Reviews of McTear's | Fine Art and Whisky Auction House
J. S.
I recently won a wine lot at McTear's whisky and wine auction held on 11th November and needed to arrange collection of my wine by courier. I spoke with Ewan Thomson at McTear's, who couldn't have been more helpful, and he kindly packaged and labelled my bottle securely once I'd set up the courier collection. Ewan's communication throughout the process was prompt and very courteous and I'll be happily bidding again at their next appropriate auction. Many thanks!

I have bought quite a few items from McTears now. I have to say they offer a pretty fair service. You can genuinely still bag a bargain. And just to mention that if you do have an issue then speak to Nicky. Nicky has helped me out several times with questions or advice. Very friendly too..cant ask for more than that.
G. M.
I chose McTears based on their longevity and reputation. I cannot speak highly enough of my entire experience with them. From the lovely greeting I received at reception upon entering the "house", to the great expertise, guidance and kindness of Amy Cameron,it was outstanding and I knew I had chosen the best. Selling my recently passed Mum's jewellery was a hard to do but Amy's, much appreciated, understanding helped me through it. My items sold well. I highly recommend McTears and Amy in particular.
Every staff member, including Mark Love, was professional and personable.
I thank you so very much Amy and the rest of the team there.
I wish you all,all the best!!!

Never having approached an auctioneers before, wasn’t sure what to expect. The experience was very straightforward, with one of the Valuers & Auctioneers guiding me through the process from beginning to a very positive end.
Would highly recommend McTears of Glasgow as the first port of call.
M. N.
Many thanks to Euan for his excellent results in the whisky sales department. We were suitably impressed and delighted with the outcomes of 2 recent sales. Well done Euan--we're very grateful we contacted you. Your expertise was very helpful and accurate.
H. R.
I would like to commend M Tears Auctioneers for their trustworthy, flawless expertise. In particular to whisky specialist Ewan Thomas who successfully managed my consignment, in keeping me informed during the process and the hammer price being well within the estimate.
G. S.
Ewan at Mctears made the transport and sale of our Whisky bottles really easy. Great customer service and always on hand to answer questions. We’ll definitely use Mctears again.

I was very pleased with my experience with McTear's Auctions
Sale of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House of an Art Lover Dining Room Furniture. The furniture achieved a hammer price of almost double the top estimate. I was particularly pleased with the professionalism and market knowledge of James Spiridion who managed the sale. I was able to work with James to provide the appropriate detailed background and provenance of the furniture. James also highlighted the furniture by naming the Sale: "Auction For An Art Lover: 19th & 20th Century Design"
With an introductory photo featuring the lot and with reference to this Mackintosh Lot introducing the Auction Description.
The Lot description itself perfectly summarised the lot and its provenance with over 20 photos. This focus on the lot undoubtedly resulted in the excellent outcome of the sale.

Clearly the best Auction House in Glasgow.
I have sold many Items here from Star Wars to Lamps and Lord Of The Rings to Stamp Covers.
I was amazed at how much I received from the Auctions.
Special mention to James who took my Items with charm and sometimes wondering if they would sell well.
They did and sold very well.
Lovely Cafe too with great Soup and Food all reasonably priced.
The Staff were all lovely and helped me bring Items in from the Car.
I had to sell much treasured Items to help my brother who lost his job after 2 Strokes.
I would do it again in a heartbeat and use McTears every time.
Thank you ever body for helping me through a very emotional time.
An easy 5 Star Review.

I have been a client of McTear's, both buying and selling for many years now, moving with them from old to their present premises.
Each of the presentation halls is effectively set out to display the specialist lots at their best. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful from Sandra and her welcoming front desk crew to the boys in the backrooms and let's not forget Jacquie and her team in the cafe.
Altogether a great auction experience!
C. s.
Excellent service and great communication by some of the countries leading experts in fine art and antiques. I was lucky enough to consign a historic shipwreck coin, which quickly attracted the attention of Amy Cameron, who not only provided professional expertise and friendliness, but offered personal input to your prized auction.
J. A.
Been a few years since visiting.
Love these auctions as you never know what you will find. Very professional and helpful teams. Internet has stopped people coming to the auction as you can bid from your home where ever you are. It's a pity used to like the full auctions when you can see the person you are bidding against.

Due to a recent bereavement we found ourselves lost in what to do.
One call to Mctears in Glasgow and all sorted, with a coin collection and various other valuables, China , whisky, ornaments all went in to be assessed free of charge.
Their pleasent and very knowledgeable staff made a difficult task much easier .
Amy Cameron was particularly kind and very respectful of our situation, her advice and knowledge guided us through a difficult time while achieving best possible value for our family . I highly recommend a quick call even if you're not sure what you have ,really lovely folk.

The advice and service I was given was second to none. All professionally dealt with by one of their valuers James Spiridon. Very happy with McTears and would highly recommend a hassle free service to anyone thinking of using this auction house.
G. S.
Have dealt with McTears on a few occasions and always very helpful, polite and accessible for condition reports and accurate. Swift response.
Nicky helped with an enquiry and dealt with shipping fast. Very happy, well done!
L. M.
I buy regularly from the auction and I’m always really impressed with how friendly and efficient all the staff are. Sandra at the front desk always greets you with a smile and couldn’t be more helpful in ensuring customers have a happy experience.
M. B.
I recently used Mactears to sell some toy cars my father had collected. They were very helpful and the whole process from start to finish went very smoothly. A special thanks to James Spiridion who dealt with the process for me.
T. D.
I approached McTear's in regard to an enquiry about selling a painting and from the moment I contacted them I was met with fast, efficient and professional customer service. Their commissions are fair and payment on sold goods was prompt. I will be selling with them again should the need arise.
S. E.
Many thanks to you all for the complete, professional, efficient and friendly service you offered me throughout the auction process.
I am delighted with my purchase and hope to deal with you again soon.
H. Y.
I purchase from Mctears auctions quite regularly and find them to be a very professional auction house, having used many around the UK that are hard to deal with if problems arise, Mctears have always been professional and courteous. Mctears seem to understand that even the auction house sector still needs to offer excellent customer service to gain and retain customers- in my experience many others fall short of this! Well done Mctears!
R. C.
I had a fantastic experience selling with Mctears! This was my first auction and James Spirridon was extremely helpful and very accurate. I will definitely use Mctears again in the future!
K. H.
I have made a number of purchases from McTears over the years, and the most recent was a Marine Chronometer. This required some fairly detailed pre-packing attention to protect the delicate movement during transport.
Needless to say, McTears were happy to carry this out, which they did to perfection and the chronometer arrived safely today after its long journey.
I would unhesitatingly recommend McTears for their professionalism; after-sales service and willingness to go "above and beyond".

Love this place. Very nice staff.

We have spent thousands of pounds at this auction house. Never again! We bid for 2 rugs and collected them from the auction house. Male assistant put them in my car folded up. After 3-4weeks my husband got a call saying they would deliver our rugs ( no mention of picking up the other ones!!) Being honest, I phoned them up and said we already had our rugs. It turned out we had been given the wrong rugs. Their mistake but no apology. Only that the vendor wanted them back and mctears would go to the police if they weren't returned. I was accused of stealing these rugs because I hadn't noticed they were not the same ones I had bid for. Had I not been honest, they would never have known!
I will never deal with this auction house again. Extremely rude staff and incompetent.
C. M.
I was making an enquiry about an unusual ornament. I emailed a picture of the ornament and was told basically is was not of interest to them. The value of the ornament was not that which would be of interest to them. I appreciated their honesty.
P. J.
Extremely great reception and beautiful atmosphere
k. w.
Bought a couple of items from them and no complaints. Will continue to view and buy if there are items of interest to me, hoping to expand into jewellery as well as whisky. Mctears have a wide and varied offering give them a try.
J. M.
Free on site parking that makes moving items from car into auction house very easy
Efficient and honest valuation service without an appointment
Helpful and friendly staff
Clear and accurate on line information on deductions from sale price
Timely emails giving updates of auction dates
On the day email giving update of lot status and hammer price
Prompt payment
Didn't expect and auction house to have a cafe but McTear's does
I had never used an auction house before and McTear's made the process quick, easy and worthwhile. I only made one visit to the auction house to have items valued and the rest was all done on line. McTear's made, what I though would be, a challenging process go very smoothly. Well done and thank you.
l. m.
Great experience having sale valuation
P. S.
Excellent auction house with specialist auctions in arts, whisky and wine and jewellery amongst others but also general sales on a Friday where you can pick up some great bargains. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Excellent and very cheap cafe on site.
J. T.
Sum things to sell more to go under the hammer 🔨
R. E.
Just doing we delivery for customer service was great staff very helpful restaurant inside for we coffee or tea food.
K.
Good introduction for auction novices. Friendly staff, easy to register off and online. Bright well laid out showroom and nice cafe. Can't comment on item range or quality. Plenty of parking, check viewing/bidding times before visiting.
A. W.
Staff are good at sending updates of your lots by email and the service was trouble free. They send out payment by cheque which seems quite outdated and I feel it would be good if they could send payment electronically.
g. p.
For a first time visit the staff were very friendly and helpful. Covid restrictions are clearly marked and easy to follow. Will hopefully be back to try bidding on something 😊
B. B.
Love my auctions…. Absolutely trustworthy. Pictures are just. Thanks team.
E. M.
Well my experience has been overwhemingly positive. I bought a George Wyllie painting and when i picked it up Natasha Raskin congratulated me and was very knowledgeable about George and other artists I enquired about, including Tom Mackenzie's Skye etchings.
Have made several succesful bids at McTear's ranging from whisky to vintage pens, and very pleased with the staff - always polite and like Natasha they know their stuff, very helpful with valuations also.
To compare, Mulberrys (have made one buy there) were also nice, whereas I have had very mixed experience with Great Western Auctions. Most staff nice but there is an incredibly rude little man who behaves like a compressed version of Basil Fawlty.
G. H.
Can't get enough of this auction house. Great variety of sales, really interesting and exciting finds (love the monthly Contemporary Scottish Art Sale!) Really helpful staff throughout. Only problem is knowing when to stop bidding....😉
L. R.
Great and prompt service with friendly and helpful staff
M. F.
Great place to sell basically anything, only downside, is expensive charges say 50 /50 , Great staff, and so so friendly when valuing items, honestly Shines through.
G. C.
Well appointed, given a voucher for a free tea, friendly auctioneer.
D. M.
Very old Glasgow firm and part of art history - Sir William Burrell began his world famous collection of art and antiquities, as young man spending his pocket money on a painting at auction in the old premises off Exchange Place.
Particularly strong auctions and expertise in Scottish art and collectable Malt whisky. A broad range of other expertise.
One of the most interesting auction houses outside of London. Many heirlooms appear in the catalogues reflecting the time when Glasgow was the second city of the Empire and the maritime capital of the world.
F. M.
