi is a relatively minimally decorated sushi restaurant with no conveyor but just well prepared sushi and traditional Japanese fair. It is small usually busy and the food is great (assuming you like sushi or Japanese food). There is a selection of beers and drinks to compliment the food.
All in all its a great place to go but don't expect to return with some change.
A. Y.
Fabulous meal for my birthday. Masterful food and the first time I've ever enjoyed sushi. It's in another league! Well done to all the staff for creating such a gem of a place
L. L.
Best sashimi i had in England. Authentic Japanese food.
Highly recommended on all Tuna related sashimi dishes and the 'don's. especially the toro which is fresh and full of flavors.
Apparently the fish is freshly delivered from London everyday.
Frequent by local Japanese.
Dinner reservation is highly recommended. As the restaurant only has a handful of tables.
A. S.
Really clean modern place with helpful friendly staff and wonderful food that you could see being prepared by the chef. Busy with lots of reservations even on a Tuesday. I would certainly go again but I would book as I think we were lucky to get a table and only did so because we went quite early.- at about 6.30pm. Go to this place.
C. W.
Great place for sushi and various other Japanese dishes. I recommend the karaage (fried chicken) and zosui (rice soup) for those with an aversion to sushi and sashimi. Alternatively there are specials on the boards which are always worth asking about.
J. B.
The food was amazing as was the service. The quality of fish is unbelievable it melts in your mouth, best tuna I've ever eaten.
l. g.
Wasabi ice-cream, green tea ice-cream and sesame ice-cream are all well worth trying. Ebi is a great host and cook! Amazing food and service, can't complain.. not cheap place to eat, but worth it!
D. S.
Beautifully hand-prepared, made-to-order sushi & sashimi. Delicious! Tempura and soba also great.
Quite expensive, as one would expect for this kind of thing.
Good service.
S. P.
It's interesting how opinions can differ. Even though it has an overall mark of 4.7, I would give it around 3.5 stars. I had better sushi in many other places.

Truly a diamond in the rough. I've sampled sushi at great places all over the uk (london, bristol, oxford, cambridge, manchester, birmingham, cornwall) and honestly, i have never found better sushi than here. It is a truly really excellent restaurant.

Best place for eating sushi in Derby and probably in all the Midlands. It's a bit expensive but is worth because all the food is oishikatta!!
