Reviews of Amber Restaurant
D. N.
We had a three course meal here with whisky pairing at each course. The food was stunning and raised to a different level with the paired whisky. My partner said the venison was one of the best things she had ever eaten. The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely come back next time we are in Edinburgh
D. T.
Went for the Burns night Mary kings close then meal. Food was great except the turnip/swede fondant was pretty raw and the whiskey sauce and dessert could do with a touch more whiskey so there's a taste of it but other than that food good. Service started fantastic however the busier it got the slower drinks service and clearing tables became. However yes we would go again it was great value and the drinks prices I though we're good value
B. S.
Our group had a wonderful tasting menu here. Great location near the castle. They gave a presentation on a few whiskeys. Really well done. The food was amazing. Everything was delicious. Just a great opening evening in Edinburgh. Great staff and service.
A. N.
Really good Scottish restaurant! Went for dinner and didn’t think much of it, but ended up having a full 3-course meal with a drink. Absolutely amazing food, very friendly staff and very nice atmosphere. If you’re a whiskey-lover, that’s the place for you. Would certainly recommend and come back again when in Edinburgh.

I went here twice. First for a hot toddy which was nice. Then for dinner where I decided to have 3 side pots (Cullen skink, stovies, haggis neeps tatties) then I tried a smoked whisky hot chocolate...which was surprisingly nice. Most of the staff here are very nice (particularly Oliver and the Irish lady🙂)

My boyfriend was not very happy with his food, but me and my sister did choose trafitional scotish one and it was fantastic. Nice soup of the day served with fresh bakery. I can highly recommend it by myself. Got low by one star only because of my boyfriend food. Stuff very nice, place nice for eating.
D. H.
Had a great meal here for our 1 year anniversary. The menu was great, drinks selection also great (especially if you like whisky!) we will definitely be back. Staff were great and the prices reasonable for Edinburgh. Will be back and would highly recommend.
R. B.
Delectable experience with the Scottish tasting menu, which worked perfectly. Coastal malt Glenglassaugh with the starters, robust Highland sherry cask matured Glendronach with the mains and the rich delicacy of Benriach with dessert. Simply delicious, from the mountains to the valleys to the sea.
K. D.
Food was by far the best I had on a week long stay in the UK. Try the Cullen skink (especially if you’re vegetarian, the smokiness of the fish tastes like bacon)! We also did a whisky tasting and our servers were very enthusiastic. Sticky toffy pudding was also perfect! Pictures is the salmon and potato dumplings. 10/10!
W.
I had the haggis pot for starter which was amazing, my girlfriend had the Brie parcel and the Brie was oozing out it was absolutely amazing and the sweet crunchy nuts on top accomplished it really well. We both had the venison for main which was absolutely incredible. The staff were lovely and friendly, we could not fault this place. 10/10.
A. P.
Absolutely loved it! The food was really good quality, the staff was kind and helpful and it was not overpriced at all. 😋🧡👏🏻 Definitely recommend it, it really complete the whisky experience! 😉
S. G.
The restaurant is located almost on the doorsteps of Edinburgh Castle, in the basement of the Scottish Whiskey Experience. I dropped in for a late lunch. Started with the Cullen Skink, which was rather watery & thin. I have had better Cullen Skink in the Highlands. For the mains I ordered the Stovies, which was much better. Very meaty & hearty. They also have a great collection of whiskeys from all over Scotland, and are quite good at helping people choose something that goes well with their food.
G. C.
A wonderful place for whiskey drinkers (and starters). They have a wall of whiskey bottles behind the bar and the staff (Rachel) were happy to make recommendations, give more information about each drink and just chat about whiskey. The prices were perfectly reasonable too. Highly recommended a visit - we went back twice!
A. R.
Our group had a wonderful tasting menu here. Great location near the castle. The food was amazing!!
G. K.
Full of flavour and fantastic wait staff. My wife and I dined here as our first culinary experience in Scotland. We ordered beetroot cured salmon for entrée and pots of haggis, lamb stovies, cullen skink, fish chowder, roast potatoes for mains to share. The wait staff were the most well-mannered, helpful and attentive I have experienced in a long time. The food was packed full of flavour. The neeps and tatties had a well-balanced creamy flavour that complimented the haggis exquisitely. The salmon and cullen skink had smokey notes and it was all very well seasoned. I would say that our order was very hearty and comforting. If you're looking for something more delicate perhaps, order a main dish instead of pots. Prices were great. Our food came to a total of £30. All-in-all we're very happy with our introduction to Scottish cuisine.
G. G.
Food was Fantastic. The roasted salmon and potato dumplings is a must.✅✅✅
S. M.
Well the food was good and we had a flight of whiskey each, they didn't have the dessert we both wanted so the manager said we could have the cheese board on the house, we ordered coffee and asked for the bill. Charged for the cheese board and the 2 desserts we didn't get. So please check your bill before paying as we did and saved £25
D. D.
Fantastic meal to round off the whisky tour...but would definitely recommend this restaurant and bar without the tour.
T. R.
First whiskey tasting experience and can’t say enough how amazing it was! Highly recommend and cheers to Billy for his excellent suggestions and knowledge to make the experience a 10/10. Will definitely be coming back.
S. A.
We had a fantastic whiskey tasting experience, never treated as individuals who knew nothing about whiskey (which we don't!), this was secondary to the fabulous meals. We had the rib-eye and venison, the venison being the vest we'd ever tasted! A must visit if you're new to the whiskey scene or accustomed. Lovely food, lovely service.
A. S.
Went to the Amber restaurant for my birthday, the service was excellent with very attentive and knowledgeable staff. The food was great I had haggis neeps and tatties with whisky sauce which was delicious, they even threw in a free whisky for my birthday. It was so good I returned every day for th rest of the week for hot chocolate and cake. I will definitely be going back when I visit Edinburgh next.
S. P. T.
Wonderful restaurant. Delicious food and gracious service. Extremely good value. The waiters were also very kind. Have the whiskey flight!
A. M.
Absolutely wonderful food. Nice relaxed atmosphere.
A must for whiskey lovers, a fantastic selection
D. M. C.
Excellent place to eat. We have been there a few times now while on our short breaks in Edinburgh, the food is always excellent quality and having a dram of whisky come with some of the meals is another bonus. The staff are helpful and polite as well as knowledgeable when it comes to the foods origins and the whisky you might want to try. Go there you won't regret it.
A. T.
We got the Scottish platter, and it was a great choice! Really good stuff. Staff was super helpful and lovely.
S. W.
Food is delicious, staff are lovely. Prices are very reasonable especially for Edinburgh. Astounding amount of whisky
s. r.
Excellent food, very good friendly service without being intrusive and good atmosphere. Being a whisky bar staff had very good knowledge and advice of the whiskies. Very good value for money. A very enjoyable evening all round.
J. P.
You’ll struggle to find a better venison in all of Edinburgh 🦌 gorgeous cut of meat and complimented with a lovely dram of Bowmore whisky 🥃 attentive staff, very good service and just what we needed after the tour. Also recommend the salmon to start 🎣 lovely restaurant with chilled vibes
D. K.
The fish was amazing 🤤💜 If you love wisky you must go there. 😉
G. F.
Really great experience.
The whisky tasting was a fantastic way to try some pretty expensive whisky without having to drop 180 on a bottle! Staff also know their stuff so really adds to the experience.
A. D.
The amber restaurant which take place under the whiskey museum is a lovely place. The food is really tasty and you could find good Scottish specialties. The waitress was really nice and gave me some tips about the city. Everything was perfect ! I recommend this place (As well as the whiskey museum tour).
D. T.
Great restaurant! Food is excellent and the selection of whisky is superb. Servers are very knowledgeable about whisky as well.
D. P.
A nice surprise. Wandered in and weren’t that hungry so chose smaller plates. I ordered a selection of the small pots and each was really tasty. Cullen skink, haggis and beef casserole all recommended. My wife had the Scottish tapas. All great. Nice surroundings too
C. L.
Really outstanding food at an amazing price, considering the time and care that clearly goes into preparation. A massive selection of Scotch from around the region. We had the Chef's selection of 5 Scottish Tapas as well as the roast Lamb with a Mustard and Rosemary Sauce. I highly recommend it and will recommend it to anyone I know visiting the city.
N. S.
Best restaurant I've been to in years. The food was magnificent! I had to give my compliments to the chef. Service was great also. Toilets were totally clean also. Overall a perfect experience. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant if you're in Edinburgh.
A. N.
Such a wonderful experience here celebrating my partner's 30th birthday. The second we walked in the manager was welcoming and attentive. Service was great and we enjoyed someone talking us through the different whiskys as we were newbies! Ordered a flight of whisky which was fantastic value and the food was delicious! Had two mains , desserts and my partner was kindly given an extra birthday tipple to finish our meal. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Manager and wait staff made it a night to remember. Must visit if you are in Edinburgh!
B. K.
Excellent in every way. We ordered the Vegetarian Haggis and the Scottish tapas paired with delicious scotch.
The service was lovely and knowledgeable and the management was friendly.
The restaurant is part of the Whisky Experience and the the Whisky Store upstairs.
I would definitely come back again.
A. k.
Loooove the food, enjoyed from main, starters, tapas to dessert. All though the service was busy, I couldn’t blame them based on the quality of the food and atmosphere inside and location
B. M.
Food was delicious, service was great. No issues with any of the orders. Food arrived in record time.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Recommend for any whisky drinkers. (Over 440 whisky's) you will find the perfect whiskey.
R. W.
Lovely restaurant downstairs from the whiskey experience. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. Great food and drinks. Loads of options on the menu.
I. G.
Given how close to the castle this is you might expect it to be rather touristy and overpriced. However, that's not the case at. A few simple, quality ingredients cooked really well made for a great meal. Then there just happens to be a superbly stacked whisky bar at the other end of the restaurant!
A. M.
Never been to the restaurant before, usually just the bar but it was amazing. Grabbed a got chocolate thing with infused smoked whiskey and was honestly surprised how nice it tasted.
Service was good and I love what they did with the place, reccomend anyone who wants to visit to book before going. Just as a guarantee. Well worth it!
M. T.
Had an excellent lunch and tasted an even more excellent Caribbean Scotch. Our third visit and we will be making reservation again this summer when we return to Edinburgh.
J. P.
Great Scotch, great food, great staff and did I mention great Scotch. Started with a really nice Scotch, the staff was very helpful and prepared my without salt for me. I had the sirloin and it was great. My wife had a vegetable risotto that was excellent and some bread that was to die for. Overall a great experience and I highly recommend it.
N. M.
After visiting the Edinburgh castle my friends and I went for a spot of lunch here.
Great food and service.
We tried the lamb stew (I think that’s what it was called) veggie haggis and haggis which were all so flavoursome and really filling.
A real authentic Scottish lunch and I even tried some whiskey which was recommended by a waitress.
This is also where the Scottish whiskey experience is, so if like us you weren’t able to book the tour, I’d definitely recommend to go here for lunch/dinner as they have a whiskey bar downstairs which hundreds of different bottles.
R. S.
I came here for lunch before visiting the castle. The 2 course special was very good value. The food was excellent and we'll presented. Friendly and professional staff. There is also a whisky bar on site and there are a vast selection of whiskies to choose from, over 400! I was by myself, but there were a variety of tasting options of 4 whiskies, which would be good for sharing.
V. Y.
Good value for the money, the food is way better than we found in London, every dish is a satisfaction! The staff are also very kind and gentle. They deserve more attention.
J. K. B.
The restaurant that specializes in serving different kinds of gin and whiskey in different places of Scotland. They have a menu for whiskey alone and they segregate each bottle of whiskey according to their place. They serve food as well. The staff are very friendly and acccomodating. The follows the health guidelines to protect the customers and establishment.
B.
Great food with excellent service, and a lot of whisky to choose from if you're into that.
L. E.
A wonderful restaurant with superb food and great staff. They are professional and informative, nothing is too much trouble. A fantastic Whiskey tasting experience which we all enjoyed very much.
A. W. (.
Came in for dinner after a long day of exploring around Edinburgh. Was having a tough time on which scotch to try and so they asked a couple of questions to help narrow it down. Told them what I usually like to drink and they recommended the Isle of Jura 21 year which was very good.
My meal was really good as well. I ended up trying haggis for the first time and found it really good. Overall I had a great time here.
S. T.
Delicious elegant Scottish cuisine for a very good price. We got two meals a drink and a starter, everything was delicious and it was significantly less then we usually spend in Edinburgh for less food!
S. M.
It was amazing, if you go here you definitely have to do the whisky experience! Our guide was Huge, who was brilliant, fun yet informative. A lot to learn while drinking whisky!
C. C.
From my point, Amber is a food paradise- the best restaurant in the Edinburgh. Of course, the price is fairly reasonable! It is worth to have a try and then I am pretty sure you will be amazed by everything In here.
s. a.
This place is just a few meters away from the Edinburgh Castle. Food is outstanding and they are known for varities of whiskey they have on offer. Their hot whiskey toddy is a must try.
M. E.
We had the Taste of Scotland tour and the tasting menu here. Really great food and attentive service. Fantastic wine list given it’s a whiskey bar!!
C. B.
I went with my girlfriend a couple of years ago. We went after the whisky tasting and the restaurant finished off the day perfectly. Amazing food and service was amazing. Would love to go back one day when back in Edinburgh.
Y. S.
Lovely restaurant with friendly & helpful staff. Great Scottish fayre to enjoy & an extensive range of whiskies at very reasonable prices & also do whisky flights. Great place to just pop in for coffee & cake as well as lunch & dinner. One of my new favourite places to go in Edinburgh now.
B. C.
Had a great time at the Whisky experience, a nice flight of spay sides, and one of the best meals I have had in a while - "the taste of Scotland". Friendly, engaging and respectful staff. Great place, worth a visit.
C. C.
Would actually give 4.5 stars. Had the beef casserole which was pretty good but a tad salty so 0.5 star down on that. Otherwise all was great. Food is prompt, service is friendly and ambiance is pleasant. Wanted to order the white choco cheesecake too but was too full. There’s extensive whiskey selection. Would recommend!
M. m.
Excellent restaurant with reasonable price
M. B.
Lovely cuisine. 5* presentation. Fabulous selection of whisky's. Only minus is they close at 9:30 which is perhaps a little early for an evening dining experience.
A. T. M.
Only went in to have a few drams; didn't get a chance to sample to food. But the service was excellent and the whiskey was varied and surprisingly affordable. My perception has always been that Amber was very, very expensive and maybe a bit unapproachable because it looks so fancy. But I was made to feel very comfortable by the staff and had a great time! Will be coming back for sure.
l. T.
Loved this place! We celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary here whilst on our holiday in Edinburgh and the staff were so lovely, funny, warm and friendly - it really created a fantastic atmosphere in the restaurant for everyone! The food was absolutely delicious 😋 We ate out at many restaurants this week so had lots to compare and this one was definitely one of our favs! 💕 They gave me and my husband a free whisky to taste for our anniversary too which was so sweet! 💕Loved it - we will be back!
M. B.
Take the tour, then test your new found knowledge in the bar with the extensive selection of whiskeys available. I've also had a meal here which was nicely cooked and presented.
J. K.
I ordered a desert from the bar. Desert was amazing! Also had the luxury to try many whiskies :) do come here before or after the tour!
P. S.
Excellent service and food. Thanking you
L. Z.
Excellent meals and serving
I. P.
During our recent trip we had dinner here once - delicious and fine dining quality. We had lunch here too - great sized portions and light. We also did the Whiskey Experience which was good. Overall, a great experience and amazing food.
D. W.
Not as good as previous visits. I had Stovies and they were my first and last experience of them, the dish of lamb and pots were just swimming in a runny greasy gravy. Easily the most unappetizing thing Ive ever been served. Reat of my group were happy with their food.
D. T.
Wonderful restaurant attached to The Scotch Whisky Experience. Food was great and the scotch selection was vast. I was able to try several drams of scotch that i'll likely never find back home in the states. Prices were reasonable as well. Most standard drams were 3-4 pounds and the high end stuff went up from there. They even had a couple of Port Ellen offerings available by the dram that are nearly impossible to find.
J. W.
This place is fantastic, service was first class, staff first class & food excellent. I went for my birthday with my family and had a great time, will definitely be back.
E. Y.
Spacious and cozy. Service was good. Order the mussels, beef pot and tapas. Mussels and the beef pot were good. Tapas was average though. Price was very reasonable.
K. T. M.
Awesome and very tasty food. Lauryn was one of our waitress ,she was very friendly and explain to us the tapas and the food menu. Really nice place.
s. e.
Although there was only one lady running around during noon, it was still a great experience. It was a busy place. I did not mind waiting few minutes. Our food came right away anyway. I guess all the food that we tried never dissapointed us.
C. G.
Great 5 course meal. Amazing food and amazing service! Excellent presentation and exquisite taste.
J. L.
Absolutely delicious meal, I had chicken stuffed with haggis wrapped in bacon. Fantastic selection of whiskies. Superb service, thank you Jordan.
M. B.
Excellent food, very reasonably priced
Fish broth was sublime, so was the venison
The selection of whiskies would take weeks to get through with drams from £3.20 upwards, which is cheaper than most pubs.
Headed back there for lunch the next day
I will be back next time I visit Edinburgh
S.
Friendly staff, decent prices and delicious food, I will definitely be back!
S. C.
I always go there when I visit, love the place and food. The vegetarian haggis is my favourite in Edinburgh. The scottish tapas are good too 🙂
R. M.
Experienced this restaurant as part of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo package. Food was just right, loved that everything was locally sourced and they educated you where from.
T. E.
Food was decent- good quality ingredients well prepared, cooked and put together. Lacked punch or any sort of bold flavour though. A bit of seasoning would go a long way. I started with a fish broth with saffron and ginger which was nice- fish poached perfectly in the creamy broth but really lacking any kick of ginger or earthiness of saffron. The venison for main course was tender and cooked perfectly but again the sauce, while having a near perfect consistency and shine lacked any sort of deep flavour which would go so well. Even a little bit of salt would have perked these dishes up, so I did add some myself.
The place itself lacked atmosphere- the spacing for Covid no doubt contributing to that but the restaurant feels a little like a gift shop/cafeteria. The furniture is a major cause of this with varnished pine tabletops devoid of any decoration or dinner settings. The little paper pockets that contain your cutlery (another Covid measure probably) and the salt and pepper sachets (which you will need for your food) add to the cafeteria feel.
Service was ok- everyone was helpful, well presented and courteous. Overall the staff seemed a little bit green in terms of knowledge and experience and could be a bit more on top of clearing menus, glasses, etc to provide more space on the table.
Overall it was ok, but the menu and prices suggest a fine dining experience that didn't quite materialise. A few small tweaks and it could be.
k.
This was literally the most uncomfortable time I had in Scotland. So we went in to try some haggis, as you do in Scotland, and they offer us this huge menu of alcohol so we go "oh okay I guess we have to order whiskey then" and we try to order it but they Id us. I don't like being ided it makes me feel very uncomfortable and like I'm being watched since I don't have one. I didn't get ided anywhere in Scotland and I went into a strip club the day prior. So it really shook me up. Then it felt like a pretty big deal and they kept apologising and I felt bad because that's like 50% of their revenue gone because we can't order drinks now, then they turned the lights on and they were shining right into my eyes and I was too shaken up to ask them to turn it off, especially if they said no. Then they didn't accept cash so I couldn't tip them, then I moped around Edinburgh because I had litteraly the most uncomfortable and anxious experience in that resturant. It makes my hands shake just thinking about it. It wasn't necessarily an awful or traumatic experience, it just was sooo uncomfortable and awkward, and I felt like it was going to ruin my whole trip. Anyway, suffice to say I didn't get ided anywhere else. The resturant seems nice and clean and it's really just a whiskey bar, the food is fine and is honestly pretty cheap. I think our total was only £25 and we bought a lot of food. We definitely would of spent more on drinks lmao.
C.
Good place to eat with family, not only to drink whisky. Typical Scottish food, clean and fast service.
J. B.
The selection of whiskey Is second to none, the food is fantastic and all of the staff are knowledgeable extremely friendly and they can even cater for you if you don't like whiskey. Served by Billy would not go anywhere else.
L. P. (.
The whiskey menu is large. The food, delicious. 10/10
t. a.
Ordered the highland tasting menu and cheese board. Great experience
R. B.
An amazing selection of whiskeys (and other spirits) - perfect to try each "by the dram" and the staff really have a passion for it, and know their stuff. We had a great time!
P. R.
Fabulous place. The food was devine and the staff were very pleasant and informative.
A. P. A.
It looks like a tourist trap, but the food is great and they have an amazing diversity of whiskey. The staff is pretty helpful and insightful in terms of scotch knowledge.
B. R.
We did a whiskey tasting of regional and speyside and it was a lot of fun and enjoyable. I would recommend it if you would like to taste the different flavors and personal preference.
S. N.
An elegant place according to our expectations...with a huge variety of whiskeys...and the appropriate help!
Y. L.
Nice lunch for seafood and steak. Highland hot chocolate tastes great.
A. P.
I've yet to have a bad meal in this building! Tonight we had the tasting menu and couldn't recommend it enough - a real taste of Scotland, and so reasonably priced.
g. c.
Food was amazing we all loved our food my haggis, neeps and tatties were amazing
E. d. R.
After exploring the Edinburg Castle is Amber Restaurant the best place to drink and eat. It's just a stair below the Whisky Shop and if you take the elevator to the first floor , you will be at the Whisky Expirience.
A. R.
Fabulous evening with helpful and knowledgeable staff. Food was excellent and the whiskey sampler a great way to turn dinner into a real Scottish experience.
D. M.
Lamb stovies and Old Pulteney whisky. Great visit!
J. T.
Excellent service, great food, even better whiskey at a reasonable price. Couldn't ask for more!
c. a.
Huge range of whiskeys to try out if you have a deep pocket of course but there are reasonable offers and the customer service is spot on
T. D. M.
Great venue for wedding or party, excellent food and staff. Highly recommended.
陈.
Warm, comfortable place that offers tasty meal.
g. g.
Great experiece. Must visit place for the whisky lovers!
R. B.
Food was really nice. The staff was amazing. Really Really warm welcome when it had been snowing a blizzard up at the castle. They took our coats of us so they could dry. The soup starter (carrot and ginger) was one of the best soups I have ever tasted. And the main was equally delicious. They even brought a cake out for my grandads birthday and a tot of his favourite whisky. Really really would recommend to anyone.
J. H.
Beautiful place that mostly requires a reservation. Prices are high but great scotch.
A. S.
Staff was superb! We were able to describe and name our favorite scotches and the knowledgeable staff provided recommendations for new distilleries to compliment our existing likes while expanding our tastes. We walked away having tried many new dislleries and with a lesson in the history and science of scotch whiskey! Plus the price was reasonable!! Compared to pubs outside the royal mile the drams were very similarly priced and did not reflect a traditional tourist trap price inflation.
K. D. W.
Close to 5 stars actually. A very interesting and unique place. Whisky Heaven. Bottle shop and separate tasting bar and a great restaurant. All inside the one building.
The attached pic is just a small fraction of what is inside.
Our lunch was perfect for the ambience of the whole set up and staff were very friendly and helpful.
The position of Amber Restaurant (Whisky Heaven) is a few steps down from Edinburgh Castle, an added positive.
If I was a single Malt Whisky aficionado, which I am not, I would definitely travel from other far flung countries to experience this place. More than 420 varieties of Scotch Whisky is available here.
J. T.
Friendly staff, good food and amazing selection of whisky. However I have to say I'm used to larger servings of whisky.
P. K.
Absolutely gorgeous food! Superb service and super friendly staff, definitely worth visiting if you're in the area
A.
Stunning food and drink here. Truly amazing experts on various whisky brands and types! Highly recomend anyone here!
J. C.
Absolutely amazing staff and brilliant food! We had the set menu (Taste of Scotland) and it was delicious. The staff were happy and friendly the whole meal!
Not sure about cost value as we won the meal with a competition.
P. B.
A great little bar/restaurant underneath the Whisky Experience on the Royal Mile - Much better than you might expect to come across in such a tourist location. Good for coffee and cake - I would recommend the coffee late with whisky and the gluten free carrot cake! Obviously a great range of whiskys too. Very clean.
F. A.
Lovely food and drink very close to the castle with reasonable prices. The staff is quick & very helpful. Was a little chilly out so tried the hot toddy, soup of the day and Chef's selection with Whiskey. Everything was very good. If you are not sure whats in the dish the staff is happy to explain.
E. F.
After attending the silver whisky tour, I had a booking for the Amber restaurant and I'm so glad I did! The food was amazing! Please keep your chef his amazing in cooking satisfying amazing comfort food! I don't usually like mussels but I had the cream and shallot mussels and they were amazing! The mini pots were great as starters and dessert paired with whiskys are great! Would come here again!
D. A.
Come for the whiskey, stay for the whiskey. Great whiskey, great service. Didn't eat the food, but it's probably great too.
W. D.
Amazing!
I come here every time I come to Edinburgh.
If you want to try some new and exotic whiskey's, can't reccomed this place enough.
The prices are fair and the staff of knowledgeable.
Great place!
B. C.
Been here a few times now, and the choice of whisky is excellent. Only three stars though, because the service is just a little too slow, and for some reason it always seems to be uncomfortably hot in there. Definitely worth a visit - but dress light and leave plenty of time!
B. T.
If you want to eat before or after visiting The castle - this is the place to be. If you want to do whisky tasting in a high end place - this is the place to go
A. C.
Nice place to eat, the food is good but nothing that was extraordinary. It was suggested on our guide saying that they have a lot of main course with whisky, well I am afraid it is not.
Some of the waiters were look like theyre were veeeery busy but the restaurant was half empty.
I am not saying I will not come back but it will not be my first choice. Tasty desserts!

We went here with the package deal combined with a visit to the Whisky experience and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The service was the most impressive aspect but the food was very tasty as well.
The menu choice is run-of-the-mill Scottish fine dining so if you haven’t sampled this kind of cuisine before then you will love trying the Scottish selection on offer. For that I can thoroughly recommend it.
However being someone who likes trying different dishes and different takes on Scottish food I found this lacking a bit of inventiveness.
As it was part of the deal it was reasonably priced although if you came in here normally I would probably say it was overpriced.
With it being part of the whisky experience it means there is loads of whiskys on offer so this was my favourite thing about the place. If you like whisky you’ll love it. Would be nice to see them do some whisky matching with the food.

The food was absolutely stunning. At first I was skeptical thinking this restaurant would probably only have good whiskey and the rest would be OK-ish.
Boy was I wrong!
The food was spectacular and trumped my expectations easily. I'd recommend visiting the place if you're nearby.
Prices range from 17-25 pounds for a main dish.
F. B.
While the food is ok. Their whisky selection and bar area is amazing. The prices are reasonable considering the selection. I found several new whisky's to add to my collection due to this experience.
D. M. B.
Sincerely, I was expecting a lot more from this place, by reading recensions and notes around. It is true that the whisky is at the center of everything and the staff is extremely helpful with that, but I if you call yourself a restaurant you should be able to cook nice plates.. The mussels were amazing, but for the rest it seemed like a plate created from a buffet. I was expecting a dinner with whisky tasting for every course and more attention regarding the choices, but probably being so close to the Castle brought them to the touristic side of Edinburgh
A. K.
Great food for a good price. Friendly helpful staff. Will help you choose which scotch to try! Lots to choose from. We enjoyed the tapas taster, soup, two pots and a dram for less than £30. Definitely recommend!
L. C.
One of the cheapest and best selection whisky bars in Edinburgh. I haven't tried the food, but the knowledgeable whisky staff will find a whisky both beginner and veteran whisky drinkers will love. For prices starting around £2.50 a dram! Surprising, seeing as it is right next to the castle!

Interesting and informative tour. Whisky tasting very good. Tasting menu was fantastic.

I have taken many friends and visitors to the Scotch Whisky Experience shop and the tour, but had never been to the restaurant, although the projected animation at the entrance did make me curious. However, when I finally got to have a set meal here, my curiosity turned into somewhat disappointment.
My starter, Cullen Skink, a traditional Scottish classic, was thin and light with little fish bits and lots of potatoes, nowhere near as creamy as it was supposed to be - disappointing! For my main, the cod, tasted very nice - the sour tomato sauce was really appetizing, and enhanced the tenderness and sweetness of the fish and the flavours of other vegetables. My dessert, sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, was delicious - the pudding was crispy on the surface and soft and moist inside. It was not too sweet and the caramel sauce was simply perfect. However, service was SO slow that we had to keep feeding ourselves bread while waiting for our mains.
While I liked the rustic decor of the restaurant, and the beautiful collection of whisky bottles behind the bar, and the waiters and waitresses were very friendly, I think the quality of the food and the service speed are the two most important things of a restaurant. Therefore, I could not rate it any higher based on my experience today.
K. B.
Excellent service, reasonably priced and delicious food. Dessert was 5 star. We came away really happy (and we'd only tried one whisky each so it wasn't the effect of the alcohol!)
A. C.
Just recently found this place. I'll be back every time I'm back in Edinburgh. The food is to die for and the whisky selection, I'm already in heaven.
Couldn't believe the selection and all at prices that just beg you to have a double.
You'll know when I've been in by the trail of drool round the shop lol.
R. J.
We visited Amber for a drop off during a special trip to Edinburgh. Not disappointed , very knowledgable staff and the food was absolutely amazing reasonably priced too. Lunch, whisky and wine plus coffees with freshly baked treats was in the region of £50 for 2
M. M.
Really nice atmosphere ! However food Menu didn't reflect what they had and considering its in the Whisky Exchange , the selection was a bit limited , albeit the menu is very extensive !!! Cheese board was good and Gaelic coffee cracking !
M. C.
The food, service, staff and the restaurant as a whole are fantastic.
We did a tasting menu and had various whisky choices paired with each course. Possibly one of the best meals I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
J. K.
Obviously the whisky is nice, but the food is a plus too. Locally sourced and you can tell. Scottish will never be one of the world's top cuisines, but this place does a great job with it, which is to be appreciated and commended.
T. D.
The staff was friendly and the food was so good. Totally recommend this restaurant
S. E.
A wonderful place to do a whisky tasting. Great variety to choose from, knowledgable staff to assist with your choice, and a great atmosphere. Part of the Whisky Experience, and a must stop on the Royal Mile!
S. T.
Lovely restaurant, great helpful staff ,vast choice of whisky obviously and the food was delicious. I had muscles and then the seafood platter which I really enjoyed. My husband had the Scottish tapas which was a good taste of Scottish fare !
Y. K.
The best place to drink whiskey in Edinburgh. There are numerous choices of whiskey from Scotland. A bar tender there is very kind and knowledgeable, and he kindly helped me choosing the right whiskey for me or learning about Scottish whiskey. And the bar is really reasonable! If I come to Edinburgh again, I would definitely go there. Thanks for lovely whiskeys and your advice!
P. L.
Taste of Scotland menu was ok
L. W.
Exceptional meal with great tasting flights prepared by Ewan. He answered all of our many questions and even took on the role of lead photographer. Thank you to all the staff for making my dad's 70th birthday unforgettable.
J. S.
My favorite restaurant on this vacation so far. Very fairly priced with being so close to the castle. Our waitress was amazing and the bartender very knowledgeable with whiskey. Our meals and dessert was perfect.
R. W.
Great food at a reasonable price!
A. M.
I have to admit I thought this was going to be a bit of a tourist trap, given the location, bit was completely wrong.
I had three absolutely fantastically cooked courses.
The was also excellent: we even got a complementary whisky at the bar afterwards.
Would definitely come back. Excellent
R. F.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the bar.
The barman (a young lad) had a vast amount of knowledge, and was happy to share it. You can tell he is passionate about whisky.
I went in, wanting to try a couple of whiskys in particular.
That are a bit harder to get a hold of easily, in my neck of the woods.
They were readily available (No surprise, given the extensive range, that you have)
(The Glenfarclas 21yr, old was fantastic).
After speaking with the barman, and describing my favourite types of whisky
He made an excellent recommendation, which I very much enjoyed.
So, all in all -
• Great, relaxed atmosphere
• Fantastic staff
• Amazing whisky selection
I definitely intend to return......(Got to make my way through that selection somehow)
N. B.
Delicious: every dish we ordered was excellent. I highly recommend the Cullen skink followed by venison. Prices are surprisingly reasonable... if you take location and quality of food into account it was a veritable bargain!
D. R.
Every part of the meal was top notch. I had venison an it was cooked to perfection, tender and perfectly spiced. The gnocchi and other sides were also excellent. Fantastic place.
S. H.
Absolutely fab . Definitely recommend it to anyone.
d. h.
A lot of different scotches. A lot. It was nice, it seemed too busy for the limited staff but no bother.
A. J.
Great food and service! Amazing selection of scotch whisky
R. S.
Great whiskeys. Great atmosphere. Friendly staff.
T. G.
Foods were very good and reasonably priced. We were like 3 mins before their lunch hours over, but they still accommodated to our lunch request and we even able to order their 2 course lunch special. Extremely friendly staffs.
P. H.
A good selection of whiskies and a decent menu in a relaxing environment. Staff have a vast knowledge of the selection of whiskies and are there to assist. Could spend hours there, especially if you are into whiskies.
Y. T.
Learned a lot about Scotch here.
P. K.
We already visit this lovely restaurant. Food served inside it's amazing also staff was very friendly and helpful. I'm sure if we come next time to Edinburgh we come back. 6/5 stars.
J. Z.
Definitely recommend this restaurant! You may think it would be very expensive as it is a part of Whiskey Museum, but it is actually really cheap, while the quality, presentation and taste remains very high. Must visit place, you won't regret.
E. H.
Absolutely gorgeous establishment. Huge array of whisky, staff who really know their stuff, great prices too. Absolutely fantastic.
S. A.
Very nice place to chill out after exploring Edinburgh. We had an excellent sandwich and a very good scone. Coffee was great too...
T. S.
This place just get better and better ,everytime I go there....getting a new make over just now ..can wait to see it ......hope they have a Scottish theme night ,one night !!! ....best place to experience Scottish food and drink at good prices !
Z. L.
From reception to service everything were great. However, we ordered 2 portions of the steam shetland mussels and they don't seem to be fresh. We left 1 plate untouched and when the waitress clear it she don't even bother to ask why we left that particular plate intact! Our table ordered rump of lamb, monkfish, duck breast, soup of the day which was carrot/coriander and pots of venison chorizo and lamb stew......We finished all EXCEPT the shetland mussels. Maybe next time I should just be more vocal.
W. T.
Don't be fooled by exteriors - this is one of the best whisky bars in Edinburgh. Cheap prices, very knowledgeable and friendly staff and a huge selection of rare drams.
E. M.
Definitely a hidden gem! Situated near Edinburgh Castle, within the Whisky Experience, 'Amber' is a great wee place to sample some of Scotland's best cuisine. Although being from Scotland, it's still nice to have haggis, neaps and tatties sometimes and this restaurant did not disappoint. I have to say that the prosecco to celebrate a birthday was not half bad too!
A. A. A.
Amazing!!! Andrew is the best whiskey expert I ever met. He will led you to choose the right whiskey for your taste if you are a beginner or will help you to discover new ones if you already has some knowledge.
r. j.
Wonderful restaurant with great service. I really liked haggis before I went here after trying theirs I truly love it. Amazing scotch selection.
P. C.
Hidden under the tourist attraction that the Whisky Experience is, Amber is a pleasant surprise. Downstairs in the same building, this restaurant and bar has an amazing selection of the best whiskys in Scotland, a very nice menu (and quite reasonably prized) and some fantastic cakes and teas. It is quite quiet, especially from MOnday to Friday and it's a good spot to have a rest, enjoy a cup of lovely tea and read a book, or to enjoy some cake with a friend. And, if you like whiskey well... then you can call Amber "paradise"
C. H.
Great service and authentic Scottish food plus an extensive menu of whiskey. Highly recommended before your whiskey tour!
K. W.
Lovely atmosphere, service was good and staff very friendly. Lots to choose from, we had the scottish tapas as we wanted something different, it was lovely, and very well priced.

Good food, fab whisky selection and good decor. Location can't be beaten either. Service rather slow though.
