Reviews of The Cheese Society
g. h.
I didn't have time for a cheese-related lunch today, which was a bit of a shame as the food is always good. However I had what was probably THE best brownie I have ever eaten instead. It was amazing. I also came away with a sourdough baguette and a wild garlic La Bousse
G. C.
A little 16 seated restaurant with a delightful cheesemonger on the side? Or is it a delightful cheesemonger with a little 16 seat restaurant on the side.
Either way, The Cheese Society is excellent. Staff are friendly and attentive and the menu has some great items to try
I personally bought some cheese afterwards and was given some great advice based on what I was looking for and to suit my budget.
I look forward to returning to try more of the whole menu!
T. C.
It had cheese. Lots of cheese. Cold cheese and cooked cheese which was incredible. Puddings were very tasty even tough one didn't have cheese in it.
A must stop if you in Lincoln in my opinion.

Infrequently does the description 'outstanding ' come to me but from the second we stepped through the door we were very impressed. The bright bubbly staff, the cheese selection spread enticingly ahead and some superb giftwares caught our attention. A quick espresso and herb scone with cheese encouraged us to return 3 hours later for lunch. Hey guys! These folk seriously know the business of making customers welcome to say nothing of a truly well made espresso and Tartiflette to die for.
I. T.
I've ordered a box of different cheese online for the first time and I'm so happy with everything. Firstly, the cheese selection is great! Some really great finds and gems in their offering. Their shipping was fast and the package was well thought out and nice. I absolutely love they use waxed papered, it's a more expensive option but the better one from a product perspective. We will be returning clients for sure.

Went for lunch as first timers and WOW!!!
The staff were so friendly, beautiful clean place and the food was absolutely excellent.
We shared the rabochon platter and meat platter. Both dishes were extremely well presented, fresh and flavour packed.
Very reasonably priced for 2 adults for lunch. Not a French fry or chicken nugget in sight which was nice 😁
Overall I can say we will definitely be revisiting.... and im already looking forward to it.
Well done 👏
T. I.
Specialist cheese shop with bar wher eyou can try different cheeses before you buy or as a snack or treat.
J. S.
A different eating experience. Very enjoyable and freshly prepared dishes. Small but cosy environment, highly recommended if you like cheese 🧀
M. H.
If you like cheese a great place to eat a meal and purchase a good selection. Owner also has good wine experience.
C. S.
Came here with 2 friends for my birthday lunch, and it did not disappoint! We arrived early (11.30am) as there aren't many seats and we were fine. By 12.03pm it was full! We ordered a small dish each (fruit bread/scones/pork pie) and one small sharing platter, which was more than enough. Next time I'll try one of the bigger dishes - it all sounded delicious! Service was great and price was reasonable. Will be back!
L. H.
Amazing place to eat or shop if you love cheese. We tried the fondue which came with a lovely selection of baby potatoes, bread sticks and sour dough bread.
K. J.
I don't often give 5 stars but the food quality here was exceptional and very reasonably priced. I could imagine it would be a tight if full and you would be sharing a table with others so worth bearing in mind if that's not your thing. but was quite when we were in so not an issue. Staff were friendly and helpful.
K. S.
Went in for cheese and wasn't disappointed! Food was really delicious, if around the area would very much go back! We went quite early and had no trouble getting seats but was really busy only an hour later
G. W.
I did an online order for a gift. The ordering process was really smooth with a wide variety of cheeses available. The packaging was eco friendly and the explanation of cheese etiquette made the experience really fun and was a great extra touch. The cheeses we picked were excellent! The portion sizes were great and the tastes were delicious. We particularly enjoyed smoked Snowdonia and truffle gouda. The customer service was prompt and the friendliest I’ve ever experienced from an online order. I highly recommend The Cheese Society for brilliantly tasty cheeses, great portions, and very good customer service.
M. T.
Absolutely a wonderful place to spend my birthday Drove 45 miles to get there. Food was delicious at a reasonable price Staff very efficient and friendly . I do recommend here .
R. R.
Started going here for lunch when my other half was a student and soon became a regular spot for us. Recently visited for my birthday and it's still a favourite. The food is fresh and delicious, The chef obviously puts thought and care into their dishes. All the staff are incredibly friendly, service is great. There's a good selection plus an amazing cheese deli with every cheese you could ever want. Definitely a place to visit if ever in Lincoln.
S. H.
Amazing food at great prices for the portions and the quality, with lovely helpful staff who want to make sure your questions are answered. One of my favourite spots in Lincoln. Pictured is the Mac and cheese and the baked camembert in bread.
M. J.
Loved the cheese board we had. If I can suggest, please put a little bit more pickle, bread and crackers.
H. F.
I received a gift box, as a present and absolutely loved it. Great selection of delicious cheeses, which were beautifully presented. I then ordered a gift for my friend. After I gave the wrong address, they were really friendly and managed to rearrange the order to be delivered again (to the correct address) the same day! Great service, my friend was delighted. Very happy.
M. S.
Nice little cheese shop with a good range of UK and foreign cheeses, and there's a small cafe there too
A. C.
If you love cheese it's the only place to go!! Love it
S. H.
Easily the best lunch option in town for any cheese lover. The rarebit with Boston sausage is a real joy, and the temptation to take some cheese home from the counter was too much to resist!
j. h.
What a fantastic place. We had lunch here after reading some good reviews, and were not disappointed. Really nice food, lovely staff and a great atmosphere.
H. G.
The Cheese Society is quite unique. Tucked away in a quiet corner just off the busy centre of Lincoln, they stock more cheeses than you have ever seen in one place. But don't worry if you are a cheese beginner; Lucy and her team are on hand to guide you to the tastes and textures you like, with little sample nibbles to make sure it is just what you want. For those of you who are not able to get to Lincoln, never fear, they are also online.
l. w.
The cheese is beautifully tasty and fresh. The delivery service is great too. The only thing that lets these cheeses down is the very short dates….only 12 days in the deliveries we have had which invariably means some waste.
s. f.
Excellent online service , cheese was well packed and arrived still chilled . Delicious cheese and superb quality , really pleased will def order again
l. p.
We popped in on the off chance they had a spare table for two and they happily accommodated us (even though I looked like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards) All of the staff were so friendly and service was prompt but laid back. The menu was concise but we we easily found something for each of us. I had a baked camembert with cured meats, sounds simple but was so well made and presented, it was delicious. My husband had Welsh rarebit, a decent portion for a lunchtime and he really enjoyed it. It was very reasonably priced. Can't wait to return, especially for one of their cheese and wine pairing evenings.
M. K.
What a lovely shop and cafe! Friendly and attentive staff and fantastic cheese dishes.
J. “. C. B.
A cheese heads paradise! Great selection. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. No problem with try before you buy.
w. “. t.
Beautiful food and friendly staff as always
T. M.
An excellent lunch of mixed cheese board and scone. Cheeky glass of wine too. Lovely staff and a nice atmosphere. Recommended
M. G.
Amazing selection of cheeses!! Everything tasted delicious and the staff was so wonderful and helpful!
J. T.
Extremely friendly staff. And lots of cheese. If you like both of these things then I'd recommend coming here for lunch!
C. W.
Interesting little cafe. If you like cheese definitely the place to go. Many varieties.
S. B.
Always a top favourite, the service is friendly and efficient, the cheese choice is epic and even though its small it's worth trying to get a table for lunch anyway! If there was ever a tip to getting a table then I would say going at around 11 is a safer bet. They also have a cheese counter with samples to try, and they sell a few other bits like cheese boards, lunch bags and anything else that goes with cheese!!!
I. W.
Simply superb, one of those places that do what they do best and don't try and over complicate things. Their expertise with the cheese they deal in clearly came through into the food. What appears to be a short and simple menu is actually a list of varied and excellent dishes. Will definitely go back when next in the area.
P. B.
When I lived in Lincoln we had some fantastic, memorable lunches here. Now I'm up in Scotland and ordered a cheese subscription for my other half's birthday. The cheese was an interesting selection and all delicious, beautifully packaged and arrived on the day it was scheduled too, complete with an ice pack to keep it fresh. It came with tasting notes and was a real treat - thank you! Hoping to visit the next time we're back in Lincoln.
R. S.
Excellent great cheese dishes
C. C.
I have mixed feeling writing this review, as I had such high hopes and saw the great reviews, plus the staff seem lovely. So I don't want this review to sound over critical or harsh. However we left feeling a little.... underwhelmed?? Nothing stood out as such, good or bad!? It was a nice overall experience, but it wasn't the memorable one we'd hoped for? which we thought it would be... for the price / reviews and awards? it didn't seem to tally? .... On reflection and re reading the menu, we realise now, its because half the bits were missing off the platter from what was stated on the menu?
We had the £13 option cheese & meats.
(prices have either gone up and now there's less offerings? And they haven't updated the website menu, which states £12 for the 3 cheese and meat option with alot more bits included)? Can't be sure?!
S. P.
Must do in Lincoln. Perfect location to park the car, have food and then walk to the cathedral and castle. Serve local food and drinks at a good price
M. R.
Lovely vibe to this place, really helpful staff and amazing food.
H. B.
Consistently excellent - one of our favourite places to go. Cheese and the cafe menu are great, lovely drinks selection, amazingly friendly and welcoming staff and very well priced. Highly recommend - a great independent to choose if visiting our city.
S. R.
Great wine tasting experience. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
J.
First visit and how helpful was the staff member. We bought far too much cheese 🧀 and other goodies.
Must go back again and try out their cafe menu
T. A.
I haven't visited the café, I ordered a couple of cheeses online. I watched Rick Stein's Cornwall where he visited a Cornish/Dutch Gouda maker and The Cheese Society were the only ones who had stock. I also added another Cornish cheese (Cornish Jack) to try alongside. I usually eat, Époisses, Chaorce , Vacherin, Livarot etc so wasn't sure what to expect with a Cornish Gouda and a Cornish stye-Emmental. Both decent sized (250g/1/2lb) cheeses were in superb condition and very rich and flavoursome - completely different to the mass produced flavourless rubbery versions that we usually see in the UK; more in common with a good cheddar, parmesan, comté etc. The gouda even has calcium lactate crystals like in the finest Dutch goudas. Delivery of the artisan and recyclable package was a great experience - tasting sheet etc. Delivery time was fast. Perfectly aged cheese and perfect service - I'll definitely use them again. Great on-line experience.
C. D.
Had a really good cheese fondue for lunch, pleasant surroundings, friendly staff. Would highly recommend.
P. W.
Fantastic deli type eatery, great selection of cheeses, we met the owner by chance, on our first night in Lincoln, she told us about The Cheese Society. So glad we bumped into this very friendly couple or we would have missed out on an amazing lunch. Keep up the good work.
L. D.
Wanted to visit for a long time and weren't disappointed. So difficult to choose from the menu, everything sounds so delicious! In the end we shared a tartiflete and goats cheese salad and were so impressed we followed that with a 7 piece cheese board and scoffed the lot. The blue Monday from Alex James a particular favourite. Shame they don't open Sunday or I'd be back for more!
M. C.
A rare treat for my wife and I to be child free on a Saturday and upon weighing up our options we agreed a workout at the Gym, get our best dressed look on and start afternoon drinking. So we did just that. A key element to successfully getting through a Day drinking session is a good meal near the start, and the cheese society cheese and meat board is enough for two to share and accompanied by a bottle of wine, it kills two birds with one stone. We had a lovely time commenting on each cheese and trying to impress some semblance of knowledge on each other. It was a lovely start to a drunken afternoon, the staff are helpful, friendly and know their product like the back of their hand. To top it off a vegan American and her clearly non-vegan partner came in as we were finishing. She wanted to know if they did any vegan options on the menu. And to my great surprise, she was accommodated. Who takes a vegan to eat at a cheese society. lol. Anyway, if you have never eaten here, you should probably not if you are a vegan, but as the name suggests, anyone who likes cheese can quickly feel part of a special society.
S. G.
Love the place! Every time I go to Lincoln it's my must-go place! Great dishes and desserts to die for. Great coffee and cheese dishes are yummy. One day I ate so much cheese there I got a headache right there! Lol The macaroni cheese excellent and you can eat and buy cheese and other things cheese-related there. Just go I'd you're a lover a cheese!
R. W.
Fantastic cheese, super friendly staff. I've never eaten inside, but if you're after an impressive cheese board or a great gift for a cheese fiend... this is your place. (They also sell vouchers, so if you're less familiar with the World of Cheese, you can still make a cheese lover's day).
S. B.
Loved this place. A must visit for any cheese lover.
J. S.
I visited The Cheese Society for the first time last week and it was incredible. Very high quality food at a reasonable price, less than £10 a main. You can also buy a wide variety of cheeses and I am already planning my next return visit!! I would highly recommend!!
S. S.
Absolutely delicious food and amazing cheeses and chutneys! Worth a visit!
P. H.
Funnily enough, they sell cheeses
D. S.
A small cafe style restaurant with a large selection of quality produce which would satisfy any discerning cheese lover. You can enjoy a meal in or take a selection of cheeses with you from the cold counter. The meals we had were freshly prepared and of high quality. A quaint and quite unique experience which is recommended.
P. J.
Lovely little place. Great local products. Interesting rotation of cheese based dishes to eat in.
G. H.
Sadly a cramped eatery..would benefit from extended dining area.would gladly have tried something different other than the overpriced cheese board . Very sparse for £19..Drinks were expensive too. Unless you happened to be waiting over twenty minutes for one of the three tables. Then a large glass of red was offered free of charge..Parking is close-by.cheese tasting should be enjoyed at leisure..not a rushed affair. The girls at service were fab, hence three stars.
G. W.
Always a tasty lunch at this eatery. Good value also and a nice friendly atmosphere due to seating arrangements. Good selection of cheeses to purchase of course!
P. M.
Staff very friendly and food delicious 😋

I recently ordered a Solo selection to be delivered to Southampton for my son's birthday (he's a cheese fan). The order process and communication from the company was great.
Unfortunately they were slightly let down by their delivery courier so the delivery day was missed. But this wasn't the fault of the Cheese Society and it was very quickly rectified and my son is very happy with it 👍👍
I must mention Lucie who was a great help with sorting it all out.
Definitely recommended.
F. T.
As I couldn't visit, I rang Lucie and asked if she could send me some more cheeses.
She's so knowledgeable and passionate about cheese, I always ask for her recommendations as well as my favourites.
Well, this selection is particularly gorgeous!
We loved a really creamy goats cheese, Selles sur Cher, and the Godminster was delicious as ever.
All this and delivered the following day, my husband was one happy dad!
D. D.
Fab and a unique place for a light lunch, and hot drinks. Superb range of cheeses, chutney, crackers, etc. A place to visit and experience. Cheese scones are absolutely divine. A real treat of a visit. Do not miss out on visiting The Cheese Society when in Lincoln.
D. S.
If you love cheese, this place is for you. The cafe is quite small, but the cheese-themed menu is amazing, especially the brilliant Cheese Souffle.
The cheese selection is very good, with a selection of domestic and imported.
The wait staff are very competent and friendly.
Highly recommended!
S. P.
Not a good start. We were third in the queue and asked to wait outside. We only wanted to buy cheese. We were left outside and forgotten. We were not happy.
Cheeses we bought were very good but customer service needs to be improved for the future.
L. C.
Absolutely amazing. I had the baked camembert and it was cooked to perfection. Would definitely visit again.
M. S.
Great range of cheeses and such knowledgeable and passionate staff when it comes to their products too. Meals in the cafe are great as well. Can't recommend them highly enough.
D.
VERY nice food (not as cheesey as you might think!). Fantastic variety of delicious cheeses. Lovely people. Great value for money.
H. H.
Excellent food, excellent cheese and amazing service. We asked for similar places to visit to eat for dinner and lunch over the next few days and we were given a list of about 10 places that the team thought we would like. Oh, and the mac & cheese - no words.
M. A.
A first visit and a glorious assault on the senses and cheese receptors. Lovely, friendly welcome, a small cafe area and wide range of cheeses and informative guide to what you may like. Has a range of chutneys and pickles and various utensils. Cheddar is in a minority here.
I. H.
Superb food and great service.
L. S.
A delicious stop for buying cheese or enjoying a quick bite. Absolutely divine! The well informed staff/owners are always helpful with suggestions of cheese combinations for entertaining or a recipe. They also have farm fresh eggs, hand-baked breads and a few deli meats to round out your nosh. If you care tho eat-in, the small cafe can be summed up in three words: Try the souffle! Mmmmmmm!
O. P.
The most incredible food! Presentation is immaculate and very well priced for what you get! Best cheese in Lincoln, without a doubt
S. H.
So much cheese!!! Great value and so helpful when wanting to discover something new. They had a 3 for £5 or 7 for £10 "lucky dip" on selected cuts. We came away with so much for such a good price and had such a good service, if you love cheese try this place!
P. M.
We all enjoyed our visit and the cheese at this refined establishment. They even gave me a doggy bag to take home some of the generous portions which I couldn't eat then and there. The major failing is that I know what Boston Sausages taste like and theirs are a world away . Please get a supply from Mountains in Boston. Pete Milsom
M. D.
My sister ordered us a cheese hamper for Christmas, she was really generous and ordered us a package of 3 to come in Dec, Jan and Feb. The cheese was fantastic and really completed our Christmas yum yums. January - that time of year when you have to be a bit good so The Cheese Society said yes to deliveries to Easter and to take away with us on a late spring break deeper into Cornwall. Use this company for an alternative gift than socks and smellies, it's smelly in its own right but a smell that makes your mouth water when you open the fridge door. Brilliant customer service, wish I was closer to try their cafe.
A. F.
One the best little restaurant in Lincoln. Try the cheese souffle', really yummy. They contribute also to the London Film Society, which is a great cultural initiative in Lincoln.
K. E.
Oh my word! What a fantastic little hidden gem.
T. W.
Although open only at lunchtime, the quality of food is second to none. Beware it is popular. Tables cannot be booked. It is worth the wait! Still fabulous after all these years.
L. M.

Incredible food, so rich and flavourful without making you feel too bloated. There's not a lot of seating so getting a table is tricky!
